2020 Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS

The new Cruisers Yachts 38 GLS takes all the ingredients you -really, really want—bowrider, outboard, luxury overnighter—and blends them into a delightful concoction. Upon first boarding and walking through the 38 GLS, most first-time boat shoppers will take away several high points, such as the foldout “beach door” that turns a big chunk of the starboard coaming into a water-level replacement for the transom platform you lose with outboards. It’s an elegant solution for allowing the corrosion resistance and other benefits of outboard power, while simultaneously offering the ability to use the stern of the boat as a swimming, -lounging and socializing center.
Even better, the aft seating swivels to face this “beach” so that parents can watch their little water rats paddle around. The rest of the 38 GLS’s capacious cockpit is notable for offering a full bar—complete with stools—and an outdoor kitchen including a grill, sink, refrigerator and an ice maker. Cruisers Yachts makes the most of the bowrider seating with streamlined headrests and a removable table, adding flexibility and function.
The other takeaway is the cabin, which surprises first with 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom, second with a nearly queen-size berth in a private stateroom for naps or overnighting, and last—but -really -important—is an enclosed head with a hot-and-cold freshwater shower. No more rinse-offs on the transom, although there is another shower there. The settee/-dinette below also converts into a double, offering comfy sleeping for four.
Standard power is a trio of 300 hp -Mercury Verado outboards (350 hp -Verados are optional), and we easily hit 53 mph with a bunch of people aboard and a full fuel tank. These Mercs give you joystick maneuvering for docking; they’re surprisingly fuel-efficient too.
Want to play with water toys? The twin 300 hp Mercury outboard engines hit planing speed—22 knots—in just 5.5 seconds, and ran flat-out at top speed in 21 seconds.
Another convenience option is a 5.5 kW generator to power the cabin’s air conditioning or run the blender at the sandbar.

Up front there is a bow-lounge carved out of the foredeck with a U-shaped sofa tracing the inner edge of the bulwark. Seats up here come with comfortable backrests and cup-holders, while integrated Rockford Fosgate speakers enhance the mood. A timber-topped table out here, meanwhile, can be raised or lowered for use as a coffee or dining table, while fix it in place and cover it with cushions to turn this area into a casbah-style sunpad lounge.
A free-flowing, adaptable lounge space to aft flows from swimming platform all the way to the helm across a non-slip teak-effect sole. On the outboard edition of this boat, you will find two dive platforms either side of the engines, while the inboard model features an extra-large, full-beam bathing platform with a hydraulic panel at the rear. The bathing platform connects directly to an aft sofa with adjustable backrests that can be removed to turn this into a rear sunpad, or rotated around to divide this seating area up into separate zones. A starboard side beach door allows for a smooth connection between swim platform and cockpit, radically increasing the amount of space back here and providing extra room for diving into the water. Further forward there is another sofa in neutral toned upholstery, a twin-seat and, nestled under a floating hard-top with a retractable sunroof, a port-side wet-bar station with a fiberglass sink, chilled storage, an outdoor grill and a serving bar with two stools.
This yacht’s helm sits to starboard behind a wrap-around windscreen, and benefits from a Mercury joystick, Simrad multi-function display screens, trim-tab buttons, a Ritchie compass, a tilting steering wheel, VHF radio and throttles built into the gunwale.
Though this looks like a day-boat at first glance there is a surprising amount of space on a capacious lower-deck where you will encounter a U-shaped dining sofa surrounding a high-gloss walnut-lined table up by the bow. The table can be lowered and covered with a mattress to turn this area into a vast double bed for two, while further aft there is another double bed snugly positioned behind the steel and timber steps. Somehow there is also room down here for a mini-galley with a fridge and a microwave, along with a main-head boasting a marbled sink, Corian surfaces and a shower.
The outboard edition of the 38 GLS is powered by triple 300HP Mercury Verado engines as standard for top speeds of approximately 46 knots, while upgrades to 350HP gasoline engines are also on offer. The stern-drive version of this yacht, meanwhile, comes with twin 380HP Mercury diesels for top speeds of 40 knots. Should you choose to cruise stunning coastlines at a more sedate pace of 25 knots then you can expect a range of 233 nautical miles.
