Elevate your Experience: An Intro to Bespoke Superyacht Lifts

When it comes to luxury superyachts, every detail counts. Owners and guests expect nothing but the best amenities and ultimate comfort on board. From extravagant interiors to state-of-the-art technology, every aspect of a superyacht is carefully curated to deliver an unforgettable experience. On approaching the design or refit of a superyacht, one often overlooked yet essential element to consider is the superyacht lift. In this article, we explore why owners are in the market for bespoke superyacht lifts and how they can enhance the overall superyacht experience.

A superyacht lift leading to a room with a view of the ocean.

Personalising and Styling your Superyacht Lift

One of the defining characteristics of bespoke superyacht lifts is their customizability. Designed to seamlessly integrate with the yacht’s aesthetic, these lifts can be tailored to match the yacht’s style, materials, and finishes.

One of our latest designs is featured onboard ‘ Here Comes The Sun ’. The team was tasked with building a central bronze and glass elevator from the lower deck up to the sundeck. Through the expertise delivered by Holland Marine Lifts (HML), the true modern-day classic maintains sophistication inside and out, receiving praise from Tim Heywood as a “work of art”.

From sleek and modern to classic and timeless, the options for personalisation are endless. This level of customisation not only enhances the visual appeal of the superyacht but also contributes to a truly immersive and consistent design throughout the vessel.

The Process of Customising Superyacht Elevators

Our process starts with conceptualisation. HML will discuss the requirements to help identify your bespoke superyacht lift needs and preferences. This includes considering factors such as size, weight, and desired design, as well as the location you want to install the bespoke superyacht lift. Once the requirements are clear, our team of naval architects, engineers, and designers will work collaboratively to create a detailed design of your lift. Our experienced team at HML will create 2D and 3D drawings, considering structural integrity, aesthetics, safety, and functionality which will then be presented prior to further development.

As a family business, we’ll take responsibility for delivering unique and creative solutions. We will consider material selection and fabrication to ensure the appropriate materials are chosen for both function and design. Once the individual components are fabricated, they are assembled to create the complete lift structure. This involves fitting the mechanical components such as the hydraulic system, motor, pulleys, and control systems. Upon installation, the bespoke superyacht lift undergoes rigorous testing to ensure proper functionality, safety, and compliance with all regulations. Testing includes load testing, emergency stop testing, safety sensor testing, and operational tests.

It’s important to note that the process may vary slightly depending on the specific requirements of the client and the complexity of the design.

Bespoke superyacht lifts have become an essential addition to modern superyachts, elevating the whole experience for owners and guests alike. By incorporating a bespoke superyacht lift, one can enhance the luxury, comfort, and enjoyment of their superyacht, affirming its status as a true symbol of opulence and refinement on the open waters.

Getting to the bottom of yacht lifts & elevators

Yachting Pages

With thanks to Holland Marine Lifts and  Lift Emotion

With today’s superyachts getting larger and much more elaborate, yacht lifts have become a must-have feature for improving accessibility and movement between decks, as well as in superyacht design, as stunning focal points that link on-board areas in beautiful ways.

Metal Wrapped Glass Lift

Dubbed as lifts or elevators depending on whom you ask, these custom-made gadgets are as beautiful as they are practical. As such, Yachting Pages spoke to experts at Holland Marine Lifts  and  Lift Emotion  to get to the bottom of the latest considerations, trends and challenges in this field.

The uses of lifts aboard a superyacht

When talking of interior lifts, we often first think of passenger lifts, but there are in fact an array of uses for lifts and elevators on board a superyacht, where style and service come first. Passenger lifts, crew lifts, luggage lifts and service lifts, such as a dumbwaiter link all the decks on board, and faciliate the movement of crew, goods and service throughout the yacht.

Yacht elevators in superyacht design

With such discerning clientele, yacht lifts and elevators will certainly be much more elaborate and beautifully designed than those typically seen on shore. As such, design detailing has to be cleverly incorporated as not to compromise on the lift’s functionality, posing many challenges to specialists.

Wieneke van der Starre at Holland Marine Lifts explained, “Luxury superyachts are sailing works of art, there’s no doubt about that. Over the years, superyacht lifts have become more and more integral at the centre of these works of art, satisfying owner demands for aesthetics, technology and functionality.

“At Holland Marine Lifts, we’ve always worked closely with naval architects and interior designers on these installations, but, in past years, we’ve also been asked several times to work with artists; not only visual artists in the traditional sense, but also multimedia artists. In one of our latest projects, we successfully collaborated with a famous French glass artist, which resulted in a lift with an astonishing glass floor. Several of our other lifts are also wrapped with elaborate brass or copper pieces like aboard M/Y Nirvana (pictured above), and last year we designed an owner’s lift in which the floor and back wall were fully animated, which gives the illusion that you are descending to the bottom of the ocean when travelling down, and vice versa on the way up.

“The integration of a lift with art or high-tech novelties can only be successfully accomplished when there is a strong collaboration between both the manufacturer’s engineers, the architects, the yard and the artists. When this collaboration is cohesive, aesthetic craftsmanship and technical mastery unite and stunning results are achieved.”

Glass Lift

Mike Brandt, owner of Lift Emotion added, “Over the years, we have had many strange requests for elaborate elevators, but most of the time these uber-strange requests only come about in the pre-design stages of the vessel. We have had a few concepts created by some young designers, which look more like a ride at an amusement park than an elevator, but we have always created innovative rotating elevators, pop-up elevators, platforms and mast elevators that are as practical as they are beautiful.”

The considerations of installing yacht lifts and elevators on board

When installing an on-board lift or elevator, it’s important that owners consider the basics. First of all, is there enough space? With the average lift door requiring a minimum of 800mm of opening space, a one-person lift simply does not exist, therefore owners need to ask themselves, “Can my vessel take a three to four-person elevator?”, particularly if wheelchair access is required.

Whether for beauty or for work, the elevator will need to be large enough to keep up with the day-to-day passenger and load demands of the yacht, however it’s important to ensure that the lift is kept light enough as to not affect the stability of the vessel. It’s therefore important that design requests are submitted with the initial plans for new build and refit projects, so that all can be calculated correctly.

After seeing images of stunning elevators emerge from the industry’s favourite superyachts, Lift Emotion explained that there has been a recent increase in demand from smaller vessels whose owners now want to have elevators installed on board. Elaborate orders have now also become more prolific, although the costs of these are often not always fully understood by the client before entering into design talks.

Lift design is always most dependant on the space and cost limitations set out by the client, and the finished look influenced by class and material choice. Mike explained, “One of the biggest challenges in designing elevators for superyachts is that there is always a lack of space to meet official free spaces, as per elevator rules. This means that special safety devices and solutions need to be thought about in detail to make a safe and reliable elevator.

“Most of the time, you will not want a traction-driven elevator installed on board a superyacht due to there being too much moving weight. Although larger companies tend to use the system used on most land lifts, we know this will not allow crew to do basic maintenance and trouble-shooting on board, therefore proving costly in the long run with emergency call outs.

“All yacht lift and elevator suppliers must work to the needs of the notified bodies, and designs must be based around the European directive EN81 to ensure each is as safe as possible.”

Pushing the boundaries with superyacht elevators

Opulent design international believe we could soon see elevators emerging through the hull structure underwater…….

Image for article Pushing the boundaries with superyacht elevators

The world's first designer and supplier of bespoke carbon fibre lifts for the superyacht industry and high-end residential market recently received its first maritime order having been commissioned to supply carbon fibre lift interiors for a vessel in Florida.

The ultra-lightweight lifts are constructed for Opulent Designs International in the UK by carbon fibre specialist Supernatural-X at its 10,000 square metre facility. They will then be shipped to Holland Marine Lifts BV in Rotterdam for assembly and onboard installation.

The CEO of Opulent Designs, Alister Bennett explained the unique selling point to SuperyachtNews, “A typical steel shaft installation might weigh 400Kg whereas a carbon-fibre shaft could be just 15Kg! These can be installed section by section too, being easily manhandled, whereas steel shafts are normally lowered in by crane. We do expect the cruise ship industry to commission carbon-fibre lifts too and are working with residential architects in the Middle East and Europe on confidential projects. The compactness of carbon-fibre cabins and shafts is also appealing for the yacht market since it frees up more valuable deck space for living. Another point, we are looking closely at bronze and mirrored finishes being applied directly to the carbon-fibre shaft avoiding the need for an extra layer of cladding."

A fully operational Opulent Designs carbon fibre lift is also being installed at Holland Marine Lifts’ own facility this spring as a working showcase for superyacht builders, designers and project managers. As well as a huge weight saving – Opulent Designs’ lift cabins and shafts can weigh up to a twentieth of their steel counterparts – another big advantage is the flexibility that carbon fibre construction allows designers. Virtually any feasible design is possible and the strength of the material (typically five times stronger than steel) makes for less bulky shafts, keeping usable living spaces on all decks as large as possible.

Opulent Designs International is working with a number of designers and craftsmen – including renowned Silverlining Furniture, Shamsian and Taurini – to showcase examples of potential finishes for lift cabin interiors. This is of course a very niche product in a very niche industry, but the company have identified a space where they can excel and become trailblazers. The future of elevators on luxury vessels may be more exciting than many would have previously expected.

best superyacht elevators

Bennett explained, “With Opulent Designs International’s research into linear lifts, the possibilities of a lift cabin ‘popping up’ through a deck hatch, to keep a low profile when not in use, are available now - with investment in engineering and working with a Classification society. Emerging through a hull structure is more our creative people brainstorming of what would be fun (imagine taking a guest in the lift after dinner and descending underwater to see the sea life lit up through watertight sealed glass doors!) and would be more challenging given the water pressure and dynamic loads involved. Theoretically, it is achievable but we don’t expect to receive a request in the immediate future!"

Different operating mechanisms may be used to allow for lift cabins to 'pop up' through a hatch, appearing on an otherwise flush deck, and eventually – for the owner who dares to push the boundaries and with Classification Society and Flag State approval – emerge through the hull structure underwater. Some stakeholders would argue that the boundaries of safety and classification have been pushed far enough, while others would argue the case for creativity and innovation in an exuberant market. "Opulent Designs has already had preliminary investigative discussions with DNV and we were impressed by their receptiveness and openness to innovation.

Bennett continues, “Ultimately it would be a question of working with both Class and Flag State for a particular, individual lift project, along with the superyacht designers of course. Together with Holland Marine Lifts and Supernatural X (renowned for work with McLaren) we expect to lead the market in carbon-fibre lifts and to be accepted by the industry in the coming 12 months, after our first two installations (in build now) are proven."

Roys Rise yacht glass elevators are the solution for yacht designers and mega yacht manufacturing companies looking to meet the highest expectations of their clients. Roys Rise is an all-inclusive custom elevator company based in Southern California that designs custom yacht elevators from start to finish. Super yacht elevators are becoming more popular, and the demand for them is rising as the number of millionaires are growing. Mega yachts are built with the finest materials and designed with exquisite detail; don’t you think they need a lift that is just as luxurious? Roys Rise’s knowledge of the necessary elements of the design and construction process enables us to work with your existing plan or to develop a solution for your specific project. For example, a custom elevator that provides guests with wheelchair access is a popular feature requested by many charter clients and buyers, making a yacht with such capabilities the desired choice if chartering it out or a great asset when a yacht is on the market. However, considering that the size and weight of a lift for a yacht is a significant factor when it comes to the design, a standard elevator company is unable to meet these requirements with their cookie-cutter models.

The Best Superyacht Charter Itineraries in the World

A list of the best charter superyachts from top brokers and handpicked itineraries that make the most of open seas.

By Samantha Coles

Maltese Falcon

Spending so much time indoors has us itching to get back out into the world: to explore, to visit beloved destinations, to make new memories, and to reunite with friends and family. A superyacht  charter is arguably one of the safer ways to travel the world, and also one of the most fun. We’ve looked at the best charter yachts from the top brokers and handpicked itineraries that really make the most of the open seas, and vessels that have such an extensive list of amenities, toys and special features that you might not ever feel the need to go ashore.

[See also: Inside Flying Fox, the Largest Private Charter Superyacht in the World]

Maltese Falcon

Virgin Islands

One of the most head-turning and instantly recognizable yachts on the water, Maltese Falcon (pictured above) has won more than 18 awards since her launch in 2006. She has all the qualities of a sailing yacht but with the huge spaces and luxuries typically found on a motoryacht, and is one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. Her interior, designed by award-winning firm Ken Freivokh Design, is sleek and modern, and features a vibrant art collection. She has spacious deck areas (the VIP cabin looks out on its own deck space), and the deck can transform into an outdoor cinema by night. There is also an outdoor dining table, Jacuzzi, card and playroom area, large office, interior formal dining room, circular bar, gym and spa area. Of course, her most striking feature is her three carbon-fiber rotating masts with 15 sails, which can all be fully controlled via a computer system. This pioneering system means she is simple and safe to sail at speed while maintaining stability, and has contributed to her winning a slew of prestigious superyacht sailing regattas throughout her history.

Where to go

Even though the US Virgin Islands are just 1,000 miles from Miami, the spellbinding natural scenery, abundant marine life and secluded spots make it feel like another world. Spend a relaxing eight days sailing around the main islands of St Thomas, St John and St Croix, dropping anchor in isolated bays. Beginning in St Thomas, sail to Magens Bay in the Northside region to spend a lazy day on the nearly mile-long sandy beach, or try out one of Maltese Falcon’s many watertoys (laser sailing dinghies, stand-up paddleboards and anti-jellyfish sea pool, to name a few).

The Best Luxury Hotels With Private Yachts

Next you’ll visit Lovango Cay, a small private island between St Thomas and St John. If you want to venture ashore, the island has exceptional walking trails, or drop anchor just north of the island, one of the best spots for snorkeling in the USVI — keep your eyes peeled for nurse sharks. Journey on to Francis Bay, a protected area on St John. The waters surrounding the island are a hot spot for marine life (look out for sea turtles, tropical fish and coral reefs) and, as 60 percent of the island is occupied by the Virgin Islands National Park, St John feels as if it is far removed from civilization.

You’ll also visit Round Bay and Rendezvous Bay on St John — secluded spots that are ideal for spending days out on the water. Explore by tender or jet ski, or fish for your dinner from the shore and have an alfresco dinner in Maltese Falcon’s outdoor dining space. Sail on to St Croix, where you’ll visit Buck Island Reef National Monument. The island has an abundance of wildlife both above and below the ocean, and you can drop anchor at the historic St Croix Yacht Club in Teague Bay to watch the sunset and have the most scenic movie night on the upper deck.

Formosa has traversed the globe with her owner / ©Thierry Ameller

Despite her young age, Formosa is a seasoned traveler: Her intrepid owner took her on an around-the-world tour two years ago, and she has been on the move ever since. Available for charter in Southeast Asia this winter, she is as well-suited to shorter jaunts as she is long, relaxing vacations. The owner’s suite is on the upper deck and has its own study and private terrace; the two VIP cabins on the main deck both have marble en suites; the two double cabins and one twin are on the lower deck. A glass elevator connects the decks.

Formosa’s interiors, by award-winning Dutch yacht design studio Sinot, are fresh and subtle with a few choice pops of color; her exterior spaces are built to enjoy warmer climes. The spacious sundeck has a hot tub and bar, and the observation deck is a private haven strewn with bright orange sofas and daybeds. The upper deck has alfresco dining space and a sky lounge that can be converted into a cinema room, and the swim platform makes for easy access to the ocean to play with her long list of toys: jet ski; kite surfing equipment; slide; inflatable climbing wall; canoe kayak; wake, ski and knee boards; banana boat; and a host of fishing equipment.

Thailand has some of the most beautiful islands in the world, and in this weeklong suggested itinerary from Fraser, you’ll see the best of the Andaman Sea from Formosa’s inviting decks. Begin in Phuket, the largest Thai island, and visit stunning beaches — each one offers something different, from the secluded Nui Beach to the lively atmosphere at Patong Beach.

Cruise through Phang Nga Bay, famed for its karsts (limestone cliffs), then south to Ko Phi Phi Don. This is a good spot for scuba diving — or hop in a kayak and explore the quieter bays and caves. Next on the agenda is Koh Ngai. It’s officially part of Koh Lanta National Marine Park, so you can expect picture-perfect beach scenes. The neighboring islands form a triangle, making it easy to island-hop, and the rocky islets of Koh Ma, Koh Chueak and Khon Kaen have great snorkeling sites.

Sail on to Koh Muk, home to the Emerald Cave — it is as magical as it sounds. A gorgeous lagoon surrounded by tropical plants lies just beyond the cave, and between the hours of around 10am and 2pm, the sun shines on the lagoon’s waters and reflects on the tunnel’s walls — resulting in a shimmering emerald display. Cruise on to Koh Rok Nok, which is a protected wildlife habitat that has pretty coral gardens teeming with vibrant tropical fish. You’ll be able to spot them right beneath Formosa ; head to her swim platform for the best view, or snorkel in the warm waters for a closer look.

Elite Tip: For a memorable night, head to a secret spot and the crew will set up a campfire on the beach.

Since her launch in 2015, Savannah has won a host of awards

Savannah is an incredible vessel to charter — she is as innovative as she is impressive, with stellar eco-credentials to boot. She is the world’s first-ever hybrid motoryacht and uses a specialized propulsion system to ensure reduced emissions for sustainable cruising. Since her launch in 2015, she has won a host of awards; it’s easy to see why. She has a total of four decks, connected by an elevator and a rosewood spiral staircase. The owner’s suite is on the private upper deck, and the VIP cabin (complete with its own waterside balcony) and additional four en-suite double cabins are found on the main deck.

The main deck also has a 30-ft swimming pool, expansive sundeck with DJ booth and barbecue. There is an onboard spa with hammam (a masseuse and beautician are part of the crew) and a well-equipped gym with views of the ocean — but if you’re more into shooting hoops, then head to her basketball court. Savannah’s piece de resistance is the underwater lounge. It’s the first underwater viewing lounge of its kind, with floor-to-ceiling windows that open up the world beneath the surface for your viewing pleasure. It can also be turned into a cinema room with stadium-style seating.

As one of the world’s natural seven wonders, the Great Barrier Reef is simply remarkable. A large part of the 1,430-mile stretch of coral reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to limit the impact of tourism, so Savannah’s eco-friendly credentials make her a considered choice to charter here. The reef is home to some 900 islands, and while you could certainly head on a longer jaunt to try and see as many of them as possible, this seven-day itinerary from Northrop & Johnson explores the wonders in and around Lizard Island.

One of the most photogenic infinity pools you will see

On day one, you’ll cruise toward Mackay Cay — a small sand island that only rises about a foot above high tide. Snorkel in the surrounding crystal-clear waters and look out for endangered plants and animals. Sail on to Rachel Carson Reef for a spot of fishing, then enjoy a few sunset cocktails on Savannah’s main deck before dinner. Then head on to Anderson Reef, where you can snorkel or dive world-famous sites, including Steve’s Bommie and Temple of Doom. Or, if you’d prefer, head to Savannah’s Nemo Lounge for stunning vistas of the underwater world around you.

In the following days you will sail on to visit Ribbon Reef 7, Ribbon Reef 9, Cod Hole and Dynamite Pass. On day five, you’ll arrive at Lizard Island — follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook, and hike up to the highest point on the island (known as Cook’s Look) to take in the astonishing views; snorkel amongst the giant clams at Clam Gardens, or kayak through the clear waters.

If you’re a fitness enthusiast, the wellness facilities are outstanding: There is a very well-equipped gym that overlooks the ocean, and a sumptuous spa treatment room.

The main islands in the Balearics are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, and each has its own distinct character. This seven-day itinerary from Burgess begins in Club de Mar, Mallorca’s chic marina, before gliding onto Playa Es Trenc, a six-mile stretch of beach with shallow, aquamarine waters and powdery sand. Spend the day strolling along the white sands and wading through the clear waters before enjoying an alfresco dinner onboard. Head chef Lee Easdon grew up in a small fishing village in Cornwall, England so, unsurprisingly, he has a passion for seafood. Dine on seared sea bass with fennel puree, dauphine potato and fennel.

The next day, you’ll sail on to Formentera. The ‘chill’ island (known as Ibiza’s calmer sister) is perfect for lazy days in the sunshine: Relax on Joy’s sundeck or grab a SeaBob — this is a prime spot for underwater viewing. If you’re up for something more energetic, have a one-on-one training session in the gym. Next, travel on to Ibiza Town. Go ashore in the Wajer 38 tender, then meander through cobbled streets in the fortified Unesco-listed Old Town, or hit one of the famous clubs. Start the next day with a 90-minute Ayurvedic massage in Joy’s spa suite while you sail north on to Cala Xarraca — an off-the-beaten-track beach, surrounded by pine forests and with natural mud baths. Cruise to Puerto Soller, a small and charming seaside town, and Puerto Andratx, a glamorous fishing village on the western tip of Mallorca.

Elite Tip: Joy’s onboard fitness instructor can create a bespoke training plan for your time spent at sea.

These Are the 5 Biggest Superyachts in the World

By Brett Berk

Rendering of a superyacht sailing along a city coastline

Yachts, as with most other things connected to the ultrarich—apartments, shopping sprees, bank accounts—are getting bigger. And while price, nautically speaking, usually scales with size, that’s not always the case. So there’s, oddly enough, less overlap between this list and our recent list of the  World’s Most Expensive Superyachts than one might expect.

There are reasons behind this. Interestingly, some of the biggest superyachts in the world have become so stunningly large that they can no longer maintain status as belonging to a single family or dynasty. The largest ones have become condominiums or charterable research vessels—playthings for the ultrawealthy.

Still, superyachts offer a kind of privacy that it is nearly impossible to come by on land. Pencil towers have entrances on public streets and elevators with other residents. Even a castle surrounded by a moat is in view, comparatively. A superyacht, on the other hand, is essentially a private island, an oasis. So as long as the rich keep getting richer, the yachts will keep getting bigger. For now, these are the five biggest superyachts in the world.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's the private luxury yacht Eclipse anchors during winter season in Bodrum of Mugla...

5. Eclipse (533 ft)

In 2010, as  Eclipse sailed out of the Hamburg harbor, where it was constructed by notable German shipbuilder Blohm+Voss, it was the world’s largest ship. In the intervening decade or so, it’s slid to the fifth position. Commissioned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich—whose ties to Putin have caused him to be sanctioned—it allegedly traded hands last year, though this may be simply a dodge to avoid it being seized. Features of the $600 million Terence Disdale–designed ship include 17 staterooms, a 185-foot deck on the massive primary suite, a gym, a spa, an immense swimming pool, and a half-dozen on-board tenders for shuttling guests in and out of port and excursions. If those don’t suffice, there is also a helicopter pad with room for three choppers.

The Fulk al Salamah yacht of Sultan Qaboos

4. Fulk Al Salamah (538 ft)

Like many superyachts, ownership and much else about Fulk Al Salamah —Ship of Peace—is unclear. It is suspected that it belongs to the Omani royal family, a part of their fleet of extortionately expensive conveyances. Built by Mariotti in Genoa in 2016 and designed by local team Studio de Jorio, it contains a beach club (a swim platform, often with a pool and lounge area), beauty salon, and a sizable helicopter deck, though it’s unclear if this deck has room for more choppers than the Eclipse, despite its additional five feet of overall length.

the United Arab Emirates presidential megayacht Azzam in the Cadiz harbor

3. Azzam (597 ft)

Azzam holds the title of largest privately owned superyacht, a position it has maintained since it was completed at a cost of $600 million by Lürssen Yachts in Lemwerder, Germany, ten years ago. Designed by Nauta of Milan with interiors by French decorator Christophe Leoni, the ship is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nayah. Prominent features include Empire-style furnishings and interiors, and a pair of massive diesel engines coupled with a pair of gas turbines, allowing high-speed travel and an immense range between refuelings. The Sheikh must be somewhat paranoid—or have good reason to fear attack—because the yacht also includes a high tech security system including a missile system and bulletproof master suite.

2. REV Ocean (600 ft)

The acronym in this giant yacht’s title stands for Research and Expedition Vessel, and this $350 million ship is outfitted to do just that. Groups that charter it head out to sea and use its state of the art scientific equipment to dive into trenches in its transparent-domed submersibles, arrange whale pod viewings in its helicopters, conduct seabed mapping and coring with its sonar and drilling systems, view documentaries in its 35-person theater, and even listen in on or record the conversations of ocean mammals with its underwater hydrophone. Funded by the Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke, designed in Norway by Espen Øino, and built by Norwegian constructor Vard, it is slated to be completed in 2024. Over 100 groups applied for the maiden voyage, with preference given for scientific research and conservation missions—54 scientists can be accommodated onboard. Though it seems that private charters with the proper scientific supervision may also be allowed. Any profits made by chartering are returned to the funder’s One Healthy Ocean initiative.

1. Somnio (728ft)

Referred to as the world’s first yacht liner, this floating giant—the name is Latin for dream—combines features of a superyacht, a cruise ship, and a condominium. Under construction by the Norwegian ship-building company Vard, with an expected completion date in the middle of 2024, the $600 million project will feature 39 private residences designed by Winch and Tilberg, both of Sweden. Each will include bespoke features including a gym, kitchen, library, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. Of course, apartments, which start in the eight-figure range, are available by invite only. Both the owners list and the planned route at sea are closely guarded secrets.

Six standout explorer yacht launches of 2022

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The past few years have seen an increasing trend for pocket-sized explorers and expedition-ready support vessels, alongside more traditional explorer yachts. With the 2022 Explorer Yachts Summit fast approaching, we take a look at six standout explorer yachts launched in 2022 (so far)...

Ushering in the “groundbreaking” new B.Yond 37 series, the 37 metre Goga is one of Benetti’s most exciting launches of the year. With a steel hull, hybrid propulsion system and 5,000 nautical mile range at ten knots, the new model offers explorer capacities with “unprecedented” reductions in emissions, according to the yard. During her launch, Azimut | Benetti founder and president Paolo Vitelli described Goga as “one of the most innovative boats ever built”.

The 44 metre Heeus is the first unit in a line of compact explorer yachts built by Turkish shipyard Bering . Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the yacht features an ice belt for high-latitude cruising and is equipped with a fuel capacity of 95,600 litres. Her cruising range will be 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, assisted by a hybrid propulsion system that allows her to cruise more consciously in remote areas. First launched in April, Heeus is hull number one in the Bering 145 series and is the new flagship of the shipyard.

Fresh from a conversion, the 80.1 metre support yacht U-81 is now one of the largest shadow vessels afloat. She began life as a commercial ship built by Damen in 2015, and the half-complete project went in for a conversion at Damen’s UAE yard in 2019. She is now packed with amenities designed to facilitate adventure and expedition, including a helipad, large sports court and multiple storage solutions for tenders, chase boats and toys. She is the support vessel to Amels' 89 metre Here Comes the Sun .

Oceanic 143

The hotly-anticipated launch of the 43.45 metre Canados Oceanic 143 took place in July. The model is the first superyacht-scale example of Canados ’ Oceanic concept, which focuses on balancing explorer capacities with speed. To this end, the Oceanic 143 is expected to offer a 6,000 nautical mile range when travelling at 8.5 knots, with a top speed of 23 knots. The superyacht's twin-stepped hull has been designed to reduce friction and improve stability in rough seas.

Named Chapter 3 , the second unit of the 37XP series was launched by Numarine earlier in 2022. The 37 metre model boasts a maximum cruising range of 6,000 nautical miles at eight knots, with power delivered by a pair of Caterpillar diesel engines. She was commissioned by an American owner and is the first of five 37XP models to make their way across the pond in the next five years.

The 67 metre shadow yacht Nebula was launched at the end of 2021 and subsequently delivered by Spanish yard Astilleros Armon in July 2022. The all-alumunium catamaran follows in the footsteps of fellow ShadowCat support yachts 66.2m Hodor and 68.2m Wayfinder , with a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

The 2022 Explorer Yachts Summit will be hosted on November 10 at the Yacht Club de Monaco. Tickets are now available to purchase online via the button below.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

Do you have any details about Launchpad or any other superyachts? Email reporter Madeline Berg at [email protected].

From Diving to Shipwrecks to Kayaking Luminous Waters: 10 Caribbean Experiences You Can Only Access by Boat

These unforgettable experiences are worth the ride., claire volkman, claire volkman's most recent stories.

Best Charter Experience BVI

The Caribbean is a big place, with more than 700 islands and roughly 44.5 million people spread across 33 political entities—13 sovereign states, 12 dependencies, one historical disputed territory, and seven other overseas territories. While travelers tend to lump the region into “the Caribbean,” there’s a rich tapestry of cultures, cuisines, experiences, and waters across the 1.06 million square miles of the Caribbean Sea.

We decided that, instead of divvying this list by island, we’d select different experiences, accessible only by boat. They range from exploring sunken shipwrecks to getting a taco on a floating restaurant in the middle of turquoise waters to diving stunning ecosystems, to enjoying some of the best sportfishing in the world.

The list isn’t exhaustive by any means, but it does show the range of possibilities in this beautiful, and often remote region, even after the spring-breakers have left and it moves into the much-less crowded summer season—which is often the best time to visit.

Here are 10 of our favorite island experiences.

Best Snorkeling, Barrier Reef in Turks & Caicos

best superyacht elevators

The third-largest coral reef in the world, the Turks and Caicos’ Barrier Reef is home to over 60 coral species and over 250 fish species. Spanning 65 miles along the eastern edge of the islands, the reef is only accessible by boat. On a good day, you can see up to 100 feet below the surface (thanks to the extremely clear, blue waters), offering a chance for snorkelers to spot stingrays, reef sharks, vibrant reef fish, eagle rays, and dolphins. Local vessel Lady Grace is a full-service catamaran with a picnic lunch, a full open bar, and even a slide off the back that provides direct access to the reef.

Best Surf Spots, Costa Rica

best superyacht elevators

Hidden along Costa Rica’s captivating coastlines are some of the country’s best-kept surfing secrets, like Punta Uva, an unspoiled stretch of coastline offering consistent waves and nearby rain forests. Nearby, Playa Negra beckons with its volcanic black sand and powerful reef breaks, providing an exhilarating challenge for experienced surfers. Further south, the secluded shores of Playa Chiquita offer a tranquil escape and epic waves for all skill levels. For those craving a genuinely off-the-grid experience, head to the remote breaks of Manzanillo, home to crowd-free beaches and rugged wilderness.

Best Family Charters, British Virgin Islands

best superyacht elevators

Combining breathtaking scenery with an array of activities accessible by boat, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) have long been a playground for families. The crystal-clear waters and untouched beaches are idyllic, with areas like Cane Garden Bay on Tortola offering white sand and picnics, and across Sir Francis Drake Channel, the boulders of the Baths on Virgin Gorda are the perfect destination for selfies. You can then cruise from the Baths to Devil’s Bay National Park to discover vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life beneath the crystal-clear waters. Flamingo Pond offers up the pink, graceful beauty of these majestic birds in their natural habitat. The Moorings, Sunsail, MarineMax Vacations, and Kensington Yachts offer barebone or full-service charters.

Best Beachside Restaurant, Hemingway’s, Turks & Caicos

best superyacht elevators

While just about every Caribbean island can claim top spot in this category, we chose an eatery named after our favorite writer of the sea. Located at the four-star Sands Resort at Grace Bay, Hemingway’s Restaurant sits on the white sandy beaches of Turks and Caicos’ most famous beach—Grace Bay. Inspired by the spirit of the legendary Ernest Hemingway, this beachfront gem offers a dining experience that becomes a Hemingwayesque journey into the heart and soul of Caribbean cuisine. Be sure to ask for the Old Man and the Sea special or choose an untitled fan favorite, like the curry lobster or grilled snapper. Call ahead to reserve your table during the golden hour to enjoy one of the best sunsets you’ll ever see. Local yacht  Red Hospitality offers a range of day charters.

Best Offshore Taco Stand, Lime Out, St. Johns, USVI

best superyacht elevators

Only reachable by boat, Lime Out Taco Bar—located just off St. John’s, USVI—fulfills any cravings for the munchies, even when you’re far out to sea. Distinguished by its “lily pads,” these green, circular floating tables offer the chance to sit, eat and drink in the warm Caribbean waters. Since these tables are first-come, first-serve, many people order fresh Mahi Mahi or local shrimp tacos ahead to enjoy from their charter boats. Local vessels include the Flying Frenchman, Axopar 37, or VanDutch 40 for getting you to the best sights around St. Johns, and then out to this popular watering hole.

Best Fishing, Guna Yala and Isla Bastimentos, Panama

best superyacht elevators

Some of the best fishing in the world can be found in Panama’s San Blas Islands, off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama. The remote archipelago of 300 islands boasts exceptional fishing opportunities in turquoise waters and near coral reefs, including fly-fishing for bonefish and permit. When not fishing, a visit to the islands’ Guna Yala indigenous people is a fascinating experience. Closer to Bocas del Toro is Isla Bastimentos, where you can fish for snapper, grouper, and tarpon. YC Yachts Panama has a number of charter vessels that can show you the islands.

Best Wreck Diving, Cayman Islands

best superyacht elevators

Besides being known as a tax haven, the Cayman Islands boast an impressive array of shipwrecks waiting to be explored. From the iconic Captain Keith Tibbets wreck to the USS Kittiwake, a former U.S. Navy submarine rescue vessel transformed to an artificial reef, an underwater trip is like diving through time. Another must-see is the Gamma, a 100-foot cargo ship that crashed during a storm in 1981. The wreck sits in only nine feet of water and is located at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, letting snorkelers join scuba enthusiasts. Cayman Yacht Charters offers sailboats, catamarans, or crewed motoryachts to discover these wrecks.

Best Wildlife Viewing, St. Martin/St. Maarten National Reserve

best superyacht elevators

Cradled at the island’s northernmost tip and encompassing nearly seven miles of coastline, St. Martin Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife lovers. From December to April mating seasons, humpback whales seek this protected area to breech and feed. While snorkeling, other marine marvels include Great Barracudas and graceful leatherback turtles, to dozens of other fish. On land, a hike will reveal iguanas and red-billed tropicbirds living in the salt ponds and mangroves. St. Maarten boat charters provides day trips to access the National Reserve’s bounty.

Best Nighttime Activity, Bioluminescent Bays in Puerto Rico

best superyacht elevators

There’s nothing quite like experiencing bioluminescent bays firsthand. These magical bays include Mosquito Bay in Vieques and Laguna Grande in Fajardo. They come alive after dark with the glow of microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates. When these organisms are agitated, such as by movement in the water caused by passing boats, they emit a bright blue-green light, creating a surreal and magical glow in the water. As you paddle through the calm waters, every movement creates a stunning light display, transforming the bays into celestial spectacles. Best months to visit: December through May. Hook’d on Adventure organizes kayak trips into this otherworldly wonderland.

Best Untouched Beach, No Name Beach, Bonaire

best superyacht elevators

No Name Beach in Bonaire earns its place on this list as the ultimate secluded beach for several reasons. Its name hints at exclusivity. But its remote location, reachable only by boat, is how it earned the name. You can take a water taxi for $25 or, if you want to time-manage the day, charter a private boat through Epic Tours Bonaire to explore the pristine haven.

Saratov Conservatory - alma mater in the Gothic style

2024 Author : Angel Austin | [email protected] . Last modified: 2023-12-17 05:14

The hallmark of the city of Saratov is rightfully the Saratov Conservatory named after L. Sobinov. The unique Gothic architecture, which is not repeated anywhere else in the buildings of the city, is distinguished by its sophistication, chimeras and turrets. And the music and chants coming from the windows of the building attract the eyes and ears of guests and residents of the city.

The Saratov Conservatory was destined to become the third music school in Tsarist Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. The history of the school as an educational institution began in 1895, but the starting point for the history of the building in its current location dates back to 1902. The school was built according to the project of Petersburger Alexander Yang, and later there were many dissatisfaction with the appearance of the building. In the Saratov newspapers of that time, he was called nothing more than an "elevator".

Then the architect Kallistratov took up the reconstruction. Probably, thanks to Nemetskaya Street (now Kirov Avenue), on which the Saratov Conservatory was located, the building acquired Gothic turrets, gargoyles and lancet vaults and opened in1912. By 1918, the institution received the status of a state institution, and in 1935 the conservatory became named after the tenor Leonid Sobinov.

The Saratov Conservatory offers applicants the following faculties and speci alties for admission.

A music school for gifted children is also open, where nuggets from 6 years old are accepted, and the Summer Theater School forteenagers 11-16 years old.

Every year, the Saratov Conservatory produces artists who gain popularity by acting in films and TV shows. Many legendary actors have already become the hallmark of the theater department, their names attract more and more applicants who dream of repeating the star track. Among the famous actors are Oleg Yankovsky, Evgeny Mironov, Vladimir Konkin. Younger, but actively appearing in the tabloids Maxim Matveev, Yulia Zimina, Maxim Loktionov also came out from under the wing of the Saratov Conservatory. The composer Igor Krutoy and the famous baritone, people's artist Leonid Smetannikov also studied at the educational institution.

The variety of departments and speci alties of the educational institution makes it possible to create creative teams and musical ensembles on the basis of the university. The repertoire of the Saratov Conservatory always pleases its guests with popular works performed by students of the educational institution. The conservatory has three halls. The large one can accommodate 469 people and is one of the most beautiful halls in Russia. It houses three grand pianos, as well as a Sauer organ. The foyer of the great hall also allows you to organize events such as nightly concerts. The Small Hall can accommodate 100 people and is designed for student performances as well as chamber music.

The Theater Concert Hall is equipped with a DJ console, modern lighting and sound equipment, has excellent acousticcharacteristics. It is used for conferences, concerts, theatrical performances and rehearsals. The hall is designed for 216 visitors and has a good air conditioning and ventilation system.

The most attractive within the walls of concert halls for the Saratov audience and listener is organ music. Therefore, the conservatory opened special subscriptions for attending organ concerts and performances. Folklore music, choral singing, world works for string and brass bands, works by students of the school for gifted children and much more can be found in the repertoire of the Saratov Conservatory. Those who are not indifferent to the violin should visit the "Evening of Violin Music", where the works of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius are played. Prokofiev, Liszt, Chopin, Tchaikovsky are favorites in the concert programs "An Evening of Piano Music". It should be noted that the performing artists are laureates of all-Russian and foreign music and vocal competitions. For example, the Academic Choir of the Saratov Conservatory, which gives concerts in the large hall of the Conservatory to the accompaniment of organ and piano.

The conservatory hosts various festivals. One of the past was the festival "In Panitsky's Homeland", where accordionists and accordionists from Russia, Moldova, and China participated. Anniversaries of artists are also celebrated with concerts. An event dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the pedagogical activity of the people's artist and teacher L. Smetannikov is coming. In December, the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Muslim Magomayev will take place, where his best songs will be performed, accompanied by a pop ensemble. Forchildren will prepare the musical "By the Pike's Command" for the New Year, which will take place during the winter holidays.

Starting from the end of the 11th century, changes took place in the character of the established Carolingian uncial writing: the writing of letters became compacted, their roundings broke down and the vertical stroke became stronger. The concentration of the reader began to be transferred from a single letter to the image of a word. The emerging Gothic type set a new historical milestone

Mother of American freed from Russian detention: "You could hear the relief in his voice"

From CNN’s Andy Rose

Tina Hauser speaks with CNN Friday March 25, about the release of her son Tyler Jacob from Russian detention after 10 days.

After weeks of worry and fear, Tina Hauser and John Quinn finally got the call they were

waiting for on Friday evening: their son, Tyler Jacob, had been freed from Russian detention after 10 days.

Jacob, an American from Minnesota, had been living in Ukraine and was detained while trying to leave the country. Since then, US officials including Sen. Amy Klobuchar have been working to secure his release.

When they were notified Jacob had landed in an unnamed NATO member country, "I was ecstatic," Hauser said. They called him on Facetime, and "he looks really tired, but he looks really good, too,” she said. "You could hear the relief in his voice."

Jacob’s father, Quinn, told CNN his son was not mistreated in Russian custody, but they are still very relieved he will be coming home. “It was a roller coaster,” Quinn said. “It was up and down, the hurdles that we had to get over to get him to safety.”

Pussy Riot's Nadya Tolokonnikova: Russian protesters defying Putin are "the future of my country"

Nadya Tolokonnikova, a member of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot spoke with CNN recently.

Nadya Tolokonnikova, a member of the Russian punk band and activist group Pussy Riot, expressed her support for Ukraine on Friday, telling CNN she was terrified for her loved ones' safety.

In 2012, Tolokonnikova and another Pussy Riot member were imprisoned in Russia for two years after they performed an anti-Putin protest song called “Punk Prayer” in a Moscow cathedral.

Hearing Russian President Vladimir Putin make false claims about the war "makes me want to puke," she said. "I never watch Russian television because it's just too hard to see how they lie to their own people. My own family members back in Russia believe there are no civilians targeted by the Russian military."

But "there is not much you can do," she said — when she tries to show her family members photos of the destruction in besieged Ukrainian cities like Mariupol and Kharkiv, "they just say it's fake news and propaganda from the West."

With the amount of disinformation, censorship and Putin's crackdown on dissent in Moscow, it's even more remarkable that Russian protesters have taken to the streets to call for an end to the war, she said.

"I'm full of love for Russian people and really grateful for those who actually separate ... Russians from the Russian government," she said. "I see protesters, I see the future for my country ... What you need to understand about Russian protesters, there are so many more people that want to protest but they cannot just because they are not ready to go to jail for 15 years."

Referring to Putin, she added: "I can’t comprehend how just one person can cause so much pain to the whole humanity and I’m deeply sorry that we’re not able to get him out of power earlier."

The war has already hit home for Tolokonnikova. One of her friends, an anti-corruption activist, was killed by shelling in Kyiv. Her ex-husband and father of her child is also in Kyiv right now. "Me and my daughter are terrified," she said.

"We have no information": Mexican President responds to US claims of Russian agents in Mexico

From CNN's Karol Suarez and Abby Baggini

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador speaks during a news conference at the National Palace in Mexico City on February 10.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday his government does not have information about any Russian agents based in the country, following comments from a US general.

On Thursday, Gen. Glen VanHerck told a Senate hearing that "the largest portion of the GRU members in the world is in Mexico right now, those are Russian intelligence personnel and they keep an eye very closely on their opportunities to have an influence on US opportunities and access."

Lopez Obrador responded: "We have no information about that, and we do not prevent any foreigner who wants to carry out legal activities in the country from doing so.

"It's a declaration, we are not going to question anything, we are respectful of the free expression of ideas, Mexico is a free, independent, and sovereign country, it should be known because sometimes it seems that it's not understood enough. We must send them telegrams informing them that Mexico is not a colony of any foreign country.

CNN has requested comment from Russia's Embassy in Mexico but has not yet received a response.

Some context: Russia's GRU spy agency — formally known as Main Directorate of the General Staff — has long been accused by the West of orchestrating brazen and high-profile attacks, including the hacking of Democratic Party email accounts during the 2016 US presidential election and the 2018 nerve agent attack in Salisbury, England.

American Tyler Jacob freed from Russian detention, senator says

Tyler Jacob, seen in a Oct. 2021 family photo, was living in Ukraine and freed Friday March 25, from detention in Russia.

Tyler Jacob, an American living in Ukraine, was freed from detention in Russia on Friday, according to the office of Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

“I am relieved that Tyler is safely reunited with his wife and daughter,” Klobuchar said in a statement. “Over the last two weeks, my team and I have been in close contact with his family, the State Department, and the US embassy in Moscow working towards this outcome, and I am grateful that we were able to help bring him to safety.”

Klobuchar’s office said Jacob, who is originally from Winona, Minnesota, was taken by Russian forces about two weeks ago while trying to leave Ukraine. He was held in Russia for 10 days.

“I am grateful that Tyler, his wife, and their daughter are in a safe place,” said Jacob’s father, John Quinn, in the statement by Klobuchar’s office.

A State Department spokesman told CNN the department was aware of the reports but had no further comment due to privacy considerations.

Wagner group contractors were involved in Zelensky assassination plot, top Ukrainian official says

From CNN’s David McKenzie and Ghazi Balkiz

Markian Lubkivskyi, an adviser to Ukraine's defense minister spoke with CNN recently.

A senior adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense told CNN the notorious Russian private military group Wagner was involved in an alleged assassination plot against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

“They wanted to assassinate the leadership of Ukraine: our President and Prime Minister. That was the goal and a couple of them were sent to Ukraine without any success,” Markian Lubkivskyi, an advisor to Ukraine's defense minister said.

Lubkivskyi said the plot was confirmed by Ukraine’s intelligence service and special forces in charge of protecting Zelensky.

“All these documents and the necessary proof will be presented to the International Court,” he said, adding that he couldn’t reveal more due to operational reasons.

CNN was unable to independently confirm the claims.

The Wagner group first came to prominence during Russia’s invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2014. Since then, independent research and CNN investigations have found that the private military contractor has operated in Syria and multiple countries in Africa. They have been accused by US officials and human rights watchdogs of sustained human rights abuses.

The group is thought to be connected to — and financed by — Yevgeny Prigozhin, an oligarch so close to the Kremlin that he is known as Putin's "chef."

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any links to the group. Prigozhin denies any involvement in Wagner.

On Thursday, the United Kingdom became the latest country to sanction Wagner.

Lubkivskyi says that Ukrainian intelligence has tracked the group inside and outside of Ukraine and that several Wagner operatives have been killed inside the country, identified by their unique ID tags.

Zelensky has repeatedly committed to staying in Ukraine to marshal the country’s defense during the war, now in its second month.

“The morale of the army is very high because our President is in Kyiv, our Prime Minister and parliament is here. This is very important to support people on the ground, to support the Ukrainian army and this is a very good signal to the international community,” Lubkivsyi said.

UK will welcome thousands of Ukrainian refugees but some say the complicated system puts paperwork over lives

From CNN’s Nada Bashir and Lauren Kent in London

People wave banners and hearts aboard a small flotilla of boats leaving Bristol harbour in support of Ukrainian refugees during a day of national action on March 21.

Ukrainian refugees hoping to settle in the UK say they are facing a host of obstacles in the process, including long lines at UK immigration centers, weeks spent paying for temporary housing and forms that require them to put their trust in strangers with sensitive personal documents.

So far, the British government says it has issued 20,000 visas to Ukrainian refugees hoping to reunite with relatives through the Ukraine Family Scheme, which allows those fleeing Ukraine to apply for a special visa that would allow them to live and work in the UK for up to three years. But there are still thousands of applications waiting to be processed.

While the UK government schemes are “certainly more generous” than previous re-settlement programs, it remains a complicated procedure, said Laura Kyrke-Smith, UK Executive Director of the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

“A far better system would be for visas to be waived altogether,” Kyrke-Smith told CNN. “Every human being has the right to seek asylum under international law.”

Ukrainian refugees and their families who spoke to CNN described the process as frustrating and difficult to understand, while others said they feared they would struggle to meet the UK’s document requirements like having copies of their passports and birth certificates given their current circumstances — they’ve fled a war.

Victoria and Andriy, a Ukrainian-British couple who have lived in the UK for more than a decade, told CNN the process to bring Victoria’s elderly parents – who had fled their hometown of Berdyansk – was complicated.

“I was their only source of information. There were no clear instructions,” Victoria told CNN. Meanwhile, her husband’s family is still waiting in Poland.

A separate scheme aims to connect Ukrainians with sponsors in the UK who are willing to host refugees. But would-be hosts say it’s riddled with red tape. The fine print says host applicants need to identify a refugee to sponsor on their own.

Host Elsa De Jager took to Facebook and connected with Yana, a 32-year-old teacher who hopes to make it out of Ukraine with her 4-year-old.

The two are strangers, but they have been required to share sensitive personal documents as part of the application process.

De Jager told CNN she believes the British government has intentionally made the process difficult to deter Ukrainians from attempting to settle in the UK.

“There shouldn't be this kind of red tape when people are getting bombed every day,” she said. “It’s a PR stunt … It’s lovely on paper, but when you go through the process, it's nigh on impossible to actually do it."

The British government says Ukrainian refugees are welcome, and according to the Home Office, Britain’s visa application process has been “streamlined” in order to help refugees through the process “as quickly as possible.”

Ukraine's Zelensky claims more than 16,000 Russian troops lost

From Olena Mankovska, Masha Angelova and Hira Humayun

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky speaks during a video message on Facebook Friday March 25.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia has lost more than 16,000 troops so far.

“The number of the Russian losses has exceeded 16,000 casualties,” Zelensky said in a video message posted to social media on Friday. “Among them are the high-ranking commanders. So far no reports of killed Russian general colonels or admirals. However, in that number we have a commander of one of the occupiers' armies and a second in command of the Black Sea Navy.”

CNN cannot independently verify Zelensky’s claims.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a briefing Friday that 1,351 military personnel had been killed in Ukraine and 3,825 had been wounded, during the first major casualty update since March 2.

Meanwhile, two senior NATO military officials on Wednesday estimated the number of Russian soldiers killed in action in Ukraine to be between 7,000 and 15,000. Other US officials have put Russian losses in a similar range — between 7,000 and 14,000 Russian soldiers killed — but they have expressed “low confidence” in those estimates.

The Ukrainian president on Friday also said authorities were able to ensure 18 humanitarian corridors over the past week and managed to rescue 37,606 people including 26,477 from the besieged city of Mariupol who were taken to Zaporizhzhia.

“All of these war crimes against the civilians in Mariupol and other cities of Ukraine will continue informing nations of the world,” Zelensky said.

Russian military remains in full control of city of Kherson, residents say

From CNN's Natalie Gallon, Gianluca Mezzofiore, Nick Paton Walsh, Tim Lister, Paul P. Murphy, Ellie Kaufman and Oren Liebermann

The Ukrainian flag is draped in front of the Kherson City Hall on March 24.

The city of Kherson remains under total Russian control, four residents of the city told CNN, contrary to number of reports from other media outlets, citing a senior US defense official.

"Today [I] saw them with their guns at the market, possibly searching vegetables for buying," one resident said to CNN on Friday evening. "They lose only couple of villages, not towns."

CNN is not naming the resident over concerns for their security.

The US official told the outlets, including CNN, that "we’ve seen reports of resistance there in areas that were previously reported to be in Russian control."

"We can’t corroborate exactly who is in control of Kherson, but the point is, it doesn’t appear to be as solidly in Russian control as it was before," the official said. "We would argue that Kherson is actually contested territory again."

The assessment that the city of Kherson was contested was based in part on images and media reports from the city showing the Ukrainian flag draped from city hall, according to two other defense officials.

Previous CNN reporting confirmed that the Ukrainian military counteroffensive has reached the Kherson region's northernmost villages. A CNN crew in one of the northernmost villages in the Kherson region, earlier this week, witnessed the Ukrainian counteroffensive there.

Despite that, in the city of Kherson, the situation is unchanged.

Ukrainian forces have been able to launch attacks from the Mykolaiv region just to the north, into Kherson region, for over a week. While the residents of the city continue to hold large protests, the Russians remain firmly in control of it and much of the region at this time.

For example, residents in town draped a large Ukrainian flag on Thursday down the side of city hall.
