BALTIC 117 PERSEVERANCE MODERN CLASSIC WITH A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO SYSTEMS DESIGN

This yacht is an advanced composite 117ft (35.8m) Custom Classic sloop from the board of renowned Dutch designers Dykstra Naval Architects.

She has distinctive pilot cutter-style features, including a straight stem, bowsprit, counter stern and deep bulwarks, but a very modern approach to emissions and the environment.

There will be a notable emphasis on efficiency with features such as ‘smart’ cabins, designed to automatically minimise power consumption when unoccupied, and air conditioning energy waste re-cycled to heat water.

With an electric propulsion system powered by a lithium ion battery bank this global cruising yacht will be able to operate in ‘silent’ mode for long periods.

The yacht is designed with an owner’s suite forward and three double guest cabins, with crew accommodation for six arranged aft.

Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, the Baltic 117 Custom, with her tall bermudan rig, displacement of just over 100 tons and deep bulwarks, looks as though she’ll be a fast and comfortable sailing yacht, ideal for her owner’s global cruising ambitions.

Dykstra Naval Architects describe the yacht as ‘a pilot cutter with timeless elegance’. deVosdeVries design is styling the ‘light and contemporary’ interior using stained oak, dark bog oak trims and ‘industrial chic hardware’.

A BEAUTIFUL BALTIC IS BORN

The video shows how the two halves of the one-off timber mould are carefully moved aside before the hull is lifted clear using our overhead cranes. The two mould structures are manoeuvred from the build space before the 16-ton hull, suspended overhead, is carefully lowered onto a purpose-built cradle, in which it will sit until the yacht is ready to launch.

First look: Dykstra/Baltic 117 Perseverance

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 4, 2022

The Dykstra/Baltic 117 Perseverance made its debut at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show and has already won Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards

117 foot sailing yacht

It would seem that I’m not alone in finding Dykstra’s modern classic designs stunning, especially its pilot cutter-inspired models. The 117ft Perseverance scooped Sailing Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards earlier this summer, together with eco and best naval architecture awards.

The pilot cutter style, with its trademark features such as plumb stem and bowsprit, squared deckhouses and counter stern, is one which has stood the test of time for its practicality as well as aesthetic appeal. For example, the long bowsprit helps enable multiple headsail options, while the deep cockpits and high bulwarks provide a secure feeling on deck.

Perseverance can set and furl its formidable sail wardrobe via push buttons for easy short-handed cruising, particularly useful for a cruising yacht which is chartered out.

Behind the oiled teak veneers of its traditional deckhouses and swept decks lies a high-tech composite build by world leaders in their craft Baltic Yachts. A diesel-electric propulsion system charges the battery bank to allow for up to nine hours of silent ship at anchor. While sailing, a free spinning propeller combines with the electric motor for power generation.

Efficient energy systems are used throughout, including the reuse of waste air conditioning and it is estimated that the power savings aboard amount to over 70lt of fuel per day when in guest/owner mode.

“Yachts cannot be 100% environmentally ‘green’, but in a sailing yacht you can do a lot of small things that can add up to a great deal when it comes to power saving and emissions control,” believes Baltic’s executive vice-president Henry Hawkins. balticyachts.fi

Doyle Sails

Baltic 117 ‘Perseverance’ | A modern classic with a sustainable touch.

Recently launched and already capturing the hearts of many, Perseverance is a custom classic sloop designed by Dutch firm Dykstra Naval Architects and built by Baltic Yachts. With timeless pilot cutter-style features, Perseverance boasts a very modern approach to emissions and the environment. The yacht features all of the latest Doyle Sails technology to reduce loads and increase performance, handling efficiencies and weight.

117 foot sailing yacht

Doyle Sails pioneered the Structured Luff and Cableless technology and continues to lead the fleet in innovation and design. Now shaping the way yachts are designed and built forever. With Structured Luff technology, it allows yachts to extend their sailing range, ultimately requiring fewer sails and Perseverance has taken advantage of just that.

The yacht boasts an inventory that includes a Structured Luff Staysail, J0 and a Cableless A3 alongside their new Doyle Stratis Mainsail, Blade and delivery inventory. With many years of innovation and development in the bank, Doyle Sails continues to design and deliver sails with better performance, speed and handling efficiencies. Significantly less luff sag and reduced loads, create more driving force from greater projection.

All of Perseverance sails are built from Doyle Sails’ premier range of Stratis 1100 – this range provides unmatched performance due to the Carbon and Technora fibres which are used in conjunction with patented resins selected for their long term durability and resistance to stretch.

Every Stratis sail is 100% custom designed to the yacht with the world-renowned Doyle design team working with the integral partners of the Baltic 117 project from the outset to deliver the ultimate sail package that suits the requirements of both the yacht, crew and owner itinerary. Stratis 1100 are Doyle Sails’ lightest, fastest, and strongest sails which are seen on the majority of Superyachts that Doyle powers globally.

117 foot sailing yacht

Leading the sail production team is Scott Zebny from Doyle Sails Palma , who has specialised in Superyacht sails for a number of years. Doyle Sails Palma is a world class facility and currently one of the largest sail lofts in the area with over 3,000 sqm of floor space – recent projects include J Class’ ‘Endeavour’ and ‘Lionheart’; recently launched Baltic Cafe Racer 68 ‘ Pink Gin Verde ‘; Supermaxi ‘Leopard 3’; amongst a plethora of both cruising and racing Superyachts.

The Doyle Sails facility is owned and operated by some of the most well known sailors in the industry. In 2018, Doyle Sails International CEO Mike Sanderson, Design Director Richard Bouzaid and Managing Director David Duff went into partnership with Chris Sherlock, Scott Zebny and Luke Molloy.

Molloy, Sherlock and Zebny play a key role in the continued development of the Superyacht shipyard and supplier relationships, ensuring seamless collaboration in a demanding marketplace.

Doyle Sails Palma has established their presence in Palma and are able to offer unique services to their clients, including the manufacture of Doyle sails on site, in Mallorca.

Named after a famous Vanderbilt sailing yacht and winner of the 1934 America’s Cup, the 117-foot full-displacement motor yacht RAINBOW is a timeless classic. Her original owners were avid sailing and motor yacht enthusiasts with a very specific point of view. After a chance encounter with another Delta yacht, ALLIANCE, they quickly became enamored of her elegant lines and engaging appearance. Experienced in yachting, they knew well Delta’s expertise in creating composite hulls. These details, plus Delta’s reputation in the industry for beautiful and capable vessels, inspired them to create their very own.

The Delta Design Group undertook the naval architecture as well as the interior design. RAINBOW ’s   interior spaces are reminiscent of a classic sailing yacht, with handsome teak paneling as far as the eye can see, and elegant finishes. Additionally, they made sure the owners’ personalities and interests came through wherever you look. They’re passionate collectors of nautical art and sailing artifacts—their cherished mementos placed prominently throughout her rooms create a good deal of visual impact. In particular, Delta worked closely with her owners to ensure that the design scheme would spotlight their large collection of America’s Cup memorabilia. Personal touches are found both inside and out that celebrate the era of Howard K. Vanderbilt’s RAINBOW, including a fine glass-encased model on display in the main dining room.

Adjacent to the starboard-side main salon is a handsome study brimming with a library of nautical books, with a convertible settee that can be unfolded to create a double bed to accommodate extra guests. While expert at entertaining, RAINBOW is very much a comfortable family home on the water. Her stately rooms feature gorgeous antique mahogany furniture accompanied by sumptuous fabrics. Highly personal and performance-focused, RAINBOW is the perfect example of successful collaboration, the true embodiment of her owners’ desires made real through expert naval design.
