What separates us from our competitors.

The biggest, oldest, most expensive, OR least expensive isn’t necessarily the best. We purposely have a smaller, more exclusive fleet. We won’t accept just any boat. BPY vessels are professionally maintained and have the best reputation versus our competitors (in terms of maintenance AND quality).

Each of our vessels are given the proper time and attention to ensure they are well taken care of and most importantly, safe. Our staff to vessel ratio is the best in the marina. We also don’t rush our students in short, compact classes. We ensure our students are provided with the necessary time to practice and develop their skillset.

We aren’t just looking to just make a profit by sending as many students as possible through our ASA classes as quickly as possible. And on the opposite end, we also won’t over sell you by making you purchase large class and/or charter packages up front that you don’t necessarily need or will use.

In order to become a skilled sailor, we provide our students with the proper water time and instruction time. Our quality of USCG licensed captains and instructors is unbeatable as well. In addition to not accepting just any boat, we won’t accept just any instructor.

What’s more, our BPY staff is known for providing the best customer service experience in the marina. Blue Pacific Yachting will provide you with a top level/premier experience. Come see why BPY is the only ASA school in Marina del Rey with a top, 5-star Yelp score.

We look forward to helping you achieve your nautical goals. If you're just starting out, or hoping to increase your experience level and skillset, we'll get you there. Blue Pacific Yachting has served the Marina del Rey community for more than 30 years. With Sailing instruction, powerboating courses, trips to Catalina Island and the Channel Islands, yacht racing classes, spinnaker clinics, catamaran courses, docking clinics, instructor certification courses — we cover it all. Plus, we have a beautiful fleet of boats to bareboat charter. We are proud to be LA's premier boating destination.

I just took the three-day ASA 104 (bareboat) and ASA 114 (catamaran) course with instructor Greg. Organized as a trip from Marina del Rey to the isthmus of Catalina and back. The boat was gorgeous and in absolutely pristine condition. Greg did a great job balancing direct instruction with standing back to provide hands-on experience. His maneuvering drills among mooring buoys were particularly helpful. Maybe not the stuff of sailing fantasies, but getting your boat safely to its mooring without incident is in fact the foundation of a good sailing trip. These were not my home waters (I'm out of SF Bay), which was kind of the point. My classmates/shipmates were also from various places around the country. They were all pleasant and capable, which made it engaging to learn from each other. If you're serious about learning how to skipper well, and having fun while along the way, Blue Pacific is a good choice.

I just got back from an ASA 104/114 "certification weekend" and it was great. Our instructor was Greg, a former school teacher/administrator turned ASA instructor that provided a patient and calm approach to learning the material and practicing our skills. The boat we were on was excellent - a 2022 Leopard 45, which felt new in every way, and provided a very nice platform to learn from. I feel confident that I have the knowledge to charter one of these vessels, and now just need to gain additional experience and build out my sailing-resume as I practice my skills. I drove up from San Diego for this class and two others on board came even further - one from PA and another from OR, so no matter where you are - this class is worth the trip (just make sure to complete 101/103 prerequisites). Thanks Greg and Blue Pacific Yachting!

I just took the ASA 101 and 103 courses here and it was AMAZING!! I was familiar with sailboats but had never sailed myself and had been wanting to get certified for a long time. My instructor Jen was the absolute best. Her hands on way of teaching made me feel comfortable and confident the entire time. My crew was awesome and I had the best time out on the boat all day every day, it was SO much fun!! I highly recommend Blue Pacific if you're looking for sailing lessons!

For years, I've been wanting to build up my confidence in sailing. Instructor Jenn (and Greg too!) did just that! As well, BPY worked with me to get in both ASA 101/103 in a timely manner. Looking forward to more time on the water and mahalo to the confidence these guys instilled in me!

We had a great day at Sea with BPY. Our group of 15 rented a 75 footer. Things got pretty crazy once the Aux chord started to get passed and the white claws started to flow. The staff was amazing, cleaning as we were having fun eating cake and drinking and always making sure the fridge was stocked. They also helped load and unload the paddle boards. I was hoping to drive the boat - got Denied. Our outing was a little long, 6 hours at Sea in the heat was draining and fatiguing. Luckily there was indoor seating and tons of H2O

blue pacific yachting

Friendly, helpful staff. Nice sailboats in good condition. They didn't explain the parking well and lots require payment by a payment station, I got a ticket during the charter. Also, the web prices are low bc they don't include include the cleaning fee. We ended only being out for two hours and had to help furl the mainsail and boat up clean up.

Took the 101 class with them. Instructor was very knowledgeable and course was well organized. Felt much more comfortable with being on the water after.

Wife and I came into Marina del Ray for a long weekend and decided to take a day sail. Blue Pacific Yachting (Ruth) helped us all along the way. Even though we are avid sailors, we aren't from the area. Again, Ruth hooked us up with a very knowledgeable and personable Captain Alex. I would definitely recommend Blue Pacific Yachting

I started my sailing journey at Blue Pacific with absolutely zero experience and I am so happy that I choose them. I've since worked with several of their instructors and every one of them has been extremely knowledgeable, patient and has made practicing new skills fun. Their charter fleet is also excellent. A great place to learn to sail!

Outstanding charters! Outstanding service! We've chartered twice now and the concierge-like service is unmatched in the South Bay. Chartering the boat was so quick and easy both times. Both times we were met at the dock by the courteous and knowledgeable staff who walked me through a very thorough pre-sail inspection and walk-through, answering all of my questions. The boat, Dream Catcher (Dufour 560), is in impeccable condition and is obviously well-maintained. We have become members knowing that we have found a great organization who will meet all of our chartering needs.

Picture yourself gliding through the sparkling waters of Marina del Rey, the wind tugging at your sails, and the sun kissing your skin. Small crew sailing on a boat

Do you offer group classes?

Blue Pacific Yachting offers group and private courses. Most of the courses we offer are certified ASA (American Sailing Association) classes. We also offer certified US Powerboating courses. We run semi-private (2 people), private (1 person), family classes, and custom courses as well. Believe it or not, we offer these classes 365 days a year! We have weekday courses and weekend courses to fit everyone's needs. If our scheduled class dates don't work for you, and if you have a group of 3 or larger, or sign up for a private class, we can schedule the course around your schedule. We try to accommodate everyone and provide as many options as possible for our clients.

Sailboat in the ocean near an island

How many days to get certified and sail your own boat?

This depends on your goals. We have a building block approach. After your first class (Sailing - ASA 101, US Powerboating - Basic Powerboat Cruising), you'll be able to charter our smaller vessels (up to 28ft). The beginning level class lasts 2 full days. We also offer a confidence sail after you complete the course to give you extra practice with an instructor before you set sail on your own.  If your goal is to operate a slightly larger boat (up to 40ft), you'll want to then take our intermediate level class (Sailing - 103, Powerboating - Inshore Powerboat Cruising). This class lasts 3 full days. If your ultimate goal is to take our vessels to Catalina Island for a multi-day trip, you'll then want to move onto our ASA 104 course for a 3 day/ 2 night class. Most of our students combine this class with our catamaran course (ASA 114), so you will take one of our four beautiful catamarans to the island. I've taken this class myself a few times and highly recommend it! There's nothing like waking up on a boat, listening to the waves, and watching the sunrise over the island.

Bow of sailboat in the ocean

On what kind of sailboat do you learn?

You will start out on our 25ft sailboats with an outboard engine. We recommend starting out on a small vessel due to the fact you feel the vessel respond much faster than a larger vessel. As soon as you make an adjustment to the tiller (steering), the vessel immediately responds. Also, you will feel the change in direction and speed when sheeting in the sails and sheeting them out. Lastly, body weight affects how the vessel sails... if you move weight to windward/leeward/forward/aft (all sailing terms you will learn in class!), you will see how that helps steer the boat, speed up the boat, etc.   As for our powerboating program, you will start out on a 28ft sports cruiser.

People on a sailboat docked in a harbor

How would someone get to “practice” sailing? Is there a membership or some way to rent boats from you once someone gets certified?

In terms of practice, yes, we highly recommend that once our students complete their classes, they should come back as soon as possible while the material is fresh in their minds and practice. Students can either sign up for 3-hour confidence sails, come back with fellow students to rent, or practice with family and friends on our smaller vessels. We do offer a membership which helps bring down the costs of classes and charters. For example, our members get to take our 25ft vessels out for as little as $99 per day! We do this to encourage our members to keep up their skillset and so they have plenty of opportunities to get out on the water... even if it's just for a couple hours after work on a beautiful summer day. As for our powerboating program, our clients can rent our 28ft sports cruiser for as little as 2-hours so they can also practice and enjoy some time on the water. Our membership will give them access to lower pricing.

Sailboat in Marina del Rey channel during sunset with clouds

What makes Marina del Rey a good spot for learning to sail?

Marina del Rey is a great place to learn how to sail! Did you know, Marina del Rey is the second largest man-made marina in the world! The marina was designed and built with wind direction in mind, so sailors can easily sail in and out. For beginners, you can spend all day just sailing around inside the marina if you are not yet ready for ocean sailing. The conditions are ideal... average wind speed is between 5kts - 10kts (for non-sailors, this means you have just enough wind to go sailing, but not too much where it is overwhelming). The Santa Monica Bay coastline is beautiful... head north and you will pass the iconic Santa Monica pier (and see the Hollywood sign in the distance!) and then up to beautiful Malibu. Head south and you will hit Palos Verdes cliffs and do some whale watching! Or head southwest and you will hit Catalina Island... a very popular destination for our students and charter clients! During wintertime, you can sail within the marina and see the snowcapped mountains in the distance. We are very lucky to be in a climate (65-to-75-degree average) where you can sail 365 days/year!

blue pacific yachting

Anything else you should know about learning to sail?

Everyone learns differently and at different speeds. ASA has designed their sailing program to reach all types of learners... kinesthetic, audio, and visual. Their award-winning textbooks were developed by passionate sailing professionals. There are also quizzes and glossaries to help readers quickly pick up nautical terminology. Plus, the on the water drills will give you plenty of repetition and practice. If you feel you need more practice before setting sail on your own, you can purchase additional confidence sails so you can practice with an instructor until you feel ready.
