NAHLIN – CLASSIC MOTOR YACHT

In the summer of 2010 Nahlin steamed into Dartmouth, the first time she had entered a British port under her own steam since leaving for Romania in 1937. This was the culmination of the largest classic yacht restoration project ever undertaken and G.L. Watson & Co. acted as Owners’ Representative, Design Authority, Exterior Designer, Yacht Manager and Interior Designer of Crew & Service Areas.

Beyond the five years of incredible work that preceded the well publicised return to British waters there had been a 15 year campaign to save this preeminent classic yacht in which G. L. Watson & Co. played a leading role.

In 1929 G.L. Watson & Co. was commissioned by the heiress Lady Yule to design a steam yacht that would permit her to “visit every part of the globe she desired”. Following in a line of acknowledged classics we produced a design which was at the pinnacle of the evolution of clipper bow and counter stern steam yachts.

Clyde-built

Clyde-built by John Brown & Co., Nahlin’s elegance was acclaimed in her day and, with her extraordinary survival to the 21st century, she remains the ultimate classic power-yacht. As John Brown & Company’s Hull Number 533, Nahlin immediately preceded Cunard’s iconic liner the Queen Mary .  John Brown & Company were world leaders in shipbuilding and at the epicentre of maritime engineering. Along with the yard’s Queen Mary , QE II and Royal Yacht Britannia , Nahlin is an icon of engineering excellence.

Lady Yule recruited most of her crew from the Clyde and Western Isles of Scotland and their families’ historic photographs and memories, along with material from museums and archives of Clydebank and Glasgow, were invaluable in the restoration project.

Lady Yule (1930-1936)

Lady Yule was heiress to a considerable fortune, but in her own right she is known as one of the founders of the British film industry and was a major partner in Pinewood Studios along with J. Arthur Rank and John Corefield. An accomplished horsewoman she founded the Hanstead Stud Stables, endowed one of the first dedicated veterinary hospitals and several animal sanctuaries both in the UK and abroad.

Over the course of six years Lady Yule made several extended cruises, including a circumnavigation. In 1932 she wrote to  Nahlin’s designer James Rennie Barnett, senior partner of G.L. Watson & Co., that Nahlin was “the most beautiful yacht in the world, and the most seaworthy”. In 1936 having seen “every corner of the globe she desired to visit”, Lady Yule eventually made Nahlin available for charter or sale.

The Royal Yacht (1936-1939)

As the premier British yacht of the day, King Edward VIII chartered Nahlin in August of 1936 for a private cruise. The presence of Wallis Simpson aboard attracted great media attention. These news reports also brought Nahlin to the attention of King Carol II of Romania who acquired her in 1937. Less than two years later, with the outbreak of war, King Carol quit his throne and Nahlin was left on the backwaters of the Danube. Ironically, this was to be Nahlin’s salvation. Unlike many pre-war yachts, Nahlin was neither requisitioned for the war effort, nor modernised in the post war era. Instead she survived largely unmodified.

RESCUE (1988-1999)

In 1988 William Collier, a young yachtsman with a passion for classic boats, had recently moved to the south of France and with the encouragement of broker Nicholas Edmiston he set about investigating Nahlin’s fate. Pre-revolution Romania was largely closed to visitors, but with the aid of a Student Visa and a fair amount of pluck, Collier discovered Nahlin operating as a floating restaurant on the banks of the Danube. She was in a perilous state but, despite neglect, Nahlin’s beauty shone through. Inspired by Collier’s photographs the pair set about her rescue. With the collapse of the Soviet block and the Romanian revolution the yacht was sold to a privatised company. Edmiston and Collier began the hard task of her purchase & repatriation. With the volatile post-communist political situation there was much frustration, but finally in 1999 Nahlin returned to British waters and today Nahlin is once again registered in her home port of Glasgow.

Stabilisation & Archiving (1999-2005)

In the years following her return to the UK, G.L. Watson & Co engaged in a comprehensive programme to stabilise her condition, document all surviving material and  to prepare her for restoration. The ship was dry-docked and her hull comprehensively surveyed. Over 450 tons of debris and contaminants were removed. The surviving interior was surveyed, and CAD drawings produced of interior designs and panelling schemes. Casts were made to record delicate plaster mouldings and enrichments.

YACHT RESTORATION (2005-2010)

In the summer of 2010 Nahlin was re-commissioned following a total restoration under the supervision of the vessel’s original designers G.L. Watson & Co.  The first phase of restoration work on the hull was carried out by Nobiskrug shipyard in Rendsburg with the subsequent engineering and fit-out at Blohm & Voss Repair GmbH in Hamburg. Participating in the project were firms from across the UK, Europe and beyond, including Scottish and Merseyside engineering companies who had supplied John Brown’s some eighty years ago. The standards achieved during this yacht restoration broke new ground in restoration quality and have revealed the original beauty of this acclaimed classic. The re-commissioning of Nahlin in the summer of 2010 brought the best possible conclusion to a twenty year plus campaign to save this preeminent classic yacht.

Nahlin visits the River Dart

Yachting World

  • July 19, 2010

One of the world's finest privately owned yachts - understood to be owned by vacuum cleaner entrepreneur James Dyson - was a visitor to the River Dart last weekend

Nahlin

This is Nahlin, recently re-built by Blohm + Voss in Germany and pictured last week end on the River Dart in Devon. The 300ft long yacht was originally built for Lady Annie Henrietta Yule in 1930 by the John Brown shipyard and was later owned by the Romanian Royal Family. She was also chartered in the 1930s by King Edward VIII and used by him and Mrs Wallis Simpson.

Nahlin was ‘discovered’ some years ago lying on the River Danube by yachting historian Dr. William Collier, who is the owner of the G.L. Watson naval architect firm responsible for Nahlin’s original design. The company has done much of the cataloguing and re-design work necessary to turn Nahlin into a yacht with a modern inventory.

Yacht broker Nicholas Edmiston arranged to have the vessel, which was originally steam-powered, shipped first to Falmouth, then to Liverpool and finally to Germany where the re-fit work has been underway for some years.

It has been reported that Nahlin is now owned by James Dyson of vacuum cleaner fame.

A Summary of Motor Yacht NAHLIN

John Brown & Sons completed motor yacht NAHLIN in 1930. Therefore, she has the distinction of being built in the United Kingdom. NAHLIN is a yacht which had naval architecture and design finished by G.L. Watson and GL Watson. This superyacht NAHLIN is able to accommodate overnight the number of 14 guests aboard together with around 47 crewmembers. Launched for 1930 the classic interior design showcases the classical sagacity in the designing of Sir Charles Allom.

Construction & Designing for Luxury Yacht NAHLIN

GL Watson was the naval architect firm involved in the formal vessel plans for NAHLIN. Also the company GL Watson successfully worked on this venture. Interior designer Sir Charles Allom was employed for the overall interior styling. In 1930 she was actually launched with accolade in Clydebank and post sea trials and finishing touches was thereafter handed over to the yacht owner. John Brown & Sons completed their new build motor yacht in the United Kingdom. A spacious proportion is manifested with a total beam (width) of 11.03 m / 36.2 ft. With a 4.51m (14.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material steel was used in the building of the hull of the motor yacht. Her superstructure above deck is fashioned from steelandwood. Over the deck of NAHLIN she is 90.22 (296 ft) in length. In 2008 extra refit work and modernisation was also finished.

The Main Engines And The Speed That M/Y NAHLIN Can Reach:

Connected to her Curtis-Brown engine(s) are twin screw propellers. The main engine of the yacht produces 2200 horse power (or 1619 kilowatts). She is fitted with 4 engines. The total power for the boat is therefore 8800 HP or 6475 KW.

For Superyacht NAHLIN She has Guest Accommodation Capacity For:

Offering cabins for a limit of 14 yacht guests spending the night, the NAHLIN accommodates everyone comfortably. She also requires approximately 47 professional crew to run.

Inside the last company building boats in Boston

W henever you drive the Tobin Bridge, just before you leave Charlestown, you’re passing over the last company making boats in Boston.

Along the Mystic River, with several of the Tobin’s trestles planted in the parking lot, Boston Boatworks is continuing a tradition that reaches back centuries. Boston has built boats big and small, from the USS Constitution constructed in the North End, to the clipper ships of Donald McKay’s shipyard in East Boston, to the “unsinkable” Boston Whaler, designed in Braintree.

Walk into Boston Boatworks, and you’re greeted by the smell of the special glue the company uses to make the carbon fiber hulls of its watercraft. Go a little further, and you’ll encounter a half-dozen boats in various stages of construction — including an electric ferry for a popular campground on Three Mile Island in Lake Winnipesaukee.

Boston Boatworks started life in 1995, as a partnership between Scott Smith, Mark Lindsay, and Geoff Berger. (Lindsay, a renowned designer of sailboats, died in 2019, and Berger is now CEO of Hinckley Yachts, a Rhode Island manufacturer.) The company’s original home was East Boston, in the former Bethlehem Atlantic Works shipyard, which repaired ships for the Navy and Coast Guard.

It outgrew its space there and moved in 2014 to a three-story building with offices on the top, a factory floor, and massive roll-up doors at both ends. One of those roll-up doors faces the Mystic, where docks and a lift allow the company to get boats in and out of the water.

Boston Boatworks first made custom racing sailboats, but eventually concluded that that market was too small. But the company realized that lightweight materials and designs used to make sailboats faster had not penetrated the world of powerboats.

With powerboats, Smith explained, “you can overcome a lot of design deficiencies just by adding more horsepower. Our approach was to take weight out of the boat, use smaller engines — which have less fuel consumption — and materials that don’t fatigue as the boat ages.”

Rather than traditional fiberglass, Boston Boatworks chose to use more expensive carbon fiber — which is lighter, stiffer, and tougher — and borrowed manufacturing techniques from aircraft production, which also uses the material. If you’ve seen the Encore Casino’s water shuttles — built at a cost of about $1 million each — you’ve seen their work.

In the early 2000s, Boston Boatworks was approached by a North Carolina company, MJM Yachts, to build a line of ocean-going yachts; MJM wanted to marry Boston Boatworks’ manufacturing expertise with a sleek, low-slung design from Doug Zurn, a naval architect in Marblehead.

MJM quickly became Boston Boatworks’ largest customer. But in 2019, Boston Boatworks’ relationship with MJM abruptly ended when MJM decided to set up its own factory in North Carolina, citing lower labor and other costs.

That forced Boston Boatworks to scramble. One lifeline came from a $20 million contract to build 10 boats for the Barton & Gray Mariner’s Club, a New Hampshire company that is like Zipcar for the yachting set. Members can reserve a boat and captain in places such as Nantucket, East Hampton, or Boca Raton.

That deal let Barton & Gray design a boat especially for its members, who go out for the day rather than on overnight trips. What had been a sleeping cabin in the Hinckley yachts the club offers became an outdoor space in the bow. The kitchen moved upstairs so that people could more easily gather around the food.

The 48-foot boat, called the Daychaster, is longer, wider, and larger than the Hinckleys, but it is 15 to 20 percent more fuel efficient because of the materials used by Boston Boatworks, said Douglas Gray, Barton & Gray’s cofounder and chief marketing officer.

The Daychaser has become the premium boat in the Barton & Gray’s fleet: members who want access to the Daychaser pay a higher level of annual dues — at least $80,000, in addition to a $20,000 initiation fee. “The Daychaser is very much a competitive advantage for us,” Gray said.

Barton & Gray recently signed a contract for its 16th Daychaser boat; three others have been sold to individual owners.

In 2023, Boston Boatworks announced a new boat that would be the first to bear its name: the Boston Boatworks Offshore Express Cruiser. Three are in various stages of production; a fourth is slated to get started next month.

The first customer in line is Ed Kaye, chief executive of a Bedford biotech company, Stoke Therapeutics. Kaye, who describes himself as “a sailor at heart,” expects to take delivery of the 50-foot craft with twin diesel engines later this year. The base price for that boat, the first model in the company’s Offshore Express Cruiser line, dubbed the BB44, is $2.85 million.

“The design appeals to sailors who are really focused on well-made and functional boats — not just pretty, fast boats,” Kaye said. He also likes the idea of “having a local group of people build something of quality — something that you’ll be proud of.”

Despite a COVID-fueled surge in recent years, sales of boats longer than 35 feet in recent years fell 9 percent in the first four months of this year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Boston Boatworks has reduced its workforce about 30 percent from its peak of 140 in 2019.

The company is still putting a dozen or so new boats into the water each year. The latest: the Appy, the electric ferry bound for service on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Smith, 66, said he plans to stick around his company as long as he can be useful. Boston Boatworks, he added, has never been about making boats at the lowest possible price, or at the fastest possible rate.

“We want to build the best,” he says. “There has always been an understanding that knowledgeable owners understand the value of what we do — and there’s a limited market of those.”

The Below Deck Med Crew Runs Into a “F-cking Expensive” Problem: “Worst Possible Time"

Two major yacht issues cause Captain Sandy Yawn and her crew to panic on Below Deck Mediterranean.

On the Below Deck franchise, sometimes things go wrong on the yachts. Other times, things go  really  wrong.

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck Mediterranean  on Mondays at 9/8c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo app .

On Season 9, Episode 6 of  Below Deck Mediterranean , which aired on July 8, the yachties geared up for stormy seas ahead when a mishap with the anchor created a "f-cking expensive" problem.

On the last day of their charter, the guests were happily enjoying a delicious breakfast from chef Johnathan Shillingford  while deckhands  Nathan Gallagher  and  Joe Bradley  teamed up to pull up the anchor and set sail back to port. The yachties, however, ran into an issue: they were having trouble with the windlass, or a mechanical device that helps raise and lower the anchor on a boat.

Nathan reported to Sandy that he had "no power" on the windlass on the starboard side of the boat, adding that it was "not connecting" to pull the anchor up and out of the water successfully. After a few more tries, the deckhands and Sandy grew more and more concerned.

"A windlass is like a spool of thread," Sandy began in a confessional interview. "It has a clutch so you free it from the teeth that haul the anchor. This starboard windlass ... it isn't grabbing, so we're having a difficult time trying to haul the anchor."

The second engineer, Luka, came up to the bridge to tell Sandy the windlass is most likely "disengaged from the shaft." The crew then hatched a new plan: use the other windlass on the port side of the boat with a line to help bring the chain and anchor up.

"To use a port windlass you have to release the clutch, pop the drum up, wrap the line around it, and then haul in a little bit at a time," Sandy explained. "Worst case scenario, if I can't get the anchor off the bottom, I have to leave the anchor."

Meanwhile, more problems arise.

The  Below Deck Mediterranean  crew faces issues with the tender

As if the crew wasn't dealing with enough, another issue came their way: the tender wasn't starting.

Aesha Calls Bri Out for Sleeping in Joe & Nathan's Cabin: "Are You Doing It to Prove a Point?"

After Sandy sent Piers, the second officer, to the tender, he relayed a message to the captain about a problem. "The batteries were left on last night so it's probably run flat," he explained.

"The battery's dead on the tender. It's like one thing after another," Sandy lamented in an interview. "And this is the worst possible time for a mistake like this."

Sandy then confronted Nathan about the mishap, realizing it was likely a deckhand who last docked the tender and left the batteries running. Nathan wasn't sure about the situation, prompting Sandy to call Joe to wake up bosun Iain Maclean for further questioning.

When Iain came to the bridge to speak to Sandy, he confessed he was the last to dock the tender. "Yeah, you gotta turn off the batteries," Sandy says to the bosun. "I need you to help sort that out."

The  Below Deck Mediterranean  crew fails to pull up the anchor

As the struggle with the anchor continued, Nathan admitted to his fellow deckhands, "[A] new anchor is f-cking expensive." As they worked to solve the problem, things got worse as the rope they were using snapped.

"Cap, that was the line snapping," Nathan communicated to Sandy, who exclaimed, "Put the brake on! Stop the anchor, stop the anchor!"

Now delayed by 25 minutes, further panic ensued. Can the crew remedy the situation and get the guests back to the dock in time for their afternoon travel plans? Find out by tuning in to Below Deck Mediterranean Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.
