1st WINGSAIL series production yacht in the world!

The OceanWings32 - by Ayro© - was initially developed for Team Oracle, for the America’s Cup 2010 in Valencia. Over years, it has further been developed and automated by VPLP and was installed on Energy Observer in 2019. Two years of field feedback have allowed the Ayro team to fine tune the algorithm commanding the wingsail. The ZEN50 is the first series production leisure craft to be equipped with this fully automated wingsail. It is controlled at the touch of a finger on screens, is automatically adjusted and has several safety modes and features. The two parts of the wingsail can be hoisted and lowered independently and with the simple touch of a button. The wingsail OceanWings32 is the ideal complement for the solar roof for those wishing to cruise long distances off-shore with zero-emissions.

Greatest ratio SOLAR POWER / weight on the market

At 17 tonnes lightweight and 18,000 W of peak solar power, the ratio of the ZEN50 is at over 1 kW per displaced tonne of water or beyond 1:1 which is far beyond any other blue water CE Cat A yacht in this size range. Lots of solar power for little water to displace is the strong and healthy foundation the energy self-sufficient ZEN50 is built upon.

Performance CARBON sandwich hulls

The hulls of the ZEN50 have been designed from a blank screen for ultimate efficiency - understand minimum drag or minimal energy consumption for a range of speeds from 6 to 10 knots. Their shape is aggressive, sharp and slender. Their reverse bows cut through water like a sword cuts through butter and their curvature is reminiscent of graceful dolphin bodies. These hulls are undoubtedly of the performance type and are built with the best available composites: Carbon fibre and Corecell™. The combination of high strength, low weight and performance design allow the ZEN50 to reach speeds of up to 14 knots.

INFINITE range at high CONTINUOUS speeds

With maximized solar and wind power and minimized energy consumption… the ZEN50 can sail continuously at speeds varying between 6 and 10 knots. Thorough simulations in various sea states and weather system have consistently shown the ZEN50 will be able to achieve performance catamaran speeds continuously without using a genset. With the ZEN50, the world is your oyster and the wildest destinations are within your reach with this self-reliant vessel!

True ZERO-EMISSION operation

The first ZEN50 unit, whose construction started in March 2023, will not be equipped with a genset at all and will not have any fossil fuels onboard. The ZEN50 energy system with its very large capacity 160 kWh battery bank, has been designed to function for days in complete safety with minimal solar energy harvest and no wind. It is perfectly safe with no backup genset and operates 24/7 without any polluting emissions.

NO FUEL , no costs

Naturally, requiring no fuel to operate day in day out is great news for the environment, it is also fantastic news when sailing into remote areas where fuel bunkering might be near impossible or where the fuel quality might be an issue. Finally, it also makes a massive difference in this yacht’s costs of operation. Highest SAFETY & reliability

At ZEN Yachts, we have made some design choices to attain energy self-reliance with the ZEN50 that reduces the habitable volume in the hulls, similar to performance catamarans. Where we have not and will never compromise is on safety. Our main voltage system is 48V making it perfectly safe to work on. The level of redundancy of the batteries and solar panels is 10! The main electrical architecture is split in 2 so that should anything happen on 1 hull, the entire vessel can still operate normally. There are 2 independent helm stations and the ZEN50 is packed with special safety features, nonsubmersible compartments and we can even offer an in-depth practical course on safety equipment usage and management. Sailing with the ZEN50 is not only exhilarating and clean, it is ultra safe!

Every aspect of this vessel contributes towards its highly efficiency for solar electric sailing. MOBILE POWER STATION

During downtime, the SoelCat 12 can utilise its large solar array to provide energy for your land based electricity grid. The solar electric catamaran can be equipped with removable roll down screens on every side for flexibility in every situation. Screens for sun shading can be applied on good days, while transparent rain screens protect your guests in bad weather conditions. Where are Silent Yachts built?

Silent Yachts are built through two different shipyards depending on the model. The Silent 55 is built at the world-class shipyard of Mazarin German Yachts which also has a production site located in China. For over 70 years, Mazarin has been a leader in quality yacht construction with over 400 yachts delivered. Mazarin are experts in innovative construction processes that are able to produce light weight yachts.

The Silent 64 and Silent 80 are produced at the Italian-based shipyard Consorzio Navale which is a prestigous consoritum of builders and sub-contractors in the industry. The group has serviced many of the major Italian yacht brands such as Ferretti Yachts and Riva Yachts . Additionally, the Silent Yachts 80 features styling and design by Marco Casali and naval architecture by Insenaval.

Are Silent Yachts really completely solar-powered?

The short answer is yes. Owners can choose to go 100% solar-powered or install diesel engines should higher speeds want to be achieved over longer distances. Silent Yachts can cruise up to 100 miles per day by power acquired through its solar panels. Every day the solar panels are able to generate more power than the total consumption needed for propulsion at cruising speeds plus powering all of the appliances on board. 

How does the solar power work? 

The Silent Yachts power system feeds the electric propulsion of the power cat and all of the energy it needs to run the A/C, refrigerators, and other household appliances. Light-weight lithium batteries provide an ample amount of energy for everything on board. The lithium batteries used in Silent Yachts are the most expensive ones on the market, but also the most reliable, safe, and have the longest life span.

Solar panels are integrated to the roof of the flybridge hardtop sections instead of just being bolted on top, resulting in no wind load or resistance againest them. Below is a video explaining how the system functions and operates back when Silent Yachts were originally called "Solar Wave":

Who is the team behind Silent Yachts?

Heike and Michael Kohler have sent almost their entire lives on a boat. After more than two decades of using various boats, cruisers, and sailboats on multiple oceans, they became dedicated to finding a better energy source for the propulsion of yachts. Between the years of 2005 and 2009, Heike and Michael tested a number of a multitude of various alternative energy sources. In 2009, SolarWave 46 was launched as a proof of concept for their design. While there are many boats and yachts built that use solar power in some fashion, the Solarwave 46 was the first ocean-going yacht to use solar energy to power everything on board from engines to appliances.

What else is different about how Silent Yachts are built?

Certainly the solar-powered engines and generators are the distinguishing characteristic, but there are a lot of other features that make each Silent Yacht unique. For example, the molds were created using a CNC-milling machine that is able to contruct particular shapes for an optimized design. The materials used in the hull include a carbon compositie that is then resin-infused for a light-weight, but very strong platform. Every hull is fully insulated and the long-term durability is exceptional thanks to the high-quality resin used in the infusion process.

What propulsion systems are recommended by Silent Yachts?

Silent Yachts recommends the 2 x 135 engines as the best solution. If the owner is making frequest trips from Point A to B (Say Miami to the Bahamas for example) the faster hybrid is recommended. The main differentiator here is cruising speed. If the owner is living on the yacht for an extended period of time, rarely pushes the engines to top speeds, and stays below 12 knots, then the E-Power is recommended.

When the generator is running, does the 100Kw go to charging the batteries (which run the 250 Kw e-Motors) or directly to the e-Motors?

All of the enery consumers and producers are connected to the bus bar. If there happens to be more power produced than consumed, the excess power goes to re-charge the batteries. If for some reason more power is required than what is produced, the needed power comes from the lithium batteries.

What is the sustained speed if both 100 Kw generators are running?

This answer really depends upon sea condition and the weight of the boat (for example components, additional equipment, water toys, etc.). The sustained speed on average though is between 12 and 14 knots, 10 knots with one generator running. It is possible to cruise at 10 knots without a generator running when using the Solar E-Power.

In the aft of the portside hull, the staircase can be raised to reveal a fully enclosed tender garage. It fits tenders with a maximum length of up to 5.20 m, such as the Silent Tender 520, and has a direct charging point to recharge electric tenders with energy produced by the yacht.

Largest salon area

When compared to other catamarans of similar size, the 52 m² salon of the 80 Series leads with the largest amount of interior space. This creates a lounge like ambiance which offers all the necessities such as a fully equipped galley to enjoy your stay on board.

French-based builder Fountaine Pajot has teamed up with the charter firm Dream Yacht Worldwide to launch the Aura 51 Smart Electric as the first model in a collection of electric -powered catamarans .

The Aura 51 Smart Electric is a zero-emissions design that stores energy in two lithium battery banks. It will become available for charter in Italy starting in April, with about two dozen electric yachts expected to join the Dream fleet by spring 2024. Ten of them will be sailing catamarans, and a dozen will be monohull sailing yachts from Dufour, which is part of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

“By partnering and supporting the research and development of electric yachts, we can continue to make sailing accessible to people around the world but with a lower impact on our seas and environment,” Loïc Bonnet, CEO and founder of Dream Yacht Group, stated in a press release. “Being environmentally conscious is central to our mission to protect our planet and oceans, and we are confident that our charter clients will support this endeavor.”

How big of an eco-difference can these types of boats make? Fountaine Pajot says only 20 percent of the carbon footprint comes from producing the boats. Some 80 percent comes from the use of the boats.

• Travelled 145nm with an average speed of 7 knots
• Generator used for about 12h (in total)
• Fuel consumed: 208 liters

Here are some interesting observations they made:

• While cruising it may feel less stable than a standard sailing boat because it doesn’t have a sail to stabilize it when hitting the waves.
• For the Silent 55 it was possible to move at about 3 knots by using only the power generated by the solar panels (without using the batteries) on a sunny day. This means that if you are moving the solar yacht around quite frequently, you will end up using the generator quite a lot to produce the necessary power.
• When the batteries are out of power, the Silent yacht is using a (diesel) generator to supply the necessary power to keep the boat moving and to power the appliances.
• A great luxury yacht with all the comforts and going in the right direction for the future of the sector.
• Overall, the Silent Yacht is a great eco-friendly alternative to a power boat , while if you are thinking about cruising around the world, you would be probably better off going for a standard sailboat (or for some of the hybrid alternatives mentioned in this article, like the HH44).

Energy Observer, a fully energy-independent French catamaran, made a stop in Washington DC last week on its way to New York City for Earth Day, showcasing the potential of electric ships and new energy technologies.

However, don't expect to buy a fully energy-independent catamaran for your weekend fishing trip any time soon. This lightweight vessel is not just a boat; it is a floating experimental laboratory that allows for real-life testing of innovative technologies. Covered with 202m2 of photovoltaic (PV) panels that utilize different mono-facial and bifacial PV technologies supplied by companies from around the world, Energy Observer boasts a solar capacity of 34 kWp. These panels are exposed to harsh conditions, including salty ocean water, merciless UV light, and sun driving the panel temperatures as high as 75°C (167°F), allowing researchers to assess their performance in maritime environments.

The solar panels not only supply the ship's immediate electricity needs but also power a water desalination unit and charge batteries for times when the sun is not shining. For long-term energy storage, the ship features a custom-built, marinized 70kW hydrogen fuel cell, fitting snugly into the port hull, which has produced over 1.3 tons of hydrogen on board since the start of the ship’s Odyssey. Additionally, Energy Observer is equipped with two automated propulsion wings, called Ocean Wings, that propel the vessel forward, thus saving energy. The crew consists of individuals with a racing background who have decided that they are bored of racing for trophies and want to focus on doing good for the world. Despite its 115-horsepower engine limiting the boat's top speed to 12.7 miles per hour, slower than a typical cruising catamaran, the Observer has already traveled over 62,000 nautical miles (over 71,000 miles) without consuming a single drop of fuel.

"Energy Observer is a human and technological adventure, an invitation to rethink our world and explore new paths towards a low-carbon energy future," says Victorien Erussard, an offshore racer and merchant navy officer, who initiated the Energy Observer project in 2013. After a decade of development, his team has built partnerships with multiple R&D companies and established the Energy Observer Foundation, which supports innovative technologies and raises international awareness of the potential of hydrogen. The team is currently working on a multipurpose cargo ship project fueled by liquid hydrogen.

Even though Energy Observer is one of a kind, electrifying short-haul maritime transportation is now a trend in the U.S. and internationally. A fully electric catamaran, 30 meters long and 8 meters wide, is currently in the construction phase to carry passengers across Lake Constance, the second-largest freshwater lake in Central Europe. Earlier this month, the first electric tug boat in the U.S., the eWolf, arrived at the Port of San Diego. If you are visiting Niagara Falls, you will be brought to marvel at the waterfalls by The Maid of the Mist passenger vessels, which are also battery-powered. The commissioning of electric ferries has also been announced by Wärtsilä in November 2023 to service the San Francisco Bay Ferry system.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

City of Canton to buy its first electric vehicle

• With an 8-4 vote, Canton City Council on Monday authorized buying a Ford F-150 Lightning or similar electric vehicle for the traffic engineering department.

Council members who supported the purchase of the electric vehicle cited its lower carbon emissions and lower fuel and maintenance costs.

• Council members who opposed the EV purchase expressed concerns about the cost of the vehicle and the tools to maintain it, the longevity of EVs and whether they are better for the environment.

CANTON – The city of Canton is buying its first electric vehicle, roughly three years after installing public charging stations to encourage the use of EVs.

With an 8-4 vote, Canton City Council on Monday authorized buying a Ford F-150 Lightning or similar electric vehicle for the traffic engineering department. The truck is estimated to cost $72,000, and the city is applying for a $7,500 federal reimbursement.

The new EV truck will be primarily used as a supervisory vehicle for around-town driving. It will replace an 18-year-old truck that gets roughly 9.85 miles to a gallon of gasoline.

At least 10 other Ohio cities , including Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton, have purchased electric vehicles for their fleets.

Here are four things to know about Canton’s first electric vehicle:

1. Electric vehicle supporters cite lower fuel and maintenance costs, reduced emissions.

Ward 5 Councilman Robert Fisher, who chairs council’s Environmental and Public Utilities Committee and introduced the legislation to purchase the EV, said the Ford Lightning’s operational cost is estimated to be 17% lower over eight years than its gas-powered counterparts.

If the city receives the $7,500 federal reimbursement, the initial cost of the EV would be comparable to the $60,000 to $65,000 cost of a similar gas-powered vehicle, supporters added.

Council Majority Leader John Mariol II, who has owned an electric vehicle for the past year, believes the public needs to move to electric to help save the environment and government needs to take the lead.

“If we can do something that saves taxpayer money, protects the environment and leads (the change) where we’re ahead of the curve instead of behind the curve, that is a win across the board,” said Mariol, who estimated that he’s saved more than $3,000 on gas. “I think this is the biggest no-brainer.”

Councilmen Louis Giavasis and Richard Sacco believe the city should give it a try.

“I don’t look at this as an experiment,” Giavasis said. “I look at this as we’re looking toward the future. … We’re not going to know how well this is going to work until we try.”

2. EV opponents concerned about vehicle's longevity, high cost.

The four council members who opposed buying the electric vehicle – Greg Hawk, Brenda Kimbrough, Jason Scaglione and Frank Morris III – expressed concerns about the cost of the vehicle and the tools to maintain it, the longevity of EVs and whether they actually are better for the environment.

Morris said with the higher purchase price and the more than $20,000 in tools the city would need to buy to maintain its one electric vehicle, the cost is too high.

“If you wouldn’t consider spending this kind of money on a vehicle for yourself in the name of going green and you wouldn’t reach into your own pocket to spend $100,000 of your money on a vehicle, then you sure as hell shouldn’t do it with the taxpayers’ money because we are elected to represent them and to protect the financial interest of the city,” Morris said.

Hawk also questioned the purchase price and the potential costs related to replacing and disposing of the battery.

“I can’t see spending that kind of money on one vehicle to make an experiment out of it,” he said.

Scaligone cited a series of statistics that suggest EV tires wear out faster than traditional vehicles due to their heavier weight, that environmental benefits of an EV are negated by the inability to recycle most of the batteries and the water-intensive and emission-producing process to create EV batteries.

Morris quipped that if council was so insistent on being environmentally friendly, it should buy the engineering department a bicycle to drive around town.

“A bicycle would really be green,” he said. “It would definitely lower our carbon footprint and would save us approximately $99,500.”

3. Canton’s mayor supports electric vehicle purchase.

Mayor William V. Sherer II supports council’s electric vehicle purchase and said more efforts to reduce the city’s carbon footprint are coming.

“I don’t have a problem giving this a shot," he said. "I’m not saying every car that the city buys is going to be electric. But I don’t have a problem as mayor at least giving this a shot to see what happens.”

He said federal officials cited Canton's lack of a plan to reduce carbon emissions as a primary reason they didn't award the city a federal grant for its Tuscarawas Street W reconstruction project. Sherer said city officials are working on that plan now.

“We are going to make a better attempt at going green in this city,” he said.

Some of Canton’s recent efforts to reduce its environmental impact include installing four public EV charging stations in 2021, joining the Power a Clean Future Ohio coalition in 2022, and having its vehicle fleet and buildings assessed for energy improvements.

Council earlier this month approved replacing the lights at City Hall, the Southeast Community Center and the City Service Center with energy-efficient LED lighting.

The project is expected to cost $735,807 with a grant paying $500,000.  Federal funds the city received from the American Rescue Plan Act to help it recover from the coronavirus pandemic will be used for the city’s share of $235,807.

Officials with Ameresco, the company that assessed the city buildings for energy efficient improvements, estimate the new lighting will save the city about $50,000 a year in utility, operation and maintenance costs, giving the city a five-year return on investment.

4. EV repair tools are part of the city's capital projects for 2024.

Council on Monday separately approved allocating $41,000 to the city's motor vehicles department to purchase the tools it needs to repair electric vehicles as part of the city’s capital projects list for 2024. City officials estimate that it will cost $23,000 to buy a laptop with applicable EV software and an insulated tool kit that is needed to prevent city workers from being shocked while repairing an electric vehicle. Officials believe another $28,000 will be needed for other maintenance tools if Canton decides to move forward with additional electric vehicles.

This year's $14 million capital project list also includes the purchase of several vehicles such as cruisers, snow plows and sewer trucks, a roof replacement for Fire Station 1, a fire alarm system for Munson Stadium, road reconstruction and storm sewer replacement projects, a chiller and dasher replacement at the ice rink, portable radios and other safety gear for emergency responders and a boiler for the city-owned Greater Canton Amateur Sports Hall of Fame.

Council on Monday also approved its operating budget for the year. The $325 million budget is slightly lower than the temporary budget that council passed in December as officials revised their estimates with more specific information.

She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
