Howdy! I *may* be the next owner of Diablesse, a 38’ main trysail rigged wooden ketch designed by Frederic Fenger in 1937. I saw an ad in Wooden Boat Magazine for a free boat and responded. If the last guy who looked at her doesn’t want her (which it looks like he doesn’t), she’s mine for the taking! Apparently she’s been on the hard for a few years, and the deck and cabin top are the main trouble areas, besides the fact that she’s dry as a bone and obviously will need to swell back up. I’ll be asking for some help fixing her up as I go along. I believe she’s all original with no electrical, original Lathrop 2-stroke, 8 hp diesel, and a wood stove! One of my friends is a master electrician and another is a blacksmith/welder/diesel mechanic. So I will mostly be asking questions about woodworking! If anybody is in the New England seacoast area and wants to help restore a legendary boat, get in touch! Until/If I get her, I’ll be looking for sailing partners, as well.

Sounds like something that should keep you busy! Have fun too! A copy of Chapelle's Boat Building might come in handy for you. https://books.wwnorton.com/books/detail.aspx?id=22081

Thanks for the recommendation! The book you referenced is the first book recommended by the author of the book I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0070652392/ Looks like that's my next book!

diablesse yacht

I've owned a Wm Hand gaff ketch built in 1909 (sailed her through the SoPac for 5 years), sailed a few even older sailing vessels (professionally) and in this case, the saying, "There's no such thing as a free boat" has never been truer. A boat ain't a house and the best carpentry skills aren't worth a tinker's dam when you start rebuilding an old wooden boat, especially one that's been out of the water for some years and most likely has a great deal of dry rot. She's probably not going to 'swell up' near enough, so you'd best have terrific caulking skills as well. To prepare for a project of this magnitude, you'll want to take a two or three-year course in wooden boatbuilding (again, not carpentry or even cabinetmaking), otherwise, run, run as fast and far from this free boat as you can! Sadly, unless some billionaire comes along and falls in love, she is destined for the fire. Sorry.

@capta : While I am 100% certain that you are knowledgeable in this area, I am also aware that old wooden boats get successfully restored without monumental expense fairly often. I have been watching YouTube channels of several individuals who do so regularly, and I have purchased a top-rated book on the subject from Amazon. Furthermore, the gentleman who is giving her away is a long-time owner of the boat, and is confident that she is able to be restored. I believe he is the third owner of the boat, after Rudy Haase, who got it from Fenger himself (it was designed by and built for Fenger). It is my belief that all three owners have taken very good care of her, and that the current owner simply wants to make sure that she does not turn into firewood. I will be happy to pay a few hundred dollars to discover whether or not she is able to be restored. The one problem I can foresee from reading a 1988 article written by Mr. Haase in Wooden Boat Magazine is that he had her refastened by simply adding new screws without removing the old ones. From what I understand, doing that contributes to weakening of the planks and frames. I will certainly inspect the frames and planks for structural integrity prior to setting her in the drink. As long as they are sound, I have no problem fixing anything else. Elbow grease is free, and I have plenty of it.

Diablesse is something that appears beautiful to an unsuspecting and optimistic person, only to turn into a real demon when you get up close and personal. The name alone is a grim warning. The old wood or other sketchy details are the icing on that cake.

I suspect the yacht you're looking at is the Diablesse II, designed by Frederick Fenger in 1937. The original Diablesse was designed by him in, I think, 1914, and I think it was bigger. See this link for a photo of Diablesse II. https://www.google.com/search?q=Frederic+Fenger+diablesse&rlz=1C1ASUT_enUS730US730&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=Y4SWyPA9joSK9M%253A%252CcHsPE0FB6fTW3M%252C_&usg=AI4_-kQLWfneypQUmcXyopEkpDAlZbVsVg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiE35TC2-ngAhUK_4MKHQ7CA8sQ9QEwAXoECAUQBg#imgrc=9wkfPGzB4_hmDM: This is a link to a photo of the 1914 Diablesse. https://www.google.com/search?q=Frederick+Fenger+diablesse+1914&rlz=1C1ASUT_enUS730US730&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=tMG_C5X_ySxWGM%253A%252CKQuMpqXp8lPzFM%252C_&usg=AI4_-kTfrOnLFVXyOU7AG5HSxbU972McIw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjc3Z343-ngAhWr7YMKHTqGCPwQ9QEwBXoECAAQDA#imgrc=tMG_C5X_ySxWGM:

The 38' main trysail rigged Diablesse was the original Diablesse, and is the one I'm looking at. Fenger originally wrote a book called The Cruise of Diablesse about a 52' fisherman-type schooner which he purchased and renamed. Here's an excerpt from the 1988 Wooden Boat Magazine article which explains it all: "Frederic Abildgaard Fenger, born in Chicago in 1882, did his early sailing on Lake Michigan. Inspired by the writings of Capt. John MacGregor, who had initiated canoe-cruising in England in 1865, the young Frits designed and built an offshore canoe named OUINNETKA in 1900, and cruised extensively in her. Later, he designed YAKABOO, a 17' mahognay-planked, ketch-rigged canoe that weighed 147 lbs. YAKABOO was rudderless, and was steered by trimming sails and moving a sliding centerboard. Frits shipped her to Grenada in 1911 for a cruise north through the Lesser Antilles. He was probably the first person to sail among the West Indian islands for pleasure; the natives were always puzzled by what he was doing. "In 1913, Frits returned to the West Indies for a two-year cruise with his bride aboard a secondhand 52' fisherman-type schooner, DIABLESSE (he named the boat after a West Indian 'evil spirit' to discourage the natives from coming aboard and pilfering). Frits wrote about his Caribbean adventures in two books: Alone in the Caribbean , a description of his voyage in the sailing canoe YAKABOO, and The Cruise of DIABLESSE ('She-Devil she was, but always with a kindly regard for her owners.'). "In the years that followed, he pursued his interests in the unusual, and his designs and comments appeared frequently in the boating press. His experiments with balancing hull and rig resulted in the introduction of the main-trysail rig to the readers of Yachting in 1926, followed in 1927 by his thoughts on the 'dhow-type.' He built a 3' sailing model and perfected the design of the rig, coupled with the dhow hull, during four years of experimentation. In 1933, Yachting presented a 38' main-trysail ketch designed by Fenger, its hull showing the 'so-called 'dhow' trend.' The following year, Yachting published Fenger's design for a 60-footer for a West Coast yachtsman, and the next two years saw the introduction of a 44' main-trysail ketch and a 38' main-trysail motorsailer, each design incorporating new thoughts and refinements." Issue #81, pp. 52, 54, "Diablesse and Her Disputed Rig" by Rudy Haase, Wooden Boat - March/April 1988. Here is the registry info on her posted by the current owner, if you're interested: https://www.woodenboat.com/register-wooden-boats/diablesse

@capta : I'm certainly not discounting your advice, and I'm not overlooking it lightly based on a few YouTube videos and a book. I appreciate any/all input, and yes - I am bound and determined to find a boat so that I can achieve my nearly life-long dream of living aboard a sailboat. My master electrician friend has taken wooden boatbuilding classes and even built a skiff in the past. He will be accompanying me when I go to evaluate the boat before I take possession of it. If he and I determine that it is beyond my skill and access to resources to restore, then I will pass her up. I'm simply trying to defend my position and provide as much information as I can about her, and meant no offense in arguing for optimism!

diablesse yacht

You absolutely should do what gets the juices flowing. However, (isn't there always a 'however' on forums?), however, if you are "bound and determined to find a boat so that I can achieve my nearly life-long dream of living aboard a sailboat", a wooden boat may not be the way to go. It would be much quicker, cheaper, and require less skill to restore a fiberglass boat. If one of your life-long dreams is also to restore a wooden boat, then go for it. Again, I think all us us grumpy forum codgers want you to see you succeed.

@Barquito - Thanks for the reassurance! Show me a free 30-40' fiberglass (or steel, or bamboo, or whatever!) sailboat that's capable of restoration without a complete overhaul, and I will be happy to snatch her up, whip her back into shape, and sail her around the world! I have no problem putting in the hard work required, my friends are willing to provide me with all the tools I need, and I have a stable (if limited) source of income. Diablesse has everything I need, she's the perfect size for me, and the price is right (at least as far as ownership is concerned). Until I find something better, I'm going full steam ahead with her. Well - as long as my friend and I determine that it's possible to restore her.

You may find original plans or drawings here: https://research.mysticseaport.org/coll/coll223/#head56646504

Restoring an old wooden boat requires a long term commitment and an ability to continue doing hard, dirty work while the gratification of ultimate success is long deferred. You have to find enough satisfaction in successfully completing each part of the project to keep you going to the end. This link will take you to an account of the restoration of Witchcraft, a 1903 66' Crowninshield racing yacht that was restored over a period of 20 years, and that can still be seen sailing the Chesapeake Bay. If you can keep yourself motivated long enough to complete the job, it can be done. https://www.theyachtwitchcraft.com/

Diablesse... Witchcraft... is there a theme developing here?

Actually, I misspoke. Witchcraft was a 30 year project. Bear in mind she is waaaay bigger than the 38' Diablesse, and was probably in much worse condition, but make no mistake, restoring any big wooden yacht is a major project. Witchcraft is proof that it can be done, but it requires a strong personal commitment. You can read a brief account of the project in the link in my post #15, above.
