STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

FEM - Finite Elemente Methode

With the FE method, the component to be calculated is modeled from many small connected (finite) elements. The reactions of the individual elements under the action of a load and their mutual influence give the engineer information about the actual deformation and stress behavior of the entire system. FEM is used in the calculation of complex component geometries and/or laminate structures in order to optimize them according to weight, strength, or rigidity. In the construction of large sailing yachts in particular, questions arise that cannot be solved with sufficient accuracy without the use of FEM.

Dramatic Contest 67CS video: showing the new Judel-Vrolijk design with soul

Test Editor Toby Hodges gets to know a yacht with true character aboard the brand new 67ft Contest.

Dutch yard Contest commissioned Judel/Vrolijk for the first time to design its new 67CS. This is a size on the increase for owners who like to get places quickly and engage in the odd race, and may need crew to help manage the boat. We tested hull number one rigged with carbon spars and 3Di sails off Palma Mallorca on a sunny and wonderfully breezy day and produced this Contest 67CS video.

The move to designers Judel/Vrolijk is a bold statement by Contest Yachts. Just as a GTi badge on a car suggests increased performance, it’s fair to assume a yacht drawn by this firm will be no slouch. See for yourself…

Contest wanted to find a naval architect to establish the sort of long-term relationship it enjoyed with Georg Nissen, one that could produce continuity. Over the past ten years, Contest has pushed for more performance while trying to maintain its trademark quality and comfort. “Comfort and quality remain king,” Arjen Conijn says, “but wherever we can win performance without losing our core focus we will do it.”

As you can see in the Contest 67CS video, her hull lines have been optimised for moderate displacement and performance. She has reasonably flat sections aft and a hint of a chine to the topsides for offwind stability, plus a sharp forefoot for upwind work. The 67CS also has a generous rig that offers many sail combinations.

Her low-profile coachroof is in keeping with the rest of Contest’s 42-72ft range. Wetzel Brown Partners have again handled styling in the interior– four layouts are offered, including the choice of forward or aft owner’s cabin.

Arjen Conijn, managing director of Contest, sees his company’s new 67-footer as a hybrid solution. “It is possible to sail just with the family or with a crew,” he declares. The difference is that her size provides the opportunity “to bring a crew aboard one day”.

Conijn feels the development of equipment such as thrusters and electric winches has made this size practical without crew. “Five years ago our 62 launched and proved it was manageable and now it will be with this [67],” he says. “Our 72 is the starting point for permanent crew.”

Baltic 146 // Judel/Vrolijk

Finnish luxury yacht builder baltic yachts builds 45m yacht baltic 146 with exterior and interior design by judel/vrolijk & co from germany..

The Baltic 146 has been developed as a bluewater cruiser but with twin rudders and a carbon-fiber hull to offer performance. A lifting keel reduces the draft from 5.90m to 3.40m. Captive winches keep a clean deck support a small crew to sail the 45m yacht. A bimini is over the cockpit and the double helm station as well. The 550 hp Scania engine is connected to a pod drive that rotates 360-degree and also serves as a stern thruster. Furthermore, the engine features SCR ( Selective Catalytic Conversion ).

The owners’ and three guest’s cabins are in the forward area of the vessel, while the crew of seven people is in the aft area.

Delivery is scheduled for the summer of 2021.

Matthias Bröker, veteran designer at Judel/Vrolijk, designed the 9.14 metre long boat for himself. The ergonomics in the cockpit are consistently designed for single-handed and double-handed racing. Some of the dimensions are even based on the leg lengths of the future owner, who will be sailing his new weapon on the water. popular single-handed and double-handed regattas in Germany and Denmark would like to start. All controls such as the tiller, sheets, halyards and outhaul are concentrated in the front cockpit section between the companionway and traveller. The ORC-orientated boat requires no water ballast.

Balsa, flax and wood mouldings

The boat and all its parts apart from the rudder stock and keel fin, which are made of carbon fibre, are built by Friedrich Deimann's shipyard Greenboats in Bremen from battens made entirely in-house using natural flax fibre, bio-epoxy and a core of balsa heartwood. It is said to weigh just 3.05 tonnes when ready to sail. With the self-tacking jib and a total sail area of 55 square metres, this results in a high sail load factor of 5.5, which indicates a strong performance, as does the relatively high ballast ratio of 40 percent on the 2.05 metre deep keel.

Boatbuilding discovers flax fibres

Greenboats is a pioneer in the use of sustainable materials such as flax fibre and has developed its own raw products, which it also offers to other boat builders. The product range called Greenboats Fabrics includes unidirectional and biaxial fabrics as well as woven fabrics and prefabricated sandwich panels. Flax is already widely used in boatbuilding, from Greenboats' daysailer Flax 27 (see YACHT 22/19) to various individual constructions and the new Outremer 5X performance cat. The material, which is grown in Belgium and France, is tear-resistant and resistant to pressure and buckling; it is considered to be on a par with glass fibre. Production is CO2-neutral and the material is easy to dispose of. Flax also has a noise-insulating and vibration-reducing effect, has an attractive structure and can be coloured for transparent solutions. The scrims are available as a dry product or pre-soaked in various fibre orientations or as hybrids mixed with carbon fibres. The disadvantage of flax fibre is the higher price and the more complicated processing.
