The main number for the clubhouse is (781) 631-0005. Marblehead Harbor is one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the world. Located about 9 nautical miles north of Boston Harbor, it is an attractive destination as well as a stopping-off point for those going to or returning from Maine.  The main harbor is almost completely full of permanent moorings and no anchoring is permitted anywhere in the harbor. The harbor is regulated by the Marblehead Harbormaster, and, by designation, transient mooring accommodations can be obtained from the dockmasters of the three major yacht clubs: Corinthian Yacht Club, Eastern Yacht Club and Boston Yacht Club. If you wish to rent dock space on the Marblehead side of town contact the Marblehead Harbormaster.

CCYC in the 1950's

Club History

The Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club was founded in 1952 by Tiny Mitchell, a well-known east coast sailor who was commodore of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club at Burnham.  Tiny spent much of his time at Cowes as he found the sailing in the Solent more suitable for his 6 metre yacht.  Tiny identified the plot of land now occupied by the Club as being suitable for the local sailors to build their own club and also allow them to store and launch their boats.  He acquired the site for £500 and the locals took over and did the rest.  Tiny was elected as the first commodore and held that position until he died in 1964.

corinthian yacht club launch

Remarkably in 1953, only months after it was founded, the Club ran a Round the Island race for dinghies.  This caused huge controversy in the national, local and yachting press but fortunately the weather was almost perfect with light to moderate breeze allowing the 180 boat fleet to get round safely.  Remarkably the first two boats on elapsed time finished within one second of each other, Ian Proctor crewed by John Oakley and Cliff Norbury sailing the prototype Osprey just pipped Claude Nethercot in what went on to become the 505.  Uffa Fox trailed behind by 5 minutes in his 18 foot Jollyboat.

Since then the Club has gone on to run major championships including the Flying Fifteen Worlds, Sonar Worlds, two J24 Europeans and numerous national and regional championships for classes such as Etchells, Dragons, Flying Fifteens, Sonatas and Impalas.

Club facilities have evolved considerably since the 1950s when there was limited access from a concrete hard standing using a hand operated davit plus mud berths for members boats.  Today there are first class dry sailing facilities and a modern marina for members’ boats.  This has been achieved by the hard work of the members which is the ethos of the Club.

A history of the first 55 years of the CCYC by Diana Cave is available from the Office.

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

Moscow students to participate in first ever live streamed eclipse

Group will travel to weiser, idaho, today to prepare for launch.

  • By Taylor Nadauld, Daily News staff writer
  • Aug 19, 2017

Video of a total eclipse from near space has only been taken once before, in Australia in 2012.

It has never been done live. But Monday, 55 teams from across the United States, nearly all consisting of college students, will launch balloons into the sky to track the eclipse and live stream it for the world to see.

Near Space Engineering, a Moscow High School club that conducts high-altitude balloon launches, will be one of only a handful of high school teams participating in the nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Launch.

"It's pretty exciting," Katie Ward, 17, said Thursday.

Ward is one of six high school members of the club, which has been working on the eclipse launch in some capacity for approximately two years.

Ward, a soon-to-be high school senior, focused her senior project on the video portion of the launch, developing a system that allows the video to be turned on when the rest of the device is turned on, saving precious time for the team. Ward also focused on fixing the device's tracking system.

Two modems, one for transmitting video and one for transmitting images, will be lifted 100,000 feet into the air by a helium balloon that will burst shortly after the conclusion of the eclipse.

"One thing that I'm worried about is whether or not we're going to have an internet connection," Ward said.

The group is taking along a large blue spool of ethernet cable to hardwire a connection if they have to. There will also be an internet provider bringing in extra equipment to support the additional people expected to be in Weiser, Idaho, for the eclipse, where the launch will take place.

In addition, Ward said, the connection will be password protected for the students. The team has also been working with Weiser High School to utilize its internet connection - and their showers. The group will be camped out in Weiser today through Monday with a 40-foot trailer and 18 gallons of water.

Funded in part by the NASA Science Mission Directorate, the Eclipse Ballooning Launch is led by the Montana Space Grant Consortium at Montana State University.

Being the only participating team from Idaho, Near Space Engineering was awarded nearly $16,000 in grant funds from the Idaho Space Grant Consortium for materials and travel costs.

Victoria Wilk, 19, a sophomore at Vassar College in New York and graduate of Moscow High School, stuck some last minute labels to the device Thursday as she recounted other projects she has worked on.

Wilk said she had tried to conduct a similar project to the balloon launch in the past but could not find the necessary instruments or equipment within her price range.

"I actually talked about doing something that was exactly like this, almost exactly, and one of the professors was like, 'No. Won't work.' I was like 'fine, I'll do it through NASA,' " Wilk said, laughing.

The handful of team members and their instructor, Moscow High School physics teacher Pat Blount, were gathered in Room 46 of the high school Thursday afternoon for their final meeting before the launch, going over their launch plan and possible worst-case scenarios.

Flint questioned what would happen if the device were to land in a burnt field, a body of water or, worse, if someone watching live were to steal the device once it hit ground.

A handful of test launches hang from the ceiling in Room 46, representing past mistakes and triumphs.

The students and Blount are confident they have done enough launches that Monday's will go smoothly.

The eclipse will be live streamed at eclipse.stream.live.
