(NEWS) The Monaco Legend Group will auction a one-of-a-kind Rolex Yacht-Master

The rolex yacht-master dix millionieme chronometre.

The Yacht-Master auctioned on April 22 and 23 in Monaco is one of the most attractive one-of-a-kind contemporary Rolex watches and popped up in the early nineties to celebrate the ten-millionth Rolex watch equipped featuring the Chronometer Certificate.

Interestingly, it is not a Daytona, a Submariner or a Day-Date but a Rolex Yacht-Master, thus adding additional flavour to our guide as no other model could ever do. May we call it the Rolex Yacht-Master Heiniger ? Yes, we might, but we need to move forward and provide further details.

The Heiniger family and Rolex

The model pictured here was manufactured under the Heiniger family’s leadership at Rolex; they managed the brand since Andre Heiniger was appointed President of Rolex in 1964 through his son Patrick’s appointment in 1992.

This one-off platinum Yacht-Master is a prototype conceived to celebrate such a milestone and holds all the features found on first-class super-exclusive Rolex timepieces, and adopts baguette-cut sapphires and diamonds replacing the stock indexes plus the “DIX MILLIONIEME CHRONOMETRE” print on the dial, and the calibre 3135’s oscillating mass.

The Heiniger family had, no doubt, a soft spot for platinum watches ; three unique platinum Daytona also appeared under their management and, according to industry’s rumours, the Daytona 116598 SACO, better known as the Leopard, was among their projects inspired, it seems, by Nina Stevens, Patrick Heiniger’s girlfriend back then.

However, the Rolex Yacht-Master Heiniger is not a unicorn adorning a watch museum ; it will soon go under the hammer thanks to the Monaco Legends Group, the auction house co-managed by vintage watchmaking guru Davide Parmegiani, the 22 and 23 April.

Given the relevance of the timepiece and its exclusivity, we expect fierce competition among collectors to make this piece theirs. What is the auction’s base price? The current estimation is between one and two million euros , quite a hefty price gap but something hard to predict for any watch expert.

The origins of the Rolex Yachtmaster

When did the Rolex Yachtmaster first appear? It’s hard to define. The name “Yacht Master” was filed for patent by Rolex in 1950 and, according to rumours and several non-confirmed historical sources, marked the brand’s willingness to introduce a new collection atop the top-selling and sporty Submariner; yet, it’s hard to describe the time lapse between patent and the first official commercial release. When we look at the current collection, we can also find inspiration in the most challenging endeavours across the oceans, up to professional yacht racing.

For instance, the former includes the expeditions set out by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston . He completed the first-ever solo circumnavigation of the globe, the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race of 1969, but we can’t forget what Sir Francis Chichester achieved, too; he circumnavigated the world from West to East in nine months and one day between 1966 and 1977 aboard the never-forgotten Gipsy Moth IV.

During his expedition, Chichester wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer, laying the foundations for what a Rolex watch represents when tested under extreme weather conditions on land, sea and air.

The first Yachtmaster

The first Rolex Yachtmaster dates back to 1992 ; it was marketed as reference 16628 and is the second most recent new Rolex watch after the more contemporary Rolex Sky-Dweller.

The collection’s timeline has undergone a bizarre evolution compared to similar Rolex watch collections.

Showcasing an 18-carat yellow gold case and bracelet paired with an unusual white dial , it housed the movement 3135 and is undeniably an evolution of the design codes seen on a Submariner, despite the journey to the first edition being unexpected and with plenty of testing prototypes.

Was the Yachtmaster pictured above the first attempt ever? It was from a commercial standpoint, not from a product perspective instead. The Yachtmaster moniker first surfaced between 1967 and 1969 when Rolex released a couple of prototypes based on the Daytona , whose case diameter had grown to 39.5 mm. The timepieces mentioned above belong to Italian collector John Goldberger and artist Eric Clapton.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 and 37 mm

Here is the Yacht Master’s “bread and butter”, undergoing several evolutions to end up with the model pictured here, as an example, in its gold and steel livery. With Jean-Frèdèric Dufour appointed CEO, Rolex has revisited the entire offering, which includes 40 and 37-mm large models, but has never hit the spot as the most wanted Professional Rolex among enthusiasts. The Daytona , Submariner, or GMT Master 2 are far more sought-after than any Yachtmaster, although the appreciation has steadily grown year after year .

Instead, the Yachtmaster’s technical development began with the 2007 Rolex Yacht-Master 2 116680 , whose sailing-professionals-oriented complication proves, alongside a Rolex Sky-Dweller, how much Rolex technicians are up to the task when asked to design a mechanically complicated watch.

Rolesor and Rolesium.

The current Yachtmaster collection with bracelets includes a completely revised range, comprising seven models : four 40 mm and three 37 mm models. They are available exclusively in steel and gold or platinum; some come in Rolesium (steel and platinum), others in Rolesor (steel and gold) such as, for instance, the Rolex Yachtmaster 40mm model in steel and Everose gold pictured here, also available with a black dial and as a 37mm size.

Let’s look closer at the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 in Steel and Everose Gold : it combines 904L steel and Everose pink gold, the Rolex-patented pink gold alloy adopting a specific silver and copper percentage to create an alloy capable of offering above-the-average shine, and wear resistance over time.

The Yachtmaster’s bezel

What makes the Yacht-Master unique is the bezel’s design in finish and functionality; it houses mirror-polished raised indexes and numerals on a sandblasted base and comes as a one-piece of gold or platinum. The polished to brushed finish appears on the Oyster bracelet and case sides, lugs included.

The Yachtmaster is widely considered a more luxurious take on the Submariner and a transition model between a sporty and classic Rolex watch with a gold case, as proved by the slightly curved lugs and the case side, making the Yachtmaster closer to four and five-digit Submariners as less professional than other timepieces belonging to the same product category, as exemplified by the specs sheet. The bezel is graduated but is bidirectional and water-resistant up to 100 metres .

Comparing current and first-ever Yachtmaster like the Rolex 69623 or 169622, for instance, lies in the options available: you’ll find the blue dial exclusively available on Rolesium models, while the Rolesor offers a chocolate brown or black dial , lovingly contrasting the case and bracelet’s tones, in our opinion.

The calibre 3235

Since 2019, the Rolex Yachtmaster has housed the latest-gen Rolex calibre 3235. Therefore, all models can run for at least 70 hours when fully wound.

The watch is certified as a Superlative Chronometer according to Rolex standards.

The calibre 2236

Instead, the 37 mm model adopts the smaller movement 2236, whose technical specifications differ slightly .

The main difference is that the Siloxy hairspring with a flat terminal curve , introduced by Rolex in 2014, replaced the Parachrom Blue one.

The Rolex Yachtmaster Oysterflex

At Baselworld 2015, Rolex released the first Yachtmaster with an Oysterflex bracelet , the brand’s patented rubber strap equipped with an inner nickel and titanium alloy, exclusively offered with a 40mm or 37mm gold case. Looking back at the first-ever YM, the Yachtmaster Oysterflex is perhaps the perfect successor to the 1992 Yacht Master.

The first release appeared in Everose rose gold. Such a new generation best embodies the collection’s spirit ; it belongs to the Professional line of watches but is more luxurious, and gold highlights the Yacht Master’s “carrure”.

The new Yachtmaster Oysterflex also introduced the first-ever matte ceramic bezel ; it mimics a Rolesor or Rolesium’s, but the inlay is a single piece of matt black ceramic.

As with the two-tone models, the 40 and 37-mm case options adopt the 3235 and 2236 , respectively. The new model had a stunning success, and Rolex soon expanded the product range by offering a more generous 42 mm case size (however, the 40 mm model is unparalleled, in our opinion).

The 42mm collection is available in yellow or white gold , while the 40mm and 37mm models only come with an Everose rose gold case. We think Rolex will soon extend the Oysterflex collection by adopting new case materials.

In 2020, Ineos Britannia’s skipper Ben Ainslie was spotted wearing a titanium Yachtmaster 42 during a training session. After the Rolex Deepsea Challenge Titanium RLX ‘s unveil, this proto will likely make it to reality anytime soon.

The Rolex Yachtmaster 2

Rolex is a manufacturer whose capabilities include rather mechanically-complicated watches ; it is something most people are unaware of. In the same price range as a Daytona, for example, you can opt for at least two complicated models: one is the regatta-ready Yachtmaster 2.

If an ordinary Yachtmaster is not as “professional” as its siblings, the Yachtmaster 2 is a full-fledged tool watch for professional skippers.

The complicated Rolex: from the Sky-Dweller to the Yacht-Master 2

The Rolex Yachtmaster 2 is bold and hefty; it’s a regatta timer and something you will, on paper, disregard when compared to a Rolex Sky-Dweller. The Rolex Yachtmaster 2 was conceived to provide professional skippers with a wrist instrument capable of accurately measuring the countdown to start a regatta.

The link between Rolex and yachting is long-established: the brand has associated its image with several sailing competitions like the Farr 40 or the Sidney–Hobart ever since. Pictured below is a map of the current partnerships.

The 5 to 10 minutes preceding the start of a regatta are paramount to any skipper and their crew; last-minute performance before the start is triggered can separate victory from defeat.

Most Regatta watches do not offer a dedicated function but make the most of ordinary chronograph functions. In contrast, the Rolex Yachtmaster II has a dedicated counter on the dial, coaxial to the bezel, equipped with a graduated scale from 0 to 10 minutes and an easy-to-read arrow hand.

The Countdown function: how to activate it.

The timer setting is straightforward and achieved by combining the bezel, crown and button at 4 o’clock in this sequence. The first operation is to rotate the bezel counter-clockwise to activate the small countdown counter adjustment system.

The bezel will automatically lock after a 90° rotation or when the “Yacht-Master II” writing appears on the right-hand side of the watch (the rotation axis of the crown ideally cuts the wording in two halves). Subsequently, please push the button located at 4 o’clock. Unscrew the crown until it locks in position 1 ; from that moment on, you can control the adjustment of the (jumping) 10-minute scale in one-minute intervals by rotating the crown clockwise.

After stopping the minute counter on the desired value, you need to rotate the bezel clockwise until it clicks into the position where the “Yacht-Master II” writing is again aligned at the bottom (-90 °, back to the original place).

At the end of this rotation, the two-minute scales, located on the bezel and the dial, respectively, will be fully aligned. By screwing back in the winding crown, you can restart the countdown (using the button at 2 o’clock); the red hand in the middle will start running, and the minutes’ countdown will begin .

During the countdown, you can stop the hand can by using the button at 2 o’clock or re-set the complete countdown with the button at 4 o’clock (Flyback). The countdown will start from the original position in the second case scenario. When the countdown has finished, the minute’s hand will also stop, while the second’s hand will continue to run indefinitely. The Rolex Yachtmaster II is a chronograph with a Flyback function .

The 2017 Rolex Yachtmaster II 116680 reference has replaced the previous reference by introducing a series of updates ; the new version is now equipped with Mercedes-styled hands, thus aligning itself with the family feeling of the other Oyster Perpetual divers, like the Submariner. Moreover, new applied indices located at 12 and 6′ clock have been launched (arrow-shaped and rectangular-shaped, respectively).

Ring Command and calibre 4161

The Ring Command bezel is integrated with the calibre and is an active part of the user experience. The level of complication and perfection this mechanism requires (firm clicks and no play) is more challenging than any other Rolex timepiece, making this watch extremely attractive.

At the same time, as per the usual Rolex tradition, the complication is concealed through a simplified aesthetic , although the dial is still more complex and crowded than those standards that Rolex has made us accustomed to, and this is one of the reasons why a Rolex Yachtmaster II is rarely a first choice when it comes to selecting a timepiece.

Rolex Yachtmaster Prices

The price list starts with the Yacht-Master 37 mm at 14,450 Euros and grows to the 43,800 Euros needed for a Yacht-Master 2 model in yellow gold . Commissioned by the former rolex ceo for himself to commemorate rolex's 10 millionth chronometer, it's the most yacht-master of yacht-masters..

Rolex doesn't really make unique watches – at least, not that we hear about. That's what makes this platinum Yacht-Master, to be auctioned at Monaco Legend on April 22, so exceptional. It's a one-off prototype Yacht-Master commissioned by former Rolex CEO Patrick Heiniger in 1992, who had taken over as the CEO from his father, André, that same year.

Heiniger ordered the watch to celebrate the production of Rolex's 10 millionth chronometer-certified movement, as shown by the "Dix Millionieme Chronometre" on the dial. In addition to the platinum case, bracelet, and flip-lock clasp, the unique grey dial is set with blue sapphires and diamonds. The whole package is wonderful and opulent and gaudy in the best way possible. Rolex introduced the Yacht-Master line in 1992 as a kind of luxe alternative to the Submariner – the Sub was for divers in the ocean, the Yacht-Master for those cruising topside – and this prototype is the most Yacht-Master of Yacht-Masters.

The unique platinum Yacht-Master on Mark's wrist

For about as long as it's been around, Rolex has made accuracy and producing chronometers core to its identity and its omnipresent marketing. It's even given other landmark chronometers (the 50,000th or 100,000th, for example) to historical figures like Churchill and Eisenhower. But for number 10 million, it went all out with a platinum Yacht-Master.

In other words, when Rolex wanted to celebrate the most Rolex of anniversaries, this is how it did so. And it celebrated in the most Rolex of ways: the watch wasn't intended for the public, only Heiniger himself. By the way, it was an achievement worth celebrating – as our old friend Joe Thompson reported way back in 2010, Rolex made another seven million chronometers from 2000 through 2010, blowing by its next closest competitor, Omega, which produced 2.3 million during the same period.

According to Davide Parmegiani of Monaco Legend Group, on the day Heiniger introduced the new yellow-gold Yacht-Master in 1992, he had this platinum prototype on his wrist. Heiniger was CEO until 2008, and the Yacht-Master would be the only new model line he introduced during his tenure. Heiniger was just the third person to hold the top job at Rolex, after his father, who had run Rolex South America, took over the CEO position when Hans Wilsdorf died in 1960 (the job was left open for two years after Wilsdorf's death).

Monaco Legend Group has placed the estimate at €1 million to ⁠€2 million (about $1.1 to $2.2 million), and has even guaranteed the low estimate to the consignor, said to be a descendant of the Heiniger family.

This isn't the first platinum Rolex with Heiniger provenance we've seen over the past few years, and those previous watches have already brought in records, setting the mark for what a modern Rolex can achieve at auction.

In the late '90s, Heiniger also commissioned a series of platinum Daytonas – it's thought four were made, and that Heiniger kept one for himself. We've seen three sell at auction over the past five years, all with the reference number 16516 and each with a unique dial. In 2018, we saw the first appear: a platinum Daytona with a black mother-of-pearl dial. It sold for about $872,000 at Sotheby's . Then, in 2020, a 16516 with a lapis lazuli dial sold for $3.27 million . It set a record not just for an automatic Daytona, but any modern Rolex at auction. It was followed closely by the third example, a turquoise "Stella" 16516 that sold for $3.14 million in 2021 .

Unique platinum Daytonas, also commissioned by Heiniger – both sold for more than $3 million at Sotheby's over the past three years.

But this Yacht-Master is something different and completely unique. It also comes on a full platinum bracelet. And while at least a few of those Daytonas were gifts, the Yacht-Master was commissioned by Heiniger, for Heiniger.

"It's truly a prototype," said Justin Gruenberg of Loupe This and The Keystone. "Unlike those Daytonas, it wasn't serially produced, and has no serial or model number on it." As Parmegiani explained to us, it'd be years before Rolex made a platinum professional watch in series – the platinum Daytona only entered the catalog in 2013. 

While the Daytona has a lore all its own, the Yacht-Master isn't exactly considered "collectible" by modern standards – not yet, at least. You either love it or hate it. And especially among vintage collectors, more hate than love the Yacht-Master. 

"Like other relatively unpopular models – the original Explorer II 1655, the Milgauss – as style evolves, at a certain point there could be more of an appreciation for the Yacht-Master than there is today," Gruenberg said.

Meanwhile, some have already come around on the Yacht-Master, and this one in particular.

"It exemplifies today's trend of 'quiet luxury,'" dealer Zoe Abelson said, "with such a classic sporty design in a full platinum case and a silver dial that makes the diamonds somehow look subtle." While the platinum Yacht-Master might be the pinnacle of modern Rolex, it doesn't exactly scream so, even with its diamond and sapphire indices. Sure, it's a lot, but relatively subtle, as much as sapphires and diamonds on a platinum Rolex can ever really be subtle.

Most I talked to seemed to agree that despite (or perhaps, because of ) its love-it-or-hate-it aesthetic, the Yacht-Master should surpass the record for a modern Rolex set by that lapis lazuli Daytona ($3.27 million). As the 1990s edge farther into the rearview and attain the status of vintage, or at least "neo-vintage," we're starting to see collectors take more interest in this era of Rolex and figuring out the most collectible watches from the period. As far as rarity, none can match a unique Yacht-Master, even if the model itself is still a bit of an odd duck.

No, it's not Paul Newman's Paul Newman , the Bao Dai , or even Marlon Brando's GMT-Master , and it might not bring in bidders from outside watches – it's a Rolex celebrating Rolex . Parmegiani even admitted to us that, if a larger auction had been able to take this Yacht-Master on an international roadshow to tell its story, it might achieve a bigger result. Still, he's confident that smart collectors are paying attention and will understand the value of a truly one-of-one Yacht-Master. 

That's because, while a four-digit vintage Rolex might capture the heart (or at least, my heart) in a way a 1992 Yacht-Master never could, this platinum Yacht-Master is perhaps the first opportunity bidders have ever had to buy a guaranteed unique Rolex, and one with all kinds of historical importance to the brand. That's worth a lot, and by the time auction day rolls around, could make for a record-setting result.

As Rolex gets bigger and continues to command more of the watch world's attention, the myth around the brand also grows. And with that, watches like this become more interesting. Watches that are important if for no other reason than Rolex made them to be important, even if it never exactly intended for the public to see them.

Update: this Yacht-Master sold for $2.57 million (including buyer's premium) at Monaco Legend on April 22.

The Rarest Rolex Yacht-Master Ever Made Just Sold For $4 Million

When it comes to the world’s biggest watch auctions, Rolex is a brand that’s always very well represented, with rare and vintage pieces from the brand regularly selling for big bucks. But a luxe take on an otherwise somewhat overlooked Rolex watch (at least from an auction result perspective) has just sold for a particularly hefty sum…

First introduced in 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master is a bit of an unusual beast. It’s very similar to the Submariner, arguably Rolex’s most iconic watch, yet it isn’t quite as water-resistant (only rated to 100m compared to the Sub’s 300m) and features a more tactile, distinct bezel. Essentially, it’s a luxury Submariner, meant more for above-water adventures than properly aquatic ones.

Perhaps it’s because of its relatively short history, but the Yacht-Master has never been an auction darling – at least compared to models like the Daytona or GMT-Master. However, one Yacht-Master has made a big splash at Monaco Legend Auctions’ Exclusive Timepieces auction over the weekend.

The watch in question? A fully platinum piece unique ref. 16620PT once owned by the former CEO of Rolex, Patrick Heiniger, which sold for a whopping 2.625 million USD (~3.928 million AUD).

Some more details about the one-off watch: as mentioned above, it features a platinum case, bezel and bracelet. If that wasn’t luxurious enough, it also features diamond and sapphire indices. Very bougie.

But what’s really cool about it is that it’s got a unique dial colour – a very light grey – as well as the text “Dix Millionième Chronometre” in place of the model name and chronometer certification. It also reportedly has a specially-engraved automatic rotor.

As you may have guessed, the model was produced for Patrick Heiniger to commemorate Rolex producing 10 million chronometers – an outstanding achievement for the brand. The Yacht-Master was also the only new Rolex model introduced during Heiniger’s tenure (indeed, it was released the same year he took the reigns of the legendary Swiss brand), so the model had a particular significance to him.

In short: it’s the rarest Yacht-Master ever made, and now it’s officially the most expensive, too.

This Yacht-Master isn’t the only piece unique Rolex produced in the 90s. Heiniger also had a few platinum Daytonas with precious stone dials made, which he gave to friends and associates.

One of those, the Rolex Daytona Lapis Lazuli Platinum ref. 16516, sold for 3.27 million USD (~4.89 million AUD) back in 2020, making it the most expensive platinum Rolex ever sold.

A Unique Platinum Yacht-Master at Monaco Legend Group

There is nothing that gets watch collectors more excited than a pièce unique watch. And if it is a Rolex, the feverish excitement gets turned up to 11! So what if the Rolex timepiece were a special commission from the President of Rolex to celebrate the 10 millionth chronometer movement made by the brand? That sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? But it really is — a unique all-platinum Yacht-Master is being offered by Monaco Legend Group in its upcoming Exclusive Timepieces sale on April 22nd and 23rd. We’re pretty sure this watch will set a world record price…

This very special Yacht-Master is made entirely in platinum, and out of all the Yacht-Master models in production, it most closely resembles the reference 16620. But make no mistake, it is a very different beast. The production model only has a platinum bezel and dial, but the unique watch also has a platinum case, bracelet and crown, with the Yacht-Master reference stamped in the caseback. The Oyster bracelet, complete with flip lock, is also unique and is very different to the first platinum Oyster bracelets that were made for the anniversary Daytona. The dial is in a unique hue and features diamond hour markers with baguette-cut sapphires at six and nine o’clock, a triangular-cut sapphire at 12, with the milestone “DIX MILLIONIEME CHRONOMETRE” proudly displayed on the dial.

André Heiniger became the president of Rolex in 1964, and was succeeded by his son Patrick Heiniger who helmed the company from 1992 to 2008. The Heiniger family were rightly proud of how they have brought all manufacturing in-house, so when the company hit 10 million chronometers, the milestone was marked by the creation of a specially engraved rotor, which was then placed in the specially commissioned platinum Yacht-Master. This watch has remained with the family until now, when it will be auctioned in Monaco.

The Heiniger family was responsible for establishing Rolex as the ultra-luxury brand that it is today, and André and Patrick were known to have created some of the most interesting and sought-after watches in Rolex collecting circles for themselves or friends. When these watches appear at market, they always command massive prices at auction, such as the trio of platinum Daytonas with unique stone dials (special reference 16516) that were sold over the past few years. The family also loved watches that were extravagant and fun, such as the Daytona reference 116598 SACO, known as the Leopard, that was devised by Patrick Heiniger and inspired by his then-girlfriend Nina Stevens.

Monaco Legend Group Co-Chairman, Davide Parmegiani, could not be more thrilled to have such a piece to offer in the spring sale. “Rolex spent the last 80 years marketing the importance of their movements and the fact that they are officially chronometer certified. Since the mid-1950s Rolex was pointing out that they were the leading brand making chronometers. So, we can truly understand how important it is that we have the 10 millionth officially certified chronometer in a prototype watch. Moreover, the watch is made of the rarest of metals with an incredible unique dial, and it comes with outstanding provenance directly from the family that made an important mark on the history of the Rolex company. Compare this to the $17 million paid for the Paul Newman, which was solely for the provenance that it was Mr Newman’s watch; this is a Rolex made by the President of the company for his family, and a unique piece that was never offered for sale. For me, this is something really incredible!

Other highlights in the sale include a Patek Philippe Nautilus from the personal collection of John Goldberger. The white gold reference 3700 is fresh to the market, having been in Goldberger’s collection for over two decades. The watch was a special order by Sultan Qaboos of Oman and features the Khanjar dagger and swords on the dial, and is one of three known examples that were specially made for the Sultan.

According to Parmegiani, “This is a very special watch from one of the most important collectors in the world. The condition is astonishing! Of the three pieces that are known, I would say without a doubt that this is the best preserved and offers an incredible opportunity for collectors of issued watches, or indeed those with a particular focus on Patek Philippe’s most iconic sports watch.”

Another important lot is a Patek Philippe World Time reference 2523/1, one of the most exclusive of all vintage Patek Philippe wristwatches with its iconic two-crown case. Only 15 examples were ever made in yellow gold, and the watch being auctioned in the Monaco Legend Group sale is offered for only the second time, having been sold by the original owner at auction in 2013. The watch comes complete with its original certificate that states it was originally sold in 1968, and it remains in astonishingly good condition — likely because it has been worn very sparingly and has most likely spent much of the past decade in a safe box. The oxidation that is slowly appearing on parts of the case that is still in good shape with crisp sides, sharp facets and a beautiful satin finish, is testament to the watch’s careful ownership. “This timepiece is a true grail and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the connoisseur collector,” according to Parmegiani.

The fact that Monaco Legend Group has secured such incredible lots, including the pièce unique Rolex Yacht-Master, is testament to how important the auction house is in collectors’ minds. All the lots in the catalog will be auctioned on 22nd and 23rd April at Le Méridien Beach Plaza in Monte Carlo, with viewings taking place on Thursday 20th April and Friday 21st April.

With its unwavering commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge innovation, MYS2023 has redefined the very essence of luxury in the yachting world .

One of the highlights of MYS2023 was the return and maturation of the Sustainability Hub—an exhibition area dedicated to showcasing companies specializing in sustainable technologies aimed at reducing the environmental impact of super-yachts . Located in the expansive main exhibition space, this hub served as an incubator for groundbreaking and eco-friendly solutions, one of which was an IUM startup!

This year, the Sustainability Hub continued to bridge the gap between established companies offering tried-and-true sustainable alternatives and budding start-ups with their forward-thinking ideas . The selection process for participants was carried out in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation , ensuring that only those with genuine and viable sustainable solutions graced the exhibition floor.

As I explored the Sustainability Hub, I couldn’t help but admire the collective dedication to a greener, more responsible future for the yachting industry.

Gaëlle Tallarida , Managing Director of the MYS, aptly emphasized the show’s commitment to sustainability, underlining how the Monaco Yacht Show has been a trailblazer in raising environmental awareness since its pioneering move to join the Carbon Neutral program in 2005 . I had the pleasure of talking to her after one of the many sustainability panel discussions that were a part of the show. The Sustainability Hub, now in its second year, stands as a testament to the show’s relentless pursuit of eco-friendly alternatives.

The Monaco Yacht Show’s partnership with Siemens Energy was, as the sponsor of the Sustainability Hub, an exciting development. This collaboration offered a unique opportunity for all stakeholders to engage with Siemens Energy and delve into the integration of sustainable energy sources and clean fuels into an exclusive Energy Management and Propulsion System designed for electric and hybrid yachts. It’s an initiative aimed at not just reducing but actively controlling emissions—a bold step towards a responsible and environmentally friendly approach throughout the yachting industry.

Networking Opportunities

Networking opportunities at MYS2023 were as enriching as they were abundant. Engaging with exhibitors, partners, and fellow attendees allowed me to delve deeper into the sustainability initiatives within the yachting industry . Collaborations, discussions, and shared insights with industry leaders left an indelible mark on my perspective.

I got to meet not only amazing individuals (some of whom are IUM alumni) but also learned an immense amount about the target group of the MYS and its high-end luxury clientele.

A Knowledgeable Experience

In conclusion, my experience at the Monaco Yacht Show was not just a testament to luxury but a testament to the industry’s commitment to sustainability . MYS2023 showcased advanced design, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. It reaffirmed that in an industry as opulent as yachting, embracing sustainability is not just a choice but a collective responsibility—a responsibility that I believe will shape the future of luxury in the yachting world.

The Monaco Yacht Show is a voyage into the future, where innovation, luxury, and sustainability converge . It has left an indelible mark on my journey as a student of Sustainability and Innovation Management, reminding me that the future of luxury lies in the hands of those who are committed to treading a sustainable path.

I am immensely grateful to have been granted access to this show and see it as a huge privilege as one of two ambassadors of the MSc in Sustainability and Innovation Management, which many professionals showed immense interest in.

The Heiniger family were rightly proud of how they have brought all manufacturing in-house, so when the company hit 10 million chronometers, the milestone was marked by the creation of a specially engraved rotor, which was then placed in the specially commissioned platinum Yacht-Master. This watch has remained with the family until now, when it will be auctioned in Monaco.

The Heiniger family was responsible for establishing Rolex as the ultra-luxury brand that it is today, and André and Patrick were known to have created some of the most interesting and sought-after watches in Rolex collecting circles for themselves or friends. When these watches appear at market, they always command massive prices at auction, such as the trio of platinum Daytonas with unique stone dials (special reference 16516) that were sold over the past few years. The family also loved watches that were extravagant and fun, such as the Daytona reference 116598 SACO, known as the Leopard, that was devised by Patrick Heiniger and inspired by his then-girlfriend Nina Stevens.

Monaco Legend Group Co-Chairman, Davide Parmegiani, could not be more thrilled to have such a piece to offer in the spring sale. “Rolex spent the last 80 years marketing the importance of their movements and the fact that they are officially chronometer certified. Since the mid-1950s Rolex was pointing out that they were the leading brand making chronometers. So, we can truly understand how important it is that we have the 10 millionth officially certified chronometer in a prototype watch. Moreover, the watch is made of the rarest of metals with an incredible unique dial, and it comes with outstanding provenance directly from the family that made an important mark on the history of the Rolex company. Compare this to the $17 million paid for the Paul Newman, which was solely for the provenance that it was Mr Newman’s watch; this is a Rolex made by the President of the company for his family, and a unique piece that was never offered for sale. For me, this is something really incredible!

The One and Only Rolex Yacht-Master in Platinum

Monaco Legend Group is excited to offer a unique and very special Rolex Yacht-Master that has been consigned for the April sale. The watch is made entirely in platinum and is a prototype ordered by the Heiniger family. Andre Heiniger became the president of Rolex in 1964 and was succeeded by Patrick Heiniger, who took over from his father, in 1992. The Heiniger father and son duo led the brand through some of its most important moments and are credited with establishing the brand as the ultimate luxury business; a legacy of their personal and professional relationship.

The Heiniger family was known to have created some very interesting and unique watches that are now highly prized by collectors, such as the trio of platinum Daytonas with unique stone dials with special reference 16 516. It is also believed that the Daytona reference 116 598 SACO, known as the Leopard, was inspired by Patrick Heiniger’s then-girlfriend Nina Stevens. Today Monaco Legend Group presents another special piece created by the Heinigers, a one and only platinum watch, made to commemorate the ten-millionth chronometer movement – a piece unique Yacht-Master.  The watch is made entirely in platinum and features the Yacht-Master reference in the case back. Furthermore, the watch is fitted with a platinum Oyster bracelet, complete with flip lock, which is also unique. The dial features diamond hour markers with baguette-cut sapphires at six and nine and a triangular-cut sapphire 12. Similar in some ways to the known Serti dials, this unique silver dial has a one of a kind colour and finish and is signed “DIX MILLIONIEME CHRONOMETRE”.

Rolex has been known for almost a century as making chronometer movement driven watches available in its wristwatches. When it completed its 10th million, a special occasion by any standards, the moment was marked by the creation of a specially engraved rotor. This movement was then placed in the present platinum Yacht-Master and remained with the family until today and marks a very important moment in time for Rolex.
