6 haunted Michigan destinations a car's ride from Lansing

haunted house lansing mi

For the believers among us, there are plenty of supposedly haunted sites in and around Lansing to visit each fall: the old Stimson Hospital, the Abigail senior apartments, the Seven Gables Road dead-end and Oak Park, once the city's first cemetery.

More: An inside look at the 6 most haunted places in the Lansing area

But if you've exhausted those local offerings — or just want to take a day trip — there are paranormal adventures to be had further away from the capital. Here are some destinations for those who want to hit the road and try to glimpse the other side, arranged by driving distance from Lansing.

Always check visitation guidelines ahead of time, and never visit abandoned or private property without permission.

Happy hunting.

Less than 1 hour away

Belding Library, Belding

Located just outside Grand Rapids, the Alvah N. Belding Library was commissioned in 1917 by Belding, a silk magnate, as a memorial for his parents, Hiram Belding and Mary Wilson.

It's believed that the spirit of a little girl haunts the library stacks, where visitors have reported hearing laughter when nobody else was around.

National House Inn, Marshall

Built in 1835, this Marshall bed and breakfast is the state’s oldest operating hotel, serving as a stopping point between Detroit and Chicago for travelers. Due to hidden passages and lookouts throughout the building, many believe it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, though others attribute the crannies to Prohibition.

Visitors have reported seeing a woman in red on the National House Inn's front staircase and roaming the halls, which in spiritual circles indicates the ghost of a scorned lover or sex worker killed by a client.

1 to 2 hours away

Historic Holly Hotel, Holly

Now an upscale restaurant, this former Victorian-style hotel embraces its reputation as a haunted inn. Management welcomes regular visits from the Ghost Hunters of Southern Michigan  to try and glimpse paranormal happenings there, and staff lead tours explaining phenomena reported over the years, according to the hotel’s website.

The most frequently reported spirit is that of John Hirst, the building's first hotelier from its early 20th century beginnings as a social hub. Visitors should watch for a man in a frock coat and top hat or pay attention for the aroma of cigar smoke, which multiple visitors claim they've smelled.

The Whitney, Detroit

Another destination where ghost-hunting comes with a meal, the Whitney in Detroit was dubbed one of the most haunted restaurants in America by Syfy network's  "Ghost Hunters ."

The residence-turned-restaurant was once home to lumber baron David Whitney Jr., who died six years after its completion in 1894. His spirit — and that of his first wife, Flora, who died before the mansion was completed — are said to haunt the building. Believers point to a hinky elevator, which has been seen moving between floors unprompted.

The restaurant offers a paranormal dining tour with a four-course dinner and expedition through the mansion grounds, but it's currently booked until November.

Felt Mansion, Holland

Dorr Felt, an inventor who patented an early mechanical calculator, built this mansion as a gift for his wife, Agnes, who died six weeks after the family moved into the home. Felt himself died a year and a half later. Visitors attribute dark figures sweeping over the floors and doors that open by themselves to the Felts still poking around their house.

On Halloween weekend, the mansion will host Hauntings & History Nights, a candlelit self-guided tour of areas restricted to everyday visitors for $25. An overnight stay is available for private groups for $1,200.

2+ hours away

Traverse City State Hospital

Traverse City State Hospital opened in 1885 and was known for "beauty as therapy" initiatives like lush grounds and a ban on straitjackets. The hospital is now the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, a reimagined community with residences, shops and restaurants on the former grounds of the institution.

Though the Village avoids terms like "haunted" and "ghost," it offers twilight tours of its grounds and underground steam tunnels by flashlight in addition to more conventional historic tours of the campus.

Among the purportedly haunted attractions at the hospital is the "Hippie Tree," an old willow with tangled spray-painted limbs that enthusiasts believe is a portal to hell.

HAUNTED MICHIGAN: Lansing’s Turner-Dodge House?

There have been very few actual reports of any type of paranormal experiences at Turner-Dodge House but there have always been rumors and beliefs that a mansion as old as this MUST be haunted. Here are two stories I've found:

1) A photographer says he was taking pictures of a model on the grounds outside the mansion. When he looked up, he saw a man with a beard standing in the window on the top floor; when the photographer turned his camera to the window, the figure was gone. Upon developing his pictures, he did find one with a bearded man standing in the window; he believes it was a ghost. If this is true, I would LOVE to see that picture posted somewhere. Even so, in my opinion, it could very well have been a human inside unless the photog has more details he's leaving out.

2) In 1984, two boys and their uncle were talking out in the parking lot of the mansion when they noticed a smiling man looking down on them, again from the top window. Seconds later, the house was filled with flashing lights and other windows had people appearing in them. This frightened the three so much, they took off through a field; one boy saw a tree stump disappear as he ran toward it.

Granted, these two tales are skimpy and there may be easy explanations for both of them; but they MUST have been creepier than it seems for these people to report their separate cases .

BRIEF BACKSTORY: The Turner-Dodge House was built in 1858 (on what is now 100 E. North Street) by James Turner, who moved to Lansing from Mason and had a general store inside Lansing's first hotel, the Seymour House. In 1899, Frank Dodge (Turner's son-in-law), bought the house and made improvements. The City of Lansing bought the house and the property in 1974, two years after it was listed as an historic site. The mansion has been described as a "happy house" by those who have lived there ever since 1858; many wonderful times were spent by children and adults alike on the property. Chief Okemos spent evenings there and many Native Americans traveled by on the trails. The land was also visited by bears and many more wild animals. Read more about those 'happy' times at the mansion by CLICKING HERE . It is currently a museum opened to everyone and I suggest you pay a visit; especially if you've never been there... the hidden staircase and third floor ballroom were treats for me when I visited. See mansion pictures inside and out by CLICKING HERE .

Again, it's understandable why some may feel it's haunted, since it's a beautiful gothic old mansion...but if anyone else has any tales to tell, please do. Do I believe it's haunted? Not yet.

Explore Greater Lansing’s haunted history

Tyler Schneider/City Pulse

Whether or not you believe in ghosts, spirits and other paranormal entities, the following “haunted” locations throughout Greater Lansing provide plenty of fascinating lore and historical tidbits for those looking to immerse themselves in spooky season without breaking the bank.

Michigan State Capitol

100 N. Capitol Ave., Lansing

There are a slew of government buildings that are believed to be haunted, but Michigan’s Capitol may be among the spookiest. When construction was finished in 1878, the $1.2 million Victorian-era structure featured 139 rooms, magnificent banisters and plenty of room for the unknown. Workers have not seemed to fare well here. In the 1880s, it’s said that a page tried to jump between the railings of the grand staircases and fell to his death. Between then and now, at least three others have died on the job during subsequent restoration efforts.

Michigan State University

East Lansing

Founded in 1855, it’s probably not all that surprising to hear that several buildings on the MSU campus have been the sites of reported hauntings. These include Beaumont Tower, Beal Botanical Garden, the MSU Museum, the Physical Plant, the Fairchild Theatre, the old Saints’ Rest dormitory and numerous other dorm buildings, such as Mayo Hall, where a spirit students and faculty believe is Mary Mayo, the building’s namesake, reportedly plays the piano in the Red Room. Another campus legend surrounds the school’s “dungeons,” or underground steam tunnels.

Tyler Schneider/City Pulse

The Abigail

715 W. Willow St., Lansing

Abigail Rogers had this building constructed for use as the Michigan Female College in 1858. It served in that capacity through 1869 before being converted into the Michigan School for the Blind 10 years later. The school operated for more than a century and even saw Stevie Wonder enroll in 1964. After its closure, the school stood vacant for more than two decades before the building was repurposed for use as a new senior living facility. Prior to that development, numerous homeless people were reported to have tried to take up residence here, but something seems to have driven most of them away. Some speculate that Abigail Rogers herself is behind the uneasiness. The Abigail has been on the National Register of Historic Places since July 2018.

Turner-Dodge House

100 E. North St., Lansing

Constructed in 1855 as the Dodge Mansion, a bearded apparition allegedly paces the halls of this Georgian Revival brick structure. He can also reportedly be seen standing in windows at night. Marion Turner, one of the house’s first residents, is also believed by some to occupy its hallowed halls. The house was a private residence until 1958, when it was acquired by the Great Lakes Bible College for use as a school through 1972. The city of Lansing bought it in 1974, and it has hosted several paranormal investigations and festivals since. Friday evening (Oct. 27), the site will host its latest, A Ghostly Night at Turner-Dodge House.

Stimson Hospital

101 W. Plain St., Eaton Rapids

This 5,000-square-foot Eaton Rapids mansion, built in 1874, began its life as a private residence, but it was most famously a hospital for four decades, starting in 1917. During that tenure, it featured one of the first X-ray machines in Michigan, was an early adopter of cesarean sections and served as the birth and deathplaces for thousands of individuals. Unfortunately, its history has also been marred by tragedy. In 1919, one of its founders and primary physicians, Dr. Francis Blanchard, died in an elevator shaft after falling 12 feet. The hospital’s two other founders also died within its walls. Reports of spooky occurrences followed, including disembodied voices and phantom footsteps, even after the hospital shut down and became apartments in the 1950s. The property is now owned by Pam and Chris Sturgill, who operate it as a bed and breakfast and rent it out for ghost tours.

Mid-Michigan woman turns barn into haunted house

Posted: October 14, 2023 | Last updated: December 16, 2023

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Cheryl Underwood started putting on haunted houses in 2020 in her front yard, and the spooky spaces quickly became popular. But this year she has upgraded to a bigger space where the community can enjoy a “haunted mermaid barn.”

With a current collection of more than 200 skeletons–some small, some big and some mermaids–Underwood’s haunted house near Williamston just opened for the season.

“I love Halloween. As a little kid, my dad always made Halloween very important to me, emotionally…I love giving people an exciting free, fun place to go, a safe place to go and visit,” Underwood said.

In the past few years, some of Underwood’s neighbors had issues with her front yard display causing traffic jams. That’s why she decided to switch things up, taking her Halloween display to a whole new level and a whole new location. “Everything happens for a reason, and having it in this barn has just been exquisite,” Underwood said.

Though the haunted barn is full of skeletons, the scenery gets quite a bit more specific. “Many of the creations around here are not just skeletons, but they’re skeletons doing certain things,” Underwood said. “There’s skeletons that are drinking, doing shots over there at our little card table. There are skeletons with mermaids hanging out of their mouth. There’s skeletons that are rowing down the river, the purple river we created.”

Underwood said she feels blessed she can offer this free fun to people. “The community is overjoyed,” she said. “There aren’t that many free things that people can do as a family. It’s not too scary, there’s a lot of scary creatures, but there’s no one jumping out. It’s not a really freaky haunted house where people are going to be scared to death. The community absolutely loves it.”

You can see Underwood’s haunted house any evening from Oct. 10-31. The hours from Sunday-Thursday are 6-9 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays it’s open from 6-10 p.m.

The haunted house is in partnership with Wamhoff Farms, and it all takes place at 3494 Burkley Road, Williamston.

A crowdsourced, historical record of

1028 Britten Avenue

Does 1028 britten avenue have a dark past, reports ( 1 ), references ( 0 ).

I grew up in this house and have many stories of unexplainable experiences there, from dishes rattling when I was home alone to figures sitting on the end of my bed. Other family members of mine also witnessed paranormal activity there, one being a tall dark figure in the middle of the family room, another encounter that bit them, which I witnessed the marks on their side. It was a daily thing to hear heavy human footsteps coming from the attic above the bedrooms, as well as coming up the staircase that leads to the bedrooms. There is only one bathroom in the house, in which the attic door is located. Countless times when I went to the bathroom during the night, heavy footsteps came down the attic staircase and stopped at the door, a couple times running back up the stairs causing me to rush back to my room. The attic door had countless names written and carved into the inside of it, I'm not sure why. I can go on and on. I tried reaching out to the local historical society for any information that could explain anything and never received a response. If anyone else has experienced living in this house, I'd love to share stories.
