A Fiji court on Tuesday ordered the seizure of a superyacht reportedly owned by a Russian oligarch who is under sanctions, officials have said.

A restraining order filed last month by the Pacific island nation's director of public prosecutions revealed the US's intention to seize the vessel.

The yacht Amadea arrived in Fiji early last month, after leaving Mexico and crossing the Pacific.

It is estimated to be worth more than $300 million and has been linked in some reports to Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, a target of US and European Union sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Several yacht-tracking sites list Mr Kerimov as the owner but this could not be independently confirmed.

The court in the Pacific island's capital Suva “has granted the order to seize the superyacht Amadea ” after a US warrant for its seizure was filed last month, Fiji's director of public prosecutions said in a statement.

The court had already ruled on April 19 that Fijian authorities could block the vessel from leaving the country's territorial waters while awaiting a decision on the US warrant.

The 107-metre superyacht has a pool, Jacuzzi, helipad and “winter garden” on the sun deck, the website superyachtfan.com says.

A superyacht agent in Fiji acting for the Amadea told Reuters the vessel's lawyers were contesting that Mr Kerimov was the owner.

Registration records viewed by Reuters show the yacht is registered to a company in the Cayman Islands.

Mr Kerimov was sanctioned by the US in 2014 and 2018 in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine and Syria.

Authorities in various countries have seized luxury vessels and villas owned by Russian billionaires in response to sanctions imposed over the invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a special military operation.

Seized Russian-owned yacht Amadea finally sets sail from Fiji under U.S. control

By Graham Kates

Updated on: June 7, 2022 / 11:44 AM EDT / CBS News

The Amadea, a Russian-owned superyacht, set sail from Fiji Tuesday bearing a U.S. flag, ending weeks of legal and administrative hurdles that had stalled American efforts to seize the $300 million vessel it says is owned by a sanctioned oligarch.

U.S. Justice Department officials had been stymied by a frenzied legal effort by the Amadea's owner to contest the American seizure warrant, and a yacht crew that refused to sail for the U.S.

Fiji's Supreme Court ultimately weighed in Tuesday, clearing the U.S. to take the 348-foot ship.  The Amadea boasts luxury features such as a helipad, a mosaic-tiled pool, a lobster tank and a pizza oven, nestled in a décor of "delicate marble and stones" and "precious woods and delicate silk fabrics," according to court documents.

The ship was targeted by the Justice Department's Kleptocapture task force, a team devoted to seizing the luxury assets of sanctioned Russian oligarchs , as part of U.S. efforts to punish Russia for its deadly war in Ukraine. Legislation supported by President Biden that has passed the House of Representatives, but not the Senate, would allow the U.S. to sell the Amadea and direct the proceeds toward the Ukraine war and recovery effort.

Today, with authorization from the Fijian High Court and under a new flag, the Amadea set sail for the United States after having been seized as the proceeds of criminal evasion of US sanctions against Russian oligarch Suleyman Kerimov. The U.S. claims the Amadea is owned by sanctioned gold mining billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, but a Fijian lawyer for the holding company the ship is registered to has said the U.S. is incorrect.

The lawyer, Feizel Haniff, said the true owner is Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oil executive who was sanctioned by the European Union on June 4 but has not been sanctioned by the U.S. The Amadea is one of at least two massive superyachts — with a combined value of about $1 billion — owned by holding companies tied to Eduard Khudainatov

American officials are dismissive of his claim to the yachts, arguing he's not rich enough to own them. An FBI agent wrote in a warrant that Khudainatov is "a second-tier oligarch (at best) who would not have anywhere near the resources to purchase and maintain more than $1 billion worth of luxury yachts."

U.S. officials claim in court documents that Khudainatov is a "straw man" for the sanctioned Russian elite who really own the yachts.

Haniff declined to comment on Fiji's decision Tuesday to end the legal saga that began in April , when U.S. officials accompanied Fijian police in boarding the ship to interview crew and pore through records on the ship's computers.

Those same police would later escort U.S. officials off the ship after they boarded on the morning of May 7 and demanded the captain "immediately handover the Amadea with all available key personnel," according to a sworn affidavit by the captain, filed in Fiji court.

The day before, a Fiji court had effectively frozen the ship in place, issuing a stay of a previous ruling authorizing the U.S. to take it.

But even without that stay, the U.S. faced an unexpected hurdle. The crew, whose pay had already been frozen due to sanctions, were "refusing to sail on the Amadea with the U.S. authorities to an unknown destination," the captain wrote in his affidavit. He added that they feared cooperating with the U.S., in breach of their contracts with the ship's owner, would damage their reputations in the yachting industry.

By the end of May, contractors for the U.S. had hired a new crew of 24, led by a captain who had previously been at the helm of the Amadea.

On Tuesday, Fiji's Supreme Court ruled that the ship needed to be turned over to the U.S. in order for Fiji to comply with the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.

Fiji's top prosecutor said in a statement to media organizations that "the court accepted the validity of the US warrant and agreed that issues concerning money laundering and ownership need to be decided in the court of original jurisdiction," in this case, the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

Lurssen superyacht Amadea

Amadea: 10 facts about Lürssen's 106m superyacht

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Amadea , the 106m behemoth from German shipyard Lürssen , was delivered in 2017 and measures an impressive 106 metres LOA. Evgeniy Kochman, founder and CEO of broker Imperial which acted as the owner’s representative during the construction process, has described Amadea as “one of the most detailed vessels ever built.”  With an ornate design by Espen Øino International and interiors by Francois Zuretti , Amadea boasts impressive attention to detail. BOAT discovers some of the most unique features on board...

1. The private cinema offers a 4D experience

A private cinema is located on the bridge deck, with movies shown via a full retractable projector and big screen and complemented by a popcorn machine. To make the experience even more immersive, the sofas are controlled by D-Box motion control, and can move forwards, tilt backwards and shake in sequence with the films shown on screen.

2. A five-tonne albatross adorns the bow

Weighing as much as five tonnes and constructed entirely from stainless steel, an enormous albatross figurehead has been welded to the front of the yacht, with its vast wings wrapped around the bow. The piece was created by Dutch artist Willem Lenssinck and designed in an art-deco style.

3. There’s a live lobster tank in the galley

The galley on the top deck has a live lobster tank so foodies can enjoy the freshest seafood grilled over the giant barbecue. The area has also been designed in an open, chef’s table style so guests can be involved in food prep.

4. Live bands can entertain on the party deck

The party deck has the ultimate entertainment set-up. The spa pool and sunbeds can convert into a live stage with 20,000 Watts of built-in speakers, stage lights and laser beams. Bands and DJs can plug directly into the ship’s audio system for optimum sound quality. Even at half volume, "you could feel your chest pounding," according to the captain.

5. A starry night sky fresco overlooks the owner’s private pool

The owner’s cabin has a private terrace complete with a mosaic-lined spa pool. Overhead, a fresco of the night sky with the Zodiac constellations is lit up by 2,000 fibre-optic cables and a spinning disk that creates a twinkling starlight effect.

6. There are 6,500 electronic devices on board

Everything on board, from the entertainment to the curtain and blind controls, is controlled by iPads. In fact, there are more than 6,500 electronic devices throughout the interior.

7. The helipad has some extra special features

For smooth arrivals and departures, Amadea is equipped with a helipad that can accommodate a craft of up to 3.5-tonnes, specifically an Agusta 109 or an EC135. But, going far beyond class requirement, the landing area also features a glide path indicator which resembles a dormant party light on the foredeck.

8. A hand-painted Pleyel piano decorates the main saloon

Once the favoured piano brand of Chopin and Ravel, Peyel was responsible for the Directoire baby grand piano that decorates Amadea’s interior. The soundboard and ribs of the piano are built of solid spruce from Italy’s Fiemme Valley and the hardware, including pedals and hinges, are made from 24kt gold. The vines and flowers adorning the instrument are hand-painted by Pierre-François Battisti, and the piano in total took 18 months to construct.

9. There's plenty of equipment for a beach party

If guests want to stretch their sea legs on shore, Amadea is equipped with a crane that can lower the on board hog-roaster to the ground for a beach party feast. Other items tucked away in storage include a limo tender, a Pascoe beach lander and a cabrio sports boat for bringing guests to the shoreline.

10. Amadea took less than three years to build

Despite the incredible amount of detail that went into Amadea’s design, the build took just 31 months from the first steel cutting until delivery to her owner. For a yacht of her size, “that is very fast,” attests Michael Breman, sales director at Lürssen. The build was able to be completed so swiftly thanks to similar technical specifications as a Lürssen project launched in 2014, the 104 metre Quantum Blue .

U.S. Seeks Forfeiture of Russian Oligarch’s Superyacht ‘Amadea’ Docked in San Diego

Superyacht Amadea

The Justice Department on Monday sought the forfeiture of a $300 million superyacht docked in San Diego that is believed to be controlled by billionaire Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov , who is under U.S. sanctions.

Authorities in Fiji seized the 348-foot Amadea pursuant to a U.S. warrant in May 2022 as Washington ramped up sanctions enforcement against people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, to pressure Moscow to halt its war against Ukraine.

Monday’s complaint, filed in federal court in Manhattan, kicks off a potentially long judicial process in which the United States would seek ownership of the yacht, and then likely auction it and transfer proceeds to Ukraine.

Kerimov and his family are worth $10.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

He amassed much of his wealth through a stake in Russian gold producer Polyus. Kerimov was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2014 and 2018 in response to Russia’s activities in Syria and Ukraine. Those sanctions barred Kerimov from accessing the U.S. financial system.

Polyus was sanctioned in May 2023. The company said the sanctions were unfounded.

In Monday’s complaint, the U.S. Department of Justice said Kerimov bought the Amadea in 2021, and then violated U.S. sanctions by making more than $1 million in maintenance payments through U.S. financial institutions.

The yacht’s owners will have the chance to contest that claim in court.

Kerimov could not immediately be reached for comment.

Lawyers for the Amadea’s owner, Millemarin Investments, told a Fiji court last year that the Amadea was owned not by Kerimov but by former Rosneft chief Eduard Khudainatov, a Russian oligarch who has not been sanctioned.

Khudainatov is not named in Monday’s complaint.

U.S. prosecutors said a Sept. 14, 2021, transaction transferring ownership of the Amadea from Millemarin to a newly incorporated company, Errigan Marine, was designed to make it appear that Evgeny Kochman, the president of sanctioned yacht broker Imperial Yachts, owned the yacht.

Prosecutors said Kochman was, in fact, only a “straw owner.”

Khudainatov sued the United States on Monday in federal court in San Diego to release the yacht, according to a copy of the complaint provided by his lawyer, Adam Ford. Reuters could not immediately locate the legal papers online.

“The Amadea was seized upon false premises driven by political motivation,” Ford said in a statement.

US spends more than $7m a year to keep up superyacht seized from Russian oligarch

Government efforts to auction Amadea, vessel allegedly owned by Suleiman Kerimov, challenged by ex-head of Russian oil company

The US government has said it is spending more than $7m a year to maintain a superyacht it seized from a sanctioned Russian oligarch , and urged a judge to let it auction the vessel before a dispute over its ownership is resolved.

Authorities in Fiji seized the 348ft (106-meter), $300m Amadea in May 2022, pursuant to a US warrant alleging it was owned by Suleiman Kerimov , a multibillionaire sanctioned by the US treasury department in 2014 and 2018 in response to Russia’s activities in Syria and Ukraine.

Efforts to auction the yacht are being challenged by Eduard Khudainatov, who led Russian state oil and gas company Rosneft from 2010 to 2013.

Khudainatov claims ownership of the Amadea, and has said it cannot not be forfeited because he has not been sanctioned.

In a court filing late on Friday federal prosecutors in Manhattan told the US district judge Dale Ho that the $600,000 average monthly maintenance bill for the Amadea has been “excessive”, justifying an auction. They also said talks to have Khudainatov pay for the yacht’s upkeep have broken down.

Prosecutors have said in previous court filings that Khudainatov is acting as the Amadea’s “straw owner” to disguise Kerimov’s role, and that maintenance payments are essential to preserving a yacht’s value.

Khudainatov has until 23 February to reply to prosecutors’ request. In a statement, his lawyers said the motion to sell the vessel was “premature” and urged Ho to deny it until he “determines whether the seizure was unconstitutional”.

The seizure came as Washington ramped up sanctions enforcement against people close to Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, to pressure Moscow to halt its war against Ukraine.

If the US government succeeded in auctioning the yacht, it would likely eventually transfer sale proceeds to Ukraine.

Prosecutors have said Kerimov violated US sanctions by making more than $1m in maintenance payments for the Amadea through the US financial system, making the vessel now docked in San Diego subject to forfeiture.

Kerimov and his family are worth $10.7bn, according to Forbes magazine. He amassed his fortune through Russian gold miner Polyus, though he is no longer a shareholder.

106m Amadea Soars to the Middle East Market

By George Bains

Bigger and better than ever. That is what we can expect from the upcoming Dubai International Boat Show and Qatar International Boat Show as Imperial announces the presence of 106m Lurssen Amadea at both events.

Amadea will become the largest ever yacht to have been displayed at either event, demonstrating the increased appeal of the Middle East as a superyacht destination as well as the ambitions of the shows to compete with the well-established European shows.

Built by German shipbuilding giant Lurssen and delivered in 2017, Amadea has earned her place amongst the most revered superyachts on the waters. Her design is fruit of a powerhouse collaboration between Espen Oeino and Francois Zuretti, two esteemed names in the industry. The result is a sophisticated, elaborate and complex superyacht that is instantly recognisable for her unique features. Espen’s ultra-sleek exterior features hosts a 10-metre length pool that overflows into the azure blue sea. Amadea sleeps 16 guests across her six decks in an airy and luxury interior courtesy of Zuretti. In addition to being a statement of pure opulence, Amadea was designed with family at the centre and among her exciting amenities is a home cinema, massage room and sauna.

“Amadea is a symbol of power and a testimonial of Imperial’s savoir-faire in the superyacht industry ,” stated Julia Stewart, Imperial Director. Imperial acted as the Owner’s representative and Build Supervisor during the construction period, and the superyacht will be available to view exclusively through Imperial in the Middle East.

“Being available in the Middle East for a selected clientele of connoisseurs and being among the first to explore the region with a vessel of this size available for sale represent a fantastic opportunity for our company. We look forward to realize some great achievements, ” continued Stewart.

Eric Lepeingle, Imperial’s Head of Sales & Charter, added that “Amadea is the epitome of luxury, a living legend and the perfect symphony between attention to detail and utmost comfort at every level. She is ready to immediately welcome her new passionate owner .”

The first to kick off will be the Dubai International Boat from 10th to 14th March, where Amadea will be displayed at Berth MD-01 as the pinnacle of the show. The 106-metre superyacht will then head to the Qatar International Boat Show where she will be exhibited at V1-V2 from 18th March.

"Amadea is the epitome of luxury, a living legend and the perfect symphony between attention to detail and utmost comfort at every level." Eric Lepeingle, Head of Sales and Charter Imperial

The United States government is spending nearly $US1 million ($1.5 million) a month to maintain a luxury superyacht seized from a Russian oligarch under sanctions to pressure the Kremlin over the Ukraine war.

The 106-metre long Amadea was one of the first trophies US prosecutors claimed as part of a task force effort to hold Russians friendly to the Kremlin accountable.

The super yacht Amadea passes San Diego as it comes into the San Diego Bay Monday, June 27, 2022, seen from Coronado, Calif. The $325 million superyacht seized by the United States from a sanctioned Russian oligarch arrived in San Diego Bay on Monday.

The superyacht was seized while docked in Fiji in 2022 by local law enforcement officials and the FBI.

It followed an extensive legal battle in the Pacific island nation between its owner and authorities.

US prosecutors allege its owner, Suleiman Kerimov, who made his fortune in gold, violated sanctions by using the American banking system to cover expenses for the vessel.

The yacht has been docked in San Diego since its seizure.

Now, US prosecutors have asked a judge for permission to sell the vessel.

They say its expenses are excessive and has cost the government about $US20 million ($30 million), according to recent court filings

The superyacht has many luxury fittings, such as a live lobster tank, a hand-painted piano, a swimming pool and a large helipad.

Assets of wealthy Russians placed on sanctions lists have been seized since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

A recent appraisal values the Amadea at $US230 million ($350 million), according to the US Marshals Service.

"It is 'excessive' for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses, could be reduced to zero through interlocutory sale," prosecutors wrote in a filing earlier this month.

A Russian billionaire Eduard Khudainatov and Millemarin Investments came forward to claim the superyacht.

They oppose the sale and said the judge shouldn't allow it until their motion to dismiss the civil forfeiture complaint is decided.

They told the judge that they've "offered to reimburse the US government for the costs it has incurred for maintaining the Amadea in exchange for its return.

"That offer stands. Maintaining the Amadea is certainly expensive, and Claimants never intended for US taxpayers to shoulder that burden. But the wrongful decision to seize it was made by the government, knowing what the costs to American taxpayers would entail."

But prosecutors said a decision on that motion could take many more months, racking up the bill to maintain the vessel.
