Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

yacht master oysterflex strap

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes).

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

yacht master oysterflex strap

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

yacht master oysterflex strap

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

yacht master oysterflex strap

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet.

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

yacht master oysterflex strap

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

yacht master oysterflex strap

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. However there is also another side to the watch, and to the Rolex approach to luxury in general: the taking of such pains to produce technical perfection that technical perfection becomes a luxury in itself.

How to Adjust the Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet

Paul Altieri

First introduced in 2015 on the Everose gold Yacht-Master 40, the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet represents a radical departure from the previous styles of bracelets that can be found on Rolex watches . In the most simple of terms, the Oysterflex bracelet is Rolex’s take on a rubber watch strap. However, to call it a rubber strap would be a bit misleading since it has just as much in common with a metal bracelet, and just like everything else that Rolex produces, the Oysterflex has been over-engineered to an unimaginable extent, taking into consideration every possible detail.

When it comes to adjusting Rolex’s metal bracelets, sizing them is a pretty straightforward task. In addition to any adjustment offered by the clasp itself, links can be added or removed from the bracelet in order to achieve the desired size. However, when it comes to the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet, each side is a single seamless piece of material connected by a solid gold clasp. So, how do you adjust the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet?

Click here for our Ultimate Guide on Rolex Bracelets.

What Is the Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet?

Before we get into the actual process of how to adjust the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet, it might be worth briefly discussing the Oysterflex itself and how it differs from other Rolex bracelets. While the Oysterflex may look like a rubber strap, Rolex actually classifies it as a bracelet since each side features a flexible metal core made from a highly-flexible titanium and nickel-alloy, which is then coated in black elastomer.

Just like one of Rolex’s metal bracelets, the Oysterflex surrounds your entire wrist with mechanically-connected metal components. However, while Rolex’s metal bracelets feature multiple individual links connecting each side of the watch to its clasp, those entire sections are made up of a single flexible metal link on the Oysterflex bracelet. It may look like a standard rubber strap, but the Oysterflex benefits from the strength of a metal bracelet combined with the comfort, flexibility, and lightweight construction of rubber. Consequently, it is considered to be a premium option within Rolex’s catalog and it is exclusively fitted to a handful of models that are all crafted from solid 18k gold.

With that in mind, since each side of the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is a single piece and you cannot simply add or remove individual links in order to adjust it to a desired circumference, sizing the Oysterflex bracelet follows a slightly different overall process. Additionally, achieving the perfect fit may even require a quick trip to your local authorized Rolex retailer, as there is always a possibility that you will not be able to adjust the bracelet enough without first swapping out one of the sides for one that is a different length.

Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet Yacht-Master 40 Everose Gold

There are two main ways of adjusting the size of your Oysterflex bracelet. Small adjustments can be achieved by using its included clasp extension system, while larger alterations are made by swapping out one or both of its sides for equivalent versions of a different length, which are available for purchase directly from Rolex.

Micro-Adjustment with the Clasp

The first thing you should do when adjusting your Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is to check and see if you are able to achieve the desired fit by adjusting your clasp. All of the various Rolex watches that are fitted with Oysterflex bracelets also feature clasps that include some type of extension system. Some of the earliest Oysterflex bracelets received clasps with the Fliplock extension, which enables you to instantly expand or contract the bracelet by approximately 5mm with the fold-out extension link hidden inside the clasp.

However, in the years since the Oysterflex bracelet made its debut, Rolex has expanded its clasp adjustment capabilities. All of the current-production Rolex watches that are fitted with Oysterflex bracelets now also include clasps with Rolex’s patented Glidelock extension system. This allows for instantaneous tool-free adjustment in small increments, which can often be enough to either expand or contract an Oysterflex bracelet to fit your wrist. However, if your Oysterflex still remains too big or too small even after adjusting your clasp, you may need to swap out one or both of the sides for an equivalent version of a different length.

Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet Yacht-Master 42 White Gold

Different Oysterflex Bracelet Sizes

Each side of the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is produced in different lengths, and all of them have corresponding letter codes attached to them. Different combinations of sizes can be used to achieve different desired circumferences, while simultaneously ensuring that the clasp of your Oysterflex bracelet stays centered on the bottom of your wrist.

The following table outlines how this sizing system works for the various Rolex Daytona watches that are equipped with Oysterflex bracelets.

It’s important to keep in mind that this recommended sizing system will differ between watches, so the Rolex Sky-Dweller and each of the different Rolex Yacht-Master models will all have their own recommended sizing structures due to the different sizes and dimensions of their cases. Additionally, while these are approximate guidelines for Oysterflex sizes, the shape of someone’s wrist and their individual preferences can also have an impact on the right combination, so if you do ultimately need to swap out one of the sides on your Oysterflex bracelet, it is always recommended to visit your local authorized retailer to confirm exactly which combination of side sizes works best for your wrist.

How to Adjust Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet

Rolex 116655 Oysterflex

First presented on the Everest gold Yachtmaster 116655, the Rolex Oysterflex is a new addition to Rolex’s collection of bracelets.

With the increased popularity of rubber bracelets on watches, the introduction of a rubber strap for some watches as the official bracelet for those models was a clever move.

However, Rolex doesn’t call its bracelet a rubber bracelet, but instead, in order to be unique, it’s not a rubber bracelet, instead, the bracelet is called the Oysterflex.

The Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is made of Elastomer which is formed from “elastic” and “polymer”. Essentially a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers.

The Rolex oyster flex bracelet isn’t your ordinary rubber bracelet, and as you would expect from Rolex, it’s nothing else than perfection. To make it sit better on the wrist, Rolex has even made ridges and molded them into the wrist-side of the bracelet.

The Oysterflex bracelet has since it was first released presented on several watches, including the Rolex 116519 LN Cosmograph Daytona. The bracelet adds a sporty feel to the watch, and is very comfortable on the wrist as it is soft, unlike a metal bracelet. In Rolex’s words ”it offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets without compromising robustness, waterproofness, or reliability.”

Now that we’ve got a better understanding of what it is we’re dealing with, let’s look at how you can adjust the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet because it’s not as given as Rolex metal bracelets. With a regular metal bracelet, you can just remove links, but obviously, you cannot do that with an Oysterflex bracelet.

How to adjust Rolex Oysterflex bracelet

Micro-adjustments.

The first way you can size your Rolex Oysterflex bracelet is by using the micro-adjustments on the clasp.

This can be done in the same way as you can adjust any clasps on a Rolex Oyster bracelet. This is made possible since the Oysterflex bracelet carries an Oyster clasp and not just a regular pin-hole lock system which most of the rubber straps that you buy separately do.

The catch with the micro-adjustments on the Rolex clasp is it only allows for just that – micro-adjustments. More specifically, 7mm of adjustment.

As such, you cannot adjust the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet to a large extent using this method.

So, what is the solution..?

If your Oysterflex bracelet is still too large (it’s seldom too big from scratch) when you’ve made the micro-adjustment on the clasp, you will have to find another approach.

Different sizes of the bracelet

If you purchase a Rolex watch with an Oysterflex bracelet from an Authorised dealer, you’ll have the opportunity to choose between several different lengths of the Oysterflex bracelet when you buy it. Of course, you may need different sizes on each side. With the sizes on each side, you combine to create the perfect fit when you buy your Rolex with an Oysterflex bracelet.

Rolex Oysterflex size guide

When you buy a watch from an authorized dealer, they will measure your wrist and choose both sides of the bracelet that will make the watch fit your wrist perfectly.

If you don’t buy the watch from an authorized dealer, you will obviously not have this opportunity to adjust Rolex Oysterflex bracelet in the store, since the bracelet will then come on the size of the bracelet that it comes on.

Some people’s natural thought when the band is too big is to cut or punch holes to adjust the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet because there’s a nickel/titanium support inside that you could damage. Additionally, you’ll significantly reduce the value of the watch.

If you haven’t purchased your Rolex watch at an AD, it means that you probably won’t get an Oysterflex bracelet that is optimized for your wrist. As such, you need to buy new pieces of the Oysterflex bracelet. These cost about $175 each, which means about $350 for a complete set that suits your wrist perfectly. If you don’t wish to purchase an official Rolex Oysterflex bracelet, you can always buy a rubber strap from a third-party brand.

2019 Update: Rolex introduces Glidelock clasp for the Oysterflex

At the 2019 Basel watch fair, Rolex introduced yet another way for Rolex Oysterflex-bracelet owners to adjust their Rolex Oysterflex bracelet. And they did so by introducing their praised Glidelock system to the Oysterflex. Read our c omplete guide to the Rolex Glidelock system .

Rolex Oyterflex

Firstly, Rolex discontinued the Rose gold Yacht-Master 116655 with Oysterflex bracelet and introduced the new reference 126655. The difference was that the watch got the second generation movement – the caliber 3235, but it also received the Glidelock clasp. This clasp extension system enables easy adjustments in 2mm increments of up to a total of about 20mm without the use of any tools. This system has existed on some of Rolex’s dive watches, such as the Submariner, for many years.

Furthermore, Rolex introduced the 42mm Yacht-Master in white gold, a complete version of the Yacht-Master for Rolex, and this watch also features an Oysterflex bracelet with a Glidelock clasp.

Because the Glidelock system is so praised and appreciated, it does not seem unlikely that all Oysterflex-bracelet watches receive this clever clasp system in the future.

If you have more questions about adjusting your Oysterflex, you are more than welcome to contact us!

Thanks for the excellent manual

Do the oysterflex straps follow the same sizing guide for the 126655 vs the 116655? Very good, detailed article.

' src=

Yes and no because the new Glidelock clasp is longer but it also offers the ability to adjust the sizing.

Kind regards, Millenary Watches

' src=

Hi where can I buy the original Oysterflex strap that you say costs around 350$???

Hi, Contact an official Rolex retailer.

' src=

I had to shorten it to my wrist size. Took out the pin from the end of one strap (had to do a bit of manhandling though) and refixed the pin on the third hole and fixed it to the strap end. Working well. If one needs to shorten more, I guess one has to snip of the end where the hole is, so the pin can go into another hole in the rubber end.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Rolex advises opting for the correct size Oysterflex bracelet but some choose to go this route instead.

' src=

whatever you do don’t pull the pin out with pliers as shown on a youtube video tutorial, you need to use something to poke it out and maybe use a hammer, i ended up just taking it to my friend’s rolex store and having him do it for me, since i didn’t want to damage the watch.

' src=

Purchased a used Daytona Cosmograph with the oysterflex strap E-F and it is slightly tight on my wrist. Do you recommend I get a new band with both the 6 and 12 o’clock sides or just change the 12 oclock section to G. Going from F to G will increase the band size by how much?

Hi, E-F is specified as wrist size 170-180mm. E-G is 180-191mm. You should not have to get a band for both sides. One should definitely be enough.

Moscow marks Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary

This week, the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre at the Indian Embassy in Moscow, the Ramakrishna Society – Vedanta Centre and the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, jointly commemorated the 150 th  birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

In his opening remarks, India’s Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra dwelt upon the contributions made by Swami Vivekananda, one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 19 th  / 20 th  centuries. The sage was a social reformer and a great scholar whose teachings influenced many across the globe and continued to do so even today. The Indian ambassador highlighted the message propagated by Swami Vivekananda that “service to God can be rendered by service to mankind.”

Other prominent speakers on the occasion were Swami Jyotirupananda, Rostislav Rybakov and Mark Mokulsky who highlighted various aspects of the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda and their enduring contemporary relevance.

The Labour Valour Fund honoured Professor Rybakov and Swami Jyotirupananda with awards on the occasion.

Swami Jyotirupananda, president of the Ramakrishna Mission in Moscow, was the first speaker. He emphasised Vivekananda’s role as a fighter for the rights of the suppressed members of society in India. Jyotirupananda reminded that in India that April 15 - the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda – is celebrated not only by holding lectures and functions but also by holding charitable activities. During the 4 years from 2010 to 2014, special attention is devoted in India to helping women and children, as well as other members of society who are in need of support. Within the framework of the programme, children from poor families and orphans are fed, tended to by the doctors and given primary education. Another part of the action is the support of mothers.  There is also a moving exhibition of Vivekananda in train which travels from state to state.

Source: Embassy of India in Moscow

Jyotirupananda reminded the audience that Swami Vivekananda was the first person to suggest spreading the great Vedic wisdom across the world. “Scientists say that a human being is an economical and biological creature,” he said. “But this is not the whole truth. The wise philosophers even before Ramakrishna and Vivekananda spoke against it. The scientists say that they acknowledge the consciousness but they don’t understand its nature.”

Mark Mokulsky, Prof. and Dr. of physical and mathematical sciences at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences, followed the discussion about Vievakananda by sharing his hypothesis on the connection between spirituality of Vedanta and genetic-molecular science. Mokulsky is very much interested in the in-depth interpretation of ancient religions. He spoke about a number of signs forming human genetic code and the mysteries ciphered in the ancient Vedic scriptures.

Kharma Bhoomi

Another eminent speaker Rostislav Rybakov, Indologist, Dr. of historical sciences and Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994-2009, elaborated about the relevance of Vivekananda’s teachings to the issues Russia has to face in our day. Rybakov maintains that Vivekananda’s philosophy is very much on the agenda for Russia and Russians of the 21 st century.

He called Vivekananda a man that came from the future to teach people the great wisdom, and people are very slowly and gradually moving towards the understanding of his ideas.

Recalling the recent Day of Cosmonautics in Russia, Rybakov also quoted the legendary Yuri Gagarin who said: “India looks like a big human heart from the space.”  According to Rybakov, such an observation coming from the first cosmonaut shows that India represents the centre of spirituality for the world even at the sceptical epoch of scientific and technological progress.

Professor Rybakov believes that in the past Russia, which had a lot of things in common with India, has lost its traditional values. “Disrespect is one of the toughest issues that Russians have to fight today,” he says. “All kinds of disrespect. Disrespect towards people, towards history, towards law, and, finally, towards ourselves.”

yacht master oysterflex strap

Among the big problems of contemporary Russia, Rybakov singles out a lack of education, and, what he considers even worse, poor education; when a person has heard a little on every subject but doesn’t have profound knowledge on anything. This idea is intertwined with what Alexander Pushkin said in his famous work Evgeny Onegin about Russia’s high society in the 19 th century: “We all meandered through our schooling      haphazard; so, to God be thanks, it's easy, without too much fooling, to pass for cultured in our ranks.”

Rybakov believes that the only path to follow is to educate children from the youngest age, but not simply educating but imbibing them with moral and ethical values that will lay the foundation for their future view of the world. “The way that we need to go is lengthy, torturous and complex,” Rybakov says. But it is the only possible way.”

The finishing stroke of Rybakov’s speech was drowned in enthusiastic applause: “Recently, the French actor Gerard Depardieu has become an honourable citizen of Russia. But, in my view, Swami Vivekananda should become an honourable citizen of Russia, even after his death. We need him very much in our lives today.”

Yacht-Master

Marine character, the yacht-master and yacht-master ii models embody the brand’s nautical spirit..

Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of yachting since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the brand’s nautical spirit. The Yacht-Master brilliantly blends function and seafaring style. Presented in 2007, the Yacht-Master II is a regatta chronograph built for yachting competitions.

The emblematic watch of the sailing world, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 is now available in RLX titanium.

The Yacht-Master range celebrates the ties between Rolex and the world of sailing.

The watch of the open seas

The Yacht-Master is easily recognizable for its bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel. This characteristic and functional bezel – which enables the wearer to read time intervals, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – plays a full part in creating the unique visual identity of the watch.

Innovative regatta chronograph

The Yacht-Master II is a unique regatta chronograph dedicated to both yachting enthusiasts and experienced sailors. It features a countdown function with a mechanical memory programmable from 1 to 10 minutes which can be synchronized on the fly – a function that responds to the need for precise timing during the crucial starting sequence of a regatta.
