The Establishment

The history of Saga Boats AS was born in 1960. The Drageseth brothers had been running a shirt factory for 14 years and got the idea to start building boats in the new material of glass-reinforced polyester. A 10 foot jolly-boat was produced and soon the production of three new models was started. New buildings were required and the new factory was located on the unsheltered shore of Western Norway facing the North Sea, perfect for testing and maintaining Saga quality and seaworthiness.

Saga 20 was born in 1967 and was an immediate success in Norway as well as abroad. 200 copies were produced yearly and were exported to large parts of Europe. In order to meet the great demand, the production plant and workforce were considerably increased.

FJORD NAVAL ARCHITECTS

Designing Beautiful Boats

There are more than thousand fjords in Norway. Waterlines of stunning beauty – but also of wind, wild waters and hardship.

The Norwegians needed some pretty good boats to work these waters, and have proud traditions for building them. I love the lines of these old boats – they are simple yet sophisticated and they just look right.

I take inspiration from these - and other great naval designs - into the 21st century, recreating the construction, yet adapting them to modern materials as needed.

Around the world, people have come to love modern Nordic design in architecture and furniture. It is minimalist, functional simplicity and clean lines, inspired by nature. We apply the same principles to our boats.

Whether you are looking to build the boat yourself, or take the plans to a builder, our designs will ensure you a high quality, safe and functional boat without sacrificing gracefulness and beauty.

We welcome you to contact us and learn more about what we do and what makes us tick.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Currently developing a series of Færings based on the boat design from the west coast of Norway. These will be for rowing, sailing and motor with a small outboard (petrol or electric)

the history of arctic

Result of centuries of experience from Scandinavian boat-builders

Result of centuries of experience from Scandinavian boat-builders

The new Finnish Arctic boats are first-class all-weather vessels, which feel as comfortable in cold northern waters as in their native environment. The Arctic's manufacturers have translated their vast experience and know-how into innovative solutions that correspond to the modern vision of a pleasure boat's reliability. The key features of the Arctic premium boats are high speed, complete safety and the best seaworthiness, without compromising on comfort. All of this creates a good match with the boats' advanced appearance, clever design, and extremely high quality.

From the fiords and the Atlantic Ocean

From the fiords and the Atlantic Ocean

The Arctic boats reflect both the vast experience of Norwegian shipbuilders and the Finnish modern vision for design and ecological problems. The parent brand name is from the largest and the oldest shipyard in Norway – Askeladden. In 2006, this honored boat-builder from Norway, highly recognized by marine professionals and by water recreation enthusiasts, focused on an ambitious task – to launch the Commuter boat range for heavy northern operating conditions. It is these technically advanced powerboats with an ideal design that became the prototypes of the Arctic series of boats.

Challenge to the winds and the waves

Challenge to the winds and the waves

The sophisticated and innovative Commuter project has demanded enormous investments and hard work from the international leading professionals involved in many different developments. This fundamental and large-scale approach for a new model creation surpassed all efforts demonstrated earlier by any manufacturer. The Commuter 805 was a pioneer in the Askeladden range, followed by the Commuter 8. Later, a flagship in the all-weather boat range – the Commuter 11 – was introduced for the first time in 2009 in Oslo, Norway, gaining the prestigious title of perhaps the best powerboat among SUV boats.

Promising future

Promising future

Using the unique experience of the Norwegian manufacturers, the Finnish Arctic boats OU which received the rights for the Commuter in 2013, and started to working on the newly update boat range under the ARCTIC brand name in close partnership with the Askeladden shipyard. In accordance with the current standards and wishes of the most demanding customers, the design and appearance of the Commuter 8 (whose new name is the Commuter 25) as well as the Commuter 11 (the Commuter 35 in the new version) have been completely renewed and revitalized. All Arctic models are certified according to the international B-Offshore class.

The ARCTIC boats are the quintessence of both the vast Norwegian experience and the modern European vision for the design and solutions to ecological problems.

Built by true boat builders

Whether you decide on a Faurby Yacht, a Nordic Cruiser or Nordship Yacht, all our yachts are built by true boat builders and the common theme of handcrafted quality runs all the way through our brands.

There are easier, faster and more economical ways to build a boat, we know this, but we wouldn’t be true boat builders if we built boats that way, we couldn’t call ourselves craftsmen, and we couldn’t say we’ll build your boat the best way we know. We take pride in every boat we create because we want you to be proud of your yacht, so you know you made the right decision by letting us build your dream boat.

All shipyards, shipbuilders & docks in Norway

Norway has a significant shipbuilding and ship repair industry, with a long history dating back to the Viking age. The industry is primarily concentrated in several key regions, including Møre og Romsdal, Hordaland, and Rogaland. Shipbuilding in Norway is focused on the construction of specialized vessels, including fishing vessels, offshore supply vessels, and cruise ships. Norwegian shipyards are known for their high quality, innovation, and use of advanced technology, which have made them competitive in the global shipbuilding market. The ship repair industry in Norway is also well-established, with several large shipyards offering a wide range of repair and maintenance services. These shipyards are equipped with modern facilities, including dry docks, slipways, and repair workshops, to facilitate a wide range of repair and maintenance work. The Norwegian government has been actively supporting the development of the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, providing tax incentives and other forms of support to encourage investment in the sector. Norwegian shipyards have also been expanding their international presence, with many establishing joint ventures and partnerships with foreign shipyards to access new markets and technologies. However, the industry has also faced several challenges, including increased competition from other shipbuilding nations and a decline in demand for certain vessel types. Nevertheless, the shipbuilding and ship repair industry remains an important contributor to the Norwegian economy and a key player in the global maritime industry.

Fjords

Fjords of Norway

When on a yacht charter in Norway, visiting the fjords are an absolute must. Spread across Western Norway, these narrow fjords were created by a succession of ice ages, centuries ago, and they haven’t changed much since.

Today, Norway’s famed Fjords are strewn between tall mountains, cascading waterfalls, and glaciers, and are home to vast wildlife, like seals, eagles, whales, fish and more. Wander into its bordering villages, and you’ll find a local, nature-inspired lifestyle, with each community built around the strengths of its residents.

With individual fjords even named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fjords are some of the most astounding landscapes in the world. Their natural beauty comes from their steep, narrow crystalline rock walls; most of which rise as high as 4,593 feet and go as deep as 1,640 feet below the Norwegian Sea.

Norway fjord

Going on a luxury yacht charter in Norway ? If you do, make sure you sail through the fjords. While there are currently 1,190 fjords to see, checkout some of our favorites — like the ones listed below.

As the southernmost of country’s largest fjords, Lysefjord stretches 24 miles in length, and ranges from 42 to 1,400 feet deep. It is surrounded by towering mountains, and is home to famed landmarks like the Pulpit Rock, in Forsand, and Mount Kjerag, on the southern side of Lysefjord, in Rogaland.

Hjørundfjord

Stretching 22 miles in length, Hjørundfjord is a fjord arm of a larger fjord, Storfjorden. It is surrounded by dense forests and the dramatic mountains of the Sunnmørsalpene mountain range, with some peaks as tall as 5,600 feet. Adding to its allure, Hjørundfjord is dotted with several small villages, like Bjørke, Leira, Viddal and Urke.

Hardangerfjord

Regarded as the reigning “queen” of Norway’s fjords, Hardangerfjord is characterized by spellbinding scenery you just can’t find anywhere else; like mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, orchards, blossoming fruit trees and more. The Nærøyfjord is an arm of the Sognefjord and has been dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stretching 111 miles in length, Hardangerfjord is the second longest fjord in Norway.

As Norway’s longest fjord, and the second longest in the world, Sognefjord runs inland for 127 miles and reaches depths of 1,300+ meters. Often referred to as “The King of Fjords,” Sognefjord also includes part of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in all of continental Europe. This part of the world is regarded as one of the most beautiful travel destinations, namely due to its unique landscapes: like glaciers on mountaintops, green farmlands and deep, cascading fjords.

Geirangerfjord

Dubbed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Geirangerfjord is one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations. It is lined with cascading water falls and a number of abandoned farms, like Skageflå, Knivsflå and Blomberg, to name a few. The two most notable waterfalls in this part of the world are de Syv Søstre, which translates to “the seven sisters,” and Friaren, which translates to “the suitor.” The two waterfalls sit on opposite sides of the fjord, facing each other; leading to the belief that “the suitor” is trying to seduce “the seven sisters.”

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nærøyfjord is Sognefjord’s most narrow, but best known arm. Only 12 miles in length, Nærøyfjord is filled with majestic mountains, deep valleys, towering peaks, snowfields, waterfalls and small hamlets.

THE FJORDS OF NORWAY

Norwegian fjords are symbols of the beauty of traditional Norway. Places where time moves in its own pace. Enjoy the calm seas as the narrow inlets, surrounded by steep cliffs and snow-capped mountains pass by – offering some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.

The Geirangerfjord is often said to be the most dazzling of the fjords. Visitors are taken in by almost vertical mountainsides embellished with numerous waterfalls and topped by snow-capped mountain peaks that look like gigantic ice cream cones all year round. Three waterfalls are particularly well known: The Seven Sisters, The Suitor and The Bridal Vei
