Explore the Dodecanese Islands from Kos!

Kos is the island of Hippocrates , considered to be the founder of modern medicine. A crossroad of civilizations, from neolithic times to the end of 20th century colonialism, Kos bears proudly impressive remnants of wonderful ancient monuments as well as many Italian neo-colonial buildings, which in fact still dominate central spots of the city with their distinctive and beautiful architectural style.

Our yacht charter base on the island of Kos is perfect for exploring the Dodecanese Islands, including the popular Kalymnos, Leros and Patmos to the north or Symi, Tilos and Rhodes to the south. We are happy to suggest itineraries, but you are free to choose which islands you visit and which route you take.

Kos is easily accessible with direct charter flights from most European countries . Our fleet in Kos is located at the main Kos Marina with plenty of shopping and dining selections and the option to spend a few days exploring the historic town of Kos before or after your charter.

Our Charter Fleet in Kos

Our boats in Kos are available for both skippered and bareboat rentals and include a wide variety of our most popular sailing yachts and catamarans. Special charter arrangements are also available including private day trips and rentals for special events including company excursions, weddings and honeymoon trips.

Kos island has evidence of human civilisation dating back 5,000 years. Ancient Greek philosopher and father of modern medicine Hippocrates spent time there, and you can visit Asklepieion that followed the great man's priciples of treatment in ancient times.

As well as Ancient Greek relics you can see buidings, castles and churches left by the Venetians, Ottomans, and Knights of St John as well. The Ottomans have some of the greatest modern influence on the Greek island thanks to it lying just an hour by ferry off the Turkish coast.

Kos is today a major holiday resort, only slightly lying behind nearby Rhodes in terms of annual visitor numbers. The more you look the more you will understand why - there's many a beautiful sandy beach (both organised and unorganised), nightlife to suit many a taste, and a natural beauty that will satisfy everyone.

Kos is regarded as a cycling island for getting around. There is a 13km cycle track for those who wish to stretch their legs, and for those into mountain biking the mountainous inland will definitely appeal. Getting about by bike is a greener way of exploring the island and thanks to cycling's popularity.

Though you will inevitably enter Kos Town (you are on a sailing holiday) you should also visit nearby Kardamena. Kardamena Bay has a small harbour but is where a theatre from ancient times has recently been excavated, there are several important churches but at the same time there is very good entertainment and modern infrastructure.

On a Kos yacht charter you can take in whatever floats your boat from modern relaxation to ancient wonders!

Explore Kos By Renting A Yacht

The Dodecanese Islands are traditionally seven islands but a Kos yacht charter can involve landing on a few more than that even without leaving the archipelago. Leaving the island's main marina in Kos Town you will be able to head NW or SE to follow the line of islands according to what you want.

Heading NW on your charter yacht the first island you will run into is the mountainous island of Kalymnos, a major international climbing centre. Mooring in Agia Marina, Leros - the next island is famed for its stunning villages and beautiful beaches as is the next island Lipsi. Patmos is a religious centre and is said to be where St John the Apostle was inspired to write the Book of Revelations from his visit to the Cave of the Apocalypse.

Almost as north west as you can get in the Dodecanese, Ikaria is one of five 'Blue Zone' islands in the world where people live the longest and healthiest lives on the planet. Thanks to its governance it is also one where tourism isn't too much of an industry, allowing its natural wonders to flourish and indeed those who are lucky enough to call it home.

Heading south west you can go to Rhodes with its ancient ruins and wonderful beaches. Other islands in the chain in that direction are Nisyros with its volcanic landscape, Tilos with its astounding scenery and Byzantine churches, and Halki that has only recently been re-inhabited.

A Dodecanese island sailing holiday, be it a bareboat yacht charter, gulet or skippered yacht charter, will often be in the teeth of the strong and steady Meltemi but this has in fact made the region one of the favoured destinations for yachtcharter enthusiasts. You will be confident of the wind through most of the summer and the sights, sounds, tastes and smells will make it a sailing vacation to remember.

How To Get To Kos

Three major airports can be used to access Kos - Kos Airport, Bodrum in Turkey and Rhodes Airport.

Kos Airport

This is served by many European airlines throughout the summer and a bus service runs to Kos Town.

Bodrum Airport, Turkey

Though Kos is technically in Greece, the Turkish coast is far closer than the Greek mainland. You can fly into Bodrum Airport in Turkey, taking a ferry and a bus/taxi on to Kos Town. Bodrum is closer than Rhodes.

Rhodes Airport

This has a large number of daily flights from much of Europe, and you can take a ferry to Kos to join your Dodecaneseyacht charter from there.

Marinas In Kos

There are several smaller marinas on Kos Island but only one with a substantial number of berths. Yacht charter companies offer gulet , catamaran , monohull sailing boat and motor yacht hire out of Marina Kos that are available as a bareboat charter, skippered yacht charter or crewed yacht charter.

Marina Kos:

Capable of taking a luxury yacht of 60 metres, this is a very well equipped marina with its own beach.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 60m (196 Feet)

Max Draught 5m (16.4 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, Wifi, showers, toilets, laundry, wastewater collection, recycling and refuse collection, market, supermarket, bar, restaurant, car rental, beach, ATM, yacht repair.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Kos

The Meltemi blows from the north-east. This is why heading up to the north-west Dodecanese islands on a sailing yacht is going to appeal more on an 'uphill-downhill' route. You can also head south-east on a 'downhill-uphill' route but that will often involve beating in the latter half of the week when you are a little more tired.

7 days - Kos to Ikaria and back: This route involves island hopping north-west and then back south-west to Kos Town. Heading upwind then down you will spend days in Kalymnos, Leros, Limnos and Patmos, with no more than 35-40NM of sailing per day at a stretch.

14 days - Dodecanese circuit: This is an opportunity to sail north as far as Ikaria and south as far as Rhodes. You will see the very best of the island chain including the churches, mountains and exquisite beaches of the smaller islands yet have time to take in the tourist resorts of Kos and Rhodes as you go. You will get some good reaching in as you head out to Astipalea and Nisyros on two legs heading east but beating and running on different legs too.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Kos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Meltemi winds can make for exciting sailing in July and August when you honestly just want to hide from the heat.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Cos yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However, there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Kos

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat, temperatures are in the 30s.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

There are four marinas on Kos Island. However the yacht charter centre is Marina Kos in Kos Town, but it is worth a sail to the smaller ones - the 25 berth Kardemena Marina is in the centre of a town that's quite different to Kos Town.

Why go in the busiest months of July and August? The Meltemi is at its strongest then too. Going in September when the kids are at school you will find the seas still warm, the air not so hot and the winds gentler. Did we mention the crowds are thinner too?!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Yachting in Kos - Sailing Holiday Kos

The strong meltemi north winds and plenty of excursion places for the most fun on board.

Best sailing conditions for beginners and advanced sailors

Modern Port, many Anchoring Spots, long Sandy Beaches – Welcome to Kos!  The island of Kos has been an insider tip for water sport enthusiasts from around the world, because for them, a normal beach vacation is boring. The island is in the eastern Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish coast, and is one of the islands of the Dodecanese . With an area of just 290 square kilometers, Kos is also one of the smallest Greek islands. The island’s small size does not mean it is less interesting or fun. Every year, over 60,000 tourists come to Kos for their vacation, tripling the islands permanent population of 30,000. Kos is also relatively narrow. From east to west, the island is only about ten kilometers wide. From north to south, while also small, it is 50 kilometers. The small inner part of the country is, however, of little issue – almost the entirety of the island’s life occurs on its coasts along the sea. In the summer especially, all attention is given to Kos’ unbelievable beaches. Beaches of both fine sand and smooth pebbles allow you to choose what sort of shore experience you want, and provide enough space for any kind of water sport. The offers at and around the sea leave no wishes unrealized – from jet skiing to scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, and surfing , almost every water activity is possible on Kos. The wind especially has made Kos like a surfing El Dorado over the last ten years. The favorable winds make for perfect wave conditions, which surfers from around the world come to Kos to appreciate. The average 21ºC (70ºF) temperature on the Greek island doesn’t hurt either. The pleasant climate makes the island, along with its neighbors, one of the most popular vacation destinations among boating enthusiasts who on a hot summer’s day want a cool breeze to blow through their hair. The airport in Kos is conveniently located in the center of the island, and it takes just about 30 minutes to get to the main city.  Kos Marina  was finished construction in 2006 and it is located in  the heart of Kos City . It is the first large marina that lets all types of yachts anchor there throughout the year.  The old town is just a few minutes’ walk from the main part of town, and offers you a pleasant stroll along the redesigned waterfront. Here, you can also buy fresh grapes, almonds, figs and olives, all grown on the island.

“Kos Marina, please go to your docking position!”

The ideal entrance point on the east coast of Kos is of course the modern marina, one of the best equipped of its kind in Greece . More than 200 sailboats and catamarans dock here and wait for the next yacht charter on azure blue waters. Docking in Kos Marina is, however, only allowed with permission from the Mariner. By coming in from the sea via the VHF Canal 77 and giving the signal call “Kos Marina” upon arrival asks permission for entry. If your request is allowed, a pilot boat will come help you and find a place to tie up your boat. Even after this service, the best sides of the marina are yet to come, including a free Internet hotspot, clean bathrooms with showers, a cafeteria, a small super market, a convenience store, a Laundromat, and a bustling bar, where even late at night you can go to have an Ouzo nightcap with some locals. If sleep does not come to you in a long stretch after arrival, the view from the boat over the open sea – with a suggestion of the Turkish city Bodrum already on the horizon – will compensate for it. Many wonderful cruises can be undertaken from Kos, including longer ones with many anchoring points along the way. Turkey is just seven nautical miles away , and other route suggestions , such as excursions through the many Greek islands, can be relatively quickly achieved. To the north, the selection is large: Kalymos , Leros , Patmos or Samos lure travelers with their captivating landscapes. In the south, Tilos , Chalki , Symi and Rhodes offer popular walking excursions for a daytrip strolling through the idyllic old towns. Kos’ neighboring islands Níssiros , with its volcano and quaint villages, and Kahle Kálimnos , the island of sponge fishing, are lovely places to explore for a quick excursion. With the appropriate sailing yacht or a fast catamaran, Pátmos is also a reachable destination, and worth it to visit the 900 year old Aghios Ioannis Theologos Monastery (Monastery of Saint John the Theologian).  We have here a tour and route suggestion for the Dodecanese – sail around the Greec Islands

Sun soaked and cool breezes – everything is attracted to the beaches and sea

The entire year on Kos features a warm Mediterranean climate . The summer in the region is pretty long, so the sailing season starts already in March, when it’s already a comfortable 10-15ºC (50-59ºF) on the pleasant water. As a bit of advice to beginner sailors, this is also the perfect time to test and hone your skills. It’s not quite as hot out as in the peak summer months, and the wind is not yet as strong, so it makes learning and improving your sailing a much easier task. In this pre-summer sailing time, the Meltemi winds come from the southeast and create very good conditions for a yacht charter through the Greek islands . Between July and September, the temperatures climb often over 30ºC (86ºF), and though there is also a constant, cooling breeze, it can be difficult to manage some situations and maneuvers at sea. The pleasant Meltemi winds blow in these months between 4 and 5 on the Beaufort scale (Bft), but it is not uncommon for them to blast up to an 8 Bft – optimal conditions for experienced sailors, since they come here on their own expense. As a beginner it is not necessary to avoid Kos in the peak summer with these winds, but it is good to be aware of the higher waves and stronger winds, and to not underestimate their force. Because of these risks, it is recommended to plan a yacht charter to include an experienced crew or skipper in your booking. Hiring a skipper and crew is possible without any further effort via YACHTICO.com , and spares you the doubt, frustration and annoyance that may occur out at sea. Another important aspect for smooth sailing in this region is to clear yourself for entry at the official Port of Entry, so you can sail around both Greece and Turkey, since the islands intermingle and the border is close. In order to accomplish this, both the flag for guests and the international “Q” signal flag must be up at the Port of Entry, and you must have the valid papers for the boat and the crew must have their identification papers, as well as the skipper’s ID and driver’s license. You can find more information about these issues with the port police or directly where you pick up your yacht. Be sure to inquire further if you have any doubts, so you can start your cruise without any lingering questions.

Historic buildings by day, beach parties by night

Kos is a clean and tourist-friendly island. In and around the main city are large, luxurious hotels where the staff are always concerned with the well being of their guests. The best way to get the full experience of Kos during the summer months is to explore the 30 kilometer long designated cycling trails. To get even further into Kos’ hinterland, you can also rent a quad bike or a car and really explore the depths of the island. With these vehicles, you can also visit resident lemonade factory or the winery. There are also many ancient sites and historic excavations from the Hellenic and Roman periods, which offer artistic and historic interest to the area. Located on the serene harbor sits the massive castle in which Antimáchia Kardámena is enthroned. The Archeological Museum, Castle of St. John from the 13th century, and the Tree of Hippocrates – of which the locals are particularly proud – are also locations that are easy to get to. There are also many ancient houses, temples, baths, and mosaics, from various eras, to visit. After an extensive historic day program, those who are thirsting for a part atmosphere will not be disappointed by Kos’ nightlife. With a large number of bars, clubs, and beach parties, the island boasts a popular nightlife for dance maniacs and night owls. You should not, however, dismiss local specialties: Kos’ “red cheese” is a cheese that is baked in red wine and is offered in almost every tavern and restaurant on the island. There are also other delicious specialties of various types, such as “Pittarida” – noodles in meat stock – or “Varvara” – cooked wheat with sesame cream, sugar, almonds, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon. The next day, the clean and beautiful beaches invite you to just relax. Mylos , for example, a beach with fine white sand, has the blue flag of the EU and often offers live music directly on the water.

Yacht Rental Kos

The island of Kos, nestled amidst the azure embrace of the Aegean Sea, offers a world of natural splendor and human history, both rich in detail and mesmerizing in scope. One finds oneself standing at the intersection of myth and reality, where the whispers of ancient civilizations linger in the wind and the rhythmic dance of the waves beckons the modern wanderer. It is here that the yacht becomes not merely a vessel of travel but an instrument of exploration and discovery.

Why Rent a Yacht in Kos?

Yacht Rental Kos

The waters surrounding Kos are a living tapestry, woven with threads of turquoise, sapphire, and emerald. A yacht gliding upon these waves becomes a part of this symphony, a note that resonates with the natural beauty of the world. Dolphins may choose to escort you along your journey, their graceful movements a ballet that one could never tire of watching.

As your vessel carves through the water, the geography of Kos unfolds like a well-penned novel, filled with the eloquence of Mother Nature. Hidden coves, untouched beaches, and rugged cliffs each tell a tale. Some narrate the story of geological artistry, while others sing the songs of ancient mariners and civilizations that once thrived in these lands.

Embark on an Aegean Odyssey: Yachting Destinations in Kos

As your yacht's bow cuts through the shimmering surface of the Aegean Sea, the island of Kos lays before you like a jewel in Neptune's crown. While the entire island is teeming with treasures, a select few locales stand as beacons, promising the adventurous mariner a bounty of experiences unparalleled in their richness and diversity.

🚢 Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach, or Paradisi, as the locals call it, is a seductive spectacle of nature. Its golden sands, kissed by the sun and lapped by crystal clear waters, paint a picture that belies its simple name. Here, your yacht can anchor a safe distance from the shore, and you can indulge in a refreshing swim in the warm embrace of the Aegean.

🚢 Kefalos Bay

On the southwestern tip of Kos, Kefalos Bay is a feast for the senses. Its tranquil waters, protected by a natural barrier, offer safe anchorage for yachts. You may choose to explore the charming fishing village of Kefalos, rich in tradition and home to delightful tavernas, or journey to the nearby island of Kastri, with its tiny chapel crowning the summit.

🚢 Psalidi Wetland

A mere stone's throw from the bustling Kos Town, Psalidi Wetland is a testament to the diverse ecologies that the Aegean hosts. Anchoring offshore allows you to marvel at the myriad of bird species that call this place home. The symphony of avian calls that fills the air is an enchanting soundtrack that accompanies the setting of the sun.

🚢 Nisyros Island

Nisyros, a close neighbor of Kos, beckons the yachting enthusiast with the allure of its active volcanic heart. A journey by yacht to Nisyros takes one to the very edge of the volcanic crater, where the forces that shaped these islands continue to simmer beneath the surface.

🚢 Pserimos Island

This tiny island, nestled between Kos and Kalymnos, is the epitome of tranquility. With fewer than 100 inhabitants, Pserimos is a testament to the unhurried rhythm of island life. Its pristine beaches, like Vathy and Avlakia, are perfect for those seeking a peaceful anchorage and a refreshing dip in the azure waters.

🚢 Therma Beach

The curative powers of nature are on full display at Therma Beach. Here, warm, sulphurous waters bubble up from the depths of the earth, creating a natural spa. Yachts can anchor in the bay, allowing passengers to enjoy the therapeutic properties of these unique waters.

🚢 Tigaki Salt Lake

Just north of Kos Town, you'll find Tigaki Salt Lake, a haven of natural beauty that is especially enchanting in winter when it becomes a refuge for migrating flamingos. A yacht anchored offshore provides a superb vantage point for observing these flamboyant guests in their striking pink plumage, lending an exotic charm to the tranquil Aegean landscape.

🚢 Kalymnos Island

Renowned as the 'Island of the Sponge Divers,' Kalymnos, to the north of Kos, offers a fascinating insight into an age-old industry that once thrived across the Aegean. Dodecanesian culture is richly woven into the tapestry of this island, inviting the curious visitor to explore its vibrant history and rugged beauty. Anchor in the port of Pothia and let the allure of the island captivate you.

🚢 Plaka Forest

A verdant oasis nestled within the sun-drenched landscape, Plaka Forest provides a delightful contrast to the coastal vistas typically associated with Kos. This is a sanctuary where peacocks strut in all their iridescent glory, and turtles leisurely amble through the undergrowth. Nearby, you can anchor your yacht in the crystal-clear waters, immersing yourself in the tranquility of this serene environment.

🚢 Telendos Island

Just across from the north-west coast of Kalymnos lies the isolated island of Telendos. Once part of Kalymnos, it was separated by a devastating earthquake in 535 AD. Today, it’s a place of quietude and solace, free from the noise of cars and crowds. Its rocky landscape, crystal-clear waters, and the charming simplicity of its single settlement make it an idyllic anchorage for those seeking serenity.

🚢 Aspri Petra Cave

Tucked away on the southern tip of Kos, near Kefalos, lies the Aspri Petra Cave, also known as the 'White Stone Cave.' An archaeological site of significance, it houses remnants of Neolithic habitation. For the yachtsman, it's a fascinating detour, providing a glimpse into the region's prehistoric past. The nearby Kamari Bay offers safe anchorage, from where you can arrange a local guide to take you to the cave.

Kos and its surrounding waters are a testament to the incredible diversity and natural splendor of the Aegean. Each location, with its own charm and unique allure, is a chapter in an unforgettable journey that unfolds with every nautical mile sailed.

What Should I Consider Before Renting a Yacht in Kos?

Yacht Rental Kos

In the quest for adventure, one must heed the wisdom of preparation. The call of the Aegean may be enticing, but one should not embark upon these waters lightly.

⛵ The Season's Sway

Nature, in her grand design, paints Kos with the hues of the seasons. A seasoned mariner or amateur sailor must align with this rhythm to fully immerse in the experience.

The summer months may offer the warmth of the sun, but they also summon the masses. Autumn's arrival, on the other hand, brings a cooler embrace and a quieter reflection of the sea's majesty.

⛵ The Art of Navigation

To pilot a yacht in the waters of Kos requires a subtle dance with the elements. Understanding the local currents, wind patterns, and hidden underwater topography is not merely a skill but an art form.

The assistance of a local guide, skilled in the symphony of these waters, can transform the voyage from mere travel into an explorative odyssey, rich in nuance and hidden wonder.

⛵ Respect for the Environment

As one glides upon the Aegean's waves, it is essential to remember that we are but temporary guests in this watery realm. Respect for the marine ecosystem, adherence to local regulations, and a conscientious approach to waste disposal are not only ethical considerations but a homage to the delicate balance of life that thrives here.

Which Is the Best Yacht for Kos Waters?

The question of the ideal vessel is one that resonates deeply with both the soul of the traveler and the character of Kos itself.

⛵ The Balance of Luxury and Function

In selecting a yacht, one must find harmony between comfort and capability. Spacious decks that offer a panoramic view of the horizons may find their counterpoint in a well-equipped galley, where the fruits of the sea can be transformed into a culinary celebration.

⛵ The Craftsmanship of Design

The yacht's design must resonate with the environment it traverses. Sleek lines that mirror the graceful arcs of a dolphin's leap, robust hulls that whisper of the strength of the sea, and sails that dance with the wind's embrace all speak to a vessel worthy of Kos's waters.

⛵ A Partner in Exploration

Several yachts have been designed with the specific geography of Kos in mind. The choice of catamarans for stability, motor yachts for speed, or classic sailing yachts for the authentic experience is a personal decision that must align with one's aspirations.

The right yacht becomes more than a means to an end; it becomes a partner in exploration, a fellow traveler in a journey that will linger in the memory long after the sails have been lowered, and the anchor has found its resting place in the deep embrace of the Aegean.

The Unfolding Scroll of Queries: An Invitation to Inquiry

As we traverse the sparkling blue tapestry of the Aegean, with Kos as our pivotal muse, a realm of questions unfurls in our minds. It is natural for the inquisitive soul to seek answers, to delve into the mysteries that surround this voyage. In the spirit of camaraderie, we invite you to join us in exploring some of the most frequently asked questions about this grand adventure.

What is the best time of year to sail around Kos?

In the Aegean, the sea and the sky engage in a perennial dance, creating a range of atmospheres that vary with the seasons. The summer months, particularly July and August, bask in the fullness of the sun, making them popular among visitors. However, if a quieter, more reflective journey appeals to you, consider the gentle warmth of May, June, or September.

Do I need any special qualifications to rent a yacht?

The requirements for yachting around Kos depend on the vessel you choose and the services offered by the rental company. Some companies may require proof of your sailing abilities, like an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or an RYA Day Skipper. However, others offer skippered yachts, where a qualified crew takes care of the navigation while you immerse yourself in the beauty of the voyage.

Can I dock my yacht anywhere in Kos?

While the allure of secluded coves and untouched beaches may be tempting, we must remember to respect the rules that govern these waters. Designated anchoring spots ensure the safety of your vessel and help protect the fragile marine ecosystem. Inquire with local authorities or consult nautical charts to identify these areas.

What should I pack for my yachting trip?

Pack lightly but thoughtfully. Essentials include comfortable clothing, swimwear, sturdy footwear for onshore exploration, sun protection like hats, sunglasses and sunscreen, and any personal medication you may need. A pair of binoculars for wildlife viewing and a good book for tranquil afternoons on deck can also enhance your experience.

Is Kos a suitable yachting destination for families?

Absolutely! Kos offers a variety of experiences that can captivate both the young and the young-at-heart. Safe beaches for swimming, fascinating historical sites, and the simple joy of sailing on the Aegean can provide a wonderful, educational, and unforgettable family holiday.

We believe that each question enriches our understanding and appreciation of our yachting journey, revealing another layer of the deep relationship we share with the sea and the land that borders it. So, let us continue to ask, explore, and discover, for that is the true spirit of the voyage.

Prior to Turkey, only seven nautical miles and other route suggestions, such as excursions to many Greek islands, can be reached relatively quickly. In the north, the choice is great: Kalimos, Leros, Patmos or Samos attract travelers with their breathtaking landscapes. In the south of Tilos, Chalki, Symi and Rhodes offer popular walking excursions for day trips through the idyllic old cities. Sponge fishing islands are great places for quick excursions. In the middle of the seacoast, there are many colourful deck chairs and beach umbrellas. Sports opportunities are also available. Trees provide shading in the neighbouring areas. Paradise Beach Kos:

Paradise is among the most popular beaches in Kos. It’s 30 km from Kos, and 7 km from Kefalos. No wonder why the beach got its name: this section of the coast has an excellent combination of white sand and crystal water. The beach is well-equipped with umbrellas, a sun deck, and a watersport centre. It attracts many visitors from day to day. Several inns with fresh fish and Greek cuisine are waiting for gourmets as well.

Which period is best to sail in Kos?

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we almost never see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates the summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, from 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August.

The sea-wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest. It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula northern current dominates.

Yacht Charter Kos

Kos, the capital and main port of Kos Island, is on the north-east coast very close to the Turkish coast. It is a beautiful city, lush and green with palm lined beaches, a mountainous backdrop and interesting archeological sites from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. There are some particularly good mosaics to be found as well as some early Christian churches with impressive frescoes.

This busy tourist centre also offers a lively nightlife and good culinary scene and is one of the main charter bases in the Aegean; an excellent base for a sailing holiday around the Dodecanses island complex. Kos island, birthplace of Hippocrates and site of one of the first hospitals at Asklepion, is the third largest island in the Dodecanese and there are excellent sailing opportunities around the island and further afield. Leros, Kalymnos and Patmos are to the north and Tilos, Rhodes , Symi and Karpathos are to the south, plus thousands of smaller islands, islets and rocky outcrops.

Walking distance from the historic Kos Old Town is the full-service Kos Marina. From here you can sail to the lesser known islands of the Dodecanese that are hard to reach without a yacht.

Kos has an international airport; about 23 km away that services many Greek and European cities. Ferries run between Kos and the port of Piraeus all year round. Both high speed and conventional ferries that carry vehicles run this route. There are also passenger ferries from neighbouring islands and also from Turkey.

Sailing conditions

Kos is an excellent sailing destination for bareboat yacht charter . Sailors wanting guaranteed wind and longer passages will enjoy the sailing between the unspoilt and varied Dodecanese islands. The prevailing 'Meltemi' wind blows all summer from the NW. Force 4 to 6, offering exhilarating sailing. It can reach Force 7 and sometimes blows for days.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Kos?

It all depends on the type of boat vacation you would like to experience in Kos and what kind of experiences you would like to have. Rent a sailboat in Kos for a real adventure or a boat with two hulls for a more relaxed vacation in the Greek islands .

Motorboat charter in Kos

Pros of renting a motorboat in Kos

A motorboat charter in Kos is ideal for those travelling in comfort and style. You have plenty of room on board and on deck, and don’t have to worry about taking up too much space when travelling with others.

Another great thing about a motorboat rental in Kos is the fact that motorboats are a lot faster than other types of boats, making them the perfect water vehicles to explore stunning coastlines and race across the turquoise waters to see everything you want to see.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Kos

If you want to rent a motorboat in Kos to explore the islands and its surroundings, you should also be aware of some cons coming with that. Motorboats are not the cheapest boats to charter in Greece and you will have to pay extra for the fuel you’re using on your trip, making them not particularly budget-friendly.

Catamaran rental in Kos

Pros of renting a catamaran in Kos

A catamaran charter in Kos is a great choice for anyone wanting to explore the Greek Islands in style. You have plenty of space on deck, the bedrooms feel like lovely hotel rooms on water, and due to the two hulls a catamaran stands on, there is plenty of room to host a nice-sized group of people. The two hulls support the catamaran so much that it feels less shaky on board - even when the wind and waves pick up a little.

Another great thing about a catamaran rental in Kos is the fact that catamarans come equipped with both a sail and an engine. This makes them very versatile and you can easily react to the changing weather conditions. When the winds are not blowing strong enough, you can always revert to using the engine.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Kos

Something important to keep in mind when chartering a catamaran in Kos is the fact that they are relatively big and with the two hulls, not the easiest to navigate - especially in narrow spaces. You might want to practice your skills before hopping on a catamaran in Greece .

Catamaran charter in Kos

Rent a sailboat in Kos

Pros of renting a sailboat in Kos

A sailboat charter in Kos is a great choice for anyone who wants to explore the islands while enjoying a journey filled with freedom and adventure. You solely sail with the power of the wind and have to fully immerse yourself in Mother Nature.

This makes a sailboat rental in Kos a lot more environmentally friendly than other types of boat holidays. As you harness the power of the wind, you don’t produce any additional CO2-emissions. As you don’t have to worry about leaving the marinas with a full tank, you’re saving on fuel and therefore also a lot of money. Perfect for those travelling on a budget!

Cons of renting a sailboat in Kos

One of the downsides of a sailboat hire in Kos is the fact that you need some skills to sail a sailboat in the Greek Islands. It is not the easiest terrain to get around and sailing a sailboat means that simply pressing a button is not enough to get around.

Sailboat rental in Kos

What kind of boat licence do you need when renting a boat in Kos?

Anyone who wants to charter a yacht in Kos needs to be in possession of a valid boat licence. There are plenty of licences accepted, including the ICC, ASA and RYA. However, you don’t need to carry a VHF radio licence.
