NORDHAVN 96

Nordhavn 96.

96 foot yacht

She is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, and incorporates a 10-foot cockpit extension that allows for space bumps in several areas of the boat including below decks in the crew area and lazarette; at main deck level in the cockpit and saloon; on the pilothouse deck with a larger sky lounge or upper master stateroom (depending on layout); and an even more capacious fly bridge. Fuel capacity remains the same, although slight gains in fuel burn are likely due to the N96’s longer water line. Displacement also stays virtually the same. “It is a fairly easy procedure to extend the molds,” says Jeff Leishman, PAE’s Chief of Design. And it is an efficient way to give a customer the additional space they are seeking without the drastic cost of building an entirely new hull. Nordhavn has employed this method of thinking with several of its other models including the N52 (based on the N47 hull), the N60 and 63 (based on the N55 hull), the N68 (based on the N64 hull) and the N76 (based on the N72 hull), and the approach has been a hugely successful one. The stretched out models proved themselves to be so advantageous that, as a result, they have become more popular than their predecessors. And contrary to published reports, there is zero downside to adding hull extensions. Says Leishman: “These types of modifications have actually demonstrated to enhance performance.”

Imagine having access to the luxuries of a 100-foot boat at a smaller boat investment. With the Nordhavn 96 it’s possible: using the already enormous N86 hull as a jumping off point, the amplified superstructure of the 96 ups the ante in interior volume with accommodations that are nothing short of remarkable. The saloon and galley measures 43 feet in length and the combination of wheelhouse, captain’s cabin and sky lounge measure almost 34 feet in length. She includes a vast, full-width owner’s suite in addition to the captain’s cabin, three guest staterooms with ensuite heads, plus the spacious crew wing which comprises a roomy cabin and head aft with exterior entrance. A laundry and utility room are also provided. The luxurious and functional interior is finished with fine hardwoods, beautiful moldings and raised panels combined with stone floors, granite countertops, the finest hardware, lighting and fixtures. Like the N86, the interior of the Nordhavn 96 is customizeable to the owner’s personal vision.

Driving the hull are twin MTU Series 60 engines rated at 600 hp each spinning 48-inch propellers through 4.59 to 1 reduction gears allow a transatlantic cruising speed of 10 knots. With over 7,000 gallons of fuel aboard and throttled back to the 9 knot range, this new design can run roughly 4,000 miles before refueling. The twin configuration includes integral skegs and two large attached rudders for maximum directional control and propellers that are protected within their own apertures. The advanced high-pressure, common rail, electronically injected engines are fitted with wet exhaust, commercial rated transmissions with large reduction gears and offer efficiency and reliability never before possible.

An extensive list of standard machinery details includes central hydraulics with 20-square-foot stabilizers, 50 hp bow and stern thrusters, hydraulic bilge pumping and anchor wash downs, dual Onan generators, a universal AC electrical system for worldwide use, 3,500 lb. Marquipt davit, chilled water air-conditioning system, 2000 gallons-per-day water maker, automatic engine room and lazarette fire system with ventilation dampeners, an on-deck Jacuzzi and much more.

The Nordhavn 96 truly is the ideal boat for the yachtsman looking to step up his game. For one busy N86 owner looking to move up, it was the layout and roomy, separated crew quarters of the N96 – ideal for his full-time four-person crew – that cinched the deal over other similar-sized boats. The Nordhavn 96 gave him the bigger boat he needed and the brand he trusted.

MCY 96 Pure ocean pleasure

At 30 meters, the MCY 96 takes the second spot on the Monte Carlo Yacht’s size podium. The MCY 96 has been designed and developed for extended ocean voyages according to both Pleasure and Charter Yacht Rules, and may be also registered as a CE–A craft.

OVERVIEW

INTERIOR DESIGN

Upon boarding, an instant sense of spaciousness becomes apparent. The new MCY 96 makes the most of the layout concepts currently found on larger models in its class: incredible volumes are obtained positioning the master cabin forward on the main deck, and as many as four guest cabins, all equally sized, located on the lower deck.

TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN

MCY 96 was designed with special attention to safety during long crossings. New design and technical highlights include bulwarks that are sensibly higher than the current fashion and the wide overhanging side deck that gives good coverage from the natural elements.

From the beginning, Nordhavn has taken the approach that full-displacement designs cruising at or below hull speed are the safest, most comfortable types of powerboats for long range cruising. And while Nordhavns are built to cross oceans, their seakeeping ability and rugged construction are equally beneficial for everyday coastal cruising. Better yet, their fuel-efficient designs are proving to be the most sensible and financially feasible ways to go cruising with today’s soaring fuel prices.

PRICE ON APPLICATION

The EXTRA X96 TRIPLEX is a perfect example of a alfresco living, global cruising, combining spaces with performance, value and design features not found from other brands.

The X96 is what we call a Triple Bridge Yacht as she is comprised of 3 decks in a sub 100ft model where we can sleep 10 guests in 5 spacious cabins plus 5 crew in 3 cabins.

An impressive 2,000nm range allows her to accomplish extensive cruising yet remain in a very manageable size range which we have found appeals to a large demographic of buyers. The younger generation loves the styling, exterior deck spaces and use of glass in the superstructure combining interior & exterior spaces into one. The experienced owner loves the flexibility of the vessel - it allows you to sleep a large number of guests yet 5 crew assures a high level of service & the size assures you can dock in almost every marina in either the Mediterranean, Bahamas or Caribbean.

For propulsion the X96 TRIPLEX features triple Volvo IPS 1350 (also available in triple 1,000hp traditional propulsion package) giving her a top speed of 17.5 knots and a cruise speed of 12 knots which is where you accomplish that 2,000nm range.

Each X96 is customized for the individual client including the decor & deck spaces. You have a massive on deck master en-suite, 4 cabins down below and a upper deck that can really be turned into something cool and unique. It can be a traditional sky lounge, or formal dining or a combination of both where we have had a client do a smaller second galley that opens to a lounge. Open the aft doors and the exterior & interior combine into one. Compliment these spaces with a flybridge and you have an impressive package all under 100ft.

EXTRA Yachts continues to impressive and is destined to gain in popularity as it enters into the American markets. Expect to see more from this brand as it grows its market presence with forward thinking designs, capable yachts, all finished with a styling one would expect from an Italian shipyard.

+ Extra Yachts: A New Cruise Concept

The eye-catching design of the profile expresses its marked personality, immediately standing out for its uniqueness.

A refined play of contrasts between the clean and soft white surfaces of fiberglass or aluminum and the elegant dark windows. Exceptional volumes, comfort of a villa on the sea, low consumption, long range and layouts that facilitate direct contact with the sea: these are the distinctive elements of Extra Yachts.

+ Extra X96 Triplex

Three levels of extraordinary comfort. Extra TRIPLEX range stems from the desire to guarantee large indoor and outdoor areas without compromising the contact with the sea, reduced consumption and unique design.

Among the main objectives of Extra x96 TRIPLEX there is to further raise the standards for yachts below the 100-foot length, especially in terms of usable space, comfort, livability on board and reduced consumption.

Made of composite, in compliance with RINA standards and CE certifications, this yacht has impressive volumes and unmistakable features.

The exterior design, by Francesco Guida, features a unique personality with unusual lines, impressive volumes, an innovative concept of use. The Extra X96 TRIPLEX has been conceived to meet the needs of anyone keen on entering the yachting world, enjoying full contact with nature and in a spirit of full conviviality with guests and family.

The fly deck, featuring two areas dedicated to sunbathing and one furnished as living, offers the privileged advantage to fully enjoy cruising in total comfort and privacy even on the top deck. Penned by Hot Lab, the interiors are chic and contemporary. Materials, textures and colors have been studied in detail. The design is clean, simple yet refined.

Beautifully illuminated by floor-to-ceiling windows, all the spaces are bright and exquisitely connected to the outdoor areas. The upper deck is laid out as a large open-air living area thanks to the retractable windows able to create a single large space, in full contact with the sea. It has been furnished with a 12-seater dining table by Minotti.

On the main deck, the large living room with spectacular C-shaped sofa by Minotti and occasional armchairs is the ideal place to relax and socialize. Thanks to a maximum beam on 7.5 meters, the master cabin located on the main deck forward is the widest in the category of boats under 30 meters. Its design creates elegant and stylish feel using soft luxurious yet sober nuances.

Below deck, there are four guest cabins: two VIP cabins with double bed and two cabins with single beds, all with en-suite bathroom. No compromise on usable space: the area dedicated to guest cabins measures 56 square meters. Precious wood and leather, together with lacquered panels, create a pleasant play of contrasts on the surfaces. The highly technological helm station equipped with all the latest navigational instruments, gives excellent visibility and total control.

The Extra X96 TRIPLEX semi-displacement propulsion system can rely on three powerful Volvo Penta IPS engines of 1000 horse power each capable of pushing it up to a maximum speed of 17.5 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots, with a range of 2000 nautical miles at 10 knots.

Extra Yachts X115 Triplex

Extra Yachts is known for making vessels that are, well, a little extra. Its latest model is no exception.

The new 96-footer, known as the X115 Triplex , offers innovative modular spaces indoors and out that give seafarers a little extra room on board.

For the unversed, Extra Yachts is a brand of Palumbo Superyachts that Francesco Guida recently developed. As its moniker implies, the newcomer is part of the Triplex line of spacious tri-deck vessels that lie at the intersection of performance and luxury.

The semi-displacement yacht features a sleek, sporty exterior conceived by Guida and will be forged from a mix of GRP and carbon fiber. The interior, meanwhile, was penned by Milanese studio Hot Lab and is characterized by “soft, embracing shapes” and natural materials, according to the yard.

The main deck sports two foldable balconies for extra space.  Extra Yachts

The layout can be configured with either five or six cabins. As standard, there is a full-beam owner’s suite on the main deck, which comes complete with an ensuite, wardrobe, vanity, office and a private balcony. Below deck, there are a further two VIP suites and two guest cabins.

One highlight of the yacht is the cockpit on the main deck. It sports two foldable balconies that expand to offer more than 800 square feet of extra space. All up, the area offers three sofas, a sundeck and views of the hydraulic swim platform below.

The bow is fitted with a jacuzzi and sun pads.  Extra Yachts

Elsewhere, the bow is fitted with two large sun pads and a Jacuzzi, while the lower deck starboard side is equipped with a garage for a 15-foot tender. There is ample room for alfresco dining, as well, with a 10-seat table located on the main deck and upper deck, respectively.

As you might expect, the X115 Triple packs plenty of grunt, too. She is fitted with three gutsy Volvo Penta IPS engines that can churn out 1,000 hp each. This gives the vessel a max speed of 17.5 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Extra, indeed.

The Southern Wind 96 is one of the latest additions to the SWS family. This composite yacht’s sleek hull lines designed by Farr Yacht Design and general concept drawn by Nauta Design express the company motto: “simplicity is the essence of good design”.

The project’s lightship displacement of 58,500kg grants excellent light wind speed with a manageable rig size. The hull has full waterlines and straight end diagonals, a wide, low transom and full forward sections. The deck hardware is optimized for both shorthand performance cruising and offshore racing. The Southern Wind 96 benefits from cutting-edge design and superb styling, which makes her a formidable opponent in any regatta. The SW96#01 Sorceress was custom-made for an owner who wanted a larger performance yacht to use in both transoceanic races and blue water cruises.

Southern Wind 96 composite yachts feature award-winning interiors, as in the case of SW96#02 Seatius. This yacht’s interior was designed by Nauta Design in collaboration with interior designer Jeroen Machielsen from Studio Hermanides and won the Best Interior Design Sailing Yachts award at the prestigious 2019 Boat International Design and Innovation Awards. The Nordhavn 96 is a Passport to Adventure

  • By Kim Kavin
  • October 21, 2022

Nordhavn 96

Bob Giles had a goal. Whereas most yachtsmen who head to French Polynesia aim for Tahiti or Bora Bora in the Society Islands, he was instead anchored in a less-traveled archipelago called the Tuamotus—trying to find one particular dolphin.

“Where we are here, there was a dolphin that swam up to me, in this pass, and let me pet her like a puppy dog,” Giles said in mid-May. “Came right up to me, and I really didn’t know what to do. I started petting her back, and she rolled over for me to rub her belly. After six, seven, eight minutes, she swam up to the surface to get some air. So, I’m hoping she’s still there.”

Such are the goals a yacht owner can set when he owns a boat built by Nordhavn . The brand has been synonymous with go-anywhere, ocean-crossing powerboats since 1989, when it completed Hull No. 1 of the N46. Today, the company makes some of the best trawlers and offers models from 41 to 148 feet length overall and routinely sees owners cruising them everywhere from the Panama Canal to Australia.

Giles became part of the Nordhavn family about a decade ago, when he bought a Nordhavn 86 on the brokerage market. He liked the boat well enough but never got any farther than the Caribbean. He’s not sure exactly where, but it was somewhere in those islands—maybe the Grenadines, maybe St. Maarten—where, he says, “I just decided that I wanted to go around the world.”

As the chairman of Giles Automotive, he had the ability to do it. He ordered a Nordhavn 96 and took delivery five years ago at the factory in China. That’s the moment his circumnavigation began aboard the N96 VivieRae . It’s been continuing ever since.

Nordhavn 96 interior

“I want to take my time,” he says. “When I picked up the boat, the trip was 270 days from China to San Diego, and I was on the boat 210 of those 270 days. That, and I am just kind of bored of the Caribbean. I wanted to go somewhere different. Where I am right now, in Apataki, that’s an atoll just north of Fakarava, and it’s very remote. Those are the places where I love to be—the places where most people don’t go.”

Building a boat from scratch was a process he found intriguing. He hired interior designer Destry Darr, lengthened the sky-lounge deck and sun deck so the overhangs would provide more shade to the decks below, and built the sky lounge to convert into a fifth stateroom.

“If I want to bring four couples in addition to my wife and myself, I have room for it,” he says. “I also charter some, so the boat can accommodate 10 people.”

He also built a scuba center off the stern to support his passion for diving every day, two to three times a day. There’s space to carry 10 scuba tanks, as well as a station to refill them. There’s also a hyperbaric chamber on board.

Tuamotus dolphin

“I bought it when I bought the boat,” he says. “Just because of how much we dive and how remote we are, if somebody gets the bends, there would be no time or no way to get them to treatment.”

Those kinds of locations also tend to lack trash facilities, which mattered to Giles because he used to end up with stinky bags of garbage in the bow, attracting flies. Aboard VivieRae , Giles asked the yard to build the swim platform, which is usually hollow, with watertight hatches and a freezer plate on one side, so he has a place to store trash when the boat is away from shore for weeks at a time.

“It has worked phenomenally well,” he says. “It almost freezes the trash, and it’s watertight. It’s about 6 feet by the width of the boat.”

Inside VivieRae , Giles had the yard set up an office so he can continue running his automotive company from anywhere in the world. He owns five dealerships and is in the works to buy a sixth, and he owns a tunnel car wash with a second one about to come online. Global Data Systems in Louisiana set him up with the bandwidth he needs, and the yard installed satellite-communications equipment, including a 3-meter Intellian dish.

Nordhavn 96 pilothouse

“Communication hasn’t been a problem,” he says. “There’s worldwide coverage. It allows me to get away and still allows me to stay connected with what’s happening at home.”

And get away he has. So far, his itineraries have included the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Cocos Island for some diving with hammerhead sharks, the Marquesas Islands and more. VivieRae was expected to be in French Polynesia through July before heading to Fiji this month and then Vanuatu from there.

He remembers Vanuatu from a previous visit. It’s a memory as vivid as the dolphin that acted like a puppy.

“We went to some amazing places there,” he says. “One was a volcanic island where the caldera had collapsed, so we could sail up into the middle of the island. As we approached it, about 20 dugout canoes came out to greet us. Our mate was ahead of us in the tender, and I was flying my drone, and these looked like warriors coming out and surrounding him. I thought, Oh, my God. They’re going to kidnap him or something, but they were so happy to see him. They hadn’t seen anyone in three years.

remote islands

“We’ll visit that place again and then go north to the Solomon Islands, and then around to West Papua and Raja Ampat and all through Indonesia, and then Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives, and through the canal to the Med for maybe six months or longer and then back to the Caribbean.”

The day before he spoke with Yachting, Giles had dived at Manihi Atoll, just ahead of a naturally occurring grouper-spawning event.

“At the entrance to the pass, there were thousands of 1-, 2-, 3-pound grouper that were all arriving to spawn,” he says. “As we went through the pass, it was filling up with the sharks that also come to feed on the grouper when they start spawning. These were gray reef sharks and some small whitetip reef sharks, all common in the Pacific.”

He was hoping to see something similar at Fakarava.

“That’s where there’s lots of sharks in the pass, going in and out,” he says. “People that don’t understand think you’re crazy, but I love diving with sharks. When we went out to Cocos, there [were] some tiger sharks out there that have killed a couple people in the last few years, so we were diving with the hammerheads and looking over our shoulders. There are a lot of sharks I wouldn’t want to spend a lot of time with, but the reef sharks are really fun.”

He also likes the comfort that he returns to after every dive. VivieRae is the kind of boat he always told himself he’d buy when he turned 60. Now that he’s 68, he appreciates having not only go-anywhere capabilities, but also plenty of creature comforts.

yacht stateroom

“He uses that boat as his own personal cruise ship to take him anywhere he wants, and it has all of the amenities,” says Jenny Stern, Nordhavn’s director of marketing. “If you look at their Instagram, it’s phenomenal—the diving, the fishing, the local food, the locals themselves, getting into the cultures where they visit. He is the epitome of what we hope the average Nordhavn owner will strive to do.”

Giles definitely is still striving to explore, and he says he’ll probably buy a 120- or 130-foot yacht next, to get even more interior volume for even more comfortable world exploration.

“But when I bring people on the boat and tell them that, they always ask, ‘Why?’” he says. “I don’t know why.”

He’s just going.

Living Large Aboard A 96-Foot Yacht

October 31, 2013 / 11:28 PM EDT / CBS Miami

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Welcome aboard the ultimate pleasure boat, an Italian made and designed Ferretti 960. The 96-foot yacht is the epitome of luxury elegance, and style.

Ferretti Group's CEO of the Americas, James Henderson, allowed CBS4's Lisa Petrillo on board from their Fort Lauderdale waterfront showroom, just before opening day at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

"This is largest Ferretti yacht they built," said Henderson, "The price is 11 and a half million. This is a boat we launched in Cannes in September, it's the newest addition to our entire fleet."

This particular yacht is privately owned. In the main salon, with elegant woods and hand-crafted leather trim, the high-quality is apparent in all the finishing.

"We have a group of designers in Italy that spec out all of the boats. We tend to be minimalist and contemporary, but you can basically decorate as you like," Henderson said.

The elegant dining room sits 10 people. Moving forward—a rare find—is a master cabin on the main deck—usually all staterooms are below deck.

"For a boat of this size, 96-feet, to have a master on deck is very unique," he said.

The large master bath has a rain shower and all the comforts of a luxury home.

Downstairs are four identical staterooms, each with its own bathroom, and each with its own queen-size bed that can also be separated.

The Bridge is the ultimate command center.

"It's state of the art electronics. You can switch the screens between different views: all of engine activity, weather radar, chart-plotting, even cameras all over," Hendersen said.

The outdoor areas, with both covered and uncovered seating, are breath-taking. This particular 960 has a custom jacuzzi outside, in addition to the full wet bar and barbeque grill area.

This Grand Dame of Ferretti Yachts is one of 20 boats on display for the company at this year's boat show. Of the seven brands Ferretti owns, the 27-foot sexy Riva sells out the fastest at one million dollars.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is on through Monday but the Feretti Showroom, off the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale, is open year round.
