It's not easy to transform a vessel built for function into a thing of beauty. But, if done right, the results can be magnificent. From naval frigates to ice-breaking tugs, we take a look at the top ten largest superyacht conversions to date...

1. Yas | 141m

Yas was first delivered in 1978 as a naval frigate named HNLMS Piet Hein . After two decades of service in the Dutch Royal Navy and a decade serving the UAE military, she was released from duty and converted into a private yacht under the codename Swift 141. Jacques Pierrejean is the man behind her futuristic design which includes a giant glass dome. The entire project was carried out in Abu Dhabi and the vessel was extended by 12 metres to accommodate a new pool deck. In 2011, she was relaunched in Port Zayed in Abu Dhabi and is the 11th largest yacht in the world .

2. Maryah | 125m

The 125 metre former Russian research vessel sailed under the names Dalmorgeologiya , Fortune and Czar , before she was converted into a SOLAS-compliant superyacht by Greek shipyard Elefis in 2015. Details of her interiors have been closely guarded but are said to feature a cinema and accommodation for 54 guests across her six decks.

3. Alexander | 121.95m

Alexander first splashed in 1965 and served as a cruise liner until 1985 when, after several changes of ownership, she was converted into a superyacht by Greek shipping tycoon John Latsis. She was extensively refitted in 1985 and then again in 1998, with accommodation for up to 80 guests in 40 staterooms. Highlights include a swimming pool, hospital, gymnasium, a 27-seat cinema and a helicopter landing pad.

4. Project Y910 | 120m

Built in Poland in 1990, the 90 metre vessel served as an offshore supply ship named after the Russian writer Vladimir Chivilikhin . The ship was in service until 1998 when its owner decided to convert the vessel into a luxury per-cabin charter yacht under the project name KAY. Work on the hull began at Keppel Singmarine before the yacht made its way to Italy for outfitting at Fincantieri. The half-built project was put up for auction in November 2021. Currently lying at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste, she patiently awaits a new owner. 

5. Turama | 116.41 m

Christened Delfin Caravelle, the 116 metre vessel was delivered as a passenger ship in 1990 by Finnish shipyard Rauma and converted into a luxury charter yacht in 2004. Little is known about the conversion of Turama .

6. Dream | 106.5m

The 106.5 metre Dream was born into the world as a humble passenger vessel before she embarked on a near decade-long conversion project to fulfil the lifelong dream of an ambitious new owner. Under the project name Poseidonos, work began in 2008 at Chalkis Shipyards in Greece with exterior design by Studio Vafiadis and an all-new interior by  Ciarmoli Queda Studio. The team's efforts were rewarded when Dream picked up a Neptune for Best Converted Yacht at the 2019 World Superyacht Awards . 

7. Christina O | 99.15m

Christina O was built for the Canadian Navy as an anti-submarine frigate under the name HMCS Stormont .  After surviving in the second world war, she was purchased for scrap value by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who then converted her into the legendary Christina O . A six-year conversion ensued and she was reborn in 1954 as an ultra-luxury private yacht that was regularly seen to host royalty and the Hollywood A-list with the likes of Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Sir Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, John F Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor welcomed on board.

8. Voyager | 91.4m

Previously known as Danah Voyager , the conversion of this former offshore supply ship is the largest to take place on American soil. First delivered by Swiftships in 1997, the 63 metre commercial vessel arrived in Dania Cut in Florida in 2016 and emerged from the sheds three years later as a 90 metre explorer with five decks, 70 crew and a dive centre.

9. Dubawi | 90.6m

Dubawi began life in 1989 as a small passenger ship built by Cantieri Navale Ferrari before she was converted into a private yacht two decades after her launch. The project was awarded to Dubai shipyard Platinum Yachts and remains one of its biggest projects to date, second only to the 162 metre Dubai . Work included a five-metre extension, a restructuring of the top deck and an entirely new interior.

10. Lauren L | 90m

Built by Cassens-Werft in 2002, Lauren L began life as a cruise ship sailing under the name Constellation . After four years in service, she was bought by Liveas Yachts who converted her into a modern charter yacht with the capacity to carry a maximum of 40 guests.

ADM Launches Yas Superyacht, the world’s 6th Largest Yacht

Previously called Swift 141, this ex-naval frigate has recently been turned into the 6th largest yacht in the world , right ahead of Crown Prince Sultan of Saudi Arabia’s Al Salamah and David Geffen’s Rising Sun. This 462.5 ft megayacht was built in Abu Dhabi, by ADM Shipyards.

It is said that the vessel was ordered by a member of the Arabic royal family. The boat, called “Yas”, is one of the most luxurious vessels today. The hull of the yacht is built in such a way that it offers great hydrodynamics and speeds, while the boat’s highest velocity is thought to be around 26 knots.

Using beautiful lineage and curves, with superb glass-covering and creating a gorgeous ambiance throughout its all length, Pierrejean Designs projected the vessel, both on the exterior and the interior. The yacht is propelled by diesel power engines, with the help of variable-pitch propellers, assuring ecological fuel-consumption, transoceanic autonomy and an average cruise speed of 20 knots.

The boat can assure accommodation for 60 guests and a 56 staff-crew throughout its stern platform, outdoor spa and pool, a garage for water-sports machines and gadgets plus a carbon-fiber bridge-like door that can be a swimming platform or a boarding bridge. The thrusters, single-stern and dual-bow, can provide dynamic positioning for its crew.

Furthermore, there is a set of amenities that are said to be the best aboard any yachts out there – an extensive audiovisual entertainment system – as ADM Shipyards declare. The list that follows this yacht, gadget-wise, is extremely impressive: long-range underwater sonar, FLIR and high-definition day cameras, Night Navigator, SatCom and ultimate-tech radars.

The boat is also the first ever built to comply with the private-vessel-standards of the latest UAE Large Yacht Code and it’s built under Classification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This magnificent work of beauty, engineering and design is still undergoing some finishing touches, and it’s expected to be launched during 2012.

Yas: The Largest Motor Yacht of 2011

Motor yacht Yas is the largest yacht to be launched in 2011. The Yas – originally named Swift 141 – was put into active operation in the month of November 2011 by the ADM ship building conglomerate. The superyacht is regarded to be one of the most impressive and remarkable yachts that are in operation at present times.

Ranking sixth among the world’s biggest yachts, Yas is known for its construction, appearance and the feasibility it provides while cruising on water.

Re-modified from a former Dutch war vessel belonging to the 1970s, the features and specifications of the superyacht can be summarised as follows:

• Both the inner and outer designing aspect of the yacht has been carried out by the well-known French designing company, Piereejan Design
• Yas has a steel hull – remnants of the Dutch war vessel – and is built of special lighter materials and components. This allows the vessel to retain its speed even while being huger in terms of dimensions
• The maximum speed offered by the vessel is 26 knots. However at full capacity, the vessel is capable of traversing at a speed of up to 23 knots with a marine ambit of about 5,000 nautical miles
• Yas measures 141 metres lengthwise and 15 metres beam wise with a draft of 4.3 metres
• The superyacht offers an accommodation for 60 voyagers and a crew of 56 members

Another very important feature of the yacht is the providing of uninterrupted across-the-ocean vista, accentuated by a covering-glass design, throughout the vessel. The super yacht is also equipped with state-of-the-art communication and navigation systems like Sonar, satellite communicators and a special navigation system to enable smooth traversing in case of daylight inadequacy.

Operated by two diesel engines each generating a power of 21,000 horse power (HP), the superyacht’s engines and fuel are environmentally sustainable. This uniqueness by the developers has led the vessel to be highly lauded in the international maritime domain.

Yas was accorded the name Swift 141 because of the vessel’s intended superiority in terms of speed. Equipped with dependability and class, the Yas superyacht is a vessel worth exploring – not just as an admirer but also a voyager.

Megayacht Yas (Project Swift 141)

Constructed in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Yas is a 141m megayacht built from the hull of an ex dutch frigate. The uniqueness of Yas makes her one of the most interesting and admired yachts in the world. Marine Power Systems were proud to provide commissioning services for the 16,000kW propulsion drive system, enabling the yacht to successfully complete sea trials prior to hand over the her new owner. Main engines consist of 2 MTU 8000, 20 cylinder engines, and the ‘original’ re-worked gearbox built by Damen Schelde in the Netherlands. Wartsila provide the shaft line and Controllable Pitch Propeller systems.

It was the role of Marine Power Systems Ltd to ensure that machinery and systems integrated with each other and that the plant was commissioned in a safe and professional manner. Over the course of 6 months, this was one of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs that we have undertaken.

Hello everyone, I noticed a press release from Dutch technical services company Imtech yesterday, which states that a former Dutch frigate measuring 130 metres will be rebuild/converted and stretched into a 141 metre megayacht. Probably a faster way of getting a yacht with such capabilities than building a new one, but if a "normal" wealthy person owns such a ship, I guess all the weapon systems have to be removed prior to the sale? But since this frigate is part of the UAE navy, perhaps a ruler is the owner, so some weaponry will stay in place? If I'm correct these "Standaard-fregatten" (Standard class frigates) are gasturbine powered, have a top speed of 32 knots, and a draught of over 6 metres (20 ft). http://www.imtech.nl/eCache/DEF/6/490.bGFuZz1FTg.html (Admin Edit: This thread updated with current post-conversion pic)

YAS is based on the hull of an 1978 built Dutch Navy Ship, the HNLMS Piet Hein , a Kortenaer-class frigate of the Royal Netherlands Navy. This ship was sold in 2003 to the UAE and originally equipped with 4 Rolls Royce gas turbines (COGOG propulsion). During the conversion, the gas turbines were replaced with 2 MTU 20V 8000 diesel engines with app. 7.800 KW each. With 141 meter in length and only 15 meters in beam, a very sleek boat. The German Navy used to have several almost identical frigates, the Bremen-class. Our sailors had had a saying about that hull design, "it starts rolling already on a wet lawn". GRP for the superstructure on the yacht conversion was taken for obvious reasons. My oldest son served during his conscript time on one of this frigates. He discribes his state of health at his time of military duty as either seasick or homesick . The conversion (which was more than complex) caused many problems (and a lot of money), not only because the base was a more than 30 year old beaten and abused military ship. Some of the problems were yard and subcontractor related. The drums in the industry are telling, they still have engine problems due to the high raw water inlet temperature in her home waters (Thats why the Navy likes Gas Turbines). Especially the MTU 8000 class engines do not like to be run outside their pretty narrow spec. (Mr. L. Allison could tell a lot about that subject). IMHO this yacht had the wrong base to be converted from, the wrong yard for that conversion and some, lets say, less than optimum subcontractors and project management. Filler, paint and fairing allone will not turn a duck into a swan. Just my 2 (Euro) cents

Awesome reply. Thank you. I knew it was a conversion from an old Navy ship, but I had no idea of the engines, sea-handling traits, and the rest. Sounds like a less than optimal situation. Silk purse/Sow's ear and all that.

Personal comfort of VIP guests during voyage or on the hook is definately not part of the spec of a military combat vessel . Yachts do not have to outturn torpedos or bombs and have to circle around her convoys in order to protect them from subs. Even with the stabilizers added during the conversion, YAS will not be very comfortable, when on anchor in less than calm sea. And I feel very sorry for her deckies, which have to clean her forward superstructure. Not an easy care boat.

Since we never had an official thread for the "YAS" then here is one. This is one strange vessel that has an interesting history and even more interesting period being converted from a Naval vessel (frigate) that served the Royal Netherlands Navy as well as the Abu Dhabi Navy to a one of a kind bespoke superyacht for a daring owner. For the first time we can watch a fairly in depth video regarding some of the work done and challenges encountered in making this build a reality. This is definitely a strange vessel. Either love it or hate it. The video was well done!

I like the documentary and while I had seen certain parts of "YAS" before, this video showed alot more of the interior that was never seen before.

Taylor Swift is in the heat of Travis Kelce 's electric touch.

After all, the "Karma" singer and Kansas City Chiefs player were seen enjoying a PDA-packed day at the beach during their recent vacation in the Bahamas.

In the pics from their outing, posted by the Daily Mail , Taylor, donning a yellow pinstriped bikini from Montce and a pair of shades, was soaking in the sun alongside Travis, who wore a pair of blue and white swim trunks.

During the outing, the couple, who were photographed tanning on the beach and lounging in the water, couldn't help but share some sweet kisses in the waves and on the sand. Afterward, the Grammy winner and tight-end boarded a boat to enjoy the tropical views.

But the sunny dates didn't end when they returned stateside as days after their romantic getaway, Taylor and Travis, both 34, had enjoyed the rays during a lunch at Nobu in Malibu, Calif., March 24.

Their sweet outings come as Taylor enjoys a break from her Eras Tour and Travis basks in the NFL off-season. In fact, the tight end traveled to Singapore to see the "Bejeweled" singer enchant the crowd while wrapping up the Asia-Pacific leg of her concert series. And a few weeks prior, Travis flew to Australia to enjoy her Sydney show—and a trip to the zoo .

But it's no surprise that Taylor and Travis are in their lavender haze, as they now have some free time since the Eras Tour will resume in May, and the NFL training camps begin in July.

With Taylor's global stardom, it's not uncommon for fans and critics to peer into their time together, but it hasn't rattled the football player.

"I'm not running away from any of it—the scrutiny she gets, how much she has a magnifying glass on her," Travis explained to WSJ. Magazine in November, "every single day, paparazzi outside her house, outside every restaurant she goes to, after every flight she gets off, and she's just living, enjoying life. When she acts like that I better not be the one acting all strange."

July 2023: So, Make the Friendship Bracelets

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's love story began in July 2023, when the singer's Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it . However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.

"I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his  New Heights podcast. "So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn't get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."

Summer 2023: This Is Him Trying

After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as "metal as hell" —Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.

"I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court," he shared on The Pat McAfee Show . "I told her, you know, 'I've seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one's a little more lit.' So, we'll see what happens in the near future."

August 2023: Enchanted to Meet You

Travis was rocking a mustache—which he debuted in August during training camp—when he was first introduced to Taylor .

As he later noted of the era, "That 'stache and the 87 jersey was pretty iconic there for a little bit, and I had it when I met Taylor for the first time."

September 2023: Sparks Fly

By early September, a source close to the situation told E! News that Travis and Taylor were " texting and talking here and there ."

141m motor yacht Yas (ex Swift 141) has been launched by ADM Shipyards in Abu Dhabi . Stunning Yas superyacht´s unique interior and exterior design and styling is a brilliant result of the French studio Pierrejean Design. She features a strikingly graceful exterior of fluid curves and volumes, and an excellent structural covering of glass and can be classified as the eleventh largest yacht on the water today.

ADM super yacht Yas offers luxury accommodation to up to 60 guests. She features an automatic stern platform, outdoor pool and spa, a garage to store water toys and a carbon-fibre door that serves either as a boarding or swim platform. Dual bow and single stern thrusters permit dynamic positioning for her crew.

141m luxury yacht YAS – Swift 141 has a couple of very important technical and aesthetic characteristics including a relatively narrow beam that lowers her resistance through the water and makes her shape even more graceful. Her superstructure is said to be the largest composite object of its kind ever constructed.

ADM’s stunning YAS megayacht is incredibly fast for her size with a maximum speed of 26 knots, a cruising speed of 20 knots, transoceanic range, and an eco-friendly fuel economy. Her speedy performance also comes from her fast and manoeuvrable hull, adapted from a UAE Navy frigate.

Swift 141 yacht YAS is fitted with advanced radars, SatCom, long-range underwater Sonar, FLIR and high-definition day cameras, and Night Navigator. She is constructed under Classification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and is the first yacht ever built to comply with requirements of the new UAE Large Yacht Code developed for private vessels.

Moreover, according to ADM Shipyards her audiovisual entertainment system is ´the most extensive and sophisticated aboard any yacht.´

At the recent launching ceremony, Johan Valentijn, Privinvest Executive Board member and Industrial Manager in charge of the project, said: “Our international team of experts, subcontractors, and suppliers has accomplished one of the great challenges in modern yacht building, and set in place a major milestone in shipbuilding technology and art that will be difficult to surpass.”

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
