Available at a fraction of the Rolex price, the Ocean One features Swiss made ETA 2824-2 movement. The 42mm case hosts Rolex like hour markers, hands, a date display at 3 under a cyclops lens. A graduated ceramic bezel sits on the case. In addition, the markers and hands remain Superluminova treated and the watch is water-resistant up to 30ATM. Founded in 1904 in Hölstein, Switzerland by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian, Oris offers a premium and well-built alternative. We recommend the Oris Divers Sixty Five for this list for its Rolex like design and features. The watch’s retro design reflects the iconic Oris diver’s collection from the 60s. The 40mm anti-corrosive stainless steel watch runs on an automatic movement under the blue dial. The indices and hands on the dial are luminous. However, unlike the Rolex, the date display is at 6 o’clock instead of 3 o’clock. The bezel bears a close resemblance in design to that of the Yacht-Master. In addition, the Oris Divers Sixty Five is water-resistant up to 10bar. Furthermore, Oris offers a host of configuration options to add to the Rolex feel, making this a good alternative. Almost as expensive as the Rolex and an equal in every way. Swiss brand Omega remains in the upper echelons of luxury Swiss watch brands. The Seamaster 300 also takes on a retro design approach. Inspired by the original Seamaster 300 from 1957, the updated version is incredibly desirable. The polished and brushed 41mm stainless steel case hosts the anti-magnetic Omega Master Co-Axial calibre 8400. The workings are visible through the clear rear. Under the domed, anti‑reflective, and scratch‑resistant sapphire crystal we see rhodium-plated hands filled with  ‘vintage’ Super-LumiNova. A unidirectional rotating polished ceramic bezel ring sits on top with a Liquidmetal diving scale. Above all, this model comes with Omega’s five-year warranty and is water-resistant up to 300m. If you have no limitations financially, treat yourself to the 60th-anniversary special edition version of the Omega Seamaster 300. As a long-time auction house professional, I’ve come across countless Yacht-Masters of all references. I developed this list using this background, along with my experience using my choice homages and many more that didn’t cut it.

I also deliberated with colleagues, watch collectors within and outside of my clientele, and watch specialists in my field. On top of that, I spent countless hours reading and watching reviews, and diving into forums and Reddit threads. As such, All perspectives and priorities are considered in this list.

Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT Ceramic

Our Top Pick Badge Watchoso 1

  • Medium Wrists Ideal for 6.6 to 7.4 inch wrists. Metrics: 35-45mm case size / 42-56mm lug to lug width, while also considering size of bezel, hour marker circle size, lug protrusion, strap, and color of dial i
  • Small Wrists Ideal for 5.5 to 6.5 inch wrists. Metrics: 28-40mm case size / 35-50mm lug to lug width, while also considering size of bezel, hour marker circle size, lug protrusion, strap, and color of dial i
  • Movement:  Automatic
  • Case Size:  39mm
  • Lug to Lug:  47mm
  • Band:  Stainless steel bracelet
  • Water Resistance:  30m

In addition to looking like the Yacht-Master , the Steinhart GMT Ocean 39 Ceramic boasts the combined qualities of a dive watch and a GMT. It has a 24-hour hand, a complete calendar, excellent Super LumiNova, and a ceramic bezel that’s durable and resistant to fading.

The Ocean 39 isn’t just a great homage, but a compelling value proposition of a tool watch.

Thanks to its generously-sized bezel, you might think it is the Yacht-Master at first glance. As any quality homage though, its thoughtful differences allow it to stand on its own.

The GMT hand adds a pop of color on top of its extra functionality. Plus, it may not come in as many sizes as its source material, but the 39mm is a reasonable middle-ground between large and small cases that suits most, if not all, wrists.

It even comes in a two-tone “Chocolate” version reminiscent of the gold and steel versions of the Yacht-Master.

The Ocean 39 runs on the Elaboré version of the already reliable SW200, which is leveled up in accuracy and precision.

What I Like

  • This watch not only looks a lot like the Yacht-Master , but wears like it as well thanks to the large bezel-to-case ratio, and equally as generous case-to-lugs ratio.
  • It runs on a premium and accurate 21-jewel Swiss movement that’s anti-magnetic and anti-shock.
  • This timepiece combines dive and GMT watch features, making it a robust and function-forward tool watch.

What I Don’t Like

  • The Steinhart stock buckle is friction-based, for a less-than-smooth action. You also need an extra 16mm end link if you want to add a replacement.

What Do Other Reviewers Say?

Reviewers are impressed with the flawless finishing, particularly in how perfectly the bezel lines up with the indices. Many also rave about how comfortable this watch is to wear, crediting it to the universal 39mm case size and smooth lugs.

Many mention that while the 21-click bezel is crisp and strong, it can be hard to grip due to how thin it is.

Overall, the Ocean 39 is popular in watch forum communities , many agreeing it punches way above its price point.

The Verdict

The Steinhart GMT Ocean 39 Ceramic has the robust looks of the Yacht-Master and the premium build of a Swiss luxury watch for a fraction of the typical cost.

It has an accurate automatic movement, a flat sapphire with a beautiful blue AR-coat, and a strong ceramic bezel that’s highly polished. It’s also a dive watch with Submariner -level water resistance as well as a GMT hand, making it a multi-hyphenate tool watch.

Steinhart GMT Ocean 39 Ceramic

The Steinhart Ocean 39 Vintage GMT Premium Ceramic is our top pick for three reasons. You get a lot of function out of this timepiece, thanks to its combination of dive watch and travel watch features. Second, each function is premiumly-built, from the Swiss Elaboré movement to the hard-clicking bezel and effortless bracelet operation.

Upgrade Pick Badge Watchoso 1

  • Case Size:  40mm
  • Lug to Lug:  48mm
  • Water Resistance:  200m

The most immediately-seen remarkable quality about the Swiss-made Davosa Ternos is the watch’s overall finishing. The brushing on the bracelet and lugs is clean, and the applications are flawless, and well-aligned for effective legibility.

Even the Mercedes hour hand is immaculately executed.

The date cyclops offers crystal clarity, which is remarkable since cyclops windows are often go-to short-cuts for homage-makers at any price point.

The Ternos runs on the DAV 3021, which is based on the Sellita series 200, a clone of ETA 2824. This movement is a reliable workhorse that matches automatic Swiss movements at higher price points.

It’s also easy to regulate. And since almost all watchmakers have experience with this movement, you’ll have no issues finding someone to service it.

  • Davosa’s rendition of the ETA 2824 movement beats at a precise 28,800 BPH which gives the second hand a continuous and steady movement.
  • Comes with a two-year warranty and is sent directly to you from Davosa via Express Courier.
  • A genuine Swiss-made luxury timepiece, from its high-tech ceramic bezel, soft blue sapphire, President bracelet, to its refined finishing throughout
  • The minute hand is a little short and doesn’t touch the outer minute track.

The Ternos is one of the most popular Yacht-Master homages , with forum-goers often considering Davos at the top of the homage pecking order.

Reviewers praise the watch’s accuracy, craftsmanship, and solid end links which provide a stable but comfortable experience.

A few Amazon reviewers mention long shipping times. As always, keep in touch with your seller and do your research to make sure they’re reputable.

If your main priority is clean finishing and a high-end looking construction, the Davosa Ternos offers considerate quality-to-price. The brand’s reputation in the watch world also adds a level of street cred.

Its durable and reliable Swiss movement is based on a familiar often-used caliber, which means this watch can last you for decades.

Pagani Design PD-1651

Best on a Budget Badge Watchoso 1

  • Water Resistance:  100m

Not only is the Pagani PD-1651 an almost-exact replica of the Yacht-Master , but it comes in 14 different colorways. Between the wide-ranging options and the sub-100 price point, the 1651 has a collectible quality about it too.

Regardless of which one you go for, the sunburst dial behind the applied indices offers legibility and beautiful lightplay that makes the watch look far more expensive than it is.

On the function front, this watch has respectably long-lasting lume, and runs on a popular Seiko movement. The NH35A is fairly accurate. More importantly, it will last a long time without needing service thanks to its low rate of six beats per second.

  • The design is almost a one-for-one with the Yacht-Master , including the signature bezel number placement to the half-recessed crown.
  • The sunburst dial behind the applied indices offers legibility and attractive lightplay.
  • Seiko’s NH35A automatic movement is easily hacked and serviced.
  • Pagani’s stainless steel bracelets come with stiff links, and the microadjustment is hard to use due to the small side holes which are difficult to locate.

Reviewers love the PD-1651 ’s high-end looking sunburst and automatic movement, given its sub-100 price point.

Some reviewers complain that Pagani’s product descriptions are misleading. One example is that most sellers, using copy straight from the brand, report that the dial protector is sapphire.

While it’s almost as scratch-resistant as actual sapphire, Pagani uses an artificial sapphire-like glass.

The Pagani PD-1651 is the perfect watch to test-drive the vibe of the Yacht-Master . It’s one of the visually closest homages on the market, is easily found well under $100, and comes in several colorways.

On top of that, it runs on a Seiko automatic, at the cost of most quartz watches.

Alpha Yachtsman

  • Case Size:  44mm

As a brand, Alpha’s attention to detail is superb, especially for its price tag. The Yachtsman is no exception.

The index iron silver dial shimmers and catches the light effectively from every angle. It’s complemented by an icy silver-tone bezel, complete with well–polished raised numbers exactly like the Yacht-Master ’s. Out of all the affordable homages on this market, this combination best mimics the Yacht-Master’s silvery white Rolesium construction.

Even the crown is signed, which showcases an attention to detail rarely seen at this price point.

Alpha isn’t always forthcoming about who manufactures the Yachtmaster’s automatic movement, but I’m 99% sure it’s Seagull.

  • A clear attention to detail is seen throughout the design, from the silver dial, applied indices, brushed and polished surfaces, and signed crown.
  • The 21-jewel automatic is surprisingly accurate, which isn’t usually the case when homage makes use discreet Chinese movements.
  • Alpha offers a one year manufacturer warranty making each purchase secure, no matter how affordable.
  • This watch isn’t water resistant.

Reviewers enjoy how well-executed the silver tone of the dial and bezel are.

Additionally, while most Seagull and Seagull-like movements are usually noisy, many are impressed with how Alpha watches don’t often come with movement issues. Alpha is likely servicing all of the Chinese movements before equipping their watches with them.

The Alpha Yachtsman is an affordable answer to the platinum-based Rolesium-constructed Yacht-Master . At around $100, it doesn’t have the exact natural shine of Rolex’s patented materials. Still, the lustrous iron dial, slick silver bezel, and polished numbers all work together to imitate a similar kind of lightplay.

Parnis Yacht Master

Parnis Yacht Master

  • Movement:  Automatic movement
  • Case Size:  41mm, 43mm
  • Lug to Lug:  46mm, 48mm
  • Water Resistance:  50m

The Parnis Yacht Master is another excellent close-to-template option that’s a fraction of the price of its inspiration piece.

What separates it from other homages is that Parnis embodies one particular component of the spirit of the Yacht-Master that not all homage-makers dip into: its use of different materials.

Sure, Parnis isn’t building their Yacht-Master with platinum or illegally using Rolex Oystersteel and Everose.

But in addition to ceramic black and silver-toned bezels, you can get this watch in rose gold plated stainless steel, a durable and commanding PVD case—and several other material variations if you just scour the internet.

  • Parnis uses different materials not only to create aesthetic variations, but also to offer different functions, like its PVD case colorway.
  • This watch offers thoughtful visual differences, like the double-shield 12 marker, orange second hand, and textured dial variations, allowing it to stand apart from the Yacht-Master while still maintaining the same look.
  • The end of the lugs curve, which offers a sleek design and a comfortable wear on the wrist.
  • It’s almost impossible to catch the threads on the screw down crown, making it difficult to use.

Reviewers praise the aesthetic of the Parnis Yacht Master , and the variations in construction.

Many recommend being diligent when dealing with online Parnis sellers from Asia—and I agree with them.

One Parnis customer mentions that he didn’t receive the extra links he requested to make his watch fit properly. Relatedly, this Reddit reviewer received an ill-fitting bracelet.

The Parnis Yacht Master offers function-forward variations that even Rolex’s Yacht-Master doesn’t have. If you love the precious metal look, but not the price, Parnis will have a version for you. If you wished Rolex would make more tool-looking Yacht-Masters, the PVD Parnis with a textured case is an effective answer.

Gigandet Ocean King

Gigandet Ocean King

  • Large Wrists Ideal for 7.5+ inch wrists. Metrics: 40mm+ case size / 50mm+ lug to lug width, while also considering size of bezel, hour marker circle size, lug protrusion, strap, and color of dial i
  • Case Size:  43.7mm
  • Lug to Lug:  51mm
  • Water Resistance:  300m

Gigandet’s Ocean King has one of the best executed dials in the Yacht-Master homage world. They come as a jaw-droppingly dimensional sunburst variation (in blue or green), and as a flawlessly silken white and black.

A true-blue luxury option, Gigandet takes the Yacht-Master design, and executes it with the discipline of German engineering. The cyclops is clear, the brushing is exquisite, and the red second hand adds a distinct pop of color.

This watch is loaded with useful functions and runs on a strong and shock-resistant automatic movement equipped with 24 jewels.

  • With its 300m of water resistance, extra bright Iume, and safety folding clasp with a double-bracket and dive extension, this Gigandet is an authentic function-heavy tool watch.
  • The finishing on this watch is luxury-level, seen especially in its beautiful dials and perfect applications.
  • The 24-jewel automatic movement is sturdy, and can handle pressure and shock.
  • Gigandet watches can be hard to find outside of Europe, so you’ll have to pay the shipping premium if you aren’t on the continent.

Reviewers not only love the Gigandet Ocean King for its similarities to the Yacht-Master , but as a worthy entry-level luxury watch in general. Many mention how its finishing is equal to Swiss watches several times its price.

With the brand’s Swiss roots and its German-based revival, the brand is also respected among watch collectors.

From its double-coated sapphire, attractive dial, and several useful operations, the Gigandet Ocean King is the Yacht-Master built more affordably and with German precision.

Comparisons aside, the Ocean King is independently reputable and well-constructed in its own right.

Unlike an homage, which is built as a visual tribute to a more expensive watch, an alternative is a comparable model that isn’t always less expensive. It can be a competitor’s counterpart or a similar option within the same brand.

If you’re in the market for a Yacht-Master or homage, check out our worthwhile alternatives first.

Oris Divers Sixty-Five

Oris Divers Sixty-Five

  • Versatile Pick
  • Movement:  Swiss automatic
  • Case Size:  36mm
  • Band:  Rubber strap

Like the Yacht-Master, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five is a robust tool watch with a graduated scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. The Oris, however, is rugged in different places on its body than the Yacht-Master is. The utilitarian rubbers strap offers a less sleek aesthetic than a stainless steel oyster or president would.

Meanwhile, thanks to the Divers Sixty-Five ’s vintage leanings, the bezel is thinner with smaller numbers and the crown is guardless, for a sleeker and simpler look. Still, all of the practical qualities are there from the double-domed AR-sapphire to the Swiss automatic movement.

Longines HydroConquest

Longines HydroConquest

  • Case Size:  41mm
  • Lug to Lug:  50mm

Neither the Longines HydroConquest or the Yacht-Master are afraid of big features. Both watches have similar bezels and are designed for amphibious wearers.

The HydroConquest , however, is distinguished in looks because of its gigantic six, nine, and 12 markers. If you love the wide look of the Yacht-Master , but are also attracted to aviation-inspired designs, this Swiss automatic is for you.

Breitling Superocean 44

Breitling Superocean 44

  • Lug to Lug:  52.7mm
  • Water Resistance:  1000m

The Breitling SuperOcean 44 has bulky features, just like the Yacht-Master. Unlike the Yacht-Master though, Breitling built this watch to be extra beefed up all-around. Its lug-to-lug size is a considerable 52.7mm and, as a true diver’s watch, this guy boasts 1000m of water resistance.

Aesthetically, the SuperOcean 44 has a more animated look to it. Its dial is matte, the indices are heavily outlined like an illustration, and the font for the 6, 9, and twelve look like a cleaned-up version of the BAM!s and POW!s in the ‘60s Batman show. It has fun features that don’t take away from its overall professional look.

With its impressive materials and extra functionalities, the Steinhart is our top pick Yacht-Master homage.

Steinhart GMT Ocean 39 Ceramic

If you want to go the affordable luxury route, the Davosa Ternos and Gigandet Ocean King are both well-respected level-ups.

Davosa Ternos

On the other end of the spectrum, the Alpha Yachtman , Pagani PD-1651 , and the Parnis Yacht Master are cheap but well-built look-alikes each with a distinct offering.

Pagani Design PD-1651

Even if you’re looking to get a Yacht-Master one day, it’s always worth trying out some homages before making the investment.

Is the Yacht-Master a dive watch?

With 100m of water resistance, the Yacht-Master is designed for sports on the water. Though this is enough for most swimmers, a true professional dive watch needs at least 200m of resistance.

Is the Yacht-Master the same as the Submariner?

No. While the Yacht-Master is built for sports near or on water, like boating, the Submariner is the dedicated pro-dive watch.

Ever since I received an Omega Seamaster for my 16th birthday, I fell in love with watches. Professionally, this led me to work for New York and LA’s leading auction houses. Personally, it led to a life as a collector, my Seamaster and my Explorer II being my favorite timepieces.

Luxury for Less: 20 Affordable Alternatives to Rolex Watches

By Erik Rowe

Updated on January 5, 2024

Affordable Alternatives to Rolex Watches

Everybody wants a Rolex . It’s, after all, the most popular luxury watch brand the world has ever known.

It goes beyond the prestige of any other name in the watchmaking world, and this can be seen in the sales as well, making for a quarter of all Swiss watch sales back in 2020.

On the other hand though, due to their extremely high price tags, not everybody can afford a Rolex, which is why most people are left to look for Rolex alternatives.

There’s plenty of watches similar in styling and features to a Rolex, but very different in pricing, usually at least a few times lower.

If you’re curious what are the best affordable alternatives to Rolex watches, you’ve come to the right place.

The watches below are some of our favorites, and definitely the timepieces we recommend.

Tudor Black Bay GMT watch

There are in total thirteen Rolex watch models, some of them extremely cherished, and others a little less popular, and we’ve found alternatives to all of them.

We’ll start this list with one alternative for each of the slightly less popular Rolex models (the Milgauss, Air-King, Sea-Dweller, Yacht Master, Cellini and the Sky-Dweller) and then we’ll give you two alternatives for the most popular Rolex watches (Datejust, Oyster Perpetual, Day-Date, Cosmograph Daytona, GMT Master II, Submariner and the Explorer).

Here they are, in no particular order:

  • Rolex Milgauss Alternative: Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium

Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium

The Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium is a wonderful pick if you’re a fan of the Rolex Milgauss watch, which is a watch used by engineers and scientists all over the world for its anti-magnetic properties, able to withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss, hence its name.

The Tissot version comes with the Powermatic 80 movement, based on the renowned ETA caliber 2824-2, but with some required upgrades.

One of these upgrades has seen the standard balance wheel replaced with one made out of silicon, which is entirely anti-magnetic.

Other features include an increased power reserve from 38 to 80 hours, and a customized rotor.

The watch itself strikes a good balance between a sports watch and a dress one, making it perfectly for every day use.

  • Rolex Air-King Alternative: Citizen NJ0100

Citizen NJ0100

The Rolex Air-King is not as high priced as other Rolex watches, so there aren’t many alternatives to satisfy Rolex enthusiasts out there.

But there’s the Citizen NJ0100, with a similar simple design as the Air-King, a stainless steel flat three link bracelet, and automatic movement.

It’s a good and cheaper replacement, at least until you save up some money to be able to buy the real deal.

Rolex Sea-Dweller Alternative:  Tudor Pelagos

Tudor Pelagos

The Tudor Pelagos is still an expensive watch to be had, but it’s at least half cheaper than the Rolex Sea-Dweller is similar in appearance too.

Since Tudor is a sister company of Rolex, it makes sense they make really close alternatives, but more affordable, without skimping on quality.

Their Pelagos watch features a helium escape vent at the 9 o’clock position, which makes it efficient and keeps it ticking even deep underwater.

It’s got a 42 mm case, with a superb ceramic black dial and titanium unidirectional bezel, both covered with a luminescent coating.

The watch is COSC certified, and comes powered by the hand wound MT5612 Caliber, and has a good 70 hour power reserve.

  • Rolex Yacht-Master Alternative: Invicta Pro Diver 9210

Invicta Pro Diver 9210

The Invicta Pro Diver 9210 is a wonderful choice for those in love with the Rolex Yacht-Master.

The Swiss brand, today based in Hollywood, Florida, it has focused on making affordable luxury since its inception back in 1837.

The watch in question is very similar to the Yacht-Master, almost identical, with a case size and dial design that match those of the Rolex.

The timepiece is powered by a Japanese NH35A automatic movement, which is visible through the clear case back.

The case itself has a depth rating of 200m, so you can even go diving with it.

Rolex Cellini Alternative:  Timex Marlin

Timex Marlin

A good alternative to the stylish Rolex Cellini watch, the Timex Marlin boasts a simple and timeless design, with a nice and clean dial, which makes for an overall elegant look.

The watch comes in several versions, with either a steel bracelet or leather strap, black or white dial, and the case in either silver or gold.

The case is 40 mm, with a water resistance rating of 30m, so you shouldn’t go swimming with it.

The heart of the watch is a 21 jewel automatic movement with a date complication shown in the aperture at 3 o’clock, and a power reserve of 40 hours.

  • Rolex Sky-Dweller Alternative: Stuhrling Northstar GMT

Stuhrling Northstar GMT

The Stuhriling Northstar GMT is a superb timepiece, and one that comes with an aesthetic similar to that of the Rolex Sky-Dweller. It’s got the same features, with the positioning differing slightly.

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is known to be hard to replicate due to its many complications, but this Stuhrling comes close enough, with the same color scheme and those small red accents.

The hands and hour markers have the same shape as well.

On the other hand though, the Northstar GMT won’t have all the functions and complications of the Sky-Dweller, and it’s obvious since its price is just below $160.

But considering the price and the overall aesthetic similarities, it’s a very good alternative.

  • Rolex Datejust Alternative #1: Burei Automatic

Burei Automatic

The Burei Automatic is a homage to the modern Rolex Datejust, with a very similar case shape and design, no crown guards, and a fluted bezel.

The dial has the same layout as the Datejust, and it’s got that oversized date window with magnifying lens at 3 o’clock.

The watch is powered by an automatic movement, and the dial is protected by sapphire crystal glass, so even if it’s a cheaper alternative to a Rolex, it doesn’t skim on quality materials.

  • Rolex Datejust Alternative #2: Seiko SARB035

Seiko SARB035

The Seiko SARB035 is a superb alternative variant for the Rolex Datejust.

It’s a premium timepiece with a better price tag, and has the very features found on the Rolex, like the case’s shoulders, the beveled edges, the finishing, boxy shape, and the polished bezel.

Inside there’s a Japanese automatic movement which beats 21,600 times per hour, and it can be admired through the case back.

The dial boasts elegance with its cream white background, and super finishes on the hands and the hour markers.

The o’clock date aperture comes with a metal frame around it for even more elegance.

  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Alternative #1: Seiko Prospex

Seiko Prospex

Another Seiko, the Prospex , SPB243J1, is a superb watch on the more affordable side, as most Seiko’s are, but with that premium elegance and materials.

It’s a good alternative to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, but also the Datejust.

It comes with a 38 mm stainless steel case and bracelet, and a jet black dial that sets it apart establishing a nice contrast.

The dial features gold tone luminous hands and indices, adding to the overall elegance of the piece.

  • Rolex Oyster Perpetual Alternative #2: Citizen Eco-Drive Black Titanium

Citizen Eco-Drive Black Titanium

While the Seiko Prospex above is priced somewhere above $700, the Citizen Eco-Drive Black Titanium comes in a lot cheaper at only around $200, and it looks the part as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual alternative.

The 41.5 mm case and the bracelet are both made from titanium, the black dial matches the design as it should, with silver tone hands and hour markers, plus a silver framed date aperture at 3 o’clock.

Rolex Day-Date Alternative #1:  Hamilton Jazzmaster Day-Date Auto

Hamilton Jazzmaster Day-Date Auto

The very elegant Jazzmaster from Hamilton, in its Day-Date Auto variety, is a great looking and high quality alternative to the Rolex Day-Date.

The most impressive similarity is the day aperture placed at the 12 o’clock position like on the Rolex, making them alike.

The date window on the other hand is placed opposite to it, at the 6 o’clock position, unlike on the Rolex, where it’s at 3 o’clock.

Priced at around $845 and powered by the in-house ETA 2834-2 based H40 movement from Hamilton, with its impressive 80 hour power reserve, this is a watch to keep for a lifetime.

Or until you save enough money for the one it replaces.

Rolex Day-Date Alternative #2:  Seiko SGF206

Seiko SGF206

The Seiko SGF206 has a stunningly similar design to the Day-Date, though some features are missing.

The day is placed in the same location as the date, instead of being up at 12 o’clock like on the Rolex.

Overall, and considering the very minimal price of around $250, it’s hard not to take it as a superb alternative.

Sure, the quartz movement doesn’t compare, but you won’t have troubles with it coming from Seiko.

  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Alternative #1: Le Jour Le Mans

Le Jour Le Mans

Le Jour is an older name in the watchmaking world, forgotten but resurfaced recently.

The Le Mans chronograph is a modern reissue of an older classic model from their lineup, and comes with plenty of interesting features, much alike the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.

It also has very similar crowns, with the shape and the position matching those found on the Rolex.

Its price crosses way higher than the $1,000 mark, but it’s around ten times cheaper than the original Daytona.

Le Jour Watches

  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Alternative #2: Dan Henry 1962

Dan Henry 1962

The Dan Henry 1962 is a nice and very modern take on the Daytona, with the three sub dials in the same position, but a more sharp and elegant dial design.

The crowns are in the same position as those on the Daytona, but they don’t have the same shape.

The black tachymeter dial adds a little bit more contrast, being matte black, and overall, you can’t go wrong with this watch.

It’s one of the most interesting chronographs that comes under $300.

  • Rolex GMT Master II Alternative #1: Lorier Hyperion

Lorier Hyperion

If you’re after the look and feel of the first Rolex GMT Master from back in the days, look no further than the Hyperion from the New York based Lorier watchmaker.

It’s got that style and feel, though with a more subdued design and colors.

The features are interestingly alike, with an old school domed plexiglass crystall, and the lumed plexiglass bezel that’s very similar to the radium-lit bakelite bezel of the original GMT Master.

Lorier Watches

  • Rolex GMT Master II Alternative #2: Tudor Black Bay GMT

Tudor Black Bay GMT

Though it’s way pricier than most Rolex alternatives at over $3,700, the Tudor Black Bay GMT is probably the closest match in recreating the appearance of that Rolex GMT Master II.

That recognizable Pepsi bezel and the vintage aesthetic, plus the fact that it’s got a true GMT movement make this the closest thing to a Rolex.

It’s coming from the sister company, after all.

Rolex Submariner Alternative #1:  Gucci Dive

Gucci Dive

Gucci might not be the first name that comes to mind when thinking of watchmaking, and surely not one that comes as an alternative to Rolex, but their Dive model, is a solid and much cheaper alternative for the legendary Rolex Submariner.

Gucci Dive is a solid diver and a high quality watch overall, and that dial is strikingly similar to the Submariner.

The 40mm stainless steel case has a water resistance rating of 200 meters, so it’s the real deal. And considering that it’s priced around $850, it’s a worthy contender.

  • Rolex Submariner Alternative #2: Orient Kamasu

Orient Kamasu

The Orient Kamasu is a very good choice not only as an alternative to the Submariner from Rolex, but as a dive watch in itself, offering plenty of qualities for under $300, which is very rare these days.

It comes with an in-house automatic movement, a 41.8 mm stainless steel case, depth rating of 200m, sapphire crystal glass, and below, all the nice features that make the dial similar to the Submariner.

Rolex Explorer Alternative #1:  Seiko Alpinist

Seiko Alpinist

The Rolex Explorer is one of the most popular Rolex models ever created, and the market for alternatives is quite big, but the Seiko Alpinist easily stands out from the crowd for its astonishing similarities and the price tag of $750.

Part of Seiko’s Prospex watch line, the Alpinist is an impressive field watch that borrows plenty of design elements from the Rolex Explorer.

The simplicity of its dial makes it extremely likeable and elegant, and the Seiko Caliber 6R35 Automatic is a high performer with an impressive power reserve of 70 hours.

Rolex Explorer Alternative #2:  Vaer C3 Tradition Black USA Quartz

Vaer C3 Tradition Black USA Quartz

Coming in at just above $250, the Vaer C3 Tradition Black USA Quartz is an extremely good alternative to the Explorer, with that big triangle at 12 o’clock and the 3, 6 and 9 hour marker layout on a black background reminding exactly of the Rolex in case.

The 36mm stainless steel case also fits the profile, and the fauxtina lume, or the three link Oyster style bracelet also look the part.

Vaer Watches

A legendary brand like Rolex, with so many fans around the world, is sure to inspire other watchmakers to create their own replicas, in the hope that they would appeal to the masses who don’t have the buying power for a true Rolex.

And among the many Rolex alternatives we’ve seen, these are our favorites.

We didn’t feature any cheap Rolex knockoffs here, but excellent timepieces with almost the same design and features. We hope you liked our picks!

What about Invicta? Getting a lot of attention for cheap watches but at 200m water resistant? Its impressive although I have seen Invicta watches at $4,000.00-$6,000.00 range, I’m not talking about these! Its the $68.00-$130.00 range!

Rolex Yacht-Master Everose Gold

7 Best Rolex Yacht-Master Everose Gold Alternatives

  • November 25, 2017
  • BestWatchBrandsHQ

After seeing Alpha M’s beautiful grail watch which was the Rolex Yacht-Master Everose Gold, it definitely influenced me to consider one(yeah right…in my dreams). I’m drawn to the aesthetics of it and for me personally I like to vary the look in my collection and would prefer not to have too many overlaps. What’s unique about this look is the rose gold case, the black bezel and a black rubber strap making it look incredibly sporty and elegant. Since the price is way too out of range for a lot of people, naturally I would find other alternatives with a similar look and feel. Here’s a list of what I think is a good affordable alternative to it. Tell me what you think in the comments section below.

Steinhart Ocean One 39 pink gold

Steinhart Ocean One 39 Pink Gold

Steinhart is doing its thing again. Looking by far the most similar to the Yacht-Master, it comes with a reliable Swiss ETA 2824-2 movement. The 39mm pinkgold case has a screwed down crown and is water resistant to 300 meters. The double anti-reflecting coatings sapphire glass also has a date magnifier and a ceramic bezel insert. The indices and hands are coated with Super Luminova BGW9 lume and is paired with a 20mm black leather strap.

Seiko Prospex SRPC44 Turtle

Seiko Prospex SRPC44

This Seiko watch is also nicknamed the Turtle because of its cushion case shape. It’s hugely popular and now it has a gold tone case. This automatic watch uses a 4R36 movement, has day and date display at 3 o’clock, awesome Lumibrite lume, screw-down crown and is water resistant to 200 meters. It has a Hardlex crystal and is 45mm in diameter and 13.3mm in thickness.

Seiko Prospex SSC618P

Seiko Prospex SSC618P

This is more of a diver chronograph watch but is still very eye-catching with it’s rugged look. The case is stainless steel in rose gold coating matching the hour and minute hands and also the Seiko logo at the dial. This is a 43.5mm diameter, 13mm in thickness watch with screw-down pushers and is water resistant to 200 meters. It’s powered by a solar V175 quartz movement which makes this a reliable beater and is paired nicely with a black rubber strap.

Seiko Astron SBXB055

Seiko Astron SBXB055

With radio-controlled watches dependent of limited radio transmitters around the world, we see more watches move to GPS signals from satellites to adjust time automatically based on your location. This Seiko Astron is rather large at 45mm diameter and 13.3mm thick. It’s powered by the 8X53 solar powered movement which can last for 6 months if the sun went down. It has a sapphire crystal and is 100 meters water resistant. Other features include perpetual calendar, world time, dual-time, etc. The case is a nice rose gold finish, a black world timezone bezel and paired with a black rubber strap.

Casio G-Shock GST-W120L-1A

Casio G-Shock GST-W120L-1A

This affordable G-Shock looks rugged and cool with a slew of features like solar powered, LED light, shock resistant, radio signal time calibration, world time, stopwatch, etc. Part of the G-Steel series, this is a rather large watch at 59.1mm(lug to lug) x 52.4mm(diameter) x 16.1mm(thickness). This particular one comes in a tough black leather strap and has a more classic look with 3 subdials.

Casio G-Shock GST200CP-9A

Casio G-Shock GST200CP-9A

This is another G-Steel series but it’s powered by normal batteries instead. It has LED light, world time, stop watch, 5 daily alarms, auto-calendar and is also 200 meters water resistant. The case looks to be more towards yellow gold instead of rose gold and is paired with a black rubber strap that is smeared with some colors to create that dirty rugged look. It seems to have the exact same dimensions as the GST-W120L 59.1mm(lug to lug) x 52.4mm(diameter) x 16.1mm(thickness).

Casio G-Shock Gold Tornado GST-B100TFB

Casio G-Shock GST-B100TFB

This is a special 35th Anniversary release under the Gold Tornado series and as the series suggests, there’s a lot of gold tones including red accents including the back of the band. I see this including the G-Steel series is a little similar to the Hublot watches. Nevertheless this is a stunning looking watch with a carbon fibre bezel with Bluetooth time-sync with your mobile device, dual dial world time, solar powered, stopwatch and water resistant to 200 meters. Limited series with the 35th year anniversary engraving on the casebook. Dimensions are 58.1mm(lug to lug) x 53.8mm(diameter) x 14.1mm(thickness).

I got interested in that watch through alpha’s video aswell and after that one video you mentioned I finally know what whatch that is. Coincidentally I recently saw the Seiko 5 SRP560J1 on eBay, which in my opinion is the best homage and most look-a-like to the Yacht-Master everose gold. Take a look at it! 🙂

Hey, thanks for tip. Guess I’ll add that in the list as well. There’s also the latest one from Steinhart to check out.

Check out the Bulova 98B262.

Awesome recommendation. Thanks for sharing.

Seiko Yachtmaster Mod - Affordable But Stunning Builds

Seiko Yachtmaster

Photo credits:  @cswatches_official 's Instagram page

As an integral part of the group of timepieces that put Seiko on the map, Seiko divers’ watches have a storied history and complexity as timepieces. Evolving from their origin as one of the Seiko brand’s baseline watches, they have found a following in the watch modding community as baseline modders’ watches. As a result, Seiko has become a sought-out brand for watch modification aficionados with a motley of movements and mod parts that are easily available out in the open market. Follow us as we take a deep dive into knowing how essential the Seiko brand is for horology enthusiasts of diverse persuasions today, just how “moddable” Seiko watches are, and how you can recreate an exorbitantly expensive luxury watch using a Seiko divers’ watch.

Find some parts you'll need to build your own Seiko Yachtmaster mod in this collection.

Watch modding - horological counterculture?

People have said that owning and wearing a watch is symbolic of one's status in life. However, owning and wearing watches and timepieces can be more than that. They can also be symbolic of you, your traits, and your personality. By personalizing and altering components (modifying or "modding") of your favored wrist-worn daily ally, you create your own label or symbol for yourself and change how the rest of the world can see you.

Modifying a watch or a timepiece can also be a form of subverting typical cultural norms like capitalism and the manufacturing of various consumer goods, in this case, watches and timepieces. Some watch modification enthusiasts believe that their modding can be considered acts of defiance against the mass production of watches and timepieces. Although numerous parts for watch modification use have been mass-produced, watch modders' horological counterculture sentiments still manage to flare because of the creative flair that they showcase in their personalized pieces. With the wide availability of mod parts, watch parts, and their numerous variant styles, one can definitely and almost limitlessly exercise their right to express themselves through the modern art of watch modification.

Those who became part of the community have various reasons to enjoy customization. Some want to focus on tinkering with watch parts; some are curious about how things work. Finally, some want to achieve a specific look different from the original timepiece from the stores because they find the typical store items to be dull.

Now, don't worry if you're just starting to dip your toe in the watch modding scene. You're not the only one. Setting out to design your watch from scratch can be challenging. Every brilliant and skillful watch modder started as a newbie. And there's no shame in starting with little to no knowledge of watch modding - as long as you start somewhere.

Lots of horology enthusiasts turn to Seiko for watch modification purposes because of the brand's relative price-friendliness and the extensive accessibility of mod parts for Seiko watches. Ready-made Seiko mod parts and watch parts are always ready for purchase in stores, whether physically or online. Additionally, one can get ready-made Seiko mod parts from reputable businesses online, like a ceramic bezel. Now, deciding on what kind of watch you want to mod is essential to doing a decent watch modification. So you can go ahead and pick a commonly modded watch type from Seiko. One of the go-to watch types for watch modding is the discontinued but still affordably available Seiko SKX007, a divers' watch.

By checking on tips from the watch modding community and online support, you will find the information you need to search for and work with the parts you need for watch modification. Of course, the choice to have the watch modification job done professionally is also available to you. But where's the fun in that? After all, with all these continual periods of lockdown and quarantine, one might as well learn something new at home. Beginners may doubt themselves and feel discouraged about their lack of knowledge and expertise with watch modding. But with time, research, and repetition, such issues common to new learners will become a thing of the past. You can then focus on enjoying yourself and the whole process.

A timepiece for MODern consumers

The Seiko SKX007 is legendary. As mentioned earlier, this particular timepiece by Seiko is affordable, yes, but also timeless. Its classic looks have inspired many in the watch modification community to produce mod parts dedicated to it. It has a history as an ever-reliable watch that could accompany you to dive as deep in the oceanic depths as much as you can or need. That storied reputation made it clear for horology enthusiasts with little or no modding experience that it was the choice watch for personalization and modification. Why? Because it was durable. It could stand to get modded.

Although Seiko discontinued the SKX007, it has become a collector's item. In addition, a slew of imitative SKXs is out in the market. Some of the imitations are downright worthless, but some of the higher-quality replicas can be very convincing and might fool a would-be buyer into spending more than they ought to. The SKX007 was never meant to be a premium or luxury watch. Instead, it utilized an inexpensive movement paired with utilitarian parts, making imitation SKXs easy for replica manufacturers to create.

However, it might be better to build a Seiko SKX007 from the depths up, so to speak. The SKX007 was a great budget diver's watch at its best. It never tried to compete with other watches in terms of make and materials, and it was a reliable go-to watch for anyone that needed a quality watch that could work for years without any issues or need for service.

But for the more advanced and aggressive watch modder or horology enthusiast, rebuilding one could be the best way to express oneself with a one-of-a-kind timepiece. Especially since the problem with getting a limited SKX piece today is that it can be too expensive. However, if you were to buy it as a watch collector's item, that could still work. However, be sure to keep it in a safe place or compartment, and do not wear it too often outside of your home - if that's what you want out of your SKX.

For anyone that wants an SKX-style watch made to be used, it makes a lot more sense to build one. It could be more labor-intensive, but it is less pricey that way. After all, it would be a labor of love for any lover of watches and timepieces.

The Seiko Yachtmaster

A less daunting way of approaching a watch mod job for beginners is to turn to aspirational builds inspired by well-known watch designs or timepiece designs. Introducing the Seiko Yachtmaster modification build - a watch mod style that will surely never fail to steal the attention of anyone in the same room you are in. So let's dive right in! In watch modding, you can recreate the style of a more exorbitantly-priced timepiece for cheaper. And with vastly more creative freedom.

The Seiko Yachtmaster (YM) mod build is one of the most popular and well-loved builds in the watch modding community. One of the easiest ways to distinguish this build or style is through its bezel insert. There are several variant colors of Seiko SKX007 Yachtmaster bezel inserts, including silver, gold, and black, just to name a few. As a result, this build is generally bigger and showier than similar-looking builds like the Submariner.

Some Seiko Yachtmaster build choices that are available for you out in the watch modification world are:

  • The black Yachtmaster build  - one of the most popular builds because of its effortlessly cool appeal, and of course, black can go well with anything.
  • The golden Yachtmaster build  - bold and brustling, not everyone can wear this build; only certain personalities can aptly wear a full-on gold watch (but when paired with the right wearer, this Yachtmaster build will dominate any room it's in).
  • The silver Yachtmaster build  - perfect for those who prefer their statement pieces to be subtler; an elegant and sophisticated build choice that will look good on any wrist.
  • The two-tone Yachtmaster build  - features two different metallic tones (usually gold and silver) or one metallic tone paired with black or another shade; balance is key to the fabulousness of this build.

Inspired by

The Seiko Yachtmaster's notably bold yet classy style is, of course, inspired by the Rolex Yacht-Master, which first emerged in 1992. It was a timepiece that was so well-received and evoked such luxurious opulence unknown to watch buyers until then. It also seemed to be the market's first premium watch designed for luxury seacraft owners.

And who would have known that that decades later, the Yacht-Master would inspire and continue to inspire watch modders and watch builders of all levels to remake it, using classic Seiko divers' watches as their horological canvas? Of course, although Seiko's initial SKX line (watches and timepieces for everyone) is opposite to everything that the Yacht-Master was marketed for in the past, their styles just blend when paired together. And this is truly evident, especially when you come across a well-made Seiko Yachtmaster build.

A guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master

Over the years, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch has grown significantly, becoming one of the most diverse ranges of Rolex watch available.

The evolution of the luxury brand’s classic sports watch has extended beyond imaginable parallels, offering the avid collector various choices in bracelet style, bezel material and case size over three entire decades. As such, the Yacht-Master continues to prove itself a valuable and dependable mainstay within the manufacturer’s current catalogue, despite many models having become discontinued over the years. To define the Yacht-Master by Rolex, one would categorize it as a luxury sports watch, yet the collection can be broken down into two watches that remain incredibly similar to one another, despite a slightly different name.

. One is the Yacht-Master - a watch that can be considered the original sports model designed by Rolex, intended for setting sail with and enjoying whilst sailing aboard a luxury yacht. The Yacht-Master II, however, is designed for more precise functionality. Equipped with all the technology to enable an individual to record regatta timings, this younger distinction of the model is classified as a watch for racing a yacht as opposed to enjoying alongside a ride on one.

Whether wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master for aesthetical or practical reasons, however, its sleek looks and refined qualities are characteristics that are sought after far and wide amongst Rolex fans. Like with every Rolex, however, there are some factors to research and consider before investing in your very first Yacht-Master and these include pricing, history and features amongst many others.

What are the differences between the Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II?

To break down the key differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II, here are a few quick facts. The Yacht-Master is available in sizes of 29mm, 35mm, 37mm, 40mm and 42mm and is manufactured in Rolesium, Everose Rolesor, yellow gold Rolesor, solid 18ct yellow gold, solid 18ct white gold and 18ct Everose gold. The watch offers running hours, minutes and seconds and features a date function at 3 o’clock. A bidirectional rotating bezel has a 60-minute scale upon its surface and each model promises a water resistance of 100 meters. The models are offered on an Oyster bracelet or Oysterflex bracelet. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, however, is available in a 44mm size and is offered in a solid stainless steel version, as well as Everose Rolesor, 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold. Function-wise, the models offer running seconds with an adjustable countdown timer with a mechanical memory. The watch also features a ring command bezel, along with 100-meter water resistance and is fitted on an Oyster bracelet.

A brief history of the Rolex Yacht-Master watch collection

A brief history of both the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches is beneficial before investing in a model from this range. Though not introduced until 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master watch had foundations secured for its release much earlier than that. The brand had partnered with the New York Yacht Club back in 1958, laying down the roots to its heritage in sailing long before the iconic sports watch was conceptualized. By this point, Rolex had ready developed its first waterproof watch thanks to the 1926 Oyster case.

In 1966, the Gipsy Moth IV yacht was sailed 29,600 miles around the world by Francis Chichester, who wore a Rolex on his wrist amongst very few other measuring tools including a sextant and nautical chart. Thanks to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch he wore during his journey, time could be tracked amongst rough conditions for an entire 226 days whilst at sea. It put Rolex officially on the radar of seafarers as a manufacturer capable of producing robust and reliable tools for facing the challenging conditions experienced at sea.

In 1992 the world’s first official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master was released and was crafted entirely from 18ct yellow gold, cementing its status as a luxury tool watch. Over the next 15 years, Rolex would experiment with various case materials until in 2007, the first Yacht-Master II was born. Sportsmen could utilize this tool watch whilst regatta racing – its chronograph features stood out clearly and legibly across the surface of the dial. A programmable countdown timer enabled the individual to measure the countdown time before a race commences for improved precision and a better start to the competition. With flyback and fly-forward functionality, synchronization with the Race Committee was a breeze.

Current Popular Rolex Yacht-Master models

As mentioned, it is the Yacht-Master’s affinity with the sea and its diverse range of styles and case materials that make this collection so widely sought-after within the Rolex watch stratosphere. Paired with cutting-edge technology and primed for yacht race competing, the series has much to offer any luxury sports watch fan. Here are just a few Rolex Yacht-Master watches that have proven their popularity as both a tool and an investment since their release.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 126622

Rolex Yacht-Master watches made from Rolesium make for an interesting talking point to wear with elegant attire and often make for sophisticated gifts to mark an anniversary or wedding day, especially for those who prefer their wristwatches to exude a very classic look. That said, Rolex packs a lot of modern technology into the design of a Yacht-Master watch such as the model 1266, which not only offers a very compact and manageable case size for those with a slender wrist but has also been forged from a material that is exclusive to the Yacht-Master watch range itself. Stainless Steel and platinum are materials chosen for their robust, corrosion-resistant and luxurious properties, whilst the three-link design of the oyster bracelet creates a timeless look whether paired with elegant or casual attire. Polished middle links and brushed outer links create a unique look against the wrist, especially when you consider that these finishes differ from those seen in the Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller models, which instead offer a fully brushed bracelet finish.

Rolex Yacht-Master ref 116680

One of the most popular Rolex Yacht-Master watches has to be the ref 116680 with a blue ceramic bezel. Rolex had begun equipping its watches with Cerachrom bezels back in the year 2005. This model was made available in stainless steel, two-tone Everose, or yellow gold, and since it belongs to the Yacht-Master II collection, measures a broad 44mm diameter. As of 2019, Rolex Yacht-Master II watches were equipped with the Calibre 3235 – a trusted workhorse for many of Rolex’s models. Framed inside this striking blue bezel is a white dial adorned with a small second sub-counter in blue at 6 o’clock, along with a countdown that can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting and once launched, can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

WATCH REVIEW

Swanky sailor: reviewing the rolex oyster perpetual yacht-master.

yacht master look alike

In this feature from the WatchTime archives, we take a close look at the modern version of Rolex ’s Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master , with black Cerachrom bezel and Oysterflex bracelet. Original photos are by Nik Schölzel.

A water-resistant Oyster case, large hour markers and bold hands are essential elements of Rolex’s Submariner , introduced in 1953 and made for use underwater. In contrast, Rolex’s Yacht-Master, launched in 1992, is a luxury liner – equally at home on board a yacht on the high seas or on land at a ritzy yacht club. But to enjoy this luxury you’ll need to pay almost $25,000 for the 40-mm Everose gold and Cerachrom ceramic version shown here. Stainless-steel versions of the Yacht-Master are priced about $13,000 less.

The Yacht-Master was the first watch in Rolex’s Professional Oyster Collection to come in three different case sizes: 29, 35 and 40 mm. The model we tested, launched last year, is offered in two sizes: 37 and 40 mm. We chose the larger version, which we measured at precisely 40.19 mm in diameter and 11.49 mm in height (excluding the magnifying “Cyclops” lens for the date).

The well-known Cyclops date lens was patented by Rolex in 1953 and introduced in 1954 on the Datejust. This magnifying device is made of sapphire, like the watch’s crystal, and has nonreflective coating on both sides. The jumping date advances exactly at midnight.

The watch is powered by a seasoned caliber, the Rolex 3135, used in the very first Yacht-Master in 1992. The 3135 debuted in 1988 in the Submariner. The blue Parachrom balance spring was added to the movement in 2005, five years after it was first introduced in the Cosmograph Daytona. Its paramagnetic alloy resists changes caused by temperature variations and magnetic fields.

The Parachrom balance spring is thinner than a human hair and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks than a conventional balance spring. Provided with an overcoil, it is attached to a large balance wheel with a variable moment of inertia. Fine adjustments are made using four gold Microstella regulating screws. The balance wheel is supported by a height-adjustable bridge. The entire construction ensures rate results that bring the Yacht-Master (as well as the other watches in the Oyster collection) to the rank of “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” These words on the Yacht-Master’s dial mean that the watch has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC in addition to a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratory. Acceptable rate results for a Superlative Chronometer allow deviations of less than +/-2 seconds per day, while COSC’s test permits average deviations between -4 and +6 seconds per day. In addition, Rolex’s tests are carried out under conditions that correspond more closely to real-life situations than COSC’s tests and are conducted on fully assembled watches, while COSC tests just the movements.

We, too, tested the finished watch – fully wound and after running for 24 hours – first in five positions on the timing machine and then with a two-week wearing test on the wrist (or simulated on a winding machine). In our tests, the Yacht-Master remained within the standards specified by Rolex for a Superlative Chronometer. On the wrist it showed virtually no deviations over the two-week period. On the timing machine it showed a gain of about 1 second per day with minimal variations among the positions.

The tests performed by Rolex include a water-resistance check. Unlike the Submariner, the Yacht-Master’s water resistance is “only” 100 meters. This means that the Yacht-Master is not designed to be a professional dive watch , which requires water resistance of at least 200 meters.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional bezel also keeps it from being a dive watch. The bezel on a dive watch usually rotates in only one direction so it won’t show a shorter dive time if it’s repositioned inadvertently. But the Yacht-Master’s bezel is impressive: it has 120 ratchets and shows graduations in 5-minute increments using both Arabic numerals and line markers. The first quarter has well-defined minutes markers. Polished, raised graduations on the ceramic inlay stand in relief against a sandblasted, matte black background. The bezel is made of Cerachrom, Rolex’s ceramic material. The Ceramic inlay is set in a deeply grooved ring made of Everose gold, Rolex’s rose-gold alloy. A grooved caseback seals the case hermetically and can only be opened using a special tool. Three dots on the screw-down crown indicate that this watch has been sealed with the Triplock sealing system, a triple water- resistance system developed by Rolex.

The screw-down crown sits securely inside the case between two crown guards. Releasing the crown allows it to spring away from the midsection, which makes it easy to use for manual winding, rapid date change and setting the hands.

The dial has a characteristic Rolex look. The applied markers and elongated triangle at 12 o’clock are filled with Rolex’s luminous substance, Chromalight, and are displayed on a matte black background. The hour hand has a “Mercedes” circle filled with Chromalight and the seconds hand has a luminous Chromalight dot. The stark contrast of black and white ensures excellent legibility during the day; at night the Chromalight emits a blue glow for easy reading in the dark.

This watch is the first Rolex with an Oysterflex bracelet. (We use the term “bracelet” rather than “strap” because the Oysterflex, unlike standard rubber straps, has metal on the inside.) Combining a rubber strap with a gold case is nothing new, but at Rolex, known for its conservative approach to design, it’s a major innovation. The patented bracelet has a core made of nickel-titanium alloy blades, which provide excellent flexibility and are coated with a black elastomer, a synthetic type of rubber. When the material is subjected to tension and pressure, it returns to its original shape quickly. It resists environmental changes and is long lasting, waterproof and hypoallergenic – a good alternative to a metal bracelet. The bracelet’s black color goes well with the ceramic bezel and with the Everose gold case, presenting a modern, two-tone look.

Inside the bracelet is a patented cushioning system that increases wearing comfort. The bracelet accommodates changes in wrist size. The single-sided Oysterlock folding clasp made of Everose gold offers additional flexibility; it allows for three length adjustments. Screws attach the clasp securely to the bracelet. A safety bar makes opening the clasp more difficult but prevents it from opening accidentally.

gold on rubber = cool if one can afford it. I still prefer my S/S Y-M with PT dial & bezel = an understated goes everywhere quite comfortable piece. An interesting piece, shame about the poor out of focus photo’s !!!

May I request for an article or review regarding swiss made SELECTRON chronograph / computer watches made possibly during the 60s-70s?

That patent on the Cyclops would have expired over 40 years ago, meaning whatever it covered now can be freely-used by the public, I’m not sure it’s a bragging point (and, no, patents cannot be renewed).

This was a very nice watch. Is it automatic or manual? Do you know a good place to buy it?

Just aquired the YM 40 in Everose, stylish a touch sporty with a different look from my other Rolex’s.

Hey GW? Was wondering, since the article didn’t mention it, how is the rubber bracelet sized?

It actually comes with three different sizes, so you just pick the pair that works best for your wrist.

Sizing is a bit of a problem, I bought mine 2nd hand but never worn. AD will have various sizes in combination to make it fit. So if i were to sell it on that person may have a heck of a time getting it to fit.

Love the watch but I was told I had to wait a year to purchase the 40mm size in Canada. So, off I went and purchased a watch from a different manufacturerer!

Why make the consumer with cash in hand wait?

There are certainly other options available these days!

Old Caliber, a braclet which cannot be changed. What else can you expect from Rolex for a price about 24k Euro?

Yes, I agree. I don’t understand why they didn’t use the 3235 caliber.

Since spring 2019 they do use the 3235 movement.

Superb review of a superb Rolex. Thank you!

Hi, So does this mean that they have dumped the YM2 with its funny 10 second / minute countdown dial? I never liked the look of the YM2.

If they did it would explain why they are now available at Costco.

Truly lavishly stylish

Oh my goodness! Another lust object from Rolex (the origin of my watch, sorry chronometer, fetish). Faultless style and flash balanced with flawless functionality (OK, you can’t go all the way down). Opening my savings account now.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master is truly a fabulous watch and though it cost me a lot of money, I must say it is worth the money that I had to pay for it.

Over the years it has been quite accurate and did not cause me any difficulty till date.

Tudor vs. Rolex: Tudor Models That Challenge The Most Popular Rolex Watches

Tudor Vintage Oyster-Prince Ranger

If you weren’t privy to the fact that Tudor is a sister brand to Rolex, would you think the same of Tudor’s timepieces?

Tudor has persevered for many decades in the shadow of its more successful sibling, often gaining praise for their watches, though seemingly always mentioned in the context of Rolex.

Yet, many of their timepieces, particularly their latest releases, are outstanding wristwatches in their own right. On this page, we will be comparing a model from each brand in various thematic categories:

  • The Adventurer Watch
  • The GMT Sports Watch
  • The Essential Diver
  • The Luxurious Dive Watch
  • The Complication

There’s a lot that ties the two brands together as well as various aspects that set them apart, even within the same style category. Let’s take a closer look at what these are.

Tudor Watches vs. Rolex Watches

  • Heritage Ranger Ref. M79910 vs. Explorer Ref. 214270
  • Black Bay GMT Ref. M79830RB vs. GMT-Master II “Pepsi” Ref. 126710BLRO
  • Black Bay Fifty-Eight Ref. M79030N vs. Submariner Ref. 114060LN
  • Pelagos 25600 vs. Submariner Date 126610
  • Black Bay S&G Ref. M79733N vs. Sea-Dweller Ref. 126603
  • Heritage Advisor Ref. M79620TN vs. Yacht-Master II Ref. 116680

It should not come as a sudden surprise that many of Tudor’s propositions form part of the Black Bay line. The Black Bay watch family has been popular since Tudor launched it, and every subsequent variation has shared in the success as well.

The above links will allow you to jump down to a specific “versus,” though going through the whole lineup will give you a great overview of Tudor’s versatile watch models and how they stand up to its sibling’s most established offerings.

As an overarching theme in our Tudor vs. Rolex watch showdown, you’ll find that there are indeed very similar models within the catalog of each respective brand. That being said, Tudor watches lean towards a more utilitarian or “tool watch” aesthetic, while Rolexes are luxury watches in almost every regard.

Additionally, and to the surprise of very few, you’ll also find that Tudor watches retail at a significantly more modest price point, even when the specifications are near identical to those of Rolex counterpart.

Tudor Heritage Ranger M79910 vs. Rolex Explorer 214270 [The Adventurer Watch]

When considering timepieces from each brand that are intended for extensive outdoor wear, there are no better options than the Tudor Ranger and the Rolex Explorer 36. At first glance, both can appear very similar, but there are some key distinctions that set them apart. First and foremost, the case size. The Ranger is 41mm while the latest Explorer model saw its case size reduced from 39mm to 36mm. Though not a massive difference in case size on paper, those fewer millimeters are completely tangible when the watch is on the wrist.

Tudor Ranger vs Rolex Explorer Collage

While both models are sold on full steel bracelets, innate to an “adventurer’s watch” is the need to change the bracelet for a strap. In this department, the Ranger definitely triumphs as it has drilled lugs that make switching out the band a breeze. With regards to the quality of the bracelets themselves, indeed Tudor’s will be of an exceptional build, but Rolex’s Oyster bracelets are arguably the best in the industry.

Tudor Ranger On Bundt Leather Strap

Lastly, we consider the ever-important aesthetics. The Heritage Ranger appears more rugged than the Explorer 36 as a whole, with the latter being executed in a more elegant and premium way. This last point of contention will come down to the buyer’s preference as some may prefer the subdued look of the Ranger over the flash of the Explorer 36, particularly if they intend to wear the watch in settings where it’s going to get scuffed and scratched. The price difference, about $4,200, will also come into play.

Tudor Black Bay GMT M79830RB Vs. GMT-Master II “Pepsi” 126710BLRO [The GMT Sports Watch]

At Baselworld 2018, Rolex and Tudor simultaneously introduced “Pepsi” style GMT watches. Tudor Watches launched the Black Bay GMT 79830RB, and Rolex Watches the much-awaited Pepsi GMT-Master II 126710 BLRO.

Tudor Black Bay GMT vs Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi

Instagram: @rolex

On the other hand, the new Rolex GMT-Master II is a luxury watch through-and-through. Moreover, it has now taken a step into the realm of dress watches as its available with a modern Jubilee bracelet , a bracelet/watch combination that hadn’t been available from Rolex in decades. This latest Rolex Pepsi GMT also touts the flawless and shiny blue-and-red Cerachrom bezel, a glossy black dial with Chromalight indices, all of which are presented in the smaller and sleeker, 40mm stainless steel Oyster case. When comparing movements, it’s a bit of a tough choice. Yes, the Rolex GMT Master II definitely contains the more technologically advanced components, but the Tudor GMT is not far behind in performance. Both possess a GMT function with date, both are COSC-certified chronometers, and both have 70-hour power reserves.

Ultimately, the styles of the watches target two different customers: the one searching for the “tool watch” look and the other seeking a more sophisticated aesthetic. As a result, it’s not obscene to think of both of these fulfilling roles in the same collection.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight M79030N Vs. Rolex Submariner 114060LN [The Essential Diver]

Tudor and Rolex have decades of experience making professional divers’ watches. In fact, not so long ago, both the Tudor Submariner and Rolex Submariner were manufactured by Rolex. In the modern day, the Rolex brand and Tudor Watches are much more distanced. Specifically, Rolex has continued on its own path of luxury mechanical watches, while Tudor has taken profound steps to blaze its own trail and establish its own identity.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight vs. Rolex Submariner

Tudor Black Bay 58

Ironically enough, in 2020, Rolex released the Submariner 124060. This Rolex Submariner revealed that the case diameter had increased from the traditional 40mm to 41mm. In spite of the width increase, the watch retained its slim case profile. Both the Rolex and Tudor possess in-house movements, though the Submariner now boasts the latest Rolex 3230 superlative chronometer caliber.

Between the two, the choice will most likely come down to style. The Rolex Submariner is an absolute icon, and if you truly want a Sub, then nothing will fill its shoes. But those with broader horizons and potentially a smaller budget can look to the Black Bay Fifty-Eight to fulfill the exact same role at less than half the price.

Tudor Pelagos 25600TB vs. Rolex Submariner Date 126610LN [The Premium Diver]

Rolex Submariner Date Cyclops Magnifier Closeup

The premium diver is what you reach for when you want just a little more than just the most basic Rolex Submariner or Tudor Black Bay. For example, what if you want your dive watch to have a date complication?

In such a situation, you’d reach for a Rolex Submariner Date. Boasting all of the same technical specs as the base model Submariner 124060, the reference 126610 packs a date with cyclops and a price increase of $1,150 – and that’s pretty much it.

TUDOR Pelagos Dive Watch

TUDOR Pelagos with helium escape valve

With Tudor watches, however, the next step up from the Black Bay is the Tudor Pelagos. Unlike the Rolex watches, with Tudor, you get a lot more watch when you step up from the Black Bay to the Pelagos.

Newest Tudor Pelagos 25407n 39mm in Titanium Black

Newest Tudor Pelagos 25407N (39mm)

For instance, with the Pelagos you get a case and bracelet that is crafted entirely from titanium. The depth rating increases to 500m, and most of the models have a helium release valve. Most recently, Tudor watches introduced a new 39mm Pelagos model that makes the watch a bit more accessible while still retaining the titanium construction. Most notably, all of these additional features possess a modest price point, about $4,700, less than half of the Rolex Submariner Date’s retail of $10,100.

Perhaps a more adequate comparison for the Pelagos in this Tudor vs Rolex face-off would be the Rolex Sea-Dweller, seeing as how their professional diving specifications are more analogous. By comparing price points, however, it’s difficult not to instantly opt for the Pelagos seeing as how it’s nearly a third of the Rolex Sea-Dweller’s $12,950 MSRP.

Tudor Black Bay S&G M79733N vs. Rolex Sea-Dweller 126603 [The Luxurious Diver]

Originally designed for professionals who braved extreme depths in their regular work, the dive watch has had more than a couple of decades to evolve into a luxurious accessory. It can be argued that the standard Sea-Dweller model is already luxurious, if only by its price tag. Nevertheless, this has not stopped Rolex from elevating the model even further.

Tudor Black Bay S&G vs. Rolex Sea-Dweller Two-Tone

Image: Rolex.com

The Tudor Black Bay S&G, the two-tone variety of the top-selling Tudor Black Bay diver, was released in 2017. It also proved successful and leaves us wondering if Rolex may have taken notice and consequently devised their future release, the two-tone Sea-Dweller, in response. We may never know. Both watches offer a similar style, that of the gold-accented dive watch, at two completely different price points. Of course, Tudor remains the value proposition here, with its gold-capped bracelet links and $5,000 retail. The entire piece also boasts a more traditional “tool watch” essence that’s amiss in the Rolex.

Nevertheless, the Sea-Dweller is still a Rolex, one of the newest models, and it’s hard to deny that they’ve done a great job.

Once more, it’ll come down to budget and preference, with this Rolex Sea-Dweller retailing for $17,000. Either way, whichever you chose, you’re certain to be satisfied by the remarkable timepiece on your wrist.

Tudor Heritage Advisor M79650TN vs. Rolex Yacht-Master II 116680 [The Complication Watch]

Tudor Heritage Advisor vs Rolex Yacht-Master II Collage

Jokes aside, the programmable countdown with a mechanical “memory” is a very compelling complication. It may only reach 10 minutes, but if you’re wearing this $18,750 Yacht-Master II, then you probably want to keep close tabs on your time.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II Watch Comparison

yacht master look alike

Within the greater Rolex Yacht-Master collection, there are two very different lines of watches. Although they share a similar name and are even members of the same collection, the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are very different timepieces, both inside and out. Historically, the “II” designation at the end of Rolex watch names has been used to denote an evolution or upgrade to the existing line of watches. However, the Yacht-Master II is not an update to any of Rolex’s previous watch lines, and is truly unlike anything that has ever appeared before in a Rolex catalog.

So, what exactly are the differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Rolex Yacht-Master II? Read the rest of our comparison guide to find out.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II Rolesium Steel Platinum

Design: Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II

First released in 1992 as a luxury-oriented version of the traditional Rolex sport watch, the original Yacht-Master model did not have any specific features or complications that would make it specifically tailored to boating or regatta races. Featuring a fairly standard depth rating of 100 meters and a bi-directional rotating bezel crafted entirely from either solid 18-karat gold or 950 platinum, the Yacht-Master is a watch that is designed for those who enjoy the aesthetic of sport watches, but whose lifestyles do not actually require all of their highly-specialized functionality.

With a 40mm case, a traditional 3-hand display, and a dial that follows the usual Rolex sport watch design, the appearance of the original Yacht-Master can most accurately be described as a luxury-oriented version of Rolex’s iconic Submariner. Although a few key aesthetic differences help distinguish it from Rolex’s other lines of watches, the overall design of the Yacht-Master is one that is fundamentally similar to the classic Rolex sport watch.

In contrast, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a highly specialized regatta chronograph that features a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory that allows for on-the-fly synchronization to the official countdown clock with both flyback and fly-forward functionality. With a case diameter of 44mm, and a bezel (and dial) design that are specifically designed for use with its regatta timer, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a watch that was designed from the ground up for boat racing.

Movements: Yacht-Master vs Yacht-Master II

Although the aesthetic differences between the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are rather dramatic, an even bigger difference lies in the two movements that are used to power each watch. While one movement follows a conventional time plus date setup, the other is a totally unique and highly specialized movement that is unlike anything found inside any other watch.

The current versions of both the standard 40mm men’s size Yacht-Master and its larger 42mm sibling are powered by Rolex’s Caliber 3235 movement, which is Rolex’s latest three-handed, date-displaying movement that can be found throughout a variety of its current-production watches. While it does offer a longer 70-hour power reserve compared to the previous generation of movement, the overall functionality of the Caliber 3235 is not unlike what you will find from many other self-winding mechanical movements.

On the other hand, the Yacht-Master II houses Rolex’s state-of-the-art Caliber 4161 chronograph movement, which is made up of more than 360 components and packed full of Rolex’s latest and most innovative technologies. The patented function of the Caliber 4161 movement is so highly specialized and unique, that some of the parts of the movement must be made by UV-LiGA, a micro-manufacturing technology that has been mastered entirely in-house by Rolex.

Subtle Differences: Yacht-Master Vs Yacht-Master II

Given how little the Rolex Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II resemble one another, some of the less obvious differences can often be eclipsed by the stark visual separation between the two lines of watches. Among the almost endless list of aesthetic differences between the two timepieces are a number of other differences that pertain to a specific part or function of the watch.

From a visual perspective, the bezel on the Yacht-Master and the bezel on the Yacht-Master II could not look anything less alike. Consequently, it can be easy to overlook how differently they function, and how differently the various parts attach to their respective watches. The precious metal bezel on the Yacht-Master has a 60-minute scale in relief upon it, and it has been given bidirectional motion so that it can be used as a rudimentary timer. This type of bezel function is common on sport watches, and can be found on a number of different timepieces, from a wide variety of manufacturers.

On the Rolex Yacht-Master II, the bright-blue Cerachrom insert with 0 to 10-scale and “Yacht-Master II” name in large letters gives the bezel a truly unique appearance. The look is so distinct that one could easily overlook the special function of the Yacht-Master II’s bezel. Unlike traditional rotating bezels that are simply connected to the exterior of the watch, the Ring Command bezel on the Yacht-Master II links the outer rotating bezel to the internal works of the movement, allowing for easier and more efficient setting of the Yacht-Master II’s adjustable countdown timer.

Both the Yacht-Master and the Yacht-Master II are excellent luxury watches from Rolex; however, in terms of functionality and appearance, the two timepieces could not be any further apart. One watch adheres to the traditional form and function of the classic Rolex sports watch, while the other is an entirely new approach to the regatta chronograph that is unlike anything that Rolex has ever put forward. Due to how different they are, neither timepiece can be said to be “better” than the other. Instead, the Rolex Yacht-Master line as a whole benefits from the diversity of the various watches that make up its collection.

In the watch world, there is no name on a dial that carries nearly as much cachet as Rolex. Omega may have gone to the moon, Patek Philippe may have more prestige, and Richard Mille may be the new favorite of rappers and pro athletes, but none of these brands are Rolex. The Crown accounted for a quarter of all Swiss watch sales in 2020, a year that saw them reduce their production by choice. Everybody wants a Rolex, but due to their high price and, for some models, their scarcity, not everybody can get one. But there are Rolex alternatives you can actually afford out there, and this guide will show you exactly what they are.

Now, when we say something is an affordable Rolex alternative, that does not mean we’re offering you watches that are in any way equal to a Rolex. Watches are like any other industry in that, for the most part, you get what you pay for. The watches we’re recommending in this guide are alternatives to Rolex because of their similar styling and functionality, not because they possess the same level of quality. It’s like with cars. You can suggest a C8 Corvette as an affordable alternative to a Ferrari F8 Tributo, and you’d be right to do so! The mid-engined Corvette is a great car that offers some of the thrill, looks, and speed of a Ferrari — but it ain’t a Ferrari. Look at this guide through the same lens and you’ll be all set. So now, let’s get to some Rolex alternatives you can actually afford.

There are some who’ll say that Rolex is overrated, and there may be some truth to that. A small handful of companies arguably put out better products at lower prices, and the perception of Rolex as the be-all and end-all of luxury watches is a pretty tired trope. But Rolex’s reputation didn’t materialize out of thin air. The company has earned their spot as one of the world’s most trusted brands, and they’ve done so through three distinct avenues.

History: When it comes to Swiss watch brands , Rolex is a young pup. The brand didn’t debut until 1905, decades or, in several cases, over a century after most other Swiss watchmakers. But they really hit the ground running and their innovation led them to the top of the market in a remarkably short period of time. In 1914, they became the first wristwatch to earn a Class A Chronometer certification. In 1926, the Rolex Oyster became the first “waterproof” watch. In 1931, they created the Perpetual Movement — the world’s first fully-winding automatic movement wristwatch movement. In 1945, Rolex released the Datejust, the first watch where the date automatically changed over at midnight. We haven’t even gotten to the invention of Rolex’s most-iconic models yet, but you get the point. The brand changed wristwatches in a big way many, many times, and their reputation grew because of it.

Quality: You may believe they’re overrated or overpriced, but Rolex does not make junk and they never have. If you buy a Rolex watch, it’s likely to outlive you (provided you take care of it). And they haven’t slacked on the robustness of their offerings as they’ve moved into more of a luxury space in recent years, either. Rolex has a dedicated lab where they, essentially, beat the snot out of their watches in every way imaginable. A variety of machines perform over 20 different drop tests, water-resistant watches are checked for security at greater depths than it says on the dial, and one machine is able to simulate years of wear in a week to see how the watch holds up. These tests, combined with the COSC chronometer certification, add up to Rolex’s exclusive Superlative Chronometer certification. Backed by a five-year guarantee, it’s the company’s seal that you’re getting a product of the highest quality.

Marketing: As impressive as Rolex’s history and quality are, the one aspect of the brand that is most responsible for its status is its marketing. When looking at the entire history of the brand, one could make the argument that no brand in any industry has been as consistently good at marketing itself as Rolex. Right from the start, when founder Hans Wilsdorf chose the nonsense name “Rolex” for his brand because it looked good on a dial and was easily pronounceable in any language, Rolex has had a knack for convincing the public of its superiority. One bit of genius was the brand displaying the first Oyster watches in store windows submerged in fish bowls to show their waterproofness. Another was the brand associating its watches with greatness through early brand ambassadors. Mercedes Gleitze wore a Rolex when she swam the English Channel in 1927, Sir Malcolm Campbell wore one when he broke the land speed record in 1933, and Sir Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex Explorer when he climbed to the top of Mount Everest in 1953. Except he didn’t. Hillary had a prototype of the Explorer that Rolex provided for the mission, but he actually wore a Smiths watch for his ascent. But because Rolex’s marketing machine was so well-oiled, they were able to capitalize on the feat and associate the Explorer with Everest — an association that persists to this day, while Smiths faded away long ago. Say what you will about Rolex, there is no denying their prowess as a marketing tour de force.

Since Rolex makes the most popular watches in the world, it stands to reason that other companies would make copies of their watches. And they do. A lot . While we have no data to back this up, we’re pretty confident in saying that Rolex is the most cloned watch brand in the world. Many of these clones are replica watches; fake Rolexes that say Rolex on the dial and try to pass themselves off as the real deal. Just about everyone agrees that replica watches are bad — they’re basically forgeries. But when you come to the subject of homage watches, things get a little trickier.

Homage watches are watches that are meant to look like another watch but that don’t try to pass themselves off as such. For instance, many brands make watches that are almost indistinguishable from a Submariner, but they don’t say “Rolex” or “Submariner” anywhere on them. Homage watches sometimes tweak the formula a little, but they are always created with the intention of invoking a more expensive watch. Many watch enthusiasts have no problem with homage watches, but many others do. And because they’re such a lightning rod for controversy within the watch community, we won’t be recommending any homage watches in this guide.

Rolex Explorer

It may not have actually been worn on Everest by Hillary, but the Explorer is still an icon. Recently reduced back to its original 36mm case size, the Explorer maintains its reputation as the ultimate everyday watch . Its simple and symmetrical good looks can be dressed up or down, it’s robust enough to handle any adventure you come across, and its design is timeless. And while it’s one of the most affordable models Rolex makes, it’s still an expensive watch. But obviously, we have a solution for that.

The Alternatives

yacht master look alike

Good: In many ways, Vancouver-based Halios is basically the Rolex of microbrands. Their quality is best-in-class, their models sell out immediately and are often resold on the secondhand market for profit, and they have legions of very dedicated fans. And on their latest model, the Rolex comparisons are even more apt. With vaguely Explorer-like styling thanks to its cardinal Arabic indices and no-date movement, the Universa is a highly attractive and versatile sports watch. With its tall box sapphire crystal and Swiss-made hand-wound movement, the Universa at first feels like a vintage-style watch . But then you get to that angular case and brilliantly-finished flat link bracelet with an ingenious push-button quick-adjust clasp, and it becomes thrillingly modern. Putting it all together, we’re not exactly sure how to classify the Universa, but we know we definitely want one.

Case Size: 38mm Movement: Manual-Wind Water Resistance: 100m

yacht master look alike

Better: St. Louis-based Monta is another brand that draws comparisons to the Crown, and it’s easy to see why. After all, the brand was founded by the same guys who own Everest Bands, makers of the best aftermarket Rolex rubber straps, and all of their watches are Swiss-made and finished to a luxury level. The Triumph is their most inexpensive watch, and it’s pretty much a bargain version of a modern Explorer. Applied cardinal indices, 150m water resistance, and a galvanized matte-finished dial bring the field watch cred, while the rhodium-plated hands, micro-adjust clasp, and blue-glowing BGW9 Super-LumiNova add a touch of class.

Case Size: 38.5mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 150m

Vaer S3 Tradition

Best: A part of L.A.-based microbrand Vaer’s S3 collection, the Tradition field watch definitely has the looks to match its name. While not an homage, the watch’s triangle at 12 and 3-6-9 layout on a black dial certainly recall the most iconic iteration of the Explorer, the ref. 1016. As do its conservative 36mm case size, 100m water resistance, fauxtina lume, and three-link Oyster-style bracelet. But unlike a 1016 Explorer, you’re also getting a nearly-scratchproof sapphire crystal, as well as an American-made movement and American assembly, making this one of the most red, white, and blue watches on the market.

Case Size: 36mm Movement: Quartz Water Resistance: 100m

Rolex Submariner

Even if you don’t know anything about watches, you could probably pick a Submariner out of a lineup. Arguably the most recognizable watch in the world — and almost certainly the most imitated — the Sub debuted in 1953 alongside the other first modern divers, the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms and Zodiac Sea Wolf, and it remains the prototypical diver today. Looking flawless with everything from a wetsuit to a T-shirt and jeans to a tuxedo, the Submariner is the one watch that just about everyone wants in their collection. But with their prices growing almost by the day, it’s not as easy to nab one as it used to be.

Case Size: 41mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m

yacht master look alike

Good: When you’re looking at divers under $300, you’re going to come across a lot of Orients. That’s because the well-established Japanese brand offers a ton of bang for your buck, and they’ve been doing it for decades. The Kamasu is arguably their best diver ever with a sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, and in-house automatic movement that hacks and hand-winds. But as every Sub fan knows, the appeal of the world’s most famous watch goes well beyond the shore and is partly owed to the fact that it looks great in any situation. Thankfully for the Kamasu, the budget diver’s familiar-yet-original good looks ensure that it’ll be just as versatile.

Case Size: 41.8mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 200m

yacht master look alike

Better: Oris is one of the few remaining heritage Swiss watchmakers that hasn’t been gobbled up by some multinational conglomerate, and with the watches they’ve been churning out lately, we don’t see them in danger of losing their independence anytime soon. The Aquis is the brand’s top-selling model line, and it’s pretty obvious why that is. As a robust casually-styled modern diver, it’s basically the Submariner of the sub-$4,000 price range , and there’s nary a watch collector alive who wouldn’t welcome one into their watchbox. With a ceramic bezel, buckets of lume, 300m water resistance, and luxury-level fit and finish, the differences between this and the Rolex aren’t as great as you’d think.

Case Size: 41.5mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m

Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300

Best: Pretty much the consensus best diver you can get for around a grand, the latest iteration of Christopher Ward’s most popular model has charted an exciting new course for the London-based brand. The Swiss-made Trident is a true luxury watch masquerading as an affordable diver, as it’s loaded with high-end features. Diamond-polished indices, dual-finished hands, an AR-coated sapphire crystal, 300m water resistance, a highly-detailed “light-catcher” case, and the glossy polished dial are all top-notch, but most impressive of all is the fully-lumed ceramic bezel that’s been re-engineered to sound and feel better than any other bezel on the market (except one).

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 300m

Rolex GMT Master II

In 1954, Rolex created a new segment by inventing the first watch to track two timezones with a fourth hand: the GMT Master. The watch was made at the request of Pan Am Airways, who wanted a watch their pilots could use to track two timezones on then-new long-haul international flights. The current iteration, the GMT Master II, remains the gold standard for travel watches, especially in its original colorway with the blue and red bezel affectionately called the “Pepsi.” New Pepsi bezel versions are impossible to buy new unless you promise your firstborn son to your local authorized dealer, and they’re currently going for double the retail price on the secondhand market. Yeah, good luck with that. Here are some other options.

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 100m

yacht master look alike

Good: We certainly don’t have anything against microbrands who fashion their watches after vintage luxury models — after all, there are several on this list. But for our money, it’s always preferable when a watch brand is able to back up their offerings with some real history. That’s what Zodiac is doing here with the latest limited edition of their Sea Wolf GMT. This gorgeous “Crystal Pepsi” GMT is a modern-day reissue of a Zodiac Aerospace GMT from the 1960s. One of the earliest GMT watches, the Aerospace was sporting Pepsi bezels before almost every other watchmaker not named Rolex, and now they’re bringing the look back in a stunning modern luxury watch that won’t break the bank.

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 200m

Lorier Hyperion

Better: New York-based microbrand Lorier has one of the most consistent and quickly-established design languages we’ve ever seen. Despite 2021 only marking the company’s third year of existence, they already have a catalog full of iconic models that are distinctly Lorier. Their latest (and arguably greatest) is the Hyperion, a vintage-style GMT that goes the extra mile to try and recapture the feel of the very first Rolex GMT Master from the 1950s. To do so, Lorier not only features an old-school domed plexiglass crystal (like all of their other watches), but they’ve also included a lumed plexiglass bezel to mimic the radium-lit bakelite bezel on the original Rolex. C’est magnifique.

Case Size: 39mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 100m

yacht master look alike

Best: At nearly $4,000 — and slightly over that on the steel bracelet — the Black Bay GMT is by far the least affordable of the “affordable” watches on this list. But affordability is relative and, compared to what you’re going to pay for a Rolex GMT, the Tudor GMT is practically free. This is, after all, a legitimate luxury watch with a Pepsi bezel, vintage styling, and a “true GMT” in-house movement featuring an independently-adjustable hour hand. And since it happens to be made by Rolex’s sister company, that makes this the closest you’ll realistically get to purchasing a Rolex GMT for under ten grand.

Case Size: 41mm Movement: Automatic GMT Water Resistance: 200m

Rolex Daytona

The Daytona is one of the strangest Rolex models, as its journey to its current status at the height of the brand’s catalog certainly didn’t happen overnight. Debuting as a racing chronograph in 1963, the Daytona was fairly unpopular for a pretty long time. But the rising tide of interest in vintage models in recent years — especially examples that sport an exotic dial like those that was famously worn by Paul Newman — has lifted all Daytona models. Vintage Daytonas now account for two of the top-three highest-priced watches ever sold at auction, and the modern models are arguably the hottest watch in the world at this moment. In other words, you’re probably not getting one. Here’s what to get instead.

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Chronograph Water Resistance: 100m

Ball Engineer II Navigator World Time Chronograph

Good: Compared to most of the other “affordable” brands on this list, Ball certainly plays more in the luxury sandbox. But compared to the five-figure Daytona, this sub-$4,000 watch is a steal. It may ditch the tachymeter bezel in favor of a world timer, but like the Rolex, it does feature a tapering center-polished stainless steel bracelet and a Swiss-made chronometer-certified automatic chronograph movement. But since it’s a Ball and not a Rolex, you’re also getting a tritium gas tube lume that requires no charge.

Case Size: 44mm Movement: Automatic Chronograph Water Resistance: 50m

Le Jour Rally Monte Carlo

Better: In the 1960s, Le Jour was a watchmaker that re-cased models from the likes of Yema and Heuer under their own brand name, but the name went away during the quartz crisis in the 1980s. Now, Le Jour is back and is reissuing modern versions of its classic mid-century models. However, this Rally Monte-Carlo is the firm’s go at a modern-forward design. It’s a gorgeous racing chronograph with a dash of retro charm and all the modern amenities you’d expect, like an AR-coated sapphire crystal and a ribbed white dial with the offset tricompax display.

Dan Henry 1962

Best: Esteemed watch collector Dan Henry is one of the world’s greatest resources when it comes to knowledge of vintage watches, and thankfully for the rest of us, he’s sharing his expertise through his namesake affordable microbrand. Henry’s 1962 chronograph was fashioned after the racing chronographs of the early ‘60s, including, presumably, the Daytona. With a matte panda dial, black tachymeter bezel, and twisted lugs, the 1962 is just about the most attractive chronograph you can find for under 300 bucks.

Case Size: 39mm Movement: Quartz Chronograph Water Resistance: 50m

Rolex Day Date

All of the other Rolex watches on this list are steel sports watches, and though they were always on the higher end, they weren’t originally luxury watches and could have conceivably been purchased by regular old working stiffs once upon a time. But the Day-Date is different. This was always Rolex’s luxury model, and it’s only ever been offered in precious metal — gold or platinum . It’s nicknamed “The President” because LBJ wore one on the cover of Time magazine, and ever since then it’s been associated with world leaders, wealth, and success (Alec Baldwin’s watch in Glengarry Glen Ross ? That’s a Day-Date). And since you’re probably not running a country or a Fortune 500 company, you could probably use a watch that costs less than your car.

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 100m

Seiko SUR434

Good: Seiko is a pretty wild watch company, as they produce everything from sub-$100 watches to Grand Seikos that cost tens of thousands. This example is certainly from the lower end of Seiko’s offerings, but it’s still a fun (if slightly- homagey ) Rolex stand-in. Coming across like a hybrid between a Day-Date and another Rolex icon, the Datejust, this quartz Seiko comes with a minimalist bezel, Jubilee-style bracelet, stick hands and indices, a day-date complication, and most noticeably, gold-tone finishing everywhere you look.

Case Size: 36.9mm Movement: Quartz Water Resistance: 30m

yacht master look alike

Better: Tissot’s fanciest watch is pretty much a baby Rolex. The Gentleman’s classic styling was pretty clearly inspired by the Crown, and it backs up its looks with some impressive details. The pseudo-in-house movement from Swatch Group partner ETA boasts an 80-hour power reserve and an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring, the finishing is top-notch, and most impressive of all, the bezel is made from solid 18K gold. Not gold-plated. Not gold PVD-coated. Solid. Gold. That’s unheard of at this price point, and it makes the Gentleman an even more impressive stand-in for the Day-Date — even if it is lacking the day complication.

yacht master look alike

Best: Part of Hamilton’s dressy Jazzmaster line, the Day-Date Auto offers classic styling, solid specs, and a handy day-date complication. The “day” portion even sits above the 12 marker like on the Rolex , while the date is located at 6, offering up better symmetry compared to its far-pricier friend. The watch houses Hamilton’s H40 movement — based on the ETA 2834-2 — which has an impressive 80-hour power reserve, while the case and bracelet feature a nicely executed mix of brushed and polished finishes.

Case Size: 40mm Movement: Automatic Water Resistance: 50m

Best Cheap Alternatives to Luxury Watches 0 Hero

As we touched on, Rolex is not the only high-end watch brand worth considering. There are plenty of other brands that make watches that are just as good and just as iconic, like Omega, Patek, and Audemars Piguet. So if you’re wondering where you can score cheaper stand-ins for some of their offerings (in addition to more Rolex alternatives), take a look at our guide to the best affordable alternatives to iconic luxury watches .

Are you a fan of the Rolex GMT-Master ‘Root Beer’? Then, the Pagani Design GMT Automatic is the watch you are looking for.

This stainless steel watch features a highly legible black dial with a date display and two time zones that you can read with just a single glance at your watch.

But what makes this look alike watch special can be seen in its bezel, as it is made with ceramic material with a black and gold-brown color that mimics the iconic ‘Root Beer’ aesthetic of the Rolex GMT-Master.

#8. Pagani Design – Rolex GMT Master Batman Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

  • Dimensions: 40mm dimension, 14mm thickness

Our next Rolex look-alike timepiece comes again from Pagani Design. It is the same model as the previous one, but now with a different bezel color.

It features a 40mm stainless steel case with a synthetic sapphire crystal that protects its simple yet elegant black dial. Besides this, it also has a black and blue rotating ceramic bezel that makes it a good candidate as an alternative for the Rolex GMT-Master ‘Batman’.

Moreover, it is powered by automatic movement and has a 100-meter water-resistant feature, making it suitable for various activities, including swimming and snorkeling.

With its elegant design and excellent working quality, you’ll likely find the Rolex GMT Master Batman look alike to be one of the most affordable watches available on Amazon today.

#7. Stuhrling – Rolex GMT Master Pepsi Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

  • Dimensions: 42mm dimension, 12mm thickness

Our Experience With Stuhrling

Another look-alike of a much sought-after Rolex GMT-Master is the Stuhrling GMT men’s watch.

One of the core members of the Stuhrling Aquadiver collection, this watch model showcases a hard and tough 42mm case made of stainless steel and a screw-down crown, which helps the watch to be water resistant up to 100 meters or 330 feet.

It is also paired with a stainless steel Jubilee bracelet and powered by a highly accurate quartz movement made in Switzerland.

But what makes this Rolex GMT Master Pepsi look alike more special is that you can snag this gem on Amazon for a price tag that will surely not break the bank, coming in at less than a hundred bucks.

#6. FANMIS – Rolex Yacht-Master Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

  • Crystal: Sapphire glass

Our team are proud fans of the Swiss brand Rolex and its watches. That is why, after seeing this FANMIS men’s watch, we couldn’t deny its close resemblance with the famous Yachtmaster timepiece.

Like the Rolex model, this watch features a case with a polish and brush finishing, a gold and blue bezel, and a deep blue dial with a date display at its 3 o’clock position.

However, one difference of this watch is its movement because it is powered by a Japanese quartz caliber, which we think doesn’t compromise its precision and reliability.

In fact, this can be an advantage for people who are looking for a low-maintenance timepiece that keeps accurate time without the need for frequent adjustments.

#5. Pagani Design – Rolex Oyster Perpetual Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

  • Dimensions: 39.7mm dimension, 11mm thickness
  • Water resistance: 200m

Do you want to wear a fashionable and attractive everyday watch? If that’s the case, we highly recommend this Pagani Design timepiece.

It has the similar looks and feels of the classic Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches, with its sleek and timeless design that’s perfect for any occasion.

We found this watch to be not just visually stunning. But also comfortable to wear, making it one of the stand-out models in this list.

It features a minimalist black dial, a date window, and well-refined hands that are powered by the caliber NH35A, a Japanese-made automatic movement.

So what are you waiting for? Elevate your overall style with these Pagani Design Rolex Oyster Perpetual look alikes!

#4. Pagani Design – Rolex Daytona Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

  • Dimensions: 40mm dimension, 12mm thickness
  • Crystal: Sapphire

A lot of watch enthusiasts think it’s one of the best budget-friendly options for a Rolex Daytona alternative.

And after wearing one of them, we can now say that we honestly agree with this opinion.

Like the famous Rolex Daytona, this watch has a panda dial, a date display, and a similar looking black bezel with an engraved tachymeter scale that gives a nice contrast that enhances its overall appeal.

It also has a chronograph movement with two additional pushers to start, stop, and reset the timing function.

These Rolex Daytona look alikes are also available in different colorways, which you can choose from to match your preferred style and personality.

It showcases the classic design of the Rolex Day Date with its day and date display, Roman numeral hour markers, and the iconic fluted bezel.

These timepieces come with a gold-tone 40mm stainless steel case and have a water resistance of up to 100 meters.

This Rolex Day Date look alike is the perfect alternative if you want an attention-grabbing timepiece that you can use anytime and anywhere with a very reasonable price tag.

And to tell you the truth, not only does it capture the essence of Datejust’s design. But it also lives close to the high-quality standards that high-end luxury timepieces have.

So, if you’re in search of a gorgeous and reliable timepiece, the BUREI Men’s Automatic Watch is definitely a fantastic Rolex Datejust look alike.

#1. Pagani Design – Rolex Submariner Look Alike

Rolex Copies On Amazon.

And for our top pick for the best Rolex watch copies you can find on Amazon, here is the Pagani Design GMT watch.

If you look closely at the picture above, you cannot deny that this timepiece looks very similar to the iconic Rolex Submariner.

Like its inspiration, this watch features a black dial and a rotatable black ceramic bezel that gives this timepiece a very familiar and distinguished appearance. It’s a tribute to the continuing design of the Submariner, known for its timeless charm and outstanding functionality.

Yacht-Master II

Created for competition

The Yacht-Master II is the only chronograph in the world featuring a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory. An essential tool for skippers to gauge their best course of action.

Ring Command system

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it.

As a mechanical component linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

The countdown’s sophisticated functions were designed to be easily set and operated. The preliminary programming of up to 10 minutes is accessed, and then locked, via the rotatable bezel thanks to Ring Command, a patented system of interaction between the bezel, the winding crown and the movement, developed by Rolex. A technical feat made possible by the brand’s in-house mastery of the entire watch design and manufacturing process, from the case to the movement.

A distinctive aesthetic

The Yacht-Master II’s countdown can be programmed for a duration of between 1 and 10 minutes. The programming is memorized by the mechanism so that at a reset it returns to the previous setting. Once launched, the countdown can be synchronized on the fly to match the official race countdown.

On the right-hand side of the middle case, the Yacht-Master II sports two countdown pushers, specially designed to suggest winches, the manual winding gear on a sail boat. The Yacht-Master II is always fitted on an Oyster bracelet with a Oysterlock safety clasp, equipped with an Easylink comfort extension link.

The Yacht-Master II measures 44 mm in diameter, its large size contributing to the optimal legibility of the dial in all conditions.

Cerachrom bezel insert

The blue monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert of the Yacht-Master II is made of an extremely hard, virtually scratchproof ceramic whose colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays, seawater or water that is chlorinated. In addition, thanks to its chemical composition, the high-tech ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. The numerals and inscriptions are moulded in the ceramic and coloured with gold or platinum using a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.

Oyster bracelet

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology, designed to be both robust and comfortable. It is equipped with an Oysterlock folding clasp, which prevents accidental opening and the Easylink comfort extension link, also exclusive to Rolex. This ingenious system allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, providing additional comfort in any circumstance.

Complex in design, but simple in use, the Ring Command bezel is functionally beautiful.

Calibre 4161 Superlative movement

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with calibre 4161, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture, manufacturing quality and innovative features make it exceptionally precise and reliable. This abundance of Rolex technology includes a patented function – a programmable countdown with a mechanical memory – and comprises some 360 components. Some of them are made by UV-LiGA, a micromanufacturing technology entirely mastered in-house by Rolex.
