The Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA) is an extra fee you pay in advance when you charter a yacht. It covers the costs of food, fuel, dock fees, customs charges, and any special needs you have during your trip. It’s paid on top of the charter price, usually about 30%-40% of the total contract.

The charter rate includes the cost of staying on the yacht, including all its amenities. It also covers the services provided by the crew, insurance for the yacht, cleaning, linens and towels, and more.

Tipping the crew is not required, but it’s customary to give around 10%-15% of the charter cost.

Crewed charters are types of yacht charters that have a dedicated, full-time crew on board. This crew is responsible for everything from maintenance, sailing, and cooking, to cleaning and navigation. Additionally, they have in-depth knowledge about the region where the yacht is chartered, providing invaluable insights for your journey.

Women can choose a swimsuit and any cover-up that makes them feel at ease, such as a caftan, along with sunglasses and sandals. Men can dress in sandals, swim shorts, and a stylish polo shirt. This attire will ensure you’re fitting for the occasion, while maintaining comfort.

A charter preference list is a document that includes all the specifics of your charter, along with a detailed list of your food and drink preferences. It should list your preferred meals, as well as any allergies the crew needs to be aware of.

A luxury yacht charter includes accommodation on the yacht, along with all its facilities. This means all meals and beverages, water sports, and fuel expenses, as well as the crew services, yacht insurance, cleaning charges, and essentials like linens and towels, among other things.

The specifics of each charter depend on the number of guests. Docking fees and taxes are typically billed separately. In the case of larger motor yachts, known as Plus Expenses Charters, the running costs are not included in the rates and must be paid separately.

The cost of a charter depends on the type of yacht, and the number of guests. For example, an all-inclusive catamaran charter in Croatia can range from as low as 300€ per day to 900€ or more per day for larger, crewed, and more luxurious catamarans. Luxury yacht rentals in Croatia start at 2,500€ per day, but can go up to as much as 20,000€ per day.

For a charter guest, chartering a yacht can certainly be worth it, depending on your vacation preferences and budget. Yachts offer a unique blend of luxury and comfort that is hard to match, offering an exclusive, personalized setting. One of the biggest appeals is the privacy it provides, making it ideal for families, friends, or couples seeking a secluded experience. You can also explore multiple destinations without the inconvenience of constant packing and unpacking. The freedom to customize your own itinerary is another significant benefit.

For yacht owners, chartering your own yacht can be highly profitable if carried out in specific regions and during certain times of the year. You can potentially earn over 100,000€ or more within a month. A typical strategy involves purchasing an affordable, possibly second-hand yacht, and then renovating it.

The prime yachting season in Croatia runs from May to October. If you prefer warm temperatures, July and August are the hottest months, making them ideal for swimming and sunbathing. However, these months also tend to be the most crowded. If you prefer a quieter experience with fewer tourists but still pleasant weather, June and September would be the best choices.

For a superyacht over 100ft (30m), you should anticipate a weekly charter fee starting at $100,000 (91,000€). For mega yachts over 200ft (60m), the weekly rental rate ranges from $300,000 to $1,000,000, or even higher.

As summer beckons and vacation plans unfold, one destination that consistently graces travelers' must-visit lists is the picturesque Croatia. Blessed with a coastline adorned by islands and sun-kissed beaches, Croatia, guided by the Adriatic Sea, emerges as the ultimate summer hotspot. But with numerous options to choose from, how does one decide?

When is the best month for Sailing in Croatia?

Exploring and navigating the stunning landscapes of Croatia is best experienced during the enchanting months of May, June, September, and October. These time frames present a combination of benefits, including the full operational capacity of tour operators and hotels, a pleasantly warm climate, and more manageable crowds, especially when contrasted with the peak season.

From June to September is the High Season

To make the most of watersports like swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing in Croatia, plan your visit between June and September . During these months, the weather is consistently warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from comfortable to hot, peaking in July and August. If you prefer a hotter climate for sunbathing on the deck and swimming from the boat, summer is the ideal time.

Keep in mind that this period constitutes the peak tourist season . Popular destinations and attractions can be quite crowded, particularly in coastal areas and islands.

These months are perfect for various water-based activities due to warm sea temperatures and calm conditions . Swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing, and other water sports are popular choices, making it an ideal time for beach enthusiasts.

Summer in Croatia hosts a multitude of festivals, cultural events, and outdoor concerts, providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, music, and traditions. Nightlife peaks during the summer, especially in destinations like Pag, Hvar, Brač, Dubrovnik, and Split.

May and October are Shoulder season

još slika 2.jpg

For a budget-friendly experience in Croatia, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, specifically in early Spring (May and June) or late Autumn (September to November). These times offer a range of affordable activities. However, keep in mind that certain experiences, dining options, and accommodations may be limited.

During the shoulder season, the weather is generally pleasant. In May and September, temperatures are milder , making outdoor activities and sightseeing comfortable. The sea remains warm enough for swimming and water sports, while the weather is conducive to exploring historical sites, hiking in national parks, and enjoying outdoor dining.

Booking sailing boats during the shoulder seasons is often easier compared to the summer months, with a broader range of options and potentially more reasonable prices .

The shoulder seasons offer an excellent opportunity to explore Croatia's islands in a more family-friendly environment , characterized by fewer crowds and a relaxed atmosphere. Some events and festivals take place during these seasons, offering a unique glimpse into Croatian life, and showcasing local culture, music, and traditions.

Winter is the Low season

Exploring Croatia during the low season, from November to April , provides a unique opportunity for a more nature-focused experience.

During this time, many establishments close, leading to limited choices for boat charters, attractions, and activities. On the other hand, it is perfect for early booking activities and the flexibility to choose dates before the peak season rush.

Historic towns take on a cosy ambience, and cultural sites become more accessible without the usual crowds. While the Adriatic Sea may be too chilly for swimming, it provides a serene backdrop.

Sailing Conditions in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea , the n orthernmost part of the Mediterranean, spans from the Strait of Otranto to the Veneto region in Italy, boasting over 1,300 islands along the Croatian coast .

Tides in the Adriatic are characterized by small amplitudes, while currents are weakly observable, flowing counterclockwise along the Croatian coast.

sailing guide 4 uredene.jpg

The sea's salinity averages 38.30 per mill , influenced by the Po River and lower than the Mediterranean. Sea temperatures fluctuate annually, reaching 22 to 25°C in summer.

Waves are relatively small due to the Croatian coast's configuration, ensuring safe sailing .

Weather conditions are influenced by the general Mediterranean weather , with light to moderate winds prevailing until June, calm in July and August, and stronger winds returning in September.

Winds in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea is known for distinct wind patterns that influence its weather and sailing conditions, including Bura, Jugo, Maestral, Lebić, and Levant.

  • Bura winds from the northeast or east-northeast bring a cold, dry wind often accompanied by clear skies.
  • Jugo winds from the southeast are warm and moist , bringing humid conditions and occasional rain, often associated with unstable weather.
  • Maestral winds from the northwest are a daytime sea breeze during summer , providing cooler and pleasant conditions, particularly along the Croatian coast.
  • Levant winds from the east are moderate to strong easterly winds bringing some rainfall, more common in the southern Adriatic during transitional seasons.
  • Lebić winds from the southwest are warm and moist, potentially causing stormy weather and heavy rain , mainly in the western part of the Adriatic, more common in the fall and winter.

  • Where to sail in Croatia: find the best sailing route for you

Croatia is rightfully known as one of Europe's top sailing regions. With a  yachting infrastructure  that is second to none, you'll always find a place to anchor at a buoy or berth. Plus, beginners and families with kids will be able to manage the short distances between the islands and towns. But with literally thousands of magical harbours, islands and coves out there to discover, which are the best and how can you fit them into a single week?

Experienced sailors can cover the whole region and can afford to improvise. We always recommend checking out the legendary yachting guide to the Adriatic 777 Harbours and Anchorages , with it's most up-to-date edition published in 2018. And of course, you are all invited to the annual yachting.com 2022 Easter sailing meetup , which is the perfect way to practise and refresh your sailing skills.

Try out   one of these three sailing routes this year. They are suitable for everyone from complete beginners to those more advanced sailors and promise pleasant sailing, secluded bays, dolphins, amazing folk traditions and stunning UNESCO sites.

1. Orientation route for new skippers: around Šibenik

A great holiday route for inexperienced crews and families with small kids.

Šibenik Bay is also ideal for your first solo voyage as a skipper. The route will take you to islands that are normally uninhabited but that really come to life in high season. And you definitely won't miss out on local restaurants, shops, sights or museums. It also includes a visit to the famous Krka National Park , and time for a bit of swimming and relaxation between voyages. In this region, you may have to deal with more powerful northerly winds, such as the Sirocco or Bora.

Day 1: Šibenik → Zlarin

Zlarin is an island famous for processing sea corals. On arrival, head to   the  port of Luka Zlarin . It is generally well sheltered from the wind (except for the Bora and northerly winds). This is a quiet town with no cars, although you may occasionally hear the choir singing in the local church.

Day 2: Zlarin → Tijat/Prvić → Tribunj

The town of Tribunj  was originally founded on a small island and later spread out to the mainland thanks to the construction of the bridge. Its streets are teeming with history and once the fishermen return from the sea, the harbour transforms into a market. On the way, you can stop of at the deserted island of Tijat or take a dip on the beaches of Prvić .

Day 3: Tribunj → Kaprije/Kakan

Kakan is home to the popular  Potkučina bay  which can get busier at night due to the beach bar. The town of Kaprije on the other island offers quieter evenings. Just watch out for strong northerly and southerly winds here, which pick up power in the waters between the islands.

A view of the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik.

The Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik.

Day 4: Kaprije/Kakan → Zmajan

Diving  enthusiasts will especially enjoy Zmajan. Hidden along the local coastline you'll discover underwater caves and reefs abundant in marine life. It's possible to anchor in the bays on the south of the island, or practically anywhere else. It shouldn't be too crowded here.

Day 5: Zmajan → Šibenik

In Šibenik you can enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation, but don't be too quick to head off. Stay around to admire the local architecture. Be sure to visit St. Nicholas Fortress (strikingly reminiscent of Fort Boyard) and St. James Cathedral , both of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Day 6: Šibenik → Skradin + Krka National Park

Skradin is one of the entry points to the Krka National Park. It's particularly interesting for us sailors as you can anchor in the marina and then continue to the famous Skradin waterfalls on a boat cruise.

Day 7: Skradin → Šibenik

Before returning the boat, treat yourself to the tranquility offered by the surroundings of the river Krka or the streets of Šibenik.

Skradin waterfalls in Krka National Park.

Skradin waterfalls in Krka National Park. Since 2021, however, swimming is prohibited there.

YACHTING.COM TIP: If you've taken your own car and are enjoying one of the islands so much that you want to stay a bit longer, just go for it. You can always visit Skradin and Krka National Park on your way home.

Moderately demanding sailing route with longer crossings to take in the sights: Dubrovnik → Ston → Korčula → Gradac → Makarska → Omiš → Split → Trogir

The route takes you to popular holiday resorts and little-known harbours, which all have one thing in common - incredible beauty and countless sights to see . As the voyage largely follows the coastline , it can be even be suitable for novice sailors, although the longer crossings can make it a bit more challenging.

Novice sailors just starting out are often unnecessarily afraid of crossings. These voyages can take a bit more organization and you'll have to sort out separate journeys from your country to the ports you depart from and arrive to. But nowadays more and more yachtsmen and yachtswomen  are flying to their destinations by plane . Train and bus connections  to Croatia  have also been improving. If you are travelling from other parts of Europe there are rail connections to Split, coach (Flixbus being one of the cheapest) can get you to Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik, and Trogir, Split and Dubrovnik are all just a stone's throw from the airports. No matter what, we will help you organize picking up your boat in one marina and returning to another  with the charter company.

Day 1: Dubrovnik (→ Ston)

Take advantage of the time you'll be carefully inspecting the boat at check-in by dropping the crew off in Dubrovnik's historic centre:  one big UNESCO site . Stay overnight in Dubrovnik and retrace the steps of Game of Thrones heroes , or head to the nearby harbour  town of Ston ,   founded on three fortresses connected by immense walls. The region is also infamous for its  oyster farming .

YACHTING.COM TIP: If you have the time, extend your week-long voyage with an extra 2 or more days ashore. If you arrive by plane, you can stay in the quiet resort town of Cavtat some 5 km from the airport and get a bus or ferry to Dubrovnik in the morning to take in the sights before check-in. Or similarly at the end of your trip in Split, take an extra day to explore the local sights (such as Solina) and then get the bus or ferry back to Trogir.

Day 2: Dubrovnik/Ston → Korčula

The town of Korčula on the island of the same name is sometimes referred to as a mini Dubrovnik and its beauty really is second to none. Add to that lively local traditions, wine, olives and beautiful diving spots, you'll know right away why you headed there.

Day 3: Korčula → Gradac

Gradac will be your first port of call on   the Makarska Riviera . A small popular resort with famously beautiful pebble beaches and a modest harbour for smaller boats and yachts, it boasts a record number of sunny days a year and the remains of a Roman settlement.

A view of Dubrovnik harbour from the old city walls.

View of Dubrovnik harbour from the old city walls.

Day 4: Gradac → Makarska/Brela/Brač

Take a well-deserved rest on the sunny beaches of the Makarska Riviera. The seaside and spa resort of Makarska  is perfect but if you're looking for something a little quieter, sail a little further afield to Brela . You can also turn off to the eastern coast of Brač   and enjoy the solitude of bays with their unassuming beaches.

Day 5: Makarska/Brela/Brač → Omiš

Omiš is a quiet town with a surprisingly rich history, nestled in the shadow of a majestic mountain gorge. Here you can admire historical buildings and town palaces as well as the remains of the Starigrad Fortress   and Mirabella Fortress .

Day 6: Omiš → Split (+ Solin)

The entire old town of Split is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It would take weeks to get around all the sights there, so do your research beforehand. But if you want to see even more, add Solin , a town adjacent to Split from the north, to your itinerary. With its numerous ancient and medieval excavations, it is one of Croatia's  most important architectural areas .

7. Split (+ Solin) → Trogir

Your journey will end with the UNESCO sites of Trogir. Its historic centre is also listed as a cultural heritage site and is rightfully one of the most visited towns in Dalmatia (although the proximity of the airport may play a role in this).

Ancient ruins of the city of Salona in present-day Solin.

YACHTING.COM TIP: If you're at the helm, why not schedule 14 days on a yacht? In the first week, take this route in the opposite direction, from Trogir or Split to Dubrovnik. Then, in the second, do a tour of  the Bay of Kotor  in Montenegro, returning again to Dubrovnik. If you're worried that your crew won't manage another week on board, know that on longer charters, you can replace the crew after a week. We'll be happy to arrange longer charters, crossings and even crew changes with the charter company.

3. A sailing vacation with everything: a larger island tour from Pula

More advanced route with longer sailing for those who love nature and privacy: Pula → Susak → Silba/Premuda → Rab → Krk → Cres → Pula

This route is a perfect blend of lively harbours rich in culture, unspoilt countryside and deserted bays. It is primarily for more advanced sailors who are not afraid of longer voyages away from the mainland and who like to anchor in a bay as well as at a buoy or berth. Each island here is something special and you'll also be in one of Croatia's infamous wine regions.

Day 1: Pula

Pula is a vibrant city, one of the largest in Croatia, where ancient and modern meet. The Romans left behind a number of stunning ancient monuments, most notably the fortification ruins and an amphitheatre where gladiator battles used to take place.

Day 2: Pula → Susak

The island of Susak is small but still packed full of sights and u nusually for Croatia, it has sandy beaches. The local inhabitants ,  the Susak people, have a distinct culture even extending to their dialect. Those of them who emigrated before communism and their descendants return every year for a festival that celebrates their origins and sense of community. On these days, you can see women in beautiful, colourful traditional costumes.

Day 3: Susak → Silba/Premuda

The islands of Premuda and Silba are adjacent to each other. Premuda  is particularly famous among divers who head to a rock formation known as the Cathedral with its underwater caves  full of life. In contrast, the peaceful and idyllic Silba has the reputation of being the  island of love .

The island of Cres with its pristine waters, beaches and nature.

Don't miss the island of Cres if you want to visit one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Day 4: Silba/Premuda → Rab

The number of sandy beaches on the island of Rab breaks records in the Adriatic. Not only that, these beaches are breathtaking. This island is a haven for sailors, water sports enthusiasts and (beware!) nudists . The town of Rab itself will also satisfy your sightseeing needs.

Day 5: Rab → Krk

One of the largest islands in the Adriatic, Krk has everything you could possible from a holiday: beach resorts, preserved ancient Croatian architecture and a tradition of wine and olive oil production. You can anchor virtually anywhere but Punat  is a classic spot, and the local bay is graced by  the islet of Košljun with a Franciscan monastery.

Day 6: Krk → Cres

The island of Cres will delight all true nature lovers. Supplying the entire island with fresh water, the protected Lake Vrana is absolutely pristine. On the island you will find two ornithological reserves  where the rare griffon vulture nests. The waters around Cres and the neighbouring island of Losinj are also a protected sanctuary for  bottlenose dolphins . The beach of Lubenice in the emerald bay of Sv. Ivan is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

Day 7: Cres → Pula

You are at your final destination. Return your boat, and wander the streets of Pula for a few hours before heading home.

The amphitheatre in Pula was built in the Romanesque period and was used for gladiator fights.

YACHTING.COM TIP:  When sailing with small children , we recommend taking a route on the opposite side, along the western coast of Istria (Pula, Brijuni, Rovinj, Vrsar, Poreč, Novigrad). It isn't demanding, with short crossings, ancient towns and beautiful beaches.

Boat holidays in Croatia are in our heart. Get in touch, we'll be happy to plan one for you.

SPLIT REGION

SPLIT REGION

This is the most popular sailing region in Croatia because the major yacht charter bases at the Adriatic are situated in this area while good traffic connections allow the majority of the tourists to arrive.

Ionian islands

Ionian islands

The Ionian islands are a group of islands scattered along the west coast of mainland Greece and are principally known for Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaki, Kefallonia, Zakynthos and Kythira. The Ionian islands have a rich and varied landscape; sheer cliffs and white sandy beaches form a dramatic scene, while cypress trees, olive groves and forested mountains create a lush green palette against the intense blues of the Ionian Sea.

Balearic sea

Balearic sea

The Balearic Sea is part of the Mediterranean and is sandwiched between the east coast of Spain, the Southern coast of France and the Italian islands of Corsica and Sardinia. At its centre lies Spain’s Balearic Islands, an archipelago formed of islands and islets, the largest of the islands are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Valencia and Barcelona are the most well-known ports along this coast.

Sardinia

Sardinia is a large island in the Mediterranean. Beautiful turquoise waters, mountainous coastline, and great accessibility are one of the most attractive reasons why this is the perfect place to visit!

French Riviera - Cote d' Azur

What others say about us

For years now I have been sailing as a Munich native with my friends from Germany with Mario in my 2nd home Croatia. We switched from a monohull to a catamaran a few years ago, which was Mario's suggestion. This has more than proven itself because the space and independence to anchor far away from Marina's is priceless. If someone wants to book the complete package, Mario is the right choice for them. We are thrilled every year by the selection and booking of restaurants, landing stages and bathing bays. Add to that the fact that you have a professional with over 20 years of experience who has everything under control at all times. No matter whether you want to sail, relax, swim or visit the sights. The annual sailing week, especially due to Mario's presence and organization, is an absolute highlight for each of us. Thank you so much dear Mario and for many weeks together in the future! Your Branko, Thorsten, Thomas, Christoph, Mattias, Philip, Rafael, Roman, Phillip, Frederic and Martin

I had the opportunity to sail twice with Mario. The first time in the basic school of sailing, and the second time in the Vis regatta. When you combine a great sailboat, a great team and Mario as a skipper who tries (and succedes!) to win - you get a little different, even better experience. You can see immediately Marios huge experience, but I emphasize two things: he is fantastic in transferring enthusiasm and knowledge to team members and probably the best skipper for a good mood during sailing, but especially after, when sailboats are moored. It is then that Mario's acquaintances throughout the entire Adriatic coast come to the fore, providing exclusive, original gastronomic delights. Try to secure your booking with Yachting in Croatia in time, because we were late several times and had to wait for our chance in the following summer seasons.

We had first experience with sailing. Must admit that experiences and impressions are above our expectations . We are amazed and totally pleased! Great experience and excellent access during sailing from your said Mario as well thru side of your partner Maja made our travel exceptionally pleasant and interesting where every passenger different ages has felt like king. Places that we visited, food that we tasted - the best of the best! With many years of your experience you can offer to guest the best of local offers, wonderfully scene and unforgettable experiences. Briefly, on sailing with you we convinced that Croatia is little country for great vacation! Great experience wich we will surely repeat in organization of your company. We will recommend you to all of our frends.

I would like express my gratitude to you personally as well to Maja as the great your partner. It is always been the great pleasure to use your company's service, to feel your kind attentions in every step we go. I do remember every your lesson during perfect skippers training program. Every year then we renting a boat - we getting best possible options. At best price! That’s super! Many thanks for that. I do remember all valuenurable tips you has gave to us about sailing. Best recommendations for sailing, best places to see, best food and wine to find, it is all about you and your company’s service and the passion how you do that. Even this year, just after quarantine has been finished and we find direct flight to Dubrovnik, we have vent immediately for a sailing! Thank You very much indeed for great arrangement of our sailing holiday. It was one of the best in my live. Every year I bring some new friends to Croatia for sailing and they all absolutely falling in love with sailing in Croatia.

The "Black Kiss" crew would like to thank your company for organizing our sailing holiday among the myriad Croatian islands. The best thing that you can afford during a general pandemic is to self-isolate in the expanses of the crystal clear Adriatic Sea and strengthen immunity with friends or loved ones! "August should be strained slowly, just like a pear liqueur, then poured into a small glass, and enjoyed sip by sip, while looking at the sun through the glass. August nights should be diluted with the light of the candles and days should be laid between the pages of books as bookmarks, so that you can take those books off the shelves and shake out their heart in cold November».

Me and my friends So happy choosing company “ Time 2 travel “ for sailing vacation in Croatia. They made an excelent servise for us starting from charter the sailing boat at our desired port, transfer from the airport and all requested support after: direction to sail and visit, places to stay overnight and leads for local restaurants must to visit. Yachtinincroatia is Very profesional team. Its a not first and definetelly, not the last time I’ ll ask them to organize my sailing vacations. Maja and Mario - Thank you!

The 55 Bali was great as we were the first paying customers. Beautiful boat with plenty of room. The Captain and first mate were great. Food was top notch and so good that we opted to not do 1 shore dinner and just ate on the boat. We saw and did everything that we set out to see. I would repeat in a heartbeat.

Communication was the key to our successful trip. Chris at DMA Yachting kept us informed about what to expect, upcoming payments, etc. He was on top of the one hiccup we had and really turned a negative into a positive. Would definitely us them again.

Affordable Island-Hopping in Croatia? What Could Go Wrong?

A 30-percent-off Black Friday sale on a cruise aboard a yacht meant off-season sailing and being prepared for the unexpected.

A view from a hill of a red-roofed town surrounding a harbor. In the foreground, the ruins of an ancient fortification wall follow the downward slope of a steep hill. And in the distance, beyond the harbor with its numerous small boats, is a string of small green islands.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

As Croatians tell the story , the Greek hero Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive on the Croatian island of Mljet. Visiting in May, I and six other sailors embraced the myth when the motor on our 54-foot yacht failed.

“Remember, Odysseus spent seven years on Mljet,” said Ivan Ljubovic, our captain. “We can do two nights.”

In the scheme of things, the clogged fuel filter that impeded our progress on a seven-night, island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik on a yacht — which the passengers helped sail — was minor. Though an engine, even on a sailboat, is vital for docking and sticking to schedules on becalmed days, most of my shipmates agreed that getting waylaid in a village with Roman ruins on a turquoise bay was an acceptable fate.

I had been resigned to what were, in my mind, worse inconveniences when I had signed up for the trip last November. Then, the tour operator G Adventures had put several trips on sale over the Black Friday weekend. Its best deals were in the off-season, which meant potentially chilly weather and closed restaurants and attractions. But leaving in late April for seven nights of island hopping at roughly $1,300 — after a 30 percent discount — was too tempting to pass up.

My cousin Kim agreed and we made plans to pack rain gear and meet in Split to test the budget waters.

‘Everything between is an adventure’

Little about the itinerary was published pre-departure and none of it was firm.

“Split and Dubrovnik are fixed,” said the captain, who would pilot the ship solo and double as our guide, on our first day. “Everything between is an adventure.”

It started with the Sauturnes, a handsome Kufner yacht with four snug guest cabins, four economical bathrooms where the retractable faucet doubled as a shower spigot, and a spacious galley. Our “crew,” a mix of Australians and Americans ranging from 18 to 75 — all of whom had also jumped on the promotional pricing — spent most of the time atop the boat, where foam mattresses invited sunbathing and a cockpit awning provided shade.

The weather, which turned out to be sunny and comfortably cool, was not our greatest concern. The G Adventures website had mentioned well-known islands, including beachy Brac and Vis , which played a convincing Greek idyll in the movie “Mamma Mia 2.” But since many places would be closed in the shoulder season, we would proceed, according to the captain, based on the dictates of the weather and conditions on shore.

Meals were not included, which meant finding open restaurants was critical. For shipboard breakfasts and lunches, we each chipped in 50 euros (about $54) for communal groceries, which we shopped for at local markets. At night, we would dine at restaurants; G Adventures advised budgeting $250 to $325 for the week, which was accurate, though we often splurged on Croatian wine (a carafe of house red averaged $15).

Small ports

After the frenzy of grocery shopping and moving into the bunk-bedded cabin Kim and I shared, we experienced the Zen of sailing as the ship set off on a sunny morning for 43-mile-long Hvar , the longest and purportedly sunniest island in Croatia.

Neighboring islands drifted past as the wind patterned the sea in shifting ripples and ruffles. A flock of shearwaters soared by at eye level.

Within a few hours, the ridgelines of steep Hvar appeared, revealing terraced lavender fields and olive orchards. Motoring down a long, narrow inlet, we arrived in Stari Grad , a village of stone homes with terra cotta roof tiles, as travelers had since 384 B.C., when Greek sailors from the island of Paros settled here.

Our mooring provided a front-row view of fishing boats and cafes animating the waterfront. Stari Grad’s attractions, including the Greek ruins of Faros and a 17th-century Venetian cathedral, had yet to open for the season, but we relished exploring the old quarter’s narrow lanes and deserted plazas.

From the waterfront, an aerobic 20-minute hike up a steep hill crowned by a giant white cross offered views over Stari Grad and the plains beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fourth-century agricultural fields, with stone walls circumscribing grapevines and olive orchards.

That evening, we visited them to reach Konoba Kokot , a farm restaurant that specializes in “peka,” a kind of barbecue in which meat cooks under an iron lid piled with hot coals. The family that runs it opened in the preseason, welcoming us with bracing shots of rakija, a local herbal liquor. At a long table under an arbor, we gorged on homemade goat cheese, wild boar pate and, from the hearth, roast lamb, veal and octopus with limitless jugs of red and white wine for 35 euros a person.

Starry nights

Small ships are unmatched at getting into small ports, but a yacht trip is also a little like camping, starting most mornings with D.I.Y. instant coffee. Marinas offered free bathhouses with showers.

Cool temperatures apparently deterred the celebrity-filled mega yachts, which are known to anchor in the town of Hvar on the south shore of Hvar island. Our captain declared it the “Mykonos of Croatia” as we motored by the port bustling with visitors carrying shopping bags and cones of gelato.

With clear weather in the forecast, we moored in an undeveloped cove east of town. The mooring belonged to the owners of Moli Onte restaurant, who ferried us to land on a motorized dingy, allowing us enough time before dinner to visit the fortress above Hvar and have an Ozujsko beer on St. Stephens Square, the largest in the region of Dalmatia.

Back on board, with no artificial light to wash out the night sky, we hit the upper deck for stargazing. As my shipmates peeled off to bed, I grabbed a blanket and beanie and bedded down under the stars for the evolving show, periodically waking to catch the drama of the moon rising, reflected in the still water.

Little Dubrovnik

Fingers of gray rock reached down to meet sloping vineyards along Hvar’s south coast as we departed for its neighbor, Korcula. On our longest day of sailing, five hours, I welcomed the chance to play first mate, manning the lines on the jib sail.

To break up the trip, Captain Ljubovic navigated to a quiet cove off the Peljesac Peninsula where the Caribbean-blue waters, cloudless sky and sandy bottom convinced us to jump in despite numbing sea temperatures.

Fifteenth-century walls ring the historic center of Korcula, earning it the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Past the stone gates carved with a winged lion representing the empire of Venice, which controlled much of the Adriatic after the 13th century, narrow alleys led to ornate churches and mansions. There was no better history trip than getting lost in the web of pedestrian lanes. Or so we told ourselves as we passed the purported home of Marco Polo, still closed preseason.

Along the seafront walls, restaurants served pizza and seafood under lights strung in the pines and we caught sunset from a former turret, now converted into Massimo Cocktail Bar , which requires patrons to climb a ladder to the rooftop, a caution against second rounds.

The most romantic port of the trip was also the rowdiest, at least in the marina, which was hosting a Polish sailing regatta. When I headed for the showers at 6 a.m. the next morning, I found a group still cheerfully dancing atop a yacht littered in empty booze bottles and crushed potato chips.

Marooned on Mljet

We left Korcula on strong 20-knot “jugo” or south winds and Captain Ljubovic unleashed the sails, saying “You paid for a sailing vacation, not a motorboat.”

As we tacked back and forth toward Mljet , the boat heeled at a queasy angle and we took face shots of ocean spray.

On Mljet, where the western end of the island is home to Mljet National Park , we rented bikes (10 euros) to ride a lung-busting route over the park’s mountain spine. On the other side, we cycled around a pair of inland lakes and took a boat trip to a 12th-century monastery built on an island in one of them (park admission, 15 euros).

Docked in the still sleepy town of Polace, we heard tales of high season, when up to 100 yachts anchor in the bay and members of the band U2 were once seen biking in the park. After a brief shower, the town glimmered at sunset and the restaurant Stella Maris welcomed us with grilled sea bass (25 euros) and prawns (20 euros).

“I’m so glad I chose this time, because I don’t do crowds,” said my shipmate Nova Hey, 46, of Sydney, who was traveling with her 18-year-old daughter.

In the morning, I had the trail to the peak of Montokuc to myself. The roughly three-mile round-trip hike reached one of the highest points on the island, a rocky knob with stunning panoramas shared by a family of feral goats.

Not long thereafter, the Sauternes’ engine refused to turn over, stranding us in a national park on a remote island with no mechanics.

Teeming Dubrovnik

The next morning, Captain Ljubovic jimmied a fix but it didn’t last long and the engine died again, this time just opposite a cave on Mljet that we joked had to be the refuge of Odysseus.

After a morning of light sailing, a mechanic from the mainland arrived by speedboat and within an hour we were motoring toward the Franjo Tudman Bridge that spans the inlet to the Dubrovnik marina where hot showers awaited.

“Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia,” said Captain Ljubovic as we spent the last of our pooled money, 70 euros, hiring a taxi van to get us to and from the walled heart of the ancient city about 15 minutes away.

With two large cruise ships in port, Dubrovnik was teeming with visitors and the price to climb the stone walls that encircle the city was a sticker-shocking 35 euros. (In the ensuing two days Kim and I would spend post-cruise in the city, we bought the more comprehensive Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros that included admission to the walls as well as several museums and public bus transportation.)

On our final evening, we measured the lack of crowds versus closed museums; perfect hiking weather versus swim-inviting water; ample dock space versus more restaurant choices — and felt we’d come out ahead sailing in the bargain season.
