Dramatic shipwreck of the Benetti yacht Domani: the video
A 45-metre yacht at the mercy of the waves, inexorably taking on water with seven frightened people on board awaiting rescue. They are rather dramatic images of the shipwreck of the Benetti yacht ‘ Domani ‘ , which last Saturday 7th May at seven o’clock in the morning local time ran into serious trouble while about 25 miles off Grays Harbor, along the Washington coast. The video, shot by US Coast Guard men and posted on Twitter , shows the distressed condition of the luxury motorboat as it is being rescued. Fortunately, there are no injuries among the seven people on board at the time of the shipwreck.
According to reports from the US Coast Guard, due to a technical problem the crew was unable to close the stern door; as a result, water flooded into the beach club, i.e. the lower part of the yacht. Shortly afterwards, the yacht’s crew also found smoke and activated the engine room fire extinguishing system, causing a blackout and loss of propulsion. To maintain communication with the coast guard, the crew used the yacht’s emergency batteries.
The yacht ‘Domani’ was delivered in 2004 and is part of the Benetti Vision series. The exterior design was by Stefano Righini, while the interior is by Zuretti

'No medical concerns' after 45m Domani disables 45-miles offshore
After passing the strait of juan de fuca, domani will be towed to a shipyard in port angeles, where it will undergo repairs….

At roughly 07:00 on the morning of Saturday the 7th of May, the 45m Benetti motoryacht Domani was disabled 45 miles north of Grays Harbour in Washington. Although seven people were on board, no injuries or medical concerns have been reported as of yet, however, the US Coast Guard did state that the incident was caused due to flooding of the beach club and the crew being unable to close the transom door.
The motor yacht is now being towed to a shipyard in Port Angeles where it will undergo the necessary repairs and insurance checks. The question now being asked is exactly what led to such an unlikely and bizarre occurrence. Both the REG Yacht Code and MI Yacht Code require that openings in the yacht's shell doors ‘May be manually closed and locked in the event of power or hydraulic failure’.
Providing the incident wasn’t a result of human error, an event such as this could spark review and debate on the leniency of regulations and seaworthiness of the current fleet. If the regulations allow for a manual hydraulic pump then it could be worth speculating whether or not the right hydraulic pressure had been maintained, or if there were perhaps any impurities in the hydraulic oil. Another angle to consider is whether the transom door was open before or after the yacht departed from the harbour - if the door was opened prior to departure then damage sustained while underway would provide a more obvious reason as to why the crew were unable to close it.

LinkedIn user Eddie Cashman commented on a post highlighting the incident saying, “ I've been on a Bennetti where we sometimes couldn't close the stern door under the power of it's own hydraulic system. The captain would rig a line from a capstan to a cleat on the door while I operated the hydraulics and sure enough, the thing would get up enough that the hydraulics would do the rest of the work.”
In the same thread, Cashman continued, “It only happened once to me but several times to the captain meanwhile the door was operated a huge amount of times. Hard to find the error from an outside perspective when it's hidden amongst many successful operations, particularly when the surveyor or whoever may arrive at a closed door, see it open, close then complete the check. It seems like the similarity of this incident and my own was a sea day where the beach club was open for an extended period, which would further exclude an outside perspective. Up to the crew to report the issue and who knows, Bennetti might know about the issue, wouldn't surprise me.”
Whatever the reason may be for this incident, the most important thing is that the crew are safe and the coastguards acted quickly and efficiently enough to resolve the issue and tow the yacht to a shipyard. Fortunately, no medical or pollution concerns were reported.

Positive Customer Review: "One of the most memorable parts for me was the launch. I went with my wife, and Benetti had a Roman Catholic priest bless the yacht. It was very beautiful with all the Italian music and then the British national anthem, and it was all very unexpected. I thought I was just going to be putting the boat in the water, but in fact it turned into a very emotional day!" - Owner of a Benetti called motor yacht 11:11

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, a guided-missile cruiser that became a potent target of Ukrainian defiance in the opening days of the war, sank Thursday after it was heavily damaged in the latest setback for Moscow’s invasion.
Ukrainian officials said their forces hit the vessel with missiles, while Russia acknowledged a fire aboard the Moskva but no attack. U.S. and other Western officials could not confirm what caused the blaze.
The loss of the warship named for the Russian capital is a devastating symbolic defeat for Moscow as its troops regroup for a renewed offensive in eastern Ukraine after retreating from much of the north, including the capital, Kyiv.
In his nightly video address to the nation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alluded to the sinking as he told Ukrainians they should be proud of having survived 50 days under attack when the Russians “gave us a maximum of five.”
Listing the many ways Ukraine has defended against the invasion, he noted “those who showed that Russian warships can sail away, even if it’s to the bottom” of the sea. It was his only reference to the missile cruiser.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the ship sank in a storm while being towed to a port. Russia earlier said the flames on the ship, which would typically have 500 sailors aboard, forced the entire crew to evacuate. Later it said the blaze had been contained.
The Moskva had the capacity to carry 16 long-range cruise missiles, and its removal reduces Russia’s firepower in the Black Sea. It’s also a blow to Moscow’s prestige in a war already widely seen as a historic blunder . Now entering its eighth week, the invasion has stalled amid resistance from Ukrainian fighters bolstered by weapons and other aid sent by Western nations.
During the first days of the war, the Moskva was reportedly the ship that called on Ukrainian soldiers stationed on Snake Island in the Black Sea to surrender in a standoff. In a widely circulated recording, a soldier responded: “Russian warship, go (expletive) yourself.”
The Associated Press could not independently verify the incident, but Ukraine and its supporters consider it an iconic moment of defiance. The country recently unveiled a postage stamp commemorating it.
The news of the flagship overshadowed Russian claims of advances in the southern port city of Mariupol, where Moscow’s forces have been battling the Ukrainians since the early days of the invasion in some of the heaviest fighting of the war — at a horrific cost to civilians .
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Wednesday that 1,026 Ukrainian troops surrendered at a metals factory in the city. But Vadym Denysenko, adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, rejected the claim, telling Current Time TV that “the battle over the seaport is still ongoing today.”
It was unclear how many forces were still defending Mariupol.
Russian state television broadcast footage that it said was from Mariupol showing dozens of men in camouflage walking with their hands up and carrying others on stretchers. One man held a white flag.
Mariupol has been the scene of the some the war’s worst suffering. Dwindling numbers of Ukrainian defenders are holding out against a siege that has trapped well over 100,000 civilians in desperate need of food, water and heating. David Beasley, executive director of the U.N. World Food Program, told AP in an interview Thursday that people are being “starved to death” in the besieged city.
Mariupol’s mayor said this week that more than 10,000 civilians had died and the death toll could surpass 20,000, after weeks of attacks and privation left bodies “carpeted through the streets.”
Mariupol’s capture is critical for Russia because it would allow its forces in the south, which came up through the annexed Crimean Peninsula, to fully link up with troops in the Donbas region, Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland and the target of the coming offensive.
The Russian military continues to move helicopters and other equipment together for such an effort, according to a senior U.S. defense official, and it will likely add more ground combat units “over coming days.” But it’s still unclear when Russia could launch a bigger offensive in the Donbas.
Moscow-backed separatists have been battling Ukraine in the Donbas since 2014, the same year Russia seized Crimea. Russia has recognized the independence of the rebel regions in the Donbas.
The loss of the Moskva could delay any new, wide-ranging offensive.
Maksym Marchenko, the governor of the Odesa region, across the Black Sea to the northwest of Sevastopol, said the Ukrainians struck the ship with two Neptune missiles and caused “serious damage.”
Russia’s Defense Ministry said ammunition on board detonated as a result of a fire, without saying what caused the blaze. It said the “main missile weapons” were not damaged. In addition to the cruise missiles, the warship also had air-defense missiles and other guns.
The Neptune is an anti-ship missile that was recently developed by Ukraine and based on an earlier Soviet design. The launchers are mounted on trucks stationed near the coast, and, according to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, the missiles can hit targets up to 280 kilometers (175 miles) away. That would have put the Moskva within range, based on where it was when the fire began.
Launched as the Slava in 1979, the cruiser saw service in the Cold War and during conflicts in Georgia and Syria, and helped conduct peacetime scientific research with the United States. During the Cold War, it carried nuclear weapons.
In 1989, the Slava was supposed to host a meeting off Malta between Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and U.S. President George H.W. Bush, but gale-force winds moved the talks to the docked cruiser Maxim Gorky.
On Thursday, other Russian ships that were also in the northern Black Sea moved further south after the Moskva caught fire, said a senior U.S. defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal military assessments.
Before the Moskva sank, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, told AP its removal would mean “we can only have a sigh of relief.”
While the U.S. was not able to confirm Ukraine’s claims of striking the warship, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan called it “a big blow to Russia.”
“They’ve had to kind of choose between two stories: One story is that it was just incompetence, and the other was that they came under attack, and neither is a particularly good outcome for them,” Sullivan told the Economic Club of Washington.
Russia invaded on Feb. 24 and has lost potentially thousands of fighters. The conflict has killed untold numbers of Ukrainian civilians and forced millions more to flee.
It has also further inflated prices at grocery stores and gasoline pumps, while dragging on the global economy. The head of the International Monetary Fund said Thursday that the war helped push the organization to downgrade economic forecasts for 143 countries.
Also Thursday, Russian authorities accused Ukraine of sending two low-flying military helicopters some 11 kilometers (7 miles) across the border and firing on residential buildings in the village of Klimovo, in Russia’s Bryansk region. Russia’s Investigative Committee said seven people, including a toddler, were wounded.
Russia’s state security service had earlier said Ukrainian forces fired mortar rounds at a border post in Bryansk as refugees were crossing, forcing them to flee.
The reports could not be independently verified. Earlier this month, Ukrainian security officials denied that Kyiv was behind an air strike on an oil depot in the Russian city of Belgorod, some 55 kilometers (35 miles) from the border.
Associated Press journalists around the world contributed to this report.

Moskva warship sinking: Dramatic photos and video give clues to flagship's fate as Ukraine and Russia tell contrasting tales
Almost a week after the sinking of the Moskva near the port of Odesa, Russia and Ukraine are sticking to vastly different accounts of what happened.
But photos released on social media give clues about the incident and appear to poke holes in the Russian explanation that the Soviet-era flagship of its Black Sea fleet sank in stormy seas after an onboard fire.
Ukraine's version is that it hit the ship in a brazen missile strike which would be one of the highest-profile naval attacks in decades.
Russia disputes this, saying the vessel was damaged after an onboard fire caused ammunition to explode.
The Moskva subsequently sank, it says, as it was being towed in a storm.
But images and video posted on Twitter appeared to show a badly damaged Moskva, with black holes in its side, in calm seas and benign weather.
Pictures of damage 'consistent' with missile attack
Conversely, they fail to provide conclusive proof that the Moskva was struck by two Neptune missiles, as Ukraine insisted on April 14.
However, military experts say the damage shown by social media images is "consistent" with a missile attack.
Retired British rear admiral Chris Parry, a former NATO commander, told the BBC he was sure the damage was caused by a missile strike, rather than an internal explosion, saying he believed the ship was hit "by one or two missiles".
A three-second video, taken from a nearby ship and posted on Twitter, appears to show the Moskva shortly after the attack.
In the video, a tug boat is on the right of the Moskva.
The freeboard section of the ship is badly damaged as smoke billows into the air.
The Moskva looks unstable and is leaning heavily to the left, having taken on water.
Author and ship captain John Konrad tweeted another view of the Moskva, using arrows to show the tug's position.
"[It's] close alongside starboard aft," he tweeted.
"It is also possible the tug is made fast and is pulling the ship astern."
While the loss of the 510-crew warship is seen as a boost for Ukrainian morale, experts do not expect its loss to have a major impact on Russia's invasion campaign.
Stark contrast between new Moskva and blackened remains
Another Twitter post appears to show before and after images of the Moskva, which first entered service with the Soviet navy in 1983 and had seen leaders from Mikhail Gorbachev to Vladimir Putin host world dignitaries onboard.
Russia has not admitted that it suffered any casualties in the loss of the ship.
On Saturday — three days after the initial incident — the Russian defence ministry released video of what it described as the entire crew of the Moskva marching in a parade at Sevastopol, a Crimean port city.
After the demise of the Moskva, the Russian navy will look to the Marshal Ustinov and the Varyag — the only other two ships that have multiple anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles.
Before being renamed Moskva (Russian for Moscow) in 1995 after the fall of the Soviet Union, the vessel was called "Slava" ("Glory").
But the social media images seem to suggest a rather inglorious end to the 39-year-old ship, even if we may never know the true story of its sinking.

What is the significance of Russia’s Moskva warship sinking?
The flagship vessel of the Black Sea Fleet entered service in Soviet times and had been deployed in conflicts from Georgia to Syria.
The Moskva, the warship named in honour of the Russian capital and the pride of the country’s Black Sea fleet, has sunk after a fire on board.
The Soviet-era vessel saw service during conflicts in Georgia, Syria and Ukraine and helped conduct peacetime scientific research with the United States.

It was an inglorious demise for a ship initially christened the Slava, or ‘Glory’.
What happened?
The Russian Defence Ministry says the Moskva was badly damaged by a fire and sank in a storm as it was being towed to port.
It previously said that “a detonation of ammunition” triggered a fire and forced the crew to evacuate.
A Ukrainian official claimed it had struck the Moskva with a Neptune cruise missile after successfully diverting the ship’s radar systems.
The US says it has been able to confirm Ukraine’s claims.
The ship, which would usually have about 500 sailors on board, was thought to be located in the Black Sea somewhere off the Ukrainian port of Odesa at the time of the fire.
What is the significance of the sinking?
The 12,500 tonne Moskva was armed with multiple anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles, and was the only ship of its class in the Black Sea. The two other missile cruisers – the Marshal Ustinov and the Varyag – are deployed with Russia’s Northern and Pacific fleets respectively.
The Institute for the Study of War (IOW) says it was not able to verify that Ukraine had sunk the warship, but the Moskva’s loss – regardless of the cause – was a “major propaganda victory for Ukraine”. In contrast, it was likely to undermine Russian morale, the institute said.
In military terms, however, the loss might not be so significant.
IOW says the Moskva was probably mainly used to conduct Kalibr cruise missile attacks on sites including logistic centres and airfields in Ukraine.
“These strikes have been effective but limited in number compared to airstrikes and ground-launched missiles throughout the invasion and the loss of the Moskva is unlikely to be a decisive blow,” IOW said.
Russian military experts have also played down the sinking’s military significance.
“The ship is really very old. Actually, there have been plans to scrap it for five years now,” Russian military analyst Alexander Khramchikhin told the Reuters news agency.
“It has more status value than real combat value, and in general, had nothing to do with the current operation. It will have no effect on the course of hostilities.”
What is the Moskva’s history?
The Moskva was among a group of ships that the Soviet Union designed in the late 1970s to counter US aircraft carrier groups and provide air defence to Soviet vessels operating in distant oceans.
At the time, they were nicknamed “carrier killers”.
The warship was launched as the Slava from a shipyard in Mykolaiv in Ukraine – then part of the Soviet Union – in July 1979, according to open-source intelligence firm Janes. Commissioned in late December 1982, it was 186 metres (610 feet) long and designed to carry a crew of 476 with an additional 62 officers.
The Slava was the flagship of the Soviet fleet in the Black Sea and was equipped with deck guns, torpedoes and mortars, as well as nuclear weapons during the Cold War. It also had a helicopter deck.
It underwent repairs during the 1990s as the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia’s economy struggled and Ukraine emerged as an independent, sovereign nation.
Renamed the Moskva, President Vladimir Putin, who came to power in 1999, hosted world leaders on board, including then-Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on a 2003 visit to Sardinia.
In 2008, during Russia’s war in Georgia – also once part of the Soviet Union – the Moskva was involved in operations in the Black Sea. The Georgian government said the ship also took part in an attack on the country.
The Moskva briefly took part in a blockade of the Ukrainian navy in March 2014 as part of Russia’s annexation of Crimea .
The following year, it provided air defence for Russian forces operating in Syria.
The Moskva’s sailors were decorated for their service there and in the war on Georgia.
After Russia invaded Ukraine, the ship took part in an attack on Zmiinyi – or Snake Island . In audio widely circulated online, a Ukrainian soldier responds: “Russian warship, go f*** yourself.”
The incident has become a rallying point for Ukraine and the country has just released postal stamps commemorating the encounter.
