• Marinas tend to get quite busy during peak summer months, so you need to consider that when deciding on what night's you wish to spend in a slip. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard. 
• Mistrals are quite common during the shoulder months of May and October, so check with your charter broker about the best anchorages and itineraries if you intend on traveling during these months.
• You should also be aware that certain zones in Sardinia's waters are restricted to protect the sea grass, which may impact on where you anchor the yacht. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter on Italy's west coast only a short hop across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Alternatively, charters can begin on the spellbindingly rugged island of Croatia in the north, separated only by a narrow strait famed for its sailing.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

Sardinia has a unique heritage dating from 4000 BC - including the Phoenician sailors, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Saracen raiders, Spaniards, and African Berber pirates, famines survived on wild ferns and weeds, kidnappings, and political subversion. Much of this history is apparent from remnants and influences on the coastline and can be seen from your boat. Sardinia has strong traditions in darts, football, and car racing. Sassari has the Mores Raceway and Cagliari has hosted Formula 3000 racing. Olbia has hosted the Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the FIA World Championship - held on narrow, twisty mountainous roads around the glamorous town of Porto Cervo.

Of course sailing is big here! Cagliari hosts regular international regattas, such the RC44 championship, the Farr 40 World championship, and the Audi MedCup. Several America's Cup contenders have been attracted here, and part of the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in the Maddalena archipelago in 2010. Porto Pollo is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers by virtue of a western wind that accelerates between Sardinia and Corsica. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup.  Sa Istrumpa, also known as Sardinian Wrestling, is a traditional Sardinian sport, officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Day 1 Olbia

Olbia, in close proximity to the airport, is in the heart of Sardinia and is the perfect starting point for a Sardinian charter holiday. Olbia has a historic centre where you can venture out to discover Romanesque architecture, authentic Italian cuisine, museums, wine bars, and unique boutiques. Some Olbia must-sees include the Basilica of San Simplicio, the Church of San Paolo, the remains of the 2-3AD Aqueduct, and the Nuraghe Riu Mulinu Cabu Abbas.

Day 2 Tavolara

The monumental island of Tavolara is most beautifully observed from the sea. The sheer grandeur of this granite massif rising dramatically from the sea will leave you in awe. This 565-meter-high limestone massif is located a mile from the coast and has many nearby anchoring spots. Day 3 Cala Brandinchi

Day 4 Romazzino

Day 6 Lavezzi

The next region is in French Territory: the islands of Lavezzi, known to the locals as Lavezzu. The ancient granite formations feature concealed coves and isolated beaches that are beautiful places for sun-soaked relaxation. There are also unique sites to explore, such as the Lavezzi lighthouse that overlooks the rugged cliffs, or the shipwrecked Sémillante – a 54-metre frigate that was caught in a storm in the winter of 1855.

Day 7 Portisco

The enchanting port town of Portisco has lots to offer beyond its breathtaking scenery. Guests can indulge in local flavours at traditional trattorias as they walk around the vibrant marina, lined with stylish cafes and shops, that offers a balanced blend of seaside sophistication. Despite their fierce, remote beauty, the Maddalena islands offer some fine restaurants and your Captain will be happy to advise you on where to go!

Beyond the Maddalenas are the uninhabited  Lavezzi Islands,  technically part of Corsica but easily included on a Sardinia yacht charter. The giant grey granite rocks of the Lavezzis frame beaches of blinding blue water, while yellow-horned poppy flowers clamber over this barren, bewitching landscape. The snorkelling and diving off the Lavezzi is exceptional, with colonies of giant grouper, schools of barracuda, and red gorgonian fans aplenty.

Sardinia has other beautiful, fascinating islands in the north, such as the mountainous island kingdom of  Tavolara  which has its own king (who doubles as a restaurant owner), and the tiny island of  Asinara , an abandoned high-security prison island that is now populated by a 250-strong herd of miniature albino donkeys. If you’re cruising the south, the pretty island of  Isola di San Pietro  enchants with its quiet cobbled streets, clifftop lighthouse, and Ligurian dialect.

Picnic and play on beaches straight out of a dream

The beaches of Sardinia are some of the best in the world, with glimmering blue-green waters and sugar white sands. Sardinia’s coastline is more than a thousand miles long, and the beaches are as diverse as the island, from the breathtaking cliff-lined coves of the  Costa Smeralda  in the north to the incredible desert landscapes of the  Torre dei Corsari  on the western coast, where shifting sand dunes up to 70m high tower above the sea. For gently rolling sand dunes covered in pretty wildflowers and sea grasses, cruise to  Capo Camino  or  Santa Lucia  on the east coast or  Chia  or  Teulada  in the south, while those looking for a laid-back beach club scene should head to  San Teodoro  just south of the Costa Smeralda, with its long sandy beaches and pink flamingo lagoons.

Purpose-built by the Aga Khan in the 1960s, the ultra-exclusive village of  Porto Cervo  is all pastel stucco and archways overlooking the sea, with high-end hotels and fine restaurants lining the cobbled streets. Porto Rotondo  is another upscale town at the southern end of the Costa Smeralda, with a luxury marina, fine dining restaurants, designer boutiques, and a gorgeous piazza and church. Dine on a pool terrace under stone archways at  Stella di Gallura , or take a veranda table overlooking the water at  Lu Stazzu  to enjoy an authentic Sardinian feast of suckling pork, pasta, and fresh-caught seafood. These fairy tombs can be seen near the coast at  Alghero  and in cliff faces in the mountains, while the best example of nuraghic ruins is the UNESCO-world heritage site at  Barumini,  north of Cagliari.

Waves of conquerors ruled Sardinia after the Nuraghic people, with Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans leaving their mark on the island, with the ancient Punic and later Roman town of  Nora  an excellent example of amphitheatre, temple, and baths.

Stroll Ancient Cities and Pretty Fishing Villages

If you can drag yourself away from Sardinia’s beaches, the cities and towns have an enormous amount to offer visitors.

Beautifully restored  Alghero  on the north west coast is a highlight of any Sardinian yacht charter, with its Catalan architecture and historic centre, while the spectacular  Neptune’s Grotto  is found on a cliff-face nearby, accessible only by yacht or by a dizzyingly steep stairway cut into the rock. Slightly further south is the splendid river town of  Bosa , palm trees and pastel buildings lining the water, while a short cruise away is the charming town of  Stintinto  with its pretty harbours full of fishing boats and stunning  La Pelosa   beach . Also in the north west, the brightly painted medieval village of  Castelsardo  sits above the gulf of Asinara, its castle ruins a place of epic beauty high up on the crag above the town.

Cagliari , the capital in the south, is undergoing a cosmopolitan revolution, with wine bars and boutique hotels popping up across this ancient Italian city of palazzos and shady piazzas, with the walled Castello quarter providing astonishing views across the water.

La Maddalena  islands are considered some of the best dive spots for a Sardinia yacht charter, with giant boulders covered in corals and the marine reserve creating a haven for large groupers, barracuda, octopus, eels, and spiny lobster.  Costa Paradiso  in the northwest is also very good indeed, and  Capo Caccia  near Alghero has a superb tunnel and cave network stretching over 350m. On the east coast,  Cala Gonone  provides WWII wrecks and interesting underwater terrain, while  Santa Maria de Navarrese  is the home of a bomber plane and some great boulders, caves, and red coral. If you’re venturing into the south, the  Gulf of Cagliari  offers some fantastic WWII wreck dives, including the  Romagna , which was sunk by a mine in 1943 and the large warship, the  Isonzo . For ancient history buffs, the  Gulf of Teulada  hides remnants of Roman shipwrecks, while just off the shore at  Nora  is where scuba divers can find the marble floor of the ancient flooded port, as well as a sunken Roman highway leading out to sea.

To the south of Porto Cervo is the excellent marina and resort of Porto Rotondo - a lot more laid back and relaxed than Porto Cervo, this is a great charter destination in its own right. South again, you will reach Olbia, home of the island's main airport and another excellent marina, Marina di Olbia from which you may begin your sailing vacation exploring northern Sardinia. Further south again are charming resorts like Cala Gonone with many beautiful sandy beaches and quite stunning scenery with the high mountains a short drive from the coast.

On a longer yacht rental you can get as far as the Aeolian Islands off Sicily or the Amalfi Coast on the Italian mainland.

Types of Luxury Yacht charter

Weather conditions in Sardinia:

Luxury yacht charters are best when augmented by great weather. The perfect time for a premium charter in Sardinia are:

Early Season (May to June): The NE maestrale from the Rhone Valley may cool the region a bit and the seas are cooler after winter. Sea temperatures can be 15 degrees C but air temperatures can touch the comfortable low 20s.

Peak Season (July and August): Sea breezes will make for great sailing but it can get very hot with temperatures into the 40s. There will be little in the way of rain, but you will be grateful for any in the heat.

Late Season (September and early October): The sea is going to be warm - in the 20s C - yet the air cools down to the high teens and 20s, making for a great time for a swim! Winds - notably the maestrale - can pick up and you may find it rains more too.

When to Visit Sardinia

Sailors will enjoy the Solaris Cup out of Porto Rotondo in late May/early June. Out of Porto Cervo the annual Lora Piana superyacht regatta in June blasts around the La Maddalena Island group - something you may be able to participate in on a luxury sailing yacht with a dedicated racing captain to perhaps even go for Line Honours!

July and August are when the marinas are at their busiest and most expensive. It is very crowded, even out on the islands. Most of the social events are at their best at this time of year though and the buzz is a good one.

For those after a quieter time after the crowds have gone, try to visit Sardinia in September. The seas are bath-warm still and the sun is comfortably - not fiercely - warm. Though many shorreside establishments close, it can be a more authentic side to Sardinia.

Suggested itineraries

On your luxury yacht or superyacht you can enjoy the best of north Sardinia, southern Corsica and nearby islands.

Day 1 Depart Marina di Olbia and head for Porto Rotondo for your first night on the Emerald Coast.

Day 2 Spending an afternoon at Isola Mortorio, head for Porto Cervo for the next night ashore.

Day 3 After an evening enjoying the entertainment, and perhaps a morning enjoying the shopping head for La Maddalena Island.

Day 4 A longer sail this time, off to the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. These are quieter and some say, as beautiful as the Sardinian Islands you’ve just left.

Day 5 Spend the day on the Pontine Islands before heading Corsica to the west, landing at Porto Vecchio.

Day 6 Get another fix of shopping and fun at Porto Cervo.

Day 7 return the luxury charter boat to base at Marina di Olbia.

Luxury Marinas Sardinia

There are many marinas along the east coast of Sardinia to enjoy.

Marina di Olbia is closest to the regional airport and can accommodate luxury yachts.

The main types of boats that people rent on a luxury yacht charter are Sailing Yachts, Motor Yachts, Sailing Catamarans, Power Catamarans, Gulets, Superyachts (21 metres plus boats) and Megayachts (40 metres plus boats).

Your first step is to decide how many guests you will have onboard, your location preference and your desired dates. Once you have decided on the basics you can speak to a yacht broker who will organize a detailed itinerary based on where you are travelling and your preferences.

Wherever your imagination takes you, there are yachts berthed in popular locations such as The Bahamas, Maldives, New England, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. But you can also take you on farther afield excursions such as Antarctica, the South Pacific and the wilds of Alaska, it just depends on what type of sailing vacation you want to do.

Yes, all charter companies will require a deposit to book a yacht. This is often refundable if you make cancellations or changes over ninety days in advance. But read the cancellation policy and consider trip insurance if booking inside the cancellation window.

Your party size determines the size of luxury yacht to book, so get a headcount before you look. You may also wish to explore the locality before transferring back home. The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Your charter rate will include the rental of your luxury yacht and its equipment, together with the services of its captain and all crew. The vessel will be properly insured against all marine risks. Additional fees not covered in the charter rate include: VAT, marina fees, local taxes, harbor fees, canal fees, fuel charges, electronic communications, provisioning and any other bespoke extras required. If you choose to embark at a different port to the yacht's home location, then you can expect to pay for delivery and/or return fees and expenses.

Luxury yachts are generally charted at a minimum for one week. You can typically charter a yacht for as long as you want, the only limiting factor is generally the yacht's availability.

The size of your yacht will determine how many guests are allowed onboard. There are no minimum amount of guests but most bookings will be between 2 to 8 guests with the maximum amount of guest being usually around 12 but this can be larger on some types of boats

We will discuss all your transfer and onboard requirements when you make your booking and will send you a comprehensive questionnaire to complete. We will also contact you just before your charter begins to ensure all your preferences and individual requirements regarding dietary preferences, medical conditions, allergies have been covered. This also includes your requested activities - including toys - entertainment and offshore excursions.

Usually guests are covered under the yacht owner's own liability policy for damage, however we recommend taking out Charter Liability insurance as an extra buffer. Should you or your guests accidentally damage any interior fixtures and fittings, the hull or tenders/toys then you will be fully protected.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
