Boat Review: Invincible 40 Catamaran

Boat Review: Invincible 40 Catamaran

In my youth, sleep did not come easily on the night before a fishing trip. Now, decades later, on the eve of my Fish Trial of the Invincible 40 Catamaran, I felt the same nervous excitement.

The crew from Invincible Boats —Bill Cordes, Tim Gallagher, Jonathan Lipworth and Zack Powell — had hatched an ambitious plan to depart from Key West at sunrise bound for the Dry Tortugas some 60 miles due west, fish the deep ledges just south of this remote outpost, then return in the afternoon.

Such a trip often requires an overnight stay to provide sufficient fishing time, given the relatively long transit. But Team Invincible was bent on proving that one-day adventures to distant waters are imminently possible, provided you have the right boat. For this reason, an increasing number of anglers are considering big, powerful catamaran hulls, and Invincible is on the leading edge of the cat craze.

Room to Roam

As Sport Fishing Group Publisher Scott Salyers and I stepped aboard the 40 Cat in the gray light of dawn on that warm, clear morning in early June, I was immediately struck by the immense aft cockpit afforded by the 12-foot beam. Interior width measured more than 11 feet wide by 5 feet 4 inches long. Our crew of seven would have plenty of room to maneuver here without bumping into each other in the event that we experienced multiple hookups. (Spoiler alert: We did.)

Loaded with ice and provisions, we headed out from the marina at the Ocean’s Edge Resort on Stock Island. As we left the no-wake zone, Gallagher accelerated through the narrow, meandering channel. The 40 Cat banked gracefully inward while turning at speed.

Pete Morrelli of Morrelli & Melvin, the Newport Beach, California-based marine architectural firm that designed this running surface, credits the semi-asymmetrical cross-sectional design of each sponson for the comfortable handling. “This asymmetric shape allows the boat to lean inward while cornering, versus cat hulls with symmetric cross-sections that tend to turn flat or lean outward in turns,” Morrelli explains.

On the Atlantic side of Key West, Capt. Veach pointed toward his pinfish traps on a shallow flat. We idled into 2 feet of water to pick up the traps. The Cat easily floated and motored about in the shallows without touching bottom. With 26-inch-tall gunwales in the aft quarters, it was fairly easy to reach the traps using a short gaff. We transferred the bait into the twin pressurized 55-gallon transom livewells. We also used the 72-gallon livewell under the aft cockpit sole for several blue runners caught the day prior.

Boat Review: Invincible 40 Catamaran

Gallagher motored out to deeper waters, turned the 40 Cat westward, and punched the throttles of the quad Mercury 350 Verado outboards. The double-stepped hull lifted onto plane quickly, and within 10 seconds reached a cruising speed of 55 mph at 5,000 rpm, where the quad 350s burned 60 gph for 0.91 mpg.

Using computational fluid-dynamic computer software, the design team at Morrelli & Melvin, which specializes in catamarans, tested lots of running surfaces before actually building this Invincible, Morrelli says. “This allowed us to refine the design of the twin steps to maximize speed and efficiency,” he explains. Morrelli & Melvin is one of the few firms that utilizes such software, which was originally developed by NASA, for recreational hull designs.

Calm winds and a slight west swell did not pose much of a challenge for this boat on test day. Yet as we crested the wakes of passing shrimp boats, I gained of sense of its seakeeping ability, which is different than that of a V-hull.

“Notice that there is very little bow‑to-stern rocking motion and virtually no deceleration when meeting the waves, as you might experience with a V-hull,” Gallagher points out. A pod between the sponsons helps split the water that rushes between the hulls to further soften the ride. All of this results in a high level of crew comfort, whether seated at the helm, in the aft foldout jump seats or in the forward console seat.

Twin flush-mounted Garmin GPSMap 8617 (17-inch) multifunction displays help guide the way offshore. The 40 Cat’s center console melds with the hardtop thanks to integral, powder-coated aluminum uprights, which frame the thick acrylic windshield and side windows that protect the helm.

My test boat came with a leaning-post-style helm seat with tackle stowage underneath and room for three people, but you can option this boat with three-across bucket helm seats with fold-down armrests and flip-up bolsters. Abaft the helm seats is seating for three in an aft-facing bench.

Time to Fish

We reached our first fishing spot — a hard-bottom ledge in 165 feet of water 60 miles from Key West — in a scant 80 minutes. With the historic Fort Jefferson barely visible to the north, Veach took over the helm to zero in on the hot spot. Powell walked forward to the massive anchor locker in the forepeak. The 40 Cat characteristically carries its wide beam all the way to the bow, and this affords plenty of foot room aside the console and the extra‑large coffin box on the foredeck.

The optional 960-quart coffin box is super wide with dividers inside to separate cold-storage items. Each side of the box is lined with seven vertical rod holders, and the top doubles as a padded lounger.

Just minutes after the boat settled back on the anchor, I was hooked up. As I battled the fish, I appreciated the coaming pads that completely encircled the interior to cushion my legs. A 15-pound mutton snapper soon rose from the depths and was deposited on ice. The 40 Cat has plenty of room to keep fish: two fish boxes below the aft cockpit — 268 gallons to starboard and 414 gallons to port — and two 158-gallon boxes forward. I also found two 8-foot-long dry lockers forward.

The action accelerated throughout the morning; nonstop catching highlighted by a number of multiple hookups. From amberjack, black grouper and blackfin tuna to kingfish, mahi and mutton snapper, this deep ledge produced a cornucopia of game species.

After three hours, we experienced a slight lull in the action, and Veach decided to try a new spot in 170 feet of water about 2 miles from the first. While en route, we cleaned up the deck using the freshwater washdown (there’s also a raw-water washdown) fed by an 82-gallon freshwater capacity. Veach quickly found the second spot using the Garmin GSD26 chirp fish finder, and action turned full speed again for another three hours.

Numbers Game

By 3 p.m., everyone’s arms were too sore to pull on any more fish, and so we headed back. By 4:15 p.m., we were off Key West, where we paused to collect performance data on the cat with the real-world load of seven crewmembers, 400 gallons of fuel, 45 gallons of fresh water, 500 pounds of fish, 300 pounds of ice, and 180 pounds of livewell water. Even with this load, the four Verado 350s propelled the 40 Cat to 30 mph in 8.7 seconds and rocketed to a top speed of 71 mph at 6,400 rpm, while burning 138 gph for 0.51 mpg.

Best fuel efficiency occurred at 3,500 rpm and 33 mph, where the quad outboards burned 32 gph for slightly over 1 mpg, resulting in a cruising range of more than 600 miles.

However, as indicated earlier, the beauty of this boat lies in its ability to reach distant fishing spots quickly and return home the same day. So you’ll probably want to run well above the 33 mph, up toward 55 or 60 mph.

If the prospect of such trips keeps you up at night with nervous excitement, perhaps you need to think seriously about adopting this big, fast cat.

Why the Invincible Boats 40 Catamaran is A Top Pick for Luxury Fishing

Meet the game changer in fishing boats.

When the Invincible Boats 40 Catamaran was launched in 2017, it wasn’t just another entry into the market; it was a statement. This vessel redefined luxury fishing by combining top-tier design with unparalleled functionality, offering a seamless experience for anglers and pleasure cruisers alike. Its exceptional handling in various sea conditions is a game changer, making every journey, whether close to the shore or out in the deep sea, a smooth and enjoyable one. The introduction of this catamaran has opened up new horizons for fishing enthusiasts, highlighting that luxury and efficiency can coexist seamlessly on the water.

The Brains Behind the Boat

The distinction of the Invincible 40 Catamaran largely lies in its design, conceptualized by the renowned design firm Morrelli & Melvin. Their hybrid, semi-asymmetrical hull design is groundbreaking, offering a balance between stability, handling, and speed that’s unmatched in the industry. This innovative approach ensures that anglers can reach their preferred fishing spots more efficiently, without compromising on comfort or safety. It’s this blend of performance and practicality that has turned the Invincible 40 into a benchmark in modern boat design, appealing to those who refuse to settle for anything but the best.

What Makes It Special: The Specs

The Invincible 40 Catamaran is impressive not just in its looks or performance but also in its specifications. Stretching over 40 feet and 2 inches with a beam of 12 feet, it provides ample space for both serious fishing and relaxed cruising. It’s capable of holding a substantial amount of fuel—800 gallons, to be exact—making it perfect for those extended trips far from the coast. With an engine capability of up to 1,800 HP, it can slice through the water at remarkable speeds. Its design facilitates 360-degree fishing, thanks to features like an optional side dive door and a flat transom, enhancing its utility and versatility on the water. Additionally, its ability to cover more than 750 nautical miles on a single trip places it in a class of its own, catering to the needs of adventurous anglers who are bent on exploring distant fishing grounds.

Extra Features Worth Talking About

The Invincible 40 Catamaran is loaded with thoughtful features that take the fishing experience to a whole new level. Notable among these is its advanced livewell system, located both above and below the deck, ensuring that your catch remains in prime condition. The storage options are extensive, allowing you to keep your gear organized and easily accessible. The use of high-grade, corrosion-resistant materials across the boat underscores its durability and readiness to face the harsh marine environment head-on. Onboard safety is prioritized through features such as automatic bilge pumps, which offer an added layer of security to occupants, ensuring that you can focus on the fishing without worrying about your wellbeing.

Invincible 40 Cat: 2019 Boat Buyers Guide

  • Updated: January 1, 2019

As a boat buyer, you might be asked, paraphrasing the server at your favorite diner inquiring about coffee sweetener, “One hull or two?”

Invincible’s patented monohull has one of the lowest drag coefficients in its class. On its Open Fisherman and Center Cabin boats, 33 to 42 feet long, an air-fed tunnel produces higher speeds with lower power, plus a more stable ride — all while maintaining supple maneuverability. Designed by naval architect Michael Peters, it’s a fast hull in which passengers stay dry and comfortable, even in rough seas.

Take the best from the Invincible monohull and double it, and you have the firm’s patent-pending catamaran hull, with that design’s additional stability.

Morelli & Melvin, America’s Cup sailing-yacht creators, created the hybrid semi-asymmetric design. The result? Monohull-like maneuverability with comfortable handling in even quartering and following seas.

A pod between Invincible cat hulls splits water to soften the ride, and even with their additional size, the cat fuel economy is comparable to a monohull.

Invincible 40 Cat A big, seaworthy boat that seems to yearn for single-day, as well as multiday, adventures to far-off fishing hot spots, the 40 Cat was Invincible’s first in that format, creating what it called “the most advanced fishing catamaran on the market.”

Seakeeping ability was its original and overriding goal, especially making high-speed turns without drastic throttle reduction. It accomplished that through its game-changing asymmetrical sponsons. The double-stepped hulls lift onto plane quickly, reaching 55 mph in 10 seconds and tops out at over 70 mph when rigged with 350 Verados.

A huge aft deck, with 26-inch-high gunwales and nearly 11½ feet interior width, sets the stage for efficiently fighting multiple fish.

Three livewells — twins of 55 gallons each at transom and a 72-gallon well beneath the cockpit sole — more than meet the two-livewell (93 percent) and big-bait-capacity (61 percent) minimums of survey respondents.

Coaming pads ring the interior to cushion anglers’ legs amid fights. When the battle’s done, the 40 Cat houses the catch in two massive fish boxes below the aft deck, with another pair forward.

Rod-holder and storage options let you create your own fishing boat. Options also include a hardtop, folding tower/dual station or crow’s-nest, three-across helm seat configurations, an aft-facing bench that adds seating for three more, an outrigger, coffin box and more.

Survey Says: On Target

2022 Invincible 33 Catamaran

  • By Randy Vance
  • Updated: October 12, 2021

I used to dis on catamarans. The early designs were soft-riding but wobbled over the seas like a drunken sailor. That’s all different with Invincible’s Morrelli and Melvin hull designs.

The hull-style name is a mouthful. A “hybrid semi-asymmetrical hull” applies the best characteristics of an asymmetrical catamaran with the stable-at-rest and soft-riding behavior of symmetrical cats. Yep, it’s a mouthful. To visualize an asymmetrical catamaran hull, imagine a V-bottom boat sliced longitudinally from stem to stern. Separate those two halves and you have a symmetrical cat with vertical inboard side walls and tapered outside side walls. A symmetrical cat has identical sponsons, tapered equally inboard and outboard. Blending the two styles provides turn-hugging inboard sponson side walls with wave-deflecting outside side walls. As a result, the boat makes sharp turns without awkward outboard heeling, and even in quartering seas, the sponsons stand firm in the slop. In fact, a catamaran design like this runs better in moderate chop, as if the sponsons know they have a job to do and go right to it. Top off the performance package with double steps, which break surface tension and release the hull from the water as bubble streams are introduced under the hull.

Invincible 33 Catamaran running in the ocean

So, the ride is smooth in rough water, stable when trolling at displacement speeds, and it resists rolling in beam seas—all part of a proven formula for passenger comfort and serious fishing.

The 33 can be equipped with up to 900 hp, making a pair of Mercury Racing 450R engines top the horsepower heap. With the dual Verado 400s, we made nearly 62 mph with a 6.6-second hole shot, and a quick 11 seconds to 30 mph. I would expect nearly comparable results from Mercury’s newer V-8 300 hp platform.

Invincible 33 Catamaran helm

Interior and Accessories

The helm station comes from Invincible’s 36, and the three-wide station seating from the 35 cat. The centered helm keeps the skipper’s mates at each elbow. The leaning-post seat is bolstered for three comfortable seating or leaning stations. A step below the helm adds comfort while standing or seated. The station itself offers massive room for dual 20-inch (or larger) screens—in our case, a 9-inch VesselView, an Icom VHF and a Fusion stereo controller. The hardtop stretches wide and aft of the leaning post, keeping the helm glare-free.

Inside the helm, there is ample room for a plumbed head, but the bonus besides storage is spacious access to the back of the instrument panel for maintenance and easy access to batteries, switches and breakers—best of all, they are logically and artfully wired.

But the 33 shines when you stop to fish.

Start with dual livewells. An oval well with a clear acrylic lid in the transom is 65 gallons, pressurized and fed from a sea chest in the starboard sponson with three pumps. There’s also a larger 65-gallon livewell belowdecks in the starboard sponson, so live-baiters can carry and coddle hundreds of baits.

Invincible 33 Catamaran cockpit

The fighting cockpit is impressively spacious, taking full advantage of the 10-foot-3-inch beam. To port of the transom livewell is a pair of drawers ideal for tackle, ropes, or wash and wax supplies.

A 33 cat is ideal in size for many needs but rare as hens’ teeth on the market. Insetta makes a 35-foot cat with asymmetrical hulls. Sighting down the centerline beneath, you’ll see the vertical sponson walls, but if it’s in the water, you can’t see the hydrofoil spanning from sponson to sponson. The purpose is to give lift, reduce drag, and add stability and comfort to the on-plane ride. Topside, its beam is 5 inches wider at 10 feet, 8 inches, and though the length and beam are larger than the Invincible, somehow Invincible makes the cockpit feel larger.

The center console comes from Invincible’s 35 cat, giving the three-wide seating at the helm and mezzanine. Yet it nests in the deck, preserving wide walkways fore and aft while providing the amenities of the larger vessel.

The mezzanine seat (back of the leaning post) is three-wide, and the seating angle is designed to lean back even when the boat is on plane. Pull the seatback down, releasing the magnetic catches, and three compartments hold four more rigging drawers, three utility boxes and a tool stowage area. Not enough storage? No problem. Cabinets on the port and starboard sides of the leaning-post seat hold utility boxes, drawers and leader hangers.

Four larger fish boxes in the floor can alternatively be used for fenders. They pump out with durable “gulper” pumps instead of temperamental macerators. Two large dry lockers flank the anchor locker at the bow.

Invincible 33 Catamaran forward lounge

And the final jewel in the Invincible’s spaciously featured fishing and touring machine? A dual lounge sits forward of the helm, with thick cushions, deep bolsters, armrests and handy cup holders. Beneath it? You guessed it—an insulated coffin box that can be opened up for a fish box, divided for preserving iced food, or just used as dry storage.

Invincible’s great ride and spacious deck make it a formidable fishing machine, but one that casual cruisers will be eager to enjoy for long hours on the water.

How We Tested

  • Engines: Dual Mercury 400 Verados
  • Drive/Prop: Mercury Enertia Eco 16″ x 18″ stainless-steel propset
  • Gear Ratio: 1.75:1 Fuel Load: 50 gal. Water on Board: 0 gal. Crew Weight: 600 lb.

High Points

  • Forty-seven rod holders arrayed in gunwales, the transom, and the leaning post and center console.
  • Mezzanine seating converts to a tackle station with spacious storage, including compartments to port and starboard of the leaning post.
  • Foredeck houses an anchor locker flanked by two large storage compartments for fenders.
  • Wraparound bow seating would be a nice option for added comfort.
  • Side boarding door would be a nice addition to this design.
