Riva, the new jewel. The world of yachting is ready to welcome the first 50-METER M/Y RIVA
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he first 50-meter yacht by Riva will be built in the Group’s shipyards in Ancona, which specialize in the construction of steel, aluminum and composite material yachts between 45 and 90 meters in length and which will witness the birth of this new yacht after building the brand’s current flagship, the 122’ Mythos.
THE NEW RIVA RANGE IN STEEL IS BORN. THE FUTURE IS LARGER THAN EVER.
During the 2014 monaco boat show riva presented its innovative full custom line, which, starting from the first 50-meter project, will develop further with a second 68-meter yacht, and will reach lengths of 100 meters over the next few years, “i’d love to try and cruise with her…” is the wish expressed by eng. carlo riva himself. the same wish shared by the entire world of yachting, who is ready to welcome riva’s new jewel..
“Building in fiberglass is undoubtedly easier than building in wood. Building well, though, is difficult.” Paraphrasing this statement made by Carlo Riva in the late 1960s by replacing the word fiberglass with the word steel would be enough to summarize the inextinguishable drive that has always pushed the iconic brand of worldwide yachting towards the future and innovation, heading for perfection.
Because this is Riva’s DNA: it was in the past as much as it is in the present. Today, the brand has chosen one of its most beloved locations, Montecarlo, and particularly the charming Aquarama Lounge, on the terrace of the Yacht Club de Monaco, to announce that it is ready to seduce the world once more, making its debut in a market segment to which its reputation has naturally led it and to which it has ideally always belonged.
Riva is announcing the creation of its new full custom line in steel, which, starting off with a first 50-meter long project, followed by a second 68-meter yacht, will develop further over the next few years to include a range of crafts up to 100 meters in length. Between the 1960s and the 1970s, Eng. Carlo Riva, through his Yacht Division, had started to ‘think big’ – first by cooperating with Northern European shipyards and building the famous “Caravelle” and “Atlantic” M/Y series; then establishing a historic partnership with CRN, thanks to which six motor yachts exceeding 20 meters in length in the “Marco Polo” series and two 90-foot and 100-foot “Vespucci” crafts were built between1970 and 1978. Today, his project turns into reality. And the baton, in this relay, has ideally been taken by ‘his’ Riva company, now a member of the Ferretti Group.
Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group’s CEO, is understandably very excited to present this new adventure: “Just over three months ago, again in Montecarlo, we celebrated the debut of the 122’ Mythos, the flagship of the brand and Riva’s first yacht to be entirely built using a light alloy. Today is another extraordinary day, because Carlo Riva’s idea to build large yachts is finally turning into reality. Riva is ready to step into this market segment as a leader. Thanks to the support of our shareholders, who are truly in love with this brand, and thanks to the efforts of the numerous teams involved in this project, we will be able to offer owners magnificent works of art cruising the seas, characterized by Riva’s unmistakable style. From now on, everybody will immediately recognize a Riva creation not only when looking at an Iseo, an 86’ Domino or a 122’ Mythos, but also when admiring one of these new yachts-to be.”
Riva’s new line will include displacement yachts fully customizable by the owner in terms of fittings and interior decor and will be characterized by a very innovative look and style, somehow different from Riva’s traditional classical lines. Featuring slender, streamlined and dynamic profiles and a very sober, clean design, these yachts will be truly unique works of art fully embodying Riva’s DNA. Every owner will enjoy a unique experience: supported by Officina Italiana Design – the firm that deigns the brand’s entire range – and by Ferretti Group’s engineers, architects and designers, as well as by his own consultants, he will embark upon a fascinating path that, day after day, will lead him to owning something more than any other owner in the world – ‘his own’ Riva mega yacht, a unique creation by an iconic yachting brand.
Mauro Micheli, the designer and co-founder, with Sergio Beretta, of Officina Italiana Design, is really enthusiastic about this project: “I am thrilled by this new challenge and can’t wait to ‘dive’ into designing this new line. Riva – continues Micheli – is probably the only yachting brand that has been capable of creating, throughout its history, true icons which can be recognized everywhere in the world. And it managed to do so because it was always focused on innovation and perfection. Aquarama – only to mention the most famous model – was so innovative mainly as a result of its creators’ constant search for flawless quality. Thus drive towards perfection is inextinguishable for us too, who have ideally taken the baton of Riva’s tradition. This is why I am so eager to start. Riva is ready to ‘leave its mark’ also on these future ‘giants of the sea’.”
50-METER M/Y RIVA
Various very spacious areas will be devoted to relaxation and entertainment, to make sure all guests can enjoy onboard life to the fullest and in the utmost comfort during both daytime and nighttime. While the large outdoor dinette at the bow (located just before a garage fitting thesecond tender and the technical area with two jet skis), will ensure the utmost privacy, the aft part of each deck will be fitted with large outdoor spaces to be used for meals or simply relaxation.
The cockpit on the main deck will include a lounge area with fixed sofas facing each other, while the upper deck may be furnished with a large dining table; the sun deck will feature freestanding seats plus a Jacuzzi with sun pads and loungers arranged around it at the bow. The aft area on the lower deck is really magnificent – a real beach club with a cocktail bar and an indoor living room that can be further extended outside, both towards the stern – thanks to the collapsible door turning into a swimming platform – and to starboard, thanks to a second optional door converting into a terrace at the sea level. The innovative float-in garage, which can store a tender up to almost 6 meters in length, will in turn open on the left bulwark, allowing for very easy launching and haulage operations.
The interior decor and fittings will be fully customizable to the owner’s taste. The shipyard will propose several layout versions for the main deck and the upper deck, which may be entirely arranged as living areas or include alternating lounge areas and stylishly furnished dining areas. The true protagonist on the main deck will be the master stateroom, which will be located across the entire bow area and will include four different sections: a private living room, a large walk-in wardrobe, a double room, and, at the extreme bow, an amazingly wide bathroom with two toilets and twin washbasins. Both bulwarks in this suite may be collapsible upon request, thus creating exclusive terraces overlooking the sea. The guest area, below deck, includes four VIP cabins, all having similar sizes and features and fitted with a double bed, a vanity set-desk area, and a large private head. Upon request, the guest cabins can be replaced by other rooms allowing the owner and his guests to enjoy their spare time in total relaxation, for example a gym or a SPA, or even a second master cabin.
Great care has been devoted to the crew quarters too. The galley, located on the main deck, the pilot station on the upper deck, and the sailor cabins on the lower deck will all be connected, thereby allowing the crew to move unseen without affecting the guests’ privacy. While the owner will be able to enjoy almost ‘royal’ spaces, the captain too will benefit from a carefully designed and very comfortable en-suite cabin, located to starboard on the upper deck. This will be part of a larger area entirely devoted to technical operations and strategically arranged behind the pilot station room. The crew cabins, located on the lower deck, will host up to eight more staff members in one en-suite cabin for the hostesses and two more double cabins, with bunk beds, for the sailors. The crew quarters will also include a large dinette with a galley.
The new 50-meter Riva may be equipped with two possible engine sets: either two CAT C32 2100 rpm engines or two MAN D2862 LE 466 2100 rpm engines, both capable of pushing the yacht to a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots (preliminary data). The transatlantic range at a cost-saving cruising speed of 11 knots is extremely interesting, as it will reach 3,800 nautical miles. Two zero speed stabilizing fins will be installed standard, to ensure maximum comfort and stability even when the yacht is at anchor.

Just before sunset of a steamy June evening in Venice, Italy, men in black tie hop off sleek wooden water taxis and limo tenders in front of the historic Arsenale, while female passengers, dressed in scrappy, shimmery finery, step cautiously so as not to catch their pencil-thin heels in the gaps of the planked docks. Sipping Champagne they make their way down a candlelit blue carpet along the water’s edge into the canopied party.

The ambience and mood of the festivities befit a royal marriage. But the entrance that the assembled guests await with increasing anticipation is not that of a bride in a flowing white gown. Rather, it’s a marine vessel: Riva ’s new flagship yacht, the Riva 50M, or as Alberto Galassi, CEO of Italian parent company Ferretti Group, later calls it, “Riva Cinquanta Metri.”
The crowd of yacht owners and the like will have to wait. First comes dinner, prepared by Galassi’s childhood friend— and Michelin three-star chef— Massimo Bottura , who brought along the entire staff of his Osteria Francescana in Modena to do the cooking.
After dessert the orchestra kicks in, spotlights sweep the horizon, and fireworks light up the starry sky. Finally it’s here: The 164-foot Race , Riva’s largest vessel ever, grandly cruises into the water space in front of the venerable Venetian shipyard. The captain gracefully turns the superyacht this way and that, as if Race were preening down a catwalk, giving the crowd a look at each side of the yacht. Although much, much bigger than the Aquaramas and Floridas of old, the multi-deck superyacht is still clearly recognizable as a Riva thanks to its head-turning silver hull, glossy mahogany handrails and teak flooring that flag this boat as Aquarama kin.
Fireworks welcomed Race into the lagoon in front of Venice’s Arsenale Federico Ferretti
“You can tell a Ferrari from other sports cars. You can tell a Riva from other boats. That’s the mission,” Galassi explains over lunch at the Hotel Danieli the next day, his buoyant and humorous mood reflecting the success of the prior night’s gala.
To be sure, for many yachting enthusiasts, the name “Riva” conjures up beautiful and speedy wooden boats helmed by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan, both on-screen and off. Founded in 1842 on the shore of Italy’s Lake Iseo by Pietro Riva, the company became known in the 1950s for the runabouts that sped along Italian lakes and the Mediterranean: elegant, well-crafted polished-wood pleasure boats. Riva started with the Ariston, then revealed the Tritone (the first two-engine yacht), the Sebino (the company’s first series) and, soon after, the Florida, made famous by Bardot (hers was a 1959 rendition). In 1969, Riva started building in fiberglass, which it still uses today, although it continued to produce runabouts in wood until 1996, when the last Aquarama Special was completed.
Commissioned by the serial-yacht-owning son of a man who started a very well-known automotive company, Race is the first example of what Galassi says will be not only a new line of superyachts but also a new era of building for Riva. Designed inside and out by Officina Italiana Design—the studio founded by longtime Riva designer Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta— along with Ferretti Group’s engineering team and the Ferretti Group Product Strategic Committee, the yacht has a profile that’s simple and clean, with a long foredeck, central superstructure and aggressive prow, all packaged in a metallic-paint hull that Galassi describes as the antithesis of a “white whale.”
Courtesy of Riva
It is also the manifestation of a wish that creative force Carlo Riva shared just before he died in 2017 at age 95. “This is the dream of Carlo Riva coming true,” Galassi says. “He told me one day, ‘Make a stainless-steel displacement Riva like we did in the ’60s,’” referring to the Caravelle and Atlantic motor-yacht series—steel boats, conceived by Carlo, that were considered the superyachts of that era.
Race , hull No. 1 of the new series, is constructed of steel and a light aluminum alloy and features a main-deck master suite with a private lounge (for the owner to watch his beloved auto racing), outfitted with a comfy white-leather U-shape sofa, a flat-screen TV and Ferrari memorabilia. This uncommon layout is made possible by the lower-deck placement of the kitchen, which is typically just aft of the master on the main deck. (A dumbwaiter connects all decks for easier food and beverage service.)
The master bedroom is decorated in grays and creams, a masculine yet sophisticated nod to the owner’s request for quiet tones. ( Race ’s owner selected Micheli for the interiors; subsequent Riva 50M buyers may bring aboard decorators of their own choosing.) A drop-down terrace provides an over-the-water relaxation space, incredible views and sea breezes—plus direct access to the water for those brave enough to dive the distance.
Alberto Cocchi
Four more staterooms reside on the lower deck, and a captain’s cabin is off the high-tech wheelhouse, equipped by Team Italia. A Ferrari racing seat takes center stage at the helm. Crew quarters are forward of the lower-deck cabins. Overall, the yacht accommodates 12 guests within its cavernous 30-foot beam, in addition to nine crew.
Throughout the yacht’s interior, soft fabrics and leather and neutral colors add to the feeling of serenity—as do the vessel’s generators, which, emitting less than 40 decibels of sound, are just a quiet hum, even when standing next to them in the engine room. A pair of MTU Iron MAN 8V 4000 M63 engines produce 1,360 hp each, propelling Race to a 15-knot top speed and providing a range of 3,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.
The skydeck, the uppermost of the four decks, will likely be a favorite spot for guests, thanks to the requisite hot tub, bar and lounging areas. The shade-supplying radar arch is in bold black, with stylized stainless-steel details easily seen from afar—a unique sight. “Get a look at the exterior navigation lights,” urges the fine-art-loving Galassi over lunch. “They are [like] a sculpture.”
The 50M’s water-level beach club stows a Williams Dieseljet 625 tender when the space is not in use by seaside sunners. But haul that thing out and you can open up the transom door and side hatch to take advantage of this sea-level entertainment deck and its breezy, open-air lounge with easy access to the water.
Besides kicking off a new superyacht series for Riva, the 50M lets the brand claim a spot at Ferretti Group’s new Superyacht Division in Ancona, Italy, where subsequent vessels will share construction space with the company’s other large bespoke yachts . Another thing they share: fulfilling ocean-lovers’ deepest desires.
“At the end of the day,” says Galassi, “you’re buying a dream.”

Race is a 2019 launch from Riva Yachts, heading up the new Superyachts Division.
Race is the first of Riva's new Superyachts Division, featuring the classic Riva / Officina Italiana exterior design adapted to a superyacht scale.
Carlo Riva's intention of adapting Riva to superyachts was to follow the long tradition of building high performance yachts of great design and beauty. It should also be economical, because by going slowly, you consume less and go further. The Superyachts Division will also be available in 60M, 70M and 90M.
Her light alloy pannelling and stainless steel was designed by a 3D mould, a first for Riva and highly complex feat of design and technology. Her deck Jacuzzi has been perfectly positioned to give a clear view of the horizon, and her on-board music and entertainment systems can be easily controlled by the owner's iPad or iPhone.
The dream of building light-alloy displacement yachts with completely customizable interiors is borne of the drive and innovation of Carlo Riva's 60s and 70s vision for the brand, thrust into the modern day under the Ferretti Group vision.

Riva’s First Superyacht
- By Diane M. Byrne
- Updated: July 28, 2020
In the early 1950s, a young man enthralled with his father’s boatbuilding company took over the family business. As sometimes happens when new generations step in, he wasn’t content to do the same thing his father, or his grandfather, had done. Strong ambition persuaded him to design and build pleasure boats, as opposed to the racing and commercial boats of the shipyard’s past. What’s more, he continuously wanted to outdo himself, focusing on creating motoryachts that were more than boats, as well as status symbols.
While the young Carlo Riva succeeded in all of this after taking the helm of Riva, there’s perhaps no better example of his driving ambition than the period from the mid-1960s into the 1970s, when he launched three limited series of motoryachts.
Not only were their steel hulls a marked change from the glistening mahogany of their sisterships, they were also far larger. The Atlantic series, at 88 feet, and the Caravelle series, at 74 feet, were astoundingly large for their eras. Between their style and the fact that they were faster than many other yachts at the time, they helped Riva find several clients.
More than 50 years later, the spirit of these series lives on with the Riva 50-Meter. It’s the first model in the Riva Superyachts Division and the second Riva constructed entirely of aluminum. At 160 feet, 9 inches length overall, she’s larger than any previous launch from the boatbuilder, but she upholds many of the same principles her predecessors established.
“She is full of personality, exactly like any other Riva yacht,” says Sergio Beretta, CEO and co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, the studio responsible for every modern-era Riva. “It is essentially a true connoisseur’s boat. In a nutshell, it is chic, and that is the whole logic behind it.”
Mauro Micheli, chief designer and co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, agrees. “It is certainly a boat with a very different character to its siblings” because of the LOA and four decks, he explains, “but references to Riva’s signature styling are a constant.”
That styling is well-known and detailed. For instance, Hull No. 1, Race, shows off varnished mahogany and stainless-steel handrails, complementing the metallic painted surfaces. Even the yacht’s wing stations have these handrail details. The richness of the high-gloss wood serves as a reminder that “artisanal craftsmanship is at the very core of each project,” Micheli asserts. “The handrails are the fil rouge [French for common thread] of the yacht.”
Further to the styling’s influences, Micheli mentions the Caravelle line, conceived in 1964. Its uncluttered, simple elegance inspired the team working on the 50-Meter. Though more angular than today’s yachts, the Caravelle had long lines and a proud bow—two timeless characteristics.
“They are the kind of lines that don’t necessarily set out to dazzle but still capture attention with their sheer simplicity,” Micheli says.
For the Riva 50-Meter, the studio focused on classic yet sleek lines. “Race has a great personality,” he says. “She has three straight lines that define each level. The design is clean. We refuse overworked, elaborate and redundant lines.”
Amid these lines are some of the owner’s particular requests. “He wanted lots of light and to enjoy the external panoramas,” Micheli says. While every Riva—indeed, every large yacht—these days incorporates large glass ports, Race’s owner felt it was especially important for the 50-Meter to have them, notably along the main and upper decks. Additionally, in an interesting twist on an indoor-outdoor area, the covered alfresco dining area aft on the upper deck has slide-open glass to each side.
In terms of the open alfresco areas, meanwhile, the owner wanted a front-row seat for when he was approaching shorelines. This explains why Race has cozy seating and viewing spots at the bow and up on the sun deck. Yet another request outside, for similar reasons: a walk-around hot tub and sun pads aft on the upper deck. The owner envisioned standing back here as Race entered a marina and tied up stern-to.
Inside is a relatively customary arrangement, with accommodations for 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms: a main-deck master and four guest staterooms below. However, the owner did request that the galley go belowdecks, with a dumbwaiter connecting it to each of the upper levels. The relocation of the galley permitted more room for the master stateroom.
With Hull No. 2 in the 50-Meter series under construction, Riva is poised to make its mark in the superyacht sector. Larger models are coming too, with the biggest being the 90-Meter (295 feet).
And while Carlo Riva didn’t live to see the 50-Meter launch, having died at age 95 in 2017, there’s no doubt he’d be proud. “The first time that engineer Carlo Riva saw the renderings of the first Riva 50-Meter mega-yacht, he said, ‘I’d like to try and cruise on her,’” Micheli recalls.
Perhaps the once-determined heir to the family business is doing that in spirit.

Riva – 50 Metre Race
SY65-Spring-2020
“Race”, is the name the owner chose. This jewel is the latest from the Riva boat yard which was founded by Carlo Riva . Today’s 50 metre is built in steel and aluminium at Riva’s Superyachts Division in Ancona which the yard’s in house engineering team drew up with input from Ferretti Group and Officina Italiana Design which has an exclusive design contract applicable to all Riva yachts. The owner contributed during the initial phases and requested custom built decor to the interior layout according to his personal tastes and chose free standing furniture for the exteriors. The exterior design work by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta offers timeless classic styling so as to avoid falling for what is currently labelled as trendy one moment, and is gone the very next. Long lasting traits instead like the aquamarine used for the waterline, embellishing steel elements applied to some of the structural parts with mahogany strips lining the bulwarks and the toe and grab rails.
Original video by the shipyard
Liberal use of this precious essence is also found below decks where this wood’s dark colour prevails over other components in polished steel, leather and some of the furniture’s diverse grey hues as well as several other details such as precious carpets that are deployed to protect Apuan white marble flooring. The same stone essentially but of the statuarietto variety, enriches coffee table tops and lines bathroom walls with darker streaks which highlight the contrast with the furniture’s mahogany lining and lacquered grey finishes. This styling is repeated along each of this 50 metres Riva yacht’s five decks which sports something just below 500 GRT in spite of the numerous liveable areas the owner and his guests can enjoy. The passage ways installed enhance an already enviable sense of privacy where separate corridors for crew and guests are the norm.
Stepping on board from the stern into a large cockpit with Nomex® , free standing furniture which is light in terms of weight and is practically insensitive to heat and cold and highly durable through time. It is generally used at best in the aerospace industry. A large shoe basket, an icemaker and a pop-up 55” television set complete the picture. The interiors, engine room or beach area can be accessed from here as well. The beach area comprises two platforms one on port side the other on starboard side resulting in a larger surface area engendering greater contact with the surrounding waters normally accessed by using the sets of carbon steps on each side, which can be also deployed to launch and recover a Williams Dieseljet 625 tender. Crossing the threshold leading into the interiors, visiting guests are confronted with an ample bright open space featuring large window like ports where there’s plenty of room for a living area equipped with a leather sofa seating up to eight, a television cabinet, and a dining area with a cut glass table and a seating capacity of up to ten adjacent to a pair of lateral doors opening out towards the exteriors. Enormous cut glass sliding doors seem to effectively reduce the dividing line between the surroundings and the numerous mirrored surface areas creating en ever growing play of bounding light which seems to increase the volume of the interiors further.
The bow area along the main deck reserved for the owner’s quarters covers a surface area of 70 square metres. The layout comprises three separate spots; a foyer with private study, a lounge with media room and the master cabin with bathroom en suite. Special care has been taken to dampen noise levels in the master cabin. At cruising speeds noise levels are never more than 40 Decibel. All of the four guest cabins, three of which are doubles and one is a twin, are situated along the lower deck as the crew quarters are. Obviously access to each is separate from the other. The crew’s quarters are inclusive of dinette, galley, cold cellar and storage facility. The captain’s cabin is situated adjacent to the helm controls station along the main deck which also hosts a covered living area, with sofa, armchairs, wine cellar and thanks to a dumb waiter this area can double as a place in which to enjoy evening drinks and exquisite dishes in the exterior dining area featuring a corian table for 14 and a pair of electric windscreens on each side.
Astern of this but separated by a 180° swivel and pop up television there’s a furnished area featuring custom built sofas and armchairs. To enjoy even greater privacy when tied up in a port, the bow lounge can be deployed instead. Beneath this there’s a hangar in which to stow a rescue craft and several water toys. The sundeck covers an area of 120 square metres, 90 of these are shaded by a hardtop. A sun bathing spot, a pool with an incorporated hydro massage, a dining zone with BBQ and a rotating pop up television set complete the picture. Every interior and exterior section sports Lutron domotic technology through which you can also exploit diversely lit scenarios accordingly. With a pair of 1,000KW MTU 8V4000M63 engines, Riva “Race” can reach a top speed of 15.5 knots and at 11.0 knots it can cover 3,500 nautical miles without having to refuel.
The technologies on the Riva Race
As a highly sophisticated yacht, Riva “Race” comes with the latest innovation in technologies, custom developed by two Italians highly specialized companies: Videoworks and Team Italia.
Videoworks ( www.videoworksgroup.com ) has designed the AV, IT, TV/Sat, CCTV, IP telephony and home automation system. The AV-IT system was designed according to the philosophy of a distributed system – every cabin/hall has a local rack containing the AV electronics. The audio system in the internal and external premium areas has the James Loudspeaker marine speakers. IP telephony is based on a Panasonic switchboard with fixed and cordless terminals.
The IT infrastructure (cabled and Wi-Fi) is made entirely with Cisco hardware, a world leader in terms of reliability and performance. IP telephony is based on a Panasonic switchboard with fixed and cordless terminals.
Thanks to its considerable experience and long-term partnership with Lutron (a world leading company in the production of light control systems), Videoworks has designed and built the on-board home automation system, i.e. the intelligent control of lights and blinds in the guest area, which makes time on board even more comfortable and pleasant.
The CCTV system is made up entirely of professional Panasonic products. It includes 5 high-resolution IP cameras and a network recorder for recording video flows and archiving them in encrypted form.
Additionally, the satellite TV receiving system has a double antenna with arbitrator, which guarantees optimal signal without blind spots.
Team Italia ( www.team-italia.it ) has designed the innovative I-Bridge® solution with multicontrol and 38” full HD stretched display.
Navigation is made easier by two integrated side flaps and by the exclusive TEAM Italia EMAS (Electronic Moving Assistant System), which processes the data from the 3D sensors and makes manoeuvring the yacht easier

Riva 50 Metri on the top step of the podium at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards 2020.
M/Y Race, the masterpiece by Riva Superyachts Division, has won the award in the “Outstanding Exterior Motor Yacht” category. Cortina D’Ampezzo, 3rd February 2020 – Riva rises above the competition at Cortina d’Ampezzo, home to the Superyacht Design Festival, during the awards ceremony at the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards 2020 on Sunday 2nd February. Riva 50 Metri M/Y Race, the first flagship in steel and aluminium by Riva Superyachts Division of Ancona, has won the prestigious award in the “Outstanding Exterior Motor Yacht” category. The jury appreciated its architecture and naval style as well as its fine engineering features, the design of its exteriors, and the innovative technological solutions. Designed by the Riva Superyachts Division engineering team in Ancona, Riva 50 Metri was built in collaboration with the Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and Officina Italiana Design, the firm run by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta that exclusively designs the entire Riva fleet. Named Race by its owner, it fulfilled the dream of Carlo Riva, a man driven by his ambition to go beyond limits, leading to the celebrated Caravelle and Atlantic motor yachts as far back as the '60s and '70s: grand craft made of steel, of which the new flagship is a worthy heir with its unrivalled standards of aesthetics, style, and innovation. "This award demonstrates that dreams do become reality and challenges always give you satisfaction” - Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group declared. “The dream we inherited from Carlo Riva is the biggest steel Riva yacht ever made. Our challenge was to bring the legend of the most famous shipyard in the world into 50 meters of beauty and technology. Judging by the success of this yacht, we made it." Riva 50 Metri respects and underscores the brand’s unmistakable features, from its meticulous attention to detail to its unrivalled beauty, as well as its superior standards in terms of comfort and safety. All of the design choices offer a perfect blend of practical features and aesthetics, with a focus on the comfort of the on-board exterior areas while guaranteeing an excellent sailing experience. Once again, this award is proof of Riva’s expertise in combining an ultra-contemporary vision of sailing with its legendary and lustrous 178 years of history.

RACE by Riva (50m)
Riva launched their new 50m superyacht race..
The new 50m yacht comes with a beam of 9 meters and has been designed by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta of the design studio Officina Italiana Design.
Alberto Galassi – CEO of the Ferretti Group comments:
“Riva 50 mt is a huge leap forward for Riva and for the world of yachting, in addition to being an amazing sight on the water. This yacht and her unique magnificence, amplified by her impressive size, also represents a remarkable achievement for the Riva Superyachts Division, which has built the biggest Riva ever made while meeting and enhancing the brand’s signature stylistic excellence. From the tiniest details to the breathtaking design, this 50-meter yacht is a treasure of beauty, illuminated by a legendary 177-year history and accompanied by an ultra-contemporary vision of yacht building. The production know-how that people admire in a work of this value is also the best possible example of the ‘Made In Italy’ manifesto that is the signature of each of our brands.”.
The yacht will attend the Venice Boat Show and the Monaco Yacht Show.

First 50m Riva superyacht Race premieres in Venice
Riva's first 50 metre superyacht Race , the flagship of the Riva range, has had its official premiere in Venice.
The yacht was unveiled at an exclusive and theatrical event at the historic Arsenale of Venice. Speaking at the event, Ferretti Group chief executive, Alberto Galassi, said: "The largest Riva, the dream of Carlo Riva that came true, a boat of immense beauty, could only make its debut at the Arsenale, which has been for centuries the largest naval factory in the world."
It comes after the yacht hit the water for the first time at Riva's Ancona based shipyard in March. Race is set to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
Speaking at the launch, Ferretti Group chief executive Alberto Galassi described Race as "a huge leap forward for Riva and the world of yachting."
He added: "This yacht and her unique magnificence, amplified by her impressive size, also represents a remarkable achievement for the Riva Superyachts Division, which has built the biggest Riva ever made while meeting and enhancing the brand’s signature stylistic excellence."
Developed in collaboration with Officina Italian Design , the Riva Superyacht series will eventually stretch up to 90 metres.
The four-deck Riva 50 Metri features accommodation for 12 guests in five cabins, including a main deck master suite. Other key features include a Jacuzzi on the sundeck, a stern garage with enough room to house a Williams Dieseljet 625 tender and a foredeck storage area suitable for a pair of Jet Skis. In an innovative move, the galley is situated on the lower deck, with a central dumb waiter allowing for discreet service to all four decks.
The Riva 50 Metri is reminiscent of classic Carlo Riva motor yachts, inspired by the Carvelle line from the 1960s and 70s. Riva is well known for its classic launches but it's lesser known that between 1960-70 Carlo Riva created four superyacht ranges called Carvelle, Marco Polo, Vespucci and Atlantic.
Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italian Design, previously said: “The first line will clearly draw inspiration from the yachts created by Carlo Riva in the early 1970s; the second will feature an unusual design, with stylistic features that will clearly convey Riva’s unmistakable style, together with a strong, distinctive character."
The Riva 50 Metri has been built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and will be offered as a semi-custom yacht, with an interior design created to the owner’s choice, something not seen on smaller Rivas previously. “Not only [does the Riva Superyacht Division] represent an extraordinary leap into the future, but also Riva will once more be able to meet the refined and sophisticated taste of its very demanding owners,” Galassi previously said.
Race's launch comes after Riva launched its first true superyacht and flagship, the 37 metre 122 Mythos named Sol , in 2014.

The best golf clubs in moscow: luxury, exclusivity, and entertainment.
By Walter Raymond
February 24, 2015
- The Best Golf Clubs in…
In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.
The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.
Golf Courses in Russia
The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.
Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club
The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.
Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club
The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.
Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club
This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.
Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia
Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world. ■

The Breakfast Club has been a locally-owned Moscow breakfast staple for 12 years. The food is delicious, and the portions are appropriate (not gigantic). They have stuffed biscuits and gravy which is biscuits cut in half with eggs and bacon in the middle, covered in in-house made sausage gravy. If you are ever in Moscow in the wee hours of the morning, this is the place to stop!!!

Braving the China Sea in a thrifted yacht and motley crew, all in the name of sustainability
K orean artist Song Ho-jun's yacht sailed 18 days to get to Hong Kong to participate in this year's Rolex China Sea Race that kicked off on March 27. Song's team of eight sailors - Team Random () - was the first Korean team to compete in the race. The team was sponsored by Bungaejangter, Korea's online secondhand trading app. [BUNGAEJANGTER]
HONG KONG — On April 19, 2013, Korean artist Song Ho-jun, 45, launched a homemade $500 satellite into space at the international space launch site in Kazakhstan, becoming the world's first individual to do so. Though he doesn't know what ended up happening to his satellite OpenSat, whether it's still drifting in orbit or burnt to a crisp, Song said his main objective in the first place was “to show the world that there's someone who actually brings an idea into action no matter how foolish they may seem.”
Eleven years later, on March 27, Song set sail on a new adventure, competing in this year's Rolex China Sea Race 2024 in Hong Kong with his own boat, again becoming the first Korean to do so.
The race, with a 62-year history, is known for being one of the most tactical and challenging offshore races, attracting many of the world's best sailors and yachts to Hong Kong.
The race is hosted by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex. Since obtaining the qualification to compete in this category 1 race — meaning long distance and offshore sailing where your yacht must be completely self-sufficient and able to withstand storms and serious emergencies — doesn't come easy, it was a surprise for Song and even the organizers themselves that the Korean team and Song's modest-looking yacht would have a chance. But the artist wanted to challenge the prejudice and show that he can make what others called a "crazy idea” into a reality.
Even Song's seven other crew members, who competed in the race as Team Random (), said they half doubted that they would be able to finish the race. For one, the yacht that Song purchased secondhand in 2021 was not meant for racing — it was one of those so-called furniture class yachts that people often purchase for leisure after retirement.
And more than half of the crew members in Team Random () were not professional sailors: Song only took up sailing as a hobby several years ago, Choe Sang-back is a music producer, Timothee Franco is a French photographer living in Korea, Kim Tae-ho used to work for a fintech company up until joining Song on this journey and Cho Byoung-chan dreams of sailing around the world, but is busy making ends meet by teaching scuba diving. Kwon Tae-woo and Kim Young-ho are the two oldest members in the crew who are most experienced. But Kim said his wife told him “half seriously and half-jokingly” to sign a divorce paper if he wants to go on this race after hearing how challenging and dangerous it can be for amateurs.
But that did not stop Song and he managed to pursuade his team. Song's motivation for entering the race was largely to get across the same message as before, but this time with an added value: sustainability.
On the day of the race, sailors of the other 20 boats looked all set, donned in their team uniforms, leisurely taking monumental photographs and being interviewed by different media. However, as newcomers to the race, Team Random () seemed to be on pins and needles, jumping around here and there and busy doing last minute safety checks on their yacht that Song described as "a Hyundai Elentra parked next to Ferraris and Porches — not that I'm looking down on the Korean automobile.”
"What I mean is that my yacht, compared to all the others competing in the race, is a slower one,” Song said.
"It'll be great if Team Random () wins the race, but that's not the whole reason we are here,” he added as he hoisted a sail with the logo of his sponsor, Bungaejangter, one of the country's largest online secondhand trading apps.
Korean artist Song Ho-jun sells many of his preowned things on Bungaejanter to come up with money to buy himself a yacht. [BUNGAEJANGTER]
To come up with the money to buy the yacht, he launched the “Song Ho-jun Yacht Project” on Bungaejangter, also known as Bunjang. On the platform, he put many of the collections that he had accumulated at his studio up for sale, including tools and equipment he had purchased to make the DIY satellite over a decade ago. He managed to earn around 41 million won ($30,340) by giving new life to his stuff that was doing nothing more than collecting dust, then got a loan from the bank to cover the rest of the sum to purchase the yacht for a little over 100 million won.
Witnessing what this eccentric artist was doing on her platform, Choi Jae-wha, CEO of Bungaejangter, thought there was no better way to actively show their support for sustainable consumption, which her company has advocated for since day one, than by backing Song.
“People continue to find new tastes and develop new interests every now and then. But it’s impossible for us to purchase new things whenever we go through that process,” Choi said.
“Sustainability has become a buzzword on all fronts, and consumption should also be sustainable. ‘To make consumption sustainable by giving second life to everything; waste nothing for the planet and your lifestyle’ — we take this very seriously, and this was a great opportunity to speak about it out loud through Song, especially when he’s in a race of one of the most sustainable sports.”
For the Rolex China Sea Race, yachts have to sail from Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, across the South China Sea to Subic Bay in the Philippines, for a total of 565 nautical miles — without a motor.
Clockwise from left, Choe Sang-back, Cho Byoung-chan, Kim Young-ho, Seo Kyoung-seok, Kwon Tae-woo, Timothee Franco, Kim Tae-ho and the yacht's skipper Song Ho-jun. Team Random () pose for a photograph after arriving at the Philippines’ Subic Bay on April 2. [BUNGAEJANGTER]
Team Random () reached the Philippines’ Subic Bay on their seventh day of sailing, just as they had anticipated. Having witnessed three teams drop out before or during the race, Song said it’s “a miracle that [his] team successfully and safely ended the race.”
“We experienced a number of moments where we got cold feet, like when a sail ripped right after we departed and the one we replaced it with ripped again about halfway into the race, water backing up from the sink and flooding the boat, as well as issues with the rudder. But we managed to overcome all those obstacles and finish the race. I just can’t believe it,” Song told the Korea JoongAng Daily on April 2, right after reaching the finishing point.
Though the race is over, Song says it only signals the start of his grand project.
“Most of the teams that participated in the race this year said they all felt the climate was abnormal,” Song said. "Many of them compete in this race regularly, and they said it was especially unusual this year. The race gets held around this time because April is a windy month. But we hardly had any wind and it was unusually warm. This was global warming. We were able to experience it, witness it and document it on tape.”
Crew member Seo Kyoung-seok is a documentary producer with expertise in filming in the wild.
Song's DIY satellite [BUNGAEJANGTER]
Song said it was similar to how his satellite launch was not done for the purpose of sending back information about space or to give GPS signals. "In fact, it didn't have any purpose,” he said.
"I just put my idea into action, and the fun part of it is witnessing how new discussions get generated from it.”
That is why participating in the race with Bungaejangter, according to Song, was more meaningful, as the company strives to raise awareness about sustainable consumption.
"Making consumption sustainable” is written across Song's yacht, which is a catchphrase of Bungaejangter. Song said he wasn't too keen of it when he was first putting the phrase across his yacht, but it's now engraved in his and all the other sailors’ hearts.
"As we witnessed all the plastic waste pollution in the ocean, we got to think about all the things we buy and throw away thoughtlessly just because they're cheap. It was us who ruined the ocean, and it was us who hastened global warming,” Song said. "Many of the participating teams also raised concerns about the fate of the race.”
Will Team Random () participate in the race next year?
“Definitely,” he said. “But first, I'll have to log into Bunjang and probably sell this yacht along with some more of my preowned stuff so I can come back with a faster racing yacht.”

Bruce Kessler , a prolific TV director as well as a noted yacht designer, died April 4 in Marina Del Rey, Calif. after a brief illness. He was 88.
His brother Stephen confirmed his death.
Kessler started out racing cars at the age of 17 and at 21, he crashed at night during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, bailing out of the car before it burst into flames. He survived two more crashes before retiring from racing at 26 in 1962.
With the help of Hawks as mentor, Kessler became a director for dozens of TV movies and series including “The Rockford Files,” “McCloud,” “Marcus Welby, MD,” “Mission: Impossible,” “The Knight Rider,” “The Fall Guy,” “CHiPs,” “Barnaby Jones,” “The Monkees,” “The A-Team” and “The Flying Nun.”
He later began designing boats, building a yacht, the Zopilote, built on the hull of a fishing trawler and created for marlin fishing. With his wife, actor Joan Freeman Kessler, he cruised and fished around North America. The couple circumnavigated the globe from 1990 to 1993, visiting 34 countries. The Zopilote’s innovative design proved influential and he became an authority on the subject. A model of the yacht is on display at the Del Ray Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey.
Born in Seattle, his family moved to Beverly Hills where he started his racing career among Hollywood celebrities such as James Dean and Steve McQueen.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; brothers Rick and Stephen and many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Bruce Kessler, who directed episodes of shows including The Monkees , It Takes a Thief , The Rockford Files , McCloud and The Commish when he wasn’t driving race cars, designing boats or circling the globe in a yacht, has died. He was 88.
Kessler died Thursday at his home in Marina del Rey after a brief illness, his brother, author and columnist Stephen Kessler, told The Hollywood Reporter .

Adrian schiller, star of 'the last kingdom,' dies at 60, firehouse frontman c.j. snare, who had hits in the '90s including "love of a lifetime," dies at 64.
Kessler served as second-unit director on Howard Hawks’ Red Line 7000 (1965), an action film about stock cars that starred James Caan , before embarking on a three-decade career as a director for television.
His credits included The Flying Nun , Adam-12 , Marcus Welby, M.D. , Get Christie Love! , Baretta , Switch , CHiPs , The A-Team , The Greatest American Hero , Hunter , Hardcastle and McCormick , The Fall Guy , Riptide , MacGyver , The Commish and Renegade , with the last episode of his career airing in 1997.
Bruce Michael Kessler was born in Seattle on March 23, 1936. He and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1946, and his parents, Jack and Nina, launched a ladies swimwear company in partnership with fashion designer Rose Marie Reid.
With the success of the business, they relocated to Beverly Hills, and Kessler would become pals with James Dean and Steve McQueen, future actors who were racing enthusiasts.
Kessler earned the nickname “Little Lead Foot” as a youngster, and when he was 17, he competed in amateur auto races driving a Jaguar XK120 owned by his mom.
Kessler was supposed to ride with Dean in his silver Porsche to a road race in Salinas, California, in September 1955, but “due to a last-minute change of plan drove up with another friend,” Stephen Kessler wrote last month in a column for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Dean would die in a car crash that day.
“My brother was 19 at the time, and that bit of luck was emblematic of his subsequent charmed life, on the track and off,” he added.
Shifting to show business, Kessler directed and produced The Sound of Speed (1962), a 19-minute, dialogue-free documentary about the Scarab race car, which he helped build. The short played at the Cannes Film Festival and got him work as a technical adviser on racing and chase sequences for action movies and as a script supervisor.
After his experience with Hawks, Kessler directed four first-season episodes of The Monkees in 1966 and helmed the 1968 films Angels From Hell , set in the world of motorcycle gangs, and Killers Three (1968), starring Robert Walker Jr.
He would direct two other movies, The Gay Deceivers (1969) and the Andrew Prine -starring Simon, King of the Witches (1971), as well as several telefilms, including 1977’s Murder in Peyton Place .
The adventurous Kessler and naval architect Steve Seaton helped design the first recreational motor yacht for the company Delta Marine, a 70-foot vessel that Kessler christened Zopilote and launched in 1985.
In 1990, Kessler and Freeman left California aboard Zopilote bound for the South Pacific, a 35,000-mile circumnavigation. When they arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from Europe after the final leg in 1993, Zopilote had become only the sixth powerboat to complete a trip around the world, Baker noted.
Kessler later helped build the Seaton-designed, 64-foot Spirit of Zopilote, which was delivered in 1997. He and his wife lived and cruised on it for the next 27 years. He wound up logging more than 100,000 nautical miles (and 25,000 hours) as captain of his own vessels.
Survivors include his other brother, Rick.

In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.
“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB
Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.
Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.
Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.
A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.
In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.
Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.
With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.
The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.
The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.
Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.
John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.
“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.
Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.
Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.
The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”
“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.
For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.
“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.
She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.
“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”
The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.
Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.
“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”
The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.
In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.
Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”
Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”
Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.
“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.
His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.
The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.
The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.
The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.
“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.
Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
