WHAT SELENE OWNERS SAY…

We wanted a compact yacht because we will load her on a cargo ship to explore new playing grounds like the Pacific Northwest or Northern European seas… It’s easily doable with a 42′ boat, and at a reasonable price. We want to see our new boat like a life enhancer and not as a financial or technical burden. This is why sizing the project, refining the specifications and a sound cooperation with the shipyard is essential, and Selene’s teams were ready to help from day one. We have found our perfect yacht…

I spent ten years as a full time vessel master and live-aboard owner. After obtaining my United States Coast Guard Master’s license, I spent countless hours cruising the waters of the San Juan Islands and the Canadian Gulf Islands.

Our constant, and the place we call “home” is M.V. Ellipsis, a Selene 60 Ocean Yacht delivered in 2007. We boat now without boundaries and enjoy navigating the rugged open waters off the west coast as much as we do the Inside Passage.

Summer and fall 2018, we will explore the Columbia and Snake Rivers, getting some experience with the locks on the river. 2019 should find us heading south in the Pacific, spending time cruising Mexico.

Even though my Selene 38 is the smallest in the range we’ve covered more than 20,000 miles in SE Asia; starting in Hong Kong, down to Vietnam and Borneo, then across to Thailand, later south to Malaysia and Singapore.

Everywhere I looked I was impressed with the quality. These are not production boats, but customized, handcrafted, solid vessels. Thank you for building us a beautiful and well founded boat! We look forward to many years of cruising in safety and comfort!

Built for versatility, these boats can be used in both salt water and freshwater. They are designed to navigate many different types of waterways so you can pursue many different species of fish.

Small lightweight and, durable trailer boats made of aluminum are most often used for freshwater fishing. Generally very simple craft, featuring riveted or welded aluminum hulls and bench seating, they can be operated in fish-friendly places - shallow water, coves, inlets - not many other boats can reach. Powered primarily by outboard engines, this type of boat offers both tiller and remote steering options.

These boats are popular in coastal areas. They can float and run in water less than two feet deep and are ideal for fishing with two to three people on board.

These family boats are the most popular in the runabout/sportboat category and are equipped with extra seats and forward access to the bow, a convenient spot to relax and sun.

Recreational by nature, Cabin Cruisers are generally equipped with cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities and are ideal for those who want to feel the sun above and the ocean below.

These open fishing boats are built to take rough offshore waters in pursuit of ocean fish. Rod holders, outriggers and other gear are common fittings onboard.

Cuddy cabins are ideal for day cruising, watersports, and other on-the-water activities such as fishing and swimming.

Deck boats have a wide deck to carry 6 to 10 or more passengers (like pontoons) but look and perform more like runabouts. They are powerful, too, making them excellent boats for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding

These small crafts are usually less than 10 feet in length, easy to carry on a car top or light enough to carry on board a cruiser. Great for use off the beach, or around the harbour.

This craft allows boaters to enjoy the two most popular on-water activities; fishing and skiing. This family fishing and recreational boat has enough power to pull a skier or two, and to get to the fishing spot in short order.

High performance boats are the sleek sports cars of the boating world, offering high speeds and precise handling to boaters who prefer their thrills full throttle. Marrying big horsepower with sleek hulls results in boats that are equally at home slicing through ocean swells or tearing up inland lakes. Cranking offshore or simply relaxing in a cove, performance boats deliver lots of smiles per hour.

Inflatable boats range in size from 8-foot dinghies for tenders to 30-foot high performance boats. These boats are suitable for saltwater and freshwater fishing, watersports and more.

Like bowriders and deck boats, they offer comfortable seating and sunning areas, plus a speedy and exciting ride. They are distinguished from runabouts by their propulsion system, which is enclosed inside the hull.

Large boats equipped with powerful single or twin engines, these craft are ideal for ocean cruising, navigating large rivers or the Great Lakes, as well as entertaining at the dock, and can stay on the water for days.

Featuring two or three hulls, rather than the more common single hull, multi-hull powerboats include designs for hardcore freshwater and saltwater fishing, as well as recreational and cruising, complete with expected amenities.

Lightweight and manoeuvreable, personal watercraft are the perfect option for boaters looking for an exciting escape and enjoyable time on the water.

Pontoon boats give families with younger boaters a secure place to enjoy the ride or toddle about when at anchor, thanks to wide decks and "play pen-like" side rails and gates. When equipped with larger engines they can be as quick as runabouts.

Sailboats differ from other types of boats in that they are propelled partly or entirely by wind; they use sails to transform the power of the wind into power that moves the boat through the water. The term sailboat covers a wide variety of sailing craft, each with its own characteristics and styles. In general, sailboats are distinguished by size, hull configuration, keel type, number of sails, use and purpose.

Canada has a rich history of sailboat manufacturing, and several manufacturers have made a name for themselves over the years. Here are some of the most notable Canadian sailboat manufacturers of the past and present times:

C&C Yachts:

Founded in 1969 in Ontario, C&C Yachts quickly gained a reputation for building high-performance sailboats, including the C&C 30 and the C&C 35. The company was acquired by Tartan Yachts in 2008 and continued to produce yachts under the C&C name until 2012.

Hinterhoeller Yachts:

Founded in 1959 in Ontario, Hinterhoeller Yachts is best known for its line of Nonsuch catboats, which were designed by Mark Ellis. The company also produced several other models, including the Niagara and the HR series. Hinterhoeller Yachts ceased production in the late 1990s.

Tartan Yachts:

Founded in 1960 in Ohio, Tartan Yachts moved its production to Canada in the 1980s. The company produces a line of high-quality sailboats, including the Tartan 101, the Tartan 3700, and the Tartan 5300.

Mirage Yachts:

Founded in 1972 in Quebec, Mirage Yachts produced a line of performance-oriented sailboats, including the Mirage 24, the Mirage 27, and the Mirage 33. The company ceased production in the mid-1990s.

Beneteau Canada:

Beneteau is a French sailboat manufacturer with a significant presence in Canada. The company produces a wide range of sailboats, including the Beneteau First series and the Beneteau Oceanis series.

Hunter Marine:

Hunter Marine is a US-based sailboat manufacturer that has a significant presence in Canada. The company produces a line of cruising sailboats, including the Hunter 33, the Hunter 38, and the Hunter 49.

Built to last

Unlike fiberglass, aluminum hulls are much more durable. For this exact reason aluminum became a material of choice for commercial and search-and-rescue and military operations, where durability is one of the key performance factors. ‍ XO hulls are manufactured using the best quality marine aluminum (AlMg4,5/5083), with maximum design stress of 113 MPa (ISO 12215-5). All XO models are build with an 8 mm thick keel, 5 mm bottom panels and 4 mm side panels, and are reinforced with honeycomb sheets. ‍

Anywhere with 50 knot speed

XO is a fast boat with excellent handling performance allowing you to make a good headway even if the conditions are not ideal.

To give you some idea of how other options perform, a single 300hp is said to be good for around 38 knots, while the single diesel installations should deliver speeds in the low 40's. With the largest horsepower option, twin 250hp outboards, the EXPLR 10S+ should be knocking on the door of 50 knots, maybe a touch over. XO DSCVR OPEN
