Skippers of the supermaxi yachts preparing for Monday’s Sydney to Hobart bluewater classic are targeting a new record in a high-speed race they predict will go to the wire .

With northerly winds forecast for one of the world’s most challenging ocean events, Comanche’s one day, 9 hours, 15min and 24sec record for the 628-nautical-mile (1,200-km) endurance test, set in 2017, is under threat.

“It’s a race that could definitely rack up a record, especially with Andoo Comanche (in the field),” Mark Richards, skipper of nine-time line honours-winning supermaxi Wild Oats, said on the event website.

“It all depends on the actual conditions. But if it’s dead the whole way, I’d say not, but then it only has to change a couple of degrees and all of a sudden, it’s all on.

“If there’s breeze in the Derwent (River), absolutely.”

The NSW Bureau of Meteorology has forecast north-easterly winds for Monday’s start, which augurs well for the 100-foot supermaxis -- Andoo Comanche, Black Jack, Wild Oats and LawConnect - among the 109-strong fleet.

They are predicted to get off to a flying start from Sydney Harbour, with the winds propelling them down Australia’s east coast before they tackle the notorious Bass Strait towards the Tasmanian state capital Hobart.

Here are the key things you need to know ahead of the 77th running of the great race.

WHAT TIME DOES IT START?

The race will begin at 1pm AEDT Boxing Day on Sydney Harbour.

HOW MANY BOATS ARE COMPETING?

A fleet of 111 were entered into this year’s race but only 109 will set sail from the start line.

WHY ARE THERE TWO PRIZES?

Two main prizes are up for grabs in the Sydney to Hobart race. The first boat to cross the line at the Constitution Dock in Hobart takes home line honours (J.H Illingworth Trophy), typically awarded to the biggest, fastest boats in the race.

However, handicap honours, or the overall winner, is the more prestigious award (Tattersall‘s Cup), where boats are rated on their expected speed of the vessel’s size and other statistics.

There is a chance of wining both awards, although handicap honours is usually won by smaller physically slower boats to create an equaliser to the fleet.

WHO ARE THE LINE-HONOUR FAVOURITES?

The clear betting favourite is 30-metre supermaxi yacht Andoo Comanche, although LawConnect and Black Jack are also well-backed to contend.

WHO ARE THE HANDICAP FAVOURITES?

It is a much tighter field for the handicap winner, with New Zealand entry Caro currently the frontrunner while Sunrise, Alive and Andoo Comanche are also leading the way.

HOW CAN I WATCH IT?

The race, which begins at 1pm (AEDT) on Boxing Day, will be available to watch on 7mate and steam through 7plus. You can also follow all the action live on foxsports.com.au .

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE BOATS ONLINE?

Race sponsor Rolex has a tracker on their website using GPS devices for each vessel activated once it begins.

WHAT IS THE FLEET, COURSE AND DISTANCE?

The fleet ranges from 100 to 30 feet and heads through Sydney Heads then moves south down the coast.

Boats race down the Bass Straight and east coast of Tasmania and through Storm Bay, then finish at Hobart’s Derwent River.

The rhumb line — the shortest distance between Sydney and Hobart is 628 nautical miles (1163 kilometres), however yachts inevitably cover more distance as they follow the fastest route available.

WHO WON LAST YEAR?

Black Jack was last year’s line honours winner, taking out the victory in two days, 12 hours, and 37 minutes while Ichi Ban has won the last two handicap trophies, although the New South Wales yacht will not be competing this year.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Tips, Race Previews and Selections – 2021

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

The 2021 Sydney To Hobart Yacht Race casts off on Boxing Day, and a fleet of 112 will chase their place in Australian sailing folklore.

Entries from four countries; Australia, Hong Kong, Monaco and Guernsey have been confirmed while just three Super Maxis will chase line honours.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the Sydney To Hobart in 2020; the first time in its existence, and it is fair to say that Boxing Day simply did not feel the same.

I’ve run the rule over the fleet and provided my Sydney To Hobart Tips for both Line Honours and the Tattersall’s Cup (Handicap) below.

LINE HONOURS

Shk scallywag 100 ($2.50).

Hong Kong’s sole entrant has opened favourite in Sydney To Hobart Line Honours betting, and with no Wild Oats XI in the fleet, this does look best-ever chance of tasting success.

The former Ragamuffin finished fourth in the hotly contested 2019 Sydney To Hobart, and she has returned some lovely results recently; finishing second behind LawConnect in the Cabbage Tree Island Race and winning the annual Big Boat Challenge most recently.

Her performance in those key lead-up events suggests she’ll be tough to beat in the STH.

LawConnect ($2.75)

The former InfoTrack, LawConnect finished second behind Commanche in the 2019 Sydney To Hobart, and she has been the other clear standout in this year’s lead-up races.

Having beaten Scallywag by almost an hour in the Cabbage Tree Island Race, she was unlucky to be pipped by that rival in the Big Boat Challenge, having opened a clear lead at one point in that race.

Christian Beck has had his eye on Sydney To Hobart Line Honours for a few years now, and I am personally confident that this will be his year.

Black Jack ($3)

One Yacht that is always thereabouts in the Sydney To Hobart is Black Jack, and she is set for another competitive effort in 2021.

Having tasted success in the race in 2009 (as Alfa Romeo), Black Jack was second over the line in 2018.

She took a commanding lead in this year’s Brisbane To Gladstone, but was unfortunately dismasted. The other two Super Maxis do look to have the runs on the board this year, but Black Jack is certainly up to the task should anything go awry with them.

TATTERSALL’S CUP (HANDICAP)

Ichi ban ($3.40).

Reigning Handicap winner Ichi Ban has opened the $3.40 favourite in Tattersall’s Cup betting, and she is seeking to because the first yacht to win the honour three times, having tasted success in both 2017 and 2019.

She has finished third behind the two Super Maxis in both the Bird Island and Cabbage Tree Island Races this year, and she looks beautifully placed to win Handicap honours in 2021 Sydney To Hobart.

Alive ($7.50)

In my opinion, Ichi Ban will prove extremely difficult to beat in the Tattersall’s Cup, but Alive does look a bit of value at $7.50.

Ichi Ban’s two Sydney To Hobart Handicap wins bookend Alive’s impressive performance and triumph in 2018, and her crew clearly know what they are doing in Australia’s premiere blue water race.

Absolutely everything will need to go right, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see her atop the Handicap field following the conclusion of the 2021 Sydney To Hobart.

Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race history & betting preview | 26/12/22

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

No, it’s not the Melbourne Cup, ocean racing’s blue water Classic, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart which starts on Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day.

And with favorable winds being forecast, Comanche’s 2017 race record could be under threat.

With the forecast looking very promising for a fast race, bookmakers Neds ($2.40), Play Up.com.au ($1.90), and Ladbrokes.com.au ($1.70) all have Comanche quoted at odds-on to win.

Last year’s line honours winner Black Jack ($4) is back to defend the crown with 120 boats at the starting line at 1 pm (AEDT) on Boxing Day.

The race – considered one of the toughest on water in the world – claimed more than 30 boats last year as the fleet was battered by winds and wild seas. Two sailors had to be hospitalised as a result.

Tough safety precautions and other initiatives were implemented after six people died,, 55 sailors had to be rescued and five boats sank when the fleet sailed into a severe deep depression in Bass Strait in 1998.

The big race hasn’t even started and Martitimo in the TP52 is already out of the race do to damaged equipment.

Most entrants are expecting a fast race if the long-range forecasts prove correct which should set up a tremendous tussle between the big boys in the field, like Comanche, Wild Oats, LawConnect, and 2021 winner Black Jack.

Owner and skipper of last year’s runner-up LawConnect, Christian Beck said changes made to his boat in the past few years would make it better able to compete with the Supermaxis.

“We’ve extended the bowsprit (horizontal mast extending from the bow),” said Beck.

“When it comes to bowsprits, size does matter.”

“It’s all about sail area and if you have a big bowsprit you can catch more wind with a bigger sail.

“We’ve never raced against Wild Oats with the big bowsprit, so we’re pretty confident.”

A cannon blast will send the fleet out of the Sydney Heads, down the east coast to the notorious Bass Strait, and then onto the finish line off Castray Esplanade, Battery Point on the River Derwent some 48 hours later.

This year’s race has attracted eight international entries headed by Black Jack from Monaco and Hamilton Island Wild Oats ($5), looking for a record 10th-line honours after missing the last two years.

Among the boats coming Down Under from all over the world for the 628 nautical mile race are German racer, Online , Great Britain entry Sunrise, USA’s Warrior Won, New Zealand boat Caro, Hungarian entry, Cassiopeia 68, and Eye Candy and Poulpito from New Caledonia.

The Supermaxis or 100-footer boats will be hoping for favorable winds and weather to attack the 2017 race record of one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds.

Last year’s race was one of the slowest on record but conditions are expected to be a lot better this year, giving navigators a chance to plot a new race record.

Even so, the forecast for fast conditions early with a tailwind down the coast for the first 24 to 36 hours and winds up to 25knots, brings with it an assortment of risks, including capsizing, broken gear, on-boat mishaps and injuries as conditions, especially for the smaller boats, become uncomfortable.

Some of the survival stories told at the end of this great race are inspiring as it often takes a huge toll on humans and boats.

However, the forecast for northerly wins all the way down the east coast put a smile on the faces of boat navigators, especially those aboard the Supermaxis like Comanche and Hamilton Island Wild Oats.

“Strong winds bring big seas so boat management and safety become priorities,” said Patrice’s navigator, Michael Bellingham.

The inaugural Sydney to Hobart yacht race had nine boats and was won by Rani, skippered by John Illingworth.

The race took over six-and-a-half days to complete.

All going well, this year’s winner should be known on Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

Rolex Sydney Hobart: How to win the legendary race

Yachting World

  • December 21, 2023

World and European Championship-winning professional navigator, Tom Cheney, gives his advice on how to win the Rolex Sydney Hobart race

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race stands as a pinnacle of offshore yacht racing. Its reputation as the hardest of the classic offshore races is well deserved. Compared to the northern hemisphere 600-milers, for example the Fastnet and Middle Sea Races , the 628-mile Sydney Hobart is much more remote. Once out of Sydney Harbour, you quickly lose mobile phone signal and are left feeling isolated from the rest of the world, something which feels quite alien to most of us in 2023.

The New South Wales coast offers relatively few safe havens should you need to retire from the race, though this is nothing compared to the sense of exposure sailing in the Bass Strait. A fetch of thousands of miles of Southern Ocean and chilling sea temperatures create some of the most challenging conditions that many of us will ever experience. It’s easy to see why this race has significantly stricter safety regulations than its northern hemisphere equivalents.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

Huge spectator fleets, and three start lines, make for a challenging but spectacular send off for competitors in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race. Photo: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi

Exiting the Heads

The race begins with a true spectacle in Sydney Harbour, where hundreds of Australians gather to watch the start in a now well-established Boxing Day tradition. Television news helicopters, a packed spectator fleet and some key exclusion zones add to the excitement as you make your way out of the iconic Sydney Heads. Unlike many other big races the whole fleet starts at the same time, but spread across three staggered start lines. In order to make the race the same 628-mile length for everyone, the first two turning marks differ depending on your starting group (an extra complexity for the navigator!).

Typically the fleet starts in a north-easterly breeze, which means a fairly square beat to the first mark. The separate starting areas do help to ease the traffic a little for the smaller boats, but keeping a clean lane is paramount as you bounce off the marked spectator boundaries. After mark one, reaching for just over a mile out through the Heads can be a tussle, with plenty of boats still in close proximity. Sea state builds as you leave the harbour and there’s not long to prepare for what is usually (initially) a VMG downwind leg down the New South Wales coast.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

Choosing how to negotiate the East Australian Current is the first major decision for navigators.

New South Wales coast

After the excitement of leaving Sydney Harbour, navigators now encounter their first major decision point: choosing the route south through the East Australian Current (EAC) and anticipating any cold fronts that may be moving north-east up the course.

The EAC is a surface current driven by winds over the South Pacific. Usually it is south-flowing between Sydney and Bass Strait with large gyres and meandering eddies. The flow of the EAC is ever changing, but luckily there are some good models and observations that can help you pick your way south. For routing the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a seven-day forecast called OceanMAPS and there is also a four-hour sea surface temperature observation from IMOS which gives you a good idea of where the eddies are relative to the forecast.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

The smaller yachts in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race faced a period of intense upwind sailing. Photo: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi

The trick is to pick a couple of waypoints where you think the best current is going to be and then try to connect the dots. Weighing up your best shot at positive current against positioning for a front/shift is the big challenge here. As you get further south towards the entrance to the strait, you also need to consider the considerable wind bend as the prevailing westerly wind wraps around the south coast.

Bass Strait

The Bass Strait is notorious for its rough seas and volatile weather. If there’s a cold front moving north and east then pleasant, fast downwind conditions can turn into hard, cold upwind conditions very quickly. A big change in wind direction like this often means a potentially boat-breaking confused sea state. The strait can serve up some of the most challenging conditions in ocean racing, with strong westerly winds known as the ‘Roaring Forties’.

Anticipating a big change in conditions like this, and being appropriately prepared, are an absolute necessity for every boat in the race. The ECMWF and GFS global models can be used to track the big picture weather systems and for running weather routing. There is also an Australian ACCESS model, based on the UK Met Office’s Unified Model. This is not so easy to get hold of, but for those taking the race very seriously, the legendary forecaster Roger ‘Clouds’ Badham provides some GRIB file downloads to teams he is forecasting for.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

Approaching Tasmania

Approaching Tasmania the race enters its tactical endgame. The coastline offers shelter and potential wind shadows, which can be both a blessing and a curse. Choosing when to head offshore for wind or inshore for shelter is often the key to this stage.

Weather in the aptly named Storm Bay can be very unpredictable. The area can be becalmed, leaving yachts stranded for hours, or it can be struck by sudden storms, particularly in the afternoon when the heat from the land can generate strong sea breezes or thunderstorms.

The fetch across the bay can build up substantial waves and the wind can accelerate around the Tasman Peninsula, creating gusty and unstable conditions.

Some of these local features are not captured by typical weather models, so keep an eye on observations and any competitors you can see ahead of you on AIS. There are some high resolution WRF weather models for Hobart available through Nick White’s Expedition navigation software that do a good job of modelling some of these local effects.

Famously fickle breezes can hamper boats in Hobart’s River Derwent at the finish. Photo: Rolex/Carlo Borlenghi

The final approach to Hobart is up the Derwent River, where winds can be fickle, and many a lead has been lost in these final miles. If you’re lucky then you might finish in a nice afternoon sea breeze, those less fortunate can be becalmed for hours, particularly when finishing at night or in the early hours.

Race like no other

Finishing the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is a significant achievement in itself and the reception all boats receive is unlike anywhere else. Whatever time of day, finishing teams are greeted by a cheering crowd at Constitution Dock and the Elizabeth St Pier. It’s also pretty much mandatory to stop at the Customs House pub for a debrief and to exchange stories from the great race.

Wrapping things up...

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

We've ticked past 6pm AEDT, and the latest positions remain the same.

LawConnect sits 13 nautical miles east of Kiama, leading by 2.9 nautical miles from Black Jack.

Scallywag is a further 0.9 nautical miles behind, with Stefan Racing in fourth, 7.9 nautical miles behind LawConnect.

However the third and fourth place boats are going faster than their rivals, with Scallywag at 14.9 knots and Stefan Racing at 15.1 knots, compared to 12.9 for LawConnect and 13.3 for Black Jack.

These are small margins, but it suggests Scallywag is back making the most of the wind. If the crew can keep that going for the rest of the evening, they might be a lot closer to the lead by the end of the night.

Hmmm ... some weather approaching!

As we speak, LawConnect and the leading boats are just passing Kiama on the NSW Coast.

So far things have been relatively straightforward, aside from Scallywag's sail issues.

However ...

A quick scan of the BOM radar shows there is some heavy weather (well some heavy rain at least) heading the way of the fleet (see attached map):

Tracking individual boats

can you explain how on the tracker i can monitor a yacht i bet on ive got ichi ban -Scott

Scott, I have been having the odd-bit of trouble with the tracker this afternoon, trying to isolate particular boats has proved interesting..

However, if you go to the standings page on the website, and click the tab saying "Fully Crewed IRC", that should give you the updated placings on handicap, and the estimated finishing times.for whichever boat you want.

For example, Ichi Ban on the latest standings is 15th for line honours, 17.9 nautical miles behind LawConnect.

On IRC, Ichi Ban is 53rd - at this point the estimated race time is three days, 19 hours six minutes and 51 seconds, giving an arrival time of Dec 30 at 8:06.51am. On corrected time, (the right hand column), the overall time would be five days, seven hours, 55 minutes 27 seconds.

In comparison, the leader on IRC (for now) is LawConnect , estimated to finish at 6:51pm on Dec 28, for a time of two days, five hours, 51 minutes 46 seconds.

On corrected time, this gives LawConnect an overall time of four days, 10 hours, 38 minutes 54 seconds.

As the winds and circumstances change, so will the overall standings. But for now, Ichi Ban has a LOT of room to make up.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

So far, so good ...

At this point of the race, a quick update.

Officially we had 88 boats to start with - 71 eligible for line honours and 17 two-handed boats, allowed in the race for the first time.

As of the latest figures, all 88 are still in the race, which means no one has had a significant problem or damage to the boat. That's good to hear!

There was some talk with the forecasted southerly winds this afternoon and tonight that there might be some retirements in the fleet.

Who's to know? At this stage it may be that the winds aren't quite as strong as expected, but there is plenty of time for that to change. Also, for smaller boats particularly, it may be the accumulated wear and tear of hitting bigger waves that causes problems overnight.

We shall see.

First updated standings as of 4pm AEDT:

Here is the top 12 on line honours, with LawConnect having a DTG (distance to go) of 596.3 nautical miles, ahead of Black Jack , with a DTG of 597.8 nautical miles. So LawConnect as of 4pm AEDT had a lead of 1.5 nautical miles. That appears to have changed since, but this gives a snapshot of where the leading boats were 20-odd minutes ago:

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

The hours into the race, the leaders are a solid distance offshore, halfway between Helensburgh and Wollongong.

LawConnect still leads, and has extended the margin over Black Jack to 1.4 nautical miles. It's relatively middling going for the leaders, with LawConnect's speed at 13 knots, ahead of Black Jack's 12.5 knots.

Behind them, Scallywag is clear again in third, 2.6 nautical miles astern of LawConnect - it is moving at 12.3 knots but does not seem to be able to get too close to the leaders. There is no more word on the state of their sails and whether they have been able to get the main headsail going again.

Stefan Racing is in fourth, a further one nautical mile back from Scallywag.

Coasters Retreat and the origins of the Sydney to Hobart

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

Michael Troy has written a great feature on the small community of Coasters Retreat, near Pittwater in Sydney.

In the 1940s Coasters was home to several sailors - some famous, some not so but all with interesting stories.

The home of Selwyn “Dicko” Dickinson was the meeting place for the sailors, and where the idea that turned into the Sydney to Hobart we know today was conceived.

This group broke free of the Royal Prince Alfred Club and began sailing at Broken Bay and elsewhere as a rebel club. This turned into the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, and an original nine boats who “raced” to Hobart as a cruise, with the big prize on offer of a dozen bottles of beer and a jam tin mounted on a wooden block.

You can find out more about the sailors from Coasters Retreat in Michael Troy’s feature here.

Flashback to the start...

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

As it stands, there are 10 boats - including race leader LawConnect - within 4.5 nautical miles or thereabouts at the front of the race.

Always happy for a shoutout

Hi Andrew 🙂 -Natty

Hello Natty, glad to see you on the blog - hope you can stick around for a while, as the further we get down the coast this afternoon, the more likely it is that we will start to sort out the relative strengths of the leading contenders.

Let's hope that the expected "bash and crash" of stronger winds that are pushing against the fleet doesn't lead to too many problems on board boats.

As we've seen already with Scallywag, problems can occur even in relatively light winds, and when the windspeed gets turned up, things can go really wrong.

A quick snapshot from the tracker shows where things stand at this point.

You can see Scallywag two back from the leader - Stefan Racing is just to its left, although the name isn't registering.

The orange boat icon on the left is the pace for the race record of Comanche in 2017.

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

We've got an early challenger from outside the supermaxis!

We have focused so far mostly on the three supermaxis - with good reason, since the last time a supermaxi did not win line honours was in 2004.

But as things stand, we have another boat in the mix.

Race leader LawConnect is travelling at 17.6 knots, followed 1.8 nautical miles back by Black Jack (11.8 knots).

While Scallywag is going a little faster at 12.6 knots, it has been overtaken for third place, at least for the moment.

Stefan Racing, the Botin 80 boat skippered by Grant 'Wharo" Wharington , is going nicely at 11.5 knots, a little over 1.8 nautical miles behind the leader, Stefan Racing is - to use a racing analogy - saving ground a little closer to the coast.

The question of how the leading boats will handle the winds this afternoon and evening will tell us a lot about who is in prime position to win the race.

The small orange sail you can see in the previous pic tweet from SHK Scallywag is the storm jib.

With far less surface area on the sail to work with, it means the boat cannot take full advantage of the wind available.

This is why things are going to be difficult ...

sydney to hobart yacht race betting

This colour-coded map shows the wind speed and wind direction in the waters off the NSW coast right now.

The arrows show that the wind is coming from the south directly north, so the fleet is heading into the teeth of what wind there is.

The green colour marks around 15 to 20 knots (27.8 to 37 kmh).

The orange colour shows winds that are between 25 and 30 knots (46.3 to 55.5kmh).

So the area the fleet is heading into is mostly orange, which means it will be more difficult to make headway into the wind.

This map shows why there will be not the slightest chance of a race record, and indeed the likelihood is that the leaders will not reach Hobart inside two days.

The official standings will not kick in for another couple of hours, but at this stage is appears that LawConnect is a decent way in front, travelling at a tick over 14 knots.

Most of the boats are heading out to sea to get the best of the wind, rather than hugging the coast. The only entry that is keeping closer in is No Limit in about ninth spot right now.

Black Jack is moving at 13.3 knots, with Scallywag still suffering from the lack of its preferred sail, going at 11.3 knots.

The wind is not that strong at this point - we are expecting things to shift reasonably soon, with strong southeasterlies making life tough for everyone.
