Brokers Comments: This is a well setup sailboat for recreational sailing. Easy to move around the deck and comfortable handling by a single person. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Interested on Gulf pilothouse 29,question I have is regarding the chainplates supporting the lateral shrouds as they are placed inboard thru deck,concern if owners have water leaks? problems,or any other known problems to be aware when looking at a potential buy. thank you David  

Re: Gulf 29 Pilothouse To be specific, you're talking about a Capital Yachts "Gulf 29" (not "Gulfstar" 29), correct? GULF 29 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com I don't have any experience with the Gulf 29 but we own a Gulf 32... the hulls are very different but the interiors and cabin tops are, I believe, quite similar. The G32's do have internal chainplates, and when we were looking at different boats for sale there were ones that showed evidence of leaking. However, at least on the G32, the chainplate is out there to see and both sides of the bolts are visible, so hopefully if they're leaking you will be able to see visual evidence in the ruined varnish / wood. If there is evidence then you're going to want to know if it's an ongoing problem or a former problem that was fixed. Given the age of most of these, most of the ones we saw had some evidence of having leaked in the past. Also look on the cabin sole below the chainplates... some owners have fixed (or not fixed) the leak and then repaired the varnish, but neglect to repair damage to trim or cabin sole below the leak so you might see evidence of a leak there as well. At least on the G32, you can rebed the chainplate cover without having to undo the stays (probably not quite as bombproof as if you actually removed the stays, but...), although there is a forward baby stay that you have to undo before you can rebed it (it's not really to a chainplate as best I can tell just bolted into the hull, but haven't investigated that much yet). The pilothouse windows are known leak potential, especially if they're original (not sure how the originals were bedded, but it didn't last 30 years, that's for sure). Also do careful inspection of v-berth for leaks, specifically under the hatch as it's not a true water tight hatch (so a leak there might not indicate potential deck integrity problems but can still be a source of water infiltration into the v-berth with the following damage). Can't speak to the sailing / motoring characteristics of the G29 as it's a completely different hull (more like a Newport 28, fin keel and spade rudder, lower displacement) from the G32 (full keel, much heavier boat) but we sure like the interior, and not having a lot to compare it to I would say the build is decent (ours is a 1988) for that era factory boat. -- Bass

In general I dont mind the "normal"shortcomings" of older boats,I used to have a Tartan 34 vintage 78 and what you described is something am used to,it seems after your input will be looking at either a 29 or 32,Pilothouse is becoming a necessity if I want to continue sailing. Police say one male juvenile received a gunshot wound to the leg.

GULF SHORES, Ala. ( WALA ) - Gulf Shores police said they are investigating a shooting that happened in the Beach District.

According to police, reports of shots being fired at the 100 block of Gulf Shores near the intersection of Alabama Highway 59 and Beach Highway came in about 8:40 p.m. Police said one male juvenile was injured by a gunshot to the leg during an altercation with people known to him. The victim was treated and later released from the hospital.

One related suspect was apprehended in a parking lot of a fast food restaurant a few miles north on Highway 59, according to police, and “several suspects were developed for the shooter.”

The names of the victim and suspects involved are being withheld due to their juvenile status, police said.

Police were on the scene late into the night questioning witnesses. Since it is spring break, they said there were a lot of people in the area when the shooting happened. They have also been going through cell phone video and even looking at surveillance video to get information.

We’re told at least three shell casings were recovered, but some witnesses reported more shots. A city spokesperson says police are still trying to sort it all out.

Police on Thursday said the shooting victim and the juvenile suspect who is in custody are both from north Baldwin County.

According to investigators, a group of young people became involved in an argument apparently related to a girl, and that argument turned into a fight. The fight began on the north side of Beach Highway and then spilled into the highway and to the south side, where shots were fired.

The firearm used in the incident has not been located, police said.

This shooting incident comes exactly one year to the day since a previous incident during which gunfire interrupted the night in Gulf Shores.

A juvenile was injured in a shooting in Gulf Shores Wednesday night, exactly one year after a shooting during spring break 2023 , a city spokesman said.

Grant Brown, public information officer for the city of Gulf Shores, on Thursday morning said the victim had been treated and released.

On Wednesday night, Brown told Fox 10 that just before 9 p.m. police got a report of a shooting at the corner of Highway 59 and East Beach Boulevard.

“A young male was struck in the leg,” Brown said.

Deputy Police Chief Dan Netemeyer said Thursday morning that police do not have anyone in custody for the shooting at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

A person Brown said was taken into custody at a nearby Walmart parking lot “was associated with the shooter,” Netemeyer said. Brown said Thursday that individual is also a juvenile.

“This appears to be an ongoing dispute between two groups from Bay Minette who were in Gulf Shores for the evening,” Netemeyer said.

“I don’t believe they are life-threatening injuries,” Brown said.

Police “are speaking to a lot of kids that were in the area,” Brown said. “They have a lot of eyewitnesses that have got a lot of information that they are willing to give so they are trying to decipher that right now.”

Police are also reviewing footage from security, traffic and cellphone cameras, Brown said.

The shooting was not far from The Hangout.

“Suspect(s) and victim(s) were not at The Hangout. All Hangout patrons are safe, and we await further details from the GSPD,” The Hangout posted on social media .

It was not clear how many shots were fired but Brown said three shell-casings were recovered from the scene.

“It’s a very isolated event,” Brown said. “We have a significantly strong security force with our police department. We’re a very family friendly destination. We’re blessed. We very seldom, if ever, have situations like this.”

To those who might commit acts of violence in Gulf Shores, Brown said: “Don’t bring that to our town.”

On March 27, 2023, a juvenile was injured in a shooting near a crowded area close to the Gulf Shores Public Beach. The victim survived and several people were charged.
