The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

5 things to do in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach that don't involve the beach

When I think of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, I automatically think of going to the beach and putting my toes in the sand. We've done many day-trips to the beach there!

But there are many other options to explore that don't involve going to the actual beach. Sometimes it's a little too cold to play in the water.

Here are five ideas for spending the day or weekend in the Wilmington area without going to the actual beach:

Take a horsedrawn carriage ride through downtown Wilmington

This was one of our favorite things during a recent visit! We took one of four tours offered by Springbrook Farms. Just go to Market Street, between Water and Front streets, and you will see the carriage or a sign that tells you when the carriage will be back from its latest tour.

It is located across from Kilwin's Chocolates & Ice Cream, so you can always stop in there for some yummy ice cream and fudge while you wait! Springbrook Farms rescues abused and unwanted Percheron draft horses. You learn about the horses as much as the history of downtown during these tours. The tour guides are funny and very knowledgeable about the architecture of the buildings. We learned so much and had a great time. You pay at the end of the tour. It is $14 for adults and $6 for children. Tours are offered Monday and Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The United States Colored Troops won that battle and it led to the fall of Wilmington. North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes created this really amazing tribute featuring life-size bronze sculptures of soldiers. He was able to make the sculpture using "the cast features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story -- USCT descendants, re-enactors, veterans, and community leaders," according to the art museum's website. You can see the sculpture outdoors along the trail near the museum.

There is also a really great interactive section for children to enjoy. You can see bugs and other organisms up-close under microscopes!

We were also blown away by State of the Art, which is a new exhibit that is running through Sept. 18. It is a huge collection of contemporary art by artists either currently living in or from North Carolina. There is so much to see in this exhibit. There is everything from photography to 3D art and sculptures. There is a blue giraffe in the center that I couldn't take my eyes off of. Admission for this exhibit is $5 in addition to regular museum admission. Those 18 years and younger though are admitted for free.

Cameron Art Museum is located at 3201 South 17th St. in Wilmington.

Take a sunset cruise

When we visited the area, we stayed at Blockade Runner resort. It was beautiful with private beach access, hammocks and its own garden. We saw lots of kids playing on the grass near the gardens and we even spotted a big brown bunny running around! The hotel also offers cruises along the coastal waters. There are sunset cruises that offer a relaxing and scenic view of the beach. We really enjoyed the peaceful cruise and sunset views. If you'd rather "island hop," they also have a daytime cruise that takes you to nearby uninhabited islands. Both cruises are about 90 minutes and are $50 for adults and $25 for children.

Explore nature

Airlie Gardens is in bloom right now so you will want to make your way over there for a tour of their 67 acres! The walking trails and gardens are spectacular this time of year. The gardens have also been the site of several movie and TV shoots including "Dawson's Creek" and "One Tree Hill."

Airlie Gardens is located at 300 Airlie Road in Wilmington. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last entry at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12 years old. You must purchase tickets in advance online. All tickets are valid one year from the purchase date and cannot be used for entry into special events

Another fun fact we learned while in Wilmington - the area is the only place in the world where Venus Flytraps grow naturally in the wild. These carnivorous plants grow in a small section within a 75-mile radius of Wilmington. We saw some at the Piney Ridge Nature Preserve, 3800 Canterbury Road in Wilmington. There are many Venus Flytraps growing along this trail which runs about three-quarters of an acre. We couldn't find them at first, then we realized they are much smaller than expected. They actually grow close to the ground too! Don't touch them and also don't even think of stealing one because that's a felony in North Carolina!

Take a tour of the Battleship North Carolina

You can see the battleship across the river from downtown Wilmington. It is pretty big and has lots to explore. During World War II, the battleship participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars.

The boat nearly went down when a Japanese torpedo hit the battleship's hull in 1942. There is so much to see onboard the ship (plus you can even buy a piece of the ship!).

I took a short daytime tour and stayed after-hours for a special paranormal investigation with The Ghost Guild (more on that in an upcoming story!).

Battleship North Carolina is open everyday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last ticket sales are 4 p.m. Tickets are $14 for those ages 12 years and older; $10 for those 65 years and older and $6 for children ages 6 to 11 years old. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Active or retired military and their spouses and dependents are admitted for $10.

• The Donut Inn, 1427 Military Cutoff Rd, Wilmington - Yes, Britt's Donuts in Carolina Beach is amazing, but we also love The Donut Inn. Great flavors and they are huge!!
• Marina Grill, 18 Harnett St, Wilmington - Nice outdoor seating and menu options for just about everyone. We loved the crab stuffed salmon.
• East Oceanfront Dining at Blockade Runner Resort, 275 Waynick Blvd., Wrightsville Beach - They host a weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch that is worth checking out! Plus, Friday and Saturday nights they offer a lobster special - which features an entire lobster! The menu also boasts fresh seafood and kid-friendly options like chicken tenders and French fries. It's no wonder the menu is good though - it is run by Executive Chef Jessica Cabo, who was a semi-finalist in Season 1 of the Gordon Ramsay's "Hell’s Kitchen." And you know Chef Ramsay knows talent!

Booking Conditions

For bookings made more than 30 days prior to travel, a 25% deposit is due to secure your booking with the balance due 30 days prior to travel. For bookings made within 30 days of travel, the full payment is due immediately to secure your booking. If we do not receive your full payment within 30 days of your travel date and you do not contact us to cancel, your deposit is forfeited and your booking may be automatically cancelled by us, the supplier or both.

Prices are quoted in Australian dollars, inclusive of GST, and all payments must be made in Australian dollars. Your reservation will only be confirmed when funds have been received and are cleared. The Whitsundays Central Reservations Centre is not responsible for delays in postal delivery, bank or payment system processing. It is your responsibility to ensure that payments are received within the times specified. If the deposit or final payment is not received by the due date, The Whitsundays Central Reservations Centre has the right cancel the booking. If your final payment is not paid by the due date and in any event within 30 days of your departure, we have the right to cancel your booking and retain the deposit in full without any reimbursement to cover our costs and those of any supplier.

Cancellations and Amendments to Bookings

If you wish to cancel or amend any booking made you need to contact us in writing. You can only cancel or amend a confirmed booking by contacting us directly. If you do not contact us to cancel prior to your booking departure date, you may forfeit your deposit and further costs.

Cancellation Charges and Amendment Fees

Any cancellation or amendment made more than 30 days before travel will incur an administration fee of 25% of the total booking fee. All cancellations or amendments made within 30 days of your travel date departure will incur both an administration fee of 25% in addition to the individual supplier’s fees. Any changes requested to your booking, including but not limited to dates, are subject to availability and if they are not available, you may be required to cancel and agree to the cancellation terms. IMPORTANT NOTE: Some services and activities may not permit any refund for certain bookings. You should check with the individual supplier or The Whitsundays Central Reservations Centre prior to paying for your booking to confirm any special non-refundable conditions.

Travel Insurance

We recommend that you take out travel insurance to cover your reservation, and valuable items (e.g. cameras). Your travel insurance policy should include coverage to protect against unforeseen and last-minute cancellations or medical conditions that may prevent travel and also to cover any medical emergencies during travel at minimum.

Supplier Tours and Services Changes

In the unlikely case of a vessel break down, maintenance or unavailability, the supplier will supply an alternate vessel of a similar standard and quality. Itineraries may be affected by elements beyond our and the supplier’s control such as wind, tide, rain, storm or other weather conditions which make travel dangerous and require a delay or cancellation. It is the skipper's requirement to ensure passenger safety at all times and may use his/her professional judgment in any manner to keep his/her guests and crew safe. In the instance of such delay or cancellation, alternative options will be provided by the supplier. In the event a cancellation or delay occurs and your tour or service is cancelled and rescheduled, you will receive a full refund if you are unable to rebook your tour or service.

You are using these services and taking any tours at your own risk. We are not responsible for any loss or damage, including direct, indirect or consequential loss you may suffer as a result of your reservation, booking or anything related to your tour or services provided by any supplier. You need to ensure you are medically sound, fit and physically able to use the services. We are not liable for the event that you are refused access to any services or tours due to your medical, physical or other reasons, including intoxication. Any such claims should be addressed to the suppliers directly. You should note that sailing can be a dangerous activity and while crews will make every effort to ensure your safety, they cannot be accountable for actions or injury to you that may be ‘beyond their control’. Every effort is make to ensure your safety and you may be required to complete a pre departure questionnaire, and sign a travel agreement waiver during the check-in process of your tour with the supplier directly. We are not affiliated with nor responsible for our suppliers in any way other than as intermediary to arrange their services on you and their behalf. If you have any issues, injury, suffer any loss or damage, you need to take it up with the supplier directly. If we are obligated to cancel your travel arrangements for any reason, the liability of will be limited to a refund of all monies paid by you.

​Passengers must always adhere to the directions given by the Captain. Passengers agree to indemnify us against any and all claims arising from their participation in the ride, including any and all claims for injury, damage or loss. Clients should note that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard our clients, we cannot be held responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of the clients which are beyond our control. A signed release will be required from all participants on departure. We recommend you take out travel insurance & assess your suitability to this activity prior to commencement.

Refund Policy

Once purchased, tickets are non-refundable. If Pioneer Adventures needs to cancel a ride due to inclement weather or for any other reason, rescheduling options (subject to availability) will be made available and in the event no options are available a refund will be issued. No refunds within 24 hours of departure unless the Operator cancels the activity due to waterway, or weather conditions, insufficient reservations and any other unforeseen event or circumstances. Otherwise, refunds are granted solely at the discretion of the Agent according to the Operator's cancellation policy. Where there is a‘no show’ without prior notification or cancellation in required time are not eligible for a refund. Refunds may only be obtained from the Booking Agent. Note no transaction fee is refundable.
