Johnson Weekender 18

  • Add to quote

Hi all, New to the site and sailing as well. I have been on a few sailing trips on rather large boats (50+ feet) as well as sailed on a few smaller boats in warm waters (mostly hobie cats). I plan on sailing in Minnesota inland lakes mostly, and came upon a Johnson 18 Weekender for what I think may be a good bargain (~$2k with trailer and motor). Anyone have any insight on if this would be a good beginner boat, and if it sails good for its class compared with other boats? Thanks for your input!

sailboatdata weekender 18

I tried googling the boat, it seems only 22 were built so there may not be much first hand experience, hopefully some one bites, but if not I did some googling. Every reference I found listed the boat as having no ballast. If this is correct, there are some trade offs. The boat would have to be dry sailed without ballast and with her weight and beam, she may not be self righting or self rescuing. Given these limitations, if the sources I have read are correct, it is not really a boat I would recommend to a new sailor. However, because I just did google searches on a fairly uncommon boat, its entirely possible I am missing a big piece of the picture, so keep researching. Maybe asking the seller how much ballast she has in her keel would be a good next step.

According to a previous post I actually found on these forums it has 2 - 100 lb ballast weights in the keel.

sailboatdata weekender 18

The Johnson Weekender 18 came up in a thread started on SN in June of 2012. I couldn't find any credible information that it had 200# of ballast in the listed 850# of displacement. The hull and rigging would be about 650#, which is about what my unballasted 17' Daysailor weighed, so I can believe it is not ballasted.

Hunter 18.5

Simple, fun and forgiving—perfect for the sailing family.

We’re all romantics. Some of us have it worse than others, of course—those with the proverbial wandering eye—and our backyards are a visual testament to both our passion and our lack of impulse control. We’ve got a small marina’s worth of vessels in various states of repair—the sprit-rigged dinghy, the leaky catboat, and the sweet little double-ender that just needs some cosmetic work—in truth we own more boats than we could restore in three lifetimes. Despite what we tell ourselves (and our spouses), not all boat purchases are especially rational decisions.

But the same thing that seems to draw us to certain boats blinds us to others that might, arguably, be a better fit. Some of the more common production fiberglass trailersailers are good examples. Staring at them probably won’t make your heart sing— no portlights, no sweeping sheer line, and not much wood—just angular windows, predictable lines, and lots of white fiberglass. But over the years we’ve found that many of these popular factory boats—which typically aren’t great in any one category but are pretty good in most—deserve more consideration. The Hunter 18.5 is one we felt warranted a closer look.

sailboatdata weekender 18

The buxom little 18.5 was produced from 1987 to 1993 (a quite different water-ballasted Hunter 19 superseded the 18.5 and was built from 1993 to 1996). The 18.5 featured a modern-looking cockpit and a cabin with as many as four berths. The sliding cabin hatch could be slid forward and hinged up, potentially offering something akin to standing headroom below, and the optional “Weekender Package” included a galley with ice chest, stove, and bucket sink. There was also a portable head located beneath the aft end of the V-berth—everything a small family might need for cruising.

Exterior design

Length and beam on the waterline have been extended as far as possible to make the Oceanis 38 quick to cut through the water, while increasing stability.  She offers high-performance and habitability second to none on this size of cruiser.

sailboatdata weekender 18

Interior design

Almost everything is possible inside the Oceanis 38. There is wide scope for different combinations in organizing the interior spaces and woodwork ambiances. The choice of a separate shower compartment is popular in the three cabin version. A unique feature on this size of cruiser, the fore cabin’s bed head faces in the same direction as the boat.

sailboatdata weekender 18

Open sailing

The Oceanis 38 rethinks the use of the boat, leaving the choice of its initial layout to the owner, while maintaining the potential to change arrangements at a later date. With the Daysailer, Weekender or Cruise, there are three ways to reorganize life on board the same boat.

sailboatdata weekender 18

Designed like a floating loft, this version of the Oceanis 38 does away with interior bulkheads in favour of a single room. The view is unobstructed and there is a stunning feeling of space. With equipment focussing on the essential, aft space for storage and an open cockpit, the Daysailer is open to everything.

Whether she has a two or three cabin plan, the Weekender version of the Oceanis 38 offers the greatest evolving potential over time and is the yacht that offers the greatest choice of layout: open or closed cabins, separate shower, fitted galley, extra inside/outside table, helmsman's seats, etc.

More conventional, the Cruiser version of the Oceanis 38 is equipped with a large galley facing the saloon and a bathroom with separate shower. It offers a choice between two or three fitted cabins. With the potential to evolve, the bulkhead can be removed from the fore cabin of this version to return that loft feeling.

Tartan Fantail

  • By Tim Murphy
  • Updated: November 4, 2014

Versatility was a big theme among this year’s new boats, and no builder exemplified that theme better than Tartan Yachts with its Fantail. A head-turner on the show docks, Tartan’s 26-foot Fantail comes in three versions: daysailer, club trainer and weekender. While the hull, cockpit dimensions and sailplan of all three versions are identical, the daysailer comes with a flush deck and cuddy cabin; the club trainer omits Tartan’s lovely brightwork for the sake of easy maintenance; and the weekender offers the simple accommodations of berths, burners, 12-volt reefer and head under a cabin house and foredeck that adds 10½ inches of headroom. All three versions are tiller-steered; we sailed the weekender.

“The premise behind the Fantail,” said Andy Drumm, Tartan’s director of sales and operations, “is to bring people into the family. Before this, our entry-level Tartan was our 3400, and that’s a big boat.” The Fantail is optimized for shorthanded sailing. All sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, several through turning blocks under the deck and coamings. The weekender and daysailer versions offer a self-tacking jib for upwind sailing and a retractable sprit for an asymmetric chute off the wind. Our Boat of the Year judging team sailed the boat in a whispery 6 to 8 knots — with a boat speed of 4.6 knots on the wind. Later in the week I hopped back on for a brief, rollicking reach up Maryland’s Severn River with the chute up and found her helm very nicely balanced.

Tartan is doing two things in its production that add significant value to its boats, especially if you’re comparing price with boats from other builders. Tartan’s resin-infused hulls and decks are built with epoxy, which is simply better than polyester — so much so that Tartan offers an unparalleled 15-year structural nonblistering warranty on its boats. The second thing is they build their own carbon pocket booms, which saves weight up high and simplifies the mainsail takedown. Tartan may soon offer a carbon mast for this boat.

Tartan is experimenting with electric propulsion as part of the Fantail’s standard package. The system is built around a 6-horsepower Torqeedo outboard and a single 24-volt lithium-ion battery. The Torqeedo controller panel with built-in GPS reads out the battery discharge rate, as well as speed. According to Drumm, a fully charged battery will last 16 hours at half throttle, or two hours at full throttle, pushing the boat at just over 6 knots. During our test, the motor provided plenty of power as we ran out of the calm harbor, but we had no chance to test it in a seaway or against a current, nor time to discharge and recharge the battery.

On the weekender we sailed, we would like to have seen an attractive cover or seat over the marine head, installed just inside the companionway to port, and the heavy free-floating hatch boards could benefit from further refinement.

Taking advantage of the Fantail’s street-legal 8-foot-5-inch beam, Tartan offers a great trailer option for this boat, at $6,500. It’s a double-axle trailer that, Drumm says, can be pulled behind a midsize SUV. Studs installed near the boat’s balance point accept a bracket that allows the Fantail to be hauled out with a yacht-club gin pole, omitting yard charges. All up, the Fantail is a fun, well-designed boat that looks mighty inviting for a young family of sailors.

See full specs of the Tartan Fantail here .

COMMENTS

  1. JOHNSON WEEKENDER 18

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).

  6. Johnson 18 weekender

Johnson 18 weekender. I've been looking to switch to a trailerable ballasted keelboat from my current boat; wayfarer 16. There's currently a 1985 Johnson 18 weekender listed for sale in my area but I'm not finding much info available on these boats. Can anyone tell me; are these boats realitivly stable, self righting boats with a self bailing ...

Daysailor/Weekender version of PEARSON 26 with larger cockpit, (no bridge deck) shorter coach roof, the same rig and somewhat lighter displacement. With a few cosmetic changes, this version was renamed PEARSON 26 ONE DESIGN (1978-1983?). Of these 2 variants, at least 300 were built. All PERSON 26's have outboard wells and nearly all rely on […]

  9. CAPE DORY Typhoon 18 Weekender (self-bailing) can it cross an ocean?

The typhoon is a remarkable well designed and built boat for its intended purpose, costal, lake and bay sailing for a day or a weekend. For it purpose it is a joy to own and to sail. For voyaging on the ocean there are other boats designed and built to that purpose. I know people have crossed the Atlantic in extremely small boats.

  10. Johnson Weekender 18

  11. Hunter 18.5

The Hunter 18.5 is one we felt warranted a closer look. The buxom little 18.5 was produced from 1987 to 1993 (a quite different water-ballasted Hunter 19 superseded the 18.5 and was built from 1993 to 1996). The 18.5 featured a modern-looking cockpit and a cabin with as many as four berths.

  14. The Hunter 18

the new Hunter 18 replaces the Hunter 170, which for several years was a mainstay in Hunter's line of small daysailers. Like the 170, the 18 can serve as both an easy-to-manage family daysailer and as a lively performance boat for those with more experience. At a glance the two boats look quite similar, sporting open transoms, centerboards and small sprayhoods forward.
