Just before this year’s boat shows in Miami, I had the chance to run the Tiara Sport 38 LS, part of a new ­series of outboard-powered vessels from the Michigan boatbuilder. The weather was blustery with spattering rainstorms dimpling Biscayne Bay’s gray chop. It wasn’t great boating weather, but it was great conditions for boat testing.

My test vessel was special because it unveiled a new propulsion package representing a partnership between Volvo Penta and Seven Marine. The optional helm-to-prop system combined Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) with Seven Marine’s beastly 527 hp 6.2-liter V-8 outboard ­motors. Seven Marine brings the horses while Volvo Penta offers DuoProp drives and an amalgam of its “Easy Boating” features, including a Glass Cockpit System, joystick control, dynamic positioning and Easy Connect remote connectivity. (Triple outboards from Yamaha and Mercury ranging from 300 to 400 hp apiece are also available.)

The combination of the DuoProp system with the muscular motors is designed to push the ­growing ­series of monster center-consoles ­coming to market with more efficiency at all speeds. The setup also reduces cavitation, further enhancing performance, according to the manufacturers.

The 38 LS handled the sloppy conditions in Florida well. A hardtop and single- pane windshield provided shelter from the elements, protecting the three bolster-style helm seats as well as the seating at the after end of the console.

I spent most of my wheel time running the 38 LS at her 30-knot cruise speed, where her range is 276 nautical miles. The boat sliced through the confused 2- and 3-footers while gripping tightly to the bay’s surface during S-turns and while turning hard over in about a boat length and change. When I pinned the throttles, the 38 LS shot up to a brisk 46-knot clip, just 2 knots shy of the 48 knots that Tiara Sport says it’s seen her do. It’s a speed that a center-console in today’s market needs to attain to stay competitive.

The 38 LS also has the requisite amenities expected on today’s large ­center-consoles. The U-shaped dining settee at the transom is a good place for alfresco meals, while lounge ­seating in the bow is an ideal spot to hang out with sundowners. A full head is inside the console, and there’s a full-size berth for ­overnights.

The Tiara Sport 38 LS could function equally well as a dayboat or as a ­mega-yacht tender. She has performance-boat speed, a sharp profile and good looks without being overly trendy. She is ­unlikely to go out of style anytime soon.

By way of background, my business interests include controlling stakes in 3 publicly traded companies which operate vessels in the 500 to 5000dwt range. Princess Eugenie

Wedding: October 12, 2018 For her wedding day, Princess Eugenie stepped out into a tiara that she borrowed from her grandmother, the Queen. It was the 93.7-carat Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara which was originally created in 1919 by Boucheron for Margaret Greville, a society figure who was a close friend of Queen Mary. When Greville died, the tiara was passed on to the Queen’s mother.

The Duchess of Sussex

Wedding: May 19, 2018 Meghan also borrowed from Queen Elizabeth’s collection for her wedding day, wearing the Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara which, as you probably guessed, once belonged to Queen Mary. Made in 1932, the tiara has often been seen with a sapphire in the centre stone, but Meghan opted for a diamond, which was lent to her by the Queen Elizabeth. The tiara is formed as a flexible band of 11 sections, pierced with interlaced ovals and pavé set with large and small brilliant diamonds. The centre is set with a detachable brooch of ten brilliant diamonds.

Zara Tindall

Wedding: July 30, 2011 Zara chose a tiara originally belonging to her grandfather, Prince Philip’s mother, for her wedding day. It was a Greek Key Tiara from Princess Anne’s collection (often referred to as Princess Andrew’s Meander Tiara), made up of diamonds and reportedly created by Cartier in the early 1900s.

Wedding: April 29, 2011 This was Kate’s ‘something borrowed’ for her wedding day, lent to her by Queen Elizabeth. Its dates back to 1936, when George VI commissioned Cartier to make this tiara for his wife three weeks before he acceded to the throne in 1936. The Queen Mother gave it to the Queen Elizabeth as an 18th-birthday present. It has 739 brilliant-cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds.

Wedding: May 17, 2008 Autumn tied the knot with Princess Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, in the Festoon Tiara, borrowed from Princess Anne who was gifted the diamond tiara in 1973 by the World Wide Shopping Group, a Hong Kong firm, after she christened one of their ships.

Wedding: May 6, 2006 When Camilla, the Queen’s daughter, Laura Parker Bowles (Will and Harry’s stepsister) married her husband, Harry Lopes, she wore the Cubitt-Shand tiara, a family heirloom that once belonged to Camilla’s grandmother, Sonia Cubitt. Camilla herself wore the tiara at her first wedding to Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973.

Wedding: June 19, 1999 Sophie Rhys-Jones married Prince Edward, the Queen Elizabeth’s son, in 1999 and was gifted this tiara from her mother-in-law, reportedly made from four pieces of one of Queen Victoria’s crowns.

Lady Sarah Chatto

Wedding: July 14, 1994 Lady Sarah, Princess Margaret’s daughter, chose the Snowdon Floral Tiara for her wedding day. The tiara was originally created from three diamond brooches that were a wedding gift from Lord Snowdon to Princess Margaret in 1960. They were turned into a diadem specially for Lady Sarah’s wedding.

Wedding: October 8, 1993 When Princess Margaret’s son, David Armstrong-Jones (known as David Linley) married Serena, she borrowed a tiara from Princess Margaret’s collection, known as the Lotus Flower Tiara. Made of diamonds and pearls, it was given to Princess Margaret by her mother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in 1959.

Lady Helen Taylor

Wedding: July 18, 1992 The Duke and Duchess of Kent’s daughter, Lady Helen, wore the Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara on her wedding day, following in her mother’s footsteps who also wore this on her own wedding day too. The tiara is reported to be a modified version of Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara.

Sarah, Duchess of York

Wedding: July 23, 1986 When Sarah Ferguson married the late Queen’s second son, Prince Andrew, she wore the York Diamond Tiara. The tiara wasn’t from the Queen Elizabeth’s collection but, rather, was a wedding gift from the Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh who commissioned Garrard to create it, along with a matching necklace, earring and bracelet set.

Diana, Princess of Wales

Wedding: July 29, 1981 When Diana married King Charles, she wore a tiara from her family’s collection, called the Spencer Tiara. The tiara was made up of a number of different pieces of jewellery that was altered with new pieces made by Garrard in 1937. The same tiara was worn by Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah and Jane and was also worn by Victoria Lockwood, who married Diana’s brother Earl Spencer in 1989.

Princess Michael of Kent

Wedding: June 30, 1978 While this wasn’t Princess Michael’s actual wedding, she wore a tiara to a celebration post-wedding ball after the ceremony and the Kent City of London Fringe Tiara was her chosen sparkler. The piece was originally given to her mother-in-law, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, by the City of London for her wedding in 1934 and left to her husband when she died.

Wedding: November 14, 1973 On Princess Anne’s wedding to Mark Phillips, she chose Queen Mary’s Russian Fringe Tiara – the same tiara worn by her mother, the Queen Elizabeth, on her wedding day. Princess Margaret

Wedding: May 6, 1960 When Princess Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones, she wore the Polimore Tiara. It was originally created by Garrard in the 1870s for Lady Florence Poltimore. After Margaret’s death, the tiara was sold at auction in 2016.

Queen Elizabeth

Wedding: November 20, 1947 Queen Elizabeth wore Queen Mary’s Russian Fringe Tiara on her wedding day, created by in 1919 by Garrard, this can be worn as a necklace too. The tiara actually broke on the Queen Elizabeth’s wedding day but thankfully the court jeweller was standing by in case of emergency and it was rushed to his workroom under police escort and speedily repaired.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother

Wedding: April 26, 1923 The Queen’s mother wore the Strathmore Tiara for her bridal portraits, which was given to her as a wedding gift from her father, the Earl of Strathmore. The floral piece was purchased from Cathpole and Williams and the flowers can be removed and worn as brooches. In the Twenties, the trend was to wear tiaras low across the forehead, as seen here. It’s not been worn since and remains in the Windsor vaults.

One of the many hallmarks of Queen Elizabeth II ’s reign has been the vast collection of extravagant tiaras she’s worn over her 70 years on the throne.

Many of the queen’s tiaras have been in the British royal family for more than a century, with some headpieces commissioned by the queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, from the House of Garrard.

Two of the queen’s most frequently worn tiaras were passed down to her by her grandmother: the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara, which Queen Elizabeth II is seen wearing on certain issues of British banknotes, and the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, which the queen wore to her wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.

While the queen, who turns 96 today, generally sticks to a few tiaras from her collection, she’s lent out several pieces to her granddaughters and granddaughters-in-law, including Princess Eugenie; Princess Beatrice; the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton ; and the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle , all for their royal weddings over the last decade.

Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara

Queen Mary lent her granddaughter, then Princess Elizabeth, her fringe tiara made by the House of Garrard in 1919 for her royal wedding to Prince Philip in 1947. The tiara features 47 delicate bars of diamonds.

According to the House of Garrard, the tiara snapped on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s wedding as she was getting ready for the ceremony. A police escort transported the tiara to the jeweler’s workshop where it was mended just in time for the wedding.

Queen Elizabeth II has gone on to wear the tiara frequently throughout her reign. She also lent the tiara to her daughter Princess Anne for her wedding in 1973 and her granddaughter Princess Beatrice for her royal wedding in 2020. 

Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara

The Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara is one of the queen’s most recognizable headpieces, as she’s frequently seen wearing the tiara. The diamond tiara was purchased by Queen Mary’s ladies-in-waiting as a wedding gift in 1898, according to the House of Garrard. Queen Mary later gave the tiara to her granddaughter as a wedding gift in 1947.

While the queen did not wear the tiara on her wedding day, she has regularly worn the piece throughout her reign and is seen wearing the tiara on certain issues of British and Commonwealth banknotes.

The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara

The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara is another of the queen’s most frequently worn pieces. The tiara was commissioned by the Duchess Vladimir in 1874 from the Romanov court jeweler, Bolin, and was smuggled out of the country after the duchess fled St. Petersburg during the Russian Revolution in 1918, according to Town & Country.

The duchess’ family later sold the tiara after her death in 1909 to Queen Mary, who had the tiara altered so that emeralds or pearls could be added to the piece as desired. Queen Elizabeth II later inherited the tiara from her grandmother upon assuming the throne and has regularly worn the piece throughout her reign with emeralds or pearls and without additional jewels.

The State Diadem

The State Diadem has been in the British royal family since 1821 when it was made for King George IV’s coronation. After his death the diadem was passed to Queen Adelaide, consort of King William IV, who made it tradition for female monarchs to wear the piece, according to the Royal Collection Trust.

The diadem was passed down to Queen Elizabeth II, who wore the headpiece on the way to her coronation at Westminster Abbey in June 1953. The queen continues to wear the diadem on her way to and from every State Opening of Parliament.

The State Diadem is made with more than 1,000 diamonds — including a 4-carat yellow diamond at the center — and roughly 170 pearls.

Lover’s Knot Tiara

Queen Mary commissioned the Lover’s Knot Tiara in 1913 to the House of Garrard, and the piece has since become one of the most recognizable tiaras of the British royal family. The tiara was often worn by the late Princess Diana and is frequently seen on the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton .

The tiara was created with 19 baroque pearls and rose-cut diamonds, which are set in a series of heart-shaped knots.

Queen Elizabeth II gifted the tiara to Princess Diana as a wedding present, which the princess wore on multiple occasions, including a visit to Hong Kong in 1989. Princess Diana later returned the tiara to Queen Elizabeth after her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996.

Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara

Queen Mary’s Bandeau Tiara was created in 1932 from a brooch she received in 1893 by the County of Lincoln for her marriage to the future King George V. The tiara was designed with a flexible band of 11 sections with pavé-set diamonds. The center brooch includes 10 individual diamonds. Queen Elizabeth II received the tiara when her grandmother died in 1953.

The queen lent the tiara to the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, for her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

Cartier Halo Tiara  

King George VI, the queen’s father, commissioned the Cartier Halo Tiara in 1936 for his wife just shortly before he assumed the throne. She gifted the tiara to Queen Elizabeth on her 18th birthday. The tiara is set with 739 brilliant and 149 baton diamonds, according to the Royal Collection Trust.

The queen lent the tiara to the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, to wear at her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

Burmese Ruby Tiara

Queen Elizabeth II commissioned her Burmese Ruby Tiara to the House of Garrard in 1973, using rubies that were given to her as a wedding gift by the people of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma).

The rubies are extremely rare and were banned in the U.S. starting in the early Aughts as part of President George W. Bush’s continued sanctions on Myanmar for its military regime. President Obama later lifted these sanctions and its subsequent ban on the rubies in 2016.

According to the House of Garrard, the 96 rubies in the tiara have a symbolic meaning as in Burmese culture, the stones are said to protect against evil and illnesses.

Given the supposed meaning, the queen made headlines in 2019 when she wore the tiara during a state dinner with then-President Trump at Buckingham Palace.

Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara

The Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara was created in 1919 by Boucheron for Margaret Greville, a well-known socialite who left her jewels to Queen Elizabeth’s mother upon her death. The tiara takes its style from those popular in Russia’s Imperial Court in the early 19th century. It is made with rose-cut pavé diamonds set in platinum and features six emeralds, with the central stone sizing at 93.7 carats.

The queen lent the tiara to her granddaughter Princess Eugenie for her royal wedding in 2018.

Delhi Durbar Tiara

The Delhi Durbar Tiara was made in 1911 for Queen Mary to wear for King George V’s succession as King Emperor of India. The tiara was originally set with 10 large emeralds, but they were later removed in 1922 for other uses.

Queen Elizabeth II acquired the tiara after her mother’s death in 2002. She has since lent the tiara to her daughter-in-law, the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles.

The Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara  

Queen Elizabeth II commissioned her Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara from the House of Garrard to match a diamond and aquamarine earring and necklace set that the people of Brazil gifted her for her coronation in 1953.  

The Sapphire Tiara

The queen commissioned her sapphire tiara in 1963 to match a set of diamond and sapphire earrings and a necklace given to her by her father for her wedding.
