Help identifying parts of a San Juan 23 sailboat
- Add to quote
If y'all would permit me, I run across a few items on our new (first) sailboat I'm unable to identify. Any help would be appreciated. I dunno how to even look these items up! The first on the left is a rail with some sort of a car. I'm assuming it's adjustable, I just can't figure out how to move it or it's purpose. It might just need to be cleaned with some penetrating oil, but what is is for? There one on the port side and another just like it on the starboard side in the same place. The second picture is an aluminum bracket. It's tied to the rail near the motor, looks like it has a purpose. The rope isn't very long so it only reaches the motor. Is it a tool of some sort? The third picture I thought might have a light inside, but I don't see one. It doesn't appear to be a cabin vent which would be silly. I have no idea. Thank you for your time.

Pic #1 is a jib/genoa lead for a turning block.. you need to run your headsail sheets through a block here before winching/cleating the sail. The slider needs to be positioned to match the sail in use. Pic #2 is a mystery, though clearly the bracket doesn't support the weight of the motor, so maybe it's a quick clip to hold the motor up? Pic #3 is probably and anchor rode access to the forepeak.. you stuff your anchor rope and chain down that hole to an area in the bow where it's stored. Good luck!
Pic#1 Thank you sir. That makes perfect sense. I did wonder how the sheet kept from rubbing the cabin, or tangled in the lifeline. The previous owner didn't seem to have a problem without a block here. I'll add a couple more blocks to my shopping cart. I'd like to replace two others that have cracked wheels. Pic#2 Interesting. I'll try to figure out a way to use it to hold up the motor. Pic#3 I'd never guess that. I'll confirm your suspicion. Thank you!
Does a San Juan 23 have a spinnaker pole? If so, pic #3 looks like a spin pole deck shoe (mount) to me. (Unless there is a hole under it, in which case I agree with Faster). ~fortunat Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
OK two out of three taken care of. That key?? Maybe there's a deck fitting close by?
I was about to say the same for pic 3. I was thinking a pocket to hold a spinnaker pole on deck. Can't think of what else it could be at the moment.
If Pic #3 is a spinn pole chock, that makes sense too.. it IS set up the right way, you would put one end of the pole in there to stow it on deck when it's not in use. But there should also be a ring or some such on deck to trap the other end - about 6-7 feet aft of that fitting. Do you have the pole? Is there a track and/or a ring on the front of the mast about 3-5 feet above deck? Could be it was setup to run a spinnaker at some point. Anyhow, if you don't have the rest of the gear for that, you could safely remove it and clean up that area on the deck. What's in the sail bags you got with the boat?
Which brings us to the other unidentified object on the deck, and the track on the forward side of the mast with no apparent purpose. There's a line attached to the ring too. I don't have the pole unfortunately. The boat come with eight sails in great shape and I didn't realize I had a spinnaker until I went back to the original ad I saved from Craig's list. 1 Spinnaker, 2 Mainsails, 1 Working Jig, 1 110% , 2 150% and 1 170% Genoas The sail I pulled off the boat to bring it home looks great. There's another bagged that seems very light, is beautifully colored. The previous owner said it was a "light wind sail" EDIT: OK uh, I have the pole and you don't even want to know what I thought it was used for.... with the y'know, hook on the end and all. <cough> yea. So I have complete spinnaker gear. Thank you all. You've been a big help yet again.
Here's a bunch of images to get you started... https://www.google.ca/search?q=spin...X&ved=0CBsQsARqFQoTCLbv-OOpl8gCFQeViAod_Z0OCQ

That little aluminum doo-hickey by the motor? I'm guessing that the previous owner made that himself, and used it to pull the motor up when it was down. Former SJ 23 owner myself, and I know that reaching down and pulling the motor up by hand was always a bit of a pain. Something like that would probably make it a lot easier. Nice boat. Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks! I don't see how it's used on the motor yet, but I'll look again. It's either a really bad beer bottle opener or it goes to the motor. It doesn't untie easily, so the only thing it'll reach IS the motor.
#3 is a spinnaker or whisker pole chock like device. I use the same thing on one of my boats, but on the opposite end of the pole, there is a typical deck chock to lock in the other spring loaded end.
My guess for #2 would be to hold your outboard up or keep it pointed straight.

The San Juan 24
A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.
While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

SJ24, more than just a racer?

There are a couple of SJ24's for sale in my area. My son really wants to race but the wife and I like gunkholing. Is this boat capable of decent short term cruising (2-5 nights). I have also read reviews suggesting these boats may be a little unstable. This would be my second boat (first was a Hunter 27).
The SJ24 is a decent boat, if lightly built. It's is quick for its size, and gets its reputation for tippiness from its propensity to roll when going downwind under spinnaker. This trait is very common in IOR boats of the period. Upwind it's fine. The interior is small for its size dues to its racing designs, and is one big open space. You would be very cozy for a weeks trip. BWY, that is not a 'short cruise', it's probably longer than 90% of longest durations most have been way from the dock!
I'm also looking at a couple Catalina 22's. Maybe that would fit better and racing will be more beer can than serious anyway.

I currently own a 1982 San Juan 23. I've sailed on the SJ24 and really prefer the SJ23. I owned a C22 for 4 years and sailed it hard and long. We camped up to a week in it with the pop-up canvas. I found it a royal pain to set that up each night. The C22 is a real thrill to sail if you know what you are doing. My SJ23 has been modified and has an enclosed marine head. It has all the late model improvements and is a much better boat for gunk-holing than the C22 or SJ24. The SJ23 is quite fast on all points of sail and carries a std or asy spinnaker nicely if you pay attention to what you are doing. I have also owned a H26 which surpassed all other trailer sailed boats for cabin layout and creature comfort but is a water ballasted boat. Nothing wrong with that if you are not planning to do much racing. For just the wife and I gunk holing and laid back sailing I'd go for a H26 in top condition. More money, but a better answer for quiet weekends. Ray

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
