For every shoe, there’s a foot, and for every boating enthusiast, there’s a yacht. For those individuals who like to cruise their yachts across blue water, spend months on board or voyage to remote beaches and quiet coves, a trawler yacht is the go-to vessel choice. But even within this yacht genre, there are many options. For example, there are some mighty midsize trawlers that are easily capable of transatlantic crossings for an adventurous couple, and then there are megayacht-size craft with next-level amenities that require extra crew. Some trawler-yacht builders offer significant customization and others work from a fixed options list. There are single-engine trawlers and twin-engine trawlers. One thing that is common is that these trawler yachts are designed from the ground up for yachtsmen with wanderlust in their hearts.

Nordhavn 96

The Nordhavn 96 is the yacht builder’s second-largest yacht its 17-model fleet, which ranges from 41 to 120 feet length overall. (There is a new 112 on the drawing table.) The builder says the N96 is based on its earlier 86-footer with a 10-foot cockpit extension, which increases both main-deck, skylounge and below-deck volume. The N96 we reviewed was built by an owner who previously had an 86-foot Nordhavn, but with his plans for extended cruises to remote destinations, the 96 was the right size for his voyaging plans. In fact, since the owner took delivery of the boat, it has been on a continuous circumnavigation.

Beneteau Grand Trawler 62

Beneteau’s Grand Trawler 62 has 1,000-plus-mile range and 20-knot speed with twin 730 hp i6 MAN diesels . The Grand Trawler 62 is the builder’s flagship in its Trawler series, which also includes the Swift Trawler 35 , Swift Trawler 41 Sedan ,  Swift Trawler 41 Fly and Swift Trawler 48 . Small touches set the Beneteau Grand Trawler 62 apart. They include sea rails on all lockers to keep stowed food and gear in place, leather-wrapped interior handrails for security in a seaway, and leather drawer pulls like those found on larger yachts. Long-range cruising accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom aft, a forepeak VIP and twin-berth guest stateroom. A Quick X3 gyrostabilizer helps mitigate any potential rocking and rolling on rough days.

Kadey-Krogen 52

The Kadey-Krogen 52 is the trawler-yacht builder’s smallest offering in its raised-pilothouse series, complete with a Portuguese Bridge. Owners can choose from either a two- or three-stateroom layout, and between a single-diesel engine or twin-diesel engines, for owners seeking redundancy. The standard engine is a 231 hp John Deere diesel. With the single-engine setup, draft is 5’5” and with twins it’s a shallower 4’6”. At 6 knots, range is an ocean-crossing 4,850 nautical miles. At 7 knots, it’s 3,300 nm. At 9 knots, it 1,700 nm. The builder states, “The entire Krogen 52 is built from only three molded pieces for maximized structural integrity. There are no additional secondary bonds or caulk joints that can inevitably cause issues. All deck and superstructures are cored and vacuum-bagged to maximize strength while minimizing weight.” Additionally, six longitudinal stringers enhance overall strength.

Bering Yachts B76

Lemanja  is the first custom boat that Bering has built in this size range. The yacht is notable for its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, and for its 4,000-nautical-mile-plus range with its twin 404 hp Cummins QSL9 diesel engines. As rugged as the Bering 76 is built on the outside, it also offers homelike comforts in its skylounge inside, offering panoramic views out large windows surrounding the space. Sole-to-ceiling glass offers similar views in the open-plan salon. Accommodations are fox six guests in three staterooms with a master stateroom and two guest staterooms, plus crew accommodations. In addition to its traditional diesel engines, the B76 has a solar-rechargeable battery bank for hybrid propulsion.

Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge

The Ranger Tugs R-43 Command Bridge is a long-distance cruiser with creature comforts. Our expert found the R-43 Command Bridge to be a solid candidate to cruise The Great Loop . We agree. Twin Volvo Penta IPS450 pod drives give the boat efficient low and high cruise speeds at 7 and 18 knots, respectively. For those that have work during their cruise, the R-43 Command bridge’s master stateroom is set up with an office with a desk. Long trips require extra stowage and a way to clean salty clothes, so on the R-43 Command Bridge there is a washer, dryer, auxiliary refrigerator/freezer and stowage under the dinette, which rises on electric rams. Voyagers who buy a R-43 Commander Bridge can opt for a Factory Delivery Experience, which is three days of instruction on Puget Sound, and includes in boat systems, handling and maintenance.

Beneteau Swift Trawler 48

The Beneteau Swift Trawler 48 has a 1,300-nautical-mile range at 8 knots, but can also speed away at 26 knots if the weather goes south in a hurry. Based on the builder’s 47-footer , the three-stateroom, two-head Swift Trawler 48 has a resin-infused fiberglass hull. Power is a pair of 425 hp Cummins diesels. The main-deck layout includes a galley aft setup, which is accessible to the cockpit. There, the seating and dining area can be fully enclosed, with tracks in place for side curtains. The helmsman is kept comfortable on long passages with a bolstered, pedestal bucket-style seat with a flip-up footrest. The Swift Trawler 48 we reviewed had upgraded 12-inch Raymarine HybridTouch displays (9-inch screens are standard).

Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Designed for serious extended cruising,  Kadey-Krogen Yachts 50 Open provides owners with amenities that will enhance those longer passages. The galley is fitted with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer, a four-burner Wolf range, a microwave and an optional dishwasher. Unlike in many trawlers and their traditional pilothouse design, the galley is located on the same level as the helm and salon. Belowdecks is the master stateroom amidships with two hanging lockers, 12 cabinets, additional drawers for stowage and an en suite head, shower and two sinks. Forward of the master is an office. The 50 Open’s hull has soft chines and a curved after end, much like the characteristics of a sailboat built for cruising. The result is an efficient hull form that provides a gentle landing into troughs when the sea gets a temper. This trawler can cruise at 6 knots for 5,000 nautical miles; 7 knots for 3,000 nautical miles; 8 knots for 2,100 nautical miles; and 9 knots for 1,200 nautical miles.

Outer Reef 620 Trident

Outer Reef Yachts 620 Trident delivers a three-stateroom layout and optional 600 hp Cummins diesels that allow this vessel to approach a top hop of 21 knots. Cruising speed is a little over 16 knots, burning about 34 gallons of fuel per hour at 2,750 rpm. The amidships master stateroom has 6-foot-8-inch headroom, a walk-in closet and a shower enclosed in smoked glass. In the forepeak VIP stateroom, there are seven drawers, a hanging locker, a 31-inch Samsung TV and 7-foot headroom. The portside guest stateroom can convert to an office, too. The aft galley has a U-shape countertop, a three-burner electric cooktop, a Bosch microwave and a Vitrifrigo refrigerator and freezer. Cherry, walnut and oak are the available wood options.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge

It’s obvious after a quick peek inside the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge that the  Grand Banks Yachts  trademark external DNA is retained. The deck, cabin house and skylounge are all composed of infused carbon fiber, reducing weight aloft and creating a lower center of gravity. With twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels , the 60 Skylounge can accelerate to 31 knots and cruise at about 25 knots. The 60 Skylounge can also travel up to 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on a 1,530-gallon fuel tank. Twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s are also available.

Krogen Express 52

The Krogen Express 52 runs on twin 440 hp Yanmar diesels and can cruise at 8 knots for 1,680 nautical miles or at 16 knots for 500 nautical miles. Top hop:  22 knots. In the interior,  Krogen Express  has outfitted the 52 with a master stateroom and a guest stateroom. The former has a queen island berth, more than 7-foot headroom, hanging lockers and smaller cubbies to port and to starboard, and an en suite head with a molded fiberglass shower stall with a seat, a VacuFlush toilet and a granite countertop. A power lift elevates the berth and grants access to more stowage underneath. The Krogen Express 52’s salon has a 26-inch HD LED TV and a home-theater system, leather Stressless chairs to port and a built-in, L-shape settee to starboard. The galley boasts granite countertops, a three-burner Force 10 propane range with an oven, a refrigerator, a GE microwave oven, a deep Elkay sink and a pullout sprayer faucet. There is a Buff Ultraleather Stidd helm seat for extra comfort during long runs.

Grand Banks 85 Skylounge

The Grand Banks 85 Skylounge comes in at more than 87 feet length overall and displaces 108,000 pounds, with a 22-plus-foot beam and an air draft of just under 26 feet. Owners can choose either a three- or four-stateroom layout. The standard motors are twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS diesels, twin 1,300 hp MAN straight-shaft diesels are optional. With the larger engines, owners can also choose an optional stern thruster, in addition to the standard bow thruster. With the IPS diesels, top speed is 26.5 knots and fuel burn is 100 gallons per hour, resulting in a range of 699 nautical miles. At a 21-knot cruise speed, fuel consumption drops to 57 gph, and range climbs to 972 nm. At a 9-knot jog, fuel burn falls to 9 gph, and the Grand Banks 85 Skylounge can cruise nonstop for about 2,500 nautical miles.

Vicem 82 Classic Flybridge

The Vicem 82 Classic is a flybridge model built in cold-molded mahogany, which creates a stout hull form with reduced weight. The yacht is notable for its timeless Downeast lines and strong joiner work. For cruising enthusiasts, the Classic 82 Flybridge is powered with twin 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 diesels . The yacht has a top-end speed of 17.8 knots, and the cruising speed is 15 knots. At 9 knots, and considering a 10-percent fuel reserve, range is reportedly 1,100 nautical miles.  Accommodations three en-suite-equipped staterooms. The master stateroom is full-beam and amidships with a king-size berth is on centerline. The starboard-side guest stateroom and a forepeak VIP each have queen-size berths.

Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht

Built for an enthusiastic cruising couple after a three-year boat search, the Outer Reef Yachts 610 Motoryacht (part of the builder’s Classic series ), was customized with a fore-and-aft berth in the owners’ stateroom (as in, not athwartships), and berths rather than bunks in the smaller of two guest staterooms. This Outer Reef 610 was designed to be used as a liveaboard vessel, so the salon is not set up for dining (there are tables in the pilothouse, on the aft deck and on the bridge). A pair of swivel chairs in the salon face the built-in couch and the pop-up TV to port. The 610 is built with hand-laid fiberglass, PVC coring above the waterline, resin infusion and a vinylester barrier coat against osmosis. Power is twin 500 hp John Deere 6090 diesels turning ZF transmissions . The 610 tops out at about 13.5 knots with full tanks and 21 people aboard. The engines burn 20 gph at 1,800 rpm for 11 knots at 45 percent engine load. Those numbers should allow it to cross oceans without shortening engine life.

Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot

Nordhavn has long been known for its stout circumnavigation -capable craft, and the Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot carries on the the tradition of a beefy build with addition of…speed. Twenty-knots-plus, actually. Twin 715 hp Cummins diesel inboards and a new semidisplacement hull form  are said to be key to the performance equation. The Nordhavn 59CP has a 777-nautical-mile range at a 9.3-knot cruise, and a 255-nm range at its 20.3-knot top-end. Construction is a solid fiberglass hull bottom supported by full-length longitudinal stringers and a series of transversal supports for added backbone. High freeboard should keep the decks dry in a seaway, while rails keep the crew secure during transits. Nordhavn says the 59CP has a “CE category A unlimited offshore rating, ensuring the vessel has the seakeeping and strength capabilities to take on most serious coastal cruises up to 1,000 miles.”

Marlow Yachts 58E

Following on the successful Marlow 57 , the Marlow 58E was started from scratch on a blank sheet of paper. The essence of the 58E is that it has better performance and more internal and external volume than her predecessor. The centerline length grew 10 inches over the 57, but the waterline length increased 16 inches and the beam widened 4 inches. If you were to examine the two boats out of the water, you would see more bell-shaped forward sections making for a soft impact with the vee’d portion. Power options start with twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels, but the 58E we got aboard had beefier twin 1,015 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. Top speed: 27.9 knots. At 8 knots, the Marlow 58E can cruise nonstop for 1,400 nautical miles.

What is a trawler yacht?

A true trawler typically has a full-displacement hull form and robust construction to handle open-water operation, and it’s designed to operate self-sufficiently for long periods of time. They are slow-cruising vessels, but over the years, hybrid yachts called fast trawlers have emerged to offer displacement-speed operation as well as the ability to run at planing speeds when desired.

What is a full-displacement hull form?

A displacement-hull form is known is for its rounded nature and deep draft. Full-displacement vessels do not plane on the water, but rather push through the water. This hull design makes displacement-hull vessels incredibly seakindly, but it also makes them relatively slow (think 5, 6, 7, 8 knots) when compared to semidisplacement- and planning-hull designs.

Is a long-range cruiser the same as a trawler?

While all trawlers are certainly long-range cruisers, not all long-range cruisers are trawlers. True trawlers will have full-displacement hull designs and not all long-range cruisers have them.

SeaPiper 37

SeaPiper 37 Details

The SeaPiper 37 is a contemporary trawler designed for ease of use, comfortable living, and above all, simplicity. It is a fully capable sea boat that has sufficient range for its owners to explore inland waterways, enjoy extended coastal cruising, and make occasional offshore passages. 

Of particular interest to some cruisers, the boat has the added benefit of being fully trailerable without being dismantled, and it can be trucked without special permits on North American roads. There are very few cruising yachts whose owners can spend the summer on the beautiful waters of the Pacific Northwest or Alaska, and then relax during the winter months in the Bahamas or Mexico, all in the same calendar year. 

The SeaPiper 37 can do just that. 

With general specs of 37’2” LOA and a beam of 8’6”, the boat draws under 3 feet. The foundation of this compact trawler is the ballasted and easily driven hard chine hull. This same shape that makes it trailer friendly also allows for wider cruising opportunities.

The boat has an air draft of 14 feet with the radar mast up, 8’6” when it is lowered. This means the SeaPiper 37 is great for exploring canal systems, transiting the ICW, and completing the Great Loop and its many variations without difficulty.

Not many boats can do it all, but the SeaPiper 37 may be one of them.

The hull of the 37-footer is solid fiberglass, and the builder uses honeycomb coring in the topsides and superstructure. 

The boat is powered by a single Beta 85hp diesel engine. Located low in the hull to provide an almost straight run of the propeller shaft level to the water line, the resulting low center of gravity of the engine and tankage adds significantly to the high level of stability.

In addition to this inherent stability, the SeaPiper 37 matches perfectly with the optional Seakeeper2 gyro stabilizer system to improve the already comfortable motion at sea and at anchor. Life is good with a low center of gravity and 2,000lbs of ballast.

The layout allows one to move from one space to the next without excessive climbing of ladders or stairs, with the forward stateroom and head separated from the pilothouse, salon, and galley by the large midship cockpit. The trademark element of all SeaPipers is this large and protected cockpit. It is deep and secure with large scuppers to make short work of draining the cockpit in the unlikely event of a boarding sea. Two side cockpit doors provide optimum access to docks and dinghies alongside. They are also perfect for those who cruise with pets.

The master stateroom and head are forward of the cockpit, ensuring privacy in the stateroom separated from the rest of the boat. The foredeck has 14-inch-wide side decks for crew to move forward for anchoring and line handling duty, and 31-inch handrails add to the security.

Aft of the midship cockpit is a sliding door into the pilothouse, and the helm area shares space with the cozy salon and galley. The salon has an L-shaped settee and adjustable table that converts into a double berth as necessary. The compact galley is aft and has the counter space and equipment to keep crew well fed. 

And the cook can safely step out into the aft cockpit at the stern to take a break during meal prep. With the stern door open, the ventilation through the main cabin is fantastic. The aft cockpit contains LPG tank storage and double transom doors that open out to the swim platform. This secure aft cockpit is ideal for stern line handling.

Careful inspection reveals there are four watertight bulkheads in the boat, creating five watertight compartments for the ultimate in safety at sea.

Sitting on the starboard-side, adjustable helm seat in the pilothouse, one can navigate the boat with complete confidence, as lines of sight are outstanding in almost all directions. The location of the helm keeps both ends of the boat in sight. With a large chartplotter front and center in the helm console to keep track of one’s progress, it is a simple matter to slowly approach a lock or narrow channel, thruster controls within reach, adjusting the single engine throttle to make just enough way on to gently place a fender against the lock wall. One can step into the midship cockpit and grab lines in a matter of seconds. Simple and easy.

One lifts the main hatch into the engine room from the midship cockpit to check all fluid levels and look for leaks, drips, or loose connections on wires or hoses. Everything is within reach, and there is no guesswork involved as there is no gear hidden or out of sight. It is an uncluttered engine space that will make every owner happy.

The boat is a good choice for a short-handed crew who want a capable trawler that is easy to handle, with a long keel for directional stability, and with the space and equipment for extended cruising and living aboard. It is not the right boat for cruising with multiple couples or large families, and it is not intended to serve as a dockside condo for those who like waterfront living and don’t leave the dock.

In many ways, the SeaPiper 37 is proof that less is more. It has all the essentials, yet is not large enough for washer/dryer, wine cooler, espresso machine, and all the appliances that seem to come aboard larger trawlers. And whose owners often must remain in port waiting for parts and repairs.

It is an ideal choice for the Great Loop, and it certainly has the range to cruise SE Alaska and most tropical island chains. But why stop there, when one considers the trailer potential of taking this cruiser all over North America?

THE PASSAGE MAKER

Deep hull design and cruiser stern.

The Selene 45 is an entirely Next Generation Selene. She is the smallest model of the popular and proven Selene Pilothouse Trawler line. Designed and built like her larger sisters, she is a serious passage-maker , and a superlative coastwise and inland cruiser. The galley on the new Selene 45 can be offset to starboard providing a spacious salon with an L-shaped sofa in genuine leather and a hi-lo table that can be extended to a large dining table, or the center galley is still an option. The raised pilothouse watch settee offers a commanding view for the crew with a fixed table and  an optional helm chair  can be installed! The Selene 45 is an evolved version of the original Selene 43.

EXTENDED RANGE

The design features the new Deep Hull design with its Cruiser Stern™ that provides a longer water line and less wake drag, as well as more storage space inside the lazarette. It also adds nearly 12″ of height in the engine room  to 66’’, which allows for 200 more gallons (757 l) of fuel! All this is done without increasing the draft, and the LOA is half a foot longer than the first generation Selene 43. Safety is always a priority on all Selene yachts: access to the deck is from the pilothouse port and starboard doors, with sheltered side decks, as well as a Portuguese bridge which keeps the crew safe no matter what the ocean conditions are. On the interior, the next generation design translates to a bigger salon and more comfort and luxury, not to mention a cavernous commissary under the aft end of the salon which can take a huge amount of provisioning, spare parts, dive gear and even a second deep-freezer.

Helmsman Trawlers® are crafted to please the most discerning owners, though are surprisingly affordable. With modern wide-beam hull designs, top name equipment, and fit-and-finish achievable only with labor-intensive craftsmanship, they are a prize choice for those who won’t compromise quality but have no desire to pay too much. The Helmsman Trawlers® factory has considerable experience in the construction of these fine yachts, offers many options, and can expertly accommodate custom modifications.

The hulls of Helmsman Trawlers are robustly constructed of solid fiberglass using modern fiberglass hull construction techniques. Other FRP elements are manufactured using vacuum infusion. Full keels provide capable sea-keeping ability and modern diesel engines provide dependable long-range performance and trouble-free maintenance. Multi-layered construction of interior decks with sound attenuating elements reduce engine noise, and new insulation in our 38E and 43 models helps control temperature and deadens exterior sounds.  

Helmsman Trawlers® most popular yacht is the 38E Pilothouse Trawler. This boat offers the spaciousness of a much larger boat while fitting into a 40-foot slip. The low-rise pilothouse has excellent visibility and open communication with the salon and is a social area too while underway or in port. The full-beam salon is expansive and comfortable, with exceptional light and ventilation. A day head is a rare and practical feature, and the convertible settee and day head can be enclosed to provide a private suite for guests when needed. The flybridge is set back to maintain a low profile – which benefits windage and center-of-gravity. A high, flush bow, sturdy railings, full covered cockpit, deep pilothouse side deck footwells and secure flybridge stairs on both sides increase practicality and safety in adverse conditions.

The Helmsman Trawlers 43 Pilothouse is in steady production. This yacht design is derived from our 38 Pilothouse Trawler and expanded in every dimension. With the additional volume achieved from a longer and wider hull and additional freeboard we’ve added a second stateroom, expanded the salon, added more interior seating, and increased the cockpit area. 

We are pleased to offer the Helmsman Trawlers® 31 Sedan – an update to the original Camano 31. The Camano, with over 270 built, is well-known for many reasons including its outstanding hull design with great sea-keeping characteristics and economy through a wide range of cruising speeds. Helmsman Trawlers® has updated the lines on this boat, completely redesigned the interior, and has created a true pocket trawler yacht offered at an affordable price.

The Helmsman Trawlers® 37 is built on the same hull as the 38E and is available in one or two stateroom versions for cruisers who prefer the classic Europa-style lines and walkaround decks.

Bering 72 is a classic example of an ocean-going, steel-hulled explorer yacht, ideally suited to long expeditions and shorthanded sailing. A total of 6,340 gallons (24,000 liters) of fuel allow for an impressive range of more than 4,000 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 8 knots.

The Bering 72’s enhanced design and engineering incorporates over 100000 nm of navigation and feedback by her predecessor’s (the Bering 65) owners. The transom is nearly vertical with a large swimming platform, while her streamlined appearance is further developed with sleeker lines and large panoramic windows. In addition to maximized guest living spaces, the bow section’s vertical portholes add a contemporary touch of the Bering 72

Brief Specifications

Bering 72 presents an advanced development of a very successful Bering 65 model, of which three hulls were built. While creating Bering 72, the Bering Yachts’ in-house design team has collected feedback from the owners and captains of the 65 model after the boats navigated more than 100,000 miles in different climate and sea conditions. Bering 72 has retained distinctive trawler’s lines of her predecessor, but this is a completely new boat: larger, better equipped, with more supplies, and very well inhabited. Bering 72 is a true modern classic of the steel-hulled explorer yacht, perfect for long family expeditions as well as shorthanded sailing.

Design / Exterior / General view

Bred as a true explorer, Bering 72 originated from classic trawlers’ lines, but one can hardly recognize this kinship. The stem has a less overhang angle, while the transom is almost vertical with a large swimming platform that reveals the vessel as a luxury yacht. Streamlined appearance is further developed with different bow and stern levels, some sharp lines in the aluminum superstructure, and large pilot deck panoramic windows. The bow section with vertical portholes adds more to the contemporary look of Bering 72.

Bering 72 is capable of any ocean crossing. 264,522 lbs of displacement of the 22,18 meters steel hull guarantees smooth sailing in any weather conditions and sea state. 6,340 gallons (24,000 l) of fuel makes for more than 4000 miles travel range with a cruising speed of 8 knots.

Living spaces and entertainment

Bering 72 has a three-deck layout. The hard-topped teak-decked flybridge with helm station provides enough room for all guests to enjoy sunsets with meals cooked right here on the fully equipped galley.

The boat deck is visually divided from the flybridge and can accommodate one big or two small tenders easily launched and recovered with a hydraulic crane.

The main deck features a saloon, galley, and isolated pilothouse on different levels. The saloon has a dinette with a built-in U-shaped settee to starboard. There is a huge 48-inch pullout TV panel to entertain the guests on the port side amidst two wine cabinets.

Moving forward, the full-width galley is just aft of the pilothouse. Visually separated from the saloon with stairs, the galley nevertheless keeps the whole bunch together even if some of the guests are fond of (or busy with?) cooking. The galley has abundant storage spaces and is well equipped with fridges, an electrical cooking top, oven, microwave, and trash compactor.

The autonomous pilothouse is well highlighted by panoramic 19 mm tempered glass windows. There is a day head to the port and an L-shaped settee with a table to the starboard.

The outside areas of Bering 72 feature a sun-lounge forward of the pilothouse, an al-fresco dining area in the cockpit, and a large swimming platform.

The lower deck is fully isolated from the engine noises by steel bulkheads with soundproof layers. There is an en-suite full-beam master stateroom in the forward section with a full-size bath and two wardrobes. The en-suite guest cabins are amidst the vessel on port, and the starboard and the crew section are right beside adjacent the engine compartment.

Bering 72 comes in a 3+1 standard layout for a family of travelers with or without a crew.

British designer Kelly Hoppen styled the interior of the first hull and has also created three designs for future owners to choose from. Described as “sophisticated and luxurious,” the open-plan living quarters offer sweeping, panoramic views, and multiple areas for entertaining. The main deck is adorned with a salon, a galley, a dining area, and a plush owner’s suite with a private terrace, while the lower deck is outfitted with five en suite staterooms and cabins for three crew.

The pilothouse isn’t the only singular feature on the 82, either. Pearl says the yacht is the only one of such a size to have a garage large enough to hold a Williams 395, a Sea-Doo Jet Ski, and other equipment. It is also the only one in its class to offer two aft deck configurations (Riviera or Veranda) to cater to different seafarers. Other highlights of the model include a foredeck lounge with large sun pads and a luxe flybridge with a dining table, wet bar, sun pad, and hot tub.

As for grunt, the yacht can be equipped with two MAN engines rated at 1,650, 1,800, or 2,000 horses. It has an estimated top speed of 33 knots and a cruising range of 287 nautical miles.

A true boutique builder, Pearl produces only a limited number of vessels annually to ensure quality and exclusivity. The 82 is one of four models in the lineup, alongside a 62, 72 , and 95 . The first 82 will debut at the upcoming Cannes Yachting Festival.

NEW BEDFORD — Ed Anthes-Washburn is very familiar with the Port of New Bedford.

His background includes 11 years with the New Bedford Port Authority, the last six as port director.

Today, he's the managing director of Coast Line Transfers, or CLT Marine , which is one of the seven firms seeking to become part of the New Bedford State Pier's redevelopment.

CLT is a commercial marine service provider to the expanding offshore wind industry, as well as the marine industry in the Northeast.

Proposing use of existing Buildings 1 and 2

In simple terms, Anthes-Washburn said during a presentation hosted by MassDevelopment in May, "We're boat people who want to do boat stuff on the east face" of State Pier.

MassDevelopment , the state’s development finance agency and land bank, manages the state-owned, 8-acre pier.

A MassDevelopment review committee is evaluating the proposals.

The seven proposals before the committee could be approved together, separately or denied altogether. A decision deadline has not been announced.

CLT, which is operating from the State Pier now, proposes the use of existing Buildings 1 and 2, including about 2.3 acres of pier space in all.

What does CLT want to do at the New Bedford pier?

They want to continue to develop their relationship with the offshore wind industry while providing a hub for marine industrial activity, as well as rejuvenate the cargo offloading in the facility.

Anthes-Washburn said CLT would be acting as the anchor tenant, "but we do want to operate it as sort of an open terminal."

He added, "We do think that construction support and maintenance can happen here on the east face so we want to continue to develop that version of construction support and operations and maintenance."

Anthes-Washburn said, "We envision using the facility that's there, using the infrastructure and the utilities that are there, and doing very little differently from what you see now."

'We can work with Seastreak'

He said there is 20,000 square feet on Building 1's first floor they're focused on. The other 5,000 square feet is occupied by Seastreak, he said.

They don't want to push Seastreak out, he said. "We think we can work with Seastreak."

The building's second floor would be used for warehouse space.

They also want to use the cold storage capability in Building 2.

"It's a real asset. There's a big opportunity to continue to provision offshore and fishing vessels" with fresh food through the cold storage capability.

Their proposal will generate about 120 new jobs, he said.

Anthes-Washburn added, "We think it's completely reasonable to expect 270 indirect jobs from our operations over there."

He added, "The activity that is generated on this pier really does trickle down. Whether it's fuel, provisions, the hotels."

"We did the first [crew] transfer for the Vineyard Wind project back in November 2022."

A court has convicted Alsu Kurmasheva , a Russian-American journalist for the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, of spreading false information about the Russian army and sentenced her to 6½ years in prison after a secret trial, court records and officials said Monday.

The conviction in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s central region of Tatarstan, came on Friday, the same day a court in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich  of espionage and sentenced him to 16 years in prison in a case that the U.S. called politically motivated.

Kurmasheva , a 47-year-old editor for RFE/RL’s Tatar-Bashkir language service, was convicted of “spreading false information” about the military, according to the website of the Supreme Court of Tatarstan. Court spokesperson Natalya Loseva confirmed Kurmasheva’s conviction and revealed the sentence to The Associated Press by phone in the case classified as secret.

Kurmasheva was ordered to serve the sentence in a medium-security penal colony, Loseva said.

“My daughters and I know Alsu has done nothing wrong. And the world knows it too. We need her home,” Kurmasheva’s husband, Pavel Butorin, said in a post Monday on X.

He had said last year the charges stemmed from a book the Tatar-Bashkir service released in 2022 called “No to War” — “a collection of short stories of Russians who don’t want their country to be at war with Ukraine.” Butorin had said the book doesn’t contain any “false information.”

Asked about the case, RFE/RL President and CEO Stephen Capus denounced the trial and conviction of Kurmasheva as “a mockery of justice.”

“The only just outcome is for Alsu to be immediately released from prison by her Russian captors,” he said in a statement to the AP.

“It’s beyond time for this American citizen, our dear colleague, to be reunited with her loving family,” Capus said.

Kurmasheva, who holds U.S. and Russian citizenship and lives in Prague with her husband and two daughters, was taken into custody in October 2023 and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent while collecting information about the Russian military.

Later, she was also charged with spreading “false information” about the Russian military under legislation that effectively criminalized any public expression about the war in Ukraine that deviates from the Kremlin line. The legislation was adopted in March 2022, just days after the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine, and has since been used to target Kremlin critics at home and abroad, implicating scores of people in criminal cases and sending dozens to prison.

Kurmasheva was initially stopped in June 2023 at Kazan International Airport after traveling to Russia the previous month to visit her ailing elderly mother. Officials confiscated her U.S. and Russian passports and fined her for failing to register her U.S. passport. She was waiting for her passports to be returned when she was arrested on new charges in October that year. RFE/RL has repeatedly called for her release.

RFE/RL was told by Russian authorities in 2017 to register as a foreign agent, but it has challenged Moscow’s use of foreign agent laws in the European Court of Human Rights. The organization has been fined millions of dollars by Russia.

In February, RFE/RL was outlawed in Russia as an undesirable organization. Its Tatar-Bashkir service is the only major international news provider reporting in those languages, in addition to Russian, to audiences in the multiethnic, Muslim-majority Volga-Urals region.

The swift and secretive trials of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich i n Russia’s highly politicized legal system raised hopes for a possible prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington. Russia has previously signaled a possible exchange involving Gershkovich, but said a verdict in his case must come first.

Arrests of Americans are increasingly common in Russia, with nine U.S. citizens known to be detained there as tensions between the two countries have escalated over fighting in Ukraine.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the U.S.

He has been behind bars since his arrest, time that will be counted as part of his sentence. Most of that was in Moscow’s notorious Lefortovo Prison — a czarist-era lockup used during Josef Stalin’s purges, when executions were carried out in its basement. He was transferred to Yekaterinburg for the trial.

Gershkovich was the first U.S. journalist arrested on espionage charges since Nicholas Daniloff in 1986, at the height of the Cold War. Foreign journalists in Russia were shocked by Gershkovich’s arrest, even though the country has enacted increasingly repressive laws on freedom of speech after sending troops into Ukraine.

U.S. President Joe Biden said after his conviction that Gershkovich “was targeted by the Russian government because he is a journalist and an American.”

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield accused Moscow last week of treating “human beings as bargaining chips.” She singled out Gershkovich and ex-Marine  Paul Whelan , 53, a corporate security director from Michigan, who is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted on spying charges that he and the U.S. denied.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that when it comes to Gershkovich, Whelan and other Americans wrongfully detained in Russia and elsewhere, the U.S. is working on the cases “quite literally every day.”

Sam Greene of the Center for European Policy Analysis said the conviction and sentencing of Kurmasheva and Gershkovich on the same day “suggests — but does not prove — that the Kremlin is preparing a deal. More likely, they are preparing to offer up a negotiating table that Washington will find it difficult to ignore.”

In a series of posts on X, Greene stressed that “the availability of a negotiating table shouldn’t be confused with the availability of a deal,” and that Moscow has no interest in releasing its prisoners — but it is likely to “seek the highest possible price for its bargaining chips, and to seek additional concessions along the way just to keep the talks going.”

Washington “should obviously do what it can” to get Gershkovich, Kurmasheva, imprisoned opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza and other political prisoners out, he said, adding: “But if Moscow demands what it really wants — the abandonment of Ukraine — what then?”

For decades, one industry has sustained the small, remote Colombian village of Caño Cabra: cocaine.

Those who live in this community in the central part of the country rise early nearly every morning to pick coca leaf, scraping brittle branches, sometimes until their hands bleed. Later, they mix the leaves with gasoline and other chemicals to make chalky white bricks of coca paste.

But two years ago, the villagers said, something alarming happened: The drug traffickers who buy the coca paste and turn it into cocaine stopped showing up. Suddenly, people who were already poor had no income. Food became scarce. An exodus to other parts of Colombia in search of jobs followed. The town of 200 people shrunk to 40.

The same pattern was repeated again and again in communities across the country where coca is the only source of income.

Colombia, the global nexus of the cocaine industry, where Pablo Escobar became the world’s best-known criminal, and which still produces more of the drug than any other nation, is facing tectonic shifts as a result of domestic and global forces that are reshaping the drug industry.

The changing dynamics have led to blocks of unsold coca paste piling up across Colombia. The purchase of the paste in more than half of the country’s coca-growing regions has dropped precipitously or disappeared completely, spurring a humanitarian crisis in many remote, impoverished communities.

The drug market had never seen “such a dramatic downturn,” said Felipe Tascón, an economist who has studied the illicit drug economy and directed a national government program to help move coca farmers to legal crops.

The upending of the cocaine industry is, in part, an unintended consequence of a landmark peace deal eight years ago with the country’s largest armed group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which ended one phase of a conflict that has lasted decades.

The leftist group financed its war largely through cocaine and relied on thousands of farmers to provide the bright green coca plant — the drug’s main ingredient.

But once the FARC exited the cocaine industry, it was replaced by smaller criminal groups pursuing a new economic model, said Leonardo Correa of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime: buying large quantities of coca from a smaller number of farmers and limiting their operations to border regions where it is easier to move drugs out of the country.

That means towns like Caño Cabra, deep in the country’s interior, about 165 miles southeast of Bogotá, the capital, have seen their sole business largely vanish.

“It’s been difficult,” said Yamile Hernandez, 42, a coca farmer and mother of two teenagers who has struggled to put food on the table. “I don’t know what will happen.”

At the same time, other countries have become important competitors and have contributed to changes in Colombia’s drug market. Ecuador has emerged as a top cocaine exporter, while cultivation of coca leaf has increased in Peru and Central America.

That has helped push global cocaine production higher than it has ever been. And while cocaine consumption has flattened in the United States, it is growing in Europe and Latin America and emerging in other regions, like Asia.

In Colombia, government policies, including a move away from eradicating coca plants, and technological advances in cultivation, have allowed coca production to expand despite decades of investment by the United States to try to dismantle the cocaine industry.

Annual production of the coca leaf and cocaine hit new highs in 2022, with the manufacturing of the drug rising 24 percent from the previous year, according to the most recent data available from the United Nations.

“We’re seeing production at levels that Pablo Escobar dreamed about,” said a U.S. official who has worked for years on drug interdiction in Colombia and asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

“You go to coca fields,” he added, “and it’s like standing in a cornfield in Iowa — you can’t see the end.”

The boom in cocaine production has led to a jump in exports. Cocaine export revenues rose to $18.2 billion in 2022 from $12.4 billion in 2021, according to an analysis by Bloomberg Economics, which predicted that they would surpass oil revenues , the country’s top export, as soon as this year.

Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, has focused on targeting drug trafficking networks and a shift away from eradicating the coca leaf has helped feed the surge in cocaine production, according to U.N. and U.S. officials.

“With Petro’s disinterest in forced eradication, there are effectively no barriers to entry into the coca field,” said Kevin Whitaker, a former U.S. ambassador to Colombia and a nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council.

Gloria Miranda, who now directs the government’s coca substitution program, disputed this claim, noting that drug seizures had increased significantly during Mr. Petro’s nearly two years in office. Critics say that is largely because so much more cocaine is being produced.

New fertilizers have also helped make it easier to grow more coca, even as many Colombian armed groups contributing to the country’s continuing conflict are relying far less on drugs for income and turning to other illicit activities that do not draw as much scrutiny from law enforcement, like gold mining, logging and the smuggling of migrants, according to several analysts.

So while cocaine remains an enormous moneymaking enterprise for criminal networks in Colombia, the new economic model has brought suffering to many parts of the country.

At least 55 percent of coca-growing regions in Colombia have seen coca sales plummet, Mr. Correa said.

Like many rural communities, Caño Cabra has no government presence and is controlled by an illegal armed group. There is no electricity, no running water and no public school.

Ms. Hernandez has struggled to come up with the money to send her two children to boarding school in a nearby town so that they will not have to work full time in the coca fields, as she did growing up.

The teenagers, Valentina, 16, and Manuel, 14, did work in the fields while on break from school — not for the pay, which was negligible, but for the free breakfast served by the coca farm’s owner.

Meat, a staple of the Colombian diet, has become scarce.

“All of us haven’t eaten meat for a long time because there is nowhere to buy it, and there is nothing to buy it with,” Ms. Hernandez said.

The economic pain afflicting many coca-growing regions is pushing out many people.

María Manrrique owned a pharmacy in the town of Nueva Colombia, near Caño Cabra, but as coca sales evaporated, customers started pleading that they had no money for medication.

So last year, she moved to the nearest city, San José del Guaviare.

The adjustment was hard. She missed her hometown and the open vistas of the countryside. She felt claustrophobic and lonely.

But she started seeing a therapist for depression and making a living selling empanadas. Ms. Manrrique said she had no plans to leave. In the city, she has better access to insulin for her diabetes, and her young son is getting a better education.

“People are emigrating, and it makes you feel bad because it used to be a good town of good people,” she said. But she added, “I’ve already taken this step, and I’m not going back.”

While some experts say the transformation of the cocaine industry could lead coca plant growers to transition to legal ways of making a living, many worry that farmers could instead switch to other illicit activities.

Jefferson Parrado, 39, the president of the local council that presides over the region that includes Caño Cabra, said many might switch to raising cattle — one of the world’s biggest drivers of deforestation. Other residents said that they might join armed groups out of economic desperation.

“Several regions have achieved economic development thanks to the coca and cocaine market,” said Diego Garcia-Devis, who manages the drug policy program at the Open Society Foundations. “What income will replace coca income? Another illegal income? Mining, trafficking of humans, wildlife, timber? Extortion?”

In many remote areas of Colombia, it is not economically viable to sell other crops because of high transportation costs. By the time produce arrived at market, it would rot, residents said. For many Colombians, the cocaine industry has been their only option.

“It does harm to humanity, and we are aware of that,” Mr. Parrado said. “But for us, it means health, it means education, it means the sustenance of the families in the regions.”

Flux shared details of its new electric boat package today, which consists of a 21′ 6″ center console hull from Scout that is powered by its own electric outboard motor and a 84 kWh marine-grade lithium-ion battery pack.

The result is a 100% electric day boat with room for nine passengers designed for cruising and coastal fishing at sea. The Scout 215 XSF offers a top power output of 150 hp (112 kW) and 100 hp (72 kW) of continuous power. It can cruise at 25 mph, reach a top speed of 30 mph, and offer a top range of up to 30 miles (26 knots) at cruising speeds. Per Flux Marine CEO Ben Sorkin:

The idea behind Flux Marine is to provide a better, more efficient method of boat propulsion. Our 100 hp outboard hits the sweet spot, capable of propelling a 22 ft boat like the Scout XSF for almost any activity on the water. Our goal is to evoke excitement and innovation while ensuring users feel comfortable with what’s powering their boat.

A huge bonus in the all-electric Scout XSF center console boat is its ability to charge via AC or DC plugs when docked. Flux says the vessel can recharge from 20-80% in 7.5 hours on an AC plug (110-, 220-, or 240-volt) or as quickly as 1.5 hours using a DC fast charger.

In addition to the powertrain and battery pack, Flux has integrated the Scout boat with its own designed throttle, UI, and mobile companion app. Flux’s software will help future boat owners monitor and manage their speed and range from the helm, complete with live updates on an integrated Garmin chartplotter.

The all-electric Scout XSF center console boat starts at $120,000 and joins the Scout Dorado 215 and Highfield RIBs in the lineup. All are set to go on sale directly to consumers later this year.

Severe storms devastate upstate New York, Midwest, leaving at least 3 dead: Updates

Another round of storms and heavy rain hit the East Coast on Wednesday after severe weather − including at least one confirmed tornado − wreaked devastation across the Midwest and East Coast and left three people dead.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a wide portion of the East Coast, stretching from Philadelphia to Boston and up to Albany, through 8 p.m. Damaging thunderstorm gusts appeared most concentrated over parts of the Mid-Atlantic into central and southern New England, according to the weather service.

On Tuesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency after the storms caused widespread destruction, wrecking buildings and trees and leaving tens of thousands of households without power, according to poweroutage.us . By late Wednesday, more than 102,000 homes and businesses were without power across New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

One person died in Canastota, a village around 25 miles east of Syracuse, according to an emergency declaration . "Numerous trees and wires" were ripped down in the village, and several roads were impassable, as some areas were under evacuation.

Farther east, the storms ripped through Rome, a city of 31,000, demolishing houses and uprooting trees . The weather service confirmed Wednesday that the tornado touched down in the city on Tuesday afternoon with a rating of EF-2 and peak winds of 135 mph as it traveled just over 5 miles.

'It looks like a war zone'

Rome Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan said the storm tore through the town's historic downtown, pulling down the steeples of two 19th-century churches and permanently changing the city skyline.

The tornado also ripped off roofs of several other buildings, caused exterior brick and concrete walls to collapse, crushed multiple vehicles, and uprooted or snapped branches on hundreds of trees. A strong rotation caused the twister to touch down and travel northeast — directly through the city Rome — before lifting up near Griffiss International Airport.

"Honestly, it looks like a war zone," Lanigan said at a news conference Tuesday evening. "It tugs on your heartstrings."

Officials warned Rome residents to avoid traveling on the streets and to be wary of downed power lines, which could be active.

Hochul posted on X that she was in touch with local officials and would deploy extra resources to impacted areas.

"When something like this happens, you tend to believe it was a tornado," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said at the news conference.

The weather service in Buffalo confirmed that a tornado touched down in the city of Canandaigua, about 100 miles west of Rome, just a day earlier. With a rating of EF-0, the twister traveled around three-quarters of a mile, pulling up trees around Canandaigua Lake, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported .

Flash floods soak Midwest, leaving 2 dead

Meanwhile, floodwaters inundated parts of Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois as the area reeled from thunderstorms that soaked the region and spun up several tornadoes.

A husband and wife, both 88, were left dead after a flood washed away their car in rural Illinois on Tuesday afternoon.

The couple's sinking vehicle was spotted by a 70-year-old man, who local deputies were able to pull out of the flash flood that struck around 35 miles north of downtown St. Louis, according to the Jersey County Sheriff's Office . Authorities later found the woman dead inside her car and her husband's body at a nearby bank.

East of St. Louis, around 200 residents of Nashville, Illinois, were evacuated amid the "imminent failure" of a local dam after the area was hit with more than 6 inches of rain, local officials said . By Tuesday evening, the "immediate safety concern" had passed, and a nearby interstate highway was reopened, according to the Washington County Emergency Management Agency .

The flooding came after a derecho caused severe storms and tornadoes over the region on Monday. A derecho is a rare and destructive wind storm that can bring rapid thunderstorms and showers.

The National Weather Service confirmed 11 tornadoes moved through northern Illinois and northwest Indiana that night, including one near Chicago O'Hare International Airport, forcing travelers to shelter in place .

The weather service also confirmed an EF-1 tornado traveled near Des Moines on Monday at more than 100 mph, leaving behind widespread damage and knocking out power, the Des Moines Register, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported .

Dozens evacuated in Arkansas amid flash floods

Widespread flash floods hit Arkansas on Wednesday after the north-central part of the state was deluged with more than 10 inches in 24 hours, according to the weather service. "Numerous creeks and rivers" in the area were flooding or still rising just before noon local time, forecasters said .

The weather service extended a flood warning for areas near the White River on Wednesday afternoon as water levels rose above 21 feet that morning. The river could rise to crest at 29 feet on Sunday morning.

The flooding damaged infrastructure and forced road closures and evacuations in multiple counties across the state, according to a news release emailed to USA TODAY by Arkansas Division of Emergency Management public information officer Lacey Kanipe. In the town of Flippin, around 140 miles north of Little Rock, up to 40 people were forced to evacuate.

Responders carried out water rescues after several bridges in the area were inundated, the city posted on Facebook. Local officials urged residents to avoid using city roads.

"If you do not have to leave your residences, please stay home!" the Marion County Office of Emergency Management posted to Facebook . 

Around 80 residents of a nursing home in Yellville, a city around 7 miles from Flippin, were forced to evacuate, Tobias Pugsley, vice president of communications and marketing for Baxter Health, told local news . The patients were transported to the county fairgrounds, he said.

Some severe storms clear, but heat wave continues

The extreme weather briefly dissipated on Wednesday morning before the severe thunderstorm watch was issued by the weather service at around 1 p.m.

The storms could bring frequent lightning, heavy wind gusts and put the area at a slight risk of hail or tornadoes through Thursday morning, the weather service warned. Heavy rain could also trigger flash floods.

At the same time, wide swaths of the country could bake in excessive heat as a record-smashing heat wave continues on the East Coast through Wednesday.

Nearly 100 million Americans, 29% of the country, were under heat alerts on Wednesday, according to the National Integrated Heat Health Information System .

The tail end of a heat wave will scorch the I-95 corridor, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Philadelphia, on Wednesday before a cold front brings relief on Thursday, according to the weather service. The area around the nation's capital, including parts of Maryland and Virginia, was under a heat advisory . Heat index values could reach 106 degrees on Wednesday.

The cold front could trigger more severe thunderstorms and showers later in the week. And the heat will return – the weather service said heat risk could be "major" to "extreme" in parts of the West by the weekend.

Temperatures this summer have broken records and left dozens dead. In the first five days of July, temperatures in more than 50 cities in California and Nevada set new records, according to AccuWeather. At least 30 deaths in the West this month were linked to the heat.
