Bottom Line

The Royal Yacht Hotel is nearly as posh as it sounds, located right on the waterfront in St. Helier with a view of the harbor. Despite the luxe spa and exclusive atmosphere, the newer glass-heavy additions and wild interior decor make it look over designed, especially in the context of its neighbors. Still, with its modern rooms and stylish, popular restaurants, it fares well when compared with other upscale hotels in the area. The rates are generally higher than those at the nearby Pomme d'Or, but the Royal Yacht Hotel has a spa, pool, sauna, and whirlpool on-site, along with private balconies. It tends to be a hot spot for business travelers and party-goers, which creates a late-night mix that can get raucous.

A newer addition of wavy glass-fronted balconies abuts the original Royal Yacht Hotel building in a pairing that seems at war, but the hotel still bustles with business travelers year-round. Local residents and leisure tourists also flock to the cool bars and restaurants, making the carnival of printed upholstery and colored mood lighting on the ground floor a St. Helier social hub.

The hotel is located on the water, just a short walk from St. Helier marina and close to many shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as the Maritime Museum. The waterfront gardens are nearby, and all the island's best shopping and cafes are within easy walking distance, as are such notable attractions as the Victorian-era Central and Beresford indoor markets, the Jersey Museum, and Jersey St. Saviour's Church.

Playing on the hotel's nautical theme, the stylish rooms combine a chic decor with copious amounts of natural wood. Tiered categories range from Silver and Gold to Platinum Rooms, all with satellite flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning,  electric tea makers, and minibars. Cream and white, with touches of blue, complement the partial parquet walls and wood furniture. Silver Rooms are on the small side, with Gold Rooms giving more space to the small work desks and sitting area. Gold Deluxe Double Rooms have either an extra living room space, or a balcony. The flagship restaurant, Sirocco, serves British cuisine with a modern flair, while Cafe Zephyr has a brasserie menu with a focus on seafood. Both have outdoor patio seating. The Grill focuses on steak and wine, with lunches that are a big hit with the business crowd. The tiny P.O.S.H Bar's cigars and Champagne menu is as nouveau as The Cabin, with it's exposed wooden timbers, is timeless. The Drift Club in the back of the hotel, which becomes a scene on the weekends with live entertainment and DJ's, keeps revelers going late into the night. There's also a small wine tasting room in The Cellar, which can be booked for private functions for up to six people, and the hotel has a number of modern meeting rooms, including a conference hall that can accommodate up to 300 attendees.

St Helier Yacht Club's roots go back as far as 1903 and now its membership is currently just short of 3,000 making it one of the largest yacht clubs in British waters.

A club is, above all else, the sum of its members and St Helier Yacht Club has been blessed with a generous sprinkling of interesting characters down through the years.

Arguably the most famous was the millionaire philanthropist T B Davis who owned and raced the fabulous schooner Westward between the two World Wars. A Patron of the club, Davis raced Westward in British and European waters, often in close-fought duels against the King's yacht Britannia.

The club's very first Patron was also a famous man - Sir Jesse Boot (later to become Lord Trent), founder of Boot's the Chemist. In 1924 he presented three sailing boats and two rowing gigs to the club to introduce boating to those who could not afford their own craft. Two of those sailing boats, Florence and Jesse, have recently been restored at the Maritime Museum and are now regularly sailing again in St Aubin's Bay, three-quarters of a century after they were donated to the club.

Another notable club member was John Marriner, an intrepid yachtsman who in the early 1950's made a number of extensive voyages through the French canals to the Mediterranean. Then in May 1959 he sailed from Jersey on a challenging trip that took him through the Baltic to the Iron Curtain countries of East Germany and Poland, a daunting prospect during the days of the 'Cold War'.

One intrepid club member was 17-year-old David Sandeman who in 1976 entered the record books as the youngest person to sail the Atlantic single-handed - a record only broken at the beginning of 2003 by 15-year-old Sebastian Clover from the Isle of Wight.

A pivotal moment in the club's history was the involvement of it's members in the evacuation of British troops from St Malo in June 1940. Two convoys of boats sailed from St Helier, the first ferrying troops and stores from the French port to transporters lying offshore, the second helping to take off the remaining troops and demolition party just as German forces entered the city.

The club's immediate response to the Admirality's request for help, described later as 'the little Dunkirk', led to the unique award of a 'Battle Honour' in the form of a defaced Red Ensign that members have proudly flown on their boats ever since. Nine years later, during a Royal Visit by Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip paid an hour-long visit to the Club specifically to meet the people who had taken part in the evacuation.

Some of the Clubs members have raced successfully in events away from the Island, in particular at Cowes the 'Mecca' of British yachting. Peter Morton, for example, won the famous Round the Isle of Wight Race outright in Odd Job and became part of the club team that won the prestigious Commodore's Cup at Cowes in 1992. Restaurateur George Skelley also enjoyed considerable success, coming third overall and winning his class in the Round the Isle of Wight Race in his 34-ft yacht Borsalino Trois. She also was part of the British team for the ¾-ton Cup in both 1976 and 1977. In 2006 Phil Sharp competed and won his class in the Route du Rhum and continues to campaign towards bigger and better events.

Closer to home, many members have of course achieved considerable success in the various races organized by the club in the Channel Island waters. Although it is a little invidious to mention just one yacht there is no doubt that Arc en Ciel, sailed by Ken and Lenora Renouard, attained an unrivalled selection of trophies over a 15-year period. Built in 1976, the half-tonner quickly established a great reputation, winning nearly all the cups in local racing at least once and some three or four times.

Mrs Renouard also holds a special place in the history of the club for she was the first and only lady member to hold the office of Commodore. The first person to be elected to that position was Bill Kent, who together with 11 like-minded boat-owners established St Helier Yacht Club in 1903. One hundred years later Peter Walsh held the title.

The longest-serving Commodore was W S Le Masurier who was elected to the position in 1925 and remained in the post until 1952. He oversaw the relocation of the club on two occasions and was responsible for organizing the club's involvement in the 1940 evacuation of St Malo and for welcoming Prince Phillip to the club nine years later.

That regal link is reinforced in the foreword to the book 'Sailing through a Century' by Philip Jeune and Kevin Le Scelleur, written by HRH The Princess Royal, a keen sailor and President of the Royal Yachting Association. The princess says that the members of St Helier Yacht Club can take considerable pride in the fact that their organization has played a key role in developing the sailing and boat-handling skills of thousands of Islanders over the past century.

'Long may the people of Jersey continue their close association with the sea,' she concludes, 'and long may St Helier Yacht Club continue to play a key role in that alliance.'

Moscow's Legendary Hotel Moskva to Reopen

Hotel Moskva, finished at the height of Stalin's power and demolished a decade ago under Moscow's construction-happy former Mayor Yury Luzhkov, will open its doors again Thursday as the Four Seasons Hotel Moscow, an exact replica of its iconic predecessor.

The hotel's prominent position immediately next to Red Square on Manezh Square has long made it a landmark for both Muscovites and tourists alike, as has its asymmetric exterior — two different styles flank the facade, plain on the right and more elaborate on the left.

One story, likely apocryphal, goes that hotel architect Alexei Shchusev gave Stalin plans for two possible versions for the facade on the same sheet of paper. Stalin scrawled his signature over both, and Shchusev, too afraid to contradict him, simply combined the two styles.

After opening in 1935, the hotel played host to top party bureaucrats and distinguished guests throughout the Soviet-era. British turncoat Guy Burgess stayed here, as did Yury Gagarin soon after becoming the first man in space.

Today's hotel, however, will host only those rich enough to afford its prices. Whereas the original hotel's 15 stories housed 1,000 guest rooms, the current five-star incarnation at 180 rooms has some of the most spacious accommodation in Moscow. Rooms have a minimum of 430 square feet, with  the hotel's cheapest room costing 28,500 rubles ($675) on opening night, Oct. 30.

General Manager Max Musto noted that there was already high demand for the hotel's corner rooms, which have views over the Kremlin and other Moscow landmarks. The hotel will also hold five restaurants and lounges and a spa.

The Four Seasons, a Canadian hotel operator, also operates a newly opened hotel in St. Petersburg. According to research released in July by real-estate analytics firm JLL, 40 percent of Moscow's branded hotels are either in the upscale or luxury segments of the market.

Reconstruction work on Hotel Moskva began in the early 2000s, when the Moscow city government, the hotel's owner, decided to tear down the building and modernize it. The tender for reconstruction went to obscure U.S. firm Decorum Corp. which agreed to finance the hotel's restoration for $350 million in return for a 51 percent stake.

Hotel Moskva's reconstruction, however, was, nothing new for then-Mayor Luzhkov. He presided over a sweeping range of construction projects, from the recreation of a massive former palace of Catherine the Great to the demolition of Hotel Rossiya, which was until 1990 the largest hotel in the world.

At the time, Luzhkov, whose wife Yelena Baturina became Russia's richest woman while heading a property development firm, was accused by critics of profiting off corrupt real-estate dealings.
