SAILING YACHT DESIGN

Mandate Concern for the structural design of sailing yachts and other craft. Consideration shall be given to the materials selection, fabrication techniques and design procedures for yacht hull, rig and appendage structures. The role of standards, safety and reliability in the design and production processes should be addressed. Attention should be given to fluid-structure interaction effects on hulls, rigs and appendages and their influence on structural design.

This paper aims to investigate a hull form design procedure for large low speed motor yacht forms and presents three example cases involving bulbous bow, transom wedge and appendage design. The procedure is based on a combination of mathematical optimisation, panel methods and towing tank testing. An initial hull form is chosen and mathematical programming technique is utilised to minimise the total resistance consisting of frictional drag by ITTC 1957 line and wave resistance by Mitchell integral. The hull is approximated with tent functions. A number of design constraints have been applied and quadratic programming is utilised to find an optimum bulbous bow form. Alternative hull forms are tested first numerically with a wave-making calculation procedure based on Dawson's algorithm. The chosen form is then tested in the towing tank for both total resistance and wave pattern resistance. This sections focuses on the most complex aspects of ship structural design preliminary design. While concept and detail design are concerned with overall requirements and standard formats, it is in preliminary design the sizing of all of the ship's principal structural members that the structural designer has the largest significant decisions and options, and the greatest scope for optimizing the design. One of the advantages of this approach is that, unlike all earlier design methods, it applies to all types of ships. Moreover, this approach allows the designer to achieve an optimum structure, according to his own particular measure of merit, such as least life-cycle cost, least weight, or any combination of these. As in most structures, the principal dimensions of a ship design are usually not determined by structural considerations, but rather by more general requirements, such as beam and draft limitations, required cargo capacity, and so on. For this reason, structural design usually begins with the principal dimensions already established. The designer must determine the complete set of scantlings that provide adequate strength and safety for least cost. Structural design consists of two distinct levels:  Preliminary design to determine location, spacing, and scantlings of principal structural members  Detail design to determine geometry and scantlings of local structures (brackets, connections, cutouts , reinforcements, etc.) The required thickness of each plate, the required section modulus for longitudinal stiffeners, transverse frames, bulkheads, and the longitudinal hull girder strength are determined to withstand the load that is going to apply to the vessel during operation. Interest in multihull sailing craft has been steadily increasing since the end of World War II. Early postwar development was centered mostly around day sailers and racers, but during the past ten years considerable numbers of cruising multihulls have been built-mostly by amateurs. Many of the designs also were prepared by amateurs, resulting in numerous failures both in structure and performance. On the other hand, there have been so many successful, long-distance ocean passages, in both trimaran and catamaran, that these craft deserve closer examination by professional designers. This paper is a review of current practices in the design, construction, performance, and habitability, of all types of multihull sailing craft, including several comparisons with monohull craft.

What you record in your logbook depends on what you are doing. Just a quick note of the tides and weather forecast may suffice for a short day-sail, but an offshore passage will require very much more.

Commercially produced logbooks never seem to be quite right for you and your boat; they are expensive and tend to run out of pages before the end of the sailing season.

For many years I have produced my own using simply a couple of Word documents and a ring binder. You can tweak the details to suit your needs, and print off more pages whenever you start running short. At the end of the season, the year’s pages can be removed and filed away.

In the same ring binder I have a page for the boat’s details, a copy of the local tide tables and a couple of aides-memoires for distress calls and passage reports to the coastguard.

Simple, effective, cheap and cheerful!

Outline The Hull

Outline the hull by making a wide rectangular shape

Draw A Superstructure

Let’s start adding a stack of superstructures on the yacht! Form the shape as shown with a small part on the left sticking out.

Draw Another Superstructure

Draw a smaller superstructure on top similar to the previous step.

Draw The Topmost Superstructure

Draw the topmost superstructure by forming a smaller shape like in the previous steps as shown.

Outline The Windows

Outline the windows by drawing a line on each superstructure as shown.

Form The Shape Of The Windows

Form the shape of the windows by creating vertical lines.

Add The Portholes

Let’s add portholes across the hull by making ring shapes.

Draw The Body Of Water

Draw the body of water surrounding the yacht by making wavy horizontal lines.

Complete The Yacht Drawing

Let’s finish the yacht drawing by adding some color! First, color the windows on the superstructures with a dark purple crayon. Next, shade the portholes with orange and blue crayons. Now, fill in the rest of the yacht with a white crayon. Then, color the sky with a light blue crayon and the body of water with a dark blue crayon.

Do I need the eBook to build this cool rc sailboat?

No you don't. The book is designed for the newcomer to model yacht building. The book does make it a much simpler process with every detail figured out and covered in the book. Seasoned builders can simply have a go with the free plans.

Are the plans really free?

Yes all the plans are free to download and use as you see fit. The most comprehensive plans are the RS750 A1 full size.

Are there CAD files or 3D files?

Yes there is a 3D dxf file inside a zip file that you can download for free and use how you want. Some people use this in CAD programs or in 3D modelling programmes to great effect. Look under Racing Sparrow 750 plans on this page. An STL file for 3D printing is in the pipelines. Email me if you want a copy.

While we think 3D printing is great, we believe old-skool strip planking balsa is a wonderfully simple way to make a very lightweight boat with excellent longitudinal strength and beauty.

Thanks for an excellent design in your RG65. I trialled her again today in a solid 20 knots gusting higher. Hi Bryn, I recently finished building these 2 Racing Sparrow RS750s which i really enjoyed, it was a great project and kept me busy for a few months. The field of 68 is set, but now the work begins.

The NCAA Tournament will take place at venues across the United States over the next month with elimination games taking place from the First Four in Dayton to the Final Four in Glendale, Arizona.

But before the games begin, it’s time to fill out your bracket. An annual highlight in classrooms, clubs, offices and workplaces across the country, bracket pools are commonplace in March.

Tipoff times and TV schedules haven’t been determined yet. That’s coming later Sunday. But fans now know the seedings and matchups for the first round, meaning they can start to eye their favorite Cinderella team and picks to make the Final Four.
