A five-star experience, I must say! Captain Bertrand was an incredible host, a true bon vivant, and an absolute master in the kitchen. We snorkeled, paddleboarded, and swam in stunning locations, far from the  crowds. We were even fortunate enough to encounter some tortues sauvages along the way. The boat is in excellent condition, and the crew members are exceptionally accommodating. I highly recommend it if you are seeking a private charter with great value. C'est magnifique!

Highlight of our vacation

We went out on the moana boat on November 7 th with 15 friends and it was perfect, just as all the other reviews have said, Patrick and his crew were excellent!

Everyone with our group and I mean everyone said it was the best part of their vacation. I think cooking the food  menu on board added a special touch and it was wonderful.

Description said possible sailing. Well, when we got there no sails even on the boat. So motor only. On the ride back, transportation was 20 mins late and made us cross the road to the van that was parked in a travel lane. Was pretty ske tchy. Tour and crew were pretty good though.

I was happy with the pick up and return

I enjoyed the trip and the crew were very attentive. The documentation told us to wear a mask on the transport to the dock and to bring flip flops for the boat. Both these things are wrong. Masks are no longer required and we were not pe rmitted to wear ANY shoes on the boat (Something I did not like. A bit unsanitary that!). We were to meet our boat a 4 PM after the lunch on the beach but the boat didn't turn up until 4:25 ...but no one was there to tell us it was delayed (apparently because the golf cart trip was running late). Better organization is required when plans change.

Staff was very helpful, polite and puts you at ease immediately. I was very happy the the service. They have your back and that made me feel safe.

Happy Tours sells a third party product and provides transportation to and from the excursion starting point. They lacked a bit of organization in the drop off/ pick up before and after the actual excursion, but remedied quickly. Don't w aste your money on the extra fee for the golf cart tour. Its only 45 minutes and you don't get any appreciable time at punta sur.

The MUSA Underwater Museum , officially known as Museo Subacuático de Arte, is a unique non-profit organization serving as a cultural attraction and a conservation project. It is located in the Cancun National Marine Park. It features over 500 life-sized sculptures by international and local artists, submerged between 10 and 20 feet deep, creating an artificial reef system. The best way to witness MUSA is by snorkeling or scuba diving. Cancun has tour operators that allow beginners to dive with an instructor.

Museo Maya de Cancun

The Museo Maya de Cancún y Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito is one of the only cultural institutions in the Hotel Zone. It serves as a gateway to the ancient Maya civilization and houses a remarkable collection of Maya artifacts. Adjacent to the museum lies the San Miguelito archaeological site, where visitors can wander through the remnants of Maya structures and imagine life as it unfolded in this region centuries ago.

Cancun Nightclub Scene

Cancún’s nightclubs are legendary, offering an exhilarating nightlife scene. Revelers at these clubs can enjoy nightly entertainment, including high-energy circus performances, live acrobatic displays, and appearances by pop culture icons. Beaches in Cancun

There are eleven public beaches in the Hotel Zone. While most resorts in the Hotel Zone are right on the Mexican Caribbean, if your accommodation isn’t waterfront, here are a few great beaches in Cancun.

Playa Delfines : “Dolphin Beach” is an expansive stretch of sand and picturesque turquoise waters. It’s a popular tourist spot known for its scenic views. Playa Delfines is located at the southern end of the Hotel Zone at Blvd. Kukulcán 17, Zona Hotelera , and is one of the few beaches in Cancun that provides free parking. 

Playa Chac Mool: Named after the   Mayan God of Rain, this beach offers amenities such as showers and bathrooms, a real local vibe, and excellent access to the water. Playa Chac Mool is located near Blvd. Kukulcán 10, Zona Hotelera , with beach access near Señor Frogs.

Playa Tortugas: A lively public beach in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, Playa Tortugas has open-air cafes, restaurants, and bars, offering the perfect spot for vacationers to relax and enjoy the local scene. Playa Tortugas is located at Blvd. Kukulcán 6, Zona Hotelera . This beach is near the ferry terminal that will take you to Isla Mujeres, a great day trip option discussed below.

Cancun Restaurants

Cancun’s culinary scene is as vibrant as its nightlife. If you’re craving it, you’ll probably find it—dining options in Cancun range from traditional Mexican cuisine to seafood, Italian, Asian, Mediterranean, and more. You’ll find restaurants with beautiful water views, outdoor dining, live music and performances, and entertainment.

Taboo Cancun is an upscale restaurant offering Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. They have an extensive list of cocktails and champagnes, which can be enjoyed amidst nightly performances by saxophonists and violinists.

Carajillo Cancun features a fusion of Mexican and international cuisines, with standout dishes such as grilled octopus, baby back ribs, and rib-eye tacos. You can also enjoy hookah, gorgeous sunsets, and outdoor waterfront dining.

El Granero Grill is an open-air restaurant offering a cozy, intimate environment. They offer tacos, burritos, burgers, steaks, and a full bar. It’s a hidden gem, excellent for an enjoyable informal night out.

Isla Mujeres (Day Trip)

Most vacationers to Cancun opt for an Isla Mujeres day trip. Isla Mujeres is a short 8-mile boat or ferry ride from Cancun. There are several ferry terminals, but if you’re staying in the Hotel Zone, you’ll want to catch the ferry at Playa Tortugas. Boat operators will also take you on a private cruise to Isla Mujeres . Most include a stop for snorkeling near the MUSA Underwater Museum along the way.

Isla Mujeres, translated to “Island of Women,” has beautiful beaches to relax on, beach clubs, opportunities for snorkeling and swimming with Whale Sharks, and a sculpture park and lighthouse. You can also rent a golf cart or bicycle to explore the island.

Mayan Ruins (Day Trip)

A day trip from Cancun to the Riviera Maya offers an enchanting escape into the heart of ancient Mayan civilization, where history and tropical beauty blend seamlessly. Sites like Tulum , perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, offer breathtaking views and a window into the past with its well-preserved temples.

For a change of scenery from the hotel pool, head to Playa Tortugas. This is a favorite Cancun beach for families with young kids because of the small waves, the shallow water, and lots of activity.

There’s bungee jumping from a nearby tower, volleyball courts, snorkeling, and more. Beachfront restaurants and lounge chairs dot the sand, allowing parents to enjoy the view while kids play.

Another popular beach outside the hotel zone is Playa Delfines. The beach offers free umbrellas, so bring towels and secure a spot early!

Lifeguards monitor the beach during the day, offering an extra set of eyes for parents. There aren’t restaurants on the beach, so bring your own snacks or try something from one of the local vendors selling food along the beach.

2. Swim with Whale Sharks in Cancun

You can usually find whale sharks in Cancun’s warm waters from mid-March to mid-September. One of the most unforgettable things to do in Cancun with kids is to swim with these gentle giants! This is a perfect activity when visiting Cancun with teens and older kids.

Just be prepared, because the trip from Cancun to Cozumel starts with an hour-long car ride followed by a 45-minute ferry (that can be quite choppy if it’s a windy day). But if you have a chance to go snorkeling at El Cielo Beach, take it!

El Cielo is located on the southwest side of Cozumel and is famous for its resident sea stars and sting rays. The shallow waters are crystal clear, too, offering prime viewing for snorkeling tours! One of the best-known eco-adventure parks in the area is Xcaret Cancun , an eco-archaeological theme park with over 50 attractions. And while you don’t need the kids to have a great time here, this park is definitely one of the top things to do with kids in Cancun. There are challenging adventures for older kids and entertaining areas dedicated to younger children as well.

Xcaret is an amazing experience, being a water park, theme park, and an eco-archaeological park in one! Plan on spending an entire day here.

You’ll go on a snorkeling tour, swim in underground rivers, and visit archaeological sites. There are also traditional Mayan performances, animals, food, and a nighttime light show. Something for the entire family!

But did you know that Xcaret has 8 different unique theme parks in Cancun and the Riviera Maya?

There’s also Xel-Ha , a family-friendly water park in Riviera Maya. Xel-Ha Park is popular for its diverse water slides, but that’s just the beginning! You can go snorkeling in coves and cenotes, cliff jumping, or ziplining, or take on a kid-friendly obstacle course. There are manatee and stingray encounters as well as scuba activities. It’s a full day of adventure for everyone.

Xplor  is located right next to Xcaret but focuses more on exploring the underground. Visitors can zip-line, ride in amphibious vehicles, swim in underground rivers, and try spelunking. At night the park transforms into Xplor Fuego with fun adventures like zip lining in a hammock and swimming on a lava stream!

Our favorite Xcaret tour is Xenotes . This one is definitely better for older kids with an adventurous streak. Visitors will zip line, jump from cliffs, kayak, and swim in cenotes. This is one of the best tours in Cancun for families!

10. Explore Mayan ruins near Cancun

Most of the Mayan ruins are a long drive from the hotel zone, so I recommend visiting with older children. Chichen Itza is a popular archaeological site, being one of the most well-preserved sites.

You can take a guided tour of Chichén Itzá , just over 2.5 hours driving from Cancun. Here you will learn about the ancient Mayan civilization while touring this UNESCO World Heritage site.

My family also explored the Coba ruins with kids, and let’s just say scaling the pyramid is not for the faint of heart! The ruins are about 2.5 hours from Cancun and it’s easy to book a tour through Viator or your hotel.

Another option is to explore the Mayan ruins at Tulum , about 2 hours from Cancun. The setting of Tulum is stunning, a walled Mayan site majestically overlooking the sea. Go early, walk the Tulum ruins, and spend some time relaxing at the beach.

Need to stay close to the hotel zone or don’t want to rent a car? Across from Playa Delfines are the El Rey ruins. There’s a small entrance fee and it’s worth the stop. You’re free to roam the archaeological park and you’ll probably see some wild iguanas!

11. Zipline at Selvática

One of my favorite ways to explore Cancun is on an outdoor guided adventure, and that’s what you get at Selvática. You’ll see the rainforest from the canopy while you challenge your courage with zipline courses, rope bridges, off-roading tours, cenotes swims, and more!

Have you gone ziplining before and think you’ve seen it all? Not this one. Selvática’s 10 different courses include an Aquazip where you’ll get soaked, a zipline coaster, and a “superman-style” zipline! Plus, it’s perfect for everyone in the family ages 3 and up (8 and up for ATV tours).

When you book your tour , it includes lunch reservations at the park. And you can choose to upgrade for transportation to and from Cancun.

12. Have an ATV or Jeep Adventure

Several companies offer a chance to get off the beaten path with an ATV jungle or beach adventure. These typically take place in the jungle landscape of Cozumel and can involve anything from a simple tour to a full-day experience.

This Jeep tour takes visitors off-roading through the jungle before taking a snorkeling tour of the world’s second-largest reef.

If ATVs are more your speed, there are several companies offering jungle tours through the palm trees with opportunities to see caverns and cenotes along the way.

Another option is to take a tour of some of the better-known Cancun cenotes , like Dos Ojos, Cenote Azul, and Gran Cenote. Be sure to bring water shoes for hiking and swimming.

14. Try All the Food

Sampling local food is the perfect way to elevate your family trip to Cancun, especially when you have kids of all ages in tow! Children can be picky eaters, but Mexican cuisine offers a wide range of options, from mild to spicy, so they can find something they love.

When you explore Cancun’s culinary scene with your kids, you’re introducing them to the flavors and traditions of Mexico. Taking a Cancun street food tour or a Mexican cooking class is an excellent way to do this.

Adjacent to La Isla, Kukulcan Plaza caters to a range of budgets and offers shops selling clothing, jewelry, and traditional Mexican souvenirs. 

If you prefer designer brands like Louis Vuitton, Rolex, and more, head to Luxury Avenue. This high-end shopping center is popular for its beautiful setting and variety of high-end retailers.

A popular mall in Cancun is Plaza Las Americas. It boasts a mix of local and international stores, a food court, and an entertainment center. Plus, there are a few different locations you can check out in downtown Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

16. Play at Parque Las Palapas

After a low-key day eating and shopping off-site, spend your afternoon relaxing in downtown Cancun at Parque Las Palapas. This popular city park is a gathering place for visitors and locals alike.

There are cheap food stalls along one side of the park, as well as covered picnic tables. Little ones will enjoy the playground.

You might stumble upon a local event or concert happening during the summer, or just come to enjoy live music and street performers. It’s also a great place to pick up souvenirs from vendors selling handmade items.

17. Learn at the Interactive Aquarium

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Cancun with kids during the rainy season, the Cancun Interactive Aquarium in the Hotel Zone.

With your admission, you’re able to interact with sea stars, manta rays, and other sea creatures. The whole family will have a great time at this small but high-quality aquarium.

There are hands-on exhibits, floor-to-ceiling habitats, and fun shows. The staff at the Interactive Aquarium is welcoming and ready to answer any questions your kids have. Exhibits are in both English and Spanish. And for an additional fee, you can add on experiences like dolphin encounters and sea treks.

18. Croco Cun Zoo

Animal lovers can also visit a local zoo to learn about Mexican wildlife at Croco Cun Zoo You’ll find this hands-on wildlife sanctuary located just south of Cancun.

It’s one of the best things to do in Cancun with kids and the perfect place to get up close and personal with a variety of animals, including crocodiles, monkeys, and birds.

When you visit Croco Cun Zoo, you’ll see the sanctuary through guided tours where you can learn about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts.

Some of the best things to do in Cancun with kids can in fact be found at the fabulous all-inclusive resorts in Cancun for families. After staying at several, I feel confident recommending the following resorts:

Exploring Monterey on a dime

A frugal traveler puts the California county, known for its exclusive towns and fancy golf courses, to the test, combining stunning nature with low-key hotels, small businesses and a few splurges

My first view of Monterey Bay on California’s Central Coast was thrilling — a raft of 40-something sea otters — and free. The next time I would get close to them, at the Monterey Bay Aquarium , it cost nearly $60. That split between free access to outdoor wonders and investment-grade attractions epitomized my experience in the area.

Like so much of coastal California, the Monterey Peninsula, home to famous Pebble Beach golf courses and exclusive towns like Carmel-by-the-Sea (known simply as Carmel), connotes wealth. It is encompassed by Monterey County, a roughly 3,300-square-mile area, which includes Big Sur, where accommodations at luxury resorts like the Post Ranch Inn start at around $1,500 a night.

With a budget of less than half of that for three days, I put Monterey — the town and the county — to the frugal test. In January, a quiet and thrifty time of year, I trusted parks and preserves, unsung hotels and small businesses to keep things economical, even if sampling the variety of Monterey — ranging from historic cities to redwood forests, tide pools and vineyards — required renting a car ($175).

Seeking Steinbeck

My introduction to Monterey, John Steinbeck’s 1945 classic novel “Cannery Row,” describes its waterfront lined in sardine canneries as “a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream.” It’s hard to find that gritty romance along today’s Cannery Row , which boomed in the 1930s and ’40s, before overfishing killed supply.

Now chains such as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Sunglass Hut replace “weedy lots and junk heaps,” though a central plaza with bronze sculptures of Steinbeck and some of his characters pays tribute to the past.

Still, the spirit of the book’s protagonist, Doc — a marine biologist based on the real-life scientist Ed Ricketts — lives on at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is housed in the former Hovden Cannery. At $59.95 for admission, the aquarium is a worthy splurge, offering opportunities to encounter creatures large, small, wondrous and rare.

“We bring the ocean to people to inspire them with things they might not get to see otherwise,” said Madi Frazier, an aquarium naturalist, as she guided me to a kelp forest modeled on the one found just beyond the bayfront building’s glass walls.

A wing devoted to deepwater ecology held bright red bloody-belly comb jellyfish, stringy bioluminescent siphonophores and 4-foot Japanese spider crabs that inched along in the gloom. A dune-style aviary offered opportunities to observe a normally skittish red knot at close range. Bat rays glided beneath tentative fingers in shallow touch tanks.

A few blocks away, Katie Blandin named her 5-year-old cocktail bar Pearl Hour after “the hour of the pearl,” described in “Cannery Row” as “the interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself.”

We met during happy hour — 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday — when classic cocktails such as the Corpse Reviver No. 2 go for $10 (normally $13). Blandin plants the bar’s back patio in succulents, flowers and herbs, many of which make their way into her cocktails.

“I think even a cocktail should have a sense of terroir,” she said.

Old Monterey

The oldest part of Monterey — an outpost of Spain and then Mexico dating back to the 17th century — lies just over a mile south of Cannery Row in a pedestrian-friendly downtown where signs flag historic adobe buildings.

Among several modestly priced hotels there, I booked the Hotel Abrego , where my $130-a-night room included a Keurig coffee machine and spacious glassed-in shower. Its $20 nightly resort fee, included in the room total, covered parking, a hot breakfast buffet and a glass of wine.

It was easy walking distance to lively Alvarado Street, lined in restaurants and shops. A 19th-century complex, the Cooper Molera Adobe , includes an orchard, barn and house museum (free) behind its walls, and the Alta Bakery and Cafe , where I sipped coffee ($3) on the tranquil patio.

Down the block, Ad Astra Bread Co. sells aromatic loaves of sourdough ($10 each) from Ron Mendoza, the former pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Aubergine in nearby Carmel.

“For the last five years, some of our leading chefs have abandoned fine dining and opened artisanal food businesses,” said Deborah Luhrman, the editor and publisher of the food magazine Edible Monterey Bay , who recommended both bakeries.

The brewpub Alvarado Street Brewery was buzzing when I stopped in for a quinoa bowl ($16) and a Mai Tai tropical IPA for $8. Nearby, my favorite cheap find, El Charrito Express , served substantial barbacoa wraps stuffed with marinated beef, beans and rice for $6.99.

Chancing it in Carmel

From the outset, it felt like a losing bet to take my penny-pinching budget to chic Carmel-by-the-Sea, the 1-square-mile seaside town where actor Clint Eastwood was once mayor.

Even getting there comes at a price: 17-Mile Drive , the coastal scenic route, costs $12 to drive. Fortunately, it’s free to cyclists, which helped take the edge off the cost of the bike I rented to explore some of Monterey’s celebrated cycling routes .

From the bike shop Mad Dogs & Englishmen in Monterey, I rented an electric bike ($40 for four hours) to assist in the long ride — about 28 miles round-trip — and its hills. The deal included free valet parking for my car at the adjacent Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

On a cool January morning, frothy aquamarine waves broke on the granite rocks that barricaded the coast, tempting me to stop every half-mile or so to admire their churn. A thick fog blew in as I reached the area’s renowned shorefront links, dramatizing their sand bunkers and wind-shorn cypress trees. I passed a landscape painter and jaw-dropping Pebble Beach mansions before coasting into Carmel.

Amid luxury retailers like Tiffany and Bottega Veneta I found the new Korean restaurant Jeju Kitchen in the outdoor Carmel Plaza . My salmon rice bowl was not cheap at $26, but it was delicious, substantial and only a few dollars more than food truck options at the Carmel Farmers Market across the street.

Monarchs, redwoods and waterfalls

It was far easier to stretch my budget seeking nature in Monterey, home to 99 miles of coastline.

I started at the 2.4-acre Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary , where mature Monterey pine trees attract overwintering butterflies that are known to cluster in groups of up to 1,000 from November through February (free).

Using binoculars, I spied bright orange monarchs catching early-morning rays from the tips of pine boughs like mini-solar panels. A pair of deer grazed in the shade below while a set of acorn woodpeckers chattered in the treetops. The abundant bird life drew the attention of two red-shouldered hawks, which glided in silently.

Continuing south along the coast, I spent a sunny afternoon at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve (admission $10). The craggy headland has been the setting for classic Hollywood films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca,” and attracted photographers Edward Weston and Ansel Adams .

The reserve, which has a special conservation status within the state park system, was created by a land donation to protect its cypress grove, according to Kathleen Lee, the executive director of the nonprofit Point Lobos Foundation , which supports the park with fundraising and docent training. In a phone interview, she directed me to the forest, noting that it is “one of only two native Monterey cypress groves remaining in California.”

Atop vertiginous cliffs, a trail wound bravely through the wind-sculpted trees. Below them, harbor seals appeared in the backwash of coves. A short drive south, I scrambled over wet rocks at Weston Beach — named for the photographer — to find tide pools filled with sea stars, anemones and hermit crabs.

Waning light chased me from the park as I set out south, eager to make the drive down famously curvy Highway 1 in Big Sur before dark. The rugged coast of towering redwoods and mountains that plunge into the ocean was named El Sur Grande , or the Big South, by Spanish colonizers as an unmapped wilderness.

Twenty-two miles south of Point Lobos, Ripplewood Resort got its start when the highway was being built in the 1920s. I booked a rustic but comfortable cabin there for $135 a night and woke to find it ideally located just a few miles north of Big Sur Bakery , a beacon of artisanal baking that seemed impossible in such a remote location (a cheddar-and-chive scone cost $5.50).

Ripplewood also lies close to a series of coastal parks, including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park , where the 4-mile Buzzard’s Roost Trail ascended amid redwoods to ridge-top ocean views (admission, $10, good at all state parks for the day). Nine more wiggly miles south, McWay Falls cascades onto a pristine beach at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park . Between them, I stopped at frequent turnouts to scan for migrating gray whales exhaling telltale spouts.

A safari and a tasting

The survival of southern sea otters in California is a comeback story. Hunted nearly to extinction for their thick pelts, sea otters managed to hang on in the most remote coves and crags of Big Sur, where a few individuals were discovered in 1938. Now numbering about 3,000, the endangered marine mammals are some of the most charismatic residents in the Central Coast’s kelp beds.

They also thrive in Elkhorn Slough , a coastal wetland preserve in Moss Landing, about 27 miles north of Monterey. There, I boarded an electric catamaran from Monterey Bay Eco Tours to troll the calm waters on a 90-minute cruise ($45).

Within minutes, we spotted harbor seals hauled out on muddy banks shared by marbled godwits, black-necked stilts and whimbrel, some of the park’s more than 300 species of birds. Mother otters fed their babies sea cucumbers, gave them swimming lessons and carried sleeping pups as they floated on their backs.

“Elkhorn Slough is a low-stress environment for them,” said Cindy Rice, a naturalist guide leading the tour.

The drive to my last stop — Monterey’s vineyards — took me through the agricultural flats surrounding Salinas, which grows 70 percent of the nation’s salad greens, some 20 miles to the Salinas Valley , which nurtures pinot noir and chardonnay grapes in the foothills of the Santa Lucia range.

Attracted by vintage tractors, I turned into the family-owned Rustiqué Wines and found its convivial tasting room lodged in a former dairy barn filled not with hushed aficionados swirling and evaluating wine, but with a sociable crowd enjoying glasses of estate pinot noir and oaked chardonnay in the spirit of happy hours everywhere.

Winemaker Chad Silacci and two other family members worked the bar and the crowd. The winery, established in 2006, has built a following through concerts, events and warm hospitality (tastings cost $20, waived with a two-bottle purchase).

“We want it to be comfortable,” Silacci said, indicating the tasting room’s sofas and chairs arrayed around a wood-burning stove. “It’s kind of like walking into our family’s living room.”

I finished an earthy pinot, thinking the investment, like so many in Monterey, paid unanticipated returns.
