To draw a simple sailboat, first, sketch a long, upside-down trapezoid for the hull of the boat. Then, draw a small trapezoid on top of the larger trapezoid for the cabin. • Drawing Paper
• Crayons or Colored Pencils
• Black Marker (optional)
• How to Draw a Sailboat Printable PDF (see bottom of lesson)

In this post, we are going to learn how to draw a sailboat with basic drawing tools. Be sure to observe the different sizes and shapes of each part of the sailboat. The pencil lines in each step is drawn out in blue so you can see the current parts that you will be illustrating.

Time Needed: 30 minutes

Draw The Hull

First, draw the top of the hull by creating a horizontal oval shape with two pointed edges similar to the illustration. Next, create the side of the hull by drawing a line attached to the pointed edges of the oval.

Add The Cabin

Add the cabin by forming a sloped rectangular box.

Draw Windows

Draw the windows by forming rectangular shapes as shown.

Attach The Mast

Attach the mast by drawing a long vertical pole.

Attach The Boom

Attach the boom to the right side of the mast by creating a shorter horizontal pole.

Draw The Sails

Let’s draw the sails of the sailboat! First, draw the mainsail by making a diagonal line connected to the mast and boom. Next, draw a triangular shape on the left side of the mast to form the jib.

Add The Burgee

Add the burgee by making a V-shaped line attached to the top of the mast.

Draw The Water

Draw the body of water surrounding the sailboat by making wavy horizontal lines.

Complete The Sailboat Drawing

Complete the sailboat drawing by first coloring the mainsail with an orange crayon and the jib with a red crayon. Next, shade the burgee with a yellow crayon. Now, fill in the mast and boom of the sailboat with a brown crayon. Then, color the cabin with a white crayon and the windows with a blue crayon. Don’t forget to shade the hull of the sailboat with indigo. Finally, fill in the sky with a light blue crayon and the body of water with a dark blue crayon.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Sailboat

How to Draw a Great Looking Sailboat for Kids and Beginners - Step 1

1. Begin by outlining the deck, bow, and stern of the boat . Use a long curved line for the deck, doubling it back upon itself to form the stern or back of the boat. From the front of the ship, extend a curved line, and double it back upon itself. You should outline a narrow shape. This marks the bow or the front of the boat.

2. Continue the curved line of the deck on the opposite side of the bow, continuing to outline the boat's hull. Beneath the point of the bow, draw a vertical curved line, indicating the contours of the lower bow. Then, draw a curved line down each side of the hull.

3. Outline the cabin using a long curved line. Note the corners that give the cabin a rectangular shape. Then, enclose a partial rectangle with rounded corners at the front of the cabin. This indicates a window.

4. Draw two more successively smaller rectangles with rounded corners on the side of the cabin. These form additional windows. Then, draw several smaller rectangles with rounded corners near the top of the hull.

5. Draw the mast. From the top of the cabin, extend a long straight line upward. Double it back upon itself to enclose the mast. Near the bottom of the mast, extend a horizontal straight line. Double it back upon itself to form the boom.

6. Next, draw the jib, the sail at the front of the sailboat. Use curved lines to enclose a large triangle. One corner should meet the mast, the other the bow. From the remaining corner, draw a straight line to the deck.

7. Draw the mainsail. Use the boom as its bottom line. Then, enclose the triangle using two curved lines. Draw a series of curved lines in front of the bow to indicate waves .

Before you start drawing, we also want to make sure you have the right tools. Here are the  drawing paper , and  drawing pencils  that we like to use.

The drawing is a cartoon sailboat and gives a basic idea of a sailboat sketch. You can later add more details to it and color it. Your kids will have a few good practice times, and soon they’ll be drawing boats like a pro!

Drawing the Sail

The first step is to the bottom frame of the sail. Draw a straight line as the bottom of the sail. Then a curved line like a wide m shape with the left curved line slightly smaller than the second.

Next, draw a leaf shape in the v portion from the previous step. Add a straight line under the bottom of the sail.

Next step, draw a curved line from the bottom line around the outside up to the point of the leaf shape. Draw one on each side of the sails creating a full shape of the sail. Then draw two horizontal lines under the sail as the top of the boat.

In the next step, draw a line through the bottom of the sail through the leaf shape, and out the top. Draw a small curvy line off the top and a small horizontal line between the top of the boat and the sail. Add a small curved line on both the front sail and back sail to add stripes to the sail. Then draw wavy lines under the top of the boat as the water.

Drawing the Body of the Sailboat

Draw a curved line as the bottom of the boat from each side of the boat down into the water. Then draw two slightly diagonal lines from the small horizontal line between the top of the boat and the sail down towards the top of the boat body creating a trapezoid shape as the top of the boat or helm. Draw a small curved line to complete the flag at the top of the sailboat.

Lastly, add the final details of the boat. Small details like three small circles on the boat body. Add two rectangles inside the helm.

The last step is to go over your drawing with a dark marker and then color in your sailboat. I love the idea of using basic colors.

This sailboat drawing started off years ago as a watercolor resist project, as it was so easy for students to draw. They could get the shapes down in no time, trace with a permanent black marker, add crayon texture lines to the water and trees, and then paint away. An example is included below. (Please note, those bright and pretty colors come from using real watercolor paper. It can be a bit pricey, but if you’re working on something for a special occasion, it’s worth it.)

To make things more flexible for non-painters though, I’ve made this version that just uses crayon. The super easy shapes still make it a good match for kinders and up, and the layering of the boat in front of the trees is good practice for young artists. It’s the step that comes after drawing things side by side.

• Pencils. I like how this brand always makes nice dark lines.
• Black Marker. A permanent marker will give you a dark black color.

SAUGATUCK, MI -- The Saugatuck-Douglas area is known for its beaches, lake views and riverfronts, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to get in the water.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Shanghai art center and Moscow conservatory to hold week-long educational events

Shanghai Oriental Art Center (SHOAC) will join hands with the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory in Russia to host a five-week long educational project in August.

A series of events, such as concerts by professors and the Chinese alumni of the conservatory, the SHOAC-Moscow Conservatory Summer Piano Academy, and a picture exhibition on the 160-year history of the esteemed Russian institution, will take place at the Shanghai Theater from Aug 18 to Sept 21.

Last year SHOAC signed its second five-year strategic cooperation framework with the conservatory. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Russian diplomatic ties, and the two sides decided to introduce the new conservatory at SHOAC project to facilitate further and in-depth collaboration through concerts, public-welfare events and art education programs.

The piano department of Moscow Conservatory has nurtured a series of internationally recognized musicians such as Sviatoslav Richter, Boris Berman and Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as Chinese pianists Liu Shikun and Li Minduo.

Andrey Pisarev, head of the piano department at the conservatory, will join hands with Professor Pavel Nersessian to hold the SHOAC-Moscow Conservatory Summer Piano Academy from Aug 19 to 22.

Professor Pisarev and Professor Nersessian will work one-on-one with piano students aged above 10 in Shanghai and help them with the interpretation of traditional European repertoire by introducing the integration of Russia's music culture and the European music tradition, revealing the ideas and intentions behind the composers' creation and elaboration of the technical details in their performance.

The two professors will also jointly present a three-hour concert Marathon on Aug 18. Professor Pisarev will perform Schubert's Piano Sonata No 21 in B-flat major and Liszt's Piano Sonata in b minor, while Professor Nersessian will play Beethoven's beloved sonatas Pathetique and Moonlight , as well as Chopin's Ballades.

The Chinese alumni of the conservatory will present a gala concert for the SHOAC Citizen's Concert Series on the morning of Sept 21.

The Moscow Conservatory Rector Alexander Sokolov will visit the SHOAC on Sept 20 to discuss further communications and exchanges with the Shanghai Theater and turning the Moscow Conservatory at SHOAC project into a regular event every year.

Parts of a Sailboat

Hull: The main body of a sailboat provides buoyancy and supports all other components.

Mast: A tall vertical pole that supports the sails and stands upright on the boat.

Boom: A horizontal pole that extends from the mast and holds the foot of the mainsail.

Sails: These are large pieces of fabric that catch the wind and propel the sailboat forward. The sails include the mainsail, jib, and spinnaker.

Keel: This fin-like structure extends downward from the hull to provide stability and prevent capsizing.

Sir Keir Starmer is in Washington this week, busily meeting with a host of world leaders in his very first week as prime minister.

The latest was the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

In a readout, a spokesperson for Ms Meloni said she and Sir Keir "reiterated their intention to strengthen the action to relaunch the strategic partnership".

A statement added: "The two leaders shared the intention to keep in close contact on all the main issues of international interest, and to continue the fruitful exchange at the European Political Community Summit."

This will be hosted at Blenheim Palace next week.

Sir Keir and Ms Meloni also "reviewed the broad spectrum of bilateral relations, reiterating their intention to strengthen the action to relaunch the strategic partnership between the two nations in all sectors of mutual interest, including cooperation in combating irregular migration".

The latest NATO summit in Washington is well under way, and one of the most striking elements is Sir Keir Starmer's debut on the world stage.

He's met world leaders including Joe Biden, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Olaf Scholz - the first of whom welcomed him to the stage before alliance leaders posed for their traditional group photo.

The UK has launched a multi-billion pound national wealth fund to power green invest and infrastructure development in an effort to grow the economy.

So far £7.3bn in state funds has been allocated so investments can be made "immediately" in areas such as ports, manufacturing and renewable energy.

The move is part of Labour's plans to grow the economy through planning reform, housebuilding targets and the creation of state-owned power company Great British Energy.

Economic growth is a core goal of Labour's time in government - their investment plans are predicated on the increased tax yields a larger economy brings, rather than borrowing to invest.

Sir Keir Starmer has not ruled out 20,000 prisoners being released early in a bid to ease pressure on the justice system - as the new prime minister told Sky News the last government acted "almost beyond recklessness" on criminals.

The state of the justice system has become one of the first major challenges  Sir Keir  has to face in charge of the country.

Overcrowding means the government is considering letting prisoners serve only 40% of their sentences, rather than the 50% which is currently in place.

There are reports this could mean up to 20,000 prisoners are released early over "many" months.

Asked about this by Sky News's political editor  Beth Rigby , Sir Keir said: "I'm not going to get ahead of the statement [we] will make on this, but, I am not going to pretend it's not a very real problem that's been left to us."

He said the criminal justice system was a "much worse problem" than he thought it would be.

Andrew Bowie, the Conservative MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, is now joining Sophy Ridge.

He is asked about a Labour plan to ban future oil and gas licences in the North Sea, despite a claim that work had already been halted being rubbished today.

Mr Bowie, the shadow veterans' minister, warns against "driving away investment".

He says this will ultimately drive away jobs, adding: "We need to ensure that we continue to have exploration and drilling in the North Sea."

The frontbencher says this activity will bolster energy security, saying: "We don't want to become reliant on foreign imports."

Sophy now turns to the two-child benefit cap, which now affects around 1.6 million children.

The Conservative government  introduced the cap, which prevents parents from claiming child tax credit or Universal Credit for more than two children for those born after April 2017.

Wes Streeting, who is one of seven children, is asked whether he is personally comfortable with the cap.

He says he is not: "That's why I voted against it when it was brought in."

The health secretary says the government is working "at pace" to "make sure we've got a serious cross-government strategy for reducing child poverty in this country".

"What's different now to when we were last in government is so much of that poverty affects families who are both in work and in poverty," he says.

"Now, we said before the election we wouldn't make promises unless we could keep them. 

"We wouldn't make promises unless we knew the country could afford them. 

"I think people are going to have to bear with the government on a whole range of fronts as we try and clean up the terrible mess the Conservatives have left."

Sophy now turns to talks Wes Streeting held with junior doctors this week, in a bid to resolve a long-lasting dispute over pay and conditions.

Further talks are set to take place next week.

"I said we wouldn't waste time," the health secretary says. 

"I rang them on day one.

"We want to keep the momentum up and give junior doctors the confidence of knowing that the government will treat them with respect. 

"Unlike the last government."

Sophy asks if the pay rise junior doctors are asking for - of 35% - is realistic. 

"They've also said... that they're willing to negotiate," Mr Streeting says.

"And in that spirit, where we're entering this process in good faith, I'm genuinely angry at the way that junior doctors are being treated."

The health secretary points out that the last time a health secretary met with junior doctors was in March.
