The History of the Gstaad Yacht Club

yacht club thun

The following winter when Rene and his charming wife Christiane were walking through Gstaad, he was always proudly wearing a jacket with the "Yacht Club de Gstaad" ensign. During a lunch invitation, someone asked him how one could become member of this club. Not quite sure what to answer, later during a relaxed get together at a friend’s house, they decided to create a real club. If they were going to do this, then they would do it right.

They soon arranged the articles of association and the bye-laws and brought together 10 Founding Members at the Olden hotel, which also became the initial "Clubhouse" for all meetings and events. On 28 th February 1998, the Gstaad Yacht Club was founded. George Nicholson was elected Commodore and the Founders pledged to support this Club. About six months later, H.M. King Constantine kindly accepted to become Patron of the Gstaad Yacht Club, who since then has become much more than just a Patron; a friend and ambassador.

In December of the same year, the first event was held. Each Founding Member was asked to invite 10 possible new members for a reception at the Olden. To mark the occasion, an Olympic Star boat was settled in the middle of Gstaad’s promenade, soon covered in snow, the Founding Members braved the cold temperatures to pose for an official photo. During the cocktail the Club was presented, and guests were invited to join. The reception was a big success – the objective to find at least 50 new members, to establish the foundations of the club was met – the starting point to think about the next steps: One of own a clubhouse.

The number of members was growing each year, including very prominent Honorary Members who kindly accepted the invitation of the GYC’s Patron. The board started to hear wonderful stories of members meeting in different corners of the world. The GYC burgee could be seen in some of the most prominent places. Somehow the GYC started to belong to the scenery.

The first sailing event took place in Monaco at the invitation of the Yacht Club de Monaco. The GYC assembled a talented team of sailors, who gave their best, including some broken ribs and sore heads. This event, und many that followed, created a special relationship with the Yacht Club de Monaco. A Protégé programme, which supports Saanenland youngsters interested in learning to sail, was subsequently established with the Yacht Club de Monaco.

In February 2000, the GYC finally held its first sport event. With the help und participation from the Eagle Ski Club the GYC invited the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Royal Yacht Squadron for the Ski Yachting event. Ski races in the afternoon were followed by remote controlled carbon fibre America's Cup boat match racing in the indoor swimming pool. Wind came from specially arranged large fans. The boats were organized with the kind help of James Grey.

The GYC had also special relationship with the Swiss, e.g. the Thunersee Yacht Club, located only some 40 minutes from Gstaad. For many years they jointly organized the Gstaad Yacht Club Challenge for 5.5m, Star boats and Dragons - a team event based on individual regatta races. In 2003, the GYC proudly sponsored and co-organized the Scandinavian Gold Cup, one of the oldest sailing trophies in the world, and the International Swiss Championship with some 40 5.5m boats from 12 nations to the beautiful Lake Thun.

These events brought a new dynamic and perspective to the Gstaad Yacht Club. What the GYC could offer in the winter in the mountains (away from the water), friends in yacht clubs (by the water) could reciprocate in the summer.

After the Yacht Club de Monaco, invitations followed from the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Royal Thames Yacht Club and later one from several of the 36 reciprocal clubs. The GYC and its members very much enjoyed visiting friends and always looks forward to returning.

At the same time, planning for our own Clubhouse continued until in the Fall 2001, GYC member Thomas Straumann approached the board, and his sailing friend, Rear Commodore Peter Erzberger, with a new solution. Through his acquisition of the Bellevue, the GYC was given the opportunity to integrate its clubhouse ideas into his vision for a luxurious, five-star hotel, wellness, and conference centre right in the middle of Gstaad. This ideal solution was carefully planned, presented, and approved and created a new wave of interest in the club. Many spouses, partners and juniors decided to join and so, by the end of 2003, on the exact day of the GYC's fifth anniversary, and a couple of days before GYC member Ernesto Bertarelli and Team Alinghi won the America's Cup, the GYC celebrated the completion of the outer structure of the Gstaad Yacht Club clubhouse.

In sport also on track.

The Centenary Trophy has a very different original idea.

yacht club thun

And once more: where's a will there's a way. Together with other clubs or class associations, the GYC searches and finds the ways to achieve its goals. Since 2014 each year in cooperation with the national Optimist class a team is formed from the best Swiss Opti sailors to take part in the International Club Team Race regatta, organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in the end of January. Four consecutive years of victory and a silver medal in 2018 the GYC team is motivated and focused on the next edition.

As the club from the landlocked country the GYC tries to diversify its water activities as much as possible. Under this objective the club participated in the first LITTLECUP organised in Switzerland. In September 2015, the GYC team comprised of Billy Besson and Matthieu Vandame, GYC Sport Members sailed the C Class Catamaran. We felt privileged to have been able to participate in its first large test of an international challenge on home water.

In 2017 the GYC in collaboration with the Classic Boat Magazine brought an award for the Centenarian of the Year to life. The new award ties in with the centenarian theme and seeks to recognise yachts of this vintage that have achieved something special.

Today the GYC’s sincere thanks go to everybody who has contributed so much personal time, effort, and money to this club. With their support one has created a unique club that we will all be able to enjoy for many years to come.

The sailing and yachting season do not normally clash which has always resulted in a lot of sailors skiing in the winter. At the GYC, we come to realize just how much synergy there is between the mountains and the sea. Who would have thought that one could turn the vision into reality in such a short period of time? Welcome to the future of the Gstaad Yacht CIub.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2023

law connect yacht wiki

Last year, LawConnect finished second over the line to Black Jack . In 2019, when known as InfoTrack , she caused a sensation with her brilliant second over the line; 44 minutes 18 seconds astern of Comanche after a five-way 100-footer battle to Hobart. She finished fourth over the line in 2018 as InfoTrack , after a protracted battle with the rest in conditions not suited to her heavy weight. With a larger bowsprit to enhance performance, she took 2021 Cabbage Tree Island Race Line Honours. Beck bought the former Speedboat/Rambler/Perpetual Loyal from Anthony Bell in 2017, renamed her InfoTrack and finished fourth on line in the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart (but an infringement dropped her to 24 th ), inside the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart record set by this yacht.

Despite a few bumps along the way, this boat continues to defy her critics. When owned by Bell, it retired from the 2014 and 2015 Rolex Sydney Hobarts after finishing second on line in 2013. Beck continues the tradition of taking a few employees along for their first taste of the race, an unbelievable opportunity for these non-sailors.

It was fourth time lucky for LawConnect's Kiwi skipper Christian Beck as his supermaxi reined in Andoo Comanche over the final approach to claim line honours in the 78th running of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race by 51 seconds on Thursday.

The two big yachts had run neck-and-neck at the front of the fleet of more 100 boats over 628 nautical miles (1163 km) from Sydney harbour to Tasmania's main southern port.

LawConnect, which last won the race under the name Perpetual Loyal in 2016, had finished runner-up in line honours for the last three runnings of the bluewater classic, last year behind Comanche.

Thousands of spectators gathered at Hobart's Constitution Dock to watch one of the closest finishes in the long history of Australia's most prestigious ocean race.

"I can't believe that result, I never thought it was possible," Beck told reporters at the quay.

"We thought we'd definitely lost it 15 minutes before because they were three miles ahead ... (but) wind gusts came in, it was a complete surprise."

Stormy weather had made conditions tough and the winning time was one day, 19 hours, 3 minutes and 58 seconds, well outside the record of one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds set by Comanche in 2017.

More from Newshub

Most of the rest of the fleet remains in the sometimes volatile Bass Strait, which separates the mainland from the island state of Tasmania, and the winner of the overall handicap title might not be known for several days.

Eleven boats have retired from the race but there have been no fatalities, a reflection of improved safety standards since six sailors were killed when a major storm hit the fleet during the 1998 running of the race.

Lawconnect skipper’s son reveals he called the boat a ‘s***box’ the night before it won sydney to hobart.

Caleb Taylor

The son of LawConnect’s skipper admitted he called the yacht a ‘s***box’ the night before it won against the world’s fastest superyacht Andoo Comanche in this year’s Sydney to Hobart.

Indy Beck, son of LawConnect’s Christian Beck, admitted he didn’t think his dad would get over the line first in the globally famous yacht race.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Watch LawConnect win The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

“I thought it was (over and) done for us — I don’t believe it to be honest,” Indy told Sunrise’s Annie Pullar on Thursday.

“It’s like, the greatest comeback in sailing, I reckon.

“It was absolutely amazing.”

Annie mentioned she bumped into Indy at a Hobart pub on Wednesday, and he was less than thrilled over the performance of the yacht before the win.

“I ran into you yesterday, what did you call the boat?” Annie asked.

“It’s a s***box,” Indy answered, smiling sheepishly.

Indy admitted he has since changed his mind about the yacht, following the sensational win.

“(It’s) amazing. I still can’t believe it — especially the win on a boat like that,” he said.

LawConnect had a torn sail, which he believed might have helped the team coming into the Derwent River.

LawConnect beat Andoo Comanche by nine seconds — the second-closest time in the race’s history — with the two yachts neck-and-neck.

Andoo Comanche is known as the fastest super-maxi in the world.

Sunrise star Mark Beretta couldn’t contain his excitement over the win.

“This is incredible — LawConnect have done it,” Mark said, beaming.

“Christian Beck, fourth-time lucky — three-times they’ve been runner-up in this race.

“This is just remarkable. What a finish. Unbelievable.”

Mark also spoke about the historic nature of the win.

“One of the closest finishes in Sydney to Hobart history,” he said.

“Comanche, which is regarded as the fastest supermaxi in the world, has been beaten in the Sydney-Hobart.

“That is a massive result - a great effort from the team on LawConnect.”

LawConnect moves ahead of Andoo Comanche on the River Derwent

LawConnect wins Sydney to Hobart line honours after tight finish with Andoo Comanche

  • Supermaxis tussle for lead in final moments on River Derwent
  • LawConnect overtakes Comanche to win by 51 seconds

Perennial bridesmaid LawConnect has claimed Sydney to Hobart line honours, coming from behind to pip fellow supermaxi Andoo Comanche by just 51 seconds.

LawConnect, runner-up in the past three events, edged across the River Derwent finish line in light winds shortly after 8am (AEDT) on Thursday.

It was the second-closest finish in Sydney to Hobart history after Condor of Bermuda beat Apollo by seven seconds in 1982.

Aerial view of LawConnect and Andoo Comanche near the finish line in Hobart surrounded by spectator boats

LawConnect and Comanche, who were in a tight battle the whole race, each had their nose in front in the dying stages.

Skipper and owner Christian Beck said his maiden line honours win in the 628-nautical-mile blue-water event was a dream come true.

“They took the lead pretty close to the line and we thought there was no way we could get it back,” Beck said.

“A wind gust came around. It was a complete surprise. There were guys who couldn’t watch. It was very nerve wracking.”

Pre-race favourite and 2022 winner Comanche took a lead into the River Derwent after holding the advantage down Tasmania’s east coast on Wednesday night.

“It is pretty painful,” Comanche skipper and owner John Winning Jr said.

“We’ve got an amazing boat that should have won. The other guys sailed their guts out and left nothing on the table.

“They beat us with an underdog boat, those guys deserve all the praise they get.”

Winning, whose two-year ownership of Comanche will come to an end after this race, lamented a slow start and getting caught in unexpected low pressure.

“It was one of the most epic finishes in probably any sailing race I know,” he said.

“In the last three minutes I think the lead changed three times.”

The LawConnect crew come into dock

Beck, who said he would return to defend the win, jokingly described LawConnect as a “shitbox” compared to Comanche.

“I know it looks good on TV but you go up close … she’s rough as anything,” he said.

“Comanche is better in every way. The fact [our crew] can make that boat beat Comanche is amazing.”

LawConnect arrived in Hobart with a red protest flag flying after they slowed for 30 minutes for Comanche who they believed was in distress.

Crew of LawConnect celebrate their first win.

LawConnect sailing master Tony Mutter said they didn’t assert any wrongdoing on Comanche’s part, with the winners finishing in one day, 19 hours, three minutes and 58 seconds.

She was first out of the Heads in Sydney during a dramatic opening day which included the retirement of fellow supermaxi SHK Scallywag because of a broken bow sprit.

Eleven of the race’s starting 103-strong fleet have pulled the pin, with some reporting damage and seasickness after a challenging thunderstorm on the first night.

Moneypenny, URM Group and Alive are together about 60 nautical miles from the finish, with the third remaining supermaxi Wild Thing 100 further back in sixth.

LawConnect Wins 2023 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Lawconnect overtook andoo comanche in the final moments to win the sydney hobart yacht race..

Christian Beck’s LawConnect claimed line honors at 8:03 a.m. on Thursday, December 28 after sailing for one day, 19 hours, three minutes, and 58 seconds. Reigning champion Andoo Comanche held the upper hand for most of the 628 nautical mile race, but ultimately fell short.

Only 51 seconds separated LawConnect and Andoo Comanche at the end, making it the second closest finish the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has ever seen. Condor beating Apollo over the line by seven seconds in 1982 marks the closest.

While LawConnect and Andoo Comanche were battling for first, there was a close finish for third place, too. URM Group , Alive , and Moneypenny spent most of the race in a tight match, but URM Group jumped away on Thursday, finishing in third. URM Group finished with a time of two days, two hours, seven minutes, and 19 seconds, followed by Alive and then Moneypenny .

EXCLUSIVE: 'Horrifying' Sydney to Hobart fear confronting rookie after lucky dip win

Zachary Gates WWOS Journalist

When more than 100 yachts begin the journey from Sydney Harbour to Hobart on Monday afternoon, aboard one of the boats will be a crew member who until November had no sailing experience and remains too scared to swim in deep ocean water.

Payal Pattanaik, a 31-year-old software engineer who emigrated from India to Australia in 2020, will sail with LawConnect — one of four 100-foot super maxis entered in the iconic race — after coming up trumps in a lucky dip.

Pattanaik is one of 20 LawConnect crew members set to sail approximately 1163 kilometres in the 77th edition of the race, potentially navigating huge waves, gusty winds and wild storms.

"I think it will really be a very challenging experience because I've never seen big waves," Pattanaik told Wide World of Sports.

"When we were having our training period we didn't see very big waves; only light waves.

"So I really don't know how it will be exactly with the big waves like you see in the movies. So I'm really afraid of that. I don't know how I will react to that.

"Let's see how it goes.

"I definitely don't want to experience a storm during the race; I think that would be horrifying."

Pattanaik was introduced to sailing as LawConnect trained for the Sydney to Hobart race for about two weeks across November and December.

She had never participated in any adventure sport, rather volleyball and basketball.

"I have a fear of the ocean ... because when I see high tides or high waves I freak out," Pattanaik said.

"So I've never been for a swim in the ocean because if I can't see the horizon, or there are big waves in front of me, I panic. I panic a lot.

"I have to overcome that fear, for sure, and that's why I want to challenge myself."

law connect yacht wiki

North-easterly winds forecast to pick up over Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to favour the super maxis: LawConnect, the Andoo Comanche, Black Jack and Hamilton Island Wild Oats.

The biggest boats in the race are tipped to hurtle down the east coast of Australia and threaten the record.

The benchmark is one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds — a time posted in 2017 by LDV Comanche, now known as Andoo Comanche.

Pattanaik is tasked with capturing video for LawConnect's live stream and being a "helping hand".

She offers a stirring perspective.

"I think I should encourage people. If I can do it, anyone can do it," Pattanaik said.

"It's really good for your mental health because it boosts your confidence and you come out stronger.

"So, that's why I want to try.

"These things are very overwhelming, really, and I never thought about experiencing this in my life.

"You are getting paid for everything. You just have to be there, and you get to experience this amazing journey, so I think it's really great to have an opportunity like this."

‘Complete surprise’: LawConnect owner celebrates Sydney to Hobart line honours win

LawConnect owner and skipper Christian Beck says his team’s line honours win in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race was a “complete surprise”.

'LawConnect' crossed the finish line just after 8:00am on Thursday after being neck and neck up the Derwent River with Comanche.

“They took the lead pretty close to the line – we thought there was no way we could get it back,” Mr Beck said.

“We thought we’d definitely lost it 15 minutes before because they were three miles ahead of us.”

Wild weather saw 11 yachts retire from the race.

A unanimous Supreme Court restores Trump to the Colorado ballot

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled to restore former President Donald Trump to Colorado's ballot.

The U.S. Supreme Court restored Republican front-runner Donald Trump to the Colorado primary ballot, ruling that the state lacked authority to disqualify him after his actions three years ago during the siege on the U.S. Capitol.

The unanimous decision came only weeks after the justices heard oral arguments in the politically sensitive case that put the high court in the middle of the 2024 presidential election. And it comes a week after the court said it would hear arguments in a case that seeks to answer whether Trump enjoys broad immunity for his actions on Jan. 6.

Supreme Court justices appear skeptical of effort to remove Trump from a state ballot

Supreme Court justices appear skeptical of effort to remove Trump from a state ballot

In a post on Truth, his social media platform, Trump called the opinion a "BIG WIN FOR AMERICA!!!" In remarks from his Florida resort a short time later, the former president said the high court decision "will go a long way in bringing our country together."

Six Colorado voters argued that Trump had run afoul of a post-Civil War law that bars people who took an oath to support the Constitution from engaging in an insurrection or rebellion. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment has never been used against a presidential candidate, and it's only been deployed eight times since the 1860s.

That sparse record contributed to the high court's decision Monday .

"Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse," the court decision concluded.

The ruling made clear that lawmakers after the Civil War intended the 14th Amendment to expand federal power, at the expense of the states, and that the Constitution "empowers Congress" to determine how to use the "severe" penalty of disqualification.

While the justices came together to agree Trump could not be removed from the Colorado ballot, they differed as to how far they would go.

The three liberal-leaning justices, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, wrote to criticize the majority for deciding "momentous and difficult issues unnecessarily."

Those justices said the majority overreached when it set out ways Section 3 of the 14th Amendment should be enforced, basically creating what they called "a special rule for the insurrection disability."

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who was appointed by Trump, wrote separately to say the court did not need to address "the complicated question whether federal legislation is the exclusive vehicle" to enforce the insurrection clause.

"The majority's choice of a different path leaves the remaining justices with a choice of how to respond," she wrote. "In my judgment this is not the time to amplify disagreement with stridency."

Barrett continued: "The Court has settled a politically charged issue in the volatile season of a Presidential election. Particularly in this circumstance, writings on the Court should turn the national temperature down, not up."

The ultimate ruling is not much of a surprise following oral argument. Jason Murray, the lawyer for the voters, ran into rough territory at the Supreme Court, where justices across the ideological spectrum tossed difficult questions his way.

"What about the idea that we should think about democracy?" asked Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who was appointed by Trump. "Because your position has the effect of disenfranchising voters to a significant degree."

"I think the question that you have to confront is why a single state should decide who gets to be president of the United States," said Kagan, an Obama appointee.

Chief Justice John Roberts said he could foresee, in the not-too-distant future, a world in which some states would try to boot the Democratic nominee from the ballot, and others would use Section 3 to do the same for the Republican candidate.

"It will come down to just a handful of states that are going to decide the presidential election," Roberts said. "That's a pretty daunting consequence."

The case has been closely watched by legal experts and election administrators across the nation. Many of them had filed friend-of-the-court briefs asking the justices to rule swiftly, and decisively, before millions more American voters head to the polls.

Janai Nelson, president of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, said the court majority had ignored the plain text of the 14th Amendment, effectively giving "constitutional immunity to insurrectionists, absent legislation from Congress."

The question about Trump's disqualification in Colorado has been playing out in different ways in dozens of other states. Maine's secretary of state found that Trump is disqualified from appearing on Maine's primary ballot, but the decision was stayed pending Trump's appeal. A judge in Illinois also barred Trump but paused her ruling pending action from the Supreme Court.

Derek Muller, an election law professor at Notre Dame, said in a statement the Supreme Court decision today "shuts the door on any exclusion of Trump from the ballot in any state, either in the primary or the general."

Jonathan Mitchell, a lawyer for Trump, made a series of arguments to keep the former president on the ballot. Among them: Trump is not covered by that part of the Constitution because he took a different oath of office, and that Congress would need to act, and answer key questions about disqualification, before any candidate could be removed from the ballot.

But Murray, the lawyer for the Colorado voters, pushed back at that idea.

"Those who drafted Section 3 of the 14th Amendment back in the 1860s were very clear that they understood this provision not just to cover former Confederates but that it would stand as a shield to protect our Constitution for all time going forward, and so this is not some dusty relic," he said.

Noah Bookbinder, the president of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a nonprofit group that backed the legal challenge to Trump, pointed out the Supreme Court did not erase fact-finding by judges in Colorado that Trump had engaged in an "insurrection."

"Every court–or decision-making body–that has substantively examined the issue has determined that January 6th was an insurrection and that Donald Trump incited it," Bookbinder said. "That remains true today."

In his remarks at his Mar a Lago resort Monday, Trump accused President Biden – without offering any evidence – of weaponizing the Justice Department against him. The two men are likely to face off in the November presidential election.

"Fight your fight yourself," Trump said. "Don't use prosecutors and judges to go after your opponent."

There is no evidence – none – that the White House is coordinating with prosecutors who are targeting Trump. Indeed, the U.S. Justice Department operates independently of the White House.

73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

PETER DUNCAN AND RELATIVE OBSCURITY WIN THE 2021 J/70 WORLDS

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

Two firefighters injured fighting a massive overnight fire that destroyed

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

The three towers that make up the Marina City Club

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

Boats on the water with palm trees in the background

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.
