RYA Advanced Powerboat Exam

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA's Powerboat Logbook (code G20) available from the webshop.

Boats used for exams

You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.

The vessel must be capable of a minimum of 12 knots, equipped with the following:

• lights conforming with IRPCS
• VHF radio (may be portable)
• GPS (may be hand held) or plotter
• depth sounder
• anchor, chain and warp
• basic tool kit and spares
• heaving line
• paddles or additional means of propulsion
• flares: 2 hand held, 2 orange smoke
• bilge pump or buckets/bailer
• first aid kit

Additionally if not on the boat, you will need to bring to the exam:

• laminated or waterproof charts
• GPS set (may be hand held)
• tide tables
• pilotage information for the local area, eg pilot books, port information etc
• plotting instruments.
• Photographic ID card or document, such as a passport or driving licence

Advanced Powerboat exam pre-requisites

Before you book your exam please check that you:

• can provide a boat
• have completed the required mileage and experience as skipper
• hold a VHF Radio Operators License or Short Range Certificate
• hold a valid first aid certificate
• have read the syllabus in RYA publication G20
• have read and comply with the pre-requisites above.

Candidates should be familiar with all the equipment on board the vessel, as they may be asked to use this during the examination.

If you need your Certificate of Competence in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed .

RYA Power Boat Level 2

This course suits those new to boating who want to develop the base skills as well as those who have boated for a while but who want to ensure they are approaching their boating the right way.

RYA Power Boat Intermediate

Thi course is aimed at those who have boated a season or more, probably already have Level 2 and want to learn more about coastal cruising.

RYA Power Boat Advanced

Aimed at experienced leisure boaters and those seeking to work commercially. The Advanced Course can be followed by the Advanced Examination.

RYA Power Boat Advanced CoC Exam Prep

This will vary from person to person, but it is easy to underestimate the level that you need to be at for the Advanced Examination.

RYA Superyacht Tender Operator

Aimed at those already working as a tender driver transferring guests/passengers in sectors such as the superyacht world or in other environments where you may need to transfer guests and passengers.

No prior experience is necessary to enrol in an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course. This course is designed for beginners and covers basic boat handling and safety skills.

Participants are typically required to bring appropriate clothing for boating, including a waterproof jacket and trousers, suitable footwear with non-slip soles although clothing is dependant on weather.

Yes, RYA Powerboat certificates are internationally recognized and accepted by maritime authorities and charter companies worldwide. The RYA is a leading authority in boating education, and its certifications are highly respected within the maritime industry.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses typically last two days. During this time, participants will receive both theoretical knowledge and practical training in boat handling, safety procedures, and navigation.

Standard Returns

If you are not entirely happy with your purchase, we will exchange or refund your goods in full, provided that the items are returned within 14 days of receipt.*

Please check the condition of goods on arrival - we are unable to accept goods damaged during shipping after 14 days.

Returned goods must be packaged securely, with all original packaging undamaged and in a saleable condition i.e. shoe boxes must be in the same condition as when received.

Goods must be unused and security seals intact.*

If you would like to return goods because they were ordered incorrectly or if clothing does not fit, return postage will be at your expense. If you would like us to replace the goods with another size or colour, we will charge carriage on the replacement.

Please be aware that some navigational and safety products may be dated, and as such a full refund may in some cases not be possible. If you are purchasing dated navigational charts we suggest you contact us for more information.

Faulty Goods

If you receive your goods and believe them to be faulty, please contact us straight away with a brief description of the problem. If we require you to return the product for a replacement, we will send you a pre-paid Royal Mail label for delivery back to us. Unfortuantely we cannot send the courier back to collect the items.

Returning goods to Force 4 is easy!

• Please contact us by ringing 0345 1300 710 or email on [email protected] . This way we'll be able to determine whether you would like to return the product for a refund or whether you'd like to exchange the product. We are unable to process the return of faulty goods that we're not expecting.
• We'll then give you a returns number. This returns number will need to be clearly marked on the outside of your parcel so it can be identified on arrival. Please note, failure to mark a returns reference number on the outside of your parcel may result in a delay in processing your return.
• Don't forget your proof of postage, just in case!
• Once we receive the item we'll be able to proceed with a refund or an exchange.

As all of our Admiralty Charts are now Printed On Demand (the latest edition of charts when you order them), we can no longer refund the full cost of your order if you wish to return it. We will refund 40% of your order total in order to cover our costs.

To that effect, please make sure that you are happy with the coverage area of your chart prior to buying. If you have any questions before purchasing, please don't hesitate to contact us.

RYA Midlands blog – May 2024

The weather finally feels like the season is turning towards summer! After a seemingly endless and wet winter, it has been great to see so many people out enjoying some sunshine.

For my part it’s been good to get out and about, including a couple of days in Birmingham with my RYA London & South East counterpart Steve Mitchell, sharing ideas around projects which seek to promote diversity and inclusion in the sport.

We visited the Andrew Simpson Centre at Bartley and Sail Birmingham at Midland Sailing Club (pictured top) to catch up with their teams and scope ideas, while sharing knowledge about activities in London and the South East and vice versa.

I also had a sneak preview of the new Midlands Boat Station for the Sea Cadets at Edgbaston Reservoir – it’s due to open in time for this season and looks amazing.

Exciting times for the thousands of young people from Birmingham and beyond who will benefit from this state-of-the-art facility now and in the future!

Ben in a Boat

I also have quite a few ‘Ben in a Boat’ visits lined up, starting at Barnt Green Sailing Club in a week or so, followed by a number of clubs in Northamptonshire and Leicestershire through June and into early summer.

These afternoon and evening sessions provide an opportunity for me to visit your club to spend time with your team developing skills, with upcoming topics including updates for instructors, powerboat and safety boat drivers, and supporting youth activity.

There are still opportunities to book a ‘Ben in a Boat’ visit this season but the diary is getting busy so if you’re keen, please get in touch sooner rather than later.

Cruise in Company

I’m delighted to announce that booking is now open for our Cruise in Company! I am genuinely looking forward to this new event for the region.

We’ll have a flotilla of boats exploring Rutland Water using the RYA Dinghy Trail and you are invited to bring your own boat along to join in - or book a place aboard one of Rutland Sailing Club’s RS21 keelboats.

It will be great to get out with a purpose simply to enjoy a day on the water and for those of you who usually enjoy racing, it’s a chance to try something a little different.

RYA Midlands bursaries

We’ve been pleased to award our first RYA Midlands Learning & Development Bursaries. Congratulations to the eight clubs in the region who will benefit from grants in 2024 . We look forwarding to sharing their stories over the year.

If you didn’t apply this year or were not successful this time, the RYA Midlands Learning & Development Bursaries will be open again for applications 1 January-31 March 2025, so do take a look and start thinking now about how your club might be able to use a small grant to boost capacity and participation.

Female powerboat instructors

Our programme for aspiring female powerboat instructors is continuing, with a second group about to take the course to become qualified so they can take their skills back to their home clubs to support training and activities.

After the success of the RYA Connected events last year, I am pleased to confirm that the Midlands event will be returning to Brockington College this year.

This is one of our most crucial annual events for all RYA organisations that deliver activity afloat. Please make sure someone from your organisation is able to come along to share and learn. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 17 November.

And finally…

It’s been flying start to the season for Derbyshire Youth Sailing and the Northamptonshire Youth Series with lots of enthusiasm from clubs around the region, young participants and their parents.

Both offer fantastic one day open meetings for aspiring young racers, and include a warm welcome for those starting out or travelling for the first time. Please do share the details with the junior section at your club or centre!
