4 design features we love on Brenta 80DC Cool Breeze

Cool breeze's cool hull colour.

One of the most striking design features on the Brenta 80DC sailing yacht Cool Breeze , built by Michael Schmidt and designed by Brenta Design , has to be her cool green hull colour. Inspiration came from Schmidt, who loves the look and colour of vintage Vespas, revealed Brenta Design's Lorenzo Argento.

This colour was perfect for the owner, Argento explained, because the owner loves classic styling – he owns a Bounty and Herreshoff-designed yacht from the 30’s.

Cool Breeze's classic layout

The classic styling of Cool Breeze extends to her layout, too.

“We have defined three different deck levels," Argento says. "One aft, one in the middle with 300mm bulwark and one forward. These different deck levels play a very important role as it looks like the coachroof is sunken into the decks helping to reduce the visual impact. Further the vertical coachroof sides have, like in the old days, portlights which helps greatly ventilation.

“Another idea we brought back from the old days is the central cockpit. It’s not very popular lately, but it allows for a very spacious and very private part of the boat with a proper owner’s suite that overlooks the aft terrace at sea.”

The Sir David Chipperfield-designed interior of Cool Breeze

Legendary global architect Sir David Alan Chipperfield lent his hand to the interior of Brenta 80DC Cool Breeze . This is Chipperfield’s first foray into working with yachts, though he is no stranger to sailing and designed the America’s Cup  building in Valencia, Spain.

“He never worked on an interior boat before, but he is a sailor and he enjoys day sailing with his own B42 – which we designed by the way,” reveals Argento.

“Chipperfield called for a very “safe” interior with a generous radius and a very clever use of materials and colours in true respect of the hull form and structure layout.

“His interiors gently intersect with existing structural elements clearly showing the hull form and adapting the interior to her shape – the table bench in the main saloon is a good example.

“I think this is very innovative and yet very sober.”

Cool Breeze is built to go fast

Don’t let her playful exterior or classic layout fool you –  Cool Breeze  is very much a cutting edge sailing yacht that has been built in carbon fibre to make her lighter and faster whilst being strong, durable and safe.

This Brenta 80DC sailing yacht has already shown some impressive performance over the first few thousand miles, reaching 23 knots easily, Argento told us.

Cool Breeze will be sailing to the Caribbean for the winter and back to the Med next year.

Michael Schmidt Yachtbau Brenta 80 SRD

Sailors that require the space, range and speed of a boat larger than 65’ typically have to sacrifice the freedom and fun of being in control themselves.

80ft SRD - AFT view_light NO coachroof

This is the niche that German yard Michael Schmidt Yachtbau (MSY) is filling with the new Brenta 80 SRD , which is built in a unique way to be as easy to operate as a yacht 25’ shorter.

MSY80srd-01_Saloon_2016.12.30

The owner will have complete control of all sails and be able to handle the boat from the aft deck where the family can relax in a secure cockpit.

MSY80srd-02_Saloon_2016.12.30

All lines are led under deck to this area and every aspect of the yacht’s systems is designed to be easily-understandable to the owner to enhance his ability to sail single-handed. While this first Brenta 80 SRD features a light oak interior, future clients can select from a complete range of wood veneers.

MSY80srd-06_MasterCabin_2016.12.30

Offering a superior balance of sail- ing power and luxury comfort in a contemporary design, this yacht is set to change people’s perception of the 70’ to 100’ range.

Yacht builder Michael Schmidt teams up for sailing yacht Brenta 80 DC

“This boat is an accumulation of my life’s work,” summarises the experienced sailor and successful yacht builder, Michael Schmidt. With four decades in the sailing industry, Schmidt is embarking on a new project. It’s a new build that has him and his expert team, including the exceptional Lorenzo Argento of Brenta Designs as well as world-renowned architect Sir David Chipperfield, very excited.

“I am familiar with nearly all aspects of the yacht building. Now I am building a boat without concession, just beautiful and suiting me. I want it simple, functional and fast. A special blend of old and new,” enthuses Schmidt. In Spring 2015 Schmidt will launch the exclusive Brenta 80 DC, the first in a series of luxury yachts from his new venture Michael Schmidt Yachtbau.

The 80-foot sail yacht fuses simplicity and performance, with leading-edge carbon technology, artisan design and true craftsmanship.

“The Brenta 80 DC is a completely European product, being built in Greifswald, Germany on the Baltic Sea. Brenta Design of Italy provides the exterior design with the styling and interior being created by David Chipperfield Architects of Great Britain,” explains Schmidt “and in RegaYacht, we have found a competent partner for all the composite work.”

“Up until now, most bluewater yachts have been heavy and slow. By using the lighter and more durable carbon fiber technology, we’re able to create a yacht that is not only faster, but incredibly strong, durable and ultimately safer.” explains Andreas Bock, the accomplished racing sailor and Brenta 80 DC Project Manager at Michael Schmidt Yachtbau. “Carbon fiber provides a very low displacement, more accurate control and more stability resulting in a more efficient yacht.” It’s built for those who embrace the cruising lifestyle, sprinting large distances.

“It’s fun to create something and work with specialists familiar with sailing and in love with their profession” Schmidt enthuses about his team.

With intrepid clarity Lorenzo Argento of Brenta Design introduced Italian Alta Moda into yachting – showing the entire trade a new direction. Through their much admired Wallygator they invented Wally. Their B-Yacht daysailers became trendsetters as well. Schmidt followed the work of Brenta Design with interest waiting for the right opportunity to explore new ground with the studio.

Along with Argento, this influential group of top talent includes Sir David Chipperfield, the world-renowned and award-winning architect and maestro of design, who also shares a genuine and deep passion for sailing. “When Chipperfield saw the design from Lorenzo Argento, he liked it immediately. He was excited, grabbed a pen and made initial proposals,” remarks Schmidt. As a Brenta 42 owner, Chipperfield was enthusiastic about this project and gave the look and the interior an original perspective.

Schmidt enjoys linking the digital world with traditional boat building craft. “Modern technology helps in the design and contributes significantly to a truly clever organisation of workflow and logistics”.

“I am interested in efficiency, the collaboration of the best suppliers, and absolute satisfaction of the customer. Therefore each aspect of the product is made by people with passion for quality, by craftsmen living their dedication for building boats,” sums up Schmidt, “we are bringing back the art of boatbuilding.”

The result will be a beautiful build of the highest quality that effortlessly blends simplicity and performance to create a thoughtful, and thoroughly enjoyable, owner-focused yacht.

Get the first glimpse of the design at the Dusseldorf Boat Show in January 2015. Visit Micheal Schmidt Yachtbau in Halle 7a, Stand C07.

New Brenta 80 is Sir David Chipperfield’s first yacht interior and marks Michael Schmidt’s return to boatbuilding

This new 80ft carbon cruiser by Brenta Design marks Hanse founder Michael Schmidt’s return to boatbuilding and Sir David Chipperfield’s first input into yacht design

Brenta 80

New Brenta 80 carbon cruiser for Michael Schmidt

Three big names have contrived to combine some big ideas for this big new build. The Brenta 80, a bold new project by a new brand due to be unveiled at the Dusseldorf Boatshow in mid January, has an innovative multi-tiered deck, designed by Brenta’s Lorenzo Argento. It was created for a veteran of boatbuilding, Michael Schmidt, who sold Hanse Yachts in 2011. He decided he needed a larger yacht than his Hanse 630, aboard which he has extensively cruised for the last three years, but couldn’t find one that met his exacting requirements. He should be behind the wheel of this new carbon fibre 80-footer by early summer.

Schmidt decided to build his own yacht and new yard for luxury semi-custom carbon cruisers in Greifswald, the same town as Hanse. And a certain client and friend of Lorenzo Argento’s was impressed enough to want to come in on the project – this is the first boat that Sir David Chipperfield has worked on. Chipperfield is a keen sailor and owner of a Brenta 42 daysailer and he has designed an understated interior that highlights structural elements and is marked by practical round edges throughout.

Brenta 80 Chipperfield saloon

“I adapted the interior to a comfortable interpretation of the exterior that interacts with the architecture of the yacht,” Chipperfield said.

The novel hull shape was sketched by Argento, an idea that formed the basis for the looks inside and out. High bulwarks aft help disguise a triple-tiered deck, a subsequent benefit of which is a seemingly low profile coachroof. The result is that Schmidt and future 80 clients who chose this configuration gain a vast aft cabin and centre cockpit, without it impacting to heavily on the visual line.

Three versions of the Brenta 80 are offered: a centre-cockpit as per this first model, an aft cockpit or a deck saloon. Also in design is a 100ft version and a day powerboat of around 42ft. Carbon was specified throughout for the 80 because Schmidt wanted to keep weight down. “It’s nice to have a boat that can accelerate fast and do 13–15 knot speeds – cruising is easier, deck fittings are all lighter.” The cruising displacement is expected to very light at around 34 tonnes says Argento.

Ultimate design meets ultimate boatbuilding mix – we await to see if it makes the perfect match.

Things that matter, brenta 80 dc michael schmidt, veronica bottasini, 7 july 2016.

There are three big names behind the Brenta 80 DC , a dream boat that has been attracting a lot of attention in the last few months: Michael Schmidt , founder and former CEO of Hanse, Brenta Design, in the person of Lorenzo Argento, and the British starchitect Sir David Chipperfield. The three have come together to create an 80-foot yacht for Schmidt himself, who wanted a comfortable, elegant, spacious and contemporary cruiser, but with a look that would evoke more traditional lines. The first element of this reappraisal, the wheelhouse with vertical sides, barely visible from the outside: a solution that offers many advantages, including that of having portholes which let in light and improve ventilation below deck. The deck has three different levels, recalling the characteristics of the boats of other times: while in the stern, where the ample terrace is located, the gunwale is almost 60 cm high, in the middle, next to the wheelhouse, it is only 30 and in the bows, beyond the mast, there is a simple stretcher. The choice of a central cockpit to accommodate guests on board has guided Chipperfield’s organization of the internal spaces: roomy, essential and refined, alternating design of the highest quality, such as Franco Albini’s chairs, with solutions of great class and practicality, like the leather handles on the manrope fixed to the ceiling or the straps, also made of leather, used to open the drawers. Real masterstrokes of sailboat design.

Transit of migrants through the Darien Gap resumes as Colombian boat companies end work stoppage

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Migrants bound for the U.S. are once again crossing the Darien Gap in large numbers, officials in Colombia said on Monday, after being stranded for much of last week in a small town along the country’s Caribbean coast due to a work stoppage by local boat captains .

Johann Wachter Espitia, deputy mayor of Necoclí, said that 3,000 migrants have left the town since Friday on boats headed towards the Darien jungle, with another 400 people waiting and sleeping in tents, as they gather money to pay for their tickets.

From Necoclí migrants board boats that take them to two remote villages, where the treacherous trails that cross the Darien Gap begin.

The dense and roadless rainforest divides South America from Central America and in recent years it has become a common, yet perilous route for hundreds of thousands of South Americans, Asians and Africans headed to the United States.

From Monday to Thursday of last week transit across the Darien dwindled as boat companies in Necoclí went on strike over the arrest of two of their boat captains by Colombia’s navy.

The captains had been intercepted after they left Necoclí in two boats carrying around 150 migrants and were accused by authorities of transporting migrants in unsafe conditions, and of contributing to human trafficking.

The two companies operating boat services from Necoclí towards the Darien Gap stopped their services in protest for four days. They resumed activities on Friday after holding several meetings with municipal and national government officials, who were concerned over the large numbers of migrants stranded in the small town. According to Colombia’s Human Rights Ombudsman, around 8,000 migrants were stranded in Necoclí by Thursday, generating the potential for a public health crisis.

According to Wachter Espitia, the companies agreed to a request that migrants boarding their boats register on a government app. More details on the conditions for transporting migrants will be discussed in another meeting later this week, he said.

Colombia has long allowed migrants from different nations to transit through its territory without visas.

But the South American nation has come under increasing pressure from U.S. officials to stem the flow of migrants headed north, as record numbers of people seek asylum at the U.S. border .

Last year 520,000 people crossed the Darien Gap on foot, according to authorities in Panama, where most migrants register with officials in villages on the northern side of the jungle before they continue their journey to the United States.

Panama’s Security Minister Juan Pino said Monday that the number of migrants crossing the Darien could increase this year, with more than 73,000 crossings registered in the first two months of 2024, a 52% increase from the same period last year. Most of those crossings this year have been Venezuelans escaping their nation's economic crisis , followed by migrants from Haiti, China and Ecuador.

Despite its growing popularity, the Darien Gap continues to be a dangerous route where migrants have drowned while crossing swollen rivers and are exposed to robberies, sexual violence and tropical diseases.

On Friday Doctors Without Borders said it had treated 233 victims of sexual violence at its health posts in the Darien Gap during the first two months of this year.

In a report published last year, Human Rights Watch said the Colombian side of the Darien is run by the Gulf Clan, a drug trafficking group that is taking a hefty cut from the fees that migrants must pay to guides and porters that lead them to the border with Panama.

Cool Breeze - Brenta 80 DC by Michael Schmidt Yachtbau

Brenta 80 dc (christened s/y "cool breeze") is the new baby by michael schmidt under his new brand: michael schmidt yachtbau  in greifswald, northern germany..

Cool Breeze is the result of 40 years experience by Michael Schmidt, the founder of luxury sailing yacht builder HanseYachts. Mr. Schmidt, also the winner of the legendary Admiral’s Cup regatta in 1985 summarizes that project:

“This boat is an accumulation of my life’s work”

The exterior lines of the Brenta 80 DC were made by Lorenzo Argento who worked for the well-known Italian yacht design studio Luca Brenta. He was involved in most WALLY and B-Yachts projects over the last 20 years and founded his own design studio in 2016.

Responsible for the interior is the award-winning architect  Sir David Chipperfield . As a sailor and owner of a Brenta 42, he integrated his love to the sea in this project. He designed a very clean interior.

Cool Breeze Yacht Interior Brenta 80 DC

Michael Schmidt explains:

“The Brenta 80 DC is a completely European product, being built in Greifswald, Germany on the Baltic Sea. Brenta Design of Italy provides the exterior design with the styling and interior being created by David Chipperfield Architects of Great Britain and in RegaYacht, we have found a competent partner for all the composite work.”

Andreas Bock, Project Manager at MS Yachtbau commented:

“Up until now, most bluewater yachts have been heavy and slow. By using the lighter and more durable carbon fiber technology, we’re able to create a yacht that is not only faster but incredibly strong, durable and ultimately safer. Carbon fiber provides a very low displacement, more accurate control and more stability resulting in a more efficient yacht. It’s built for those who embrace the cruising lifestyle, sprinting large distances.”

As a sailor and fan of sailing yachts in the 70 to 130 class, I look forward to taking the chance for a visit when the Brenta 80 is finished to see her in all details.
