Rolls-Royce Wraith review

p90133139_highres_rolls-royce-wraith.jpg

Incredible road presence, sumptuous interior, (largely) effortless driving experience

Not as sporting as you might hope. A wee bit big, too

What is it?

The Wraith is billed as “the most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history”. The first bit is easily dealt with: a turbocharged 6.6-litre V12 sends 624bhp to the rear wheels, ten per cent more power than you’ll find even in the new Phantom and Cullinan.

As for the most dynamic? Well, you’d argue that’s not difficult, given Rolls has long mastered the art of hefty, comfy cars that are designed to soothe not scintillate. But the Wraith is based upon the Ghost limo, so it’s hardly got a sporting chassis at its core, though its rear axle has been widened and its wheelbase shortened.

“The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering,” says Rolls, “while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive.”

Achieving those high speeds ought to be a doddle; with two turbos, the Wraith has a ginormous 590lb ft of torque available from 1,500rpm, enough to shift its 2.4 tonnes to 60mph in 4.4secs. Quicker than hot hatches with not dissimilar power-to-weight ratios, and quite startling to experience in something with lambs’ wool floor mats.

Indeed, it may be the most sporting Rolls ever, but it’s still dripping in luxury. There are four finely proportioned seats, sumptuous materials across most surfaces and head- and leg-room aplenty, even in the rear. Don’t worry, the front seats electrically whirr forward to allow anyone climbing into the back some extra grace.

Its £250,000 starting price really is just the start, too. Few Rolls-Royces leave the Goodwood factory without first having been made fully bespoke to their buyer’s needs; colour-matched inside and out, fibre-optic star headlining fitted, the full works. Half the fun of having a Rolls-Royce isn’t driving it (or being driven in it), but the buying process itself.

The Wraith is now one of the oldest Rolls-Royces on sale, having arrived in 2013. The Ghost it’s spun from landed in 2010, and its drop-top sibling – the Dawn – started production in 2015. While the new-generation Phantom is sold only as a saloon, the Wraith is the car of choice if you want your Rolls-Royce to take the form of a two-door coupe.

Our choice from the range

p90133149_highres_rolls-royce-wraith.jpg

What's the verdict?

Take Rolls-Royce’s billing too close to face value – by approaching the Wraith expecting a sports car – and you’ll be disappointed. Expect an ever so slightly sharpened Rolls, though, and you’ll discover a beguiling car that never fails to feel special. Unless you go looking too hard for BMW bits.

In objective terms, the Wraith has fallen a bit behind on tech and is tangibly a generation behind the new Phantom and Cullinan, not to mention other luxury car rivals. It’s also far too big and heavy to feel anything like approaching a driver’s car, something that must be commented upon given Rolls has pointed out that’s (kinda) what it’s meant to be.

But it’s a Rolls-Royce. Objectivity is rendered pointless by quarter-million-pound price tags, and as an automotive experience, the Wraith is matched only by other Rolls-Royces. It’s an experience all car enthusiasts should try and get a taste of at least once, and if you’re lucky enough to have the money and space to add a Rolls to your collection, there’s a considerable amount to recommend choosing the one that looks and feels most sporting.

Rolls-royce wraith review: sporting luxury, with a dab of charm.

The Queen. Heads of state. Rock stars and swimming pools. FAB 1. So rich is the lore of Rolls-Royce that it's a motorcar company that needs little introduction. Seeing one on the roads might be a rare thing, but this iconic marque enjoys the highest of the highlife. It is the gold standard, the definition of luxury to which many aspire.

Our quick take

We approached the Rolls-Royce Wraith with a mixture of trepidation and heady excitement. Where the Phantom (especially) is "typically" Rolls-Royce, the Wraith takes some of Ghost's more modern look and pairs it with sporty coupé stylings. The result is remarkable and unique.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith isn't stuffy or boring, it's a surprising fusion of heritage and sporty performance. It delivers opulence, practicality and performance and it does so without compromise. Well, we say that, but the compromise is the starting price of around £200,000 and our review car was loaded with an additional £60,000 worth of extras.

There's also the small consideration of the mileage. Our model (over the 8000 miles it has done) has averaged about 18mpg. That's the cost of having that huge power plant. But for those who can justify spending as much on a car as they might a small property, that's probably of little concern.

Those more concerned about the environment may be wishing for some of that BMW i technology in the future.

But above all, the fact that Rolls-Royce is doing this worthy of praise. This is a unique car, delivering an experience that's extremely rare, to a few who can afford it. The motoring world would be a boring place if we never had anything to aspire to or dream about.

Rolls-Royce Wraith - 4.5 / 5

But at that lofty height Rolls-Royce is plagued with preconceptions. You might think that Rolls-Royce is boring or conservative, perhaps a car for the outdated gentry of yesteryear, resigned to history like the great houses of Downton Abbey.

The Wraith tries to challenge some of that. It's not the car you'll see chauffeur-driven with Lord Snooty in the backseat. It's a car that's markedly different to the Phantom (especially) and the Ghost (less so) it sits alongside. The Rolls-Royce Wraith is that motoring cliché: it's a driver's car, where the most important person is sat behind the wheel.

Rolls-Royce Wraith review: Devilish design

Nothing says more about the ambitions of the Wraith than its design. It's a small Rolls-Royce, if that isn't an oxymoron. By that we mean it's more compact than its high-flying cousins, taking a sporty coupé approach. There's a fusion of ideas, hanging onto a front that's classically monolithic, clinging to Ghost's grille, before morphing into a fastback, giving a sporty roof line. Those are lines are also reflected in Dawn, the latest model from Goodwood to join the pack.

Gaze from the front, or in your rear-view mirror, and there's the magnificence of Rolls-Royce bearing down on you, but when we pulled back the net curtains to casually peer out of the kitchen window, the Wraith has the profile of a muscle car.

In many ways that's decidedly un-Rolls-Royce, and in those cursory glances, we're reminded of a 70s Chevy SS or classic Ford Mustang. But there is no escaping the majesty, or no escaping the sporty poise either.

For some that might make the Wraith look like it's carrying a little steroid bloat. The side windows, perhaps, are a little small given the mass of car. But the muscly shoulders and the small flick on the top of the boot at the rear add to those lines matched with 20-inch wheels wearing low-profile tyres.

Luxury is all about striving for the best. Luxury is about being able to do away with compromise, because you don't have to. With the Wraith that means you get those sporty looks and sporty performance, but you don't have to sacrifice comfort or space. The boot opens to offer plenty of luggage stowage at 470 litres; you can slip two adults into the rear seats and they'll be as comfortable as they are on the sofa at home, if not more comfortable. There's only space for two, however, with the Wraith taking the prize for probably the biggest 2+2 on the road.

But the real showpiece of the Wraith design is the coach-style doors. More commonly known as suicide doors, they mean that the Wraith can spread its wings when you disembark, perhaps drawing more stares than anything else. But did you know they are power closing? Of course they are. Once your passenger has stepped out, you can press the dash button and the door will close itself.

The bonnet is fronted by Spirit of Ecstasy with the option to sheath the iconic figurine when you lock the car, now a standard feature across RR models. What you don't notice from the outside is how much the bonnet curves off toward the front. From the driver's seat you really notice it, with Spirit of Ecstasy a figurehead sitting proudly on the prow and about the only indication of where the front of the car is.

Rolls-Royce Wraith review: Interior charms

But for all the splendour of the the fusion exterior of the Wraith, it's the interior that potential owners (read everyone) will enjoy. It's here you can make your bespoke selections, choosing interior detailing, finishes and colours to make it uniquely yours. Want your Scottish clan embroidered on the seats? No problem. Want it in hot pink leather? Ney bother. Want it colour matched to your darling Pekingese? Stranger things have happened.

Beyond the limitless options for a custom interior, the Rolls-Royce Wraith carries a lot of charm. The present meets the past, bringing opulence without vulgarity. Some might think the deco-style dials and Spirit of Ecstasy detailing are a little chintzy, but once you're cosseted within those accommodating sporty seats, you'll find you're increasingly forgiving of those characters.

There's probably little point in telling you how high quality the interior the Wraith is: it comes with the territory and means we get to save on superlatives. What is more impressive is the charm that comes with it. You'll notice the steering wheel is big and round, as you'd expect from a Rolls-Royce. It's a world away from the flat-bottomed steering wheels some sports coupés offer (looking at you Audi RS7), and it preserves that heritage feeling.

But we like the way that once you set the steering wheel position, it powers itself up when you open the door, or returns to position once you're seated. It means the Wraith can keep form without losing function and we have to say we love the feeling of that perfect circle spinning through our hands coming out of sharp turns.

Then you have the controllers for the vents. There are no plastic dials here, just metal plungers to change the ventilation you're getting. Those old school charms meet the new, with a fibreoptic Starlight Headliner. This is a bespoke option (each made by hand) and you can control the brightness as you see fitting, bringing a lift to the interior. There's the option for a glass roof instead, a thoroughly modern option.

Continuing the theme of modernity is the huge display that sits in the middle of the dash. It's subtly covered when not in use, but when revealed it doesn't look out of place, the frontispiece in a wide range of tech treats. Adaptive active cruise control? Check. Night vision? Check. Cameras to give you all round vision? Check. Heads-up display? Check.

Yes, much of this stuff is coming from parent company BMW, and it's similar to the sort of technology you can opt into on most executive saloons, but the real point is the Wraith isn't lacking. It's not just about leather sourced from cattle free-roaming at high altitude in the Alps, or the mirrored precision of the wood grain, it's about not having to compromise.

The bespoke Rolls-Royce sound system is also very good. There's speakers spread throughout the cabin and it has the advantage of operating in a car that's already isolated from a lot of road noise. It links into the radio, as well as offering support for external devices and it sounds really good. There's the option to switch between "studio" or "theatre", the latter for more of a surround sound effect.

But within the wonderment of that sumptuous interior, there are two things that strike us. Firstly the Wraith clock. We're not huge fans of heritage clocks and from the VW Passat through to the Mercedes SLS AMG, we've seen these anachronisms. Yes, in the Wraith it matches the rest of the décor and it pulls off the heritage charm where others don't, but at night, it's a glowing disc and you can't see the hands, at all. Secondly, alongside the metals, leather and wood, the plastic of the indicator and wiper stalks feels slightly out of place.

Rolls-Royce Wraith review: Performance power

A push of the button starts the car with barely a whisper, staying true to Rolls-Royce's ideals of preserving silence. That's if you're in the car. Leave the door open and you'll be hit by the 6.6-litre V12 thrum.

You're rewarded with a silky smooth and quiet ride, which is exactly what you'd expect. Given the sporty stance, the Wraith will soak up plenty of bumps in the road, but offers adaptive suspension height to change the ride. It's wonderfully quiet, a place you can motor along, enjoying the peace and tranquillity.

But the Wraith isn't a ponderous wallowing beast. It might weigh the best part of 2.5 tonnes, but there's plenty of power under the bonnet and the body roll is well managed. Sure, it's not going to corner as spritely as sports cars costing (perhaps) as much, but hitting 60mph in 4.4 seconds, it's surprisingly fast.

That's part of what you're buying into in the Wraith. For the most part, there's stately elegance as it wafts along, but bury your foot into the wonderfully thick lambswool carpet (optional) and the Wraith lets the demon out of the cage. It's then that you'll hear the roar from the engine as you vanish over the horizon, powered by 624bhp.

There's a smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox and the Wraith skips up and down these gears almost without you noticing. There's power when you want it, but then the Wraith is predictive - it knows what's coming on the road thanks to the satellite assisted gearbox so it can be ready to respond. There's no sports mode and no paddle shifters, so if you really need speed, it's down to that pedal response.

There's something of a pause before the Wraith drops a couple of gears to deliver the explosion of power, so it's not as responsive as those models where you get to pre-arm it with a sports mode, or can manually switch down. There's the odd moment when the change down happens with a bit of a clunk, such as when breaking at lower speeds, but we love how it backs off the power a touch before switching up under acceleration. It keeps things smooth.

It's worth bearing in mind that this is rear-wheel drive only and while that fits with plenty of other sports cars, there will be many who say that it's begging for four-wheel drive to give additional purchase in all conditions.

From the driver's seat the visibility is pretty good, although we found the Starlight Headliner could be a distraction when glancing into the blindspot at night, but it can be dimmed or switched off. The wing mirrors are pretty big, so side visibility is good and we were also aided by the optional driver's aids.

This technology package delivers things like lane guidance: drift toward the line and feedback will vibrate and tell you to keep it on the straight and narrow. Then you have night vision. It's perhaps a bit of fun, unless you're somewhere really dark, but it picked out cars well enough and even showed us a bridge we couldn't see through the fog. There's also collision avoidance, giving a warning in the heads-up display when you're too close to the vehicle in front that's really effective. We also had it detecting pedestrians on a dark night.

But of all these technologies, we found ourselves enamoured most by the 360-degree camera system. With a car the size of the Wraith, parking is tough and you always want to be sure you're not going to bump anything. The system is the same as we've seen elsewhere - Audi for example - and it makes parking a pleasure with a real time top-down view of everything around your car. It'll be essential whether you're trying to parallel park outside Harrods, or squeeze into tight bays in the Aldi car park.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith dispels any myth that RR is a car for "old men". This is a car that's thoroughly modern, has all the modcons, yet plenty of heritage character. Rolls-Royce managed this without vulgarity, presenting the Rolls for drivers. It has power, it has refinement, but yes, it comes at a price.

Here's Why Rolls-Royce Cars Have the Spookiest Names

Phantom, the friendly Ghost and the Wraith

Headshot of Jay Ramey

Phantom , on the other hand, has been a marketable nameplate for Rolls-Royce for almost a century, and we would pay serious money to have been at the unveiling of the very first Phantom when people heard that name for the first time. But of course, there weren't really auto shows back then—there were industrial exhibitions—and automakers didn't have the unveilings they do now. Still, hearing the name Phantom applied to a car for the first time must have been a mind-bender, because a century ago cars had really boring names like Two-Liter, or some guy's surname, or a string of random numbers. Or it was something brash, like Chevrolet Superior. There was little middle ground. (But it was mostly surnames.)

So how did Rolls-Royce get rolling with ghost-themed names?

wraith rolls royce phantom wraith

The British automaker started out, like many others, with numbers, including the 1907 model that eventually gained the name Silver Ghost.

"Originally and simply called a '40/50,' the chassis of this car was first produced at Royce's Manchester works and later produced from 1908 at the Derby factory (still in use for aviation engine production) and between 1921 and 1926 in Springfield, MA, USA," the Silver Ghost Association says. "While the name 'The Silver Ghost' was originally given to chassis no 60551 and other cars were given individual names as well, the title 'Silver Ghost' was taken by the press, although the Company did not recognize the series as such until the introduction of the new Phantom range of cars in 1925."

So Rolls-Royce did not start out particularly hip when it came to marketing, but then again most cars back then were named for their displacement or cylinder count. So in a way it was rescued from boring obscurity by journalists.

What about the Phantom then?

That model, which debuted in 1925, replaced the Silver Ghost, with the automaker billing it as the "New Phantom" in a flash of marketing savvy.

Rolls-Royce's current lineup now stays true to the ghostly theme with a Phantom , Ghost , and Wraith in the lineup. But there's also Cullinan , the origin of whose name is not particularly spooky, but is definitely strange for other reasons.

And the photo above shows two Rolls cars that are actually haunted. For mechanical reasons.

Headshot of Jay Ramey

Jay Ramey grew up around very strange European cars, and instead of seeking out something reliable and comfortable for his own personal use he has been drawn to the more adventurous side of the dependability spectrum. Despite being followed around by French cars for the past decade, he has somehow been able to avoid Citroën ownership, judging them too commonplace, and is currently looking at cars from the former Czechoslovakia. Jay has been with Autoweek since 2013.

Home-Start Arun promotes the welfare of families in the Arun, Worthing and Adur District Council areas, to alleviate stress and conflict at home and prevent family crisis and breakdown.

“2023 was another extraordinary year for Rolls-Royce, with strong sales performances in all regions and across the full product portfolio. It’s especially encouraging to see the enormous interest in and demand for Spectre, supporting the decision to adopt a bold, ‘all-electric’ strategy for future model development and production. The record level of Bespoke commissions, both by volume and value, also underlines our position within the luxury sector, offering our clients opportunities for self-expression and personalisation they cannot find anywhere else. “As incoming CEO, I’m in the extremely fortunate position of taking over responsibility for a business in robust good health, with strong foundations and a clear strategy for growth and development, formidable technical capabilities and a focused, dedicated team. I’m looking forward to working with the entire Rolls-Royce team to maintain this momentum and take this great company forward with confidence and conviction.” Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

NEWS SUMMARY

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars enjoyed a highly successful year in 2023, with strong sales and demand for its products in markets worldwide, and Bespoke commissions at record levels. The company’s strong performance was once again underpinned by the uniqueness and diversity of its offer, particularly in respect of Bespoke personalisation and the marque’s unrivalled ability to meet and exceed clients’ ever-expanding expectations. The ongoing success and growth of the marque’s Bespoke capabilities – supported by the continuing expansion of the marque’s international Private Office network – resulted in more and higher value Bespoke commissions than ever before. Global sales of 6,032 motor cars were in line with internal expectations and Rolls-Royce’s status as an international luxury house, rather than a volume-driven manufacturer. All Rolls-Royce motor cars are hand-built at the marque’s home in Goodwood, UK and each one has elements of Bespoke. While the hugely popular Wraith and Dawn models ceased production as planned in 2023, the year was most notable for the start of production and sales of Rolls-Royce Spectre, with the very first client deliveries taking place in the autumn. Following its triumphant public reveal in October 2022, the first all-electric Rolls-Royce in history has attracted enormous interest, particularly among younger clients; this demand has translated into orders extending into 2025, laying a firm foundation for the marque’s bold, all-electric future. The company’s long-term focus on Bespoke, and the growing ambition of client commissions, is reflected in the ever-increasing scope and sophistication of Rolls-Royce’s design, technology, engineering and craftsmanship. During 2023, the company announced substantial new investment in the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood to enhance capacity and capabilities for Bespoke and to support the growth of Coachbuild. To meet clients’ growing demand for increasingly detailed and extensive Bespoke commissions, Rolls-Royce expanded its Private Office network further: following Dubai, which opened in 2022, Shanghai opened in autumn 2023 and the marque confirmed its plans to open Private Offices in Seoul and North America in 2024. The global Rolls-Royce Private Office network enables a new level of client engagement with the marque and is already delivering a significant uplift in Bespoke demand.

FULL PRESS RELEASE

A WORLD-CLASS BUSINESS Rolls-Royce enjoyed a highly successful year in 2023, with strong sales and demand for its products in markets worldwide. Every motor car hand-built at the Home of Rolls-Royce includes some element of Bespoke, the company’s unique programme offering personalisation possibilities which are limited only by the client’s imagination. In 2023, Bespoke commissions reached new record levels by both value and number; the technical innovations required to deliver specific projects saw Rolls-Royce file a number of new patents during the year. In 2023, more Rolls-Royce motor cars were delivered to clients around the world than in any other year in the marque’s 119-year history. To mark 20 years of production at Goodwood, Rolls-Royce commissioned an independent study into the marque’s economic impact, which calculated its total contribution to the UK economy at over £4 billion since 2003, and now over £500 million annually. The company created 180 new jobs at its Global Centre of Luxury Manufacturing Excellence in 2023, while more than 130 people joined the company’s Future Talent programme in Apprenticeship, Internship or Graduate Placement positions. The marque also announced plans for significant new investment to modernise and upgrade its manufacturing facilities to enhance its Bespoke and Coachbuild capabilities and support production of its future all-electric product portfolio. In 2023, Rolls-Royce further enhanced its industry-leading experiential luxury capabilities – a significant growth area within the luxury sector. The marque’s successful and celebrated global Private Office network, which offers clients a highly personalised commissioning and ownership experience, expanded to Shanghai in 2023. This unique programme, which began with Private Office Dubai in July 2022 – the first Private Office outside the company’s home at Goodwood, UK – offers clients direct access to Rolls-Royce’s own designers and engineers. The impact of these new international Private Offices has already been significant, with a marked increase in the number and complexity of Bespoke commissions. This programme will be extended with two new international locations in 2024. In addition to this, the marque’s Whispers app witnessed significant increases in engagement. Reserved exclusively for Goodwood-era Rolls-Royce clients, the digital members’ club enables users to benefit from exclusive products and experiences selected from the marque’s wider network within the luxury industry, further establishing the brand as a focal point within the lives of owners. BESPOKE: FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Rolls-Royce Bespoke offers every client the opportunity to express their personality through their motor car – an unparalleled experience that was enjoyed by all clients in 2023. It is this possibility to personalise any and every aspect of their motor car, in partnership with design and engineering specialists at the Home of Rolls-Royce, that is driving demand for Rolls-Royce products among its patrons worldwide. In 2023, Bespoke commissions reached new record levels by both number and value, with many of the most creatively ambitious and technically challenging originating in the Middle East. Bespoke projects completed in 2023 included many ‘firsts’ for the marque that were also technical innovations. These included the scent-release mechanism concealed in the headrests of Phantom Syntopia, which incorporated technology originally developed for medical applications, while many Bespoke paint finishes achieved in 2023 required entirely new materials, techniques and formulations to achieve. The year’s commissions also created new opportunities in the use of rare and beautiful materials and intricate craft techniques. These included: exquisite mother-of-pearl inlays for ‘The Pearl Cullinan’; hand-perforated leather seats for Black Badge Cullinan Blue Shadow; Starlight Headliners incorporating mesmerising celestial animations for Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis; and exquisite hand-painted Gallery artworks for Phantom ‘Inspired by Cinque Terre’. A more comprehensive selection of the year’s Bespoke highlights can be viewed here . A LANDMARK YEAR FOR COACHBUILD  Bespoke finds its ultimate expression in Coachbuild, an exacting, highly collaborative process in which Rolls-Royce and the client co-create every detail of the motor car, including its physical form. In 2023, the marque unveiled Droptail, the first true two-seater roadster to be built by Rolls-Royce in more than half a century. Only four examples of Droptail will ever be built and each highly individual, deeply personal commission redraws the boundaries for materials, craft techniques, technical innovations, and creativity, not just for the automotive sector but the wider luxury industry. ANNUAL GLOBAL SALES RESULTS 2023 In total, across more than 50 countries worldwide, Rolls-Royce delivered 6,032 motor cars to clients – more than ever before in the marque’s 119-year history. While the first half of the year marked the end of production for Rolls-Royce Wraith and Dawn as planned, the fourth quarter of the year saw the first deliveries of Rolls-Royce Spectre, laying a foundation for a bold electric future in which the marque plans to produce only fully-electric cars by the end of 2030. This strong sales performance should be seen in the context of Rolls-Royce’s fundamental, consistently stated position that it is not and never will be a volume-driven business. As a luxury house, its goal is to meet and exceed its clients’ expectations by building not just ‘the best car in the world’, but the car that best represents them and their personality. The global demand for Rolls-Royce products and ownership experience reflects the technical excellence, creative flair and meticulous attention to detail the company brings to this process, and which clients can find nowhere else. GLOBAL & REGIONAL SALES Rolls-Royce reports sales growth in the majority of the markets in which it operates, with deliveries reaching new record levels in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Europe regions. The USA was Rolls-Royce’s single largest market worldwide, while Greater China reaffirmed its status as the marque’s second-largest market. Record sales were achieved in Europe, where the UK is the largest single market. Supported by the Private Office Dubai, the Middle East maintained its position as the leading source of highly elaborate and technically demanding Bespoke commissions. Record annual sales and year-on-year growth in the Asia-Pacific region were fuelled by a strong performance in Korea, whose dynamic, vibrant economy is reflected in a rapidly expanding luxury market. CULLINAN LEADS THE WAY, WITH STRONG SALES FOR ALL MODELS As in 2022, Cullinan was the most requested Rolls-Royce model worldwide, followed by Ghost. Phantom continues to reign supreme as the marque’s pinnacle product. As planned, in 2023 Rolls-Royce ceased production of Wraith (introduced in 2013) and Dawn (2015). With Wraith’s departure from the portfolio, Rolls-Royce has now made its last-ever V12 coupé, an historic moment commemorated in the imposing Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow Collection. Released in March and restricted to just 12 examples, the Bespoke artistry seen within these historic models was inspired by the world land speed records set in 1938 on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats by Captain George Eyston in Thunderbolt , a seven-tonne, eight-wheeled leviathan powered by two Rolls-Royce ‘R’ V12 aero engines. SPECTRE  Rolls-Royce unveiled Spectre to the world in October 2022, with production starting in late summer 2023 and the first cars delivered to clients in the autumn. The first all-electric series Rolls-Royce in history has attracted enormous interest worldwide, particularly among younger clients, setting a clear direction of travel and establishing a solid foundation for the marque’s bold electric future. ECONOMIC IMPACT In 2023, Rolls-Royce marked the first 20 years of production at Goodwood by commissioning an independent study into the economic impact the company achieves. Conducted by a team from the London School of Economics (LSE) the study calculated Rolls-Royce’s total contribution to the UK economy at over £4 billion since 2003, and now more than £500 million annually. Around a fifth of that contribution is made directly in Chichester and West Sussex, through local supply chains and employment of its local workforce. There are now over 2,500 people working at the Home of Rolls-Royce, Goodwood; 180 new jobs were created during 2023 alone. FUTURE TALENT One of the largest employers in the Chichester area, Rolls-Royce continues to invest in its people through extensive ongoing training programmes and its Future Talent programme. Established in 2006, this programme supports more than 100 Apprenticeships, Graduate Placements and paid Internships every year, ensuring the marque’s talent pool is always able to service ongoing product and Bespoke demand. In 2023, the company welcomed 27 Apprentices, who will spend between two and four years learning specialist craft skills alongside experienced colleagues, while studying for nationally recognised vocational qualifications. The new cohort also includes Degree Apprentices, who will complete their undergraduate studies at the nearby University of Chichester. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE In 2023, Rolls-Royce submitted plans for a major new investment to modernise and upgrade its manufacturing facilities. The plans will enhance and extend the marque’s Bespoke and Coachbuild capabilities as well as support production of its future all-electric product portfolio. This significant investment represents the single largest injection of new capital at the Home of Rolls-Royce since the site opened in 2003. This reflects the scale of the transformation in the company’s size, activities, commercial success and global influence in the intervening two decades.

While over this time the existing plant has seen significant changes internally – most notably going from two production lines to one – the building itself is essentially the same as it was on day one. Then, it employed around 300 people and produced just one motor car a day. Following extensive consultation with local residents, in late summer 2023 the company submitted a formal planning application for an extension to the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood on land immediately adjacent to its existing 42-acre site. The plans take account of the site’s unique location, on the south-west corner of the historic Goodwood Estate and close to the South Downs National Park boundary. Like the original building, the new extension will be highly sustainable, and largely invisible at ground level beyond the site. Around one-third of the new site will be landscaped, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.

world best car , very comfortable you can keep this car for more than 100 years

I can spend the whole day inside. It just soaking up the luxury boozing out of every pore. There's richness in every small detail from beautiful carpets. The luxury leather trim, and the soft leather seats with feather-filled headrests sitting at the back. We have our own set of controls, that operate everything. It has a beautiful starlight roof and top-quality luxury. To enjoy this car. I have to be a billionaire.

Its a very nice and unique car

It's a very good car but the mileage is terrible. There weren't any service centers when I took this to Ladakh. It's also tough to maintain since when I used this as a school bus (I am a bus driver), all the kids start dirtying my beautiful matte carpets. This car is very overpriced. Get a Maruti Alto instead since it can seat 4 people and has good mileage

2019 Rolls-Royce Wraith

2019 Rolls-Royce Wraith front

Select a year

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Whereas Rolls-Royce's sedans–such as the Ghost and the range-topping Phantom –are intended to be driven by your chauffeur, the Wraith is for those who'd enjoy driving themselves. With a 624-hp version of the Ghost's V-12 and a shorter wheelbase, the Wraith is quicker and more nimble than its sedan sibling, yet still provides lightly weighted steering and a gently controlled ride. The air suspension soaks up even dramatic bumps without much disturbance to those luxuriating inside the Wraith's cabin. Opt for the Black Badge model and Rolls-Royce will turn up the engine's torque and tweak the suspension and transmission tuning for a slightly sportier driving experience.

Interior and Technology

Like other Rolls-Royce models , the 2019 Wraith's interior comes lined in fine leather, real wood, and genuine metal accents. Despite the Wraith's sloped roof and two-door body, there's still plenty of space in the back seat for two adults to get comfortable; just don't expect to fit three abreast in the rear as a center console extends from the front of the car to the rear bulkhead between the two rear bucket seats. Touchscreen infotainment with navigation and real-time traffic updates is standard, as is an 18-speaker audio system and a head-up display. For a price, Rolls-Royce will personalize the Wraith to your exact specifications and offers countless exterior colors, interior themes, and special trims.

Post Malone Totaled His Rolls-Royce Wraith, Upgraded to Brand-New Phantom

The famous rapper relieved some stress by shopping for a new car one day after getting t-boned by a Kia.

People photo

Post Malone bought himself a $420,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom just one day after a Kia crashed into his previous ride, an equally luxurious albeit $100,000 cheaper Rolls-Royce Wraith model which got severely damaged during the accident, TMZ reports .

“I f*cking totaled my other one so we went and got…the bigger one, the funner one,” the artist said in a TMZ video clip.

Malone hasn’t exactly had the best month. The "Rockstar' rapper was involved in an emergency landing when two tires of his private jet blew out during takeoff three weeks ago. His friend and peer, Mac Miller, died at the age of 26 last Friday. The Kia crash that same night just served as the proverbial cherry on top of terribly unfortunate incidents in the young musician's life.

In case you're wondering just how bad the crash really was, the following photo captured at the scene shows a pretty banged up driver's seat section.

Fortunately, the 23-year-old escaped the crash unscathed, with nothing but gratitude for his health and genuine thanks to supportive onlookers at the scene as a result. If there’s one thing that can temporarily alleviate some of the stress of these trying times, of course, for a young man like Post, it’s a new car. In the wake of this unfortunate hat-trick of recent events, the inclination to spend some of his hard-earned money on a new Rolls makes a certain amount of sense.

To be clear, there's been no sign of driving under the influence of any other kind of intoxication causing Friday night's accident. As a matter of fact, reports say that Post Malone wasn't even driving the Wraith, and as TMZ writes, it could've been the illegal U-turn that Malone's driver made that resulted in the above wreckage. Ultimately, everyone involved is safe and sound, which is really all that currently matters.

Rolls-Royce Posts Record Sales For 2023 With 6,032 Cars

How do you top the record-breaking sales of 2022? By shipping even more cars in 2023. That’s precisely what Rolls-Royce accomplished last year when shipments grew even further, reaching an unprecedented 6,032 vehicles delivered in over 50 countries. While a volume increase of 11 cars may not sound substantial, it becomes noteworthy when considering the average transaction price for a Rolls-Royce in 2022 was around €500,000 .

It’s worth noting that 2023 saw the demise of two models – the Dawn convertible and Wraith coupe . Setting a sales record with two fewer cars is even more impressive. Granted, Rolls-Royce’s first-ever EV joined the lineup as deliveries of the Spectre coupe commenced last fall. This zero-emission vehicle leads RR’s electric ambitions, as the plan is to end the production of vehicles with combustion engines in 2030.

As expected, the best-selling product last year was the Cullinan SUV , followed by the Ghost and the flagship Phantom. When it comes to regions where demand was high, the ultra-luxury British brand part of the BMW Group achieved record levels in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. However, the United States was Rolls-Royce’s largest single market, ahead of Greater China.

In Europe, the UK was the firm’s largest single market. Record sales in the Asia-Pacific region were mainly attributed to a strong demand from customers in South Korea. When it comes to ultra-expensive Bespoke commissions, the Middle East once again came out on top.

As to what lies ahead, 2024 is an important year for the Goodwood-based marque since RR has entered its 120th year. On May 4, 1904, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce met for the first time, and the rest is history. The company has laid the foundation for another strong year by hiring 180 employees and bringing on board over 130 apprentices.

It’s unclear whether there will be new models carrying the Spirit of Ecstasy statuette this year, although spy shots have indicated the Cullinan is preparing to receive a subtle facelift .

Vehicle information, luxury cars los gatos - a top notch dealership.

Looking for an automobile dealer who has GREAT cars ? Try Luxury Cars of Los Gatos. They offer fabulous, friendly service and of course - beautiful automobiles. I was very well cared for by Adam Wittmayer, their sales manager and purchased an F Type Jaguar.

Most beautiful interior

I purchased this car and was quite unsure at first. From owning Ferrari’s, and Lamborghinis, but this was my first car to provide that much luxury. The dealership was pretty bad (they overlooked me because I was young but I was still an multi millionaire) but this is about the car. The starlight headliner makes this car for me. I love the little things in this car like the smell of the ac and the umbrella in the door. This car is a must have

The Rich Get Richer: Rolls-Royce Had Record Sales In 2023

The cullinan was the brand's best-selling product, and the united states was the company's largest market..

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Riding in a Rolls-Royce gives off an undeniable air of wealth and luxury, and more people than ever before apparently want to give off that vibe. The brand reported its best sales ever in 2023, delivering 6,032 vehicles during the year. This narrowly beat the 6,021 deliveries in 2022.

Unlike many other automakers, Rolls-Royce does not break out sales numbers by model. The company said only that the Cullinan SUV was its best-selling vehicle in 2023, just like last year. The Ghost was in second place.

The United States was Rolls-Royce's largest market in the world in 2023, with China following behind in second place. The luxury automaker also tallied record sales in Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions.

Part of the reason many folks buy a Rolls-Royce is to feel special. Every buyer this year took advantage of the company's Bespoke personalization program that lets customers tailor the machines to their personal style, according to the company.

Some folks went really wild with the customization . The  Phantom Syntopia featured a hidden scent-release mechanism in the headrests. The  Cullinan Black Badge Blue Shadow  had a headliner with an embroidered scene of the moon's surface surrounded by 1,183 twinkling fiber-optic stars. The Pearl Cullinan's unique decoration included a cabin with 1,351 pieces of inlaid mother of pearl. Those are just a few examples.

Rolls-Royce had a few shakeups in its lineup last year. The company discontinued the Wraith coupe and Dawn convertible in 2023. It also added the  Spectre EV to the lineup and delivered the first example to a customer in the fall. The company has already racked up enough orders to keep production of the electric model going into 2025.

Gallery: Rolls-Royce Cullinan facelift first spy photos

Rolls-Royce Cullinan facelift first spy photo

Spy shots  from late last year suggest an updated Cullinan is on the horizon. It appears that the revisions are minor and are mostly limited to small tweaks to the nose, though we won't know for sure what's set to change until Rolls-Royce tells us more later in the year.

The company is also looking to expand its factory in the future. The new construction is on a parcel of land that borders the existing production site near the Goodwood Estate. According to Rolls-Royce, "The new extension will be highly sustainable, and largely invisible at ground level beyond the site." We're all for it. The figure the more Rolls-Royces in the world, the better.

Rolls Royce just set a massive record

I n the early 20th Century, two men very quite different backgrounds formed a partnership with the goal of making the best car in the world.

Charles Royce was born in London's Berkeley Square, son of the Lord and Lady Llangattock, while Henry Royce started working by the time was 9 years old, selling newspapers and working as telegram boy.

Related: The future of AI: Navigating risks and regulations

The two men for the first time in Manchester, England on May 4, 1904 and founded the company whose name would become synonymous with luxury automobiles

That image of high living can be found in countless movies, including the 1964 James Bond film, "Goldfinger," where the eponymous villain owns a Rolls-Royce Phantom III and "The Yellow Rose Royce," which came out in the same year and tells the story of the titled character and its three different owners.

Topping the previous year

In 2013, the company began its White Glove chauffeur training program, which provides comprehensive training to those who chauffeur Rolls-Royce owners.

The instruction includes lessons in how to perform the “champagne stop,” a braking technique that ensures not a single drop of the sparkling white wine is spilled by the passengers while stopping.

And as Rolls-Royce enters its 120th year, the company, a subsidiary of BMW  ( BMWYY ) - Get Free Report , is reporting record sales for 2023.

The automaker delivered 6,032 vehicles to more than 50 countries worldwide, up from last year’s record total of 6,021, which was the first time Rolls-Royce passed the 6,000 mark for the number of cars sold in a given year.

As in 2022, the company said that Cullinan, the full-sized SUV, was the most requested Rolls-Royce model worldwide, followed by Ghost, while the Phantom "continues to reign supreme as the marque’s pinnacle product."

Rolls-Royce reports sales growth in most of the markets in which it operates, with deliveries reaching new record levels in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Europe regions.

The USA was Rolls-Royce’s single largest market worldwide, while Greater China reaffirmed the number two position.

Record annual sales and year-on-year growth in the Asia-Pacific region were fueled by a strong performance in Korea, the company said, “whose dynamic, vibrant economy is reflected in a rapidly expanding luxury market.”

An all-electric future

While the company stopped producing the Wraith and Dawn models in 2023, Rolls-Royce said the year was most notable for the start of production and sales of the Spectre, the company’s first all-electric car.

And this ties in with the automaker's recent announcement that it would discontinue all gas-powered cars and, beginning in 2030, start phasing out all its internal combustion engines in favor of electric technology.

Even the beloved V-12 engine Rolls-Royce uses in its current form will cease to exist in light of the company's new direction.

In-coming CEO Chris Brownridge said in a statement that "2023 was another extraordinary year for Rolls-Royce, with strong sales performances in all regions and across the full product portfolio."

He also said bespoke commissions set record levels, both by volume and value

“I’m looking forward to working with the entire Rolls-Royce team to maintain this momentum and take this great company forward with confidence and conviction," he said.

Brownridge, former CEO of BMW UK, is following Torsten Müller-Otvös, who retired as top executive and who stirred up some controversy when he said in a 2022 interview that Covid-19 deaths drove sales for the iconic luxury company.

"Quite a lot of people witnessed people in their community dying from Covid, that makes them think life can be short, and you'd better live now than postpone it to a later date," he said, according to the Financial Times.

All-electric Spectre helps Rolls-Royce Motor Cars to 'record year'

The 119-year old marque, which never gives much away in terms of figures, says its ambition to build only fully electric cars by the end of 2030 is on track.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has reported another year of record sales, bolstered by a recovery in China and the launch of its new all-electric Spectre model.

The Goodwood-based firm, which is owned by BMW, said 6,032 vehicles were delivered to customers in 2023 - a slight uptick on the previous 12 months .

The performance was driven, the company said, by demand for its existing Cullinan, Ghost and Phantom marques, with buyers all securing a degree of individuality for their cars under its growing Bespoke programme.

A burgeoning Coachbuild operation also allows for the customer to be involved in every stage of the design and production process.

The highest number of sales were achieved in North America, with Greater China following after a tough 2022 amid a lag in the lifting of COVID pandemic restrictions in the world's second-largest economy.

The UK remained the firm's largest European market.

Rolls-Royce ceased production of Wraith and Dawn models in 2023 in favour of its new Spectre model.

The company's first all-electric cars were shipped in the autumn, it said, without giving any figures.

The milestone marked the start of a shift that will see Rolls produce only fully electric cars by the end of 2030.

It hired an additional 180 staff last year and is planning to expand its Goodwood operations to help achieve this ambition.

The firm's fortunes contrast sharply with the wider motor vehicle sector as customers of Rolls are largely high net worth individuals unlikely to be affected by cost of living and other pressures such as hikes to borrowing costs that have impacted demand at the high volume manufacturers.

Figures released by the Society for Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) on Friday showed that while the number of new cars registered in the UK grew by around 18% last year, the boost came from businesses investing in large fleets.

Growth in private registrations was flat.

Chief executive of Rolls, Chris Brownridge, succeeded Torsten Muller-Otvos following his retirement at the end of November last year.

He said of the company's performance: "2023 was another extraordinary year for Rolls-Royce, with strong sales performances in all regions and across the full product portfolio.

"It's especially encouraging to see the enormous interest in and demand for Spectre, supporting the decision to adopt a bold, 'all-electric' strategy for future model development and production.

He added: "As incoming CEO, I'm in the extremely fortunate position of taking over responsibility for a business in robust good health, with strong foundations and a clear strategy for growth and development, formidable technical capabilities and a focused, dedicated team.

"I'm looking forward to working with the entire Rolls-Royce team to maintain this momentum and take this great company forward with confidence and conviction."
