Positive Customer Review: "One of the most memorable parts for me was the launch. I went with my wife, and Benetti had a Roman Catholic priest bless the yacht. It was very beautiful with all the Italian music and then the British national anthem, and it was all very unexpected. I thought I was just going to be putting the boat in the water, but in fact it turned into a very emotional day!" - Owner of a Benetti called motor yacht 11:11

40.8m Benetti Oasis superyacht Joy launched

nauticanews

The second superyacht in Benetti’s Oasis 40.8 metre superyacht series has hit the water.

benetti joy yacht

Designed by British studio RWD in collaboration with Benetti, the Oasis 40 superyacht has a beam of 8.5 metres, draft of 2.14 metres and a 385GT interior designed by New York firm Bonetti/ Kozerski Architecture.

Sold to a new Benetti owner who “fell in love at first sight” with the model, Joy features a number of custom features, including an advanced wi-fi remote control system, which allows the boat to be moored from the stern area without the need to be in the wheelhouse.

Elsewhere, the yacht features a vertical bow, full-height glazing in the wheelhouse and automotive inspired design features, including silver paint around the perimeter of the windows. The beach club is described as the “focal point for life on board” and can be used for pre-dinner aperitifs or as an open-air cinema, as specified by the owner. Once the two wings are opened out, the beach area expands to 90 square metres with a width of 11 metres.

Accommodation is for a total of 10 guests and four cabins for seven crew members, including the captain.

BO102 is the second unit of Oasis 40M, a glamorous yacht designed to cultivate a dynamic and informal lifestyle on board, in seamless contact with nature. The exterior styling is by UK design firm RWD and the interiors are the work of Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture, based in New York.

A multifunction beach area offers 90 square metres of openness just a few steps from the water’s surface. The yacht extends across four decks, offering a total of five staterooms for 10 guests and four cabins for seven crew members, including the captain.

March 31 saw the launch of M/Y “JOY”, the second unit of the Oasis 40M, an innovative 40-metre fibreglass yacht with a series of specially requested custom features. The owner, a first-time Benetti buyer, supervised the design and production of the yacht firsthand and expressed his satisfaction at the result delivered by the Shipyard, which has once again demonstrated the unparalleled construction capabilities that make it a unique testimonial of Made in Italy excellence worldwide

The exterior styling of Oasis 40M is the perfect combination of Italian refinement and classic English lines designed by the UK-based RWD.  The vertical bow, the full-height glazing in the wheelhouse, and the automotive industry-inspired style accents (like the silver paint around the perimeter of the windows) give the yacht an energy-filled look, while the wide open spaces in the stern dedicated to an outdoor lifestyle reveal her glamorous spirit.

The beach area is powerfully innovative, taking the form of a terrace with no physical or visual barriers and designed as a multifunctional space. This area is perfect during the day as a focal point for life on board, and in the evening as an elegant salon, the ideal setting for a pre-dinner aperitif, or even an open-air cinema, as requested by the owner. With the two side wings open, the total walk-on surface of the beach area rises to 90 square metres and its width to a maximum of 11 meters (the hull has a beam of 8.5 metres). On each side, three steps lead up to the main lounge, which is entered through a large sliding door for seamless continuity between the exterior and interior spaces. The beach area also has no stairway to the upper decks, which can be reached from the side walkways or from inside the yacht. The garage is on the starboard side to avoid any interference with this area.

The interiors designed for informal comfort by New York firm Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture are reminiscent of an elegant open space loft. Large glazed surfaces and glass doors help blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The design of the Main Deck on “JOY” features a big lounge with two side windows in the dining area, made up of three sections that can be opened. On the port side of the ship, a door provides access to the galley. From here the crew can move to the accommodation in the bow on the Lower Deck and to the upper decks, using separate routes to protect the owner’s privacy. The master suite, entered from the aft starboard side of the main lounge, is preceded by a refined private study customised with smart glass. Also at the owner’s request, the suite has the added convenience of its own cosy terrace on the starboard side, while a central corridor leads to the dressing area and bathroom, both divided into his and hers areas.

The Upper Deck features a futuristic wheelhouse, with a bridge designed as a multifunctional space in which to enjoy the cruising experience to the full, with comfortable seating for six people and full-height glazing for 180-degree views. On the same deck, the personalised Sky Lounge has a fully appointed gym with a window that opens completely and a lounge area with a sofa and television.

An understated stairway amidships leads up to the Sun Deck, which is furnished with a bar and a sunpad. The Lower Deck offers four double cabins for guests with ensuite bathrooms.

The many distinctive features of “JOY” include an advanced wi-fi remote control system that means the boat can be moored from the stern area without needing to be in the wheelhouse, and the installation of outdoor loudspeakers to play music, confirming the owner’s desire to use the yacht for socialising, something to which she lends herself perfectly.

The hull – designed by Pierluigi Ausonio’s firm P.L.A.N.A. in partnership with the shipyard – has a plumb bow and a top speed of 18 knots.

The boat is built according to the highest technical and construction standards on the market, and with an attention to detail and every aspect of construction that can also be seen in the care taken over air quality (oxygenation, humidity and temperature) in the interior closed spaces, where a treatment system ensures that the air is always fresh and clean, with up to six changes per hour.

benetti joy yacht

The interior lines and design is drawn by New York-based Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture. The exterior on the other hand like on the first hull has been penned by RWD. This vessel's appeal is really located on the aft deck where the beach club is spacious and at one with the water and atmosphere. Aiding this are the two fold-down side bulwarks which expand the beach club area from 8.5-meters to 11-meters of useable space. The space measures around 90 square meters.

benetti joy yacht

Benetti says the top speed for Joy should be around 18-knots as a result partly because of the hull design, finessed by Pierluigi Ausonio’s firm P.L.A.N.A. in partnership with the shipyard. At economical speeds the Benetti Oasis 40 should have a range approaching 4,000 nautical miles. Other features onboard include a Gym, Pool, skylounge and thanks to her remote controlled wifi system the captain can control the vessel for maneuvering or med-style mooring from the stern rather than the bridge. papa joe benetti yacht launch

Papa Joe: seventh unit in Benetti's Diamond 44M series launched

Benetti has launched the seventh unit in its Diamond 44M series, named Papa Joe , from its Viareggio shipyard. The ceremony saw the presence of the shipyard’s management, as well as the mayor and the port authorities, to celebrate the descent of the vessel into the water.

The 44.1-metre yacht's imposing and solemn external lines are the work of Giorgio M. Cassetta , while the contemporary and welcoming interior design is in-house. Papa Joe was built as a family boat whose owner wanted to make it his "second home", and his contribution is evident in the design – including the inclusion of the Rosewood Santos accents, characterised by veins that create particular designs in contrast with the main essence of oak.

A tranquil colour scheme is created through a blend of light, neutral-toned soft furniture and turquoise accents throughout. The yacht sleeps 12 guests across five cabins, and there are five cabins for a crew of seven people in addition to the captain.

The main deck features an owner's suite with an adjacent office area as well as a large, functional formal dining room. The combination of crew and guest footpaths and a rack room, which doubles as an audio-video space and a service passage for the crew, enhances privacy on board.

Meanwhile, up top, there is an area entirely dedicated to the captain with a wheelhouse and private cabin, as well as a spacious skylounge. A cinema room is characterised by a sofa in the centre, where guests can both enjoy a film with family or admire the sea view towards the stern. Outside at the bow of the upper deck, a generous sunpad, U-shaped sofa and custom hydromassage pool enhance guest comfort.

Particular attention has been paid to the layout of the yacht to maximise indoor and outdoor spaces, including the transom that reveals an elegant beach club area. The space is fully equipped and features a lounge sofa and bar with a sliding smoked glass door overlooking the sea. At the stern, a spacious garage can house a six-metre tender and two jet skis.

The 471 GT yacht is powered by twin MAN engines and reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots.

Omsk. Irtysh River, morning panorama with rainbow. Foreground: K. A. Batiushkin mansion (residence of Admiral Alexander Kolchak in 1919). September 19, 1999

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian chemist and photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for vivid color photography. His vision of photography as a form of education and enlightenment was demonstrated with special clarity through his images of architectural monuments in the historic sites throughout the Russian heartland.

In June 1912, Prokudin-Gorsky ventured into western Siberia as part of a commission to document the Kama-Tobolsk Waterway, a link between the European and Asian sides of the Ural Mountains. The town of Tyumen served as his launching point for productive journeys that included Shchadrinsk (established in 1662 on the Iset River) and Yalutorovsk (on the Tobol River).

Founded in 1659 at a former Tatar settlement, Yalutorovsk was the construction site of a massive railroad bridge across the Tobol River, part of the new Tyumen-Omsk rail link that opened on the Trans-Siberian Railway in October 1913 (Before then, the railroad to Siberia went through the southern Urals town of Chelyabinsk ).

Although Prokudin-Gorsky did not travel to Omsk, his photographs of Yalutorovsk show the making of a crucial rail link to the “capital” of western Siberia. I, however, reached Omsk in the late Summer of 1999.

Omsk (current population around 1,110,000) was founded in 1716 as a fort on the middle reaches of the Irtysh River. During the 18th century, its primary purpose was to protect Russia’s southern border and establish authority over the aboriginal steppe tribes.

Rising regional importance

Although administratively subordinate to Tobolsk throughout the 18th century, Omsk gained increasing power in the 19th century. From 1808 until 1917, Omsk served as the headquarters of all Siberian Cossack troops and, in 1822, a separate Omsk Province was formed.

Shortly thereafter, construction began on the Cossack Cathedral of St. Nicholas (1833-1840), based on a plan by the noted Russian architect Vasily Stasov. The St. Nicholas Cathedral was severely disfigured during the Soviet period, but has now been restored. It is, once again, the repository of one of the area’s great relics, the banner of Yermak , the late 16th-century Cossack leader who first established Muscovy’s presence in Siberia.

In 1865-1870, Omsk witnessed the construction of another cathedral, dedicated to the Elevation of the Cross. It, too, survived the devastation of the 1930s and was reopened for worship in November 1943. In addition to its Orthodox churches, Omsk has mosques (the administration of the Iman of Siberia is located in Omsk), a remarkable wooden synagogue and a large Baptist church built in 1907.

Omsk’s dark history

Its pervasive military presence linked Omsk with the Siberian exile system. The most famous of the fortress’ exiles was the writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, condemned in 1849 for associating with intellectual “radicals” in St. Petersburg. In January 1850, Dostoevsky arrived under guard at the Omsk fort and, for the most part of three years (1850-54), he lived the harrowing existence of a convict sentenced to hard labor, which included unloading barges on the Irtysh River.

When his health broke down under the physical and psychological strain, Dostoevsky was hospitalized under the care of a sympathetic medic. It was during his stay in the infirmary that Dostoevsky began the writing of one of his seminal works, ‘Notes from the House of the Dead’. A few buildings still survive from that time, including one of the fortress gates.

During the latter part of the 19th century, Omsk began a period of heady expansion, as the town became a transportation center for Russia’s vast interior. Regular steamboat service along the Irtysh River to Tobolsk began in 1862.

But, it was the railroads that made Omsk a boomtown. In 1894-1895, Omsk was linked by the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Chelyabinsk in the west and Novonikolaevsk (later Novosibirsk) in the east. In 1913, another rail line was completed from Omsk to Tyumen in what would become the new Siberian mainline. By the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Omsk had tripled to over 60,000 inhabitants.

This development as a transportation nexus led to a surge in the city’s commercial district.  What had formerly been a provincial garrison town consisting primarily of wooden structures punctuated with large churches, now became a preeminent site for banks, educational institutions, industry and retail trade in Siberia.

International appeal

In addition to branch offices for major banks and firms in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Omsk received investment from companies in the United States, Germany and Great Britain. The central part of Omsk had buildings whose design rivaled Moscow’s business district. Many of the new commercial projects were built in styles derived from the Florentine Renaissance.

Cultural institutions also took root. In 1901-05, a large theater was built in a florid Beaux Arts style designed by the architect Iliodor Khvorinov. The theater still stands as an object of civic pride. Wooden houses with decorative detailing also grace the city, but their number has steadily decreased under the pressures of urban development and inadequate maintenance.

During World War I, the then strategically located Omsk grew still further and, by 1917, the city’s population had reached 100,000. Following the October Revolution, Bolshevik power was proclaimed almost immediately in Omsk, but, with little local support, the Bolsheviks were driven from the city in June 1918.

Opposition to the Bolsheviks was fatally divided and, in November 1918, a military coup installed a dictatorship headed by Admiral Alexander Kolchak (1874-1920), a renowned polar explorer and gifted naval commander, but incapable of dealing with the chaos of the Russian civil war (The mansion where Kolchak had his headquarters is a prominent landmark).

For almost a year, Omsk could be considered the “capital” of the White forces in the Russian Civil War. In November 1919, Kolchak’s forces were driven from Omsk. In 1921, Omsk became one of the centers of the American Relief Agency during the terrible famine that afflicted vast territories in the Volga basin.

With its economy shattered and the countryside still recovering, Omsk struggled through the 1920s and achieved renewed industrial growth in the 1930s. Like many Siberian cities, it expanded rapidly during World War II as an evacuation haven and as a center of transportation and production.

Development of the city’s military-industrial complex continued after the war and, by the end of the 1970s, the population exceeded 1,000,000 – a benchmark of major significance. Omsk also became a center of the oil and gas industry.

The city’s major cultural institutions include a leading state university, established in 1974 and, since 2004, named in honor of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Omsk also has one of the largest regional libraries in Siberia and a major art museum--named in honor of painter Mikhail Vrubel, an Omsk native – that now occupies three landmark buildings in the center of the city.

In the early 20th century, Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky developed a complex process for color photography. Between 1903 and 1916, he traveled through the Russian Empire and took over 2,000 photographs with the process, which involved three exposures on a glass plate. In August 1918, he left Russia and ultimately resettled in France, where he was reunited with a large part of his collection of glass negatives, as well as 13 albums of contact prints. After his death in Paris in 1944, his heirs sold the collection to the Library of Congress. In the early 21st century, the Library digitized the Prokudin-Gorsky Collection and made it freely available to the global public. A few Russian websites now have versions of the collection. In 1986, the architectural historian and photographer William Brumfield organized the first exhibit of Prokudin-Gorsky photographs at the Library of Congress. Over a period of work in Russia beginning in 1970, Brumfield has photographed most of the sites visited by Prokudin-Gorsky. This series of articles juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky’s views of architectural monuments with photographs taken by Brumfield decades later.
