Nancy – US 60 is one of Olin Stephen’s very special 6 Metres, perhaps Nancy is most important, being the boat that Olin helmed himself during the 1932 British American Team race, which the Americans won!

Nancy was lovingly restored by Bill Green in early 2004 and since then she has been kept in impeccable condition, her current owner has kept her works schedule high including replacing 30 frames, adding extra mast strengthening and painting her topsides in 2017.

Winner of many trophies over the years, today Nancy can be found with an incredible inventory of sails, 3 spars (2 aluminium and 1 wood), a long distance MAN truck for European events.

Nancy – US 60 was designed by Olin Stephens and built in 1932 by the Nevins Yacht Yard Inc. She was originally commissioned for three members of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club of Oyster bay to take part in the British American Team Race to be held in Cowes in 1932.

The three owners of Nancy, who were all struggling after the Wall Street crash of 1929 (known as the Great Crash), invited Olin Stephens to take the helm of the Nancy during the 1932 British American Team Race where Olin’s two other designs, Bob Kat II and Jill, would join them alongside Lucie which was a Clinton Crane designed 6.

It is noted that the team arrived in England three weeks prior to the match race and spent much time practicing in the Solent, they all got a great fright on one day when all four boats ended up high and dry on the Brambles Bank!

After the American Team won the match race in 1932, Nancy stayed in the UK and as the owners were still struggling financially, they decided to sell Nancy to the first buyer, who was Harold Edwards from Scotland. Nancy was transported to her new Scottish home and was renamed Dragon.

1936 saw the 6 Metre Class come to life on the Solent and Harold transported Dragon (Nancy) down to take part in the Solent and Burnham on-Crouch regattas, where she enjoyed a few years of very successful racing, coming second overall in both 1938 and 1939.

After the war Dragon (Nancy) was sold to C.M Coates of Lymington, and raced at Cowes Week in 1947 together with eleven other Six Metres. This was a brief ownership as Coates sold her that Winter to H.V & T.K Culpan. She went on to be renamed Nancy and took part in Poole Week in 1948 with eight other much newer Sixes, gaining a first and second during the week.

1951 saw Nancy return to the East Coast in Burnham-on-Crouch, where she raced in Burnham Week. Like most of the classic Six Metres, in 1956 Nancy was fitted with a cabin and small deckhouse, designed by Laurent Giles. This addition allowed her to race under RORC rating events. It is noted that Nancy took part in a number of East Coast offshore races.

It was then the turn of Capt. Mike Henry RN take on the ownership of Nancy, which he did for 25 years! She was based in Gareloch, Scotland with Capt. Henry who took part in many Scottish cruising races.

The early 90’s saw Nancy return to the Solent when A.C Joyce purchased her and moored her on the River Hamble. She took part in a few events on the Solent including the British Open Championships still sporting her cabin! Very briefly sold to R Dean Wilson and Ms Valerie Wilson Trower who then sold her to Bill Green in Lymington.

It was Bill Green of Green Marine Yard in Lymington who really helped Nancy take on the next years of her life in style and elegance. Bill went about completely restoring Nancy back to her original design of 1932, however he fitted a third rule keel to a design of Olin Stephens. Bill and his son, Pom, went about racing Nancy for many wonderful years until the loss of Bill in 2014.

The current owner has shown Nancy the same loving attention to detail that Bill had shown her and has continued to race at national level. Nancy was the 2016 British Open Championship Winner, the winner of the both the Panerai Cup in Cowes and the Hamble Classics in the same year.

2017 saw the Elephant Boatyard replace 30 ribs and fit stainless steel mast strengthening, new paint job which has meant that she has remained as elegant, strong and fast as she was when originally built.

Now waiting for her next custodian.

Seabird (6mtr)

L oa - 1600mm      beam 260mm        displacement 11.5kgs.

Taking a fresh look at the 6m class, Dave Hollom designed 'Seabird' to be slightly lighter than the existing designs and by pushing the envelope of certain parameters, she is able to achieve a similar sail area to her heavier fellow 6m's. 'Seabird' is constructed with a mix of 2 layers of carbon/kevlar cloth, then reinforcement carbon strips are applied in other areas using female moulds. The fin is built into the hull, with the lead ballast detachable from the fin by a stainless steel rod. The rudder and lead ballast can be painted in the same colour as the hull, or finished to our standard dark grey option.

'Seabird' is configured to support the RMG sail winch inside the large radio pot, utilising a digitally printed mounting system. The rudder servo is installed outside the pot, in a separate tray to the rear. Additionally when using an RMG, we recommend using a 'left hand' 32mm self tensioning drum, easy to set up and very reliable.

Hull Kit options and Pricings The basic hull comes in the form of a part completed yacht, ready for the installation of the rig and radio equipment.  Alternatively a fully finishe d 'Ready to Sail' 6mtr can be purchased, the skipper just requires a TX, Rx and batteries. 

Option 1 - £1400 Hull Kit and lead ballast Includes all eyebolts, deck pulleys and a sheeting line threaded through, leaving plenty of extra cord for attaching to the booms and winch drum.

Option 2 - £3400 As Option 1 plus RMG winch, RMG self tensioning drum, RMG watertight switch, XT30 connectors and a Rudder servo.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Herreshoff 6 Meter

Designed by Starling Burgess to the Six Metre rule and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1921.  She was part of the first ever team of American 6m yachts to be campaigned in England and she carried sail number US4.

After the racing she remained in the UK and her well documented history took her cruising around Scotland, Ireland, over to Norway with various owners who have written books and memoirs about their time with the boat.

The present owner, a professional shipwright, carried out a major refit around 2015 which included a lot of structural work to the hull and re-fastening, plus fitting a new gaff sloop rig in place of her cutting edge bermudan rig from when she was launched.  With the new set up she has raced very successfully and proved to be equally fast and fun to sail.  Her original bermudan rig is still with the boat.  Recent paint and varnish work done in June 2019 so she is looking particularly smart.

She has proved to be a very competitive boat, winning Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic regatta and has consistently been at the head of the fleet in other regattas and local races.  She has the potential to do extremely well in classic events both here and in the Mediterranean and could be a cost effective yacht in which to enjoy these regattas.

Construction

Carvel planked in 3/4″ Honduras mahogany all bronze screw fastened to steam bent oak timbers at 6″ centres.  90% of the hull was re-fastened in 2015, there is no movement even when hard pressed.

Hull is splined throughout, these splines were all renewed in 2015.

Wooden structural floors across the centreline.  All centreline bolts from stem to stern replaced in phosphor bronze in 2015.

External lead ballast keel of 2.5 tons fastened with bronze keel bolts.  Half the bolts replaced in phosphor bronze in 2015.  The others were drawn and checked, found to be in excellent condition.

New hanging knees in way of the mast form an effective ring frame the strengthen the hull.

Deck laid in T&G yellow pine, overlaid with 1/4″ Robins marine plywood and sheathed externally with epoxy glass cloth.  June 2019 deck paint.  Varnished Honduras mahogany toe rails and rubbing strakes.

Pair of circular cockpits, one for the helm and one for the crew, both with varnished teak coamings.

Tiller steering with a new rudder from 2015.  All new hangings and rudder stock.

Gaff sloop rig fitted new by the current owner.

Keel stepped varnished spruce hollow mast with an internal plywood structural web, new in 2016.  The bare mast only weighs 40kg.

Varnished hollow spruce boom and gaff.  Hollow spruce spinnaker pole plus a carbon fibre pole.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal bronze chain plates.  New bronze chain plate bolts in 2015.  Rigging and rigging screws new in 2015.

Running back stays on Highfield levers.

3 self tailing Andersen winches mounted on the deck between the cockpits.

Mainsail, 2016 but used for only one season, topsail, 2 x jibs, spinnaker and new asymmetric spinnaker.  Spare older mainsail

Ash faced varnished blocks.  Classic braid dyneema running rigging.

Original bermudan rig complete with rigging and sails still with the boat and able to be fitted directly back in if required, uses same chain plates and mast step .

Vire single cylinder petrol engine fitted in 1990 and in perfect working order.  Electric start.

Starboard offset 2 blade bronze propeller.  Prop, shaft, bearings and deep sea seal gland all new in 2015.

25 litre plastic fuel tank.

Single battery charged from the engine.

4 berths below decks which are cosy and sheltered with the cockpit covers fitted.

Portable camping gas stove with storage space for domestic equipment.

Perfect for regatta accommodation or weekend camping trips.
