The Allure of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup

It’s a challenging race at a stunning location that draws some of the best sailors in the world.

There is no shortage of beautiful sailing regattas. Few offer the same combination of world-class sailors and yachts, outstanding geography and conditions, professional racecourse management and refined yacht club hospitality as the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup .

Most high-end regattas typically draw boats in the 20-, 30- and 40-foot range, with limited numbers of larger yachts, or the events are organized for a particular design, like for the 23-foot J/70s, in which all competing boats are identical.

Not here. The Maxi cup, which is being hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and which begins on Monday in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, is open only to maxi yachts. According to the regatta’s Notice of Race, this means sailboats that measure at least 60 feet, bow to stern. Of the 50 yachts that are competing this year, almost half exceed 80 feet, with the largest entry — the J-Class yacht Svea — measuring 143 feet.

These are fast, expensive and complex sailboats — with an average crew size of 25 sailors — which will race against similar yachts around tactically engaging racecourses. Veterans say the regatta’s dependable weather patterns, convivial atmosphere, and the yacht club’s hospitality and organization make it one of sailing’s greatest events.

Pier Luigi Loro Piana, the owner of My Song, a Club Swan 80, described the Maxi cup as the most professional and well-organized regatta on the Mediterranean Sea.

“We do a week of really beautiful and good sailing,” Piana said, referring to the regatta. “You can be 100 percent satisfied if you have good weather, good wind, good people, good food. During the race, after the race, there’s always something nice to enjoy.”

Andrea Recordati, the owner of Bullitt, a Wally 93 , said it was the most prestigious race on the Mediterranean circuit.

He said that other maxi-class regattas might draw, on average, six or seven yachts that are his competitive peers. “Here you could have 15, if not even 20,” Recordati said.

While their designs differ, each yacht in the Maxi cup has a handicap rating (think of golf) that allows vessels of different lengths, widths and weights to race competitively. The yachts “are relatively similar,” Piana said, “so we can make a very nice regatta.”

And with a bigger fleet size comes a higher level of competition.

“It’s the big dance,” said Peter Holmberg, an Olympic silver medalist and the helmsman of Topaz, a J-Class yacht. “Everybody goes to it, and so it will give us the greatest competition of all the events we’ll do in the Med over the year. If you’re going to put one on your list, it’s usually [the] Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. And is that the draw? Of course it is.”

Then there are the racecourses.

The regatta offers two styles of racing. The windward-leeward courses are set in open water and use movable buoys that are set parallel with the wind to test each team’s ability to sail upwind, or into the wind, and downwind, or with the wind.

The longer coastal races instead employ the area’s natural geographical features, including the nearby Maddalena archipelago, to create courses that require teams to sail fast at a variety of wind angles.

“Coastal racing is more interesting,” Holmberg said. “It’s more diverse, complex, challenging.”

These challenges include the art of predicting what the still-unseen wind will be doing around the islands, anticipating how this will affect tactics and ensuring that the yacht is flying the right sails.

“Windward-leeward is a sprint, and coastal is a marathon of many sprints,” he said.

While he enjoys both styles of racing, and was clear that both have their place at the regatta, Holmberg said that if he had to choose one, it would be the coastal courses: “It gives us the extreme range, and it tests you on all aspects.”

Paul Westlake, a 10-time world champion sailor and the trim coordinator on Svea, said racing a “coastal course is a pretty stressful time for navigators.”

“It makes the racecourse much more open for the tacticians and strategists,” he said, adding that there are numerous places where yachts can hit the bottom. “Everyone is trying to cut the corners and push as hard as they can.”

Recordati said the regatta attracted some of the best sailors in the world. He said that the loads — or forces — generated by the maxi yachts demanded expertise. “They are pretty high-tech pieces of machinery, which — if they break or are not run properly — can not only be economically damaging, but it can be very dangerous for the crew.”

Anthony Kotoun, a five-time world champion sailor and the strategist aboard Galateia, a Wally Cento, described the regatta as the Masters for maxi yachts.

“It is called the Maxi yacht cup, but in the lingo, it’s called just the Maxi Worlds,” he said, adding that it’s the unofficial world championship of the big boats. “You save sails for it, you get new sails for it, you bring in the top crew — that’s the one you aim for.”

One important difference between the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and other world-championship regattas is that this event always takes place off Porto Cervo in early September, while the others typically rotate among clubs, continents and calendar dates.

The regatta’s consistent scheduling and location also make it an important social gathering. “It is a bit of a homecoming event,” Westlake said.

While the yachts, the sailors and the racecourses are a significant draw, so too, say veterans, is the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

“The whole show is a level beyond any other event you go to,” Holmberg said. “Y.C.C.S. — they set the mark. They are the standard, the highest that I’ve seen around the world” because of its extraordinary amenities and the professionals it brings in to help run the regatta.

Edoardo Recchi, the club’s secretary general and sports director, called the regatta the club’s signature event. While Recchi was clear that the regatta’s conditions, courses and competition level are its most important attributes, he noted that having a “high level of services and a lot of details is pretty attractive to all the owners,” about 90 percent of whom return each year.

In addition to the racing, the yacht club organizes post-sailing and evening social events. This includes Saturday’s ceremony, where the winners of each class receive Rolex watches.

“Every single owner that enters the [regatta], for sure, is dreaming of being handed a Rolex,” Westlake said. “You never see a bigger smile on an owner’s face [than] when he stands on the podium holding onto that Rolex.”

While there are easier ways of acquiring a Rolex than winning the regatta, none involve seeing one’s name topping the leaderboard outside the yacht club.

“For me, the Maxi is the race to win, full stop,” Recordati said, who has never won a watch, but missed winning his class at the 2011 event by just two points. Of the coastal inshore races, he said, it’s “the one that everybody wants to win.”

What I Learned About Women’s Sailing From Racing the Mediterranean This Summer

By Sinéad O’Sullivan

The Bullitt yacht sailing the Rolex Middle Sea Race.nbsp

It has long been referred to as “the most beautiful race in the world”—and as I watched night turn to day due west of Capo Vaticano, with the sun’s reflection on the Mediterranean sea’s horizon turning the racing yacht Bullitt a flaming orange, I had to agree.

The Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the most prestigious and respected offshore ocean races, on offer to the world’s bravest and most celebrated sailors all the way back to the 1960s. And in October, more than 24 nations were represented in this Mediterranean challenge once more. The course, a grueling 1,200km in distance, begins by cannon fire in Malta’s Grand Harbour, followed by a clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily—including the Aeolian Islands, Egadi, Lampedusa, and Pantelleria—before the yachts finally cross the finish line back at the Port of Valletta, with the current record for completing the route sitting well under 48 hours.

The fight to be first is a thrilling, white-knuckle challenge, and success in offshore ocean racing today is determined by a complex interaction of advanced technology, superior navigation, strategy, crew strength, bravery, and endurance to deal with extreme ocean conditions. After all, there is one variable ensuring that no two races are the same: the weather. (More on that later.)

The starting line of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in Maltas Grand Harbour.nbsp

Measuring 93 feet in length, Bullitt is arguably one of the most beautiful racing yachts to come onto the offshore racing circuit—and the one I was lucky enough to be sailing on. Designed by Wally, a celebrated Italian yacht firm known for sleek and minimalist ultra-luxury—it’s undoubtedly one of the most elegant racers that I’ve seen in any harbor—this one-of-a-kind vessel was custom-built to break speed records.

Like yacht, like owner: Bullitt’s owner Andrea Recordati is equally infatuated with high performance and Italian luxury. The Milan-based businessman and adventurer—although not necessarily in that order—bears a tall frame, a boyish grin, and a timeless style that makes everything he touches resemble a  Loro Piana commercial; the physical embodiment of  la dolce vita. His understated, easygoing leadership shouldn’t be confused with complacency, though. From the moment the yacht left the Maltese shore, Recordati took his competitive spirit out of the board room and onto the high seas for what was the most exciting dogfight during the entire race between Bullitt and our competitor, the 100ft Leopard 3.

The Bullitt yacht in the 2022 race.nbsp

Bullitt’s commitment to the race was proven in our team composition, assembled by Recordati. Within our crew of 23, there were more round-the-world circumnavigations, Volvo Ocean Races, Whitbread Races, and America’s Cup trophies than could be counted on many hands. If ever there was a moment to feel starstruck, it was racing on this yacht with this team; while outside of my previous career as an aerospace engineer, my passion for competitive sailing has seen me take the high seas with plenty of America’s Cup professionals before, it was extraordinary to have so many of the world’s top sailors aboard the same yacht for a single race. I was thankful for that too, as the weather for this year’s race predicted challenging conditions: very light to no wind. (This is, more than nearly anything else, a sailor’s worst nightmare.)

The Rolex Middle Sea is a race of endurance—no more so than during this year’s conditions, with the race becoming as much about mental strength as physical. Shortly after leaving Valletta’s harbor, and split into small teams of five, we fell into our “shifts” of four hours on deck followed by four hours “sleeping”—a term to be used lightly. My rota consisted of one day, and two night, shifts. This meant I was lucky to pass the beautiful and still-smoking volcano of Stromboli during the daylight of my midday shift, and to watch the sky paint itself a fiery orange upon every sunrise—my favorite part of each day.

Sail change around Sicily.

Like any team sport, even the longest, coldest and most challenging shifts became exhilarating simply because of the spirit of those around me. Our youngest, funniest, and hungriest teammate Matty energized us from one shift into the next by critiquing and ranking our onboard freeze-dried meals in incredible detail, as well as sneaking us snacks. Long night watches were sailed in with satellite counting and shooting star spotting under the most beautiful night sky with another teammate, Lucas. Importantly, whether it was day or night, my face was always sore—not from windburn but from laughing. Despite tough conditions and the race being longer than we had anticipated, our spirits showed no signs of dampening. As Lucas reminded us: “Anybody can sail when there is wind. But it takes an extraordinary sailor to sail without wind.”

After a hard-fought start,  Leopard 3 took the lead out of the Valletta Harbour on the first leg towards Sicily. Coming into the Messina Strait—a technical and challenging narrow channel of water dividing Italy and Sicily—we caught up with our competition as dusk fell, playing the kind of thrilling yet elegant game of cat and mouse that only two maxi yachts could; it wasn’t until the next morning that we finally overtook them in daylight.

Bullitt during this years race.

But just beyond Palermo and in the shadow of Mount Etna, we were blindsided when we sailed into a windless hole. As our boat speed dropped to zero knots,  Leopard 3 —having carefully watched the predicament we had succumbed to—sailed to better wind, eventually overtaking us under the high cliffs of San Vito lo Capo. While we attempted to aggressively claw back the distance between the yachts, passing our competitor became ultimately too challenging. From there, we watched them extend slowly away from us, leaving us to cross the finishing line an hour after them, in second place.

But I was here to investigate something else, too: Of the 23 crew, I was the only female aboard Bullitt. As Irish offshore sailor  Pam Lee noted recently, only 5 percent of this year’s Route du Rhum sailors, a solo transatlantic race, are female. “Women need more representation at higher levels if we want girls to grow up believing that they can take on the challenges and adventure, just as much as their male counterparts can,” she told me when we caught up to discuss her recent, record-breaking circumnavigation of Ireland.

There were similarly low numbers at the Rolex Middle Sea Race. One of the most notable female sailors was the Polish Olympic silver medallist  Agnieszka “Aga” Skrzypulec , who I was able to train with prior to our race start in Malta. This race marked her first competitive move from Olympic sailing to offshore racing, aboard an incredibly fast Volvo 70 boat called, appropriately, I Love Poland. “This is a very different type of competitive sailing,” she told me. “But the Olympics has already given me the most important skills I need to win in this sport—mental and physical resilience.”

Agnieszka Skrzypulec on board I Love Poland.

The I Love Poland yacht is a highly competitive training yacht for new Polish ocean sailors, funded by the Polish National Foundation with the goal of creating the next competitive generation of offshore sailors. Yet the route into offshore racing as a career is not clearly defined, and for women, it can feel impossible. The Polish program offers a platform for females like Aga to take what she’s learned in her Olympic career—tactics, navigation, and most of all mental and physical endurance—and apply it to a form of sailing where very few women have been able to “make it.”

This can partly be explained by the fact that, while there are many types of sailing, three dominate. Firstly, there is Olympic fleet sailing around a short course, which sees racers compete in identical boats. The second type, inshore racing, covers a course that can be sailed in one day and has a fleet of mixed boats. Lastly, there is long-distance ocean racing that can often take weeks to complete.

It’s the former that typically has the strongest female representation, for several reasons. For one, the athletes are able to train on the water but live on land, as most racing is done close to the shore. The training for its well-established racing calendar is strictly regimented, with many sailing clubs offering access to official coaches; there’s also a known progression through regional, national, and international competing standards. Most importantly, in Olympic sailing, the women race against other women.

Ocean racing, on the other hand, couldn’t be more different. Athletes spend most of their time at sea, away from their families. There is very little structure or defined trajectory to get into top teams or top races. Sailing clubs typically don’t offer offshore training and there are few, if any, professional coaches. And crucially, female offshore racers are directly competing with men to get onto yachts for multi-week races that require extreme physical endurance, where in certain roles on the ship, it can be difficult—if not downright impossible—to out-compete male counterparts on physical strength.

Still, while I Love Poland may be a few steps ahead of the curve here, gender inclusivity is starting to develop across the sport more broadly. This year, the America’s Cup released a “notice of race” for its first Women’s America’s Cup, and the round-the-world Ocean Race aims to have equal male and female offshore sailors by 2030. Meanwhile, female racing team owners such as the iconic sailors and businesswomen  Wendy Schmidt  and  Dona Bertarelli  are gaining notoriety as they make their mark at the highest levels.

The I Love Poland yacht.

It is pioneering programs like I Love Poland, though, that will begin to foster a new generation of female talent to then feed into these professional and high-profile races. And while there’s still a long way to go, tangible progress is being made for offshore sailing to become a viable career path for women.  Niklas Zennström , the team owner of Rán which came third in its class in Malta, co-founded Skype and is now a renowned venture capitalist in London. “Diversity creates outstanding results, whether with startups or sailing,” he told me over pre-race drinks. “The dynamics in our boat when we have females is different; it’s better.”

As we neared the finish line at Valletta’s Grand Harbour, we were greeted by many speedboats of spectators who had come to lead us home; they were as excited as we were. When we crossed the line, the Rolex team congratulated our elated team. And as soon as we had docked back on shore, celebrations started as we packed up the boat and readied it for the next race. That evening, and after our first shower in days, Recordati took the team for the most amazing 10-course meal in a beautiful location overlooking Valletta’s main square. Over wine and rum, we talked about the race, our tactics, the boats still at sea, and the trajectory of the sailing industry for the next generation of women sailors coming up through the ranks. As the sun set on the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race, I felt optimistic.

Doyle Sails

2023 IMA Maxi Rolex Cup

Doyle-powered teams are making last minute preparations ahead of the pinnacle Grand Prix sailing event of the season, the IMA Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, in the spectacular surroundings of Porto Cervo.

The fleet of internationally acclaimed maxi yachts are due to race from the 3rd to 9th of September for the 33rd edition of the event across a variation of courses ranging from coastal courses through the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago to windward-leeward courses.

Once again, Doyle Sails is proud to be the sailmaker of choice for the majority of the high-performance race yachts that will be on the start line this week, with more than 75 Doyle sails delivered specifically ahead of the event. For Doyle Sails, it is always the busiest event of the year with a significant number of Doyle-powered yachts and Doyle Sails people on the ground including Mike Sanderson, CEO of Doyle Sails International. This year Mike returns to sail with long-time Doyle Sails supporter and friend Hap Fauth onboard his Botin 75 Bella Mente. “It’s wonderful to be sitting on the plane after several years of “testing times” for the world. Even though last year was pretty much back to normal I was forced out due to a very disappointing skiing injury and so super excited to be back with our Bella Mente family for another crack at the big prize of the year for boats like Bella, “ said Mike, who is currently enroute to Porto Cervo. “For Doyle Sails this will be our biggest and most competitive line up of boats throughout the divisions and we look forward to working with our owners and teams over the coming two weeks with their local Doyle experts and their new sails to really maximize each team’s potential”, he continued.

andrea recordati yacht

Finishing the 2022 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in third place, Bella Mente are looking to fight back and claim the top spot this season. The team will also be trialing Doyle Sails’ latest technology in the lead up so it will be all eyes on the 75ft racing machine ahead of the event. “This year we have made some pretty bold changes to the boat with twin rudders, water ballast and lots of smaller developments in hydro and aero world, so really exciting to see how those all play out over the next two weeks,” said Mike.

Farr 100 Leopard 3 will be back in action with Chris Sherlock at the helm. Sherlock, of Doyle Sails Palma, and his team have had worked hard in the lead up to the event with a successful Palma Superyacht Cup result before winning the 2023 Aegean 600. After a major refit this year, the yacht is in fighting form with a new rig, rigging and winch package, along with a new Doyle Sails inventory.

Contention for the title in Maxi Class 1 will be tight as Leopard will be lining up against fellow Doyle-powered maxi’s Deep Blue, Galateia and Bullitt. Luke Molloy, also of Doyle Sails Palma, is sailing onboard long time customer Andrea Recordati’s Wally 93 Bullitt, who, after finishing 3 rd  at the 2022 event will be looking to climb up the podium.

andrea recordati yacht

David M. Leuschen’s WallyCento Galateia will once again line up alongside other maxi’s in Maxi Class 1 after a successful start to the season winning the 2023 Palma Vela regatta. Daniel Fong, professional sailor and Grand Prix sail designer for Doyle Sails, will be onboard this year supporting the team as a sailor, but also as the sail designer behind the new high-performance Stratis J1 and full suite of downwind flying sails that has recently been delivered to Galateia.

With 10 new Doyle Stratis sails onboard for the event, it will be Dario Ferrari’s Botin 72 Cannonball, looking to continue their run of successful results in what is arguably the most intense division of the event, with eight yachts in Maxi Class 2. Doyle Grand Prix Sail Designer and professional sailor Jordi Calafat is onboard as tactician.

David Duff of Doyle Sails International will sail with Wendy Schimdt and their tight knit crew on the Botin 85 Deep Blue and Doyle Sails Italy will support Manticore, Franz Wilhem Baruffaldi Preis’s Mylius 60 fd, which will line up in the Maxi Class 4, the largest division for the regatta.

Recently launched Cafe Racer Open Season, owned by Thomas Bscher, will be making her long awaited debut in the racing scene after spending the inital part of the summer in Palma. Open Season will showcase her brand new race inventory of Doyle Structured Luff headsails, Cableless Code Zero and staysails this week. Senior project manager and sailmaker Antoine Thullier, is onboard with the race team this week. The project has been led by Luke Molloy who has been an integral player from design phase through to commissioning – recently spending time with the yacht to complete the sea trials last week and a training block with race team ahead of their first racing event. The 68fter has spent the earlier part of the summer cruising, designed to  sail without backstays in cruising mode allowing the owner to sail simply and safely with minimal crew.

George Sakellaris’s maxi yacht Proteus returns for another year and will be looking for redemption, last year they were the winners of the Maxi European Inshore series, and posted a second overall at the Maxi European event. While luck wasn’t on their side at the Aegean 600 in July with a rigging issue pre-start, the yacht is back in mint condition ahead of the event with Richard Bouzaid onboard as primary trimmer.

The highly anticipated 101 Y3K, the latest launch from Italian yard Wally test yacht out of the Italian Wally yard will also be making her racing debut this week, having recently completed a successful round of sea trials in Italy where a full suite of Doyle Structured Luff sails were fitted alongside Mainsails, Cableless Code sails and downwind flying sails.

With Doyle Sails now firmly the sailmaker of choice to the world’s most high-performance race yachts, events like the 2023 Maxi Rolex Cup are a true testament to the by sailors, for sailors ethos which sees Doyle Sails home to not only the best sailmakers in the world, but the best sailors.

Hanuman’s crew looks for the mark while heading upwind near Necker Island

Finding a place to dock at Virgin Gorda’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) on March 14th -17th was not easy. That’s because 26 superyachts and megayachts—most of them more than 100ft long—were tied up for the second annual Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous.

One of the smaller boats, Andrea Recordati’s Indio , took first place with two wins and a second-place finish over the three days of racing around Virgin Gorda. The Wally 101 was also the division winner in the 2011 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo.

“It was a lot of hard work … the competition was very tough,” Recordati said after the award ceremony. “I have a very good crew and I have been sailing with them for a long time. All these guys are very professional. They know how to have fun and this is why they are my crew, but they are all super pros. They all come from the Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup and all the major circuits. When they are on the boat, they have to be professional.”

According to the rating system, Indio was considered to be the ‘fastest boat’ and had to start at the back of the fleet, Recordati noted.

Peter Isler, two-time America’s Cup winner, was at the helm of Hanuman . The 138ft yacht was last year’s winner, but had to settle for second place this time.

It was the first time that Isler had raced a ‘huge superyacht’ in the Virgin Islands.

“Apparently the competition has gotten a lot deeper this year, but the boat kept up its tradition of doing very well, he said.”

Three races were held over three days with 13 superyachts competing for this year’s title. Sailors raced around Virgin Gorda on the first two days and on the last day the course included Necker Island and The Dogs.

When the owner of P2 , Gerhard Andlinger, dedicated his third place win and trophy to his wife Jeanne, tears welled up in his eyes.

“I thought it was so gallant and so warm. Whenever that sense of gratitude overwhelms him, he gets teary-eyed. I was really touched,” Mrs. Andlinger said. Aside from the win, the Irish descendent was celebrating her birthday, coincidentally on St. Patrick’s Day, on the day of the award ceremony.  “I wasn’t expecting it, but as soon as he said St. Patrick’s Day, I knew he was dedicating it to me.”

Peter Holmberg, USVI Olympic silver medalist, was at the helm of P2 . He said he was proud to see an event of this caliber being hosted in his ‘home town’. “This is an opportunity for the VI to shine and I think we put on one of our best faces. As far as being on these yachts, it is a real challenge for us because they are huge boats. But we make it competitive and the owners love it.”

Holmberg said he believes a superyacht regatta could have been hosted in the VI prior to YCCS, but the club has helped pave the way and set the standard.

During last year’s event the YCCS clubhouse was still under construction, but this year it was fully operational. “It really made things a lot easier,” said Boat International Media Events Executive Alexis Davis, whose team of about 16 members organized the event.

Off the water, sailors were treated to nightly entertainment at YCCS and a ‘Glow Party’ at Oil Nut Bay Beach Club, which was attended by about 300 people both from the community and sailors.

Bullitt Strikes Unexpected Target

Press Release

26 October, 2023

The 2023 Rolex Middle Sea Race record will show that Andrea Recordati’s Wally 93 Bullitt put in a phenomenal performance around the 606nm racetrack, taking the fight to monohull line honours winner Leopard 3 on the water, while staving off a concerted fleet-wide challenge on corrected time. As one of five maxis over 24 metres (80 feet) in length, in the 10 boat IRC 1 class, Bullitt was expected to have its hands full, as it fought to be first to finish at the same time as aspiring to a class win. The eventual, ultimately unsuccessful, elapsed time duel with Leopard may well be one of several reasons behind the Italian maxi’s overall win on time correction. The historical facts are only half the story.

The Little Engine That Could  is an American folktale used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work. If ever there was a yacht that matched the tenet of that story, it would be Red Ruby sailed double-handed by the wife and husband team of Christina and Justin Wolfe from the United States. The Sun Fast 3300 came close to one of the biggest ever upsets in offshore yachting at the 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race. At first light on Thursday morning (25 October), Red Ruby appeared stuck in orbit of Lampedusa, 110 nautical miles from the finish. From what looked, onshore at least, a wholly unpromising position, determination, belief and skill drove the American boat to within 24 seconds of a sensational overall win on time correction.

The situation was well and truly in the balance for a prolonged period of nail-biting tension for most of yesterday. When the Race Director finally telephoned at 9 p.m. to confirm Bullitt as the winner of the 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, Recordati could hardly believe it. “When I came into the Rolex Middle Sea Race my dream was to win class,” he said. “That would have been a fantastic result against boats more adapted to this type of offshore race. Coming first overall in corrected time, honestly … I am ecstatic, almost speechless. I am super happy for the boat, she deserves it. I am especially happy for my crew. I have an exceptional team and they really deserve this too.”

Recordati enjoyed the early boat for boat rivalry with Leopard, even if he lost out in the end: “The duel was like déjà vu from last year. If they had got stuck with the others in Messina, we might have got them on the water. They just managed to pull through and did a fabulous race, so it’s good for them. I never came into this race thinking we would have a chance to do line honours and it is nice to be second in elapsed time.

Bullitt’s tactician, Joca Signorini, added: “We worked really hard. We took all our opportunities, and we looked after our boat. The crew did a fantastic job keeping everything together. It takes a lot to put this group together and, in the end, we are very satisfied with the result.”

Bullitt’s 20 person crew was a who’s who from the America’s Cup, round the world racing and maxi yacht scene: Andrea Recordati, Bozidar Matkovic, Guillermo Altadill, Joca Signorini, Luigi Filippo Orsi Magngelli Alvera, Luke Molloy, Maciej Malag, Marc Lagesse, Martin Strömberg, Mate Ivic, Matthew Joubert, Michael Pammenter, Miguel Jauregui, Peter Van Niekierk, Phil Jameson, Richard Bouzaid, Richard Fryer, Tai Vinnie, and Vinicio Vanossi.

Navigator Marc Lagesse offered a run through of the key moments on the course. “Before the race, in consultation with our weather router Marcel Van Triest, our early strategy was to get north as quickly as possible. When the breeze built to over 20 knots with a big sea state, we loosely abandoned our strategy of getting north and looked for flat water and less wind to preserve the boat. This decision worked because when we got into the Strait of Messina we were ahead.”

“We hugged the mainland coast of Italy to get out of the current. During the passage we crossed in front and behind Leopard, it was so close. Half way up the strait, Lucky was in front of us. It looked as though they tacked into the current and they lost out, so we hitched back into the beach. Both us and Leopard went all the way in; you could have thrown a tennis ball to the beach and at one point we even had a knot of counter current.”

“At the Villa San Giovanni ferry terminal, we made the decision to swap over to the Sicilian side as the current was two knots less. We popped out of Messina in first place, which was surprising. Lucky was still stuck in the current and we put four miles on them. Leopard just got through about a mile and a half behind us.”

“Leopard got some land breeze and rolled us, but we got them back as we picked up the wind again, and we were neck and neck all the way to Stromboli, where Leopard crossed our bow by just a boat length.”

“After Stromboli our strategy was to go on the wind. We expected it to ease and then come through from the south. So going north meant that when that happened, we could still lay Palermo and not get stuck in there. Leopard was covering us from the front on every tack, which I always take as a compliment. At one point, we did tack against the shift as an insurance policy and went north to cover Lucky and Pyewacket. In the main, though, we kept to our strategy of staying on the wind. It worked.”

“After passing Palermo we were expecting to park up, but the southerly connected quickly so there was not much of a slowdown in boat speed. However, by then we were losing to Leopard because that was their favourable angle. The sea state after Favignana got up, but as we were slightly cracked off the breeze it wasn’t too bad; nothing like the first night.”

“The leg to Pantelleria was straight forward, with no surprises but some geographical shifts around the island so we took a few hitches in there. Leopard was by then about eight miles ahead of us, but we knew we were in the game on corrected time. Approaching Lampedusa, we knew were going to be lifted, which would make it difficult to lay, so we put in a couple of security hitches. At Lampedusa we were 20 miles behind Leopard, but had them on corrected, so our strategy was just to put all the crew on the rail and send it.”

“Comparisons to last year’s race against Leopard are difficult, because Leopard is a very different boat this year. For sure, we sailed better, Bullitt has a great crew and they kept the performance solid. For us the goal was to have a good race, so a class win would have been great. The overall win is the cherry on the top. I think it’s full marks for Bullitt.”

Charles Dickens opens A Tale of Two Cities with: “ It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity.”  Leaving aside the foolishness, in this tale of two boats else features well. Both boats showed belief and skill, both boats enjoyed a range of emotions, and for the watchers onshore there was plenty of amazement at what was going on at sea.

The Wolfes reside in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. “We have been racing double-handed together for 28 years,”  explains Christina. “We actually met to do a local double-handed race in 1995 and we’ve been together ever since!”  The success of the partnership is based on having similar strengths allowing the pair to switch roles frequently while racing with no concerns. “We very much prefer double-handed racing because of the challenge. Plus, we enjoy sailing with each other,” she continued. “To be successful it is important to know your teammate’s abilities and trust them.”

The pair clearly have an extraordinary relationship on both land and water. “One of the things we can do, because we have been sailing together so long, is make decisions really quickly,’ they explain. “There is no board meeting to decide if we are going to tack or gybe. We both see the same information, we both come to the same conclusion because, essentially, we have developed as sailors together.” It shows.

Turning to the race, it was not clearcut that Red Ruby would be contesting honours in class let alone overall. “So much happened in that race,” the pair continue. “You are constantly changing, the conditions change, the course changes, you are constantly going by something that you have to be careful about, it is just non-stop. We went hours and hours and hours at a time without any rest at all, because there was too much going on.”

From the get-go, Red Ruby was up against it, but never once gave up. At the start, the wind changed direction and then disappeared, leaving their start stuck on the line and forcing the Race Committee to postpone the next start. In the mêlée that followed, Red Ruby’s headsail pre-feeder jammed. An issue that took most of the leg to Messina to resolve. Little by little they got themselves into a groove, and realised they were in the game.

“We try hard and do not do anything by half. We came here to race a great race and put everything out there. We knew from the middle of the first day that we were going well. We are proud about what we did. This is known for being a really tough race and we had conditions that none of the weather models predicted.”

“We made some great navigational calls; we made a lot of miles one night at the western end of Sicily staying off the shoreline and away from a wind hole. That move got us to a point where we could make the distance on our opposition. Things like that over the course of long race add up, sometimes it is metres but sometimes they turn into miles.”

andrea recordati yacht

While the weather models between Lampedusa and Malta suggested Red Ruby had no hope to beat Bullitt, the Wolfes were untroubled. They had wind. They had belief. They had hope. And, in any event, none of the models had got the forecast completely right all race.

However, it really was not until they were approaching Malta that the Red Ruby team  appreciated that they were within touching distance of victory.

“When we got within cell phone reception west of Malta, we knew it was going to be super close. We were ripping, so there really wasn’t anything else to do. We were already at maximum. What we didn’t know was what was going to happen once we came through the South Comino Channel and turned. Was it going to get light, was it going to be windier, would we be able to fly a spinnaker? Frankly, we had hours to think about it, what would we do, how would we do it.”

The problems seem never-ending and exhausting. Even the final dash to the finish was pressured. “We could not see the fairway buoy. We knew where it was on the chart, but we still nearly ran into it. Then we had a ferry coming in at 30 knots that we had to avoid.”

In the end, Red Ruby fell agonisingly short. “Over the course of a 600 mile race how many places did you leave 24 seconds. All over the place. One better tack, one better call on the current in the Messina Strait. We don’t even know what happened on the west coast of Stromboli. Even the start did not go so well. How many thousands of seconds did it take us to cross the line?”

Impressively, the pair were able to see the result with some perspective. “The Rolex Middle Sea Race was on our bucket list. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be here. It is like nothing we have ever done before and has certainly lived up to the hype and surpassed our hope. The challenge of the race and the beauty of the race is definitely unique. It is not like just going out and sailing a race, it has its own aspects that are appealing, and it has to be one of the best in the world.”

Red Ruby’s adventure has given the boat a firm place in the pantheon of legends surrounding the Rolex Middle Sea Race. If the Wolfes need encouragement to repeat the journey, there is a lesson from history that might help. In the 2015 race, Mascalzone Latino lost out by nine seconds in the contest for the Rolex Middle Sea Race trophy. The following year, 2016, the Italian yacht returned and won.

David vs Goliath in Middle Sea Race

Published on October 26th, 2023 by Editor -->

Andrea Recordati’s Wally 93 Bullitt (ITA) claimed class and overall victory in the 2023 Rolex Middle Sea Race. The 44th edition of the 606 nm course around Sicily had 110 yachts representing 26 nations start on October 21 from Malta, with Bullitt finishing in 02d 14:39:14.

Bullitt finished behind the Farr 30m Leopard (MON) which claimed monohull line honors, while they narrowly nipped for overall honors the wife and husband team of Christina and Justin Wolfe that double-handed their Sun Fast 3300 Red Ruby (USA).

The Sun Fast 3300 came close to one of the biggest ever upsets in offshore yachting as by first light on October 25, Red Ruby appeared stuck in orbit of Lampedusa, 110 nautical miles from the finish. The Ferretti Group, one of the world top companies specializing in the design, building and sale of motor yachts, with an amazing portfolio of eight of the most exclusive and prominent brands, is thrilled to announce its participation in the Moscow Boat Show 2013. From 12 to 17 March, two of the Group fleet’s most successful yachts will be presented as absolute premieres for the Russian market: motor yacht Ferretti 530, representing Ferretti Yachts , and the 27-foot Iseo superyacht tender by Riva .

Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show

Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show

This year’s Moscow Boat Show will also offer the Ferretti Group the opportunity to announce all yachting enthusiasts in Russia and Northern Eurasia a new important achievement in its international growth: the renewal of its exclusive dealership agreement for the Russian Federation with its partner Premium Yachts , one of the leading dealers operating in the boating sector in Russia , which will represent the Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Itama , Bertram , Riva e Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line brands.

The agreement – which was officially announced today during a press conference attended, among others, by Ferruccio Rossi (Ferretti Group’s CEO), Alexey Kurochkin (Premium Yachts’s President), and Stefano Campanelli (Sales Manager for the EMEA area for Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line) – is part of Ferretti Group’s strategy for a further expansion on the European markets offering the best short/medium-term growth perspectives, also thanks to the financial soundness regained following the strategic partnership forged with the Weichai Group.

More specifically, the Russian boating market holds a great potential for the Ferretti Group’s development because of the rapid growth of average wealth among the population and an increasing interest for Made in Italy luxury goods, like Ferretti Group yachts.

Through the renewal of the agreement with Premium Yachts, the Group will further strengthen its highly selected distribution network – which currently includes approximately 60 dealers ensuring the best possible customer care in more than 80 countries worldwide – as well as its presence in the traditional EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa ) area, one of the three macro-regions (besides the America and the Asia-Pacific) into which the Group’s sales structure is divided.

Moreover, in a medium/long-term perspective, the Ferretti Group is expecting an increasing interest on the Russian market not only for flying bridge yachts above 70’ in length, but also towards smaller crafts, both flybridge and open/coupé ones, which are particularly suitable for river cruising or pleasure boating in Russia’s large lakes. Consequently, the renewal of the dealership agreement with Premium Yachts also allows to look ahead at the future aiming to conquer new market segments where less competitors are currently present in terms of both products and geographic location.

The press conference, which was held today at the Lotte Hotel in Moscow, had also the objective of introducing attending journalists and yachting enthusiasts to the main new products launched by the Ferretti Group over the last few months, namely: motor yacht Ferretti 870 , Ferretti 690 yacht , and the project of the new flagship Ferretti 960 superyacht for the Ferretti Yachts brand; luxury yacht Pershing 82 ’ and superyacht Pershing 108’ New Edition for Pershing; Riva 63’ Virtus and the project of the new Riva flagship, 122’ Mythos yacht , as well as the entire range of the Itama, Bertram and Mochi Craft brands.

The yachts launched over the last few months by CRN – the Group’s brand specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium yachts between 40 and 90 metres – were also presented during the conference: the two superyachts: CRN superyacht Jade (60 metres long) and CRN mega yacht Chopi Chopi (80 metres long), the latter being one of the largest pleasure vessels ever built in Italy and the largest one ever built by the Ancona-based shipyard.

“The renewal of our dealership agreement with an important partner like Premium Yachts – which has worked on the Russian market for almost 10 years and can boast an outstanding product knowledge and an excellent local market penetration – and the presentation of the Group’s latest models are an integral part of our development strategy on the EMEA markets offering the best growth perspectives in the short-medium term,” stated Ferruccio Rossi, Ferretti Group’s CEO. “The Moscow Boat Show 2013, which has now reached its sixth edition, will extend over approximately 45,000 square metres this year and will be attended by more than 350 international boating companies. This Show represents an interesting business opportunity for us and an unmissable event in terms of visibility, since we are identifying a considerable growth potential in this area thanks to the timeless attractiveness of our products – true ambassadors of Made in Italy production all over the world”.

pershing 115 yacht

yachting/images/magazine/2005/122005/fea_pershing_525x350.jpg

It takes something very special to impress the jilted residents of the exclusive French town of St. Tropez. Years ago we brought this depot for the rich and famous to a standstill arriving with Virgin Atlantic Challenger II, but we had just set a record across the Atlantic. Sprinting into the port with the striking new, 40-knot Pershing 115 did not quite have the same impact, but this beautiful yacht did stop onlookers in their tracks as they stood and stared.

With the 115, Pershing joins a select band of boatbuilders who are going over the 100-foot mark, taking a quantum leap from the 88-foot former flagship design. This yacht has twice the volume of anything Pershing has ever built. Moreover I was on the first hull and for a prototype design they have done a really superb job of meeting their design and perfomance goals.

Pershing boss Till Antonelli is justifiably proud of the 115. “We knew there was a market out there for a larger Pershing and I think we took a bold step in making the jump straight from 88 to 115 feet. The result is there for all to see and it is a tribute to our new factory and the people who work there, Antonelli says.

The power behind this monster is a pair of 16 cylinder MTU diesels from the 4000 range that produce 3,700 hp each. These engines are huge and they seem to stretch forever along the engine compartment. They are coupled to ZF gearboxes and then the drive goes to KaMeWa water jets in what proved to be a very smooth power train. The water jets are unique in that the inlet ducts of the jets are an integral part of the hull molding which gives a better water flow to the impellers and improves their efficiency.

The two diesels have ample space between them and you see the reason for this when you look aft and see the molding in place for a third water jet. This gives the option to install a centerline TF50 gas turbine to bring the total power up to 13,000 hp. Now you are talking real excitement, and this installation is planned for the next unit that is already under construction. Look for speeds of over 55 knots from this second yacht, speeds that are squarely situated in the Pershing performance territory.

Access to the engine compartment is via a door in the cockpit which leads first to an auxiliary room with the switchboard, watermaker and air conditioning. Forward of this are the crew’s quarters and galley. Stairs lead up from the galley directly into the saloon, close by the dining table, and there is also a dumbwaiter for larger trays. The galley is fitted with all you need for sophisticated meal preparation and the styling, even in these working areas of the yacht, is a close match to the stunning guest areas.

Back aft, the swim platform that protects the water jets is bigger than the average sportsboat. Stairs lead up on both sides to the cockpit, and between them is the garage for the Zodiac tender together with its launching crane. You don’t need to skimp on the water toys on this yacht because there is a second garage that is revealed by raising part of the forward coach roof, housing two jet skis with another launching crane.

The 115 is full of more surprises and one of them comes from opening the door on the right of the saloon entrance. Here there is a stairway winding up to a very private sun deck sitting above the pilothouse. I was trying to determine why there was no sunroof on this yacht similar to those found on other Pershings-this sun deck was the reason. There is another, more public sunpad in the cockpit together with settees and a table, but the upper area is going to be everybody’s favorite.

The sliding saloon doors make an impressive entrance and walking into the saloon takes your breath away. There is none of the rich wood panelling so often found on superyachts, but here the designers have created a beautiful and light, almost minimalistic area with only the dining chairs and the blue leather locker fronts providing color. The settees are white leather, the woodwork a very pale gray-tinted ash, and the sides and overhead a very pale cream.

Quality is enhanced by integral modern artwork above the entrance door and on two of the side window pillars. The relaxing lounge area is aft and a dining table for 10 is forward in a open plan arrangement. Forward at the helm there are three imposing adjustable seats that create what looks like an altar to high performance.

The captain sits in the center chair, which is flanked by the engine and jet controls fitted into the armrests. Here he is master of all he surveys and he really can play tunes with the sensitive machinery controls. In front of him there are seven screens that provide all the information needed for high speed navigation and control, plus sophisticated monitoring systems. The latter have been specially developed by Pershing to control and monitor everything on board except the main engines. The engines have their own MTU dedicated displays and there is a separate display for monitoring the water jet. Large Simrad radar and chart displays provide a full picture of the navigation scene.

A couple of steps down from saloon level takes you into what is virtually a private cinema. Wide lounging settees and chairs face a big flat screen that can be fed from video, DVD or cable or satellite TV. This will be a popular evening relaxing area. Another stairway takes you to the staterooms where the layout is about the only conventional thing on this yacht: a master, a VIP and two twin cabins.

These are all decorated in a similar minimalistic style but with strong colors added through the leather bed bases, the mirror trims and the bright silk bed covers. The result is both modern and restful, with the spacious master stateroom occupying the full beam and featuring an angled bed and deep side windows to give natural light. The VIP stateroom in the bow is almost semi-circular in shape and large enough to have its own settee.

The heads have the same pale gray wood and modern fittings, including hemispherical glass basins. The soles here are wood but have metal strip inserts to give good grip when wet. The extravagant quality of the master stateroom can be seen in the fitting of his-and-her heads for the use of the owners.

The interior of this yacht may be stunning but it is the exterior styling that really sets the scene. The hull has the navy blue and silver combination that was pioneered by Pershing and has since been copied by many. This color scheme complements the series of rising curves that forms the superstructure and, like so much about this design, everything looks well integrated. The practical aspects of the design have been well thought out in most areas, but you only really appreciate the true quality of this yacht out on the water at speed.

We ran the 115 from Cannes to St.Tropez, which is a well-worn path for fast motoryachts. You appreciate one of the qualities of water jet drive with the very delicate maneuvering that is possible with this big yacht. Despite her size you can inch her forward or sideways delicately close to the dock, yet she will spin like a top when you need a quick response. It takes some skill and familiarity with the controls to get to this level of control but the effort is well worthwhile.

Out at sea the response is immediate and thrilling. The thrust from the jets powers the yacht onto plane and keeps it accelerating right up to its terminal velocity. The lack of vibration is impressive, and steering control is delicate and precise when you switch from the steerable joystick controls to the wheel steering. For trim adjustment, the 115 uses the latest interceptor system rather than trim tabs and these give an immediate response that reduces the adjustment period.

On our run down to St.Tropez we had a race with the TGV high-speed train along the coast. The train won that one, but there was no doubt we were fastest on the water that day. Pershing has found just the right balance in this yacht. This design has all the style you want to impress others, both inside and out, yet this is combined with very comfortable living on board. As for performance, 40 knots will meet most requirements but if you want to outrun everything on the water then you can always invest in the gas turbine option. Then maybe, you might even beat that train.
