The 70.6m (231.4ft) FORCE BLUE is an all-steel explorer yacht built to Lloyd’s classification and MCA compliance and delivered in 2002 by Danish shipyard Royal Denship.

Last refitted in 2022, this 1,325GT conversion expedition yacht, which has exterior design by H2 Yacht Design and interiors by Michele Bonan. Guest spaces feature spacious lounges, expansive deck spaces and impressive entertainment areas including a cinema and a very large bridge deck bar, BBQ and dining area that converts into a disco.

She accommodates up to 12 guests in six spacious suites. These include an owner’s suite on a dedicated owner’s deck as well as a full-beam VIP suite on the lower deck. An elevator serves all guest decks for multi-generational access and the foredeck is home to three 8-9m (26.2-29.5ft) tenders and assorted watertoys.

FORCE BLUE’s extensive wellbeing facilities include a lower deck spa, sauna, massage room and beauty salon and a well-equipped gym, as well as a sun deck jacuzzi.

Main, owner’s and bridge decks all have walkaround sidedecks to help guests appreciate their surroundings. Inside on the main deck there is a saloon, a less formal lounge area and a separate formal dining room, with a large open-air lounge on the main deck aft.

The owner’s lounge has wonderful views through full-height windows, three separate seating areas and a private terrace with banquette seating.

Twin 1,850hp Caterpillar engines give her a top speed of 16 knots, a cruising speed of 14 knots and a remarkable range of 8,000nm.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2002, Force Blue offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 suites comprising a master suite, one VIP cabin, three double cabins and one twin cabin. There are 7 beds in total, including 2 king, 3 queen and 2 singles. Excellent service is guaranteed, with twenty-one crew members on board to look after your every need.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

You and your guests can enjoy a variety of experiences on Force Blue, particularly a dancefloor where you and your guests can celebrate in style. The yacht's library is a beautiful addition to her range of leisure facilities, and acts as a lovely spot for relaxing or browsing. You can recreate the full cinema experience while at sea with the included movie theatre and the steam room is great for your skin and a perfect place to unwind. Visit the sauna and disconnect in peace and quiet or kick back and relax in the well-appointed spa. Maintain your fitness routine and work out in the well-equipped gym and in addition retreat to the deck jacuzzi and soak up the scenery.

Whatever your activities on your charter, you'll find some impressive features are seamlessly integrated to help you, particularly wheelchair-friendly access, making this vessel suitable for all guests. Travelling from deck to deck is quick, easy and accessible with the on-board elevator and stay connected to the outside world on long voyages with satellite communications. With Wi-Fi connectivity you don't have to lose contact with the outside world, unless you want to or you can stay comfortable on board whatever the weather, with air conditioning during your charter.

Performance & Range

Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she offers greater on-board space and is more stable when at anchor thanks to her full-displacement hull. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines, she comfortably cruises at 14 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 11,456 nautical miles from her 170,400 litre fuel tanks at 10 knots. An on board stabilization system ensures comfort when underway.

When not cruising Force Blue has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Guests can feel the wind in their hair and jump the waves on one of the three SeaDoo GTI SE 170 OC 20 Int WaveRunners. Also there are towable toys offering fun and adventure. Additionally, there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. If that isn't enough Force Blue also features scuba diving equipment, a seabob, wakeboards, beach games and paddleboards. When it comes to Tenders, Force Blue has you covered - with three tenders, including a 8.5m/27'11" Bat Tender.

New and Improved Royal Denship ‘Force Blue’

How do you improve a 20-year-old yacht that continues to be a perennial favorite on the charter market?

That was the question facing the owners of Force Blue , which was 206 feet length overall when Royal Denship delivered it in 2002. The yacht is now 229 feet long and has a redesigned exterior, a swim platform extension to create a beach club, a redesigned main deck aft and refurbished staterooms.

“The whole stern of the yacht is redefined, creating an exceptional open lounging and sunbathing area at sea level,” says Daniela De Marco, Fraser’s head of charter management in Europe. “This fantastic new space connects directly to the yacht’s well-being area to offer an incredible space for relaxation and pampering, and also offers direct access to the water to jump straight from treatment to the sea.”

That well-being area has long been a calling card for Force Blue , which had an oversized spa long before it became common practice to incorporate them into superyacht designs. There’s a dedicated masseuse and beautician on board, and the well-being area includes a steam shower, hammam, mud bath, sauna, hot tub, hydro massage, massage room and hairdressing salon. The space is in addition to the onboard gymnasium, which has a treadmill, a Power Plate, a stationary bicycle, a Kinesis gym machine, a leg press, free weights and more—should guests tire of being outside with the Flyboard, hoverboard, paddleboards, scuba gear and various other water toys.

Force Blue also has a rare ratio of 12 guests to 21 crew, who, De Marco says, are “always going the extra mile to exceed the guests’ expectations.”

The Big Booking: Eight Weeks of Onboard Relaxation

This past summer, Force Blue completed an eight-week charter for clients, who, according to management company Fraser , are already talking about booking the yacht again for another vacation. Fraser has managed the yacht since 2005, keeping it in the fleet through several owners. Unlike some yachts that occasionally charter, it’s a priority aboard Force Blue to secure charter bookings. The yacht alternates seasons between the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Key Bridge Was Also Hit by a Ship in 1980, With Limited Damage

That year, a cargo vessel moving at about the same speed as the Dali hit the structure after losing control. But such ships were smaller then.

The massive cargo ship that lost control and slammed into a major Baltimore bridge on Tuesday was not the first to do so. The same bridge was also hit by a wayward cargo vessel in 1980.

On Aug. 29 of that year, a container ship named the Blue Nagoya drifted into a pier that supported the structure, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, after losing control about 1,800 feet away, according to a 1983 report by the U.S. National Research Council.

When the Blue Nagoya hit the Key Bridge, it destroyed some protective concrete, yet did not topple the structure. So what was different this time?

The two vessels were traveling at roughly the same speed. The Blue Nagoya was moving at about six knots, or nearly seven miles per hour, when it made impact. The ship that hit the Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, the Dali, had been clocked at just under seven knots, the National Transportation Safety Board said on Wednesday .

The full story of how and why the 1.6-mile-long bridge collapsed could be years away. Investigators were still collecting evidence at the site on Wednesday.

For now, structural engineers have said that no bridge would have been able to withstand that kind of direct hit from a cargo ship weighing 95,000 tons, as the Dali did. But they have also noted that the bridge had no obvious protective barriers that might have redirected or prevented a ship from crashing into its piers in the first place.

So-called impact protection devices have been common in the industry ever since a freighter hit a support column of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Fla., in 1980, collapsing the structure and killing 35 people. But the Key Bridge opened in 1977.

Other experts say that because the size and weight of cargo vessels have significantly increased since the 1970s, vessels like the Dali are generally more dangerous to bridges than the Blue Nagoya would have been.

The National Research Council report did not specify how heavy the Blue Nagoya was when it hit the Key Bridge in 1980. Amar Khennane, a researcher at the School of Engineering and Technology at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, Australia, said in an email that the Dali appeared to be “notably larger and heavier than the one involved in the 1980 incident, with proportions three times greater.”

Vessels weighing up to 100,000 tons “can have a catastrophic effect on piers if there is a lack of protection against impact,” Raffaele De Risi, a civil engineer at the University of Bristol in England, said in a statement .

Benjamin W. Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, told Scientific American this week that the accident would most likely hold lessons for protecting bridge support structures from shipping traffic.

“If you look at the size of the ships from the 1970s, when the bridge was built, to now, it’s radically changed,” Professor Schafer told the magazine.
