Custom yacht builder Hodgdon Yachts to merge with Boothbay Region Boatyard
US yacht builder Hodgdon Yachts, based in East Boothbay, Maine, has signed a letter of intent to merge with Boothbay Region Boatyard in Southport and Wotton's Wharf in Boothbay Harbor.
'Combining Boothbay Region Boatyard’s outstanding facilities in Southport and Wotton’s Wharf in Boothbay Harbor with our facilities in East Boothbay, Richmond and Damariscotta will create one of Maine’s largest, full service marine companies,' says Hodgdon Yachts President Timothy Hodgdon. 'We look we look forward to continuing to serve Boothbay Region Boatyard’s existing customers while aggressively pursuing opportunities to grow the combined business.'
Boothbay Region Boatyard, set on 10.5 acres with 640 feet of waterfront on Maddock Cove, will continue to service and refit yachts up to 24 metres, while Wotton's Wharf offers transient deep-water dockage for superyachts up to 61 metres LOA. Set on the west side of Boothbay Harbor, Wotton's Wharf is the base for Hodgdon's annual Shipyard Cup superyacht regatta.
When the merger is finalised this spring, Hodgdon Yachts will be operating facilities in all three of the Boothbay region's communities – Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Soutport – in addition to a location in Richmond and a new location in Damariscotta. The merger represents yet another step in the growth of America's oldest – and notably still family-owned boatbuilder – which will celebrate its 200-year anniversary in 2016.
The company's divisions currently include: Hodgdon Fine Interiors, building custom superyacht interiors for yachts up to 80 metres; Hodgdon Yachts, building custom sail and motor yachts up to 60 metres; Hodgdon Custom Tenders building high end superyacht tenders; and Hodgdon Defense Composites, building specialised defence craft.

Service Overview
MAINE BOATING DESTINATION
The Boothbay region is an ideal Maine boating destination and home to Hodgdon Yacht Services. Originally founded as a fishing community, today there are endless activities, restaurants, and sights for visitors to enjoy. While known for being a summer spot, there are reasons to visit no matter the season.
The summer months bring beautiful sunny days that are made to be photographed. The area comes to life and is a bustling community centered around an active waterfront. From fishing trips, to kayaking adventures, and island exploration, there is no shortage of fun to be had. The region is home to dozens of restaurants – most of which serve up “the world’s best lobster roll,” fresh seafood, and spectacular waterfront views. The shopping, art galleries, farmer’s markets, and festivals make the area a perfect Maine boating destination.
With a significantly slower pace than the summertime, it’s hard to beat fall in the Boothbay region. Many year-round residents describe this time as their favorite season as the trees are bursting with red, orange, and yellow leaves. It’s an ideal time to take advantage of days that are still warm by sneaking in “one last boat ride,” a quiet picnic on the beach, or a hike on the area’s trails.
During the winter, downtown goes into hibernation mode. It’s hard to imagine that just a few months prior, the streets were buzzing with activity. Nonetheless, it’s one of the most magical times of year on the Maine coast. Seeing sea smoke rolling off of the water, lobster boats covered in snow after a big nor’easter, and ice on the banks of the salty ocean is something that only the lucky year-round residents get to truly experience.
After a few short months blanketed in snow, spring arrives and everything starts to wake back up. This is the time to get outside and see beautiful flowers blooming at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, or play a round of golf (whether you prefer mini golf or the real thing at the Boothbay Harbor Country Club). It’s also the time to get the boat out of the shed and into the water, so it’ll be ready to go on the first warm day!

Boothbay Region Boatyard and Hodgdon Yachts begin merger
Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay and Boothbay Region Boatyard announced Tuesday, Jan. 14 they have signed a letter of intent to merge Boothbay Region Boatyard in Southport and Wotton's Wharf in Boothbay Harbor with Hodgdon Yachts. The combination is expected to become final this spring.
Hodgdon Yachts President Timothy Hodgdon said, “Combining Boothbay Region Boatyard's outstanding facilities in Southport and Wotton's Wharf in Boothbay Harbor with our facilities in East Boothbay, Richmond and Damariscotta will create one of Maine's largest, full-service marine companies. We look forward to continuing to serve Boothbay Region Boatyard's existing customers while aggressively pursuing opportunities to grow the combined business.”
Boothbay Region Boatyard will continue to provide maintenance and repair service to vessels ranging from outboard motorboats to yachts up to 80 feet. Hodgdon added, “The team at Boothbay Region Boatyard is highly regarded for its service capabilities and expertise in fiberglass, ship carpentry, finish, and electrical and mechanical services. We look forward to welcoming them to the Hodgdon Yachts team.”
After the combination of the two businesses and the addition of approximately 30 employees at Boothbay Region Boatyard, Hodgdon will employ about 150 people in the Boothbay region.
Sandy Spaulding, Hodgdon Yachts senior business advisor, will serve as interim general manager of Boothbay Region Boatyard as Hodgdon conducts a national search to permanently fill the position.
Wotton's Wharf, owned by Boothbay Region Boatyard, offers transient deep-water dockage for yachts up to 200 feet. Located on the west side of Boothbay Harbor, it is the home base to the annual Shipyard Cup, a Hodgdon founded and hosted superyacht regatta that draws competitors from around the world and infuses significant dollars into the region each summer.
This combination is part of an ongoing effort by Hodgdon to diversify the fifth-generation-run company, one of the Boothbay region's largest private employers. Over the past 12 years, Hodgdon has grown from its roots as an internationally-known custom yacht builder to also become an industry leader in high-quality yacht construction involving innovative advanced composites design and construction, custom tenders for superyachts, yacht interiors and projects for the United States Department of Defense. This new service division will add a significant element of diversification to the overall company.
For Boothbay Region Boatyard, this combination will provide top-level management and opportunities to attract more project and refit work for yachts up to 80 feet.
Once the merger becomes final, Hodgdon will be operating facilities in all three of the Boothbay region's communities, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport, in addition to a location in Richmond and a new location in Damariscotta.
