Beneteau has achieved something great with its 
new 30-footer. For a small production yacht sitting squarely at the entry-level 
end of the market, it has crammed the Oceanis 30.1 full of 
smart ideas.

The features and fittings on board are of a level normally only seen in higher-spec boats, and they’ve created a vessel that sails beautifully to boot.

Her owners will be spoilt into expecting every yacht they own after this one to have cockpit locker lights, accumulator tanks in the fresh water system and bronze skin fittings, but you might expect to pay a hefty premium for these features and excellent build quality.

So to find stacks of lovely details on the smallest Oceanis that Beneteau produce is very pleasing to see indeed.

The 30.1 has a strong family resemblance to the larger 46.1 and the 51.1, with their Pascal Conq lines and full-length hull chines generating maximum living space below decks while preserving a narrower waterline.

Her square-top mainsail and twin wheels look sharply modern, but her narrower beam – to make her easier to transport by road – should please traditionalists and result in a boat that tracks straight even without a hand on the helm.

These are bold claims, so does she live up to first impressions?

THE TEST VERDICT

The rulebook for entry-level boats says they should be built to a price, and well, a little bit basic.

With the 30.1 Beneteau have ignored the rulebook.

Again and again she surprised me with the attention to the details that have gone into her.

She is just what a starter boat should be, and she has lots of features that make life onboard easy and more pleasing – like the neat cubby holes, USB chargers where you need them and locker lights.

By the end of the test, I’ll admit, I was little bit smitten 
by her, she’s a cute, fun boat that was great fun to sail but she also has a little cheeky streak, a glint in her eye, that says there’s more to her than her appearance suggests.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

It’s a fact that most people don’t go out sailing in 
strong winds, especially if they are new to yachting or have younger members of crew, so the 30.1 has been tailored to the conditions most owners will go out in.

Because of that she sails really well in light winds. Of course she should be able to cope with a blow, but without taking her out in rough weather, I can only comment on the weather we had.

Her layout works well and, thanks to the broad bows if not her sub-three metre beam, she offers good use of the space down below without any area feeling compromised.

The optional fold up chart table is a case in point; it’s there when you want it, but not if or when you don’t.

It’s clear that from the outset a lot of thought has gone into the 30.1.

From disguising her narrow beam, to the way she sails, she is a great little boat. There is one problem with her though.

The thing is, that if you’re new to yachts and you buy the 30.1 you may not fully comprehend how much all the small details improve life on board – even 
if they are hidden from sight.

Only when you move to a bigger boat will it dawn on you how much Beneteau were spoiling you.

When that time comes, you’ll also realise that in order to get the things you took for granted, you are going to have to dig a lot deeper into your pockets.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1: Best Performance Cruiser

With five dedicated, dual-purpose racer/cruisers measuring in at under 37 feet, the Performance Cruiser class was not only the largest and most competitive division in the 2020 Boat of the Year contest, but it was also the most fun. Putting this roster of compact, peppy sailboats through their paces was nothing short of a blast.

Judge Ralph Naranjo was perhaps the most performance-­oriented sailor in this year’s judging panel, and he had strong opinions on all of the nominees. Regarding the Italia 9.98—one of two boats in the class built in Italy—he said: “The Italia appealed to me. I’m really looking at these smaller boats that offer both performance as well as some cruising amenities to get people into the activity. From that vantage point, what I saw here was a boat that performed well. She’s not overburdened with go-fast technology, but she has a good sail area-to-displacement ratio (26.0), and the hull is designed to be more performance-­oriented. While I did find a certain elegance to her, I’d also say she has to go on what I’d call a ‘rigging-simplicity diet.’ There are so many twings and tweaking lines that the cruising fraternity won’t put to much use. But she also sailed very well. I liked this vessel.”

Judge Ed Sherman had strong thoughts on the construction of the other Italian entry, the Grand Soleil 34. “This is a boat I really wanted to love and had a lot of good feelings about,” he said. “It’s got a carbon grid that’s glued into the boat with Plexus, which is kind of intriguing because the floorboards were inlaid in small sections in between the grid work. So the grid is exposed, and it all makes for a very interesting cabin sole. I enjoyed sailing the boat. I think it would make a pretty effective club racer with the ability to take a small family for the occasional mini cruise. I liked it.”

All the panelists got a big kick out of sailing the Jeanneau Sun Fast 3300, but all of them also came to the same conclusion: This pocket rocket has no real desire to be a cruising boat, even a part-time one. “Let’s put it this way,” Sherman said, “it’s a racing boat you can sleep on, not a cruiser. All that said, it sailed really well. I enjoyed that aspect of it very much, even though it would take me a week to figure out what all the freaking lines do. But I’d enjoy it.” As is turned out, the judges had the Sun Fast 3300 ­well-assessed; it was later named the overall Boat of the Year by our sister publication, boat-racing mag Sailing World .

So the deliberations came down to two boats: the J/99 and the Beneteau Oceanis 30.1. Naranjo made his feelings known unequivocally: “I’m a quirky guy, an old dude, but I love to sail. And I love the J/99. Sure, it’s more of a camper cruiser. But if you can put up with minimal ­accommodations—a ­comfortable bunk, a galley that works, a private toilet—she’s a great coastal cruiser/club racer. She’s truly the kind of boat I love sailing.”

When it came down to final deliberations, however, Naranjo was overruled by his fellow judges, whose votes enabled the Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 to be named the year’s Best Performance Cruiser . Ed Sherman offered up these observations:

“It’s a cool boat, a nice little starter boat for a family getting into the sport. At $160,000, it was also the least expensive boat in this group, so it represents good value. We sailed it in a pretty good breeze, and it absolutely sailed wonderfully. It has dual wheels, which might seem like overkill on a boat this size, but they actually worked well; they weren’t big, monstrous things—they were appropriately sized. I actually had a feeling of security driving it in the heavy air.

“It’s also a boat that can be configured in a multitude of ways,” he continued. “You’ve got four different keel options, as well as a centerboard option. You can get a tabernacle mast that you can raise or lower easily, so the idea there is you can use it to take a mini vacation, and it becomes a home away from home. You can just trailer it to a new waterway versus spending a whole bunch of time sailing it there. I’ve always liked boats that give you that kind of ­capability. I mean, you’re not going to sail to England on her. But the reality is, this is a very nice little coastal cruiser or one that would be right at home on a big lake. It’s perfect for that.”

“This 30-footer was a handful of pleasure,” Naranjo confirmed. “The twin wheels were linked to twin rudders, and underway she was just a stellar example of a well-­balanced boat. The dodger was sized correctly, and big enough to break the wind flow that was coming back at the person at the helm, which is a handy and very useful capability. The side decks were on the narrow side but still quite safe. What I was most taken by was that we put some punishing loads on her, and we didn’t hear squeaks or groans on deck. She’s small but solid.”

Amazingly enough, the class’s smallest boat came up very big.

Big new small yacht: Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 tested

The new Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 is a spacious and well mannered addition to the range. Rupert Holmes reports

Thirty years ago a small boat might have been anything less than around 24ft. However, that number has since leapt upwards, with many large manufacturers paying scant attention in the last ten years to building anything under 35ft.

Part of the argument for this is that smaller boats are less economic to build at a price the market will bear. Almost as much labour goes into building a 28-footer as a 35-footer and both have the same number of engines, instruments, masts and deck fittings that must be installed.

So it’s welcome news that Beneteau has clearly put a lot of thought, effort and knowledge into its latest model. As a result the Oceanis 30.1 sets new standards for a boat that’s just short of 30ft.

Although the overall dimensions are modest, high freeboard is combined with maximum beam carried well aft to create impressive internal volume. At the same time advances in yacht design, allied with a powerful deep draught bulb keel , make this a fast and well mannered 30-footer by any standards.

The new boat is a twin rudder design with somewhat smaller overall dimensions than the Oceanis 31, which was launched way back in 2006. The relatively narrow beam of less than 3m means the boat can be delivered by road without needing an escort. That saves a useful chunk of money that can be passed on to buyers.

Built at the former Delphia factory in Poland (Beneteau bought the company in 2018) the options list has been streamlined to pare back the price – keeping the production process simple also helps keep the base price down, without compromising quality.

Nevertheless there are three different keel options. Standard is a cast iron 1.88m (6ft 2in) bulb, while a shoal draught option reduces draught to just 1.3m (4ft 3in), but adds 177kg (390lb) of ballast to help maintain stability. There’s also a lifting keel with draught of 0.95 to 2.33m (3ft 1in to 7ft 8in) and a further 150kg (330lb) of ballast.

The broad transom gives space for a very large cockpit – we had five people on board without feeling as though there was any lack of space.

Our test boat had the optional twin wheels, rather than the large central wheel of the older Oceanis 31 that was hard to move around and divided up the space.

However, my preference would be for the standard single tiller, which is connected to the rudders by a below-deck tie bar. This gives an extra seven inches length to the cockpit seats, as well as avoiding unnecessary extra weight, complexity and expense.

Although it’s an open transom design, the cockpit floor is a reasonable distance above the waterline and there’s a fold-down bathing platform that would also facilitate boarding from a dinghy.

The central folding cockpit table is supported by a substantial stainless steel hoop, so you don’t feel vulnerable in the wide cockpit when the boat is well heeled and there’s always somewhere solid to brace your feet. Access to the top of each rudder stock is on the cockpit floor, which makes them easy to reach in an emergency.

An optional bowsprit makes sense for setting spinnakers and reaching sails and for its integrated anchor stowage. There’s also a deep chain locker with space for an electric windlass.

There’s a gas locker at the aft end of the cockpit for a single camping gaz bottle and next to it a hot and cold water deck shower. The deep and cavernous locker on the starboard side of the cockpit has a narrow, but long, opening with the lid supported by gas struts. However, there’s no dedicated liferaft stowage.

To accommodate the square top main sail the fractional rig has no backstay. Instead, the spreaders are very well swept aft. There’s much to recommend the simplicity of this arrangement, but the lack of a backstay means that, unlike most fractional rigs, the mainsail cannot be depowered as easily, and on our test boat there was a lot of forestay sag when sailing upwind.

The shape of the Finot Conq-designed hull follows that of recent successful short-handed offshore raceboats, including a long waterline, full length chine and relatively broad forward sections. However the latter are more conservative than Beneteau’s larger Oceanis 46.1 and 51.1 models, or racing oriented designs such as Jeanneau’s Sun Fast 3300.

Our test boat was equipped with the standard Dacron mainsail with a square top and two reefs, plus the optional bowsprit and asymmetric spinnaker kit. A 105% slightly overlapping headsail is also offered in place of the standard self tacking jib and adds a useful 6.4sq m (69sq ft) of extra area.

This sail plan is sufficiently large to give good light weather performance – on the second day of the test the boat still made respectable progress reaching under spinnaker in winds below five knots.

A choice of self-tacking jib, or a slightly larger conventional headsail, is offered.

Primary winches are mounted at the back of the cockpit coaming, just forward of the helm stations. They can therefore be reached while steering, while a single crew member can handle the sheets in a tack without the table getting in the way.

Initially, we set off close hauled with full sail in 12 to 13 knots of true wind. The boat felt solid and comfortable, while making a decent speed of 5.6 to 5.8 knots. Compared to older boats of this size it’s amazingly stable, thanks to a combination of the high level of form stability and the deep bulb keel. On the basis of experience during the test, the boat is likely to stand up to full sail when close-hauled up to true wind speed of around 15 knots (around 19 knots apparent).

In common with other twin-rudder boats, the helm felt positive and light at all times, even when we pressed hard under the asymmetric spinnaker later in the test.

The sail plan is efficient across a wide range of winds, yet is easy to handle.

Despite the narrow side decks, moving around is straightforward and when well-heeled it’s easy to step onto the coachroof to get past the windward shrouds. In less idyllic conditions, when you want to keep weight low, the coachroof has good stainless steel handrails at a convenient height.

The mainsail is sheeted to a bridle over the companionway and taken to a relatively small Harken 20 coachroof winch. This means it can’t be handled from the helm, which is clearly a disadvantage. In addition, the blocks for the tackle were a little far aft, so they would not automatically clear the head of anyone standing in the companionway.

Rope bags were provided on our test boat although, as is often the case, they would benefit from being larger. The towed genoa cars enable the headsail to continue to be trimmed to an efficient shape even when well reefed in stronger winds.

Turning back towards base, we hoisted the asymmetric kite. With the true wind increasing slightly to 14-15 knots, the boat remained well balanced and finger light on the helm, even when we luffed to bring the apparent wind on the beam, with the boat fully powered up.

Boat speed at this stage was consistently 7 to 7.5 knots, yet we were sailing in full cruising mode with no one tending the sheets. This puts the Oceanis 30.1 in a different class to older designs in which rudder loads can rise alarmingly if sheets aren’t eased in gusts.

Under power

The engine installation is very neat, with main access from the front, behind companionway steps that lift on gas struts. There are also access panels at the back and on both sides.

The standard 15hp diesel inboard is recommended only for inland waters and our test boat was fitted with a 21hp model allied to a fixed two blade propeller that proved more than adequate in size. At 3,000rpm boat speed is seven knots in flat water, while 6.4 knots is achieved at a more comfortable 2,400rpm.

There’s no escaping that twin rudder boats handle differently under power. However, most are entirely predictable in this respect and have reassuring control in reverse. Therefore, what you lose in not having prop wash over the rudder to make tight turns is gained in other ways. The 30.1 performed exactly as expected, including quickly gaining steerage in reverse, even when head to wind.

Below decks

Easy companionway steps lead to a bright and spacious saloon that belies the boat’s dimensions. Natural light and ventilation pour through hull windows, overhead hatches, coachroof windows and opening ports, while headroom of well over 1.8m (6ft) adds to the feeling of space.

A large folding central table in the saloon has stowage both in the top and underneath. Most of the saloon’s stowage is under the settees, but unlike most boats where this is difficult to reach, the 30.1 has split cushions and large hinged plywood locker tops which gives easy access.

Impressively there’s space for a small navigation table that can be deployed in a number of different modes, including folded up against the bulkhead or hinged down above the aft end of the port settee. Alternatively, the aft section of the settee can be removed, allowing someone to sit at the chart table in a conventional way.

The heads compartment is a very impressive size for a small boat and is built so you can brace yourself in a seaway. On the other hand the galley is relatively compact, with the lid of the generous 75lt insulated coolbox doubling as the only worktop space and there’s only a single sink.

Nevertheless, an opening port above the cooker, gains full marks for providing ventilation in warm weather and for letting out condensation on a rainy day.

Without question the forecabin is the best of the two, with a large bunk that has plenty of space, even at its foot. The double doors to this cabin accentuate the general feeling of space on board, creating a semi open-plan layout. However, with the doors closed there’s ample shoulder room to stand and change clothes.

Good stowage is also provided in this area, including a shelved cupboard on the starboard side and a hanging locker to port.

The aft cabin is smaller and the inner half of the berth does not give space to sit up in bed, although the berth dimensions are again generous. There is space in both cabins to put the small items like phones, keys and wallets that so often create disorganised clutter.

PBO verdict

Most developments in new yachts are small evolutions, but the 30.1 represents a step change for a vessel of its size. This reflects a huge amount of development in yacht design over the past decade or so, which has coincided with a period in which the big boatbuilders have largely ignored boats of this size.

The interior does not feel like that of a boat with a beam of less than 3m, nor one that has a hull length of only 29ft 6in – it’s more akin to the accommodation of many 32-34ft models from 25 years ago. Equally, the speed potential and therefore passage times of this boat, with its long waterline length, will not be dissimilar to many larger older boats.

However, the biggest difference between this boat and older designs of a similar size is in handling under sail. The combination of a high stability hull form, efficient sail plan, deep low centre of gravity keel and twin rudders provide a totally different experience, especially in gusty conditions.

This boat is often referred to as a starter boat, but that’s a description that perplexes me. Granted, it would be a great first boat, but equally there are many old hands who don’t need or want a boat of more than 30ft, but would value a new model that incorporates the latest advances in yacht design.

FOR EVERYONE With unbeatable living space for its size and a focus on simplicity of use, the smallest model of the cruising range is nevertheless stylish, and fast, with a highly competitive ready-to-sail price.

EXTERIOR DESIGN With a stemhead and her hard-chine hull and well-proportioned sides and coachroof, the Oceanis 30.1 looks unashamedly like a small yacht. The Finot-Conq plan has met the double challenge of power and simple navigation. With her slender bow, optimized weight, stiff canvas and square-top mainsail, she performs well in all points of sailing. For beginners or for short-handed sailing, the self-tailing jib and the single winch make her easy to handle. For performance, the Oceanis 30.1 has a large overlapping genoa, a furling code zero and an asymmetric spinnaker. Aft, a step affords access to the sea and can be supplemented by a small lifting platform.

INTERIOR DESIGN With a few extra centimetres won in strategic places the Oceanis 30.1 differs from other boats, thanks to a headspace of 1.98 m in all the places inside where it is comfortable to stand. The two good-sized double cabins each have berths running lengthwise and an open entryway making them feel particularly spacious. The two benches in the saloon provide an additional place for two extra berths. The large shower room is divided into a marine toilet on one side and shower and washbasin on the other. At the foot of the gently sloping companionway, the L-shaped galley has top and bottom storage, a 75-litre refrigerator and a real oven under the gas stove.

Both Beneteau and Contest yachts are bringing out new designs with full electric drives as electric yachts continue to grow in size

It’s more than five years since electric drives became the default propulsion option for new daysailer designs but they’re now also entering the mainstream for larger yachts.

Beneteau’s first electric model, the Oceanis 30.1E, has a complete system from Torqeedo, including a 6kW pod drive with regeneration that enables recharging while sailing. The standard battery, a 5kW 48V unit, is installed at the bottom of the cockpit locker where the diesel tank is usually located, and there’s an option for a second battery to double the range.

The installation is impressively quiet, yet there’s loads of instant torque, which makes for easier manoeuvring in tight spaces than with a diesel engine.

Maximum speed in flat water is six knots, but with limited range as it decreases exponentially with speed. At four knots you get three hours of autonomy with the standard battery pack, which equates to 12 miles in flat water.

One of the interesting facets of electric propulsion is the ability to motorsail in very light winds, when very little power may be needed to add a couple of knots of boat speed. Just a little extra forward propulsion helps build apparent wind, so if the wind direction is suitable, a small amount of electric power will silently boost boat speed from three to five knots. Even the standard battery can support this for as much as 10 hours.

When sailing on a reach, regeneration kicks in as early as 6-8 knots of wind speed. At low speeds only 100W of power is produced, but that figure rises rapidly with increasing boat speed. Beneteau also intends to offer a massive 1,000W package of solar panels that are tailored to the deck shape – enough to completely recharge the 48V bank between weekend trips without plugging into shorepower.

Final pricing has not yet been determined, but it’s expected to be roughly 5-6% more than the standard price for a diesel engine boat, which represents an extra £5,000-£6,000 for the Oceanis 30.1E.

Meanwhile, Dutch yard Contest Yachts has announced its new 49CS and 50CS models are now available with electric propulsion and back-up diesel generators. “We’ve run the numbers across all conditions: wind, sea state, etc and our already class-leading range capabilities are now potentially bettered by going electric. It’s a win-win!” says Contest’s senior technical engineer Robert Vijselaar.

Contest worked with Lloyds Register, Torqeedo and BMW to create a safe, integrated system with a 50kW Torqeedo Deep Blue motor plus 40kWh BMW i3 battery packs. Regeneration will be available from the propeller, twin in-hull Watt&Sea hydrogenerators and extensive integrated Solbian solar panels.

This is backed up by a 20kW diesel generator that’s large enough to drive the boat at cruising speed without drawing power from the batteries. The efficiency of a generator running at constant speed is such that the 400lt fuel tank means range under motor alone is greater than that of the equivalent boat with a conventional propulsion system.

The first installation will be on a boat that’s scheduled for completion in 2024.

It boasts two large, elegant double cabins, the beds are arranged along the long side of the boat, creating space and a feeling of freedom. There are two additional beds in the saloon. The large bathroom is divided into two parts. One is the toilet, the other is the shower. At the end of the staircase is the L-shaped kitchen, which features hanging and standing cupboards, a fridge and an oven under the stove top. The sail plan and hard chine hull offers both performance and easy maneuverability. Slim stem, optimized weight, stiffness of sails and rigging ensure safe sailing pleasure. The self-tacking jib and single winch make the boat suitable for single handed sailing. For greater performance, the Oceanis 30.1 features a large genoa and in mast roller furling mainsail.   At the stern there is an swim platform for access to the water and a fresh water shower for you to rinse off after a nice swim.  This boat is ready for wind, sun, fun, family and friends.
