Compass Tenders

Catamaran 12.3m

The suv of the seas.

Built to accompany the 68m shadow vessel Nebula, this catamaran bears a striking family resemblance to the mothership.

tender catamaran plans

Working closely with the exterior stylists of the parent superyacht, Schwalgien Yacht Design, we incorporated design characteristics that are both aesthetic and functional.

tender catamaran plans

The tender’s futuristic styling and catamaran hull configuration gives a 4.4m beam that allows for an open-plan arrangement and seating for 18 guests. There’s a head, streamlined galley, and a forward hydraulic door for effortless beach landings.

Underway, the catamaran is incredibly smooth and has impressive acceleration through to her 40-knot top speed. Nimble and quick on her toes, the ’Shadow Kitten’ corners at speed with exceptional control.

These attributes make this 12.3m tender ideal for fast guest transportation, as well as use as a water sports platform, and a satellite vessel to the mothership for excursions and adventures.

Compass Tenders’ catamarans are available in lengths from 10.0m to 13.5m, and can be stowed aboard a parent superyacht or used in a chaseboat format.

3 of the coolest catamaran tenders you need to know about

A tender must be reliable, high performing and robust, which is why many owners are now deciding that a multihull is the best boat for the job.

Leading tender manufacturer, Compass Tenders , is seeing this new wave of demand first-hand with orders skyrocketing. Offering high volumes, superlative stability, safety and comfort, Compass Tenders has always had at least one catamaran tender in build since the company was founded in 2004.

“To date, Compass Tenders has delivered over 60 superyacht tenders of many varieties and sizes,” says Compass’ founder and CEO, Richard Faulkner. “Our experience in custom and semi-custom tender building is now unrivalled,” he adds.

Compass’ high-flying status is underpinned by projects such as the tenders for the 160.6-metre Lürssen superyacht Blue . However, the following brand-new catamaran projects by Compass – one of which is being revealed for the first time – are some of the coolest the industry has seen so far.

12.5m House Cat

Due to be delivered this summer, the brand-new 12.5-metre catamaran is a one-of-a-kind build for Compass Tenders. The client came directly to Compass via the company website and enquired about a standalone vessel to be moored by his property in the Bahamas. The boat will be used for excursions such as water sports, fishing trips and socialising from the property in the open sea and shallow Bahamian bays thanks to her draft of 0.9 metres.

Dubbed “The House Cat”, the vessel is a custom design for an owner who knew exactly what he wanted. To fulfil this rigid brief, the Compass team opted for a catamaran hull due to its versatility. The House Cat was also an opportunity for Compass to push the boundaries of the catamaran tender in an exciting new direction.

The House Cat will feature a propulsion package containing twin Mercury V12 600hp outboards to deliver a top speed in the region of 45 knots. The owner’s engine choice reflected the configuration used on his larger sportsfisher boats, which he prefers for their Jet Anchoring function and ability to be highly controlled. She will be the first tender created by Compass that is fitted with outboard engines and the first of her kind built in the UK.

Other standout features include solar panels on the bimini and a power station to charge a Seabob. The wide 4.4-metre beam and exceptionally spacious floor plan houses an aft seating area with a dual-height electrically powered table and will be able to offer seating for as many as 20 guests. Akin to a much larger yacht, the design also includes L-shaped galley facilities with a fridge and an optional BBQ. Elsewhere on board, a shower compartment, toilet, and hand basin can be found.

The forward section of the vessel has been dedicated to transporting scuba diving cylinders, SeaBobs, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, mountain bikes, and even a quad bike. The House Cat can carry a weight of 1,000kg, depending on the sea conditions.

Guests can board the catamaran via doors to port and starboard and disembark via the swim platform if they wish. Here, the bow door unfolds into a passerelle for easy access.

Exclusive: 11m New-build Catamaran

This just-revealed new build was chosen by the client from Compass’ semi-production line of 10.5 to 11.5-metre catamarans . As the first unit from the range, the new tender will be ready in the spring of 2025 for sea trials for a repeat client.

The owner was looking for a craft that could offer space and a flexible layout for all manner of excursions from the mothership. With a catamaran tender being the obvious choice to fulfil the owner’s brief and offer a high number of amenities, the exterior styling of the new cat was tailored to suit the mothership and the sizing was chosen to fit inside the superyacht’s garage.

The facilities on board the new vessel include a galley with a fridge and sink and accompanying seating and dining area that can be shaded by a bimini if needed. Guests will have access to a dayhead and a shower and can embark/disembark via the beach landing door – which has been made to also perfectly suit swimming activities. Another boarding door can be found on the port side and can easily accommodate a wheelchair user.

12.3m Shadow Kitten

Winner of the Tender of the Year at the Design and Innovation Awards 2023 , the 12.3-metre Shadow Kitten is the custom-made catamaran tender created for the 68-metre support vessel Nebula . Schwalgien Design was responsible for the exterior and interior of Nebula as well as the complementary design of Shadow Kitten.

Ordered in April 2020, Shadow Kitten was delivered after an 18-month build period and has since been enjoyed as a water sports platform and for excursions in the Caribbean and Croatia in a range of sea conditions. Enhanced by a Jet anchoring system, the easy operation of Shadow Kitten is a major benefit to her owner. Up to two crew can take control via the modern “floating” helm console and its retracting seat and push the Shadow Kitten to speeds of up to 40 knots.

Additional seating comes in the form of a large sofa with upholstered footstools for up to 15 guests. The owner is given a dedicated seating area and is protected by a frameless laminated glass windshield that wraps around the entire aft seating area. Fitted in a modular design, the seating area can be rearranged by the crew to be made suitable for carrying cargo or for taxiing more than 17 people.

Guests can board Shadow Kitten through the wide and flush boarding door built into the bulwarks of the loading area or via the large swim platform with the help of powered pop-up handrails. This platform also includes an electric sliding transom door, an aft anchor locker and a pop-up winch. Another access point is at the bow, where a door can transform into a beach landing platform and comes complete with a swim ladder and shower.

Compass Tenders have built many full-custom limousine, sports and utility tenders, designed and built to accompany some the most iconic superyachts in the world. However, these catamaran tenders have given the UK-based company opportunity to flex its creative muscles and prove the versatility of the multihull. Aspen Carbon Cat: Next-Generation Boat Tender

The unique hull shape of the extremely stable Carbon Cat dinghy combines the best attributes of both catamarans and monohulls.

The boatbuilding team at Aspen Power Catamarans has developed a new line of lightweight rigid tenders that are unlike any dinghy built before. Carbon Cat 's patent-in-process hull form provides the stability of a catamaran or an inflatable RIB but utilizes lightweight carbon fiber construction making them fast, efficient, and easy to handle, according to company founder Larry Graf.

"The idea was to have a lightweight boat that would run very soft in a chop, which is hard to do, and a catamaran shape that delivers stability," he says.

The rugged carbon fiber composite construction makes the tender beachable, even on stones.

The hybrid design starts with a deep single-entry forefoot that smoothly cleaves through waves for improved tracking and spray resistance. The hull contour then gently widens aft and at the stern resembles a modified catamaran hull which provides lateral stability and lift. The resulting stability allows riders to step on the gunwales while boarding, and the sharp entry forward ensures a fast, efficient, dry ride. Take a look for yourself.

Aspen Carbon Cat Tour

The Carbon Cat construction and design means that the power requirements should be 35% less than typical inflatables due to the hard bottom and hybrid cat hull shape, according to Graf, who notes during sea trials, the T11 model reached a top speed of 21 mph powered by a single 9.9-hp Yamaha outboard. Using more moderate horsepower increases fuel efficiency and reduces weight. This makes the Carbon Cat and its engine easier to stow on board and easier to launch and retrieve.

Optional transom wheels make beaching the Carbon Cat even simpler.

The Carbon Cat is not nearly as heavy as it looks.

The gunwale is finished with a thick foam bumper made from SeaDek HD for durability and to eliminate scratches and abrasions. The seating area is also cushioned with SeaDek creating a softer surface and better grip.

The three current models, T9, T10, and T11, are 9, 10, and 11 feet respectively and weigh between 126 and 151 pounds. Prices range from $9,900 to $10,800.

good-spindrift-pic-resized.jpg

A freestanding multi-piece mast constructed of aluminum tubing provides a lightweight and strong spar. The mast can be permanently assembled or left in pieces to allow the tubes to nest together for onboard storage. Fully zippered sleeve luff sail combined with a halyard for hoisting and an open reef section allows for single line reefing on the water in seconds  for sailing in rough conditions. There is no need to struggle while "planting the flag" as with other dinghies and you can easily drop the sail while on shore without dropping the mast.

A fully developed bow section combined with our “butterfly” construction technique allows a beginning builder to achieve a refined hull shape from modest flat panels.

All but the 12' version are offered as a “nesting” version which bolts together allows the bow section to stow in the stern section for on deck storage. Read more about the nesting version .

The construction of the Spindrift hull is fast and simple. The bottom and side panels are matched up and joined at the bow. Then the keel is wired together which allows the hull to “unfold” like a butterfly. The chine is wired and the bulkheads are installed. The hull takes shape all in one step with no complicated jig required. The video below is an excellent demonstration of a S10 dinghy being unfolded. This method of construction is identical to our larger designs such as the Core Sound 20 , 17 and 15 making it a great build for a first time builder. Read on to see more details about our plans and kits. Our Core Sound 15 build series uses the same techniques for construction.

Nested DIMENSIONS :    S-9     S-10     S-11   Note: S12 not available in a nested version

nested-size.jpg

Standard Construction In the standard layout, full-length cockpit seat tanks provide excellent buoyancy and minimal bailing after a capsize ( video ) as well as storage options for longer excursions with the addition of deck plate type screw hatches in the vertical cockpit sides. In both versions the dagger board trunk is located just off center. This is a design feature of all our dinghies which allows the keel to be continuous and strong, prevents damage and grit from entering the trunk slot and simplifies construction. Click here to view the non-nesting assembly guide , a new work in progress document that covers the general order of construction.

standard-layout.jpg

The biggest compromise is the lost permanent flotation in the nested version. More bailing will be require after a capsize and the free surface effect will make the nested version less stable after a capsize until the water is bailed out. A suction bailer can be installed in a standard hull to empty the boat while underway but the nested version has 2 separate bilges and 2 bailers would be expensive and complicated. Click here to see our " Nesting Spindrift Assembly Guide " where you can read about the steps of building a nesting Spindrift. This document accompanies the nesting plans.

Construction Plans  We print and ship detailed construction plans for each of our models. Plans include 11x17" pages of scale drawings, a materials list, epoxy guide and construction overview guide. spinrace.jpg

Many of our Spindrift families race their boats, then turn around and use them for cruising and voyaging as hard working tenders under oar and motor. They have won several regattas under both sail and oar which were open only to working tenders.

As a matter of fact, we have an open challenge to any other non-custom 10′ dinghy: A dinghy triathlon: sail, row, motor. The challenge is open to any commercially or home-built dinghy built from commercially available stock plans.

Spindrifts are a very good investment if you have a jr. sailor in your family. Unlike many dinghies used for trainers (such as the Optimist) you do not “outgrow” a Spindrift. While the boat is very suitable for children and inexperienced adults, in the hands of a good competitive sailor, the boat offers the challenge of top end racing.   If you need more carrying capacity in less length, take a look at our  Catspaw pram series .

Several months ago, Mark Gumprecht wrote me about a couple of interesting and lovely rowing catamarans he had built. He submitted the article below and I quickly accepted it. Then I asked him if he was interested in offering plans for these unique designs to our readers. He thought that might be a good idea and asked for a little time to work them up. Then a few weeks ago, the plans in the form of PDF files arrived in my mailbox. We discussed the details briefly and the rest is history. You can find plans for the 8 foot "L'il Nip" and the 12 foot "Glider" in our store. Be sure to visit Mark's website too at: ridgelinedesigns.com

The catamaran skiff has two dory hulls connected by a narrow bridge deck that serves as a continuous seat, fore and aft. It is built with 1/4-inch luan plywood from Home Depot, which, at $12 a sheet, is a great choice for a cheap experimental design. The two dory hulls are simple to build, and each of them was put together in a day.

I began by setting up two temporary frames and the transom on my workbench. After shaping the two side panels to line up on the frames, I placed the bottom panel on top and scribed the piece. I placed thickened epoxy between the bow seams and tack-glued the bottom, using masking tape to hold it in place. Next, I filleted and taped the inside corners and glassed the hull bottoms. Bulkheads and beams at each end held the hulls together and created watertight compartments in bow and stern. I used quarter-inch plywood to connect the hulls and create the bridge deck seat. Finally, I sealed everything with a couple of coats of epoxy, then sanded and varnished the outside of the hulls.

The maiden voyage

After launching the boat, and before taking her out for a spin, my first task was to find the balance point, and locate and install the oarlocks. I was finally ready for the moment of truth. I’m happy to report that the skiff rows perfectly and the catamaran hulls are incredibly stable. At less than 8 feet long, she carries my wife, our dog, our supplies, and me from ship to shore--and back again—quite easily. I’ve, always hated rowing dinghies with the stern dragging in the water, and the continuous seat and two rowing positions allow this boat to be in perfect trim at all times. The simple varnished wooden hulls draw lots of attention at the dock. I don’t think people are accustomed to seeing wooden boats these days, and definitely not with catamaran hulls. We have used the boat for a couple of seasons now, and love it. It’s a pleasure to row and does much better in wind and chop than the original skiff I built.

One thing leads to another…

I confess that designing and building small boats has become something of an addiction. A couple of years and a trailerable trimaran later (another story), I thought it would be great fun to build a 12-foot version of my cat skiff just for rowing. It would have a sliding seat and some nice long oars, basically a stretched version of the 8-footer cat with lighter weight construction. I sketched the design, tackled the project, and am thrilled with the result.

The 12-foot rowing cat is built of 1/8-inch luan plywood with stringers and frames, and 1/4-inch luan plywood for the bottom and the seat. All the plywood came from the local building supply. In my opinion, a project like this doesn’t require marine plywood if you don’t have the extra money to spend. Most household quality plywood has exterior glue and should last a long time if epoxy coated and varnished. (I store all of my boats inside when not being used.)

Just for fun, I veneered the outside of this boat with ribbon grain mahogany, since even expensive marine plywood still looks like plywood, with nice color but wild swirling grain patterns. I was able to get large sheets of veneer, 22 inches wide and more than 11 feet long. It’s beautiful stuff and not too expensive, and about $1 a square foot. I vacuum bagged the veneer onto the 1/8-inch luan plywood with epoxy resin. Aerospace Composites sells nylon bagging tubes with special clips for making bags of any length, in this case, 13 feet long.

I cut out the frames and set them up on a long bench and added the 1/4-inch plywood stem and stringers. One side panel was clamped and marked. Once the first panel fitted correctly I trimmed the other three panels to match. I then glued the side panels onto the framework, one at a time, and scribed the bottom panel, gluing it on using masking tape to help secure the pieces. The hulls are joined with small beams fore and aft, and 1/4-inch plywood for the seat area. Shallow keels protect the bottom and give directional stability.

Having no experience with sliding seats, I found designing the mechanism a challenge. My final design uses four skateboard wheels on the seat, with a simple track on the bridge deck. I gave the outside of the boat two coats of epoxy, then sanded and varnished it.  The veneered hull looks fantastic!

The outriggers are laminated out of 1/8-inch mahogany veneer, with the oarlocks approximately 10 inches outside the rails. The 9’4” oars are made with mahogany and framing lumber from Home Depot, which I find to be a great source of materials in my area. If I’m patient, I can usually find some nice, mostly clear lumber, cheap!

Rowing the boat for the first time was a thrill. I had never used a sliding seat and had no idea if my contraption would work, but after just a few strokes I got used to the motion. The combination of long oars and leg power add up to a turbo-charged rowing experience! Once I got the rhythm down I had a blast. My wife quickly got the hang of it and wants a rowing cat to call her own. The cat skiff rows great, and is a fun way to get some exercise, and enjoy our beautiful local waters.

Volta trucks, volta trucks bounces back from bankruptcy, resumes ‘sharpened’ commercial ev business plan.

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Less than six months after a seemingly dooming bankruptcy filing, Volta Trucks has reemerged from the ashes, fresh with redemptive capital and a leaned-down business plan. The commercial EV startup can now resume its work in delivering its electric last-mile trucks to customers this year.

Volta Trucks is a UK-based  commercial EV  startup that spent nearly four years working toward initial deliveries of its flagship commercial truck, the  Volta Zero . We reported on much of that journey, from a mere  vehicle design sketch in 2019  to a prototype launch less than a year later.

We saw  several rounds of funding  bolstered by a number of pre-orders for its expanding lineup of the Zero Trucks, as well as plans to  expand into the US . By 2023, Volta appeared poised to hit the European market following more purchase commitments and necessary certification in place to  begin official sales .

Volta  began series production  in Austria ahead of those planned deliveries in Q3 2023, but things started to go south once its battery supplier Proterra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last summer.

By October 2023, Volta Trucks announced that it, too, was filing for bankruptcy, citing tight capital markets. A month later, however, we reported that Luxor Capital Group – a shareholder in Volta Trucks and one of its largest lenders – was  finalizing a deal to purchase the startup  from bankruptcy and keep the operation going.

Today, as we enter Q2 of 2024, Volta Trucks has confirmed the acquisition by Luxor Capital, giving the commercial EV startup the financial runway to continue its work, albeit under a more focused, leaned-down business strategy.

Volta Trucks hones in on EV deliveries in Europe

Volta reemerged today with details of its 2.0 business , led by new owner Luxor Capital with a honed-in focus on providing its Zero commercial trucks to fleet customers in Europe. The revived company is now called Volta Commercial Vehicles Ltd and remains registered in the UK with a team of around 150 employees, down from over 750 working globally in its previous iteration.

The funding from Luxor has enabled the startup to resume development of its 16t and 18t Volta Zero trucks ahead of plans for series production in Austria later this year with contract manufacturer Steyr Automotive. Volta CEO Essa Al-Saleh spoke about the company’s second life and restructured business plan:

We’re looking to confirm orders with existing customers, reassemble the supply chain, complete a crucial fundraising round, and ensure series vehicles are ready for delivery. Right now, we are in the midst of discussions with all our suppliers and partners to enable these objectives. We have learned a lot from our challenging journey and are emerging stronger and more focused than ever. During the last couple of months, we have analyzed our original business plan and worked hard to simplify our business model with a strong focus on speed to market, capital efficiency and profitability. The new Volta Trucks will provide an innovative “chassis-cab” product, supported by a tailored Maintenance and Service offering andcpartnerships with certified Body Builders. We believe this will best support ourccustomers’ immediate needs and facilitate the electrification transition

Volta shared that customer trials in live Zero trucks operations are once again underway in the UK ahead of compliance toward GSR-2 (General Safety Regulation) standards that will go into effect in July. Beyond the UK, Volta Trucks says its customer trials will expand in Q2 to customers in Germany, France, Nordics, and Austria.

Luxor Capital’s funding of the revived startup includes an initial round of convertible financing over the next month, followed by a Series-A round for investors scheduled for the middle of 2024. Volta expects the Series-A round to deliver enough capital to begin Zero Truck series production and deliver its first EVs to customers.

With a pending presence in France in the works, the commercial EV startup also shared intentions to establish customer partnerships that will enable distinctive Zero trucks to navigate roads during this summer’s 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

tender catamaran plans

Here is an easy to built small dinghy. 2 m (almost 8 feed) long with a weight of 18 kg ( 60lbs light). The boat served us well on our 11 year journey on our PELICAN catamaran. I could row it till wind force 7 when we where at anchor. And we where more for anchor as in a port. So for shopping, going out, fun we had to use the tender. I never sailed the boat, or used an outboard it was always rowing. The plan shows a rig. If you build it as a tender it is not necessary to build the the daggerboard or daggerboard case.
