There’s some irony when it comes to looking at the hottest interior design trends for custom sailing yachts: much of the inspiration for today’s designs draw from the past – combined with modern innovation.

Interior designs that emphasize simplicity, balance, and natural materials are hardly revolutionary.  Quite the opposite.  But there is a new take and balance between old and new, iconic and innovative, that seems to provide the perfect balance for creating incredible interior spaces.

We’re exploring the top 7 trends in custom yacht design for 2023.

Natural Light and Connection Between Interior and Exterior Spaces

The use of larger windows is a trend that has been gaining popularity in yacht design in recent years, as yacht owners increasingly want to maximize their views of the surrounding environment and bring more natural light into their living spaces.

One way that yacht designers are incorporating larger windows is by using high-strength glass materials that can withstand the harsh marine environment. For example, tempered glass or laminated glass with multiple layers can provide the necessary strength and durability to withstand the wind, waves, and impact from flying debris.

In addition to using strong glass materials, yacht designers are also using innovative engineering techniques to maximize the size and placement of windows. Lightweight structural materials such as carbon fiber and titanium in the yacht’s construction, allow for larger windows without compromising the yacht’s structural integrity. In the photo of ANNA, above, the white-painted transverse structural knees are part of a carbon fabrication that strengthens the cabin and carries the mainsheet loads while blending into the classic joinery.

M ulti Functionality and Flex Spaces

karulin yacht design

The design for 68-ft CIRRUS comes from blending 40’s & 50’s era style. The large saloon is designed to provide long-term comfort and versatility with innovative vertical storage and a vaulted ceiling that includes panoramic angled glass as well as overhead skylights. Design by Stephens Waring under construction at Jim Betts Enterprises.

Owners are spending more time aboard their vessels and are adding to the list demands and programmatic needs. These include home-office, fitness centers, gourmet kitchens, and gathering places for family and friends to spend longer durations of time together.

Because space is at a premium on a yacht, designers are creating multi-functional spaces that can serve multiple purposes. For example, a seating area that can be converted into a bed or a dining table that can be lowered to create additional seating. Clever storage solutions are also being incorporated into yacht design to make the most of available space.

Old World Charm Meets Modern Sensibilities: Spirit of Tradition

karulin yacht design

44-ft ITALMUS blends a 1940’s vernacular into the stylistic details and overall aesthetic of the yacht. The interior styling and design is aimed to mirror the era with a theme of highly crafted raised paneling and elegant joinery detail of select quarter sawn mahogany and finished in satin varnis.  Design by Stephens Waring, built by Van Dam Classic Boats. Yacht designers have always had a particular reverence for heritage and history.  The notion of heading out to sea conjures images of bygone eras past.  Capturing that essence requires a balance that avoids becoming kitsch or contrived.  While mid-century design may be considered the hot design trend of 2023, as designers steeped in a Spirit of Tradition design philosophy, we feel we’ve never left the genre.

Spirit of Tradition designs embody some historically identifiable link, particularly expressed in the shape and aesthetic exhibited in the design form of the hull and superstructure. Equally important, a Spirit of Tradition vessel must embrace modern development in materials, construction methods, mechanical systems and naval architecture science. Without the Spirit in development, we’re left with only Tradition.

Natural Materials

karulin yacht design

Douglas fir deck beams, traditional raised and v-groove paneling, bright varnish and white painted surfaces make it a light, airy enclave.  Interior design by Martha Coolidge and Stephens Waring Design.  Boat construction by Lyman-Morse.  Photo credit: Alison Langley

Yacht owners by their very nature are drawn to water and the natural world, so it makes sense to incorporate natural elements such as wood, stone, and other organic materials in design. These materials create a sense of warmth and connect the interior spaces to the natural surroundings.

As experts in wooden boat design, we have long touted the benefits of timber for structural elements.  However, incorporation of hardwoods, as well as a growing trend in sustainable timbers, have become increasingly popular with owners looking to achieve aesthetic, durability, and sustainability objectives in interior design.

Other natural materials such as leather and wool are also being incorporated to add texture and comfort. These finishes not only look beautiful, but they are also durable to withstand the harsh marine environment.

Renovation and Restomods

karulin yacht design

The owner of Marilee (built in 1926) had the bold vision to create an interior that reflected the yacht’s century-long provenance while creating an open space below.  The team worked with Paul Waring of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, to create a traditional and properly constructed interior with an updated layout for relaxed, modern day use. Photo credit: Alison Langley

The popularity of restomods has been well established in the world of classic cars, but it has only recently grown in popularity in the world of yachting. Fortunately, this is changing with plenty of success stories to point to.  Restomods are ideal for owners looking for cost-effective transformations that maintain sentimental connections to vessels and deliver stunning customized spaces that can be more cost effective than new custom builds. They are also popular with owners who inherit family boats, but need more utility and comfort for future generations.

Historical interiors often lack the ergonomics and amenities most owners seek today.  Good restoration projects embrace as much of the original charm and character of the original design as possible while improving comfort and livability.  Upgrades to electrical systems, electronics and navigation, plumbing and propulsion systems are low hanging fruit.  The interior design aesthetics requires a careful and complementary approach which honors the original character while updating comfort, utility, and aesthetics.

Flexible Spaces for a Crew Cabin

karulin yacht design

65-ft ANNA’s design includes a unique pocket door system.  The design provides an easy way to expand square footage when the cabin  is not needed or to private a comfortable extra cabin or crew quarters when extra hands or guests are aboard. Design by Stephens Waring. Construction by Lyman Morse Photo credit: Alison Langley

Owners often struggle with the balance between the desire for a larger vessel with larger interior spaces and the challenge of maintaining a total vessel size (and cost) which is manageable.

As we get older the idea of managing and skippering our own vessel can come at the expense of enjoyment.  Hiring crew alleviates some of the operational challenges and burdens, but it also means sharing interior space with others.

Flexible crew cabins provide a cost effective way to optimize space for when crew is and isn’t aboard. One solution is the installation of pocket doors on sleeping quarters. This converts square footage from private berths (crew quarters) to main salon gathering space when doors are opened and transforms the space to private rooms for guests and crew when needed.

Smart technology

karulin yacht design

Yacht owners are increasingly interested in incorporating smart technology into their vessels. This includes lighting, climate control, entertainment systems, and security features that can be controlled remotely. Smart technology allows yacht owners to control the environment on board and manage energy consumption more efficiently. It also adds an extra layer of security by allowing the owner to monitor their yacht from afar.

Sail Universe

INTERVIEW. David Cherubini: “To build a sailboat is… a family matter”

Members of the Cherubini family have been creating classic yacht designs and bringing them to life with unrivaled craftsmanship since the 1920s. David Cherubini has owned Cherubini Yachts since 2004. He grew up rebuilding pianos with his father, Richard Cherubini, and building yachts with his uncles, brothers and cousins in New Jersey, USA.   We met him.

What does it mean for you to lead a “family” yard?

It means a sense of honor to be able to do this.   It’s not always easy, but I feel as if I am doing my part to preserve our family’s legacy.  When the crew and I build a Cherubini 44 or 48, there’s just nothing like it – especially watching a new family sail away on her.

karulin yacht design

It’s a beautiful feeling, knowing it’s real and right – and a family will enjoy her and be safe. I want to express how grateful I am for my family’s commitment and shared knowledge enabling me to preserve our heritage. Upon stepping ashore after a long passage, my crew and I always feel well cared for. I thank Uncle John, Uncle Frit and other family members and staff for this.

Your sailboats have a great “Motion Comfort” index: how do you get it?

That is a gift from the Gods! My Uncle John Cherubini Sr. was a true master of boat design – sweet lines, long center of lateral resistance, soft hollow curves, strong tumblehome, proper beam to length ratio, lead ballast and a long, powerful keel.

karulin yacht design

The settees and berths are below waterline level, putting our bodies through the water and not on top of it. A 40-foot waterline is imperative to be comfortable in respect to the average crest-to-crest waves of an ocean. Having a low freeboard and sweeping sheer reduces weather exposure and windage where you do not want it.

alliance_cherubini_yacht

At the helm, the captain easily sees over the coach roof and under the sails without having to stand up constantly.  Her hull is balanced beautifully.

karulin yacht design

Long keel is one of your distinguishing marks: what are the advantages?

Stability and comfort in any seaway. Positive directional stability and drive to windward as tight as 34 degrees without losing hull speed. Extra waterline. Shallow draft. And a very powerful driven hull – you can carry a lot of sail area or as little as necessary to be comfortable , maintaining hull speed – for the most part.

How do you combine classic design and modern materials?

We use both to the best of their advantages, assuring safety, comfort, reliability, longevity and that oh, so sumptuous feeling of a true classic yacht of a bygone era.

karulin yacht design

Only the best materials are used in the manufacturing of our boats. The hull is laid up solid, with no core. We use vinyl ester resin instead of the commonplace isotropic polyester resin.

Unlike the previous Cherubini sailboats constructed of wooden decks, cabin sides, coachroofs, and bulwarks, our latest sailboats have a single piece fiberglass part to replace all of that wood.  Taking advantage of today’s technology provides an owner with confidence of durability and longevity , giving them a classic yacht with low maintenance.

Our cockpit and cockpit combings also are solid fiberglass.  On the interior, we still build a super structure of gorgeous, solid Honduran mahogany , which includes deck beams, carlings, cabin sides and gutters.

karulin yacht design

Regarding systems, our last build included only state-of-the-art technologies. This was the first pleasure craft installation of the Yanmar 80hp smokeless commonrail turbo diesel. The 24 volt lithium ion house battery bank provides 1100 amp hours. Its Mastervolt system performs heavenly, quickly charging batteries back to full capacity. The NMEA 2000 electronic systems initially were a bit challenging. Now her owner fully understands this system and what a joy it is!

Her steering control system is second to none. Her rudder post is made of a 3-inch extruded stainless steel tube, bent aft and flattened toward the bottom.

karulin yacht design

This provides a seamless, 100 percent fail-safe steerage system. There are no welded flags to corrode. From the bottom up, our Cherubini solid bronze heel casting seats a super strong independent oilite bronze bushing. This provides enormous strength and flawless reliability.  In all the years of the Cherubini 44 and 48 on the water, none have ever lost their steering. This helps me rest at night.

The new Cherubini 44 is the only sailing yacht known today to commonly exceed more than 1.5 times her designed hull speed of 8.6 knots.

In my opinion, this is the perfect retirement vessel. Because of her long waterline, 4 foot 10 inch shallow draft, she can reach destinations other yachts of this size cannot even dream of.  Her split rig offers many sail plan options to accommodate any weather scenario.  For ease of handling and safety, all sheets and halyards are fairlead back to the cockpit with single-line slab reefing and electric winches.

karulin yacht design

Her classic hull is easily driven in light air. At 10 knots of breeze, it is not uncommon to sail 6.8 knots of hull speed.  As the weather builds, you will feel the confidence and gracefulness of the Cherubini 44.  There are only 35 Cherubini 44s ever built and eight Cherubini 48 schooners.

Ferenc Matte has written about the Cherubini 44 and 48 in “ The World’s Best Sailboats “, and in “From a Bare Hull,” he says: “ The construction is truly first class and the thought and engineering behind nearly every piece is close to remarkable. Perhaps these are today’s ultimate yachts. “

Its because of her technology and classic design that she is a forever beautiful yacht.

I believe this was written by my Uncle Frit , and I think he nailed it on the head: “ She is a romantic yacht, designed to comply with the timeless laws of Neptune, not the fickle racing rules of today. The sweep of her sheer, low freeboard and rake of her spars echo the great clippers and schooners of yesteryear. And on board, every detail is planned and crafted with love and a deep respect for the tradition of the sea. Yet, this is a yacht for today. The latest underbody technology, combined with a powerful and easily handled sail plan, result in a fast, comfortable performance in heavy weather or the lightest summer breezes. “

karulin yacht design

What do you think about “modern” sailboat?

I appreciate their designs and executions for each for each use purpose they provide.   I’ve never really been comfortable during a passage on a modern boat. Their moments just feel unnatural to me. Many modern boats have a tendency to be very beamy and commodious below decks. The large, cavernous cabins and centerline berths are great – dockside; however, in a real sea, and in real life sailing, they have proven dangerous with these large, open spaces.

My feeling is, for what little I know, to stay competitive, modern sailboat manufacturers have had to skinny up on material and sharpen up on technology to create efficiency. Call me old school, but I prefer a lead sled.

Last but not least, our classic final question: what does mean “sailing” for you”?

“Sailing” means arriving at my destination: My Cherubini 44.  Everything else automatically has been left behind. Only opportunity, enchantment and adventure await.

Understanding Yacht Design

A three-part series: Part 1

Filip Sochaj takes us through the complex matrix that lies behind hull configuration, form and stability.

‘I can prove anything by statistics except the truth’ George Canning

In recent years the yachting industry has become very focused on quoting statistics and ratings. While numbers, or algorithms help analyse characteristics or elements of a yacht, so a picture can be built of how the yacht may perform in certain circumstances, none of these statistics alone can be used to evaluate the perfect yacht for blue water cruising. It’s a different story for racing yachts where designers know they have to design a yacht to win, considering the defined racing rules, but a blue water yacht needs many different attributes to qualify for the title ‘perfect blue water yacht’.

Our objective in this article is to explain what the various numbers and the groups of statistics mean and how a prospective yacht owner should interpret these.

The numbers behind yacht design

Many people will have heard of ballast ratios, SA/Disp ratios (sail area to displacement ratio), AVS (angle of vanishing stability), Brewer’s Motion Comfort and STIX to name just five. Some may also know of Cwp (waterplane coefficient), Cb (block coefficient) and Cp (prismatic coefficient).

I realise many others have previously given a description of each of the ratios, be it long or short, but hardly anyone outside the industry’s specific yacht design literature, has tried to explain why they exist, or what they really tell us. I hope to throw some light on them all, so that the numbers generated can be properly understood from a layman’s perspective.

I will discuss, why having a Ballast ratio around 30% is considered to be important and why that is not always the stability indicator it is assumed to be. Why to get Cat.A (ocean class) in CE you need the STIX  value to be at least 32, but an accepted rule of thumb is that the STIX should be at least the yacht length in feet. How, at the same time, a yacht with a STIX of 34 can be a proven ocean going design with the same capability as a yacht of the same length as one with a STIX of 58. Finally, those who are more interested in boat design will know that Cp should be around 0.53-54 for cruising yachts, but why do many boats perform well with a Cp of only 0.6?

It is my belief that there is a difference between knowing and understanding, and it always serves the potential yacht purchaser best to have the latter, especially when things are not as black and white as we would like them to be in a perfect world.

The ratios we will talk about in this series:

  • Ballast ratio
  • SA/Disp and Disp/L ratio
  • Form stability
  • Brewers motion comfort
  • Dellenbaugh angle
  • P.S – VPP, more on moments and why designing a yacht by parametrics is a bad idea.

Ballast Ratio

The first ratio to take on is the ballast ratio. This is simply: how much of the yacht’s overall displacement comes from the ballast.

The general rule is for the yacht to be in the 30%-40% bracket. It is often believed that the higher the ballast ratio the stiffer the boat, this can be true, but not always, because ballast ratio doesn’t account for how the mass is distributed. When looking at what makes the boat heel and what prevents it heeling, we are looking at forces, and forces create moments based on where they act. Simply put, the force of the wind acting on the sail x the height of the sail’s centre of effort is what makes the boat heel. It is then the ballast’s job to counter that. Thanks to gravity, the ballast has a force of its own, but where is it acting from? If it is acting from the bottom of the keel it will have a long lever arm, so the moment will be high, but if it is in the bilge the moment will be much lower.

Therefore we can have a situation where two yachts of the same ballast ratio, say 35%, have extremely different characteristics. This is why, when a boat builder offers a short keel version of a yacht, you should see that he has increased the amount of ballast in it. If he hasn’t, then it should be something to keep in mind. Has the builder adjusted the rig, or is the shallow draft version only available with such interior layout that mitigates the lost righting moment? Or is the intent to accept poorer sailing characteristics for the benefit of lesser draft? You can run round this argument a hundred ways, but it will distill back to the same discussion.

What do you want to do with your yacht?

Another aspect of the ballast ratio which strictly relates to cruising boats is its relation with added load. In most cases the ballast ratio is given when the vessel is empty, known as lightship, to elevate the numbers. Moreover, it is most likely that the yacht is designed to perform optimally in her lightest condition, which makes sense for racers and racer-cruisers. Blue water cruisers or anyone who loads for a longer voyage will never operate at lightship condition. This can mean that a light displacement yacht which was designed to operate at, let’s say, 32% ballast ratio, when loaded with people, gear, fuel, water, and provisions has now got a ballast ratio of 25% or less. On our K50 we allow for 4,000kg of added load. This might seem a lot but it corresponds with the reality of world cruising where sometimes your only chance to get a replacement alternator for your engine is if you took one in the first place. The added weight of the load translates to the ballast ratio in a K50 from 38% at lightship to 32 % at full load, because we have designed the yacht forecasting this load, it doesn’t create a stability issue.

On the extreme end, we have a Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, (also a CE Cat A yacht !), which starts off with a ballast ratio of 24% at lightship, because it only displaces 13,900kg at lightship and relies heavily on form stability. When you add the load, it would need to go off cruising, the ballast ratio will have dropped to less than 18%. Although it’s very low ballast has some compensation from the form stability created by the superwide stern delta shape, it’s still far too low to be considered suitable for blue water cruising.

The main point about ballast ratio, is that as an exclusive statistic it doesn’t tell you much about how the boat will behave. It merely gives you an indication of what to expect in consideration with other statistics. Remember also that ballast ratio only tells you how much lead or steel there is in the keel, but not where it is, which is just as important. On the other hand, when you also know the lightship displacement, with some very quick maths you can determine how well a given yacht will carry a cruising load. This generally means that the heavier the boat is the easier it is to “swallow” the added mass without feeling it.

karulin yacht design

SA/Disp and Disp/L Ratio

Sail Area/Displacement and Displacement/Length Ratios are two more useful numbers used a lot in the yachting industry. They also often serve as bases for more complex analysis so it is important to fully understand what they mean. I have put them together in one section as principally they both have a direct effect on how fast the yacht can go.

Disp/L Ratio

karulin yacht design

This ratio gives an idea of the yacht’s speed potential. The lower the number the more speed potential the yacht has. By looking at the equation it is easy to see that there are two variables, Displacement and Waterline Length. To reduce the D/L we have to increase the denominator or decrease the numerator. The numerator is the displacement and the denominator is the waterline length. If we consider boats of the same length, the denominator will stay the same and our only scope for change is the numerator which is the displacement. This makes sense; lighter boats are generally faster.

Two things to note here:

  • Much like the ballast ratio, the D/L will be affected by the added cruising load. A heavier boat will soak up the added load without much change to its performance.
  • Because the D/L works off the waterline length it is only indicative for when the yacht is sailing vertically or close to vertical. As soon as the yacht heels the length changes and the D/L value changes, too. This is especially true for boats with bigger overhangs and flares. A classic example of this is the J Class yachts which have extreme overhangs, therefore, when comparing yachts it is important to know what shape of hull they are.

For a cruiser specific scenario, we have to consider operating in heavier seas. In such conditions a heavier boat will behave in a more sea-kindly manner to the sailor, as a well “embedded” hull in the water will be more resistant to jumping out of the water and slamming in a seaway. D/L ratio is very well suited for this assessment. Generally speaking anything under 200 is considered to be on the racing side. Adjusting for the harsher conditions out there, 250-350 is where you want to be for a blue water cruiser. To take the K50 as an example, she is sitting at 259 full load, so she sails well but gives none of her seaworthiness away to achieve performance.

karulin yacht design

SA/Disp Ratio

karulin yacht design

This ratio measures the relationship between the sail area and the displacement of the yacht. Just like previous numbers , it is heavily affected by the displacement and, more importantly, the change in displacement between the lightship and full load. Over the years this ratio has seen an upwards trend, these days a well-performing cruiser is looking at a SA/Disp value in the range of 18-22 while, not even 20 years ago, this was still racing boat territory. This is mostly due to the improvements in materials and technology which allows for such boats to be made at a reasonable price. The other reason is that people want to sail fast. The flip side is that a boat with a high SA/Disp will always be more lively and require more skill than a more docile yacht with a lower SA/Disp.

However, as with everything, just having the number is one part of the story. In theory, the SA should be given as an area of the mainsail + 100% of the foretriangle. Unfortunately, manufacturers often quote the whole sail area, including jib or genoa overlaps, to maximise the SA/Disp number. Moreover, you need to look at the actual rig being talked about, is it a high aspect rig with tall sails or is it a shorter mast that makes up the area by means of long foot measurements? For the same surface area, a high aspect sail will be more efficient and generate more lift with a centre of effort closer to the mast. How far is the centre of effort for the sails from the waterline? The higher the centre, the more force from the wind will go into heeling the boat and less into driving it, which in turn, means the ballast must work harder – must be heavier/deeper – to keep her vertical when a gust comes.

All that said, it is always easier to reef than it is to fit a new rig and depending on your sailing style you should still have fun sailing at 8 knots wind speed without the need for the iron topsail (engine).

As a parting note please remember that before you run off to measure how much that extra tin of baked beans will spoil your ballast ratio, again, none of the numbers discussed above have any value when looked at in isolation. They should always be studied together with other data and even then, as a person who is using/buying a boat, they will still mean little without looking at the actual boat!

8 New Yachts Challenging Conventional Boat Design, From Aluminum Day Boats to Solar-Paneled Cruisers

The season’s most interesting launches were put through their paces in the med. here's our take on each..

80 Sunreef Power Eco

Test-driving a car is one thing, but finding the right watercraft is altogether more challenging. This cheat sheet is here to help, the result of first runs on a handful of new releases ranging from Dominator’s 35-foot Midi Ilumen M35 to the 171-foot Baglietto T52. Each was selected not just for being new to market but also for helping to advance the industry in some description, whether through cutting-edge propulsion, more-efficient hull shapes, or forward-looking interior design. Anchors aweigh.

Baglietto T52

karulin yacht design

After stepping aboard Baglietto ’s newest T52 at its yard in La Spezia, Italy, we were instantly taken with the 1,400-square-foot flybridge, reportedly the largest on any 171-footer, connected to the foredeck lounge via a retractable staircase. Also noteworthy: five generously sized social areas across the exterior of the Francesco Paszkowski design. Codesigner Margherita Casprini’s vision for the interior, meanwhile, matches dark-oak floors with a single wood and stone—teak and Botticino marble—for a pared-back aesthetic that’s highlighted by stainless-steel accents and custom furniture.

At sea, the model is distinguished by Baglietto’s first hybrid propulsion system. The boat cruises the harbor at 10 knots with neither generator noise nor engine vibration, though the T52 can transition to full diesel at any time. The two MTU 16V2 engines deliver a 17-knot top speed with a range of about 2,000 nautical miles, but in electric-diesel mode the range extends to 5,500 nautical miles. The T52 can also stay in electric mode at anchor, powering the house systems at 23 kWh for 10 hours.

Dominator Midi Ilumen M35

karulin yacht design

British poet Lord Byron famously declared Montenegro’s fjord-like Bay of Kotor to be the world’s “most beautiful encounter between land and the sea”—an idyllic (and ideal) testing ground for Dominator ’s new $1.3 million Midi Ilumen M35, which the Italian yard designed as a petite doppelgänger for a client’s 90-foot Ilumen 28M. Its billing as a 35-foot “mini-superyacht” sounds pretentious, but the details demonstrate a yacht-like quality: hand-laid teak decks with splashes of mirror-polished stainless steel and a chic reverse-angle windshield.

Likewise, inside the cabin are Astana Gray–marble surfaces and hand-stitched Alcantara bulkheads. But the M35 jettisons any superyacht comparison with its 43 mph top speed, thanks to twin 300 hp Volvo D4 turbo diesels that also propel it to a range of 300 nautical miles at 25 mph. The M35 handles well in moderate seas, the turning precise if a bit light. In all, this Midi is correct to consider itself a maxi.

80 Sunreef Power Eco

karulin yacht design

A legitimate breakthrough in all-electric motoryacht design, the 80 Sunreef Power Eco’s 80-foot by 39-foot dimensions create an airy interior with the usable space of many 100-foot models. Instead of needing to plug in somewhere to recharge, the 80 Eco relies on thin shock-resistant solar panels within the hulls, superstructure, and hardtop—anywhere absorbing sunlight—that replenish the 330 kWh battery banks connected to twin 180 kw motors. The four-cabin cat also has a smart energy-management system to monitor features such as its low-draw air-conditioning.

On the water, it’s pleasant, silent, and slow. At 8 knots, it can run for eight hours, with a range of 64 nautical miles. The top end is 12 knots, though Sunreef was cagey about how long a charge lasts at that speed. “In electric, it’s less about knots and more about watts,” says the captain. For those with range anxiety, Sunreef recently announced the new 77-foot Ultima, a sleeker design with diesel-electric propulsion.

Riva 82 Diva

default

It’s hard to beat running a Riva throttle-down along the French Riviera, which is how we experienced the 82-foot Diva. The model delivers on the brand’s promise of a muscular profile along with a sporty ride—31 mph, with the upgraded 1,900 hp MAN V12s and full load of fuel. (With a light load, it tops out at 35.7 mph.) Despite displacing 85.4 tons, the Diva handles like a day boat, conveying an unmistakable joie de vivre to the upper helm during hard-over turns.

High-gloss Italian wenge gives the interior a contemporary sophistication, but it’s anything but conventional. A mirrored hallway between the staterooms not only enhances natural light but also imparts a playful, fun-house sensibility, and the exterior is all about open space: Foldout platforms widen the stern by 10 feet, while the 430-square-foot flybridge is the largest in its class. There’s even a lounge on the foredeck, which is where we happily retire after finally ceding the helm.

Wallywhy150

26/0/2023, Porto Rotondo (ITA), Wally WHY 150

Wally powerboats tend to be svelte sea creatures, known for their performance and futuristic appearance. The new Wallywhy150 veers sharply from that mold, at least aesthetically, with its extremely wide body. Yet it still manages to reach a top end of 22 knots, laudable for a 79-footer displacing 93.6 tons at a light load.

During our sea trial off the coast of Venice, Italy, two impressions resounded. First, the unusually quiet navigation, even in the aft salon, positioned in proximity to the three Volvo IPS 1350 engines. Second, the innovation of the interior, which features a main suite in the bow with 270-degree wraparound windows. As for the exterior, it’s defined by large spaces for socializing and water sports, including a drop-down transom. In fact, the boat is designed to replicate the experience of a seaside villa, a sensation subtly aided by Humphree stabilizers and a Seakeeper 26 gyro for balance.

Jeanneau NC37 With Hybrid Volvo Penta Drives

karulin yacht design

While the Jeanneau NC37 is a perfectly nice express cruiser, the sea trial I recently ran aboard her in Cannes, France, was much more about the propulsion system than the boat itself. Volvo Penta partnered with the French builder to debut its new hybrid drives as it ventures into the increasingly cluttered electric-propulsion market. This system matches twin 60-kW electric motors to 320-horsepower Volvo Penta D4s. It’s an attempt to have the silence and relatively small ecological footprint of an electric motor paired with the speed and reliability of diesel engines. And it works pretty well. I ran the NC37 at about 5 knots under full electric power as we slalomed out from the Cannes Yachting Festival through the forest of megayachts moored in the Baie de Cannes. When we passed the big boats, I was able to push the throttle forward, and with a satisfying kuh-chunk the diesels automatically engaged once the engines hit 1,500 RPM.

Aided by the electric motors, the Jeanneau ripped forward going from 6 to 30 knots in 13 seconds before maxing out at 33—the acceleration was powerful enough that I felt G forces pinning my back to the helm seat. The hull also sliced easily through the whitecaps caused by early morning gusts. Out in the bay, on the leeward side of a protective island, I tossed the boat into idle to see what the electrically powered joystick could do. For me, this was the highlight of the new hybrid package. It turns out the electricity gives the joystick real oomph, with a faster response time and a more muscular feel than you get with the regular Volvo joystick controls. These traits will make slow-speed maneuverability and docking much easier, taking the stress out of running in crowded marinas, often with tidal currents and wind to make docking even more challenging. The bottom line of this collaboration? It is the first time a hybrid installation has been accomplished by integrating all systems, and whenever this boat comes to market, everything will be covered under a single warranty. Boaters, especially newbies, will also feel more comfortable as captains of their own vessels, while the boats will have a smaller carbon footprint.

Bekkers Azur 45HT

karulin yacht design

Bekkers is a brand-new boatbuilder hailing from Holland that debuted its very first hull, the 45HT, at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival. Taking aim at some of the most acclaimed dayboat makers in the world, the new 45-footer is built out of aluminum, so both the exterior and exterior can take different forms during the customization process. That’s important because customers in this bracket demand customization. The boat displays quality fit and finish throughout, from the stainless steel accents to the leather-wrapped steering wheel. There is also a nice sense of proportion on the upper deck and down below in the cabin. On our sea trial, the 45HT offered solid and controlled turns, while the hull gripped the water’s surface despite swells that growing swells. The sightlines from the helm were tight, though, and the hardtop seemed like it was too low. I needed to duck down to see out the sides when making turns. I also thought the boat was a bit underpowered with twin 440-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600s, with a top speed of 27 knots. I walked away from the Bekkers with the sense that the bones are here for another respectable entry into the Dutch dayboat market, but there is room for improvement.

Heesen Ultra G

karulin yacht design

Ultra G, the 197-footer from Heesen Yachts, is a hybrid in multiple senses. The boat has an aft fishing center near the stern, 22,000-hp engines for a top speed of 37 knots. “The most horsepower of any Heesen ever built,” says the captain, who asked to remain anonymous, during a tour at the builder’s facilities in the Netherlands.

The raw speed and fishing amenities on what is a luxury superyacht are unusual design trends, but there are also noteworthy features across the interior, which comes courtesy of UK design firm Harrison Eidsgaard. Natural woods, layered lighting, and a palette of grays, golds and greens are certainly different than the masculine exterior. The full-beam salon and a glass-topped atrium are certainly highlights, as is the upper-deck lounge fitted with DJ decks, powerful speakers and disco lights.

While many areas carry a wow factor, the media room is one of the most functional areas on Ultra G. Located just off the main salon, it has large windows for natural light and rows of sofas facing towards a wall which is actually a screen—and a giant one at that. “It’s called ‘Samsung The Wall’,” says the captain. “You can choose to have three different things on display or watch something across the whole screen.”

Unlike many onboard cinemas, the media room was designed for film screenings. It’s also for real-life viewing, gaming and even fishing. “We put a 180-degree camera on the bow and so when you’re sitting here looking out on the horizon, you basically maintain a 180-degree view with the side windows and what’s in front of you on the screen,” the captain says.

The room also has a poker table and game consoles—four PlayStation 5s, two karaoke systems, one Xbox, and six fish finders—are hooked up to the Wall. The fish finders display real-time footage from underwater cameras, which also stream to the fisherman’s lounge in the aft of the yacht. So, guests could be watching a favorite movie while keeping eyes on where the yacht is sailing, and their fishing rods, all at the same time.

The media room, and many other spaces throughout the yacht, is also kitted out with powerful CAT speakers, priced at over $20,000 a pair. “They’re the crème de la crème of speakers—they’re there when you go into Beyoncé’s house,” the captain says.

Silenzio Explorer Yacht deck

Updated on February 17th, 2024

When it comes to new superyacht concepts, we tend to flip through the pictures sent to us without enthusiasm, incredulous about the numbers in the specifications and surprised by the many ridiculous and completely useless elements that designers do not hesitate to use liberally in the architecture of the hull and superstructures. What to do, such is the trend for any extravagant junk.

However, you can stand out not only with gaudy concepts, but also with really good designs of research yachts. For some of them, you can safely turn to Baran Akalin, whose works have deservedly become winners in various categories more than once. This is not surprising, given his experience and unconventional design approaches, which allow him to create unique concepts that stand out for their thoughtfulness in every detail.

We particularly liked two 67m electric yachts with H2 generators, which have an estimated range of up to 14,000 nautical miles: Silenzio and Silencieux. Both yachts are identical in performance, but Silencieux is an ice class superyacht.

Silencieux Explorer Ice Yacht

Spacious decks and stylish superstructures with panoramic windows will definitely contribute to an unforgettable cruise, no matter where in the world you find yourself. The projects were made in collaboration with Manta Aircraft, so you can see amazing personal vertical takeoff aircraft on the helipads.

Silenzio Yacht

Both yachts have huge 170m² garages that can fit a 12m tender, loads of toys and even a submarine, in this case from U-Boat Worx. Living quarters also stand out for their area: in particular, the main saloon is spread over as much as 200 m², and the owner’s cabin has an area of 80 m².

Silencieux Ice Yacht

As befits research yachts, the combination of steel and aluminum will ensure their reliability, which is of course most relevant for Silencieux, whose typical habitat will be circumpolar regions. In electric mode, these unique yachts will be able to stay at anchor for up to 3 weeks. Hydrogen generators are used to recharge batteries with a total capacity of 11.4 MW.

Silencieux Explorer Yacht

We love Silenzio’s purposefulness and Silencieux’s rugged looks. Both yachts are finished in design and showcase the beauty of functional boats. Despite the fact that explorer yachts today have an upward trend in popularity, there are not so many really beautiful boats of this type. Well, now you know about two more of them.

Behind The Flare: History Of The Custom Carolina

In the years following WWII, backyard boat builders along the shores of the Carolinas began crafting a new breed of boats, one with a very distinctive design that would be tested and prove true in the rough waters of the Atlantic. The build quality was so well-thought out that even today, you will see these style boats especially in the coastal waters of the Carolinas and Florida.

Today we will explore the history of the custom Carolina and discover what makes this design so seaworthy. Who knows – you just may discover that the Carolina is the right style boat for you.

Recognizing the Custom Carolina Design

Once you know what to look for, you will easily be able to pick out custom Carolina when you see her.

Custom Carolinas feature a huge bow with extreme flare. They have a broken sheer line that steps down where both the cockpit and the cabin meet.

Carolina built hulls tend to have a shallower draft with a sharp entry. Looking aft from the bow of the boat, you’ll note a sharp, deep V-hull design that smoothly transitions to a shallower and modified-V or sometimes a flat hull as you go aft. Running aft along the side of the boat, you’ll then notice the flare of the bow is smoothly replaced with tumblehome .

Carolinas are usually cold molded or plank on frame making them much lighter than solid glass hulls. This in turn helps with top speed and allows for less draft. These techniques are more expensive to build and require many more man hours than a typical hull that gets popped out of a mold.

Seaworthiness

Carolinas have 3 key features that are the secret to their seaworthiness:

The Deep/Sharp V

The deep-V design up front allows the boat to slice through head waves allowing for a smoother wave cut and less pounding or “bashing.”

Carolinas have a distinctively large bow. This again helps with rough sea states. Having lots of free board up front means you can take on larger wave action and handle more green water.

Prominent Flare (bow)

From the waterline going up at the bow, the Carolinas’ freeboard starts as a deep-V which then transitions to a noticeable flare toward the horizontal aspect as it reaches the gunwale. This keeps the topsides dry as it deflects the waves as they crash under the bow.

North Carolina’s sportfishing can be traced back to commercial fishing boats of the late 1800s. Sport fishers grew directly out of the commercial fishing boat line-up. Fisherman would remove the nets from the cockpit of their fishing boats while doing charters in the summer. They would then add some chairs for their customers.

The predecessor to the Carolinas where the Core Sound fishing/work boat. Carolina boat builders would soon emerge out of this need for sport fishing in the 1950’s basing their designs around the Core Sound boat.

The Florida Connection

Starting in the 1930s, just off the Florida coast in such places as Cuba, Bimini and Cat Cay, marlin and tuna were being caught in large numbers by fisherman like Ernest Hemingway and Habana Joe. Hemingway spent a lot of time on his boat Pilar during this period of his life both for big game fishing and escaping the pressures of life.

Word spread quickly about this new sport called “big game” fishing. Boats back then weren’t equipped to handle the big fish. Ennis Merritt is one such individual who started to build the Carolina style boat in the mid-50s. He left Long Island and bought acreage in Pompano, Florida where he started building boats with his company Merritt Boat and Engine Works. His 37 sport fishers became very famous. Of the 13 original 37 footers Merritt built, 12 still survive today.

Some Legendary Names in Carolina Style Boat Building

  • Buddy Davis (Carson R. “buddy Davis Jr.): Davis built over 350 boats. He incorporated many contemporary design innovations and construction techniques. He brought “yacht finishes” to the sport fishing boat line up.
  • Sunny Briggs (Thomas H Briggs, III): Sunny was taught a lot about fishing starting as a mate when he was 12 years old. He later captained for Omie Tillett then started building his own boats in the winter while fishing in the summer. Years later, Sunny went on to open Briggs Boatworks in Wanchese, NC in 1985.
  • Omie Tillet : Omie was frequently found on the water working with his father since he was 10 years old. He then ran his dad’s boat at 20 and then partnered with Warren O’Neal to start building boats at the age of 31. His first boat was inspired by John Rybovich who made fishing boats after WWII. Omie and O’Neal were legends because they thought outside the box with radical new ideas.
  • Paul Spencer : Paul got his start as a mate when he was 12. He later got his Captain’s license and started fishing charters and tournaments. He went into boat building in 1996 and to this day he has remained very progressive about his boat building.
  • Craig Blackwell : Craig started in Michigan. He learned about resin work with Gougeon Brothers who developed West System Resin. He lived in Florida for a while where he perfected his art of building jigs. He later moved to North Carolina where he worked for Buddy Davis. In 1986 Craig started his own business Blackwell Boatworks . He’s now built over 60 sportfishing boats.
  • Ritchie Howell :   Ritchie Howell grew up on the water in the Wanashe area and spent a lot of time ferrying boats up and the down the coast when he was young. He runs a smaller but very successful boat yard and oversees every detail in his boatbuilding.
  • Captain “Buddy” Cannady : “Captain BC” was a very well-known sport fisher builder in North Carolina with over 30 boat builds to his name. He was also named the world’s fastest boat builder. He began this journey in 1954 when he bought his first boat, a charter boat named Snot . He too started building boats in the winter so that he could charter during the summer. He worked alongside Warren O’Neal. Buddy Davis and Canady teamed up in 1973 to build a charter boat named Capt. B.C. Cannady. Then in 1974, Captain BC opened Cannady Boatworks and built in his backyard. He remains a legend in both charter fishing and boat building.
  • John Bayliss : Like so many others, John started his on the water career as a young mate, then as a captain running his charters. He worked with Hatteras until the traveling and being away from family became too much of a strain with over 200 days a year away from home. He stood up Bayliss Boatworks and started building his own boats in 2002.

The Take Away

If you are serious about sport fishing, a Carolina Style boat may be the right choice for you. With years of refinements, boatyards have been taking what works and simply making it better. Some of the legendary names were mentioned above but there are lots more that should be given credit to for this battlewagon’s style and function.

Now that you know why they look the way they do, is a Custom Carolina in your future?

The 38m Pinisi AMANDIRA pictured above has been featured in many yachting magazines as well as Architectural Digest.  Our 36m Pinisi Silolona has has won accolades in SE Asia Yachting as the best newly built sailing yacht in Asia in 2004, the year of her launch; and has achieved cameo appearances in Vogue magazine, the New York Times; La Figueroa, Time magazine, plus many yachting magazines.

50m Indonesian Sailing Pinisi - The 36m Silolona was the inspiration for this much larger Charter Pinisi.. At 50m (164 feet) there is ample room for luxury chartering throughout Indonesia with occasional forays to Malaysia, Thailand, the Andaman Islands and the Maldives. Designed to the structural standards of Germanischer Lloyds, this vessel will offer superior security, luxury and comfort. For more information about this design or other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire .

38m Sailing Pinisi, AMANDIRA  - A 38 meter (125 foot) luxury wooden sailing yacht for occasional chartering, having deluxe accommodations for the owner, private staterooms for 8 additional guests, plus accommodation for 14 crew including dive master and guide. Designed to the standards of Germanischer Lloyd's for maximum safety and longevity. To be built in Kalimantan Timur (East Borneo). For more information about this design or other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire . Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

36m KLM, DUNIA BARU - A 36 meter (120 foot) luxury wooden yacht. This design is inspired by the present-day traditional Indonesian KLM types (motor sailors). Designed to the standards of Germanischer Lloyd's for maximum safety and longevity, and built in Kalimantan Timur (East Borneo). For more information about this design or other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire . Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

36m Pinisi, SILOLONA - Pictured above, the traditionally built Silolona , a wooden Indonesian Pinisi , measuring 36 meters (118 feet) on deck, was built in Kalimantan Selatan (South Borneo) for chartering throughout Indonesia. The intent of this design has been to provide a taste of traveling aboard a traditional sailing Bugis Pinisi, complete with Indonesian crew. Designed and built to the structural standards of the German Lloyd's rule, there is a generous measure of security, luxury and comfort for eight to sixteen charter guests (depending on which interior layout is preferred). For more information about this design or other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire . Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

36m Tern Schooner - A 36 meter (118') deluxe wooden sailing yacht. The interior is very open, yet will accommodate two owners, eight guests or family members, and four crew. Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

30m Pinisi, SI DATU BUA - Our original 36m Pinisi design has been an inspiration for a series of design studies, each of which share the same traditional aesthetic of the wooden Indonesian Sailing Pinisi. This smaller 30m (98 foot) version is intended for private use and occasional chartering throughout Indonesia. Designed to the structural standards of the Germanischer Lloyds, this vessel will offer superior security, luxury and comfort. For more information about this design or other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire . Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

30m Indonesian KLM - This 30 meter (98 foot) luxury wooden yacht is modeled after the present-day traditional Indonesian Kapal Layar Mesin . Literally translated, this means "boat-sail-machine." Although we would call this a "Motor Sailor" these craft are simply referred to in Indonesia as " KLM ." The concept here has been to create a private yacht that can also be chartered, and which has deluxe accommodations for the owner and guests, plus generous cabins for crew. For more information about this design or our other traditional wooden vessels, please inquire . Please also see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Zebulun 96 - Zebulun is a modern sailing yacht in all respects. Intended for fast all-ocean sailing. All aluminum construction; twin fin keels with ballast bulbs; twin rudders; three masts; fully battened sails; etc. The ultimate charter vessel, having nine private staterooms, for a capacity of 18 to 20 all together. Equally capable as a motor sailor or pure sailing vessel. Very impressive!  Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Mermaid 61  - A classic Brigantine styled after the 1700's privateers. Planned for commercial use, there is a flexible-use space just forward of amidships that can be used as a 5 ton cargo hold, or a large workshop, as a twin cabin for charters, or as a general use cabin or dining hall for day charters or boutique cuisine evening cruises. Mermaid combines modern materials and a modern hull form with a traditional Brigantine styling that is true to its heritage even down to the carvings. For example, all aluminum or all steel hull construction with all aluminum spars and modern rigging materials. Please see our Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices. For more information, please inquire .

Shiraz 56 - A a fast aluminum sailing yacht with classic styling in the Herreshoff tradition. Fully detailed for construction in aluminum complete with NC cutting files. Conceived as a motor sailor , with the emphasis on sailing performance. Two separate staterooms, large saloon and galley, even a bath tub! From the shelter of the 'midship cockpit one can watch other vessels fall astern as though they were tied to a coral head... Aluminum spars; ketch rig. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Lucille 50 - This vessel is in my view a proper motor sailor ! Lucille has a true pilot house, a real walk-in engine room, and private cabins for four. There are two versions, one having the wheel house aft, the other with the house amidships. Lucille has a rounded hull and very clean lines suited to steel or aluminum. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Aluminum spars, schooner rig. Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Many more sailing yacht concept designs can be found on our Prototypes web page.

Mid-Size Sailing Yachts

Jasmine 48  - An all aluminum junk rigged schooner - and a highly capable motor sailor as well! The request here was to design a blue water schooner with an easy to handle rig, a spacious interior and classic styling, then apply modern technology to all of that...! In this case all aluminum structure, free standing rig, electric motor propulsion, and a very comfortable interior. A rounded hull for construction in aluminum. Recently updated to include the concept of having a pilot house aft. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Redpath 44 - I designed Redpath for myself. Enough said. In my view she is simply beautiful. The idea was to create a simple and comfortable live aboard schooner for two. When left to my own devices, herein lies much of my preferred design approach. Though designed as an auxiliary sail boat, Redpath is also a true motor sailor . Aluminum spars, schooner rig. Hull construction in steel. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Redpath 44 - Okay, why is Redpath listed twice here...? We recently completed a conversion of the Redpath design to aluminum construction, including aluminum spars. We also completed new NC cutting files for aluminum construction (imperial dimensions). If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Highland Lass 42 - Grace's big sister. A classic rig on the finest of single chine hull forms intended for steel or aluminum construction. Designed for performance cruising. Comfort for four. Luxury for two. Aluminum spars, schooner rig. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Benrogin 40 - A transom-stern rounded hull and clean lines ideally suited to steel, aluminum, fiberglass or plank on frame wood construction. Intended for family cruising. Two versions: one with a wooden deck for luxury, the other having a metal deck for simplicity and ultimate strength. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Greybeard 38 - A variation on Fantom. More displacement with a different interior and a slightly different look. Every bit the boat to live up to her name. With a rounded hull and easy lines Greybeard is ideally suited to steel or aluminum. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Aluminum spars, cutter rig. Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Fantom 36 - A round bottom double ended cutter in the Archer tradition. With a rounded hull and easy lines Fantom is ideally suited to steel or aluminum. This boat was designed for ultimate conditions with the intent to make the Northwest Passage. Aluminum spars, cutter rig. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Grace 36 - Can a metal boat have grace? Absolutely yes! One of the prettiest metal boats afloat, and a very easy shape to build. Designed for ocean voyaging in style. Aluminum spars, ketch rig. Hull construction in steel or aluminum. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Many more sailing yacht concept designs can be found on our Prototypes web page.

Pocket Size Sailing Yachts

The 23' Pocket Cutter - SARAH CAT

Bedouin 28 - An excellent bilge keel yacht, the big sister to Sarah Cat. Trailerable and ocean worthy. Aluminum spars, cutter rig. Hull construction in aluminum. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Preliminary drawing available; please inquire .

Sarah Cat 23 - A centerboard boat with a classic fantail stern. Tabernacle mast for easy trailering. The most economical of cruising boats. Aluminum spars, cutter rig. Hull construction in aluminum. If re-designed, wood or fiberglass are also possible (with substantial revisions to the plans). Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

Larger and smaller preliminary designs in this size range can be found on our Prototypes web page.

Yacht Tenders

The Pram - The pram hull form has the most carrying ability within the least length. Being flat bottom, these sailing prams take the beach gracefully, and they are easily stowed. Sizes range from 8' to 14' with construction in aluminum, plywood or fiberglass. Please see the Plans List Page for a summary of Plan prices.

The emerging yachting designers making waves

From new faces making their breakout entrance into yacht design to land-based designers turning their attention to yachts, there has been plenty of fresh talent in the industry over the past year. BOAT introduces the designers and studios defining today's yachting landscape, each with its own expressive and distinctive identity.

Name: Phathom Studio Founding year: 2019 Notable styles: What has become apparent in the fledgling Dutch studio's portfolio is its use of glass to enhance natural light – as seen on the studio's first on-the-water project, Gulf Craft's Majesty 111 , where it broke with the shipyard's usual design language. Sitting below a glass-floored dip pool, the owner's cabin is bathed in light, while the main and lower deck benefit from a glass and Perspex central staircase below a skylight. Later this year, Phathom teamed up with Greek shipyard Golden Yachts on the 65-metre concept Vesper, where similar codes have surfaced. The inclusion of a multi-storey light column will provide interior decks with natural sunlight from the upper deck, while an oversized infinity-edge pool will be divided by a "glass wall with a pool bar that connects swimmers to guests in the beach club".

Name: Valentina Zannier Founding year: 2023 Notable styles: Zannier boasts an impressive portfolio of yacht designs in collaboration with Nuvolari Lenard , not least the intricate interiors of Ahpo , but her solo venture has propelled her into a new era. This starts with an impressive full-custom interior on the 85-metre Project Oro , which is designed to "give the impression of a precious jewel" – brought to life with natural materials, a warm colour palette and "pure, ancestral shapes and motifs".

Name: Joseph Dirand Founding year: 1999 Notable styles: Established Paris-based architect Joseph Dirand branched out into the yachting world with the interior layout and design on the first 26-metre Otam 85 GTS Cara Montana . More recently, he is credited for the interior and exterior design of Liva O , the new 118.2-metre Abeking & Rasmussen  flagship. He wanted the outdoor space to  "be immersive with the surrounding landscape" – best showcased with the black hull. There's also a swimming pool with a raisable floor which can be covered by a sheet of "liquid marble".

Name: Burdifilek Founding year: 1993 Notable styles: The masterminds behind Canadian studio Burdifilek, Diego Burdi and Paul Filek, are critically-acclaimed designers who recently turned their attention to the 60-metre   Amels superyacht Entourage . With a more pared-back design philosophy, the studio hid all the functionality right down to the bars, which are enclosed inside cabinets that match the surrounding walls. It is only upon opening them that the beautifully lit lacquered walls are revealed. Burdifilek embraced the marine language with a colour palette "unique to the owners" and everything customised to the point where artisans offered 14 samples of the custom greyish veneer to achieve the right finish and to oppose the "more is more" aesthetic.

Name: M2 Atelier Founding year: 2011 Notable styles: Milan-based firm M2 Atelier worked on Poland's largest superyacht, 44.2-metre Ace , where they focused on a “less is enough'' philosophy, seen in the limited materials chosen – including teak wood, Lasa marble, grey leather, light-coloured fabrics and dark metal accents. The result is a muted, calm colour palette and design choices to create the feeling of space. In the main saloon, three sofas are designed to give the illusion they are being suspended above the ground, in much the same way the master suite is home to a king-size bed with suspended bedside tables.

Name : Unique Yacht Design Founding year : 2010 Notable styles : With years of experience under its belt, Unique Yacht Design has a multi-functional and adaptable approach. The Turkish studio completed the exterior design and naval architecture on the 80-metre Bilgin Leona , where a striking red hull meets a gleaming “Snow White” superstructure. Unique Yacht Design founder Emrecan Özgün explains they also "opted for a fashion plate, contributing to her unique aesthetic".

Name : Red Yacht Design Founding year: 2017 Notable styles : With its involvement of 26-metre Edge , Red Yacht Design took cues from explorers or sports utility boats but "made it sporty and appealing to young people". She boasts a distinctive “Porsche Guards red” hull and the studio took a holistic approach to the the design with nature-inspired cues on the interior. More recently, it has conceived the 40-metre sporty superyacht Aisha , with delivery expected in 2024. The nine-month design phase was outlined by an owner who wanted "substantial interior volume" without compromising on performance. The studio responded with a raised pilothouse, a wide 9.1-metre beam and an open aft deck with unfolding bulwarks.

Name: Andreas Martin-Löf Founding year: 2008 - 2009 Notable styles: Showcasing his first yacht project, Stockholm-based designer Andreas Martin-Löf applied his signature minimalist style to the interior of the 33.5-metre Baltic Yachts Zemi . He created a muted colour scheme on board and paid particular attention to warm, integrated lighting with 'lanterns' made of Japanese rice paper. The designer also considered weight-saving factors and bonded lightweight warm walnut and limestone veneers to lightweight honeycomb structures.

Julian Everitt

Julian Everitt Yacht Design drew its first design in 1966 - an interior, deck plan and sail plan for an existing production sailboat called the Sea King, designed by Charles Violet. This was followed by one off half tonner to the RORC rule, called Reverse. The first production design (original) the Banham 29 was drawn in 1970 to the new International Offshore Rule (IOR). Nine of these Half Ton sized boats were built in the early days of IOR. Lifting keels, which have become something of a speciality to our portfolio, were first introduced in 1969 in our steel built 44ft ketch Rolling Stone, but our first production design to feature a fully retracting keel was the Saltern 37.5 - a heavy displacement sloop rigged grp cruiser built in 1972. Many sailboats, both production and one off have followed in the ensuing years, built either to cruise the oceans of the world or race under a vast array of rating and handicap rules across the globe. We are proud also to have pioneered the concept of an International Offshore One Design, the E Boat, built to a truly global rule as well as exacting One Design rules that have withstood the test of time. While yacht design is the passion that fired the business, much of the fuel, over the years, has come from both one off and production power yachts as well as highly successful industrial projects with partners such as Thule Group, who have sold well over 3 million products to our design around the world. We will, hopefully, continue to innovate with our projects and look forward to a hybrid era of construction, design, engineering and concepts. An ultra modern super yacht

Built under codename Orchid, Lady Lara has a full displacement hull, aluminium superstructure and a 14.35 metre beam. Exterior and interior design comes from the boards of Reymond Langton Design, a decision influenced by the desire to create a harmonious balance between spaces inside and out.

Generous exterior decks offer range of options for guests to enjoy, from sun-drenched, open entertainment areas to more sheltered, intimate formal spaces.

Information about Lady Lara

Sweeping, sculpted curves give Lady Lara a feminine elegance and the interior reportedly flows just as sinuously. Lady Lara is a private yacht and following her maiden voyage to Norway, she headed to Florida, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean islands for the winter season.

Lady Lara features a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

This luxury yacht is also fitted with ‘zero speed stabilizers’ which work at anchor, increasing on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

  • By Yachting Staff
  • January 9, 2024

Lürssen Lady Lara

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

Lürssen Lady Lara

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

Lürssen Lady Lara

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

Lürssen Lady Lara

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

Okhotny Ryad station in 1954 and Prospekt Marksa in 1986.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
