The historic Cornish gem that is Mylor Yacht Harbour…

mylor yacht harbour marina

But few of the international sailors gearing up their vessels for this year’s famous Falmouth Regatta Week would know that two hundred years ago, in the great days of sail, Mylor was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports.

In 1805 the British Admiralty developed the site as a Royal Naval dockyard and from 1835 Royal Mail Packet Ships were maintained here. Many of the buildings at Mylor date back to this period and the current Harbourside holiday properties were originally their hospital.

In 1866 HMS Ganges was moored at Mylor and used as a training ship for cadets. During this time and into the early 1900s the harbour served as a service yard for watering and victualing ships.

During the Second World War, American Navy personnel were stationed here to work on landing craft used in the D-Day landings. The harbour also served as a secret base for Free French Resistance fighters, from which they made undercover forays into occupied France.

As such Mylor is a place where past meets present – a thriving marine haven and working harbour which, with consistent investment through the last 20 years, it is now one of the South West’s busiest boatyards and marinas with first class pontoon berths and safe moorings anchored in some of the country’s finest sailing waters.

In 1997 new owners of the harbour set about a £5 million investment programme which would match the fabric and infrastructure of this Cornish gem to its sublime natural environment. This vision enabled the creation of a modern marina and onshore facilities, securing the preservation of the historic buildings, landscape and working traditions for future generations. Recent shore-side development has seen the building of a new yacht club, café and shops, shower blocks and a new marina office – along with the demolition of the dilapidated old yacht club in order to save and protect the Grade II Listed Quay on which it stood.

Mylor’s boatyard thrives and expands with its Marine Team of master craftsmen and technicians with the expertise to match any vessel – ancient or modern – from re-building or restoring the sleekest of classic yachts to the complete refurbishment of Cornish fishing boats. It is the only yard in recent years to build new, wooden Sunbeam classics – on exactly the same lines as their century-old sisters – which race together as one of the most competitive fleets in the country.

Mylor can accommodate boats up to 70 foot and a maximum of a 3m draft, with 180 marina berths and 250 swinging moorings. Mylor’s boat hoist has the capacity to lift 35 tonnes and there is a private slipway for use by Mylor Yacht Harbour as well as a public slipway.

Owing to a high demand for marina space the Harbour is currently in the midst of a widespread consultation into a project which could see more than £1 million invested in a small and sensitive extension to its existing marina which would create an extra thirty berths.

Berth holders have access to discounted fuel – petrol and diesel – as well as the modern shower block, electricity and water supply and use of the water taxi service. They can also take advantage of discounted stays in Mylor’s luxury self-catering holiday properties – Mylor Harbourside Holidays – and they have free shore storage, free parking and membership to Transeurope marinas.

New MD for Mylor Yacht Harbour

  • Katy Stickland

Neil Salter has been named as the new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall. He will replace Robert Graffy who has stepped down.

The new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour Neil Salter

Neil Salter

Mylor Yacht Harbour has announced that its new managing director will be Neil Salter.

He will replace Roger Graffy, who has stepped down after 20 years in the role.

Salter has spent the last 18 years working with Marina Development Limited (MDL), managing some of the largest marinas and their related operations in the UK.

He has also set up marinas in Spain and Italy and has consulted widely within the industry.

Devon-born Salter has now moved to Cornwall from Southampton to head up the state-of-the-art marine business.

Roger Graffy and Neil Slater of Mylor Yacht Harbour

Neil Salter (right) will replace Roger Graffy as managing director

Mylor Yacht Harbour has been built up by Graffy after he took the helm two decades ago.

Spotting its huge potential, he and his co-owner, wife Dinah, set about a £7 million investment programme to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marinas.

They aimed to match Mylor’s fabric and infrastructure to its natural environment.

Speaking following his appointment, Salter said: “This is a golden chance I couldn’t miss – a chance to use all my years of experience in the marine field, working with a fantastic team and building on Roger’s great legacy – all in one of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles.”

Nearly 100 people applied for the position.

Graffy explained while Salter was “the dream candidate”.

“We needed someone who would share our values and was capable of building and growing the business and all the people in it,” said Graffy, who will remain as chairman and, with Dinah, will continue to own the company.

“We also wanted to find someone who was better than me – and I’m delighted to announce that such a person exists!” he continued.

“Neil believes in building great teams, delivering excellent customer service, developing sites, working safely and maximising financial performance – all of which makes him our dream candidate for the job,” concluded Graffy.

Salter will be in overall charge of all Mylor Yacht Harbour’s operations.

This includes its marine team of engineers, technicians and boat-builders, its boat storage and marina activities and developments.

The search is on for a new managing director of Mylor Yacht Harbour in Cornwall.

Roger Graffy has announced he is stepping down from the post. Although he will be less involved in the day to day management of the company, he will still remain as chairman and owner.

Graffy. who had a childhood passion for the sea and boats, spent 20 years and millions in investment turning Mylor Yacht Harbour into a thriving, state of the art marine business.

He and his wife, Dinah bought Mylor Yacht Harbour in 1997 after recognising its potential.

Mylor’s enormous natural charm had made it a draw for the yachting community from the 1960s and 200 years earlier it was England’s smallest naval dockyard in one of the world’s most strategic ports.

The husband and wife team set about a £7 million investment programme “to establish one of Cornwall’s busiest boatyards and marina – matching the fabric and infrastructure of this Cornish gem to its incomparable natural environment. Their vision – and investment to date – has enabled the creation of a modern marina and onshore facilities, securing the preservation of the historic buildings, landscape and working traditions for future generations,” said a press release from the company.

Recent shore-side development has seen the building of a new yacht club, café and shops, shower blocks and a new marina office – counterbalanced with the demolition of the dilapidated old yacht club in order to save and protect the Grade II Listed Quay on which it stood.

“This has been a hugely rewarding project and a big part of my life,” says Graffy. “It’s taken all the energy of our fantastic team of 45 and support from the whole community including berth-holders, customers, fishermen, local council and holidaymakers. We’ve continued to thrive and expand the yard with our Marine Team of expert craftsmen and technicians who have the world-class skills to match any vessel – ancient or modern.”

One of Graffy’s proudest achievements with his team was realising a dream to build the first new classic wooden Falmouth Sunbeam yachts in 20 years – built in the Mylor sheds on exactly the same lines as their 90-year-old sisters.

“I’m about to turn 60 and Mylor has occupied my energies and enthusiasm for the past 20 years,” says Graffy, “so I think it is a good time to hand the helm to someone brilliant with the vision to keep this wonderful business and way of life growing and thriving into the future.”

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.
