At the Yacht Club de Monaco the 40th edition of the Primo Cup celebrates four sailing categories

The 40th edition of the Primo Cup-Trophée UBS, the first major international event held under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, comes to an end at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

MONACO, March 11, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The 40th edition of the Primo Cup-Trophée UBS, the first major international event held under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, comes to an end at the Yacht Club de Monaco. This anniversary edition has attracted 90 teams totalling 400 sailors divided across the J/70, Smeralda 888, Longtze Premier and Cape 31 classes. “It was a very special edition for us. After 40 years we’re still here welcoming competitors from all over Europe. Monaco is always the place to test new boats and new technology for the sailing and we’re very proud of it and that this happens under the umbrella of the ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting,” says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri giving also a little insight on what’s happening next at the Club. “I take this opportunity to mention the Yachting Day including the Explorer Awards. It’ll be here during the Ocean Week and we’ll have the pleasure to receive many Explorers. We’ll have 8 boats and around 200 guests, including a delegation of the Explorers Club from New York, around here for this opportunity which is great for the people that have passion for the sea and also innovation.”

Sticking to Primo Cup, in the J/70 class the final victory went to Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio and his monegasque team 'G-Spot', followed by ‘Jerry’ (that also won the amateur Corinthian category) and ‘Moonlight II’. “I am very happy. I always say we got very lucky but behind our luck there’s a lot of work we’ve been doing the whole winter. Primo Cup is one of the most important regattas organised by this Club so I’m very proud of our result. We won in 2021 and now we won again so we’re looking forward to the next one,” says di Lapigio. On the Perpetual Trophy, made by Buccellati, every year it is inscribed the name of the winner of the most represented class, which is J/70, to immortalise the sailing performance. Among the 32 names already engraved (representing eight nations) are Monegasques Claude Rodelato, Ludovico Fassitelli and Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio, who’s having his name written on it again this year.

Moving on to the Smeralda 888 class, YCM’s Achille Onorato ‘Canard à l’Orange’   topped the ranking, followed by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati ‘Django’ and Paolo Rotelli ‘Black Star’. In Longtze Premier, it is the Swiss on  Shensu  who dominated being in complete control of their boat. In second place came ‘Wetfeet’ and in third ‘QI’. For the ‘debutant’ Cape 31 first place went to ‘Give me Five’. Second and third were gained by ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Solano II’.

Organised with technical clothing supplier Slam and UBS, and the support of Monaco’s City Hall, over the years the event has established itself as a major one design meeting attracting big names in sailing. Since the eighties, it has also proved a testbed of innovation with Monaco bay becoming a reference for developing novel technologies and experimenting with new concepts at sea.

Next sailing appointment at the Yacht Club de Monaco is the Women Leading and Sailing Trophy (15-17 march).

Palm Coast Yacht Club Announces Major Additions To 40th Annual Palm Coast Holiday Boat Parade

' src=

Proudly holding its record-breaking status as the largest lighted boat parade in the State of Florida, The Palm Coast Holiday Boat Parade, sponsored by the Palm Coast Yacht Club, has announced important changes to the event which attracts viewers from all over the country.   This year’s Parade route will be expanded by more   than a mile and shuttle bus service will be provided.   Last year the Parade featured a record ninety-one (91) decorated registered boats.   Now in its 40 th year, the Parade will be held. December 9, 2023, at 6:00 p.m.   As always, the Parade is free to all.

The Parade will now begin at Cochise Waterway, the city’s northern-most cut to the Intracoastal Waterway, and head south.   The parade will pass the Cimarron and Club House Waterways and sail under the Hammock Dunes Toll Bridge past St. Joe Walkway and Waterfront Park.   Boats will turn at the Gazebo in   Grand Haven and return to home port.   To improve access to the Parade, parking now will be available at the Palm Coast Community Center on Palm Coast Parkway where Flagler County buses will shuttle viewers to and from European Village where parking continues to be available as well as at Waterfront Park.

The Parade will be held in honor of the late Al Krier, a long-time Parade champion and major community activist.   His 18-foot Herreshoff Pilot will be at the head of the Parade; Krier’s family has generously donated the vessel to the Palm Coast Yacht Club.   Carrying the Grand Marshalls will be “Sunshine,” a 55-foot Viking owned and piloted by Club members Donna Heiss and Ken Mazzie.

Grand Marshals will be Palm Coast Mayor The Honorable David Alfin and Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly.   Parade escorts will include the Marine Unit of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and TowBoatUS.   The Florida Inland Navigation District is also endorsing the event.   Once again, the Parade will be broadcast live by Flagler Broadcasting on KOOL-FM, 100.9. Streamlined boater registration is now open at the website www.palmcoastyachtclub.com .

Says Parade Chair Sarah Ulis, “We are thrilled that once again that so many boaters will decorate their boats as gifts to the Parade and that they and others will continue to be a part of this thrilling component of Florida history.   We are all most grateful.”

Discounted Hotel Rooms

Some of you have inquired about discounted rooms for the weekend of RetroMagic. We recently learned that Disney no longer offers discounted room blocks for groups “as small” as ours.

However, we are pleased to share that we have partnered with Nicole Eule at Cruise Planners and are able to offer a limited number of discounted rooms next door to the Yacht Club at the Walt Disney World Dolphin hotel for a total price of $320 per night , which includes resort fees and hotel taxes.

RetroMagic’s weekend events are a short walk over the bridge between Yacht Club and the Dolphin at a price that’s less than half* the cost of a comparable room at the Yacht Club resort.

Please note these are “run of the house” rates meaning that a bed type is not guaranteed. If you wish to guarantee a room with either one king size bed or two queen sized beds, there is an additional cost of $20 per night. Additionally, self-parking is $32 per night. Valet parking is also available for $42 per night.

We hope that this discounted pricing makes a stay in a deluxe resort next to our event venue an obtainable option for RetroMagic attendees.

*At the time of this post, a Resort View room at the Yacht Club with either a King or two Queen beds is showing a price of $748 per night with tax.

40th yacht club

Disney has informed us the Yacht and Beach Club parking lots will NOT be available to attendees due to construction and preparation for the large Gartner technology conference happening in the weeks after our event. If you are planning to stay on Disney property we strongly recommend you book a room in the Crescent Lake/Boardwalk area or along the Skyliner route (Pop Century, Art of Animation, Riviera Resort or Caribbean Beach) as both options will make it possible for you to walk to the event.

  • Park at Disney's Hollywood Studios and take a Friendship water taxi to the Yacht Club or utilize the Skyway to the EPCOT station.
  • Park at EPCOT and, for those with park admission, walk to International Gateway to the Yacht Club.
  • Take a Minnie Van, rideshare or taxicab from EPCOT’s parking lot or from your nearby resort or lodging directly to the Yacht Club.
  • Park at Disney Springs and take the bus to the Yacht Club.

Accessible parking will be available at Yacht Club utilizing complimentary valet parking for those with valid accessible parking placards or plates.

Boating Traditions: America’s 100 Oldest Yacht Clubs

The development of yacht clubs in the 1800s is an important chapter of our boating and marina history in the U.S.—and tells us much about the country’s early yearning for nature and community.

The birth of organized boating, rowing, and sail-racing clubs in our country took place in the 1800s and many of these early yacht clubs are still in operation today.

If you’re a sailor, oarsman, or boater, you’re probably familiar with many yacht clubs around the country—but do you know which U. S. yacht clubs have the pedigree to lay claim to being the country’s oldest?

The first time I heard the phrase yacht club was during a weekend at our family camp on a lake in the Northern Tier of New York State, just outside Adirondack Park. As a boy, most of my weekends there were spent fishing, swimming, and boating, and at the neighboring marina I heard sailing stories about the St. Regis Lake Yacht Club, founded in 1897. (Not on the list here, it’s the 156th oldest yacht club in America.) I was and still am a powerboater—learning boating back then in an aluminum boat with a 7 1/2-hp outboard—but I was fascinated by the sailing stories I heard dating back to the turn of the 20th Century in New York’s Franklin County.

At Dockwa, our loose definition of a yacht club is:

  • Usually membership-owned and controlled by a board;
  • Can be exclusive, but many no longer are;
  • Can specialize in many different types of activities such as sailing, racing, cruising, and kids’ programs;
  • They do not always have paid employees and might be volunteer-based.

Many yacht clubs nationally use Dockwa as their dockage reservation-and-booking platform or for marina management. So recently we had some fun office chatter—because we all work remotely, it was actually digital direct messaging office chatter—about which of the country’s yacht clubs have been around the longest.

Without further ado, and giving a shout-out to International Burgee Registry , here is the list of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in the United States, in chronological order of their founding from one to 100, with links to those still operating.

Yacht clubs are often run by a board of directors, who are responsible for the club’s governance and leadership. The board of directors is typically elected by the club’s membership and is responsible for setting the club’s policies and overseeing its operations.

Effective yacht club governance requires a clear understanding of the club’s objectives and priorities, as well as a commitment to transparency and accountability. The board of directors should establish clear policies and procedures for decision-making, financial management, and member communication.

One important aspect of yacht club governance is ensuring that the club’s leadership reflects the diversity of its membership. This includes not only demographic diversity but also diversity of experience, skills, and perspectives. A diverse leadership team can bring new ideas and approaches to the table, promote inclusivity and equity, and help the club better serve its members and community.

To ensure effective governance, many yacht clubs use benchmarking and best practices to evaluate their operations and identify areas for improvement. This might involve comparing the club’s performance to that of other clubs, conducting member surveys, or seeking input from industry experts.

In addition to strong governance, effective leadership is essential for a successful yacht club. The club’s leaders should be passionate about yachting and committed to promoting the club’s mission and values. They should also be skilled communicators, able to build relationships with members, sponsors, and community partners.

Yacht club leaders should also be proactive in identifying and addressing challenges and opportunities. This might involve developing new programs or events, seeking out new sponsorship or partnership opportunities, or addressing member concerns and feedback. By staying engaged and responsive to the needs of their members and community, yacht club leaders can help ensure the long-term success of their club.

Yacht Clubs in Popular Culture

Yacht clubs have long been a symbol of wealth, luxury, and exclusivity, and as such, they have been featured in numerous movies, TV shows, and books. Here are some notable examples of yacht clubs in popular culture:

  • The Great Gatsby : F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel features the fictional West Egg Yacht Club, which is where Jay Gatsby’s extravagant parties take place. The club is described as “one of the most fashionable and exclusive of its kind,” and it serves as a backdrop for the story’s themes of wealth, class, and social status.
  • Caddyshack : This 1980 comedy film features the fictional Bushwood Country Club, which is home to a group of wealthy and eccentric golfers. The club’s yacht basin is a prominent location in the movie, and it serves as the site of a memorable scene involving a giant animatronic gopher.
  • The O.C. : This popular TV show from the early 2000s features the Newport Beach Yacht Club, which is where many of the characters socialize and attend events. The club is portrayed as a glamorous and exclusive destination, and it serves as a symbol of the show’s affluent California setting.
  • Succession : This HBO drama series follows the lives of the wealthy and dysfunctional Roy family, who are the owners of a media conglomerate. In season two, the family attends a high-society event at the fictional Tern Haven Yacht Club, which is described as “the most exclusive club in the Northeast.” The club’s members are shown to be ruthless and competitive, much like the show’s main characters.

While these depictions of yacht clubs in popular culture may not be entirely accurate or representative of all yacht clubs, they do reflect the cultural significance and fascination with these exclusive institutions.

Judge shows mercy to ex-Romulus mayor who spent campaign money on yacht club, wedding

40th yacht club

Former Romulus Mayor LeRoy Burcroff used campaign funds to help pay for his daughter's yacht club wedding, his yacht club dues and a Florida vacation with friends — but he isn't going to prison for any of it, despite his guilty plea.

Instead, a federal judge on Thursday gave the convicted ex-politician three years' probation and four months' home confinement, sparing him a prison sentence that the government sought. Federal prosecutors had requested that Burcroff be locked up for 14 months for betraying the public's trust by using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal spending.

"The residents of Romulus, Michigan, put their trust in defendant LeRoy Burcroff. Those who supported the defendant with their wallet and their vote likely never expected this aspiring politician to spend their hard-earned money on a family wedding, a Florida vacation with friends or a yacht club membership," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton P. Brown wrote in a sentencing memo that urged the judge to lock Burcroff up.

"Sadly, over a period of over four years, the defendant made a mockery of the city’s slogan — the 'Home of Opportunity' — by stealing thousands of dollars in campaign donations to enhance his lifestyle."

Brown added: "The defendant’s deceit and dishonesty must be punished."

'I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions'

Burcroff, though, convinced U.S. District Judge Denise Paige Hood to show him mercy. In a letter to the judge, the 59-year-old father and grandfather described himself as a prayerful man and avid community volunteer who was lucky enough to marry his high school sweetheart, raise children with her and pass down his family's theme to his kids: "Always do the right thing."

As for his crime — he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2022, admitting he used $4,500 in campaign funds to help cover his daughter's yacht-club wedding — he wrote:

"I agonize everyday over what I did. I wish I could do things over, but I know I can't."

He went on to say:

"I never thought I would be in this position standing before a judge, admitting to breaking the law, and asking for your leniency. ... I made some terrible mistakes, made some terrible decisions. ... I am so sorry."

While Burcroff pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud, he did not admit during his plea hearing to using more than $15,000 in campaign money for personal reasons, which is what he was charged with.

According to the government, in addition to using campaign money to help pay for a wedding bar tab and church ceremony fees, Burcroff also did the following:

  • In 2017, he used campaign money to overpay his membership dues at the Belleville Yacht Club. When the club realized the mistake, management wrote a $2,000 check to reimburse him for what they believed was an oversight. "This was no misstep, however," prosecutors wrote in court documents. "Upon receiving the reimbursement, (he) promptly deposited the sum into his personal bank account."
  • In 2014, Burcroff bought a $23,000 Ford Focus with campaign funds that he used “extensively for personal purposes,” then later bought a $27,000 Jeep Wrangler that he used for “similar impermissible personal excursions.”
  • In March 2018, he bought his way onto the board of a local trade organization, Power Transmission Distributors Association, by making a $1,000 donation to the group from his campaign account.
  • In January 2019, he flew his wife and two friends to Florida for a weekend vacation — courtesy of his campaign donors. The couples stayed in a luxury hotel and dined in fine restaurants to the tune of more than $4,000 — all of which was billed to the campaign. The friends who accompanied him on the trip reimbursed him for their portion of the vacation. Burcroff then deposited the friends' money into his personal account, thus doubling his money.

In 2020, after WXYZ broke details about Burcroff's campaign scheme, Burcroff reimbursed his campaign $35,000.

Following Burcroff's sentencing hearing, U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison stated that Burcroff’s conviction and sentence"underscores our commitment to ensuring that" communities in southeast Michigan "are represented by public officials who have integrity and are seeking office not for their self-interest, but for the good of the people they are elected to represent.”

Added Detroit's FBI chief Cheyvoryea Gibson: "The former mayor's actions severely undermined the confidence of those who bestowed trust and faith in him and his office. ... We will not tolerate misconduct and will do everything we can to ensure justice is served."

New York Yacht Club 40

New York Yacht Club 40 is a 58 ′ 11 ″ / 18 m monohull sailboat designed by Nathaniel G. Herreshoff and built by Herreshoff Mfg. Co. between 1916 and 1926.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Demolition of Cape Coral Yacht Club to begin

The Cape Coral City Council decided on a new look for the yacht club, including a new community center, an outdoor pool, a playground, a restaurant and a parking garage.

The Dirt: Michael Jordan buys new estate in Jupiter, and Kyma restaurant to open in West Palm Beach

40th yacht club

Welcome to  The Dirt ! I’m real estate reporter  Kimberly Miller  with the latest developments in the sizzling market.

In this week's real estate news, some wealthy folks are terribly vexed because they can't park their 164-foot yacht at their dock in North Palm Beach, and some normal folk are troubled that proposed affordable housing in Jupiter really isn't that affordable.

Ahhhh, Palm Beach County. From Ruinart champagne to the champagne of beers , we've got it all.

There's also breaking restaurant news and The Palm Beach Post covers restaurants better than Velveeta cheese on nachos. Or hollandaise on eggs benny, or flambéed orange sauce on crepes Suzette or, well, you get the picture. We write a lot about restaurants.

Senior business reporter Alexandra Clough was the first to report on a famous Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach, and there's also a story about why Planet Smoothie and Moe's Southwest Grill co-founder Martin Sprock may be abandoning plans for an eatery on West Palm Beach's acclaimed Antique Row.

A 164-foot yacht named Honey gets the cold shoulder in North Palm Beach

The very best part of this story is the revelation that we — little ol' Palm Beach County — have become a "mini-Monaco" for the wealthy mariners of the world who can handle a little chop in their 164-foot mega yachts. (I can't resist a "Wolf of Wall Street" clip) But once they get the yachts here here, they face a serious parking dilemma .

A North Palm Beach homeowner just wants to dock his yacht named Honey at his home. Trouble is, he has to "occupy" the home and since he's got several other homes in Palm Beach County and this one isn't his primary residence the definition of "occupy" seems to be the stumbling point.

It's a real Palm Beach dilemma. Too many homes and a mega yacht. Sigh.

Penthouse at The Bristol in West Palm Beach sells for $28 million

The ultra-luxury tower that some folks originally poo-pooed because it was in West Palm Beach instead of Palm Beach just had another record sale for a single-condominium at a recorded $27.99 million. The six-bedroom penthouse is one half of the 23rd floor of the swanky condo that sparkles like a beacon of affluence on the shores of the beleaguered Lake Worth Lagoon .

The seller was a company affiliated with a trust in the name of the late Boston developer Gerald S. Fineberg. The buyer's side is a mystery hidden in a trust that's sealed inside the lost treasure of Oak Island .

Michael Jordan buys another multi-million dollar home in the ultra-exclusive Bear's Club

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Michael Jordan can buy a home just about any-dang-where he pleases. For the first time last year, Jordan made the Forbes list of the country's 400 richest people , so to choose another property in the Bear's Club in Jupiter must say something about its exclusivity and high-end amenities.

His new 9,100-square-foot home has nothing on his custom-built estate nearby, but it did cost a recorded $16.5 million, which ain't too shabby.

New York's acclaimed Kyma Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach

If a renowned New York restaurant is going to open its first eatery outside of New York, where else is it going to go than Wall Street South? So, of course, Kyma, which offers traditional Greek taverna food, will be coming to downtown West Palm Beach by next year with ground-floor space AND a lively rooftop area.

I do so love a piece of baklava, but at $14-a-pop, it's a little above my budget. There's a nice happy-hour menu with lots of $10 "bites", which seems more doable for the non Wall Street Southerners .

Pharrell Sets Sail on His Yacht Rock Era With Surprise New Album

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Pharrell appears to be celebrating his 51st birthday today, April 5, with a gift to fans — a new album that’s totally free to stream and download through one specific website .

To say there aren’t many confirmable details about the 10-track project is an understatement. Based purely on the album artwork, the project appears to be called Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1: City of Limitless Access and might be credited to a group called Virginia — though, for all we know, Virginia is part of the title.

And while it’s definitely Pharrell singing on the album, his name isn’t attached anywhere to the project, not even the metadata of the Mp3s if you download the LP (it’s similarly unclear if he played all the instruments himself or brought in some collaborators). The musician hasn’t promoted the album on his website or social media.

Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1 (if that is the official title) marks Pharrell’s first solo album (if we can actually consider this a solo album) since 2014’s Girl . He’s released two other collaborative singles this year, “Good People” with Mumford and Sons and “Doctor (Work It Out)” with Miley Cyrus.

Pharrell also has a couple of movie projects in the works. The first, announced earlier this year, will be a biopic of sorts but told entirely through Lego brick animation (it’s fittingly called Piece By Piece ). The other is an as-yet-untitled collaboration with filmmaker Michel Gondry , which will be set in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1977 (where Pharrell grew up) and feature a cast of Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Cape Coral Yacht Club’s 60th anniversary marked with gala — and a look back

By cj haddad - | jun 14, 2022.

40th yacht club

As you walked through the Cape Coral Yacht Club doors Friday night, you were transported back in time.

Classic music of a bygone decade blared while the dance floor was packed with tie-dye, tassels, and groovy moves.

It was a special occasion. The Yacht Club was celebrating its 60th anniversary on the exact weekend it opened in 1962. And the city’s oldest and most historic venue got a proper bash.

Tales of yesteryear were told and the night was capped off with a special presentation of Waltzing Waters: a spectacular synchronized water and light show that was a major Cape attraction in the early years of the city. The event was put on by the Cape Coral Museum of History and sponsored by The Gunterberg Charitable Foundation.

“I got so much pleasure meeting people who came to celebrate our 60th anniversary,” said Cape Coral Councilmember Gloria Tate, who also serves as president of the museum’s board. “People who just moved here within the last few years were especially interested in our history. The medallions (each attendee received) were so special as they captured the essence of the building. Celebrating with so many wonderful residents was a memory I will cherish as I leave my political career.”

Fellow city Councilmember Tom Hayden opened the evening talking about the origins of the Yacht Club and the variety of uses the venue provided over the years. He spoke with long-time Cape residents and they told their version of what they remember. It was a time to reflect on six decades.

“It was fantastic to see the community come together to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Cape Coral Yacht Club,” said museum Executive Director Janel Trull. “The stories shared by some of our earliest residents were touching and really drove home the point that Cape Coral was built not just as a residential development but as a true community.”

Museum board member and long-time Cape resident, Linda Biondi, who played a major role in organizing the event, said: “Over the last 30 years, we’ve had many celebrations in the Yacht Club Ballroom. So, there are lots of fond memories. As for why it’s a special place; the Yacht Club itself as well as the ballroom is part of the history of Cape Coral. Our city has a habit of not preserving its history and for me, this is one of the last jewels.”

After some stories were swapped, it was time to hit the dance floor. Tunes that topped the charts six decades ago still rang true as attendees boogied the night away. Good eats were provided by Mission BBQ and the museum was showcasing its custom T-shirts for the anniversary.

“The food was delicious, the music was fun to dance to, and there was so much history discussed,” Trull said. “Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. One person even told me that they got much more out of the event than they thought they would. I hope everyone left with a better understanding of the importance of the Yacht Club to the community and a renewed passion for the history of Cape Coral in general.”

At 9 p.m. at the Yacht Club pool, a special treat awaited. Keeping with the theme of the ’60s, Waltzing Waters showed its stuff to classic hits and artists, dancing and dazzling along the way.

Tate has always been a strong supporter of Waltzing Waters and its history in the city dating back to founders Leonard and Jack Rosen.

“My passion is the Waltzing Waters (Liquid Fireworks) ‘I have a dream: The Waterfront Wonderland Park’ located at the old Golf Course, with the Waltzing Waters in the middle, lots of green space, a small cottage style hotel and a Rose Garden,” she said.

The Cape Coral Yacht & Racquet Club is one of the oldest original amenities still standing in the Cape. It has been used as a community gathering spot for the past 60 years and is a location near and dear to so many of Cape Coral’s residents. Trull said the museum had already planned to do a 60th anniversary exhibition on both the Yacht Club and the Teen Club in the fall of 2022. As she researched, Trull noted the Yacht Club facility opened the weekend of June 9 – 10, 1962 with a full weekend of activities, culminating with a barbecue dinner and dance. Much like they had on Friday.

So, what’s next for the venue? Its future is still up in the air.

“I don’t know what will become of the Yacht Club,” Tate said. “I have high hope the next council will continue to have the vision of a great park featuring a beach for all, and boat ramps for anyone who wants to enjoy our waters. I would hope that the integrity of the building remains as a place where people can gather for many occasions. I also hope the fountain will always be there as a source of inspiration, a source of peaceful waters, and in many ways a miniature form of what our Waltzing Waters were.”

Biondi added, “It’s great that we’re going to expand the beach. The seawalls need to be redone in the yacht basin. The sad thing is that it seems that Yacht Club Ballroom will be taken down rather that renovated. I find that once again we cannot save history.

“It’s also upsetting that we are going to put a parking garage. I would hope that we would be able to add more parking spaces by reworking the spaces. Perhaps move the tennis courts to another location and that space would add a lot of parking spaces? For me, it’s the ambiance of the area.”

Whatever may come, the museum will always strive to preserve the building’s history.

“The Museum tells the story of the Yacht Club as part of its guided tour and showcases several artifacts from the early days in a permanent exhibit,” Trull said. “This fall, the museum will be curating a more in-depth temporary exhibition on the Yacht Club and Teen Center (now the Rotino Center) which will showcase additional items, photographs and more.”
