How Much Does It Cost To Buy A Yacht?

If you're new to owning a boat and want to experience the luxury lifestyle, buying a yacht is the perfect way to indulge yourself while also creating unforgettable memories on the water. From anchoring at a secluded island in the Caribbean to cruising the coastline enjoying the fall colors, yacht ownership opens up limitless possibilities to explore the beauty of Mother Nature. It can also create quite the adrenaline rush if a sportfishing boat is more your style. There are many benefits to hiring a professional yacht broker when you plan on buying your first yacht including having someone on your side when evaluating the right price, for the right vessel.

So how much does it cost to buy a yacht on average? In 2021, the average selling price of a yacht is approximately $640,000, with prices ranging from $300,000 to over $15,000,000. This average selling price represents all pre-owned boats from 40-feet to 100-feet, power (not sail), and sold in the Southeastern United States, including the large Florida market. The data collected for this sales price was from the boating industry's MLS system.

This 50-foot flybridge yacht (seen below) was sold around the average selling price mentioned above and is a good example of what you can expect when spending over $500k . It features several bedrooms for overnight trips, a galley, a nice flybridge seating area, and a lot of comforts you would find at home.

A yacht can mean vastly different things to different people depending on their style of boating, where they live, what they plan to do on the boat, and the amount of equipment they choose. A 50-foot yacht can vary in price by several hundred thousand dollars depending on how new it is, its engines, brand, and amenities. Having a conversation about your needs and budget with a professional yacht broker can answer all of these questions and take the guesswork out of your search. 

While the average price of a yacht sold in the Southeast this year is $640,000, buyers can find yachts for less if they are willing to go a bit older and/or a bit smaller.

• According to the list of 2021 sold boats, the average selling price for yachts between 40 and 50 feet was $329,000.
• Yachts under 40 feet are generally called cruising boats and can still feature a lot of the same amenities found on larger vessels.
• How much does a small yacht cost? Examples of active boats on the market right now show a sizeable difference in price depending on the length and year. For example, a 2021 40-foot Intrepid boat is listed for over $800,000 , while a 2011 Intrepid 40 is listed for under $400,000 .

The larger, newer, and more extravagant yachts can cost $5 million and higher. Forbes.com identifies a superyacht as a vessel ranging from "79 feet to more than 590 feet in length." The average selling price in 2021 for yachts over 100-feet, according to the industry MLS database, came in at just under $1 million. Of course, there were several superyachts that were between $10 million and $50 million on the list.

A prime example of a superyacht would be " ANTITHESIS ", a Horizon Yachts 136 that had an asking price of $7,990,000 at the time of sale. This superyacht featured 5 luxury staterooms, a pilothouse with full electronics suite, a jacuzzi, sauna, 2 water-makers, 2 generators, and a lot more top-end equipment. Yacht owners looking to cruise long distances or possibly turn the vessel into a yacht charter business would be interested in a boat of this stature.

The cost of a yacht is not the only cost to consider. Purchasing your new boat is the largest upfront expense, however, there are also the costs of owning a yacht that need to be considered. This is again where hiring an experienced, professional yacht broker can really pay dividends and take a lot of the stress out of the process. Things like insurance, storage, routine maintenance, captain and crew salaries, all need to be factored in to your expectations. As you begin to figure out exactly what type of boating you want to enjoy, as well to learn the advantages and disadvantages of different boat types, you can begin to narrow down the selection process.

With so many factors to determine how much it costs to buy a yacht and maintain it, it is in the best interest of boat buyers of this magnitude to speak with a certified professional yacht broker. "Pricing a yacht in this market can be a difficult thing," said Brian T. Franc , CPYB and manager of United's Emerald Coast Division. "Pre-owned prices are definitely inflated due to lack of inventory, but there are still some great opportunities if you are fast and have someone watching the market daily on your behalf. How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

This yacht is 53′ 10″ long and weighs 75,000 pounds! It has twin diesel engines, 1,300 hp each, cruising speed of 35 mph.

It has a 1200-gallon fuel capacity with three staterooms. It sleeps up to 6 people, so it is perfect for entertaining without being so large to the point where maintenance becomes very difficult. It is known for its great propulsion rates and is very smooth and agile.

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.

It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities. 

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

• swimming pools,
• water toys,
• diving and fishing poles,
• fully furnished rooms,
• helicopter landing pads,
• and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

• What does your perfect day on the water look like?
• How long will your average day on the water be?
• Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
• Will you use the yacht for fishing?
• Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
• How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
• Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
• Where will you dock the yacht?
• How much boating experience do you have?
• How fast do you want the yacht to go?
• How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew. 

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

• The size of the yacht
• The age of the yacht
• The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

• Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
• Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
• Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

TRUE STORY is a FP Victoria 67. Newly built and launched in 2016. She is a great addition to Fountaine Pajot's top-of-the-line luxury cruising cats. She's sleek, elegant, and extremely spacious with an overall length of 67 feet and beam of 31 feet; truly, the ultimate in cruising comfort. The flybridge is nothing short of magnificence. It is accessed from the cockpit with stairs on both sides. For guests aboard who have come to relax, the seating area is incredibly comfortable with benches, side tables, a relaxing sofa, and the convenience of a wet bar. A large bimini provides an area of escape from the sun for those who want some shade and there is integrated lighting for evening cocktails. All enjoyed with awesome views of the surrounding scenery. The large aft deck is shaded by the flybridge overhead and provides additional comfortable lounging spaces, as well as an elegant setting for formal dining. Two large sumptuous pads are optimal for relaxing. Step into the saloon which features lots of space for comfortable entertaining in air-conditioned comfort if so desired. Captain Martin Liscinsky & Chef Tamara Chepel Martin Liscinsky Originally from a city close to the Tatra mountains in Slovakia, Martin has always had a passion for adventure, sports and the great outdoors. He grew up mountain biking, white water rafting, climbing and would try any other sport he could involve himself in. At age 13 Martin travelled to Croatia where he was introduced to sailing - he was totally hooked on the sport and lifestyle. Martin moved to the UK aged 18 to begin a career as a chef which took him all over Europe including Switzerland, Scotland, France and Slovakia. He worked in high class fine dining restaurants and enjoyed the creativity and travel associated with being a chef. Despite enjoying his nice and successful career, Martins heart was still dreaming about being on the sea. When he realized he loves sailing more than cooking, he decided for a change and moved to Croatia to join the yachting industry. What was supposed be one season job became a lifestyle and Martin had never been happier. Being a Captain fulfilled everything he could dream of: freedom, traveling, outdoors and still bit of cooking, especially when the steaks are on the grill! Tamara Chepel Originally from Australia, Tamara was brought up in the city of Sydney. Her parents had a passion for food, travel and entertaining, most weekends were spent with family and friends either enjoying the outdoors, exploring her grandparent’s farm or joining big family gatherings – all of which was based around food, feasting, making a bonfire or BBQ and spending time together. These memories strongly shaped Tamara’s love for chartering and cheffing- there really is nothing more magical than sharing a delicious meal with family and friends in a beautiful place! Prior to finding yachting Tamara studied at university and had a career as an Occupational Therapist in Sydney and London. However a few years into her career it was too late to shake off the travel bug and on a trip to Croatia she met Martin – who invited her to join him in his escapades and she never looked back! Tamara and Martin met in Croatia in 2018 in the small town of Korcula. They quickly realised that despite being from different sides of the world they shared the same love for travel, sailing, experiencing different cultures (and food!), the ocean and being around family and friends. They backpacked Asia for seven months as the first real relationship test then returned to the Mediterranean where they worked on sailing yachts in Greece, Croatia, Italy, Turkey and Montenegro. After two seasons of enjoying the Mediterranean they set off to the Caribbean where they have worked in the British Virgin islands and some surrounding Caribbean countries including St Martin and Antigua. Tamara and Martin feel as though they have the best job in the world, chartering yachts and experiencing the ocean in all its glorious beauty while meeting new and returning guests and preparing wholesome meals to match the experience! Time spent with Tamara and Martin on True Story will follow the philosophy that a perfect charter includes sailing, exploring, relaxing and truly taking the time to experience the islands in the way which suits their guests. They create a relaxed and welcoming and safe environment, aiming to make the charter personalised to each guests needs. Tamara and Martin have a passion for underwater life and believe the world below is one of the best things about the BVI! They backpacked Asia for seven months as the first real relationship test then returned to the Mediterranean where they worked on sailing yachts in Greece, Croatia, Italy, Turkey and Montenegro. After two seasons of enjoying the Mediterranean they set off to the Caribbean where they have worked in the British Virgin islands and some surrounding Caribbean countries including St Martin and Antigua. Tamara and Martin feel as though they have the best job in the world, chartering yachts and experiencing the ocean in all its glorious beauty while meeting new and returning guests and preparing wholesome meals to match the experience! <br /> <br /> Time spent with Tamara and Martin on True Story will follow the philosophy that a perfect charter includes sailing, exploring, relaxing and truly taking the time to experience the islands in the way which suits their guests. At age 13 Martin travelled to Croatia where he was introduced to sailing - he was totally hooked on the sport and lifestyle. Martin moved to the UK aged 18 to begin a career as a chef which took him all over Europe including Switzerland, Scotland, France and Slovakia. He worked in high class fine dining restaurants and enjoyed the creativity and travel associated with being a chef. Despite enjoying his nice and successful career, Martins heart was still dreaming about being on the sea. When he realized he loves sailing more than cooking, he decided for a change and moved to Croatia to join the yachting industry. What was supposed be one season job became a lifestyle and Martin had never been happier. Being a Captain fulfilled everything he could dream of: freedom, traveling, outdoors and still bit of cooking, especially when the steaks are on the grill! <br /> <br /> Tamara Chepel<br /> Originally from Australia, Tamara was brought up in the city of Sydney. Her parents had a passion for food, travel and entertaining, most weekends were spent with family and friends either enjoying the outdoors, exploring her grandparent’s farm or joining big family gatherings – all of which was based around food, feasting, making a bonfire or BBQ and spending time together. These memories strongly shaped Tamara’s love for chartering and cheffing- there really is nothing more magical than sharing a delicious meal with family and friends in a beautiful place! Prior to finding yachting Tamara studied at university and had a career as an Occupational Therapist in Sydney and London. However a few years into her career it was too late to shake off the travel bug and on a trip to Croatia she met Martin – who invited her to join him in his escapades and she never looked back! <br /> <br /> Tamara and Martin met in Croatia in 2018 in the small town of Korcula. They quickly realised that despite being from different sides of the world they shared the same love for travel, sailing, experiencing different cultures (and food!), the ocean and being around family and friends. They backpacked Asia for seven months as the first real relationship test then returned to the Mediterranean where they worked on sailing yachts in Greece, Croatia, Italy, Turkey and Montenegro. After two seasons of enjoying the Mediterranean they set off to the Caribbean where they have worked in the British Virgin islands and some surrounding Caribbean countries including St Martin and Antigua. Tamara and Martin feel as though they have the best job in the world, chartering yachts and experiencing the ocean in all its glorious beauty while meeting new and returning guests and preparing wholesome meals to match the experience! <br /> <br /> Time spent with Tamara and Martin on True Story will follow the philosophy that a perfect charter includes sailing, exploring, relaxing and truly taking the time to experience the islands in the way which suits their guests. What a magical week we had aboard True Story the week of Christmas. Some of the trip highlights were swimming with dolphins in Brewer’s Bay, scuba diving for lobster near Caneel Bay, paddling in Magen’s Bay, and tubing at dusk in Rendezvous Bay. <br /> <br /> Each night we laughed and celebrated the day during Captain’s Cocktail Hour, where the adults enjoyed exquisite cocktails made by the captain and an amazing platter of hors d'oeuvres from Noa, all while enjoying 360-degree sunset views from the fly-bridge. <br /> <br /> The food on our charter was also exceptional and led to many recipe requests. Pleasing the adults with delicious meals that are beautifully plated was one thing; however, winning over the group of picky kid-eaters was arguably the harder task. Noa easily delivered on both challenges and did so with a smile and with no visible stress. Her patience and love of the children was impossible to miss throughout the week. <br /> <br /> In Summary, our time on True Story was easily one of our best and most memorable vacations to date. He has a long<br /> history within the maritime world, both professionally and personally. <br /> <br /> Born in Namibia and having grown up in a small coastal fishing town called Velddrif in South Africa, the ocean is<br /> his second home. He is an avid fisherman whose spearfishing game is strong as is his<br /> freediving and sense of humor.<br /> <br /> Once he finished school, Jaco completed his Maritime Studies where he worked his way up<br /> the ladder from Cadet to Chief Mate Unlimited on different vessels ranging from chemical<br /> tankers to mining vessels, circling the globe at least four times, until he entered the yachting<br /> industry in Monaco as Mate and Master.<br /> <br /> Simóne, Jaco’s wife and right-hand woman, loves snorkeling and taking underwater footage.<br /> She has a passion for cooking, watching sunsets and sailing the waters. Born in South Africa,<br /> partly raised in England and partly raised in a small surf town in South Africa, Jeffreys Bay,<br /> she learned that life along the coast is where her heart and soul was meant to be. <br /> <br /> After completing school, she moved to Cape Town where she studied at Stellenbosch University<br /> and completed three degrees within the Arts and Humanities field, completing her Masters<br /> in General Linguistics and tutoring at the University in her final year at Uni. <br /> She then moved to the big city and started working in Digital Marketing and Tourism.<br /> <br /> After meeting her now, husband, Jaco, she discovered her love of boating and fell in love with life at sea. Captain Chino and First Mate Noa are truly gifted at what they do. They made us feel right at home and relaxed from the moment we set foot on the boat until we sadly had to say our goodbyes at the end of the week. <br /> <br /> True Story is like a floating villa that is equipped to make your trip as relaxing or as action packed as you’d like. Chino and Noa were effortlessly able to accommodate our entire group as we all engaged in different activities, including stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba, fishing, and tubing behind the dinghy. Each day brought us to a new gorgeous location and a new adventure. <br /> <br /> The kids loved experiencing the transit sails either from the dolphin seats or the nets, occasionally getting splashed or happily getting drenched by a quick passing tropical rain burst. Some of the trip highlights were swimming with dolphins in Brewer’s Bay, scuba diving for lobster near Caneel Bay, paddling in Magen’s Bay, and tubing at dusk in Rendezvous Bay. <br /> <br /> Each night we laughed and celebrated the day during Captain’s Cocktail Hour, where the adults enjoyed exquisite cocktails made by the captain and an amazing platter of hors d'oeuvres from Noa, all while enjoying 360-degree sunset views from the fly-bridge. <br /> <br /> The food on our charter was also exceptional and led to many recipe requests. Pleasing the adults with delicious meals that are beautifully plated was one thing; however, winning over the group of picky kid-eaters was arguably the harder task. Noa easily delivered on both challenges and did so with a smile and with no visible stress. Her patience and love of the children was impossible to miss throughout the week. <br /> <br /> In Summary, our time on True Story was easily one of our best and most memorable vacations to date. When not cruising Love Story has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. Also there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. In addition there are wakeboards so guests can show off at speed. If that isn't enough Love Story also features canoes, fishing equipment, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment.

Love Story is available upon request for charter this winter. She is already accepting bookings this summer for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Samsung’s best folding phone, I’d say, is the Galaxy Z Flip5. And it’s now available for the lowest-ever price for the model with 512GB storage. That’s more useful than the base 256GB capacity and the new offer brings it down to the full price of the 256GB version. Here are the details.

Right now at Amazon , the 512GB version has dropped by $220 to $899.99, which is the lowest price yet for this model and is a 20% price cut. The black option, called graphite, is nearly always the most popular, and is around $5 cheaper still, at $894.97, while the cream finish—my favorite color in this range, for what it’s worth—is 22% off, $250 off the original price at $869.99.

Amazon also has the 256GB model at significantly reduced prices, too. The cream and lavender colors are available with a $100 reduction, just over 10%, off the $999.99 price, bringing it down to $899.99. The mint 256GB model has 15%, or around $150 off, selling for $849.97. And the biggest price drop is for the graphite option, with 17% or $165 off, meaning it retails for $834.99.

The next Flip and Fold phones from Samsung are expected to be announced in the coming months, perhaps as soon as late July, if last year’s calendar is matched.

That’s a good three or four months away, in all likelihood, so these excellent prices could be tempting.

Price of zero-day exploits rises as companies harden products against hackers

A startup is now offering millions of dollars for tools to hack iphones, android devices, whatsapp, and imessage.

Tools that allow government hackers to break into iPhones and Android phones, popular software like the Chrome and Safari browsers, and chat apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, are now worth millions of dollars — and their price has multiplied in the last few years as these products get harder to hack.

On Monday, startup Crowdfense published its updated price list for these hacking tools, which are commonly known as “zero-days” because they rely on unpatched vulnerabilities in software that are unknown to the makers of that software. Companies like Crowdfense and one of its competitors, Zerodium, claim to acquire these zero-days with the goal of reselling them to other organizations, usually government agencies or government contractors, which claim they need the hacking tools to track or spy on criminals.

Crowdfense is now offering between $5 million and $7 million for zero-days to break into iPhones; up to $5 million for zero-days to break into Android phones; up to $3 million and $3.5 million for Chrome and Safari zero-days, respectively; and $3 million to $5 million for WhatsApp and iMessage zero-days.

In its previous price list , published in 2019, the highest payouts that Crowdfense was offering were $3 million for Android and iOS zero-days.

The increase in prices comes as companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft are making it harder to hack their devices and apps, which means their users are better protected.

“It should be harder year over year to exploit whatever software we’re using, whatever devices we’re using,” said Dustin Childs, who is the head of threat awareness at Trend Micro ZDI. Unlike Crowdfense and Zerodium, ZDI pays researchers to acquire zero-days, then reports them to the companies affected with the goal of getting the vulnerabilities fixed.

“As more zero-day vulnerabilities are discovered by threat intelligence teams like Google’s, and platform protections continue to improve, the time and effort required from attackers increases, resulting in an increase in cost for their findings,” said Shane Huntley, the head of Google’s Threat Analysis Group, which tracks hackers and the use of zero-days.

In a report last month , Google said it saw hackers use 97 zero-day vulnerabilities in the wild in 2023. Spyware vendors, which often work with zero-day brokers, were responsible for 75% of zero-days targeting Google products and Android, according to the company.

People in and around the zero-day industry agree that the job of exploiting vulnerabilities is getting harder.

David Manouchehri, a security analyst with knowledge of the zero-day market, said that “hard targets like Google’s Pixel and the iPhone have been becoming harder to hack every year. I expect the cost to continue to increase significantly over time.”

“The mitigations that vendors are implementing are working, and it’s leading the whole trade to become much more complicated, much more time-consuming, and so clearly this is then reflected in the price,” Paolo Stagno, the director of research at Crowdfense, told TechCrunch.

Stagno explained that in 2015 or 2016, it was possible for only one researcher to find one or more zero-days and develop them into a full-fledged exploit targeting iPhones or Androids. Now, he said, “this thing is almost impossible,” as it requires a team of several researchers, which also causes prices to go up.

Crowdfense currently offers the highest publicly known prices to date outside of Russia, where a company called Operation Zero announced last year that it was willing to pay up to $20 million for tools  to hack iPhones and Android devices. The prices in Russia, however, may be inflated because of the war in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions, which could discourage or outright prevent people from dealing with a Russian company.

Outside of the public view, it’s possible that governments and companies are paying even higher prices.

“The prices Crowdfense is offering researchers for individual Chrome [Remote Code Execution] and [Sandbox Escape] exploits are below market rate from what I have seen in the zero-day industry,” said Manouchehri, who previously worked at Linchpin Labs, a startup that focused on developing and selling zero-days. Linchpin Labs was acquired by U.S. defense contractor L3 Technologies (now known as L3Harris ) in 2018.

Alfonso de Gregorio, the founder of Zeronomicon , an Italy-based startup that acquires zero-days, agreed, telling TechCrunch that prices could “certainly” be higher.

Zero-days have been used in court-approved law enforcement operations. In 2016, the FBI used a zero-day provided by a startup called Azimuth to break into the iPhone of one of the shooters who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, according to The Washington Post . In 2020, Motherboard revealed that the FBI — with the help of Facebook and an unnamed third-party company — used a zero-day to track down a man who was later convicted for harassing and extorting young girls online.

There have also been several cases where zero-days and spyware have allegedly been used to target human rights dissidents and journalists in Ethiopia , Morocco , Saudi Arabia , and the United Arab Emirates , among other countries with poor human rights records. There have also been similar cases of alleged abuse in democratic countries like Greece , Mexico , Poland , and Spain . (Neither Crowdfense, Zerodium, or Zeronomicon, have ever been accused of being involved in similar cases.)

Zero-day brokers, as well as spyware companies like NSO Group and Hacking Team have often been criticized for selling its products to unsavory governments. In response, some of them now pledge to respect export controls in an effort to limit potential abuses from their customers.

Stagno said that Crowdfense follows the embargoes and sanctions imposed by the United States — even if the company is based in the United Arab Emirates. For example, Stagno said that the company wouldn’t sell to Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Russia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Syria — all on U.S. sanctions lists .

“Everything the U.S. does, we are on the ball,” Stagno said, adding that if an existing customer gets on the U.S. sanctions list, Crowdfense would abandon it. “All the companies and governments directly sanctioned by the USA are excluded.”

At least one company, spyware consortium Intellexa, is on Crowdfense’s particular blocklist.

“I can’t tell you whether it has been a customer of ours and whether it has stopped being one,” Stagno said. “However, as far as I am concerned now at this moment Intellexa could not be a customer of ours.”

In March, the U.S. government announced sanctions against Intellexa’s founder Tal Dilian as well as a business associate of his, the first time the government imposed sanctions on individuals involved in the spyware industry. Intellexa and its partner company Cytrox was also sanctioned by the U.S., making it harder for the companies, as well as the people running it, to continue doing business.

These sanctions have caused concern in the spyware industry, as TechCrunch reported .

Intellexa’s spyware has been reported to have been used against U.S. congressman Michael McCaul, U.S. senator John Hoeven, and the president of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, among others.

De Gregorio, the founder of Zeronomicon, declined to say who the company sells to. On its site, the company has published a code of business ethics , which includes vetting customers with the goal of avoiding doing business “with entities known for abusing human rights,” and respecting export controls.

Those hoping to see Caitlin Clark win a national championship in her final weekend as the best player in college basketball will have to pay up.

Tickets to see Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes meet the Connecticut Huskies in the Final Four of this year's women's NCAA Tournament — along with the other semifinal matchup between undefeated South Carolina and North Carolina State — have been more popular than ever, ticketing platforms say, with prices rivaling or even surpassing tickets to the men's event.

Logitix, a ticketing services company, reported Wednesday that the average sale price for a resale ticket to the women's semifinal had reached $2,323. By comparison, the average sale price for the men's event was just over $1,000, it said.

As of Friday midday, the cheapest resale seats available for each event was roughly the same price — around $300 to $350 each when purchased as a pair (not counting fees charged by online ticketing platforms). The men's event had higher prices for the most expensive tickets, by about $1,900 to to $1,000.

The high prices for the women's Final Four are a continuation of a trend that began last year, according to the ticket resale platform StubHub . In 2023, the average ticket price for the women's Final Four was 15 percent higher than the men's event, the company reported. It added that total sales for 2023's women's Final Four were six times higher than in 2022.

Those 2023 totals have now been bested, StubHub said. "This year is the best-selling women's Final Four ever," it said Thursday on the social media site X .

One factor to note is the difference in venue size for the two events. Women's Final Fours are typically held at an NBA arena, while since 2009 the men's teams have played in NFL stadiums temporarily reconfigured to host a basketball game.

This year, the two women's semifinal games will take place Friday evening at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland, home to the NBA's Cavaliers. That arena seats about 19,400 attendees.

By contrast, the men's Final Four will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., an NFL stadium that usually hosts the Arizona Cardinals. That venue is much larger; when configured for basketball, it's capable of seating as many as 73,000 people .

"It's hard for you to wrap your head around. When you step on the court and you're playing for 40 minutes, you're not thinking, like, 'Oh my gosh, there's 10 million-plus people watching this game at home,'" Clark said in a press conference Thursday.

But, she added, then she saw how the Iowa-LSU audience had stacked up against other sports broadcasts this season — better than all but one regular season college football game, better than all but one game of last year's NBA Finals, better than the deciding game of last year's World Series.

"I think that really puts into perspective where women's basketball is going and the type of excitement around our game," Clark said.
