Olympia Yacht Club

The Olympia Yacht Club was organized in 1889 as the Olympia Motor Boat Club and was reactivated in 1908 with 27 boats. By 1910, ninety members renamed the group the Olympia Yacht Club. By 1915, the club had moorings at the city dock and began leasing the boat basin from the Port of Olympia. OYC opened it’s first clubhouse in 1930, remodeled in 1952 and the present facility was built in 1957. The OYC lighthouse tower at the foot of Simmons street at the caretakers house is a remnant of the 1930's structure.

At our March 12 South Sound Sailing Society meeting, we will hear from Jonathon Wolf who will share information about the Port of Olympia’s dredging and cleanup project to restore the waters in southern Budd Inlet. He will share the history of the port as it relates to legacy contamination, how we got to this point, the port’s Agreed Order with the Washington Department of Ecology, and how the port intends to fund such a massive project. There will also be time for questions and answers.

Jonathon is the Budd Inlet Project Manager for the Port of Olympia. For the previous 19 years he was the Deputy Director of Natural Resources for the Skokomish Indian Tribe.

The meeting will be in-person at the Olympia Yacht Club located at 201 Simmons St. NW.  Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. The meeting is open to both members and non-members, so invite your crew, dock mates, neighbors, and others who are interested in sailing.

We hope you and your friends will join us.

ABOUT US – Not your typical Yacht Club

The South Sound Sailing Society is a local group of folks who share a love for sailing. Founded in 1971, it has grown to over 200 families and individuals who enjoy meeting, racing and cruising together. The SSSS Club is a 501(c)7 non-profit organization. Members meet on the second Tuesday of every month, except July and August. The meeting begins at 7:00pm and the Doors open at 6:30pm.  (See How to Join for more information.) What do we do? Some of us race, some cruise, and some of us can’t get enough of either.

SSSS sponsors a year-round racing and cruising program. In addition to a full schedule of local keelboat races, we cosponsor the Toliva Shoal Race each February, where we invite boats from Tacoma and Seattle. We are home to the Budd Inlet Star Fleet, one of the largest in the country, and our dinghy fleet has handicap and one design Laser racing all summer. For those who prefer cruising, SSSS sponsors monthly cruises to local waters with potlucks, games, and a general good time. Most of all, SSSS members have a great time pursuing their common interest. The only prerequisite to membership is an interest in sailing. Owning a boat is not necessary, and our meetings are open to anyone who is interested.

The Annual Dues are now $70 per year. You can either pay at the General Meetings or use the online PayPay method.
